Q & A Episode #4 ft. Drew Magid (Imagine Dragons, Grouplove, Florida Georgia Line)
00:54:56
Everyone welcome our first Q & A with a guest host! Drew Magid - another long-time friend. We toured back in 20...11/13 together. Since touring together Drew has stepped it up a notch. He started interning, then did Merch, Production Coordinated, and eventually made his way up to a Tour Manager. Nowadays he is off the road and a manager at Big Loud. This episode was supposed to be Drew and me answering everyone's questions… and we eventually did. However the first half or so we just go over Drew’s journey in the music industry. I think his journey has some great lessons and examples of how working hard pays off. What the heck is it like Tour Managing an artist as big as Imagine Dragons? (I’ll give you a clue it doesn't involve a lot of sleep)
Anyway, I don’t know what to call this episode. But it was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it too. Maybe we start just doing episodes on people’s origin stories - who knows! As always let us know what you think in the reviews! See you next week!
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:
• How to work your way up to managing a band
• The power of a positive mindset

This week we have my favorite combo - an artist and one of their crew members. However, it’s not just any artist - it’s Yungblud! And it’s not just any crew member - it’s photographer Tom Pallant. They are friends and partners that work *with* each other - not for each other. Being a photographer myself, I have always dreamed of having this kind of relationship while working for artists. I have had it a few times in my career - but honestly, they take it to a whole other level, and it was nothing short of impressive hearing how well they vibe, learn, and grow together. Thank you so much for Yunglbud and Tom for taking time out of their busy lives to share irreplaceable information with us.
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:

How Festivals Are Created ft. Amanda Phelan (Danny Wimmer Presents)
00:57:18
This week we have the wonderful Amanda Phelan on the bus! Amanda comes to us from Danny Wimmer Presents - where she is the Director of Talent. Lately I have been noticing a lot of misinformation out there on what actually goes into making a festival happen. Now I do not know what it takes to put on a festival - because I have never done it. Danny Wimmer Presents puts on eight different festivals all over the USA every year. Aftershock, Louder Than Life & Hometown Rising to name a few. I have had the pleasure of attending some of them when I was on tour with A Day To Remember - and damnit, they were a blast. What Does a Stylist Do? ft. Brooke Llewellyn (Demi Lovato, Sia)
00:59:18
This week we have Brooke on the podcast! I got to hang out with Brooke a few weeks ago at a wedding and the whole time I was just thinking - I need to know more about what she does for a living. We met once before, but never really got the time to sit down and know her - now I have! Brooke is a stylist that has worked with Demi Lovato, SIA, and St. Vincent to name a few. I never realized what a big role a stylist plays in someone's look. After the fact, it kind of seemed like a no-brainer, and I am not sure how I overlooked it before. As always I hope you genuinely enjoy this episode as much as I did. Any week I get to learn about someone else’s job on the road is a good week for me.

Working with Artists ft. Paris Visone (Limp Bizkit, New Found Glory)
00:54:51
This week we welcome Paris Visone, an amazing Music Photographer and solid friend. Paris has created her career out of working with artists - not for them. Which I think is an important distinction to make. When you tour with someone, your work as a photographer is a reflection of your relationship with that artist. Arguably even more important - that artist’s relationship with you. Paris has been touring for over 10 years and during those years has created some very unique work with artists such as Limp Bizkit, New Found Glory, & Godsmack. It was great to catch up with her, a pleasure to learn from her - and I hope, as always - you enjoy this conversation as much as I do.
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:

What Does a Merchandise Director Do? ft. Melissa Hemingway ( Flysouth Music Group )
00:54:54
This week we are joined by Melissa Hemingway of Fly South Music Group. Melissa is the Merch Director at Fly South. She started out in Illinois going to college and then moved to Florida to work for Fueled By Ramen right around the time of its conception. I like Melissa’s journey because it does not involve touring - which has been the minority case for us on the podcast. I think I am most impressed by how different areas of the industry collaborate and work with the artists themselves. To me, that is one of the most fun parts, but at the same time can be the most challenging. No two artists are the same, and each one takes a specific set of skills to work with successfully. Thank you Melissa for sharing your journey and knowledge with us this week. Enjoy!
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:

Interview with Sully Sullivan - Working Security in the Music Industry (The Vans Warped Tour, Billie Eilish)
01:08:27
Security guards can work for the venue, the artist, a tour, or even a festival. Regardless of what job you have in the music industry - you will, at some point, have to interact with security. They are there to keep everyone safe, and we would argue they are the true heroes of the music industry. Without them at the venue, everything and nothing would happen simultaneously, and chaos would ensue. Please welcome Sully to the Don't Shit on the bus Podcast. Sully has been doing security in the music industry since before we were born. In the late 90's he worked in hip-hop; then he was with The Vans Warped Tour from start to finish - and lately, you might have seen him on the road with Billie Eilish. That is just naming a few. The point is, he has been doing this for a long time and has a lot of good information and stories. As always, we hope you enjoy this as much as we did and hope it leads to a better understanding of what is going on in a security guard’s day when you cross paths with them at a venue.

What Does a Dancer Do On Tour? ft. Sara Biv (Major Lazer, Miley Cyrus, Cardi B)
01:04:32
This week we have the talented Sara Biv on the podcast. Sara is a touring dancer who has worked with artists such as Miley Cyrus, Cardi B, and Major Lazer. In addition to touring as a dancer, Sarah is also a choreographer when she is off the road in LA. I initially met Sara when I was touring with Major Lazer. We knew each other from touring but had never really sat down and had a conversation. I knew I was going to learn a lot from her (because let’s be honest I know nothing about being a dancer on tour other than the fact it is physically demanding) but damn, she taught me so much. Not just what she does - but how she does it, and her mindset. It was a very inspirational interview and I hope anyone who has any intention of making it in the touring world gives this one a listen. Thank you Sara!
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:

What Does a Tour Bus Driver Do? ft. Moose
01:10:20
This week we have arguably one of the most important touring jobs on the show - the Bus Driver. Everyone meet Moose - your new favorite bus driver. Moose has spent the last 20 years of his life touring, a good portion of it - driving. However, what I really liked about Moose is that he slowly worked his way up to becoming a bus driver. A lot of drivers are lifers - they have been doing it their whole life and it is all they know. There is nothing wrong with that - in fact, I think it’s quite awesome. However our guest’s story this week was quite relatable to any touring job, and I liked that. Hope you enjoy this week’s episode - I learned a lot and look forward to being a better bus rider in the future. Thanks, Moose.
In this episode of the Don’t Shit On The Bus podcast we will learn:
• The different tiers of vehicles bands use to tour

How A Venue Operates ft. Joey Phillips (The Forum)
01:01:34
This week we are taking a trip down memory lane. Kind of - we are learning like the first 10 episodes. We were lucky enough to connect with Joey Phillips. Joey is the Event Manager at The Forum in Los Angeles. The Forum is a legendary 17,000 capacity, all music venue, that has been open since 1967. Joey takes us through what the heck a venue does. Because if you are like me - you usually just show up at a venue, give them your ticket - and watch the show. However for every touring job, there is a venue counterpart. The venue has to work with the touring team to advance and figure out every aspect of the show. Then on the day of - they have to put it into action. This is the first of two episodes. Next week we will go a bit more in-depth on what each job does. I hope this week can be a level up in your knowledge on what goes on inside of a venue. Maybe working at a local venue first is your path to get into the music industry. Or maybe you have been touring for a while and want to find a way to get off the road.
