05 Jul 2024Using Ethology and the L.E.G.S. Model When Working with Dogs. Part 100:58:40

In this episode, Britteny is back to talk about canine ethology and how DogSpeak uses the LEGS model when working with behavior.

Kim Brophey, a prominent figure in the study of animal behavior, has innovatively integrated an ethological approach into applied behavior analysis. Her trademarked analysis tool, “LEGS,” which encapsulates learning, environment, genetics, and self, complements the more widely recognized “ABC” model—antecedent, behavior, consequence.

03 Sep 2024Preparing Your Dog for Children with Special Guest, Bethany Cunningham, CPDT-KA with Family Paws01:08:31

In this episode, Nikki and Gray talk with Family Paws expert, Bethany Cunningham, CPDT-KA on preparing Gray to the TWINS he and his wife are expecting in November.

Family Paws provides specialized programs and support for new and expecting parents with dogs. Family Paws Parent Education | Dog Training for Baby Interactions

Since 2002, their goal has been to increase safety and reduce stress in homes with young children and family dogs. They help to answer the question “How can we prepare our dog for life with baby/children?”

Jennifer Shryock, owner and founder of Family Paws, saw a need for resources and information to support new and expecting families with dogs. While answering calls for a German Shepherd rescue Jennifer heard firsthand the concerns, challenges, and heartache families experienced. From fearing how their dog would accept a new addition to a serious bite to a toddler, families needed more support and resources. Recognizing this need led Jennifer down the path to developing this very important niche, dog and baby/toddler dynamics and safety through Family Paws. We strongly believe that education empowers, and our goal is to increase safety and decrease stress for all family members through education and realistic expectations.

Bethany is Family Paws Program Development & Educator Program Co-Instructor. She is a mom, professional dog trainer, and professional photographer. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer with a focus on behavior modification in pet dogs.

Bethany has a deep love of animal behavior, child development, and visual arts, and is delighted by the fact that her multiple roles with Family Paws Parent Education bring all of those passions together. Bethany finds great joy in helping families succeed through relationship-building, empathetic practices for both dogs and children alike, and brings that enthusiasm to Family Paws both in her role with program development and as a co-instructor for the Family Paws Educator course. 18 Feb 2025Labeling a Dog "Good" is Subjective00:45:52

Don't let anyone tell you that your dog is bad just because they have a different idea on what makes a dog good.

Every lifestyle is different; therefore, it would seem that expectations of the dogs we have in our homes should be different. There is no standard on what makes a good dog. AKC has put together their Canine Good Citizen test but in our professional opinion, that does not make a good dog, but a dog that can pass tests in a controlled environment. We also don't believe that if your dog isn't able to pass the test, that doesn't make them "bad."

Nikki and Britteny talk about the different behaviors they need from their own dogs and how they see "good" and "bad."

04 Oct 2022Talking Adolescence with Dr. Kathy Murphy01:03:39

In this episode, Dr. Kathy Murphy joins the podcast to talk about dogs' brains and how they process information during adolescence. Adolescence can be a difficult stage for both dogs and their humans but having better knowledge on what an adolescent dog is going through can make this stage little more bearable.

Dr Kathy Murphy (BVetMed, DPhil, CVA, CLAS, MRCVS) is a veterinary surgeon and neuroscientist. She graduated from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons UK in 1999, initially working in mixed clinical practice before studying for two post graduate clinical qualifications with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Laboratory Animal Science.

Dr Murphy founded, and is now Director of, Barking Brains Ltd (a neuroscience outreach platform for the animal behavior and training community), which focuses on translating neuroscientific information into practical and useful information for people interested in animal behavior. In order to maximize the impact of her diverse interests and skill set, Dr Murphy teamed up with Behavior Vets LLC in 2022 when she took up the position of Chief Scientific Officer.

She is now able to focus on her newfound passion for science communication and providing evidence based, up to date, accessible, scientific information to clinicians, animal professionals and their clients, about subjects related to pain, behavior, neurobiology and the many interrelated factors.

19 Dec 2022Discussing Behavioral Euthanasia01:02:17

TW: Discussions on animal abuse, hoarding, dog aggression and euthanasia.

In this episode, Nikki is joined by DogSpeak trainer, Alicia and Animal Rescue Corps, Director of Animal Welfare, Kim Rezac.

Behavioral Euthanasia is a topic no one wants to talk about. The adage of "it's all in how you raise them" is unfortunately untrue. Dogs are individuals and they often have traumas that they are unable to overcome and for the safety of humans and other animals, behavioral euthanasia is the most humane choice.

Regardless of which side of the discussion you are on, this episode will give you the view from a behavior specialist dealing mostly with pets, an animal welfare director who works with dogs from hoarding/abusive situations, and a former dog foster that had to make the most difficult decision with her foster.

28 Mar 2023Understanding Trauma, Part One01:12:28

Trigger Warning: This episode discusses trauma and abuse.

In this first episode of our Trauma series, Nikki and Britteny dive into how trauma affects the different parts of the brain.

Understanding how your dog's brain is affected is the first step in helping your dog to cope with their trauma as well as helping them to overcome it.

Psychology today says this about trauma.

Trauma is a person’s emotional response to a distressing experience. Few people can go through life without encountering some kind of trauma. Unlike ordinary hardships, traumatic events tend to be sudden and unpredictable, involve a serious threat to life—like bodily injury or death—and feel beyond a person’s control. Most important, events are traumatic to the degree that they undermine a person's sense of safety in the world and create a sense that catastrophe could strike at any time. Parental loss in childhood, auto accidents, physical violence, sexual assault, military combat experiences, the unexpected loss of a loved one are commonly traumatic events.

If you, or someone you know is suffering from trauma, use this link to find a trauma specialist near you.
