21 Dec 2022#119 The Best Running Shoes of 2022 Part 2 (Racing Shoes and Performance Trainers)00:50:07

We're back with Part 2 of our Best Shoes of 2022. We've tested over 140 shoes in 2022 (!!!) and we're excited to share our favorites of 2022. In this second edition, we're diving into the fast stuff: racing shoes (both short & long distance) and performance trainers. We also cover some of the shoes that disappointed in 2022 and wrap things up with our thoughts on what brands stood out this year.

What each person seeks in a daily can be totally different from the next depending on their running rotation. In this year's Best Of, we decided to NOT have consensus picks as we couldn't come to terms with just picking one shoe as the best daily trainer, or stability shoe, or racing shoe of 2022. With so many variances and specifications for runners, we decided to leave it a bit broader due to the differences in many of the picks and let the shoes do the talking.

Be sure to check out our website to see our full team's picks for every category of shoe.

14 Dec 2022#118 The Best Running Shoes of 2022 Part 1 (Daily Trainers, Max Cushion, Stability and More)00:49:51

It's that time of year! We've tested over 140 shoes in 2022 (!!!) and we're excited to share our favorites of 2022. Over the next two episodes, Matt, David, and Nathan will share their picks for best shoes that came out in 2022. In Part 1, we're starting with our picks for Daily Trainers, Max Cushion, Stable Neutral, Stability and Trail.

Nathan, David, and BJ discuss their experiences with different shoes (both super and "normal") on race day over a variety of different distances, courses, and speeds. They also weigh the impact running economy benefits should have on our shoe decisions. Jennifer Sumner is the Director of the Run Research Team at Brooks. Her passion for injury prevention started with a two-year sports medicine program in high school. From here she went on to study Biomedical Engineering and human movement for topics ranging from ergonomics to tissue engineering and finally into running injury prevention throughout her academic career. She found her passion for applied research in the product space as a research technician for Biomechanigg Inc, evaluating the influence of everything from hockey skates to road bicycles on human movement and performance. She entered the industry as a Research Scientist with New Balance before moving to Brooks, where has been for the last six years. The Brooks passion to build for all who run using science-based insights is what will keep Jennifer with the brand for years to come.

Evan Day is a Manager on the Run Research Team at Brooks overlooking biomechanical testing and research related to Inline Product (<2 years to market) and advancement of Run Signature. He has been an avid runner since his first season of middle school cross country, and became interested in the interaction between the body and footwear after suffering a tibial stress fracture in high school. From there he studied Kinesiology at Iowa State University, where he also did his Master’s in Biomechanics, focused on running injuries. He then continued on to complete his PhD at the University of Oregon in the Bowerman Sports Science Clinic focusing on running performance. He entered the industry working on basketball footwear at adidas, before transitioning to Brooks. Living the opportunity to spend every day obsessing over the granular details of footwear and running biomechanics is a dream come true for him.

In this episode, Nathan, Matt, and David do just that. They take a list of 10 of our favorite shoes from the past year or two (like the Brooks Hyperion Max, Asics Novablast 4, Nike Alphafly 3, and more) and see how their cushioning stacks up. No spoilers here, so you'll have to tune to see how the rankings turned out!
