11 Oct 2020Episode 43: Scr*w Your Spreadsheets! (Season 4 Retrospective)00:45:35

It’s that time again! We’ve reached the end of another season, and so we spend an episode looking back on Season 4, which was a time of enormous change for the show. What were our favourite things from the season, and how does this season stack up against what we’ve seen so far? Does the fact that the majority of this season is missing materially impact our feelings towards it?

Along the way, Julie continues to rave over Jamie, Don brings down a fellow Smith, Anthony once again takes great pleasure in doing his best Professor Zaroff impression, and Reilly makes an unexpected choice for Best Supporting Actor. The entire team take turns to take shots at that most forgettable of stories - The Smugglers.

22 Mar 2020Episode 29: Tor Loser (The Savages)00:42:32

In this episode, “Tor Loser,” the team are off to a place where a ruling upperclass lives off the energy and lifeforce of an oppressed working class. No, it’s not Victorian Britain, but actually The Savages - a story that is bizarrely overlooked by a lot of fans, given that it's really quite good.

This episode, Anthony gets confused on which story we’re meant to be talking about, Julie gets Savage on Reilly, Don doesn’t bash John Wiles (for a change), and Reilly talks about the Doctor’s Reacting Vibrator. The entire crew is surprised when Dodo is actually useful for a change.

For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. You can find the missing episodes on narrated audio in The Lost TV Episodes: Collection Two box set through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3BT5dAh) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3vlQnzY). If you want to watch the reconstruction, you should Google it – we don’t want to be naughty by posting a link to Dailymotion *cough*.

03 Jan 2021Episode 49: It‘s Z Cars or Nothing (Fury from the Deep)01:02:16

This episode, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension struggle to hide their sniggers as the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria face off against some evil weed and its calming effect on people as it tries to take over Earth! It may sound like Reefer Madness, but it’s actually the (sadly) missing story Fury from the Deep!

Over the course of our discussion, Anthony relentlessly makes weed jokes, Julie ponders the seaweed’s relationship with its foam, Reilly laments the poor characterization of Victoria across her run on the show, and Don complains repeatedly about Robson. The whole crew discuss the tropes that are repeated through the entire season – including the legendary BBC foam machine.

For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this story is sadly missing, but there is a full animation available through both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3nfFRqr) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3C3xSmk). Sadly, this is story is not yet available to stream.

08 Mar 2020Episode 28: Flirting with Competence (The Gunfighters)00:46:51

In this episode, “Flirting with Competence,” we’re off to the Wild West so that the Doctor can get a tooth extracted… wait, what!? It’s the kind of thing that could only happen in 60s Doctor Who, and this story is The Gunfighters! Will the Watchers survive the repeated refrains of the infamous Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon?

This time around, Anthony raves about the sets and the costumes, Reilly discusses his struggles with Westerns, Julie sings a delightful little ditty based on The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon, and Don finds himself at odds with Reilly’s opinion for the first time in a while. The entire team discusses accents – unsurprisingly, given that three of the four cast members are born and bred Americans.

05 Dec 2021Episode 73: Peace Through Chicken in Our Time (Season 8 Retrospective)00:53:10

We’re finding it tough to believe that we’re already done with another season! And what a Masterful one Season 8 has been. Literally full of the Master! With that in mind, it’s time for our customary season retrospective, as we look back on the height of the UNIT Family™, Roger Delgado’s superb turn as everyone’s favourite villainous Time Lord, and even a long-awaited jaunt away from Earth!

During the episode, Anthony confesses his love of Mr Chinn (Legend of Politics) and his chicken drumstick, Julie steadily loses patience with Anthony’s nonsense, Don aligns his musical opinions to those of Julie, and Reilly finds himself growing increasingly frustrated with the amount of gunfights. The entire team find themselves more united than ever before in their opinions of a full season.

04 Jul 2021Episode 62: A Review to a Kilt (Troughton-era Retrospective - Live from WHOlanta Virtual TARDIS 2021)00:44:42

Wrapping up the Troughton era, the Watchers are joined by friend-of-the-podcast Alan Siler for a special retrospective of the entire era, recorded LIVE at Wholanta Virtual TARDIS 2021! Alan takes us through a series of questions about the Troughton era as a whole, asking about everything from comparisons to his predecessor, how the companions work in comparison to each other, and our favourite stories of the era – and much, much more!

During the episode, Anthony talks about the severe inconsistency of Season 6, Don discusses how we’re living in the best possible time for experiencing missing episodes, Reilly once again expresses his disdain for historical adventures, and Julie gets her very last opportunity to express her love of Jamie. The entire group discusses the main differences between the Troughton and Hartnell eras.

27 Mar 2022Episode 81: Googly Eyes on Socks (Carnival of Monsters)00:52:27

It’s an unusually low-key story for the Pertwee era, as we handle the classic dual menace of bureaucracy and sock puppets in Carnival of Monsters! Join us as we talk budget serials, grey worlds, Holmesian double acts, monster cameos, and the Doctor’s long-awaited return to regular space-and-time adventuring!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself alone in appreciating the bureaucrats of the serial, Julie continues to find herself please with the direction of the scores this season, Reilly enthuses over the monster design, and Don dreams of re-editing the entire serial. The entire crew find themselves disappointed at the general lack of monsters promised by the story’s title.

13 Mar 2022Episode 80: Doctor Who and the Other Two (The Three Doctors)01:01:29

We’re kicking off Season 10 of Doctor Who in style as our two past stars of the show, Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell, team up with Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor to defeat a truly galactic threat in The Three Doctors! Join us as we talk about this truly special union, the impact it has on our current cast, and whether or not the Brigadier goes a bit bonkers as a result of this serial…

Over the course of the episode, Don ponders whether this serial was sponsored by Clearasil, Reilly re-envisions the fight between the Doctor and Omega as a WWE smackdown-type event, Anthony talks about the fan theory of Season 6B, and Julie finds herself appalled at the prospect of a romantic liaison between her beloved Jamie and Jo. The entire crew discusses whether the Brigadier and Sergeant Benton now count as full-blown companions after travelling in the TARDIS this serial.

During the discussion, Reilly talks about the physicality of Patrick Troughton’s acting, Don compares the Daleks to high school girls, Anthony gets metaphysical, and Julie finds herself pleasantly surprised by how Janley’s role grows through the story. The entire team talks about the new Doctor’s choices in hats (because we’re a hat-obsessed podcast).

17 Jul 2022Episode 89: Peladon? More Like Peladon’t! (The Monster of Peladon)01:00:02

We’re heading back to Peladon for the penultimate serial of the Pertwee era, where a new painfully unassertive monarch has to deal with an uppity religious advisor, rumours of their God being unhappy, difficulty with members of the Galactic Federation, and a minor miner rebellion thrown in for good effect. All stretched out to six episodes, rather than four! Dear god. At least it’ll make for an entertaining conversation!

Along the way, Reilly theorizes that the Doctor deliberately dressed in green, as he was expecting to see Alpha Centauri again, Julie is delighted that someone is finally calling out the Doctor on his incessant name-dropping, Don does his best Alpha Centauri impression, and Anthony finds himself wishing that this was an out-and-out comedy. The entire team discusses how absolutely bonkers Ettis is as a character.

18 Dec 2022Episode 100: Wait, Not Like That! (Planet of Evil)00:46:12

We’re off to the edges of the known universe in a quest for a new power source, as we discuss Planet of Evil! And, oh dear! Season 13 started SO WELL last episode, and (spoilers) goes downhill SO quickly this time around. Le sigh. At least the music’s on point this time around…

Along the way, Julie declares a strong dislike for all men whose names start with the letter “s”; Don explains why if he could re-make any Doctor Who story, it would be this one; Reilly expresses concerns over the mismatch between the sets and the tone; and something went wrong with Anthony’s original recording, and he had to overdub almost all of his dialogue, much like the jungle scenes in this story. The entire team spends the entire episode absolutely slating this serial.

If you would like to watch along with us, this entire season is available for streaming at both Britbox US (https://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (https://www.britbox.co.uk). 17 May 2020Episode 33: Pirates of the Caribboring (The Smugglers)00:30:08

In this episode, “Pirates of the Caribboring” the Watchers kick-start Season 4 with the swashbuckling adventure known only as “The Smugglers.” Oh... maybe “swashbuckling” and “adventure” oversells it a bit?

This episode, Anthony talks censorship, Julie gets excited about the shirtless men of the story, Don discusses his least-favourite trope, and Reilly highlights the Doctor’s boozing. Spoiler alert: the entire team doesn't find much to enjoy about this story.

For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. 01 Jan 2023Episode 101: Geometrically Swole (Pyramids of Mars)00:49:48

This episode, we’re tackling a fan favourite. Coming in at the 7th best Doctor Who serial of all time in Doctor Who Magazine’s 2009 Mighty 200 Poll and at 8th in their 2013 50th Anniversary Poll, it’s safe to say that Pyramids of Mars has an excellent reputation… but will the Watchers agree?

Along the way, Anthony talks of childhood head-canon, Julie gets increasingly concerned with the number of shoulder-rubs-of-death™, Don admires Marcus’ cheekbones, and Reilly gets excited about the return of the country yokel trope. The entire team try to figure out how a female character could potentially fit into the story.

29 Dec 2024Episode 137: Give Me an Ankle, at Least! (State of Decay)01:00:47

It’s Doctor Who-does-Vampires as we encounter everyone’s favourite bloodsuckers in E-Space (well, everyone except Diana, who apparently thoroughly dislikes vampires!) Throw in some absolutely unnecessary Time Lord lore, and we have State of Decay.

Join us as we discuss whether this would feel more natural with Dudley Simpson’s organic music over the synth, the merits and issues of Adric, whether Wil Wheaton and Matthew Waterhouse have ever met, how an old script can somehow feel like a rush-job, the amazing beards in this story, and whether or not Time Lords have a race memory of the vampires. Of course, we try to figure out what the Wasting is – beyond being the Wasting.

30 Jan 2022Episode 77: Flagrant Abuse of Paisley (The Mutants)01:05:59

We’re heading off-world for the second time in a season... What is this, the Troughton era!? Actually, no! The Doctor’s just off on another bizarre mission for the Time Lords to help a poor, oppressed species evolve into superbeings because… reasons? Well, whatever the reasons may be, we’ll be talking about them, as we discuss The Mutants!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony plays historian (again), Julie gets offended by the term “munt,” Reilly espouses his admiration for the direction, and Don ponders alternate casting with Matt Berry as Varan. The entire crew ponder the question of whether or not there are women on Solos, and if not, how the Solonians reproduce...

This episode, we discuss the first return of everyone’s favourite lizardmen as the show revisits the base-under-siege genre in The Seeds of Death! Will the Watchers enjoy it better than their debut adventure? You’ll have to listen to the episode to find out!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony questions why the T-Mat base on the Moon has a hall of mirrors, Don discusses his theory about rear-end size being the status ultimate symbol of the Ice Warriors (#THICC), Julie continues her Jamie love-fest, and Reilly questions how the Ice Warriors’ react to temperature. The entire crew talks traumatic stress and the effective way that it’s represented in this story.

11 Feb 2024Episode 114: Is the Enormous Prawn Horny? (The Invisible Enemy)01:07:14

We (finally) say hello to the legendary robotic pooch known as K9, while we also take on a giant, aggressively randy space prawn virus (yes, seriously!) which just wants to infect everyone and then BREED in The Invisible Enemy. We’ve been crying out for the weird lately… but not like this!

Join us as we discuss cheap (but actually surprisingly good) sets, the disrespect that Leela receives, the good and the bad of the model work, questionable costume choices, the continued gag of Gallifrey being in Ireland, disappointing medical doctors, and the confusion of K9 being introduced with Leela and not Sarah Jane Smith!

09 Oct 2022Episode 95: Big Giant Shiny Metal Balls (The Sontaran Experiment)00:37:28

We’re heading down to a deserted far future Earth, where a baked potato is evaluating a small group of humans for… well… apparently, an invasion… but it seems to be more for plain old sadism. Maybe. Anyway, in this episode we’re discussing The Sontaran Experiment!

Along the way, Reilly once again gets disgusted by the tongue movements of a Sontaran, Anthony asks how these humans totally missed Nerva being in orbit, Julie desires a Doctor Who serial written by Bob Barker and Dean Martin, and Don comes up with new theories about Styre’s motives. The entire team ponders how everything going on with this deserted Earth seems to be happening in the same extremely small geographic area!

Following the precedent set last year, the Watchers once again gather for a special holiday episode in which they discuss a few Doctor Who-related musical “classics.” Once again guided by our very own Don, we kick things off with Jon Pertwee’s spoken word masterpiece “Who is the Doctor?” Next, we follow that up with “Who’s Who?” by Roberta Tovey (aka Suzie Who from the Dalek movies), before wrapping it all up with the Delaware version of the Doctor Who theme. Halp.

08 May 2022Episode 84: At Last, Welsh Teeth! (The Green Death)01:01:23

This episode, we’re off to the valleys to fight against greedy corporations, green slime, and giant maggots, for the most Welsh Doctor Who story of all time, as we discuss the one and only The Green Death! Join us as we talk stereotypes, hippies, and charismatic computers, and (with sorrow) say goodbye to a companion that we have really grown to love.

Over the course of the episode, Anthony brings out the Welsh side of his heritage, Don imagines a version of this story where BOSS was a computerized version of Tobias Vaughn, Julie finds herself disappointed at seeing the Brigadier in a suit, and Reilly wonders whether the loudness of the Doctor’s plaid killed the giant fly. The entire crew fall in love with the Doctor’s various disguises in this serial.

06 Dec 2020Episode 47: Their Matching Skirts Nearly Kilt Me (The Enemy of the World)00:57:24

This episode, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension are travelling back to 2018 – where an egotistical and nefarious world leader is trying to stockpile power through increasingly subversive acts of tyranny. No, it’s not real life – it’s the Doctor Who serial The Enemy of the World, and the world leader in question is Salamander, the doppelganger of our own hero, The Doctor!

Over the course of the discussion, Anthony does some terrible impressions of the Doctor doing terrible impressions of Salamander, Don expresses his desire for Griffin the Chef to join the TARDIS full-time, Reilly talks about the use of rear projection to show the increased budget, and Julie heaps praise on the strong female characters. The entire team discusses the type of relationship that Jamie and Victoria may actually have.

That said, there is a treat in store for anyone who enjoys Julie’s singing!

During the episode, Anthony ponders the potential for profane language from the UNIT troops, Don talks about how Robert Holmes introduces new lore to the show just to avoid potential plot holes, Reilly discovers his love of the new Doctor’s watch, and Julie fixates on yellow phones. The entire team enters into a love fest over Liz Shaw’s skepticism.

15 Oct 2023Bonus Episode 29: The Canadian Alien (Doctor Who and the Pescatons)00:27:29

In our latest bonus episode, the Watchers crew commit the ultimate act of masochism in discussing Doctor Who and the Pescatons, the legendary audio adventure recorded the day after Elisabeth Sladen’s departure from the show was announced to the press and released in between Seasons 13 and 14.

Join us as we discuss this interesting little oddity from Doctor Who’s history, featuring both Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen at the height of their powers in 1976. Listen in as Julie corrects Anthony about woodwinds, Reilly praises the ghost story vibes of the serial, and Anthony stereotypes the entire population of Canada.

23 Oct 2022Episode 96: Sausage Fest of the Daleks (Genesis of the Daleks)01:05:11

And so we get to another truly legendary story of the Tom Baker-era – Genesis of the Daleks. Will the Watchers love this as much as fandom-as-a-whole does, or will the giant clam prove to be just too much? Will the Davros/Nyder pairing be as I C O N I C as expected? And will Julie ever get over the new Production Team’s aversion to women and, as a result, how this serial becomes Sausage Fest of the Daleks?

Along the way, Don gets defensive over his favourite cliffhanger, Julie nerds out on Dudders’ music choices for this serial, Reilly muses on Nyder’s motivation, and Anthony laments the prototype Daleks not looking very prototype-y. The entire team talks about how badly Sarah Jane is treated (yet again) over the course of the serial.

12 Jan 2025Episode 138: The Printer and the BabyBjörn (Warriors' Gate)01:05:07

It’s time to BRING THE WEIRD as we wrap up the E-Space trilogy with a white void, slavers, lion-man slaves (who used to be slavers), magic mirrors, and more questions than answers. Oh, and Adric spends most of the time flipping coins. It can only be Warriors’ Gate!

Join us as we discuss how the Tharils look at time (or how they think they’re better than everyone else), how K9 continues to be done dirty (even up to her last story), the return of the bad boss trope, whether Romana was put in danger of predatory behaviour, the true moral lesson of the story, and how Reilly wants to consign Adric to the same fate as Katarina. To nobody’s surprise, Anthony expresses how he would follow a cult led by Romana.

13 Dec 2020Bonus Episode 7: The War on Happy (2020 Musical Holiday Special)00:15:24

In this bonus episode, “The War on Happy,” the entire Watchers crew convene for a Holiday special, in which they discuss two musical “classics” related to Doctor Who. Guided by our very own Don, we begin with the timeless Christmas classic “I’m Gonna Spend My Christmas with a Dalek” by the Go-Go’s. Not content with the pain that they put themselves through with that, next up is “Who’s Dr. Who?” by the our own Frazer Hines (we’re claiming him).

02 Jun 2024Episode 122: All the Ladies! (The Stones of Blood)00:55:56

Oh wow! It’s the 100th Doctor Who serial! For those who don’t know, that’s The Stones of Blood – a story featuring more women that we’ve seen in a long time (including possibly the greatest batty old lady that we’ve seen to date!), a return to the gothic setting before pivoting to a space courtroom drama, and magnificent stone monoliths made out of polystyrene. What more could you possibly want in a story!?

Join us as we discuss ALL the ladies, David Fisher’s ability to write to sparkling dialogue, whether this story is making fun of the Hinchcliffe era (spoiler: we think it is!), Vivien Fay’s questionable sexuality, and the amazingly bitchy personalities of the Megara – this story is absolute gold. Anthony also posits the theory that this story might be one of Russell T. Davies’ favourite stories.

13 Nov 2022Bonus Episode 24: Lizard-Skinning Vogan-Worshippers (Big Finish - Return of the Cybermen)00:41:50

Anthony and Julie are joined by friend-of-the-podcast R. Alan Siler for this season’s side-step into the realms of audio. This time around, we have chosen to do something a little different – rather than focus on an original audio story, we discuss Return of the Cybermen, which is based on an earlier script for Revenge, and was released as part of Big Finish’s Lost Stories range.

Along the way, Julie rages at some of the casting choices, Anthony struggles with Stevenson’s accent, and Alan has strong feelings about the glitter gun, comparing it to a glam rock stage prop! As you would expect, all three discuss the pros-and-cons of recasting much beloved characters such as Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan.

25 Sep 2022Episode 94: Bad Buggies Go Boom Boom (The Ark in Space)00:54:54

The Fourth Doctor era begins properly as we head off into the far future for The Ark in Space! It’s the first story Produced by the legendary Phillip Hinchcliffe, meaning that the iconic Hinchcliffe/Holmes production team is now fully in place, and they're taking us to a space station in the far future where the future of humanity is at stake – what could possibly go wrong? Aside from the somewhat notorious bubble-wrap SFX, of course…

Along the way, Julie questions Sarah’s use of an oil lamp vs. a torch, Reilly draws parallels to the work of David Cronenburg, Anthony leans into British stereotypes, and Don imagines Harry Sullivan being played by Hugh Laurie. The entire team discusses how amazing and atmospheric the sets are, proving that brightly lit sets can work well!

09 May 2021Episode 58: No Other Women in Space (The Space Pirates)00:51:36

This episode, we bring to you our discussion of a story that is, in the eyes of fandom, one of the worst stories of all time. Seriously, in Doctor Who Magazine’s 50th Anniversary poll, it came in at 7th last. It’s also the last story to have missing episodes. That’s right, it’s the one and only The Space Pirates! Will we find it as bad as accepted wisdom would have it?

Over the course of the episode, Don questions the justice system of the time that this is set in, Julie continues to fangirl over Jamie, Anthony questions the decision to merge the pirate and cowboy genres and then set the whole thing in space, and Reilly gets the name of The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon wrong and attempts to fix in post-production with some hilariously bad dubbing. As a group, the crew ponders the potential of a The Adventures of Milo Clancy spin-off.

For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this story is sadly missing – the existing episodes are available as part of the Lost in Time DVD boxset through Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3pea8s9) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3pmd2em). The audio of the missing episodes is available as part of The Lost Episodes: Collection Five CD boxset, available Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3jl0H6p) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3G7gq31). 22 Sep 2024Episode 130: A Thrilling Conversation About Insurance (Nightmare of Eden)01:02:56

We’re tackling the war on drugs in a delightfully zany story by one half of the Bristol Boys – Nightmare of Eden! This one is filled with so many ideas that it can only be a Bob Baker script – spaceship crashes, insurance conversations, conservation efforts, and needlessly complex drug running schemes. While Season 17 may not quite be at the heights of Season 14 (the pinnacle, so far!), it sure is fun to talk about!

Join us as we discuss how hyperspace travel might work, the joys of insurance, the brilliance of Tryst, similarities to Carnival of Monsters, late-1970s British drug culture, the ethics of the CET machine, and the police uniforms of the future (and why they should be adopted NOW!) Also, Julie calls out the Doctor on his nonsense.

18 Aug 2024Bonus Episode 37: A Collection of Dodo Don'ts (The Celestial Toymaker Animation)00:47:42

It’s a full house, as we are joined by both Alan Siler and Diana Birney to discuss the recent animation of The Celestial Toymaker. Will it be the best animation yet, or nothing more than psychedelic nightmare fuel?

Join us as we discuss the pros and cons of the controversial animation style, whether Dodo is the worst companion of all time, the racist under/overtones of the story, possible other animation styles for future missing episode animations, and whether this story might benefit from a full remake by David Lynch. Of course, we consider whether the animation actually improves the story.

21 Nov 2021Episode 72: The Yokels of Death (The Dæmons)01:06:16

It’s a classic tale of occult shenanigans in a small South West England village as the Master dresses up as a vicar, Benton finds himself an on-screen admirer, the Doctor goes hard on the science-vs-magic debate, and Jo is (for some bizarre reason) willing to sacrifice herself for him, even though he’s awful to her for the whole story. It can only be Season 8’s finale, The Dæmons!

During the episode, Julie’s love of Benton reaches a whole new level, Reilly espouses his admiration for Professor Horner, Don accuses the show of trying to have its cake and eat it, and Anthony gets his occult on. We also all discuss how a Sergeant Benton & Miss Hawthorne spin-off would be absolutely perfect.

09 Aug 2020Episode 39: A More Localized Terrible Idea (The Moonbase)00:39:26

Everyone’s second favourite Doctor Who monsters are back, as the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension once again encounter the Cybermen, along with weather control, poisoned sugar, and a rag-tag group of Europeans. It can only be The Moonbase!

Over the course of the episode, Don talks about Cybermen design, Reilly is disappointed by the absence of the Doctor wearing a hat in this story, Anthony raves over the international vibe of the moonbase, and Julie questions the obsession that fiction has with controlling the weather. The entire crew discusses the alleged misogyny in the story, with Polly being sent off to make the coffee (which actually leads to the main mystery of the first couple of episodes being solved…).

If you want to watch along with us, half of this story is sadly missing. However, the BBC have released the surviving episodes on DVD, along with animations of the two missing episodes, and you can acquire it through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3E0ap6l) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/2XuZG4c).

15 Dec 2024Episode 136: Dungeons & Dragons: Mistfall (Full Circle)00:58:34

We’re off into E-Space this episode, as we encounter a group of people who’ve come full circle in… uh… Full Circle! We are also introduced to our newest companion, Adric. What will the Watchers think of him!? Will it be love at first sight? (Let’s be honest… probably not. Everyone knows his reputation!)

Join us as we discuss unexpected semi-nudity (butts!), the mathematical nature of the Starliner’s society (and how they evolved to it), how Dungeons & Dragons keeps coming into this Season, the names of the Starliner dwellers, how the Deciders must have rehearsed their introductions on multiple occasions, and where the lesser known Alzarian Cat fits into the evolutionary stage. We round it all out with Diana’s theory on what happens to the Starliner dwellers after they leave Alzarius…

We kick Season 13 off with Terror of the Zygons, and we’re off to the Scottish Highlands, where the Brigadier wears a kilt, Benton returns, the Doctor wears a Glengarry, Sarah has stuff to do, and Harry gets shot… wait, did Julie write this one!? Maybe not, but this one seems right up her alley! Join us we discuss what is undoubtedly an extremely strong start to the season!

Along the way, Don marvels at Broton’s pettiness, Reilly finds relief at Sarah getting some characterization again, Anthony reveals his very strong feelings about Jim Carrey, and Julie has some very strong feelings about the Zygons’ relationship with the Skarasen. The entire team talk about how much they’ve missed Dougie Camfield’s direction.

05 May 2024Episode 120: Missing the Junk in the Trunk (The Ribos Operation)01:04:44

The Watchers universe became so out-of-balance during the turbulent times of Season 15 that the White Guardian has summoned us all and instructed us to find the Key to Time so that we may bring balance back to fandom! That can only mean one thing: we’re kicking off Season 16’s Key to Time saga with The Ribos Operation!

Join us as we discuss our new companion(!), Holmesian double-acts, the smart use of the Shrivenzale, the touching relationship between the Graff and Shollack, and the original plan to have Garron be Australian. We also get into a little bit of a heated debate on whether Binro was a good addition to the story.

25 Aug 2024Episode 128: K9 Hates French People (City of Death)01:03:51

We’re off to Paris (don’t you think it has a bouquet?) for what is held up by many as the outstanding adventure of Season 17 – City of Death! Will we find it as endearing as the majority of fandom seems to (8th in DWM’s Mighty 200 poll and 5th in the 50th anniversary poll, don’tcha know)? Well, you’ll have to listen in to find out!

Join us as we discuss the clear step-up in both SFX and model work, the absolutely sparkling dialogue, whether Count Scarlioni is the best-dressed man in all of Doctor Who, Duggan’s questionable method of just punching things, and whether Countess Scarlioni just thought that her husband was gay (and not a spaghetti alien). Of course, we have to rag on the French (it just had to be done!)

03 Nov 2024Episode 133: Would Somebody Think of the Children!? (Season 17 Retrospective)00:56:02

Another season in the can, bringing the 1970s era of the show to a close. Of course, that means that it’s time for our customary season retrospective, where we’ll look back at the entirety of Season 17 with our usual blend of end-of-season awards, a look back at our scores and metric counts, and answer a few questions from our friends on our social media platforms. These are always a lot of fun to do, so don’t miss out!

Join us as we discuss whether the glee club in Shada was necessary or not, buyer’s remorse over how we rated Season 15, what sort of alcohol this season would be, and whether we’ve finally warmed up to Romana II. We also award our very first-ever Dudley Simpson Award for Outstanding Achievement, thus opening up the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension Hall of Fame! In this episode, “No (Terrance) Dicks, No Lava Lamps” the Watchers crew tread somewhat familiar, yet slightly different ground, as they discuss the second Peter Cushing Dalek movie, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.

This episode, Anthony can’t resist a final cheeky dig at Richard Martin, Julie talks about the diminishment of the role of women in the film, Don gets excited over the use of fetish gear, and Reilly ponders how Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 B.C.(!) might have worked out. Naturally, the entire team find themselves repeatedly comparing the film to the original TV serial.

19 Dec 2021Episode 74: Slight Moment of the Daleks (Day of the Daleks)00:56:21

It’s guerillas, gorillas, and Daleks, as we kick off Season 9 with Day of the Daleks - a tale of peace conferences, dystopian futures, and bootstrap paradoxes. Will this be the season where the Third Doctor finally comes into his own, or will we continue to struggle with his bad attitude? And will the Production Team finally give poor Jo something to do again!?

Over the course of the episode, Julie sets a new record for losing her patience with the lads, Anthony redefines UNIT’s remit, Don goes above and beyond on the assignment and watches two versions of the story, and Reilly espouses his “Law of the Conservation of Dickery.” The entire team discuss their delight at how much improved the Doctor is after Season 8 – but will it continue?

If you would like to watch along with us, this story is available for streaming at both Britbox US (http://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (http://www.britbox.co.uk). 20 Oct 2024Episode 132: Such is the Burden of a Yokel (Shada)01:24:36

While The Horns of Nimon was officially the end of Season 17, efforts have been made over the years to complete the unfinished story that was meant to be the season finale – Shada. And we are discussing the “definitive” version of that story that released on the 2021 Blu Ray release, mixing live action with animation in an episodic format. Given that the production team had hoped that this story would make everyone forget The Horns of Nimon, we ask – is this story as great as its legendary reputation would have it?

Join us as we discuss the edits that had to be made to make it work (including new music, FX, and a couple of short scenes), Skagra’s bonkers plan and his amazingly camp stylings, how this story could had been a four-parter, the pettiness of artificial intelligence, and (of course) Tom being Tom. Meanwhile, Reilly imagines how this could look in live action with plenty of alien villains in the prison on Shada!

08 Sep 2024Episode 129: Hairy Rolling Balls (The Creature from the Pit)00:48:52

In this episode of the podcast, we demonstrate what utter masochists we are by subjecting ourselves to the absolute mess that is The Creature from the Pit. Oh boy. We’re just going to say it up front. We hated it. There you go. That’s the potted review, right here in the blurb. But to hear just how frustrated and annoyed we get at this story, go ahead and listen to the podcast episode. We promise that it’s quite an enjoyable show.

Join us as we discuss whether the story actively knows how stupid it is, the presence of dominatrixes, the function of the larynx, the return of a legendary actress first seen in the original Doctor Who serial, how the design of the story is somehow obsessed with male genitalia, and how con artists eventually start believing their own nonsense. This story infuriates Anthony so much that he gets quite, quite sweary…

08 Oct 2023Episode 105: If You Can Make It Fit... (Season 13 Retrospective)01:03:37

Over six months after recording our episode on The Seeds of Doom, Anthony, Julie, and Reilly make a return to talking about Doctor Who with our Season 13 retrospective!

Join us as we approach the season with our usual blend of qualitative and quantitative measures and questions from our friends on social media. Along the way, we touch upon the amazing (yes, hello Terror of the Zygons and The Brain of Morbius), questionable creative choices (looking at you Planet of Evil), the disappointments (the phasing out of UNIT), and, of course, we ask the ultimate question of “who will get the Dickie this season?”

It’s our first regular episode as a trio, so make sure that you check out the All-New Watchers in the Fourth Dimension!™

18 Oct 2020Bonus Episode 6: Nobody Likes This, But It‘ll Be Cheap (Missing Episodes Panel from Dragon Con Goes Virtual 2020)00:51:18

With many conventions forced to go virtual in 2020, we were invited to participated in a panel for DragonCon, in which we discussed Doctor Who’s Missing Episodes. The result is this special bonus episode, in which we are joined by our old friend R. Alan Siler, and the Director of Dragon Con’s British Media Track (aka the “Brittrack”), Caro McCully Tidwell. If you would prefer to watch the panel, rather than listen, it can also be found on the Brittrack’s YouTube page (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBUvs6-m0WA).

As you would expect from such a discussion, the group discusses why Doctor Who has missing episodes, where any surviving episodes could possibly be hiding (and the chances of anything else showing up), as well as the various attempts over the years to bridge the gaps. And, naturally, a missing episodes discussion just isn’t complete without a discussion on most wanted stories for return.

24 May 2020Bonus Episode 5: Dammit Susan! (Big Finish - The Library of Alexandria)00:25:36

In this bonus episode, “Dammit Susan” Anthony and Julie discuss Julie’s first Big Finish experience, with “The Library of Alexandria” – a Companion Chronicle narrated by Ian Chesterton himself, William Russell!

Join them as they discuss the history of the library, including how it was really destroyed, as well as the budding romance in the story, jealousy, and Susan being Susan. As you'd expect, there's a fair amount of discussion as to how Julie enjoyed her first Big Finish audio.

17 Oct 2021Bonus Episode 13: Our Chonky Bois (The Web of Fear - Episode 3 Animation)00:21:22

It’s another bonus episode of Watchers in the Fourth Dimension, as the crew discusses the recent animation of The Web of Fear, Episode 3!

In our discussion, we ponder the key questions – what did we all think of the new animation style? Does it adequately fill the gap in the story? How does the animation compare to other releases? And would we want to see more of this animation style?

If you would like to watch along with us, this animation is sadly not yet available to stream. However, you can pick it up on The Web of Fear – Special Edition DVD, available from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3DfOffK) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3ajABMd)

06 Oct 2024Episode 131: Pour One Out for Dudders (The Horns of Nimon)01:02:12

It’s time for us to discuss what was unexpectedly the season finale of Season 17. The last contributions to the show of Graham Williams, Douglas Adams, Dudley Simpson, and Anthony Read. It also has the reputation of being one of the worst Doctor Who stories of all time. It’s The Horns of Nimon. But will the Watchers find it to be as absolutely terrible as fandom would have it?

Join us as we discuss the weakness of the kids (are they actually WEAKLING SCUM!?), the OTT portrayal of Soldeed, whether or not the Nimon were effective, where all the women are, and whether the Production Team were simply taking the piss with this story. Also, don’t miss out on Anthony’s outstanding Soldeed impression!

13 Feb 2022Episode 78: Time Ram, Thank You Ma’am! (The Time Monster)01:07:15

It’s another season finale as everyone’s favourite moustache-twirling renegade Time Lord returns to unleash the power of Kronos on the universe. Oh, and cause a headache for everyone across the fandom the destruction of Atlantis for the third(?) time. Join us as we discuss what is possibly the thirstiest Doctor Who story to date in The Time Monster!

Over the course of the episode, Julie appreciates Ruth’s upfront-and-centre feminism, Don expresses his horror over the new TARDIS set, Reilly talks about the Master’s love of old administrators, and Anthony ponders whether Dudders upped his game to avoid being permanently replaced. The entire crew question the wisdom of the design of the Doctor’s rather phallic time detector…

27 Oct 2024Bonus Episode 38: He Also Double Tapped It (The Vampire Lovers and Dr. Terror's House of Horrors)00:47:41

Welcome, once again, to our annual house of horror! As usual, we discuss two horror movies featuring the stars of television’s Doctor Who. This year, we kick off proceedings with Hammer Films’ The Vampire Lovers (featuring Ingrid Pitt, Peter Cushing, and Kate O’Mara), before moving on to Amicus Production’s first anthology film, Dr Terror’s House of Horrors (featuring Peter Cushing, Roy Castle, and Michael Gough). This year, our good friend Diana Birney joins us for the ride!

Join us as we discuss classist lesbianism (dammit, Carmilla/Marcilla!), gratuitous nudity, the best place for biting to draw blood, the heartlessness of killing a dog in one of the movies, killer kudzu, why Biff had to die (and why his couch is a sign of that coming), the joy of Christopher Lee facing off against Michael Gough, and the British love of trains. Anthony also talks about one of his childhood nightmares.

10 Oct 2021Episode 69: HAVOC Don‘t Come For Free (The Mind of Evil)01:07:02

Peace conferences! Lobotomy by alien brain parasite! Prison takeovers! Chemical missile theft! More disguises! It’s all in a day’s work for the UNIT folks, as we discuss The Master’s second outing on Doctor Who in The Mind of Evil.

Over the course of the episode, Reilly finds himself a new favourite member of the UNIT team, Julie plays Yates off against Benton, Anthony questions why UNIT are on security duty for a peace conference, and Don is pleased at the avoidance of the “horrible boss” trope. As a group, we discuss whether or not this serial displays racism towards the people of China.

23 Aug 2020Episode 40: Like Dirty Dancing, but With Crabs (The Macra Terror)00:45:08

There is no such thing as the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension! The Watchers in the Fourth Dimension do not exist! Huh? Well, it must be time for us to take an anti-authoritarian stance and discuss The Macra Terror!

Over the course of the episode, Don calls out the incompetence of middle management, Reilly discusses the usage of media indoctrination in this story (and how prescient it is), Anthony talks about the British class system and how the holiday camp setting feeds into that, and Julie gets excited over the Doctor’s use of a screwdriver. The whole team discusses the design of the Macra - whether they actually worked in the original, and if they were maybe better realized in animated form.

If you want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. However, the BBC have released an animated version on DVD and Blu Ray, and you can acquire it through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3lXCBQQ) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3C06pC5) .

13 Sep 2020Episode 41: Almost Dodo‘d (The Faceless Ones)00:51:22

It’s a farewell to a couple of series regulars as we discuss a mostly-lost-but-recently-animated story in the shape of The Faceless Ones! What will the judgement be – missing classic, or are we not missing much with this one?

Over the course of the episode, Don develops a small obsession with the “airport creeper,” Reilly casually insults an entire city, Anthony ponders whether the Chameleons had watched any James Bond films, and Julie defends the United States Postal Service. The whole team find themselves pondering how the Chameleons had kidnapped 50,000 people, with only one person noticing.

If you want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. However, the BBC have released an animated version on DVD and Blu Ray, and you can acquire it through either Amazon UK or Amazon US.

11 Sep 2022Episode 93: The Doctor Does a Drive-By (Robot)01:07:31

It’s that point of our journey where we finally have reached the legendary Tom Baker, as we kick-off his era with Robot! But will his debut live up to expectations? We also say a final “goodbye” to Producer Barry Letts and his love of bad CSO, and former Script Editor Terrance Dicks signs-off with the script. Listen in as we re-tread some of the UNIT-era tropes to welcome our new Doctor!

Along the way, Don admires the Brigadier’s snark, Reilly talks about the jarring use of videotape for location shooting, Julie accuses Anthony of worrying too much, and Anthony in turn accuses her of sounding like his mother. The entire crew talks about how terrible the SRS are at thinking through their nefarious plans.

21 Apr 2024Episode 119: Like an Undercooked Cake (Season 15 Retrospective)01:04:09

It’s our customary season retrospective, as we take a look back at Season 15. If you’ve been following the podcast as we’ve talked through each story, you’ll know that we’ve fully embraced our controversial era: disliking the stories that fandom loves, and loving the stories that the fandom hates – but how will they all stand-up to our usual blend of awards, metrics, and questions from our followers?

Join us as we talk about why Underworld is the best story of the season, which character Anthony desperately wants to punch, plenty about the horny prawn (of course!), the child-friendly decision to bring in a robot dog (yay K9!), and how we would have written out Leela in an ideal situation.

15 May 2022Bonus Episode 20: Kinderhorror (Big Finish - The Scorchies)00:50:04

It’s time for a bonus episode, in which all four of us are joined by our good friend Naomi (aka @thewhovian_gal on Instagram), as we discuss the Season 10-adjacent Big Finish adventure The Scorchies! Join us as we talk about one of the most weird and bonkers stories to date! Oh, and did we mention that this is Don’s first Big Finish experience? Because it’s Don’s first Big Finish experience!

Along the way, Don focuses on Scorchies’ the absurdly dark back story, Naomi and Julie bond over their mutual love of Sergeant Benton (and dislike of Captain Yates), Reilly questions the mechanics behind the reversal of reversing the polarity of the neutron flow, and Anthony embarrassingly confuses two of his co-hosts. The entire crew try to figure out which Scorchie is which, and which ones are their favourites (and Reilly gets a little upset at Julie’s omission of Cool Cat).

In this episode, “The WOTAN Clan,” the team head to contemporary Earth for the first time since Planet of Giants. And this time, the TARDIS crew are full size! All this and more as we tackle The War Machines!

This episode, Julie finds her first directorial snafu, Anthony ponders what WOTAN plans to do once he’s taken over, Don writes and recites a bad haiku, and Reilly enthuses over the more modern directing. Everyone is genuinely disappointed about Dodo’s departure, which happens just as soon as she starts being a decent companion!

01 Aug 2021Episode 64: Costume Change Level: Zoe (Doctor Who and the Silurians)00:56:29

This episode, we discuss our very first encounter with the other intelligent species from Earth in Doctor Who and the Silurians. Suffice to say that living through a pandemic, we all find ourselves somewhat triggered as we watch a deadly disease spread across England in this one!

During the episode, Reilly talks two-state solutions, Anthony focuses on the “otherness” of the Doctor, Julie gets offended by humans being repeatedly referred to as “apes,” and Don questions why the initial problem of the research facility losing power was considered a UNIT problem. The entire gang questions the wisdom of writing a dinosaur into the script and whether it was actually needed (spoiler: it’s not).

15 Aug 2021Episode 65: Vicious Quatermassturbation (The Ambassadors of Death)01:02:28

This episode, it is our Moral Duty™ to take Quatermass homage to the extreme, engaging in some “Vicious Quatermassturbation” as we discuss The Ambassadors OF DEATH! It’s time for incompetent military forces (possibly including murdering scientists?), conspiracies, and plenty of model sequences!

Over the course of the episode, Don talks miraculously disappearing accents, Reilly finds that he’s unable to say “Taltalian”, Anthony gets nostalgic about UK Gold, and Julie laments the general lack of women on screen. The entire team discuss this serial's rather inconsistent usage of plot-selective radioactivity (or is it actually just good ol' Whitakerian static electricity?).

We kick off an exceedingly Masterful new season of Doctor Who, as the one and only Robert Holmes is once again called in to helm another soft-reboot with Terror of the Autons! Join us as we discuss the introduction of one of the show’s iconic villains, the return of the Autons, and some of the most unnecessary special effects the show has seen to date!

During the episode, Don fixates on the digestive impact of eggs, Reilly ponders the increasingly antagonistic dynamics between the Brigadier and the Third Doctor, Julie confronts her fear of creepy dolls, and Anthony goes on a tangent about the rank structure of the British military. The whole crew find themselves concerned by the Doctor’s tempestuous attitude throughout this story.

12 Jan 2020Episode 24: Bring Back the Corpse of Dennis Spooner (The Daleks‘ Master Plan - Episodes 7-12)00:52:16

Having covered the first half of the story in our last episode, we’re back in Bring Back the Corpse of Dennis Spooner to discuss episodes 7 through 12 of The Daleks’ Master Plan! This time around, Don continues his vendetta against John Wiles, Julie pines for more of the Meddling Monk, Reilly wishes for some Dalek situational comedy in the style of The Office, while Anthony expresses his disappointment over the lack of the Evil Christmas Tree delegate. All the while, the entire team continues their debate over which delegate is which.

Ruggs and Mrs. Wiggs, Julie talks about chairs, and Don talks about why John Wiles was so bad for the very last time. 25 Oct 2020Episode 44: The Cyberman Outreach Program (The Tomb of the Cybermen)00:47:18

After a brief diversion in the shape of our Dragon Con panel, we are BACK to continue our journey through all of Doctor Who as we get started with Season 5 of the show. This episode, we discuss a story where our heroes get drawn into a remake of The Mummy starring a rag-tag group of archaeologists, some logicians, and the Cybermen… it’s The Tomb of the Cybermen!

Over the course of the episode, Julie praises Victoria’s characterisation, Anthony’s mind goes to the gutter, Reilly ponders whether the Scrubbing Bubbles brand is part of a Cyberman plot, and Don discusses the inferiority complex of the Brotherhood of Logicians. The whole team questions the archaeological method on display in this story and whether it was sensible in any way, shape, or form.

14 Feb 2021Episode 52: Replacement Hot Blonde (The Dominators)00:43:27

This episode, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension kick off Season 6 of Doctor Who with a more of a whimper than a bang, as they tackle a story that involves two hostile turtles as they seek to dominate an entire planet of hippies and turn it into a radioactive ball of lava. It’s that rather misjudged attempt at satire, known only as The Dominators…

Over the course of our discussion, Don questions the impact of this story on the reputation of the Dominators themselves, Anthony talks about the homogeny of the Dulcians, Julie focuses in on Jamie’s kilt (as usual), and Reilly finds a way to draw a parallel between this story and horror movies! The entire crew question some of the costuming choices, and wonder what was going on with the costume designer…

09 Feb 2025Episode 140: Let Me Speak With Your Manager (Logopolis)01:13:55

It’s the end, but the moment has been prepared for… (were we ever going to start out this blurb with anything else!?) We finally reach the end of Tom Baker’s seven year tenure on the show with the Master embarking on a bonkers scheme that threatens the entire universe. But one question remains – is Logopolis actually any good!?

Join us as we discuss dressing for job that you want, why Tegan is magnificently annoying in the best way possible, how this story plays into the history of the podcast, the stupidity of some of the Doctor’s plans, how Logopolitan society is based on Kabbalah, how camp the new Master is, and how Adric actually does math. Oh, and Anthony pokes plot holes in the plan to save the universe…

07 Nov 2021Episode 71: Hot Colony Mud Wrestling (Colony in Space)01:04:38

We’re on alien planet for the first time since The Krotons! It’s corporations vs. colonizers, with an ancient weapon of mass destruction in the background! Oh, and since its Season 8, the Master shows up, in disguise. Sort of. Whatever. It’s one of the less-loved serials of the season in Colony in Space!

During the episode, Reilly gets his lawyer on, Julie gets frustrated at the role given to Jo (or, rather, lack of role), Anthony discusses the sunk cost fallacy and its relevance to this serial, and Don has never been so happy to see a quarry. We all contemplate this serial's similarities to the very earliest serials in Doctor Who.

17 Dec 2023Episode 110: Murder on the Kill-All-Humans Express (The Robots of Death)01:04:51

This episode, we’re off to a sandminer on a distant planet where a psychopath who believes is a robot is systematically killing off his colleagues (Agatha Christie-style) in order to create a robot revolution. Sounds convoluted, but it’s actually really good – it’s The Robots of Death!

Join us as we discuss Chris Boucher’s amazing world building (again), complex interpersonal relations, the continued love for Leela, the hilarious character names (Chubb lol), which characters are sleeping with which (because, let’s be honest, this lot are stuck together for months on end, you know it’s happening…), and whether this is the best Doctor Who serial that we’ve seen so far…

01 Oct 2023Bonus Episode 28: A Good Carburetor is What Life’s All About (Tribute to Don and Phantom of the Paradise)00:48:16

In what is probably our saddest bonus episode yet, we say goodbye to our fallen comrade Don. Join us as the three of us give our own tributes to him and read some of the absolutely tremendous tributes that came in from our listeners. We also discuss the movie Phantom of the Paradise – a film that Don truly loved. He spent a significant amount of time trying (and failing) to find a connection to Doctor Who so that we could cover it on the podcast - what better way to pay tribute to our friend than to discuss it?

In this bonus episode, “Will They, Won’t They?” Anthony and Julie discuss the Second and First Doctor cross-over story from Big Finish - Daughter of the Gods, by David K. Barnes. Part of Big Finish’s 20th anniversary celebrations, this was conceived as being done in the style of a hypothetical 5th anniversary special, and features both the First and Second Doctors!

In this episode, “Yeeted by Cutlery” the Watchers say “hello!” to a new favourite monster, meet an overly aggressive American military commander, and bid farewell to the First Doctor - all in the setting of the South Pole. It’s time for us to discuss The Tenth Planet!

This episode, Reilly talks about the true threat of the story, Julie discusses the imbalance among the TARDIS crew, Anthony is surprised about an infodump working for once, and Don questions Ben’s ability as a military man. The entire team gets excited about the introduction of the Cybermen, and discuss literally everything about them – from their costumes and voices to how they were defeated.

03 Jul 2022Episode 88: The C-Team Daleks (Death to the Daleks)00:58:47

Terry Nation is BACK with Death to the Daleks, so we have to discuss it in our latest podcast episode, The C-Team Daleks, in which we attempt to answer the ultimate question – “Is Terry Nation taking the piss?” Additional questions asked include “why can’t he write for women?” and “is this bad, or is this good?” Listen in to hear us fail to definitively answer any of these questions!

During the episode, Julie questions the choice of musical theme for the Daleks, Anthony appreciates Michael Briant’s moments of enjoyably heavy-handed direction, Reilly discovers that he’s only grossed out by visuals and not sound, and Don compares Terry Nation to a toy collector. The entire team debates the existence of a character called Jack (#JusticeForJack).

10 Mar 2024Episode 116: Saved by a Jelly Baby (The Sun Makers)00:59:26

Are you an outgoing script editor? Do you have a grievance against a government agency? Is it specifically the tax authority? Well, why not write an entire serial of a kids’ show about the unfair burden of taxes? It’s a sure-fire winner, right?!? Right!?!? Even if not, it’s what happened for us to get The Sun Makers. Good job, Robert Holmes. Thankfully, your three favourite members of Watchers in the Fourth Dimension are here to dissect it for you!

Join us as we discuss the unfair burden of taxes (surprise, surprise), the Doctor being a sore loser, whether the Collector is an anti-semetic trope, whether or not Leela and Bisham actively ran over some Inner Retinue guards, and how we miss Vicki and Jamie helping to foment rebellion. Lastly, Anthony attempts to fire Reilly and Julie from the podcast over their dislike of jelly babies. What heathens.

16 Jan 2022Episode 76: Rise of the Moustache Brigade (The Sea Devils)01:06:00

The Silurians are back, but in aquatic form! And disappointingly called Sea Devils and not Sealurians, because someone decided that they wanted to avoid further scientific inaccuracies. Disappointment over the name of the creatures aside, we spend the episode discussing The Sea Devils - a rollicking adventure that also includes everyone's favourite bearded Time Lord renegade, as well as some jaunts with the Royal Navy. What fun!

Over the course of the episode, Julie praises the fine Naval beards on display, Anthony overuses nautical puns (much to the chagrin of the rest of the team), Don takes note of the amount of food consumed in this serial, and Reilly pinpoints the moment that the Third Doctor becomes “cool.” The entire team takes note of Jo’s outfit and ponder the question of style vs. dry cleaning bills.

21 Aug 2022Bonus Episode 21: This Shouty Scottish Man (Big Finish - Sympathy for the Devil)00:31:58

Anthony and Julie get together for our Season 11 Big Finish bonus episode, as they are off to Hong Kong in an alternative universe to discuss Sympathy for the Devil from the Doctor Who: Unbound range! This episode was recorded before the news broke of the sad passing of David Warner, and is dedicated to his memory. He was an amazing actor, and will be missed by so, so many people. Our thoughts continue to be with his friends and family.

Along the way, Julie finds herself thinking that there’s something more to the Buddhist Abbott than meets the eye (or ear?), and Anthony wonders what happened to the other mind parasites that arrived on Earth in the regular Doctor Who universe. They both try to make sense of which of the Master’s plots would’ve happened without the Doctor stopping what happened in The Mind of Evil.

Along the way, Don ponders whether the Master cooked fish in the UNIT microwave, Anthony asks whether anyone on the Production Team actually knew any women, Julie manages to avoid mentioning Benton while the crew talk about UNIT (until prompted, at least), Alan draws parallels between the development of the Third and Twelfth Doctors, and Reilly issues a plea for Pertwee’s interview of Shatner to be re-uploaded to the internet. The crew once again wraps things up with a game of snog, marry, exterminate – with hilarious consequences!

Alan can also be found in the following places:

26 Jan 2020Episode 25: I‘m Not a Proctologist, But... (The Massacre)00:48:06

With the Doctor and Steven now travelling alone after the events of the Dalek epic, we follow them on their next adventure in a fun romp called The Massacre. Uh, except... maybe it's not a fun romp, with a name like that.

This time around, Julie gets historical, Anthony gets excited about hats, Reilly compares Steven to a lost child looking for his Dad, and Don once again continues his vendetta against John Wiles. The entire crew talk debate whether this story is the missing classic that received fandom wisdom believes it to be.

18 Feb 2024Bonus Episode 34: The Daleks Have Blue Balls! (The Daleks... in Colour!)00:44:34

It’s time for a bonus episode! We are joined by our wonderful friend Diana Birney as we return to the very beginning, to discuss the recent re-edited, re-scored, and colourised version of The Daleks!

Join us as we talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly of this. And there’s probably more bad and ugly than good, to be honest… still, even though they cut the “Baebara” storyline and removed any actual tension from the story, at least we get to see Barbara’s amazingly garish pink cardigan. Small blessings, amirite…?

If you would like to watch along with us, the animated version of this story is available on iPlayer in the UK, and is available on Blu Ray from both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/42Izkst) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/49e4pqu).

We discussed the original version of this serial in our 2nd ever episode, Sex Pants and Naivete – check it out for a more detailed discussion of the plot here: https://bit.ly/3ut84BT

23 Jan 2023Podcast Announcement00:01:23

Anthony makes a very brief statement with some extremely sad podcast news.

10 Sep 2023Episode 103: Do Not Steal Employees’ Limbs (The Brain of Morbius)00:59:26

After over seven months since it was originally recorded, we finally bring you our episode in which we discuss the canon-busting story that The Brain of Morbius! Recorded before our brother Don passed away, we truly believe that this is one of our best episodes to date, featuring some absolutely spectacular conversation, and really does mark a special way for us to come back from a long hiatus.

Join us as we talk about our dislikes of the Time Lords, while Don espouses his appreciation for brains in jars, Reilly expresses his affection for Condo (even advocating for a Big Finish Condo spin-off!), Anthony appreciates how theatrical this story is, and Julie develops a true love of the Sisterhood of Karn. Of course, no discussion of this story would be complete without talking about the implications of the Doctor/Morbius mind-battle...

If you would like to watch along with us, this story is available for streaming at both Britbox US (https://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (https://www.britbox.co.uk). 09 Feb 2020Episode 26: George Maharis, Risk Taker (The Ark)00:44:11

This week, we discuss a thrilling adventure in which new companion Dodo is suffering from a cold. That’s right – it’s The Ark, a story with some rather uncomfortable undertones.

This episode, Anthony talks British colonialism, Reilly makes use of his film degree by praising the direction, Julie explains medical things, and Don talks about the trope of invisible beings with supernatural powers in sci-fi. All four of the cast keep coming back to the question of whether or not this story’s rather racist undertones were by intent or out of ignorance.

For those who want to watch along with us, this story is one of the few stories from Season 3 that exists in its entirety! You can find the DVD on either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3BU70p5) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3jcweY8). If you prefer streaming, it’s also available on both Britbox US (http://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (http://www.britbox.co.uk)!

20 Jun 2021Episode 61: Hot Space Garbage (Season 6 Retrospective)00:50:21

This episode, the Watchers look back on the extreme highs and even more extreme lows of Season 6 in their latest trademark Season retrospective, blending award-show style categories, qualitative measures, and questions put to us by our audience via social media.

Over the course of the episode, Don talks about the destructive impacts of the Quarks on their creators’ careers, Anthony gets himself mixed up between The Dominators and The Krotons (blame the 1990s VHS releases), Julie continues her Jamie obsession (knowing that this is one of her last opportunities to do so), and Reilly completely fails to accurately anticipate who everyone else will choose as “best regular.” Together, the team ponder whether they will ever re-watch The Space Pirates.

07 Apr 2024Episode 118: Effectively Getting Susan'd (The Invasion of Time)01:10:42

Gallifrey, Vardans, AND Sontarans!? What is this madness!? Well, The Invasion of Time, apparently. Join us, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension (of Rassilon) as we pick apart the Doctor’s latest return to his ancestral homeland for run-ins with high-ranking Time Lords, the introduction of exciting Time Ladies, and goodbyes to two beloved companions.

Join us as we talk about continuity errors, Tom Baker’s out-of-control ego, enormous amounts of jelly babies, mistreatment of K9, the Doctor’s enormous hypocrisy around time loops, the overuse of “DOC-TORRRR!” and the prospect of Borusa being played by Kenneth Williams. Naturally, Julie returns to old habits, talking about chairs, while the ending leaves Reilly devastated.

28 Oct 2021Bonus Episode 14: The Devil Was Huge in the 70s (The Omen and The House That Dripped Blood)00:43:32

It’s a seasonal bonus episode of Watchers in the FEAR Dimension, as Reilly rallies the crew to discuss two classic horror films featuring stars from Doctor Who – The Omen (featuring Patrick Troughton) and the Amicus anthology The House That Dripped Blood (featuring Jon Pertwee and Peter Cushing).

Along the way, Julie plays true to type as “the musical one” and expresses a love for scores by Jerry Goldsmith, Don struggles to understand how so many men could fall in love with a non-so-attractive waxwork, Anthony talks about goofy-looking vampires, and Reilly does his best Cryptkeeper impression. The entire crew discuss whether Pertwee could ever be cast as a vampire in a non-comedic way.

If you would like to watch along with us, The Omen is available from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3EbmBBl), Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3pxryjF), and to stream in the US on AMC+ (http://www.amcplus.com) and in the UK on Disney+ (http://www.disneyplus.co.uk). 05 Jun 2022Episode 86: Absolute Rubeish (The Time Warrior)00:54:38

It’s a fresh start as we kick off Season 11 with Robert Holmes’ excellent The Time Warrior, in which we say “hello!” to both the legendary Sarah Jane Smith and the iconic monsters known as the Sontarans! Add into the mix some comedy Saxons, some pathetic Normans, and plenty of sci-fi elements, and we’re onto a winner. Maybe. You’ll have to listen to find out what we actually think of this one!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself amused by Lynx not knowing what a woman is, Don finds himself thinking of ways to add more suspense to the plot, Julie complains at the length of time it takes to get a woman on screen (9 mins and 34 seconds), and Reilly questions some of the directing. The entire crew find themselves once again questioning the Brigadier’s sanity.

If you would like to watch along with us, this serial is available for streaming at both Britbox US (https://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (https://www.britbox.co.uk). It can also be found on DVD from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3MlmM0q) and from Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3mvJ5Gt).

20 Feb 2022Bonus Episode 19: Waiting for Littmann (Big Finish - Operation: Hellfire)00:41:46

It’s our Season 9 Big Finish bonus episode, as Anthony and Julie are joined by Reilly for his first Big Finish experience with a tale featuring spycraft, Nazis, and the occult as we discuss Operation: Hellfire, from The Third Doctor Adventures, Volume 6.

Along the way, Julie gets frustrated at Jo’s inability to adequately go undercover, Reilly realizes that he’s a prime candidate for occult sacrifice, and Anthony once again expresses his distaste for the phrase “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.” All three of us have a robust discussion on how awful the Time Lords are, and particularly the one that appears in this story.

The end is nigh for the Second Doctor as the TARDIS crew arrive in what appears to be World War One, but not all is as it seems… Continuing our journey through all of Doctor Who, we discuss the first half of the absolute epic that is The War Games, as we start preparing to bid farewell to some familiar faces…

During the episode, Reilly finds himself disappointed by the fact that Doctor von Werr doesn’t make one last return, Anthony gets to use his history degrees, Don sets a new record in how quickly he derails the conversation, and Julie gets exasperated at everyone else’s constant digressions. The entire crew discusses the commentary that this story provides on the entire Troughton era.

16 Oct 2022Bonus Episode 22: Panda Salad Bar (The Abominable Snowmen Animation)00:29:27

It’s time for a surprise bonus episode drop! The entire gang is getting together to discuss the recent animation of Season 5’s The Abominable Snowmen. So many questions – have Big Finish Creative finally fixed the problem of super long arms? Will the Archer-style animation work with the Yeti? And will animation turn a tedious, padded story into anything other than a tedious, padded story?

Along the way, Don puts himself in the shoes of the real Yeti, Julie enthuses over the way the animation handled Padmasambhava (aka Panda Salad Bar), Anthony gets highly critical of how the Yeti are animated, and Reilly feels some nostalgia for the Loose Cannon reconstructions. The entire crew find themselves appreciating the character models of the Tibetan Monks.

08 Nov 2020Episode 45: Chonkers of the Himalayas (The Abominable Snowmen)00:50:55

Moving further into the show’s famous “base under siege” season, we discuss The Abominable Snowmen – a story in which a Lovecraftian disembodied intelligence utilizes some #THICC robot Yeti to carry out its nefarious plan for World domination!

Over the course of our discussion, Reilly praises the proactive role of Victoria in this story, Anthony expresses a desire for a TARDIS band, Julie declares her appreciation for the familial relationship between Jamie and Victoria, and Don talks about the complete lack of introspection on the part of the Monks. The whole crew find themselves debating the intricacies of how the relationship between the Yeti and their control spheres.

For those of you who want to watch this along with us, this story is mostly missing. 24 Apr 2022Episode 83: Terry Nation’s Greatest Hits (Planet of the Daleks)01:00:20

It’s Terry Nation’s Greatest Hits as we discuss Planet of the Daleks – a story where he appears to have put all of his favourite past plot points in a hat, drawn them out at random, and attempted to make a coherent story out of the results! Join us as we keep track of the TerryTropes and discuss, among other things, whether or not this makes for a good story.

Over the course of the episode, Reilly expresses the opinion that this is one of the most disgusting Doctor Who serials we’ve covered to date, Julie gets excited about woodwind, Anthony tries to argue that there is a reasonable (albeit poorly represented) connection with Frontier in Space, and Don digs out Terry Nation’s original titles for each individual episode. The entire cast discuss how frustrating Vaber’s general anger issues are.
