 All my appointments go in there. I live and die by my Google calendar. That's the only way I'll ever remember that I've got a phone call or a zoom call or a meeting with somebody, a personal appointment, even scope goes on there because it matters in my work life.

"How Luck happens" is one of my most favorite ones right now. It's is by Janice Kaplan and Barnaby Marsh. I am a firm believer in making your own luck.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

One of my biggest mistakes is once or before I let a customer pour all their drama on me instead of just refunding their money right away. You don't need the negativity and move on. 

If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?

I would say don't be afraid to try things and to fail. Because there are so many, what we call failures, things that don't work out the way you think, but often when you look back, life is a journey.

Stop running your to-do list out of your inbox.” She does not keep emails on her phone— “There’s no such thing as a brand photography emergency,” she says. Abby would rather her clients contact her via phone because, after all, no one gets paid to sort through emails. 

Consider Downloading the Freedom App.

Abby considers the “Freedom” app her #1 tool. It’s an app blocker that keeps Abby away from “any sites that I would go to out of boredom” and stops her from “spending time mindlessly scrolling.” You can set the duration of time you need to be distraction-free. Abby sets her block from 5 PM to 7 AM each day, as well as the whole weekend. 

Read Deep Work by Cal Newport.

Abby considers Deep Work by Cal Newport to be her favorite book. She’s “sent a copy of that book to more people than [she] could ever count.” Abby says this book isn’t just about getting more done but learning to get the right stuff done. 

Lessons from the Past:

She remembers how, in the past, her ego was tied to the successes of her business. “I wanted people to make a big deal out of me,” she says. “If you work in the service industry, that’s not really how service works.” Abby wanted to build a “personal brand” similar to celebrity status with clients and fellow professionals recognizing her name. 

If Abby could go back in time to speak to her 22-year-old self, she would say the words “good for her, not for you.” Abby wishes she knew that when other people succeed, they’re on their path. Her success does not have to look the same as anyone else’s, and what someone else needs may not be what Abby needs.

If someone told Abby they want to do what she does, she would tell them to learn as much about marketing as possible. She recommends following Julie Stoian, especially to learn about funnels. Abby also advises learning all you can about branding— “those two will drive the train.” For her, you can’t follow the same formula as you would in wedding photography for the best results.

Read The Goal By Eliyahu M. Goldratt Or—Even Better—Read The Four Hour Workweek By Tim Ferriss. In The Goal, Dave really liked an idea Goldratt purported in this book about “throughput versus output.” Dave resonated with the idea that it’s not about producing the most—it’s about actually getting a product, service, or message into the hands of the customer. That said, The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss will always be near and dear to Dave—and for good reason. He particularly loved the idea that he could live life on his own terms versus subscribing to a cookie-cutter lifestyle.

Learning From the Past

If Dave could go back in time, he’d stress to his younger self that it’s not worth being a cheapskate. While Dave never was a “frugal” sort, he would never live above his means—he would sit on his hard-earned cash. If he could go back in time, he’d also tell his younger self to not put it all in the bank but use a good amount of it to invest in his own growth—it could come in the form of hiring coaches, managers, or joining masterminds.

It doesn't mean ignore forever, but that mindset shift will change how you focus your day.

I have a love affair with Google tasks. So I use a Google calendar.

Basecamp isn't going to tell you what to do, but your calendar will. And so I have started taking my tasks for the day, my meetings, my reminders, everything, and it is on my calendar. Google tasks allow you to sync with all your devices, other people can add tasks.

"Made to Stick" was a business strategy book that impacted me, and "Overshoot," was written in the eighties, and it's all about how we build our civilizations in our society—thinking that we have limitless resources when we don't. It's causing a significant shift in my thinking about life.

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

Shifting what you're doing because you think something didn't work. I launched a course, and I think it doesn't perform as I expected. I changed my strategy, and it was the biggest mistake.

 If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?

 I would say figure out what you want and trust yourself. I have struggled with anxiety because I'm unwilling to let my intuition speak up.

Joe Jonas is the CEO of Onlinejobs.ph, a virtual assistant outsourcing site in the Philippines. After trying to hire local assistants, then one in India, then on Upwork, he finally found someone full time in the Philippines, and it changed his life. He found that when he went back to hire again, they didn’t give any variety to meet his needs. He decided to help himself. Rather than tracking and being an intermediary, they are a connection point. He likes that he’s helping people both as entrepreneurs and employees both. There is a membership fee, and they supply lots of resources to help explain how it works.

Did you ever think it would be this big? He found after he mentioned a guy he hired in his mastermind, lots of people started to ask him. After deciding to build the platform in 2009, he basically ignored it until 2013 and realized it was highly successful and decided to turn more of his focus that way.

What are some top tips for starting out? It’s like Indeed or Monster, it’s a job board. A lot of other groups are even trying to recruit from their board. He has 26 full time people who work for him. He searches by skills first This gives you a good idea of skill sets and pricing. If you find ones you like, reach out. Know that you will need to contact a lot of people because they won’t respond if they are employed somewhere else. Do not do a Skype interview first, you will lost lots of recruits. They are concerned you may not understand them and want to “save face”. Being very professional, they want to put their best foot forward. Ask lots of questions over several emails. It tells you how quick they respond or how thorough they are. After a few days building trust between you both, then you may want to do a Skype interview.

How do you pay your freelancers? After finding issues on other platforms, they built a pay platform. You can use Paypal as well, but keep in mind limits.

Why did you decide on the Philippines instead of other places? After some experience, he found that as a culture they are very honest, loyal if you treat them well. That means you have a long-term worker you can teach to do things you wouldn’t teach others. They are a hard-working culture and they are making good money, which is important when they are wanting a stable job.

What is your productivity tip? 

Does something work for you or not? You don’t know if you don’t try. At worst, it may cost a few hundred dollars hiring a VA and it doesn’t work, best case it changes everything.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Figure out going to the Philippines early. Realize that you can recreate more in your business when you can delegate more. Also build a business, not just a product.


Reverse Engineer Your Business or Side Hustle

He has full time workers rather than hourly because you are pushing yourself to make sure you are getting your money’s worth. It gives you the drive to work on your business to give them more tasks. Every decision is based on who will do the work. After taking a month long mini retirement, he realized he could either let it go and it wasn’t important, or someone else can do it and it frees up even more time for you.

Welcome to The Doctor Entrepreneur Podcast. My name is Dr. Glenn Vo.

The reason I desired to begin this podcast was because of a desire to build a connection. I want to bring you guests that inspire you and teach you how to become better professionals and people. 

As a practicing dentist, I desired to help my fellow dental professionals improve their practices. I started a group called Nifty Thrifty Dentists that aims to help dentists save money in their business. We have over 23,000 members as well as a website and podcast. I also own equity in multiple dental businesses and speak at many events on topics related to overhead management.

To reach more people and build greater connections, I started a group called Healthcare Entrepreneurs. This group is focused on the unique abilities and strengths we as healthcare professionals have to create side gigs and other revenue sources. 

In addition, I’ve written a best-selling book. 2612 Cherryhill Lane, a fiction novel. This was a long term goal I have had and am excited to see it come to fruition.

What is a productivity tip? What is a tool that they use? What is their favorite book and why? I’m also going to ask about their past. First off, what was your biggest mistake, and why? The final question will be: what advice would you give to your younger self?

The last section of the podcast will be a deconstruction of their side hustle. This is to learn how they created their business and give you ideas to help you as well.

  • Robyn is the CEO and Founder of The Technology Queen. Robyn has been the “go-to” tech guru for entrepreneurs for their virtual summits for nine years.

Robyn was once a big fan of Excel and Microsoft Word; she even remembers WordPerfect and Lotus's days. Nowadays, she uses Google Suite. Thanks to Google Suite, communicating with her clients is easier than ever. 

Read Expert Secrets by Russell Brunson.

Robyn firmly believes that this book is a classic everyone should know about. After reading it three or four years ago, she immediately told clients all about it while applying its lessons to fulfill their needs.

Learning From the Past

To Robyn: she often put herself first—instead of putting her clients first—and it worked to her detriment. 

It’s always easy to prioritize yourself and further your goals, and Robyn regrets doing this in the past. Your business's success depends on your client's success, and you can’t help your clients succeed if they come second.

If Robyn could speak to a younger version of herself, she’d tell her not to worry. She’d encourage her to keep working towards her goals because, in the end, she will make it. That’s why, if she met her younger self, Robyn would emphasize the importance of keeping her head up.

I would have told myself to take bigger risks because I think it also ties into what I just said about your passion because I feel like I wasn't passionate about what I did for the first seven years.

If you want to have any sort of copywriting content writing business, you have to be really, really good at writing. So invest in some training. Spend a ton of time reading books about copywriting and content writing and get really, really good at the craft.

Dr. Shawn Dill and Dr. Lacey Book are the owners of Black Diamond Club, Katana Enterpises, Chirosushi Media, The Art of Specific, Lead Cure, Summer Camp, as well as the Specific Chiropratic Centers.

Dr. Dill initially began his chiropractic career in Costa Rica and helped develop the laws regarding chiropractic care in the country.

He realized throughout his career that some of the best clinicians and providers are great at what they do, but may not embrace the entrepreneur aspect.

Dr. Lacey Book began working in multiple role within the chiropractic office before deciding to become a chiropractor herself. She realized that many health care providers are handcuffed to their positions in that they cannot step away from their business to gain time and freedom.

What do you encourage female entrepreneurs? We overuse the concept of balance and it’s not realistic. There may be time when you need to devote more time to one or another. In the long run you can have balance long term, but it may not be an even split each day. Don’t be afraid to stop and ask for help.

Why is it important to look beyond your own industry? The banking industry started the concept of a drive through, but the fast food industry picked it up and found it to be even more applicable to their own industry. This same concept is important to all entrepreneurs.

Why is it good to work with a coach or mastermind program? It comes down to leverage. It allows us to get to our destination more quickly than we would on our own. Waiting to hire a coach until you are ready means it will never happen, otherwise you’d be doing it already. Just move forward.

Why is community important for entrepreneurs? People want to feel connected. It is integral to growth of yourself and others. Serving others within your community allows you to connect even more.

Shaun: Work in sprints. Focus is much easier to do in smaller chunks. Break down your projects into smaller tasks all the way to your 30 minute sprints.

Your first hire should be an executive assistant. A lot of your time is spent on lower value tasks. Freeing those tasks gives you time to address higher value tasks.

Have an “unwinding routine.” For David, his “tomorrow” starts today. You’ll spend a third of your life sleeping, after all, and most people go to bed only to wake up more tired the next morning. They’ll then wonder why they lack productivity.

A tool that has helped him as an Entrepreneur.

Become a “student of your calendar.” By that, David means you ought to pay attention and give your “five levels of intention.” As an entrepreneur, you can beat people with math if you understand time. Start by taking the activities you have planned and the activities you don’t have planned. Then take the activities you do get paid for and the activities you don’t get paid for.

Read Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill. David reads this classic on a daily basis. Why? First, it’s bifocal of why human nature never changes: the 500 most successful people in the world weren’t so different than you, Dave, or Glenn. Secondly, David sees himself as a more modern Napolean Hill. While Mr. Hill was able to interview 500 people over the course of his life about how they became financially successful, David is able to interview 20-25 people on a daily basis about how they become successful in their respective industries… And, on that note, David was blessed to be in the movie Think and Grow Rich: The Legacy as well as being featured in the book itself.

Learning From the Past

A significant mistake and what he learned from it.

Believe it or not, one of David’s biggest mistakes was misunderstanding how mistakes work. He thought that mistakes, failures, and setbacks aren’t “protection and promotion” or opportunities to learn but, rather, are forms of punishment.

Likewise, we feel like we’re being punished when we don’t get the job we want or get into the school we want or the relationship we want. But if we look at it omnisciently, all things may very well happen for a reason.

If you could talk to your younger self for one minute, what would you say? 

Whether that younger version is 14, 24, or 34 years old—he’d tell him to ask for help. People limit themselves when they don’t ask for help.

I tend to default to knowledge as security. Whenever I'm feeling anxious, I'll see a course and buy it. I'll feel insecure about my business, but I think I should have trusted myself and noticed that I had everything I needed to succeed without looking for more. Because there's so much out there, you could take courses all day and never stop. And I get to this realization that instead of spending money for more knowledge, you should be spending on the people who can do it for you much faster and much better. You don't have to learn how to do it. You also need to learn how to do everything right.

  1. You’re Not an “Air Conditioner Repairman.”
  2. Colleen likes to tell her students that they aren’t “air conditioning repair people.” Let’s say you have an on-ground store—retail, accounting, etc.—and the air conditioning goes out. Do you then shut down for six months and go to air conditioning repair school so you can learn how to fix it? Likely not. So, don’t do the same for your online business!
  3. We’re not experts on everything. Focus on what you do best and outsource the rest. You’ll move so much faster and you’ll make money much sooner. If you slow yourself down by trying to wear all the hats, you’ll inhibit your growth.
  4. Get Coaching.
  5. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel: get a mentor and listen to them. But it’s important to find the right fit for you; there are a lot of coaches out there. Do your due diligence by making sure your potential coach has a personality that resonates with you and that they’re credible. 
  6. If coaching sounds out of your budget or like an investment you’re not keen on making, that makes sense. During the early phases of a business, there’s not much money coming in but a lot of money going out—but that doesn’t mean you should forgo coaching. In that case, Colleen advises that you start committing a lot of time to get into Facebook groups (or wherever else you’re comfortable going). 
  7. Read anything written by Jen Sincero.
  8. Colleen is a huge fan of anything written by Jen Sincero whether it’s You are a Bad Ass at Making Money, Bad Ass Habits, and so on. Like Colleen, Jen belongs to the Typewriter generation as someone who is also in her fifties. 
  9. On one hand, Jen writes all about self-responsibility—something Colleen had to learn the hard way. Running your own business takes a lot of self-discipline—nobody is there to make sure you’re sitting at your desk or meeting deadlines.  
  10. Likewise, Colleen likes how Jen writes about prioritizing what it is that you really want. So many aspiring entrepreneurs claim they don't’ have time, but we all have the same 24 hours in a day. The only difference is what we’re prioritizing and how we’re spending our time. 


Learning From the Past

Colleen was one of those people who wanted to take the DIY approach with everything. In other words, she had a problem trying to be the “Air Conditioning Repairman” mentioned in the last section. Subsequently, it took about two years before Colleen was able to actually make money and launch a product. She wasted hours learning about stuff she could’ve outsourced. Much of her effort was spent doing things she didn’t wanna do, which meant she was being taken away from the parts of running her business that she really enjoyed doing. 

If Colleen could talk to her younger self and shed some advice, she’d tell herself to jump right in—to “get things done rather than get things perfect.” And, on that note, she’d also tell herself that she shouldn’t waste her time doing anything she doesn’t love doing.

Pour into your team, and they will pour into your customers, clients, or community.

 LEARNING FROM THE PAST

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from.

A lot, I love to refer to them as lessons learned. Every single thing that I've done that didn't work out or didn't go the way I wanted or planned. You know, make a mistake, but learn or get something from it as I said, my journey of learning to code and finally starting a business and finally finding clients that didn't happen in a snap. So, because I was afraid of doing something wrong or it not being right, that's why.

If someone walks up to you like a younger version of you and wants to do what you do, how are you going to explain it?

I would start with two things, learn a skill, whatever that is, that can be turned into a service that you can offer, and then find a communal. If those two things are combined, you're unstoppable. And if other people want to learn that too, start teaching it. I'm a big believer in leading with value, giveaway advice, be to an extent, just be the person that is helpful and kind. That goes the extra mile because people will remember that. And if you want to create a movement, the community creating your own, a community that people are proud of being a part of that they feel like part of a tribe. Spend lots and lots and lots of time with them.

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

 The one thing I wish got over quicker is the need to learn everything. I'm not going to do something until I know this or this debilitating thought that I need to know everything. There's no such thing as an expert because it's an evolving thing.

 If you went back in time and you ran into your younger version, what would you tell her?

 Chill out, don't worry so much! It's all going to work out. 

 If someone wants to do what you do. How would reverse engineer what you're doing in one minute?

Invest in your skills and learn the craft. Importantly get a copy coach, who can copy chief your work. Have them go through your things, so you're not stumbling. Then start getting clients. So, if you learn how to write a homepage for your website, get a client who wants to have a homepage written, give results, and give outstanding white-glove service. Stop buying courses, stop consuming content and start creating your own.

Utilize Audiobooks to Multitask.

As a faith-based entrepreneur, Eric often feels like he needs to be studying God’s word but he doesn’t know what to do. Maybe you’ve run into similar problems, pledging to read the Bible this year only to get to Leviticus and find yourself too bored to read the whole thing. The minute Eric gave up the idea that he could only consume the Bible by reading it was a very freeing moment for him. He’s learned that listening to audio tapes of the Bible as he works out is a great way to knock out two birds with one stone. Some people might think that this makes it difficult to listen to everything in great detail but, in Eric’s opinion, the same goes when he’s reading—he often feels distractible and as though reading doesn’t leave him feeling fully connected. 

Learning From the Past

Anyone who is successful and has made breakthroughs has also gone through very painful experiences. And, by studying the mistakes of others, we can hopefully avoid following in those same footsteps—which is the point of this segment. 

So, how can we learn from Eric’s past? If you tune in or read the corresponding blog post, you’ll hear about a season of Eric’s life when he was chasing lots of wealth and his relationships weren’t as healthy as he wanted them to be. Worst of all, he was so unhappy with his relationship with his wife that he had an affair. This was 24 or 25 years ago, and it taught Eric a lot. Likewise, the lessons he learned can be relevant to us as well.

If Eric could offer a younger version of himself some advice, he’d tell him, “Trust the setbacks, because the setback is the setup.” If he could go back in time, he’d change absolutely nothing. Eric is content where he is right now, but he knows he wouldn’t be where he is now without the dark seasons. The good, the bad, and the ugly are what brought him to where he currently is. So, if he could talk to the young Eric, he’d tell him to buckle up and learn as many lessons as he can when the challenges inevitably come.

If you’re aspiring to be like Eric, he has a piece of advice: “If it’s not broken, then break it.” In Eric’s opinion, the entire finance industry is based on the philosophy of either fear or greed. It’s between scaring someone to buy something or giving them the fear of missing out (otherwise known as “FOMO”) so they become convinced to buy something out of greed. Everyone is thus forced into a mindset of scarcity, fearing that they’re missing out on something.

What is your productivity tip? 

Batching like tasks together can make you much more productive. Grouping all writing, emails, phone calls, etc. together and setting a designated time to accomplish them keeps you from wasting time jumping from task to task.

 

Share a tool that has helped you as an Entrepreneur.

The app “Things” is a fantastic to-do list that helps him not forget tasks. There are tasks with subtasks and checklists to break it down. He also likes the “Someday” tab to help think of ideas he’d like to visit in the future.

What is your favorite business book? 

His favorite book is “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. He did a five-year study of companies that were good and those that truly excelled and compared companies in the same or similar industries. By comparing them, we can see what strategies by design allowed them to go from good to great.


LEARNING FROM THE PAST:

What’s a mistake that you made that you learned a good lesson? 

Believing that where I went to school was overly important. After applying to the schools I wanted, it came down to money, and I found myself at my backup school. What I learned from that is that the school has very little to do with my education and has much more to do with me and how I use the opportunity. That was very freeing because when he went on to med school and residency he struggled with that bit and learned that he still got a phenomenal education. Thinking that you need to be at a certain place may cause you to miss out on what is right for you.

 

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell myself as a junior in high school to stop thinking about the next thing, or the next achievement and start looking at the bigger picture. Were you good to the people around you? Were you a good father, husband, friend, person? Do you have high moral character? Would you want to be your friend? In the grand scheme, everything else just doesn’t matter much.

The other digital would be Otter like you send yourself a voice note or what you're thinking about. When you can't really type, it will remind you of things and ideas you need to remember.

Atomic Habits to Classic, the reason is I love everything. It really gets you to understand, like what makes success, what gets you to change? What is a habit, and how to kind of go about it? There are so many great books out there, but for me, the books that really resonate are the ones where you actually can take something, like an actionable step.

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

I wish I had encouraged my kids to make more mistakes because, like we live in this perfectionist world, or at least I, I mentally am always like, no, we want to get it right—all these standards. And like the idea that. Failure is much more of a learning tool

If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?

No matter where they are, whether they're an entrepreneur, a dentist, or a doctor where they have like 50 practices or one they're successful, everyone is successful on some level. We've all kind of bet on ourselves, but I would go back and tell myself my younger self two key things. Number one, bet on yourself, hard,

 What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

I bought a house when I was 22 instead of saving up because I was still with my parents. I didn't think that you should have savings. So anyway, the biggest mistake to summarize is sticking to the plan when you're the best thing and when your intuition is telling you to pivot and kind of being locked into; this is what I want to do.

 If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?

Trust your gut, your intuition, like that nudging that you feel of, like, this doesn't feel right. Or I really want to do this, even though everybody else says this is the right way. Like follow your gut, trust your intuition. I believe it's always leading you the right way, and don't worry about pleasing others.

 What if someone came up to you and said I want to do what you do. How will you reverse engineer your business? Or how are you going to explain it?

So if they want to be a, you know, a financial and lifestyle coach, I would just say one phase, understand the world of finance. So you can be good at what you do understand personal development.

The Every Man Entrepreneur, Dr. Henry Ernst, went to the University of Alabama for Undergrad and was an athletic trainer for the football team for 3 years. He went to dental school at Nova Southeastern and practiced in south Florida for a few years before moving to North Carolina and starting a practice. After working through 2008, he vowed to be ready for the next recession. He opened Pleasant Plains Dental in November 2014 and now has 14 chairs, 4 doctors, and 30 employees.

I’ve always found you to be very coachable and willing to learn. Why is having an ego a detriment? It’s very common because they are very smart and went through school, but many seem to be poor business owners. Everyone needs a coach and to fight becoming complacent. 

When someone says they want to figure these things out on their own, I want to ask how much it really cost them. Instead, vet someone you believe in and use what they know and be open to learning.

What is your productivity tip? 

The Best Self Book focuses on mentality. You should be able to accomplish a lot in 90 days. Every day you need to do something small as a minimum step to accomplish your goal. Each book is designed for 90 days.

I don’t know if it classifies as a tool, but the EOS system has been very effective. It builds traction and makes things less stressful and more easily replicable. There are also coaches that can help teach you this approach and call you out. You become the last line of defense instead of the first. 

What is your favorite business book? 

“Good to Great” has so much good material that he has used. “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” is a great one for mindset when it comes to money. “The Cashflow Game” is a great tool to teach yourself and your family. My practice operates by core values. If you don’t fulfill those values, you shouldn’t stay.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST:

What’s a mistake that you made that you learned a good lesson? 

Never get complacent, always have a startup mentality. When our practice was growing, I had two associates and I got complacent and stopped auditing. I ignored a bad review or two as well as staff complaints. I had to lay her off and found myself having to pick up all of the slack on top of my current schedule. I also found I had to redo about 25 crowns that were poorly done by her for free during that time as well. Check in with your staff on issues, look at your reports and use EOS to prevent a disaster.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Find your teenage self and give them the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” series and find good mentors. Find your why, and don’t listen to the media. Participate in Mastermind groups and hang out with winners and good people. If you don’t find what will make you happy, you will be miserable. 

Reverse Engineer Your Business or Side Hustle

Start by building your primary business to it’s best first. Get a coach and maximize it to leverage to other things. Once you get that, you can look to invest in things you understand. I don’t keep anything in the stock market because I don’t understand it well. I look for recession resistant things like lending, storage facilities, and affordable housing options. Use what you can to lower your taxes as well. Figure out how much you need each month and figure out how much you need to invest to make it happen. What’s the shortcut to what you do? Find a group, such as Same Page Mastermind or High Speed Alliance. Most of the people in these groups are made of dentists and other healthcare professionals. It’s not about the deal so much as who you are doing the deal with that will guide your success. Being in a mastermind group puts you in those circles already. It will save you so much time and money.

Learning From the Past

To Carrie, not all money is good money—not every client is ideal for you, your business, and your team. While Carrie wishes this mistake was a one-and-done, she learned this lesson (the hard way) multiple times in business—she believes this mistake is especially easy to make as a service provider.

If Carrie could talk to the younger version of herself, she’d tell her that she was enough just as she is. She never felt like she quite had “it” or that she was enough. That’s how she ended up getting a Master’s Degree, chasing more certifications, and trying to prove herself in some way.

The time you spend winding down, binging on Netflix, or scrolling through your phone is a waste of energy in Robin's eyes. Many people misguage how much sleep and hours they need and put in. Resting isn’t just a matter of maintaining your performance, but also maintaining your health. 
  3. Track Your Time.
  4. As a paralegal when she was required to keep track of her time to get paid. This helped her to realize we often think tasks will take less time than they do. It can be super helpful, Robin says, if you track the time it takes you to do something for a week. It will tell you so much about how you are spending your time and save you more in the long run.
  5. Read The Fire Starter Sessions: A Soulful + Practical Guide to Creating Success on Your Own Terms by Danielle LaPorte.
  6. Robin had a copy of it in her hands. It was filled with hundreds of post-it notes—a testimony to how much this book has helped her. 

Learning From the Past.

Robin regretted when she didn’t listen to her gut when working with somebody. She made excuses not to trust her gut, thinking she knew better. Then, once this led her to a mistake, she’d compound the error by trying to patch things up and make it all work out. 

If Robin could go talk to a younger version of herself—back when she was listening to the Smiths, the Cure, or the Psychedelic Furs with an “asymmetrical haircut”—she’d tell her not to be afraid to lose. You’re younger and scared of looking “dumb” in front of other people. When you get older, you look back on those moments and realize that they weren’t as big of a deal as we thought them to be.

Veena Jetti is a real estate investor and a founding member of Enzo Brands which focuses on multifamily. She comes from both a family and corporate real estate background. When thinking of worst case scenarios when talking to investors, she never really knew what everything coming to a halt looked like until COVID-19 closures.

To prepare, they started looking a while back at the strategies to help both paying bills as well as helping people pay their rents. Their assets were lined up early to prepare for a downturn, but overall planned for a long term view. This is not a problem that will resolve itself in the next few weeks, and we don’t know if this is a dip or something more major. Putting things in place helps to work with your tenants now will be more beneficial later. Lease loans or applying a security deposit toward payments is a good option to help. 

What’s your advice to people looking to invest right now? Some people really want to jump in and invest in real estate rather than the stock market. Others are hesitant because of the unsure outcomes. Take time to learn about the investments you are interested in and find your risk level. Find operators in your areas that can allow you to make passive investment options. 

Make sure that you are a good fit with your investment group. Enzo builds a relationship with an intake call and time to gauge your interest and make a decision from there. They actually have an overage in investors, which is a great compliment to them.

How should we vet an investment group? There are lots of great groups out there. Take a look at their projects, track record or person with experience in this particular investment. Ask if they are investing in the deal themselves. Is there aligned capital? It is typically 2-4%, but Enzo will often invest closer to 6%. You want them to have skin in the game. Also find out who is signing the loan, the KP or Key Principle. The signers have to have a net worth equal to or greater than the loan. Is anyone getting a payout as part of signing.

What is your productivity tip? 

Find partners that are smarter than you. She has someone who is great at financials and another that is excellent at marketing. Finding a support team that is effective makes your life so much easier as well.

For project management, she really likes to use Slack as an easy communication tool. Adding different channels keeps things sorted and organized. 

What is your favorite business book? 

The Millionaire Next Door, old school edition. As well as Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

What’s a mistake that you made that you learned a good lesson? 

I chose a partner that was not a good fit. It was very tumultuous and there was a lot of internal and external struggle that made it difficult. Learning how to work through that made her better at picking partners and learning to compromise.


What advice would you give to your younger self? In your early 20’s, what would you tell her? While I would say go straight to multifamily investing. If she had actually done that, she would have tried to acquire more and be much more aggressive. Keep in mind your experience and income level, but go big or go home.

Have you ever thought about doing something more on the educational side? You are a wealth of information. It would take a lot of time and bandwidth she doesn’t have at this time. She does want to be a resource for people, but it would be more in the vein of paying it forward. She is always willing to help evaluate a deal.

Dr. Peter Kim is from Passive Income MD and an anesthesiologist. After getting his dream job at his dream location and then having his hours cut, he began to understand why so many physicians feel frustrated and boxed in. After being hesitant to move forward, he finally decided to write 10 blog posts to begin and found that it gained traction. He now gives that portion for free. He learned that creating it allowed for some additional income and build the kind of life he wanted. After asking his parents what time of their life was happiest, they mentioned when their children were young. He realized he didn’t want to miss out on those moments with his own children.

The current situation has shown that no one’s job is truly safe. Everyone’s businesses can be hurt, so diversifying your income streams can help secure your future.

What are the kinds of real estate deals you work? He tried a bit of everything, and he encourages you to find what you like. He has done group funding, capital building, as well as directly owning single-family and multifamily properties. He started with a crowdfunding group and also feels that diversifying locations for real estate is important as well. His first investment he was very nervous because it felt outside of his realm, but he became more comfortable with time.

Chris Miles is the anti- financial advisor. After being a financial planner for 4 years, he realized that what we have been taught was wrong. He started analyzing numbers and realized they didn’t add up. Now he focuses on alternative investments. When he put in real numbers, he realized the S&P is only getting about 7%. Even trying to adjust for inflation means you are not making much money on what may be your primary investment strategy.

He works more as a consultant, advisor and connector. Using alternative investments to create cashflow from your money is more beneficial.

He finds that doctors are inundated with people who want to manage their money, but they all really do the same thing. Doctors feel that if an advisor is gambling their money, they might as well handle it themselves so at least they have themselves to blame.

What would it take to live on $60,000 per year only investing in the stockmarket if you want to retire in 20 years? You’ll need to save over $8300 per month! Financial advisor can finesse the numbers to make it look like you will have 4 times the money you would actually have.

As an example, he purchased a rental property in Memphis two years ago, and it is returning about $320 per month after putting down $32,000. That’s 1% per month or 12% per year as a cash on cash return. He’s had the same renter, made $7,000 in cash flow, $3000 paid down on his mortgage, and has not paid taxes on it due to depreciation. Adding in the $17,000 increase in value, he’s made $27,000 on $32,000 in only 2 years.

So why do people keep doing the same old things? It’s herd mentality. Finance is big business and the spend a lot to get you to believe in its success.

A morning ritual of drinking water, working out, pray, meditate, read scriptures or learn. You could do some of it while commuting. It sets the day right.

Share a tool that has helped you as an Entrepreneur.

Look at quickbooks for your business a few times a month. On a personal level, Mint is a great and simple tool to track your money.

What is your favorite business book? 

The Holy Scriptures are number one, but “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” is a great one as well. “The Pumpkin Plan” by Mike Michalowicz is a definite must-read. Using those principles allowed him to 10X his profits.

LEARNING FROM THE PAST:

What’s a mistake that you made that you learned a good lesson? 

The divorce was an obvious one, but he has actually retired twice now. That’s not a good thing. In a business partnership, his partner told him to focus on what they were doing and dump all of his multiple streams of income. He did that just before 2008. The real estate business was going down and he wasn’t tracking his money. When he finally sat down to look, he realized he was overspending by $16,000 per month and had gone from millionaire to upside-down millionaire. Had to foreclose on his house a week before his fourth child was born. He was the one who was supposed to know how to handle money. He decided to focus on helping people find money. By 2016 he was out of debt and able to retire again. He felt like he lacked integrity because he was trying to teach people how to do something when he failed.

With what is happening now, he says attitude and gratitude are essential to surviving and thriving during a struggle. 

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Listen to your gut. Even if someone else says something, if it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Know that it will get better.

  • Let’s welcome Nicole McDonough for this week’s episode of the Doctor Entrepreneur Podcast. Nicole is a life coach, super mom, Enneagram expert, and an all-around fantastic person. 
  • You may be unfamiliar with what an Enneagram test even is, let alone what it can do. In Nicole’s words, an Enneagram is a map that helps us plot our “unique starting point.” It tells us about our motivations, beliefs, values, etc. that form when we’re young.
  • Most people get their Enneagram results and need a “translator” like Nicole who can help listen on a deeper level; people like Nicole bring out what they’re feeling and help validate these emotions as well as identify ways to honor them.

“Big Entrepreneur 3”

  1. Take Everything Everybody Says with a Grain of Salt; Figure Out What Works Best for You.
  2. Recently, Nicole read something about the “workhorses” vs. the “thoroughbreds” within the entrepreneur “breed.” 
  3. For workhorses, their superpower is in their steadiness—they work a little bit each day and consistently make progress. 
  4. Thoroughbreds, on the other hand, operate in between two modes: sprints and rests. 
  5. It does neither type any good to look at the other and wish they had those qualities—they’re different breeds. 
  6. As an Enneagram Four, Nicole deems herself a thoroughbred. Unfortunately, most of her earlier productivity was advised by workhorses. It was driving her to the ground; she was losing both her inspiration and connection to her natural rhythm. 
  7. Take Yourself on “Artist Field Trips.”
  8. Nicole believes many entrepreneurs discount themselves by believing they aren’t artists—everyone has creativity. You might not be Pablo Picasso, but every entrepreneur is creative in some aspects. 
  9. Read “Helping People Change” by Richard Boyatzis and/or “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni.
  10. Thanks to her academic background, Nicole found the first book—“Helping People Change” by Richard Boyatzis —through the Harvard Business Review. This book was what introduced Nicole to coaching, and one of the most powerful things she took away from it was the concept of “Self-Mastery.” 
  11. The second book recommendation—“The Five Dysfunctions of a Team” by Patrick Lencioni—is a book that’s on Glenn’s list. 

Learning From the Past

People often think life is like a line with an arc: you start here and you go there in between the stages of development with a beginning, middle, and end. One of the most powerful things Nicole has been taught is that life is not a point—it’s not linear, it’s not A to B—it’s a labyrinth. In a labyrinth, you’re going around and experiencing seasons, cycles, and deja vu. 

The goal is not to move through issues and be done with them for good. The goal is to prepare yourself so that when you come back to those issues again, you have more tools to navigate them than you did the last time around. This sort of mindset removes the pressure; there’s no arrival, point B, or end-game. It’s all about building your repertoire and becoming a stronger version of yourself.

Chris Krimitsos is the founder of Podfest.

He started with podcasts because he’s always been interested in content. He had done two TV shows previously as well as some radio. He and his wife both have podcasts. He’s very passionate about allowing people to connect via audio.


What was your motivation for Podfest?

He enjoys working with content creators and feels he has a gift for supporting others in their talent. It brings his life lots of meaning to help others.


How did you start the event?

In the beginning, it was difficult to podcast because tools and equipment weren’t readily available.

After bringing business groups together the word spread. They started will 110 attendees and it has grown to over 1800 people attending. They have an official documentary about podcasting called, “The Messengers”.

Community tips: Listen to your community feedback and do what will help the most people in your group. One example is their “Pay it Forward” program by buying a ticket for someone who could use the help.

They also did a closing keynote of the audience sharing what they are grateful for.

He finds that the community and connection have brought results he could never expect.


How has creating Podfest changed your business and yourself as a person?

It’s a lot of work and effort to keep it an incredibly positive environment. He feels so grateful to be able to give back. Finding positive people and team members creates enormous success because they are invested in the mission. While temps may be more cost-effective, volunteers are invested in the mission and process.

If you could go back in time, what tips would you give your younger self?

Start ugly faster. Don’t worry about perfection, experiment with processes. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and risks. Learn and grow every day. Being afraid leaves us stuck only where we feel comfortable.

High achievers blame perfectionism, others blame fear.

The ultimate failure is thinking about something and never doing it. If you find you don’t like something, stop.


What are some tips you have for making themselves an influencer in their industry?

Be clear on your intent. Your why needs to become bigger than your how. Make yourself an E-connector to become the go-to person to make connections. At an event, host a small dinner. State the intent and who you are. Have each person do a 10-second introduction. Use that information to help connect people. Connecting two people sets the tone and relaxes people to open up. Innovative opportunities will come your way. You become the person that gets information before your peers. Use it to grow your business and help people.


What is advice you’d give for starting a podcast?

We will ignore celebrity built podcasts. If you are knowledgeable, search your topic in podcasts and see what’s out there. Look at keywords to use to cue listeners. Don’t be concerned if there are multiple podcasts on the topic. Find a way that makes you unique and get to know the other hosts because they will be your guests.


If you are busy, try to release regularly. Batch record a season and release them at once. Hire an editor to make it sound as good as possible.

It's strange that you should say business and philosophy because philosophy gets you thinking and business books can get you acting. So, I would say if I had to try and combine those two, “Anything” by Dr. Seuss but probably “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” But a good business book is Ryan Holiday’s “Trust Me, I'm Lying.”

What's one of your more significant mistakes? But a mistake that you learned from. 

Be real to yourself! Years ago, I worked events for Ferrari. Even though I had been known to wear a specific attire, I decided to change it up one time at a massive party where I got a contract to work. I shaved. I took my earrings out. I put on my suit. I bought a Ferrari. I went to the party and someone took a photograph of me. And when I got that photograph, I was shocked at what I saw. I realized that wasn’t me. So from then on, I realized that I had to be real to myself and be who I am, not some ideal version of what people expect me to be. Don’t be a sellout!

What if someone came up to you and said I want to do what you do. How will you reverse engineer your business? Or how are you going to explain it?

First, I’ll ask them what is that I do and why do you want to do it. Because a lot of people think my job is so glamorous and that I get to hang out with celebrities. Yes, my job is to get my clients to want they want. But I do it because my job is to make my client happy.

Why is it so important to get the face-to-face to work on that relationship in this day and age of technology and convenience?

People now have a short attention span and it has only gotten shorter. It’s graded now in milliseconds. Before TikTok, there were Vines where you had seconds to grab the viewer’s attention. But you haven’t got six seconds now. You’re lucky if you’ve got two! Bottom line, everyone has got a short attention span. And nothing will take the place of actually showing up and meeting face to face. It allows the client to measure you up and see your enthusiasm, your dedication, and other qualities that you just can’t get via a text or email.
