One of the biggest stressors for parents with every new baby is feeding. This is one that is probably equally stressful each time you bring home a new baby. Commonly, dads feel uncomfortable trying to help with breastfeeding, but there are lots of ways dads can support their partners in successful feeding. We are excited to welcome Dr. Laurie Jones (@doctordrmilk and www.drmilk.org) who has been supporting nursing moms for over twenty years as a primary care pediatrician. 03 Mar 2022 | 16. A Case for Seasons: How to Get "Un-Stuck" in Tough Times | 00:24:09
WELCOME BACK TO THE DOCS2DADS PODCAST. FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA HERE!! ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO GROW THE SHOW AND HELP MORE DADS DISCOVER OUR COMMUNITY IS TO LEAVE A FIVE STAR REVIEW FOR OUR PODCAST WHERE YOU CAN ASK A QUESTION THAT I CAN ANSWER ON THE SHOW LIKE THIS ONE: HI DR. SCOTT, THE TODDLER YEARS CAN BE VERY NEGATIVE AND PARENTS CAN FIND THEMSELVES SAYING ‘NO’ LIKE 100 TIMES A DAY AND THAT IS WHERE I AM RIGHT NOW. HOW CAN I GET TO A PLACE WHERE I DON’T HAVE TO SAY NO SO OFTEN? IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY INTERACTION I HAVE WITH MY CHILD IS NEGATIVE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS QUESTION. THIS IS A VERY COMMON CHALLENGE FOR PARENTS AND I WOULD SAY THAT THERE ARE THREE MAIN CATEGORIES OF ‘NO’S AND GETTING FAMILIAR WITH HOW OFTEN YOU USE EACH KIND CAN BE USEFUL. I CATEGORIZE THEM AS SAFETY NO’S PRACTICAL NO’S AND ANNOYED NO’S. WORK TO CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR POSITIVE INTERACTIONS. SPENDING TIME TOGETHER BUILDING SOMETHING, WHERE THEY CAN’T DO IT “WRONG” AND THEY CAN BE CREATIVE AND EXPLORE. IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION THAT YOU WANT ANSWERED ON THE SHOW, PLEASE REACH OUT VIA SOCIAL MEDIA OR SEND US AN EMAIL AT DOCS2DADSPOD@GMAIL.COM. WE’D LOVE TO HEAR YOUR QUESTION AND HELP OTHER DADS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH THE SAME ISSUES. THERE’S SOMETHING THAT’S BEEN ON MY HEART LATELY THAT I HOPE WILL HELP SOME OF YOU WHO ARE GOING THROUGH A TOUGH SEASON. PEOPLE IN THE MIDWEST TALK ABOUT THE SEASONS AS SOMETHING THEY LOVE ABOUT LIVING HERE. I DIDN'T REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT AFTER MOVING FROM PHOENIX WHERE WHAT WE LOVED WAS SUNSHINE!! BUT I HAVE DEVELOPED A SENSE OF WHY THEY LOVE SEASONS. NOT THAT EACH ONE IS GREAT, BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN LIFE IS TOUGH AND THIS HELPS YOU APPRECIATE THE GOOD TIMES MORE. I KNOW A LOT OF MY FELLOW DADS ARE GOING THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES RIGHT NOW AND I JUST WANT TO OFFER SOME ENCOURAGEMENT. MANY TIMES, DADS IN PARTICULAR FEEL THE NEED TO “TOUGH IT OUT” OR “GO IT ALONE” DURING CHALLENGING SEASONS. BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN WE NEED HELP. WE SHOULD SEEK ADVICE FROM PEOPLE WHO WE TRUST. SOMETIMES THESE SEASONS CORRELATE WITH CHALLENGES WITH FEEDING OR SLEEPING AND THEY CAN FEEL LIKE FOREVER: EVERY MEAL, EVERY NAP CAN TURN INTO AN EXPLOSION. APPROACH THESE CHALLENGES USING TEAMWORK. FINALLY, TRY SHAKING UP THE ROUTINE. DO DAILY CHECK-INS WITH YOURSELF TO DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED TO CARE FOR YOURSELF SO YOU CAN SHOW UP FOR YOUR FAMILY. DO YOU NEED MORE SLEEP? EXERCISE? PRAYER AND MEDITATION? ALL OF THE ABOVE? ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES COMES FROM ST. FRANCIS DE SALES "EVERYONE NEEDS HALF AN HOUR OF PRAYER EACH DAY UNLESS THEY ARE BUSY - THEN THEY NEED AN HOUR." IT IS WHEN WE LEAST HAVE TIME FOR SELF-CARE THAT WE MUST FIND A WAY TO MAKE TIME FOR IT. WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER TO PROTECT TIME FOR ONE ANOTHER. MAYBE YOU NEED A DATE NIGHT TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER. MAKE A DAILY HABIT OF GRATITUDE AROUND YOUR PARTNER AND KIDS. SOME OF MY FAVORITE CONVERSATIONS WITH MY WIFE ARE SHARING FUNNY STORIES ABOUT THINGS OUR KIDS DID THAT MADE US SMILE. IT CAN REALLY PULL ME OUT OF A RUT.

10 Mar 2022 | 17. Talking With Kids When Scary Things Happen ft. Dr. Lia Gaggino | 00:38:55
Welcome back dads!! This week we are continuing our detour from your regularly scheduled programming because there has been such chaos in the world and I know a lot of parents are struggling to figure out how to talk to their kids about what is going on and I wanted to try to help. So I reached out to a new friend of mine who is another podcasting pediatrician who had a great episode on this topic when those of us in Michigan were shaken by a school shooting in Oxford, MI that you may have seen on the national news. I’m very grateful to Dr. Lia Gaggino for making time last minute to get together to record with me so we can get this out to you as soon as possible and try to help in some small way. Dr. Lia Gaggino (IG: @pediatricmeltdown, Twitter: @gagginol) is a primary care pediatrician practicing on the west side of Michigan for over 30 years. From 2015 to 2020, she served as the Kalamazoo-based Bronson Healthcare System medical director of behavioral health implementing Zero Suicide practices and building integrated behavioral health in primary care. Dr. Gaggino is the founder of Medical Behavioral Health Solutions, LLC offering support to clinicians and systems and the host of the pediatric meltdown podcast featuring experts on children’s emotional well-being. She currently sits on the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) board of directors, partners closely with the Michigan chapter of the AAP and is a consultant to the University of Michigan MC3 Child Psychiatry Access Program. Here are a couple key takeaways from my conversation with Dr. Gaggino.
These conversations are never easy, but your kids will probably have questions, so knowing where reliable sources of information are when it comes to child health, like healthychildren.org from the American Academy of Pediatrics Have a question about this or other topics? 17 Mar 2022 | 18. Maximizing Value from Primary Care Visits | 00:35:41
Today, we talk about what to expect from your visits with the pediatrician in the first 6-8 weeks of your baby’s life. we talked back in episode 8 about how to go about choosing a pediatrician, so if you are still struggling with that decision, please go back and listen to that episode. You will typically have a visit at 3-5 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months to get started. There are a few things you should expect to happen at each visit with your primary care pediatrician or other provider. 1. Your concerns: Bring a list of your concerns or questions about how your kid is doing. No matter if it seems silly or small. This is why we became pediatricians. To support you in your journey of parenthood. If we don’t address your concerns, you won’t hear anything else we say. So, let’s start with that. 2. Growth: This should include measuring weight, length, and head circumference. We will ask questions about nutrition, feeding frequency, physical activity, and how the child is doing when compared to birth weight and the growth curves. We want them to pick a line on the growth curve and stick with it. 3. Development: We will assess five domains of development – speech, fine motor, gross motor, problem solving, social/emotional. Usually with a formal assessment like the Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) or similar tool. Early Intervention service are available for kids who are not meeting their milestones 4. Full Physical Exam: This should include a full skin exam and looking for subtle signs of medical problems, specifically those that are related to your concerns. 5. Anticipatory Guidance: This is the teaching or coaching you get from your pediatrician to help you know what challenges are coming around the corner and new exciting skills your child will learn before the next well visit. 24 Mar 2022 | 19. Grow Your Family without Losing Your Marriage | 00:43:26
Welcome back Dads!! A few weeks ago, we discussed the struggle most couples face with staying connected to each other and maintaining good communication and friendship as you take on the challenge of parenthood. Then, I came across a couple that had the key to success and I had to bring them on the show. Dr. George Naum and his wife, Vanessa, have been coaching married couples for over 25 years. In 2018 they began specializing in physician marriage coaching. 1. Some of the challenges associated with having kids can be eased by having conversations about having kids before you get married or start trying for a baby. How many do you want? What will you expect from each other after baby is born? What support can you provide to each other? These answers may change over time, but you need to have at least started having these conversations early on. Dr. George and Vanessa Naum can be found at www.bestfriendsagain.com and Dr. Naum’s book “What’s Forever For” is available on Amazon and wherever books are sold. We are gearing up for our next big series on Development which will include deep dives into all the different areas of development and how dads can use their time with their kids to maximize Developmental Play. It takes a little humility to acknowledge these three points, but I think it will help us all have more successful relationships.
So this week, we will take a look at the reasons why our words matter and how we can take control of the way we think about and talk about ourselves, our wives, and our kids. We are coming up on the launch of our new website, docs2dads.com - even now, you can go to the website and join our mailing list to be the first to know about upcoming events, our newsletter for new episodes and another place for our community to come together, share experiences and find all of the resources available for dads. Dad life gets busy. It can be difficult to make time for what we need to do in order to care for ourselves. 23 Jun 2022 | 32. Financial Wellness ft. Andy Hill - Men's Health Month | 00:37:45
Our money is a reflection of our values. This is my biggest takeaway from the excellent conversation I bring you this week. Financial wellness is one of the biggest challenges for dads. Money problems are one of the most frequently cited reasons for divorce. Children can grow up with an unhealthy relationship with money whether they grow up with too much or not enough. But if we keep in mind that every behavior we take with our money should reflect our values, this makes conversations with our wives easier, and it provides context for how we talk to our kids about money - whether we are spending, saving, giving, or investing. Andy's advice and personal finance experience have been featured in major media outlets like CNBC, Forbes, MarketWatch, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, and NBC News. With millions of podcast downloads and video views, Andy’s message of family financial empowerment has resonated with listeners, readers, and viewers across the world. When he's not "talking money", Andy enjoys watching his kids play soccer, singing karaoke with his wife, and watching Marvel movies. Sooner or later you reach a breaking point or at least a moment where you know you have to make a change. This moment for me was when I melted down in a meeting in front of my boss and senior colleagues. I realized that while my energy and passion served me well overall if I couldn’t learn to harness that energy it would be bad for my health and make me less effective as a doctor, husband, and father!! 04 Aug 2022 | 38. The Most Important 15 Minutes of Your Day | 00:25:02
Every day you do things that don't necessarily feel important at the moment but are vital to the long-term development of meaningful relationships. It is in these daily seemingly mundane experiences that we find the joy and meaning of our family relationships. Large romantic gestures and long vacations are nice, but they aren't always practical and will only get you so far if you aren't invested in day-to-day family life. 01 Sep 2022 | 42. An Abnormal Reaction to an Abnormal Situation | 00:26:02
Much is made of children having "big feelings," but in some situations, this is not only understandable; it is expected. Dr. Viktor Frankl says in his groundbreaking, "Man's Search for Meaning" that an Abnormal Reaction to an Abnormal Situation is Normal Behavior. Throughout this podcast, we have spent a lot of time helping men prepare for fatherhood. As a pediatrician who has coached hundreds of families in the early months of life. I have shared my field guide for how dads can prepare for and adjust to their role as dads to get immense joy and meaning from that role. But when you go through the process a second time (or a third or fourth), there is someone else who needs to be prepared: the soon-to-be big brother or sister!! #docs2dads #fatherhood #parentinggoals #workingdads #bigbrother #bigsister #newbaby #pregnancy #pregnancytips Connect with Docs2Dads: Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drscottpeds Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/docs2dadspod Email: docs2dadspod@gmail.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/docs2dadspod Have a question about this or other topics? The modern American Healthcare system has turned many primary care clinics into a place with phone trees, 15-minute appointments, and surprise bills. 02 Feb 2023 | 62. Screen Time, Play Time, and Dad Guilt | 00:25:21
I’ve wanted to make this type of episode for a while now. I hope you like it. Part of my job as an academic pediatrician is to stay up to date with the latest research being done and published in the biggest research journals. Some of those articles are related to parenting - and are worthy of discussion and analysis in an episode. Today, we do our first dive into Hot Off the Presses Parenting Research with an article from JAMA Pediatrics called “Outdoor Play as a Mitigating Factor in the Association Between Screen Time for Young Children and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes” which explores the relationship between screens time, outdoor play, and development!! We discuss what the research team concluded from their study the Dad Guilt (or Mom Guilt) at the heart of the article and what I think you should know as you parent your kids today. Let me know if you like this style of episode and I’ll do more like this in the future!! Have a question about this or other topics? 16 Feb 2023 | 64. Learning to Juggle: A Dad's Take on "Having It All" | 00:27:19
There are plenty of commentaries to be found in the media and online about parents trying to “have it all.” Parents - moms and dads alike - are frequently trying to have an ambitious career, a fulfilling home life, a fun social calendar, and leave a meaningful impact on our world. Most discussion in this space revolves around ways to help moms make the most of their professional lives while being asked to do most (or all depending on your preferred news outlet) of the domestic work. But Dads wrestle with this challenge as well and this episode is all about my favorite analogy for making all the pieces come together and that’s the analogy of the juggler with some glass balls and some rubber balls. And what you should do if you find yourself trying to juggle a bowling ball!! Have a question about this or other topics? There is one question I get from parents which is most associated with anxiety and worry that one wrong move could be catastrophic. These are the questions about introducing new foods and worries about food allergies. What signs should parents look for to think about changing formulas? Is there such a thing as hypoallergenic formula? How do they work? Food introduction Do parents have to stick to same food for multiple days? What’s the likelihood that a kid would be allergic to a food that isn’t one of the Big 6? When should parents time offering higher risk foods based on age and risk factors? Who should think about seeing a allergy specialist before introducing certain foods? Can kids develop food allergies at any age or does it tend to show up early in life? 29 Jun 2023 | 82. Parenting Can Feel 'Good': 'Good Inside' Book Review | 00:42:40
Are you tired of fighting with your children over bad behavior? Do the tactics you’ve been trying fall short? You are not alone. You are NOT a bad dad. This week, It’s another Book Club episode - where we turn evidence-based research into practical, values-focused parenting tips. This week’s episode covers Dr. Becky Kennedy’s Book, Good Inside. You don't have to feel frustrated. You don't have to feel like a bad parent. This podcast will include my biggest lessons from this book and how I am applying these to my own life as a parent as well as with the families that I serve: 1.
