06 Jul 2020170 – Dr. X Files #2 – I became a martyr for medicine and my career00:56:01

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone!!

Get your popcorn ready. Get comfortable. We got a new episode of Dr. X Files. Remember, these are episodes of anonymous doctors speaking their truths in a format that makes them most comfortable.

This episode will blow your mind like the first one. When people talk about a “food chain” in medicine – let’s just say Doctor X is at the top of this food chain. She is highly specialized, well-compensated, and extremely satisfied with her career/lifestyle balance. This wasn’t the case a couple of years ago.

Decisions we all make to survive residency, can turn into pathologic lifestyle choices later as an attending. Well, this caught up to Dr. X early as an attending. Some of these decisions are rooted in people-pleasing and avoidance of conflict. Either way, don’t judge we’ve all been there.

Dr. X explicitly details how her decisions led her to sign a contract that was not very detailed, felt uncomfortable asking for market value for her skills, and put self-care on the backburner.  She also talks about how her reputation was almost ruined. Dr. X ain’t no punk though. She became the heroine of her own story and gives a masterclass on how she saved her career and is living her best life!!!

21 Jun 2021229 – This US couple retired at 39 and 41 and now live in Portugal00:51:44

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone!

Did you know that there is a growing movement of individuals and couples retiring in their 40s and for some even earlier? This is called being Financially Independent & Retiring Early movement. It’s safe to say that joining the FIRE movement requires not just discipline but a huge change in mindset.

My next guests are Christina and Amon Browning, who recently on their popular YouTube channel announced they retired in their early 40s. They called in all the way from Lisbon, Portugal, and we’re going to hear the nuts and bolts of mindset and lifestyle changes necessary to reach this feat. Some of the moves they made included saving over 70% of their income, making smart decisions with real estate, and having a “can-do” mentality.

If you haven’t discovered their YouTube channel then you are missing out. They’re videos are amazing and educational.

04 May 2020158 – Dr. X Files #1 – Why is my salary decreasing!?!? Didn’t our practice get bought by a Hedge Fund??!01:01:01

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone,

New series!!! Sometimes you have to meet doctors where they’re at. It takes a lot to get on a podcast and be 100% honest about how your practice and put your name on it. So, I’ve started a series where I interview doctors who have important stories for us to learn from – they just would rather stay anonymous. I don’t have a problem with it, and neither should you. Information is power, and we got a ways to learn before we can say we’re in the driver’s seat with healthcare.

My very first guest is a physician who trained at one of the finest medical institutions in world and decided to join a private practice. He lets us in to what it was like for a hedge fund / venture capitalist firm to purchase his group and the drastic effects it had afterwards. Doc keeps it real on this episode. He also talked about:

  • Making hard decisions between happiness and the almighty dollar
  • His attending’s thoughts on locum tenens
  • What does being a partner mean in private practice
  • The warning signs we all need to pay attention to when in practice.

16 Nov 2020196 – Pay off debt, Save Money, How secure is your 9-5 – with Tiffany “The Budgetnista"00:57:57

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone!!

“Shoot your shot!” Not sure where that quote originates from, but to me it means take a chance even if means you’re going to get a hard “No” in response. I’ve been a huge fan of Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche’s work for several years. Several months ago, I reached out to her to see if she would come on to talk about personal finance and self-employment.  Tiffany said yes, and now we’re here! On the real, her episode is a masterclass on hitting rock bottom, finding your strengths, and then believing you can monetize it.

More about Tiffany Aliche:
Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche, is an award-winning teacher of financial education and is quickly becoming America’s favorite, personal financial educator. The Budgetnista is also an Amazon #1 bestselling author of The One Week Budget and the Live Richer Challenge series.

Through her company, The Budgetnista, Tiffany has created a financial movement that has helped over 1 million women worldwide collectively save more than $150 million, and pay off over $100 million in debt, purchase homes and transform the way they think about their finances. These women that participate in this global movement call themselves, Dream Catchers.

Tiffany credits her experience as a preschool teacher for 10 years in Newark, NJ for defining her purpose behind The Budgetnista…education.

In 2019, Tiffany transformed her commitment into legislation when she partnered with Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight to write a bill that was later signed into Law A1414 (The Budgetnista Law). This law made it mandatory for financial education to be integrated into all middle schools in New Jersey.

To further her mission Tiffany has created and teaches numerous financial classes both online and in person. Her signature course is her annual, Live Richer Challenge with over 900,000 women participating in one or more of her Challenges.

She also blogs about personal finance for The Huffington Post and The Budgetnista Blog, co-hosts an award-winning podcast, Brown Ambition and has an online school, the Live Richer Academy that teaches women how to create, implement and automate their own financial education path.

The Budgetnista and her financial advice have been featured on Good Morning America, the TODAY show, PBS, TIME, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, ESSENCE Magazine, FORBES, Fox Business, MSNBC, CNN/HLN. She is also the featured financial expert for the popular daytime talk show, The Real.

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

It’s well known that doctors put patients first even though it may have negative social effects on doctors. Whether we call it professionalism or an edict, this way of life has allowed us to be viewed as unbiased advocates for our patients.

Dr. Danielle Ofri joins me on this episode to discuss an Op-Ed she wrote in the NY Times last year discussing if our professionalism is being taken advantage of by hospitals.  Dr. Danielle Ofri  is an internist at Bellevue Hospital and NYU School of Medicine. She writes regularly for the New York Times, Slate Magazine and other publications about medicine and the doctor-patient relationship. Dr. Ofri is the author of five books, including, most recently, “What Patients Say; What Doctors Hear.” Her TED talks include Deconstructing Perfection and Fear: A Necessary Emotion.

21 Mar 2022How a cheap & amicable divorce helped this doctor avoid financial ruin #27300:42:20

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

Divorce is not fun. There is nothing earth-shattering about that statement. Divorce not only can be devastating to your emotions, but it can be a bombshell to your personal finance. Does it always have to be this way?

In this episode, we’re interviewing Dr. X on how she was able to have a cheap and amicable divorce for only $1000. That’s right, I said it - a divorce during the COVID pandemic for only $1000.

I love Dr. X episodes because you get raw, unfiltered discussions about how folks feel about certain topics.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Inventory the reasons you are fearful or hesitant to divorce
  • Consult with a reputable family law attorney
  • Inventory what money can’t buy and use this in negotiations

21 Jan 2020145 - DOTB VS Day 2 - Work Smarter, Not Harder by Embracing Passive Streams of Income00:47:48

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

We’re on to Day 2 of the Docs Outside the Box Virtual Summit. Yesterday, we heard from Dr. Carmen Brown on how leaving the US to practice overseas both revitalized her career and her mental well- being.

Today we’re shifting to creating wealth for yourself but not through your job. A lot of people who have detached from their 9 to 5 refer back to the book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad as the catalyst. This book was written by Robert Kiyosaki in 1997 and told the story of his 2 dads – his real father (poor dad) and the father of his best friend (rich dad) – and the ways both men shaped his thoughts on money and investing

My next guest, Dr. Peter Kim has been doing the same for some time now. He’s he runs the famous blog Passive Income MD, and Curbside Real Estate, which is a concierge service for physicians looking to buy real estate. He’s here to help me parse through a recent interview that real estate mogul Grant Cardone did on VladTV, which is a popular YouTube channel focused on the news in Hip Hop. In this video interview, Grant talked about his childhood, how he started in real estate and also how he quickly multiplied his holdings. It’s a very polarizing interview, look below for the embedded video to watch.

I’m chopping it up with anonymous physician personal finance blogger Crispy Doc. We have similar immigrant and first-generation stories that led us down the path of becoming physicians. Taking safe jobs (i.e. teacher, engineer, physician) was an important way for first-generation children to establish their roots here in the United States.

Crispy Doc shares his journey through burnout and how finally grabbing control of his finances got him on the road to fulfillment.

On this episode you’ll learn:

  • How to figure out your retirement number
  • How his family background made an impact on his journey through burnout
  • How to shift your mindset with investing and take control of it
  • His personalized advice to me on how I can get on that path to Financial Indepence

We’re talking to Dr. Melva Pinn-Bingham, who is a board-certified radiation oncologist, and owner of 2 Cold Stone Creameries and a Subway restaurant. She’s on the show today to discuss why owning franchises is a tool she and her husband use to build wealth.

Prior to this episode, I didn’t have the best opinion of the franchising business. I have to admit, after talking to her, I am more open to this business model. Let’s say I’m keeping notes now.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Dr. Melva’s entire ownership portfolio
  • Why she prefers Cold Stone over Subway and most other franchises
  • Is owning a store difficult especially with managing teenage employees?
  • How she was selling donuts at Duke University home basketball games

07 Nov 2019136 – The Come-Up: Dr. Eunice Park on becoming the doctor she wants to be00:21:59

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

On this second installment of The Come-Up, you’re going to hear from a doctor who is on her way to becoming a doc outside the box. I met Dr. Eunice Park when I got invited by Physician CEO to speak to students several months ago. It was a big surprise to learn from Dr. Park that she was a listener of the podcast and actually learned about Physician CEO after listening to the podcast.

A couple of weeks later, we chopped it up for a candid conversation of who she was prior to and after Physician CEO. She’s very honest, and I’m sure you all can learn something from her. Make sure you listen and share this with others!

08 Nov 2021249 Top branding secrets every physician should know00:42:12

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

There is more to medicine than just memorizing textbooks or doing well on exams. Your bedside manner, working with staff, and communication with your colleagues is just as important. Basically, what is the experience people and patients should have when they meet and interact with you?

That’s what we call a brand. A quick Google search of ‘brand’ and you’ll find that it is the way a product, company, or individual is perceived by those who experience it. When is the last time someone in medical school or residency talked to you about branding as a doctor?

In today’s episode, we learn the top secrets to branding as a doctor. Dr. Guy Kezirian, board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of the Physician CEO program will be leading this masterclass. Physician CEO is a business immersion program located at Northwestern University’s Kellog School of Management. Ladies and gentlemen - that’s a Top 5 Business School!

Here are some of the questions you can expect to be answered on this episode:

  • If you work for the hospital, who’s your customer?
  • How do you brand yourself as a hospitalist or other hospital-employed physician?
  • What does self-awareness have to do with branding
  • What is Physician CEO
  • What types of doctors should be attending Physician CEO

Dr. Lynn Morski from the Quit Happens podcast joins me on this show to discuss how quitting strategically can be the pathway to a more fulfilled life. That’s right she’s a “Quitting Evangelist,” and she’s very honest about her pathway that has taken her through the tech industry, medicine, and also law.

My apologies for the short break in the beginning of the month. Check out the beginning of this episode to find out what happened.

On this episode, I’m chopping it up with Dr. Cedric Dark, the Founder and Executive Editor of Policy Prescriptions. Think of Policy Prescriptions as a cliff notes version of health policy research so that lawmakers can make bills based off actual evidence-based studies. Now at this for well over 10 years, Dr. Dark got his start while interning in Washington, D.C. and learning how much policymakers relied on politics and ideology.

Not only will you learn more about Cedric, but you’ll also get a civics lesson on exactly how health policy bills on funded on a federal level. For those who want to get more on the front lines of advocacy, especially with social media – this episode is for you!

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

What’s good everyone. This is a new series that is starting called: “Sh*t I wish I knew in residency.” Pretty simple concept, right? We’re so busy saving our patient’s lives, we think there’s no time to learn other stuff. Well, that other stuff are things like: 1. How to manage your money; 2. What happens if you can’t doctor anymore; 3. How to look for a job. Truth be told, the “other stuff” determines if you’ll be working in your 70’s because you have to vs saving the world doing the stuff you really want to do.

In this episode we’re discussing why you should be protecting yourself just in case you can’t doctor no more! That’s right, we talking about Disability Insurance with Pattern Insurance. Dustin Karas, Co-Founder of Pattern Insurance, jumps on to simplify the what and why behind Disability Insurance.

Here’s what to expect in this episode:

  • What is disability insurance?
  • Why you need disability insurance.
  • What are you protecting as a resident?
  • The top 6 companies you should get your DI coverage from.

The Guest:

Dustin Karas, Co-Founder and Head of Operations at Pattern, has spent the past 13 years simplifying disability insurance and helping thousands of busy doctors feel confident they have the right policy protecting their income. Pattern educates doctors while comparing all of their disability coverage options so they make the right decision the first time.

“Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.”

-Tony Robbins

I’m sure he’s not the first person to say or even think this, but he’s one of the most successful to do so. What’s the point of reaching all the goals you set for yourself, only to feel lonely or depressed at the finish line?

This is a common problem for high achievers; especially Type-A individuals.

Dr. Brad Bellard, who is a mindset and performance coach for men, joins us on this episode to discuss success without personal fulfillment.

Dr. Brad is an Amazon best-selling author, national speaker, and host of the podcast ELITE PerfoMENce with Dr. Brad addressing topics related to the spiritual, personal, and professional development of men. Dr. Brad is also a double-boarded non-surgical Sports Medicine physician and Regenerative Medicine Specialist. He has worked with multiple professional teams including as assistant team doctor for the NBA Dallas Mavericks and is a regular guest on the Dallas-Fort Worth radio talk show Inside Sports Medicine.

Things we discussed in this episode:

  • How do we succeed without our personal life being neglected
  • Fulfillment is not a by-product of success, it is a precursor to success
  • Is there such a thing as balance
  • His advice for “Hustle Culture”

25 Nov 2019138 – How owning real estate helps this physician couple live life on their own terms00:50:03

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s up and good everyone,

When the podcast first started, I spent time driving home the notion of being a good steward with your money. This included saving more than you spend, paying off student loan debt, and using index funds for passive investing.

The famous book by Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad helped the masses change their mindset from trading time for dollars, and embracing real estate as a driver of wealth. You can count me in on that group. Dr Renee and I are beginning our journey into purchasing multi-family homes and renting them out to develop an alternative stream of income. We’ll keep you posted.

The book also sparked the success of my next guests - Dr. Leticia and Kenji. They have worked very hard to build up a  portfolio of rental properties that is now allowing them to live life and practice medicine on their own terms. Taking an entire year off to travel - no problem! Picking up clinical shifts when they want to, not because they have to - they got this! So they came on the show to talk about how they started this amazing journey and how you can also. This episode is jam-packed with information and inspiration!!

In the intro of this episode, you’ll hear about their amazing course to help you get started on your journey with real estate. It’s called Zero to Freedom Through CashFlowing Rentals and yours truly recommends it (Full disclaimer: I am an affiliate and when you sign up for the course, it does help the show to grow). The course is made up of 6 modules and takes place over a 3-week span. This course is full of active learning, has a great community to keep you accountable, PLUS you get 5 CME credits also for completing this course - BOOM!!

Registration for the course starts on December 2nd. Click here to learn more about this course!

On this episode, I get to chat with a physician who’s splitting his time between expeditions in Antarctica and on the motorcycle race track. My next guest, Dr. Nicholas Steinour, is an Emergency Medicine physician currently practicing in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Steinour’s mantra is “enjoy things that make you fully present in life,” and without a doubt, he is living a life outside the box. You’re going to hear about how he’s become part of a team of physicians that provide medical support to expeditions in the South Pole. We’re talking about caring for seal bites, sea sickness, and of course hypothermia. He’s also combined his childhood passion for motorcycles with medicine and provides medical care to various racing circuits that are in Texas.

What’s good everyone!!

“Don’t make emotional decisions about real estate,” and “Numbers matter!” These are going to be the important takeaways from today’s episode. Weeks ago, we told you that we wanted to document our journey into purchasing our first investment property together. Before we get into all the number crunching, calculus shit; you need to hear about our first experiences with real estate.

Dr. Renee had positive experiences around real estate. Me, not so much. It started with an emotional decision that led me down a 13-year rabbit hole of bad mistakes. I get it, you’re probably thinking “Yeah that’s not going to be me.” However, it’s really important to understand how someone can make these decisions. Consider this a cautionary tale!!

My next guest is Dr. Nikki Ramskill – the personality behind the blog “The Female Money Doctor.” There aren’t as many physicians in the United Kingdom blogging about personal finance as in America, but her claim to fame is being the “first ever doctor in the UK to be blogging about money.”

The blog has become popular in the UK and focuses on the money stresses that her patients suffer from. She comes off as relatable as she shares her journey through student loan debt, investing, and breaking the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck.

On this episode, we’re going to learn more about the woman behind the blog. For example, what’s her personal approach to debt, and the mindset changes it took for her to change specialties from OB/GYN to being a General Practitioner.

On this episode we have Dr. Shilpi Agarwal, author of the book called The 10-Day Total Body Transformation: A Doctor's Guide to Getting Leaner, Cleaner, and Happier in Just 10 Days!  It is a guide that cuts through all the gimmicks, fad diets to give you easy to understand concepts and a 10-day simple plan to achieve the path to the lifestyle you are looking for!

18 Nov 2019137 – Using food to end generational diseases in her community with Dr. Lauren Powell00:47:44

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone,

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again. We’re in the holiday season and that brings celebrations, family events, and big dinner.

Although the food is great, much of it isn’t very healthy. Is a Turduken healthy!?? Let’s be honest, some of the foods we eat or how we cook has been passed down through generations. It’s 2019 and a lot has changed with how we think about food and nutrition.

My next guest, who is Dr. Lauren Powell, has something to say about this. Dr. Lauren, also known as “The Culinary Doctor,” is a board-certified family medicine doctor. Her goal is to meet individuals at whatever stage they’re at on their health journey and end generational patterns of food-related diseases.

Dr. Powell is serious about her goals. She’s meeting folks at live events with cooking demos, on television, podcasts and even with her Amazon Best-Selling book Food Essentials for the Busy Professional.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • How a close family member’s health scare shifted her focus to culinary medicine
  • How busy professionals can eat healthier
  • Tips to improve your social media
  • How she answers #imnotjustadoc

Lume Deodorant is an aluminum free, natural deodorant for underarm and private parts. It has been clinically proven to provide you with 48 hours of odor protection.

I used this product for my book launch prior to interviewing Dr. Klingman. It took me a while to get used to the natural scent of this product compared to the heavy scents of corporate brands, but the results definitely made me a believer and I recommend this product for you.

09 Sep 2019126 – This Tylenol Pill Costs How Much?! Price Transparency & Advocacy with Dr. Marty Makary00:46:53

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone,

Much like auto body shops, did you know that hospitals present different prices to individuals compared to insurance companies? You may think, “Yeah of course, hospitals present a more inflated bill to insurance companies!” Well, there’s evidence to show this is not the case. Price gouging and lack of transparency has been a major problem in the healthcare industry for decades.

Dr. Marty Makary, author of his new book The Price We Pay, drops in to talk about this and the research he is currently doing to combat this issue.

Dr. Makary is a surgeon, New York Times best-selling author, and health care expert. He is also a professor of Health Policy & Management at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. His areas of interest include the health care costs, overtreatment, the opioid epidemic, patient safety and the movement to make healthcare more transparent.

Let’s face it, more doctors want complete control of their careers and being employed might be a big hurdle to that. Nick Ball, with Provider Solutions & Development (PS&D), jumps on to discuss locum tenens.

These are the 4 main things we discussed in this episode:

  1. Why Dr. Nii decided to do locums right after fellowship
  2. The definition of locum tenens
  3. Differences between per diem work, 1099, employment

24 Feb 2020150 - An honest convo about weight loss and stress for Docs00:47:49

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

So back in the days of medical school, I used to be able to brag about eating a BigMac and then be able to run a 5 minute mile on the treadmill. Well those days are long gone. I can’t run anywhere near that fast and I still got the fast food habit. To make matters worse, how easy is it to get something healthy while on night shift and its 3AM?!!

I invited Dr. Siobahn Key to help us understand that weight is a common struggle for physicians and we often feel that we should have it figured it. Let’s get real - there are plenty of aspects of our job that make it easy to gain and hard to lose weight.

Dr. Siobhan Key is both a Family Physician, and Obesity Medicine and  Weight Loss Coach for Physicians. She is the host of a weekly podcast Weight Solutions for Physicians. Her passion is helping people learn to stop emotional eating and feel confident in their ability to manage their weight for the rest of their life.

What’s good everyone,

I recorded this episode earlier this month. We talking about the crazy misrepresentation of the osteopathic profession that happened with Dr. Sean Conley. You might remember, Dr. Conley is President Trump’s physician, and media personalities wrongly pounced on his credentials as an explanation for his questionable statements during press conferences. Today, Drs. Jen Caudle, Tyree Winters, and Tyeese Gaines join me to discuss this contested issue!

Do you need a separate license to practice aslocum tenens?

Should I go with smaller vs. larger companies?

What kind of cell phone plan should I get if I’m on the road a lot?

I’m in the beginning of my career, can I still do locum tenens?

These are all questions that many of you might have while considering going into locum tenens for the first time. It can be frustrating or even scary to think of changing how you work when you’ve dedicated years in residency practicing one way. Let’s get real, how many of our attendings knew much about locums or even gave it positive reviews?

Well on this episode you’re going to get a primer and history lesson on locums (Dat locums lyfe) from a physician who has been in this lifestyle since the early 80s. My guest is Dr. Andrew Wilner and he is the author of the book The Locum Life: A Physician’s Guide to Locum Tenens. And for anyone interested in locums, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!

SEND US A TEXT MESSAGE!!! Let Drs. Nii & Renee know what you think about the show!

What’s good everyone!!

A large part of providing good patient care is developing a trusting relationship. At times this may require an understanding of the nuances of your patient’s cultural and social makeup. Recent events bring to light the added pressure and marginalization that black and brown communities face just based on skin color alone.

Well on this episode, I got four docs who not only provide amazing care to their patients, but have done the work to identify and decrease how racism affects their patient population.

Here’s our panel:

Dr. Kameron Matthews - Family Medicine

Dr. Italo Brown - Emergency Medicine

Dr.Utibe Essien - Internal Medicine

Dr. Alden Landry - Emergency Medicine

We talk about how racism affects them personally and professionally. You’ll also learn in this episode:

  • Their opinions on healthcare disparities
  • Have we made progress over the past 50 years
  • Is there a magic healthcare legislation that can get rid of racialized healthcare disparities
  • Outcomes with Covid 19

Although you’ll find out that these issues aren’t new, hopefully, after listening you’ll be inspired to follow them and take similar action in your communities.

This is the method Renee and I used to save up for a down payment on a future property. The majority of Americans save up in similar ways.

Renee and I are looking for another real estate property! With each property, we want to know once they are purchased how soon can we start cash flowing those bad boys! There are numbers that we gotta run to make sure we know what we’re getting into. Long story short, it takes work but definitely, ANYBODY can do this.

Currently, we live in New Jersey and it’s a little too expensive for our blood.  So we are looking in Houston for our next property. Here’s the problem, how do you properly assess a house if you don’t know the lay of the land locally?

Still do-able. As a matter of fact, folks do it all the time. If you’re listening to this podcast more than likely you’re a busy professional who is trying to balance a lot. What if there was a system to make investing in long-distance properties easy?

That’s where Awning comes in. Awning is an online platform that helps busy professionals grow their net worth through real estate. We’re talking about a platform that takes you through identifying properties all the way suggesting local property managers so you can find tenants.

In this episode, the CEO of Awning - Shri Ganeshram, and the Hed of Brokerage Operations - Andreis Bergeron are talking about their platform and what it can do for you.

Things we talked about:

-What does Wall Street investing in real estate properties mean for you

-The difference between investing in real estate and the stock market

-Is the rate of return or cash flow more important in a recession

-How much does Awning cost you

And oldie but a goodie! Today’s throwback is an episode where Renee and I recorded in the backseat of a taxi cab in Ghana. We were on our way to Lekma Hospital in Teshie. On this episode you’ll hear about what it’s like to do medical missions.

We’re also in dire need of a General Surgeon to join us for the upcoming mission August 27th - September 11th. Check out http://www.ihcv.org to learn more about International Healthcare Volunteers. Send me an email: drnii@drniidarko.com if you’re interested.

“Having the Darkos describe their journey provided a solace that no sort of debt counseling would ever bring about. Anyways, this show is consistent in the fact that it always delivers gems and enlightens listeners. I’ve shared the podcast with my classmates. Please keep up the great work!”

How are you all handling this August heat?!?

Everyone who wants to reach out, make sure you show some love to the “Ask me a Question” button on the right of the website. I thinks its more personal and efficient to ask a question or just leave some feedback!

Today’s episode is 2 years in the making. On this episode, I’m chopping it up with Dr. Zun Lee who is a world-renowned photographer and self-described visual story teller. We chatted about his transition from the clinical physician world, to corporate healthcare management, to now as full-time photographer.

He’s a heavy hitter. His work has been featured in Forbes, The New York Times, Huffington Post,  and Wall Street Journal. In 2014 he put out a groundbreaking book called Father Figure: Exploring Alternate Notions of Black Fatherhood, and it has won several international awards.

On a side note, I recorded this with Dr. Zun Lee almost 2 years ago. This interview goes through so many different layers and I wasn’t sure how it would’ve been received when the show first started. I think that was a mistake for not being confident how you the audience would receive a podcast episode that talks about these issues. I apologize to Dr. Lee and to you – the amazing audience.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • Difference of patient care in United States vs Germany (where he trained)
  • How he handled going from being a “scrub” to a “suit”
  • How he found his love for photography after being forced to by a co-worker
  • Why vulnerability helps him relate to his subjects in photography
  • What his photos say about him
  • How he answers #imnotjustadoc

What’s good!!

We’re hearing from Dr. Nikki Ramskill on this episode of 5 minute Friday. Dr. Nikki, also known as “The Female Money Doctor,” joined us on Episode 115 to discuss why her patients are her target population for her personal finance writings.

After listening to that episode, you learned that she did a major about-face and changed medical specialties. Even in the United Kingdom, this is a big deal and she talked about the critiques that came her way. On this episode she’s going to tell us the resources she used to finally make the decision and leave the haters in her rear-view mirror.
