Episode 5| Zarathustra Prologue Sections 9 and 10| Friendship, Revaluation and Reason vs. Desire
00:24:09
In the fifth episode of Dissecting Philosophy with Dr McDonald, he is reading and discussing the ninth and tenth sections of the prologue in Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
The episode discusses Nietzsche's view of friendship and companionship, revaluation and challenging our ideas, newness and creation and the role of reason and desire which is represented through the eagle and the serpent. This is related to Nietzsche's earlier discussion of Ancient Greek Gods Apollo and Dionysus in his first book the Birth of Tragedy
Examples are discussed from the history of medicine to illustrate the necessity of changing our idea of what is thought is good for us and a brief discussion of Apollo and Dionysus' relationship. This dynamic is more closely looked at through the characters of Deckard and Rachel in Blade Runner.

00:24:10
In the sixth episode of Dissecting Philosophy with Dr McDonald, he has a general discussion of the prologue section in Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

An example from Plato is used in order to highlight how philosophy diagnoses and analyses problems in the world. Epicurus' view of death is also briefly discussed in order to draw a comparison with Nietzsche's view where we must focus on living our lives in the present and not focused upon an afterlife.

Episode 7| Zarathustra Of The Three Metamorphoses| Burdens, Freedom and the Creation of New Values
00:24:21
In the seventh episode of Dissecting Philosophy with Dr McDonald, he discusses the section Of The Three Metamorphoses in Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
The episode deals with the three images that Nietzsche creates in order to illuminate the changes that we must undergo in order to create new values. This change is from a camel to a lion and then an awakened child. The initial phase of a camel-like nature is a metaphor for the burdens of social norms and expectations that are placed upon us. We then have to remove this weight in order to create space for new values (leading us to the lion). This leads into the awakened child who represents a state of pure creativity who can create a new way for us to think.
Examples are given from Feminism and the Civil Rights Movement as they demonstrate the ways in which we can challenge social norms and views in order to reach a new way of thinking.

Special Episode 1| Roland Barthes on Wrestling| Morality, Suffering and Justice
01:02:52

It also deals with the deeper philosophical aspects of the role of truth, morality (good guy vs. bad guy), suffering and justice in the matches.
Lots of examples are given throughout to relate Barthes' view of watching wrestling in the Parisienne Halls in 1950s to contemporary wrestling matches of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and from new wrestling promotion All Elite Wrestling's (AEW) first pay per view event Double or Nothing.

Episode 8| Zarathustra Chairs of Virtue and Afterworldsmen| Psychology, Virtue and the Afterlife
00:35:24
In the eighth episode of Dissecting Philosophy with Dr McDonald, he discusses the sections Of The Chairs of Virtue and Of The Afterworldsmen in Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
The episode discusses the psychology of a virtuous individual and those who argue for an afterlife such as Socrates in Plato's Phaedo. Traditionally within philosophy virtue ethics is a set of principles that are to be good for us to uphold. For example, chastity prevents us from being adulterous. Also, metaphysical concepts such as the afterlife or the soul are argued to either exist or do not exist. Nietzsche's view is to understand the psychology of those individuals and creates a psychological profile of them. It is through this approach that we can understand the negative effects virtue ethics has on our mental health and mental state of those who argue for the afterlife.

Episode 9| Zarathustra Despisers of the Body| Instinctual Drives, the Body and the Self
00:23:59
In the ninth episode of Dissecting Philosophy with Dr McDonald, he discusses the section Of The Despisers of the Body in Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra.
The episode discusses the traditional view in philosophy where the mind has control over the body and is the basis for our ideas of the Self. This is illustrated in the philosophies of Descartes and Hegel. Nietzsche's view, influenced by Schopenhauer, argues for a reversal of this model where the instinctual and drives of our body effect our ideas and idea of the Self.
Kant's aesthetics view is also briefly discussed. Kant argues that art should be free from any relation to our desire or bodily drives. Whilst Nietzsche's view is that it is impossible for art to remain completely free from them.
