28 Nov 20236 Rapid fire questions from the audience about digital nomad life | Ep 12300:45:29

Which questions do YOU have about being being a digital nomad?

Jeff and Marisa get questions from you on a daily basis. Instead of responding to questions individually, they gather all the questions the audience sends in and ask each other each of them without preparation.

So you get raw, unfiltered advice and perspectives on life as a digital nomad, remote jobs, productivity, making money, and traveling the world.

You'll have to listen to the whole episode for the the answers, but as a teaser, here are the questions they asked each other:

  1. What is one skill or hobby you developed during your nomadic life that you didn't expect to pursue?
  2. Describe a moment when you experienced a major "win" in your digital nomad career or personal life, and how did it impact your journey?
  3. Have you ever encountered a language barrier that led to a humorous or memorable situation during your travels?
  4. Share an experience when you had to overcome your fear or hesitation to try something new while living as a digital nomad.
  5. If you could give one piece of advice to someone considering the digital nomad lifestyle, what would it be, and why is it essential?
  6. If you had to choose between a stable location-independent job or an uncertain but adventurous entrepreneurial pursuit, which would you pick, and why?

With the third and final interview of the Beach Commute's three founders, Diego shares a highly unorthodox and fascinating story.

After university, he founded Wifi Tribe, a community of digital nomads who live and work together in different places around the world every month. It was in Wifi Tribe in 2019 that Jeff, Diego and Marisa first met.

In this episode Marisa interviews Diego about:

  • What it's like to move around from continent to continent as a kid.
  • How he navigated very different cultures during his upbringing.

22 Jul 2024Which types of companies hire digital nomads | Ep 15700:46:16

Listeners constantly write into Beach Commute with the question, "Are there specific organizational characteristics that make them more likely to hire digital nomads?"

While there is no perfect model for a company that allows its employees to work from anywhere, there are some specific traits that make them more likely to be digital nomad-friendly.

Jeff and Marisa discuss 5 specific traits within organizations that you should look for.

  1. The size of the company: While not an absolute rule, there is a specific range that puts organizations right in the sweet spot that lends itself well to digital nomad work.
  2. Age of the company: There is definitely a correlation between the age of a company and the likelihood that they will have a work-from-anywhere policy.
  3. The most common industries: Which industries are most likely to hire digital nomads? You might be surprised to hear the answer.
  4. The top jobs: Are there specific types of jobs that companies tend to hire that are good for digital nomads?
  5. Company culture: Are there certain aspects of a company's culture that fosters a fully-remote environment? This may be the most important factor.

For this episode Jeff and Marisa used the Anywhere Atlas, a database of 300+ fully remote companies that let you work from anywhere.

Each company is fully reviewed and rated by Beach Commute experts.

01 Oct 2024The 1 thing you need to do to get a remote job today | Ep 16700:38:37

Job boards give you the illusion that there are more job opportunities than actually exist. If you hop on LinkedIn or a remote job board you'll find hundreds and sometimes thousands of job listings depending on the role you're looking for.

The problem is that about 50% of them are "ghost listings", meaning the role isn't real.

And of the job listings that are real, each posting will get hundreds of applicants.

With so many candidates applying for so few actual positions, how do you stand out from the crowd? Unfortunately, the answer is not a numbers game. Sending hundreds of applications each week will not increase your odds of getting hired. You're just adding more noise and wasting your time.

In this episode Marisa explains how to dramatically increase your response rate and get to the interview stage.

She explains exactly how to increase quality over quantity to maximize your chances of landing the job.

And if you are looking for help understanding which direction you should go with your career so that you can work remote as a digital nomad, Marisa is hosting a career clarity workshop.

13 Jan 2022The pros and cons of living in Italy as a digital nomad | Ep 2600:28:46

The pros and cons of living in Italy as a digital nomad

Have you dreamt about moving to Italy for a month, living in the romantic town of Florence, enjoying the beautiful hillsides of Tuscany on the weekends, and eating the best pasta of your life?

If so, this episode is for you…but it has a surprising twist.

Jeff recorded this solo episode after spending 1 month living in Florence with four other digital nomad friends. However, his experience wasn’t so magical, due to the wifi conditions and inability to get work done. This episode serves as a great reminder that the best vacation destinations are NOT always the same as the best digital nomad locations.

If working remotely from Italy is on your bucket list, make sure to give this episode a listen ASAP to make sure it goes off without a hitch.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why Jeff didn’t have a great experience living in Florence, even though it’s on the top of almost everyone’s bucket list destinations
  • The 4 criteria he uses to judge any digital nomad location, and his rankings for each as they relate to Florence, Italy
  • The 5 internet backups you MUST HAVE in each location while traveling as a digital nomad, and how even these precautions almost didn’t work Jeff (even though he’s an expert)
  • The amazingly weird “Macgyver move” that Jeff and his buddies did in Florence, resulting in “the most digital nomad thing you could ever do”
  • Why Jeff almost through his mifi device out the window and onto a rooftop
  • The 3 food and drink staples that Jeff lived off of during his month in Italy (hint: two of them were beverages, and the 3rd may surprise you)
  • Why Italy has the potential to bring out your insecurities, and what to expect if you live in this country
  • The top 3 activities Jeff recommends doing while living in Florence
  • And lastly, if you love great food, you’ll appreciate this episode (Jeff’s rule of thumb for food in Italy - “The food is going to be good. It’s just a matter of HOW good.”)

19 Sep 202310 Predictions about the future of digital nomad life | Ep 11300:52:50

Digital nomad-ism is exploding, with new workers leaving the office every day in favor of traveling the world and working from the road. While digital nomad-ism was already growing at a rapid rate, the pandemic kicked the movement into second gear.

With the massive increase in travelers, we are seeing an unexpected number of positive and negative outcomes. Jeff and Diego share some current statistics along with real-world trends developing that they are seeing on the ground.

Jeff and Diego tackle some some particularly tricky topics, including:

  • Trends in hiring remote workers.
  • How both employees and employers' way of thinking about the workplace is evolving (and sometimes not evolving).

Jeanna was a successful marketing professional in San Francisco climbing up the corporate ladder. From the outside looking in, she was was absolutely killing it, doing everything American culture would describe as “successful.”

But as she describes, “What society told me I should be doing wasn’t making me happy.” She wasn’t fulfilled by her professional success.

So she took a few vacation days and flew down to Belize. It was in Belize that she had an epiphany that she was living the wrong kind of life.

Shortly after, she sold all her things, quit her job, and moved full time to Belize. She also started her own marketing agency called First Page Strategy that hires 100% remote workers.

29 May 2023Top 10 pros and cons of working in different timezones as a digital nomad | Ep 9801:05:29

You would be shocked how much a different work schedule can impact your entire outlook on life. As a digital nomad, you will experience all the highs and lows that come with working strange (for you!) hours.

For example: You might be used to the routine of starting your day with the intention of working - getting up early, eating breakfast and going straight to work.

But what if you had the entire morning and early afternoon to explore a city in a new country you’re working from?

What if you started your morning by taking a yoga class, exploring new cafes, visiting museums, enjoying an afternoon walk, then finishing your day with work?

What about the complete opposite? What would you think of starting work at 5am, and finishing everything you have to do at 1pm? You would have the rest of the day to explore and do whatever your heart desires.

Depending on the person, working unorthodox hours can be a huge pro or a huge con, and there are tons of things considered.

In this episode Jeff, Diego and Marisa walk you through each of the top 5 pros and 5 cons you should be aware of as you start to venture outside your timezone.

Meet Laurie LeDuc, an original digital nomad who got her start back in 2008 when she worked in Australia for Catster, a social network for cats.

She then convinced her employers to let her start traveling domestically in the United States to start. (You’ll have to listen in for tips on how Laurie convinced her company to let her work remote and her recommendations for new digital nomads.)

Then she went on a legendary Wifi Tribe trip to Jamaica in which she froze on Blue Mountain in search of the world’s best coffee, and all the toilet seats breaking on the trip.

Curious about what digital nomad communities are like? Laurie breaks down exactly what you can expect with building relationships with some of the most meaningful people in your life.

Laurie also talks about her favorite “pinch me” moment when she blazed her own personal path that were “ridiculous, beautiful, and overwhelmingly good.” She said, “I felt like it was in the right place at the right time.”

Listen in for more tips from one of the most experienced digital nomads we have spoken with.

31 Oct 2022Accountant for Xerox escapes to Bali and becomes digital nomad | Ep 6800:39:38

Meet Danielle Lee, an ex-accountant for Xerox from the United Kingdom.

Back in 2019, Xerox gave her three weeks off for her to travel (and work a tiny bit) from Peru. She left the trip loving life, and asked if she could do this “digital nomad thing” more often, but they told her that it was only going to be a one-off type of allowance.

Bummer, but Danielle didn’t give up her dream.

She then doubled down and asked to go to Bali, to which they said “no, absolutely not.”

At that point, she had decided this lifestyle absolutely needed to be a full-time thing. She then gave the company an ultimatum and as a result they changed the policy, letting her work as a digital nomad.

She then joined Wifi Tribe because she was looking for community and flexibility WHILE traveling.

From there she went to Puerto Escondido (where she and Jeff met) to Florianopolis, Brazil. And she’s been traveling ever since.

She even took a full 180 degree shift from her life as an accountant to a personal coach and employee of Wifi Tribe!

Listen in to hear the rest of Danielle's inspirational journey to becoming a digital nomad.

12 Dec 20227 digital nomad communities to make life-long travel friends | Ep 7401:00:04

Being a digital nomad has an insane amount of positive aspects. You’ll get an amazing amount of culture, adventures, language skills, food experiences, etc.

But if you don’t find a community of likeminded people, it can get vey lonely. And one of the potential best positive aspects of being a digital nomad is finding community and making lifelong friends to share your experiences with.

Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone! Aside from finding ad hoc communities on Nomadlist and social networks, there are companies who help foster connections.

Ranging from hyper-coordinated to super-lax, Jeff, Diego and Marisa discussed seven communities that have a successful track record of attracting digital nomads.

In this episode, they discuss:

  1. Wifi Tribe
  2. Remote Year
  3. Hacker Paradise
  4. NomadBase/ Nomad Cruise
  5. Outsite
  6. Selina
  7. Unsettled

Note: Diego is a cofounder of Wifi Tribe, and both Marisa and Jeff are members of the company. We did our very best to be objective about a topic that is generally very subjective. In this episode we shared our experiences and anecdotal stories about each of the companies we know.

11 Aug 2021Quitting a six figure job to travel full-time, adventures with Jaime Goodman | Ep 500:51:31

Special guest Jaime Goodman joins our digital nomad podcast to talk about how she quit a six figure corporate job seven years ago to spend her life abroad.

She discusses her emotional decision to sacrifice money for time and experience. Jaime decided that her yearning inside to travel the world and experience freedom outweighed her desire to work a high-powered corporate job, where she felt that she wasn’t growing.

This was seven years ago. Since then she has been traveling the world and going on adventures full-time. She occasionally picks up work on the road, but for the most part she had dedicated her life to experiencing all the world has to offer.

Some highlights from Jaimes experience:

-Living in a converted hippie van in Costa Rica and doing pilates on the roof.

-The Flapping Duck guest house for $5 per night, with rats in the showers.

-Couchsurfing in Milan with Italian fashion models.

-Cleaning toilets in a hostel during the pandemic.

-How to balance treating yourself with challenging your comfort.

-American competitiveness

04 Feb 20256 Red flags to avoid when you apply to "remote" jobs | Ep 18500:32:16

Tired of job listings that claim to be remote but come with a million restrictions?

Jeff and Marisa are breaking down six red flags that could mean the difference between working from anywhere… or being stuck at home.

They’re revealing:
🚨 The misleading phrases companies use to sound remote-friendly (but aren't).
🚨 The hidden clauses that force you into an office—even after they promise remote work.
🚨 Why some “work from anywhere” jobs… really don’t let you work from anywhere.
🚨 The one thing missing from a job listing that should make you run the other way.

Plus, Jeff’s back at the beach for the first time in five years, and he’s realizing just how much he’s been missing out. 🌴🏄‍♂️

27 Jul 2022Top 10 places to live as a digital nomad for under $1,000 per month in 2022 | Ep 5400:54:23

Sure, there are TONS of places you can live for under $1k per month…but the question is whether or not they are legitimate digital nomad destinations.

So we came up with a list of places we have actually lived in that are both under $1,000 per month AND are digital nomad-worthy.

In order to qualify for this list, each location had to satisfy the following criteria:

  • Under $1,000/month in expenses (with modest spending habits).
  • Is a digital nomad destination (you’ll find community there).
  • Easy access to strong internet.
  • Easy access to food/drink/restaurants and entertainment.
  • Relatively safe.

And you would be shocked by the number of places we were able to come up with - as a matter of fact we had to substantially cut our list just to keep the podcast length manageable!

Expect many more suggestions in the future!

In this episode you’ll learn:

-First-had reviews and experiences in each of the 10 destinations.

-The exact cost of living comparison for various foods, restaurants, and apartment rental.

-Things to watch out for, and places to check out.

02 Jan 20232 Digital nomads completely off the grid - an interview with Hollie and Rusty | Ep 7700:35:45

Hollie and Rusty have taken digital nomad life to a completely different place: The wilderness.

Quite literally, they work from the most remote national forests in the United States, all while working online in digital marketing and IT security.

Hollie used to work with Jeff Baker as a content marketing strategist for Brafton. But late into her tenure she (using her own words) "strong armed" her employer to get them to let start working remote out of Colorado.

Technically she made this possible by first proving herself to the organization for years, then converting to a consultant so that Brafton didn't need to incorporate in a new state. Both parties got what they needed out of the deal.

Soon after going remote, she met Rusty and decided to go on a weeklong vacation living out of truck camper in national forests. That weeklong trip turned into six weeks. And that six weeks turned into a lifestyle in which they spend about half their time living and working remotely out of a camper van in the forest, and the other half the time in short-term leases around the United States.

They are living the lives of the dreams every day. They wake up with the most beautiful views in the entire United States for half the year, and the other half the year they choose whichever new city they want to explore.

You won't be able to find Hollie or Rusty anytime soon, because they are going to be moving to a remote island off the coast of Alaska next year!

28 Dec 2021Our best and worst travel moments of 2021 (year in review with Jeff, Diego and Marisa) | Ep 2400:48:14

Join us as we take a look back at the best and worst moments of our 2021 travels

On Instagram, life as a digital nomad looks perfect…the epic destinations, the freedom, the adventures. However, while digital nomad life is filled with some of the most amazing “pinch me” moments, it doesn’t come without its drawbacks.

On the Digital Nomad Experts podcast, we like to share both the highs AND the true lows with you…so that you have real expectations of what your life will be like when you begin living as a digital nomad.

As 2021 comes to an end, Jeff, Diego and Marisa take a look back at 2021, and share some of their favorite moments, destinations and experiences…as well as some of their least favorite experiences and travel fuckups. You'll get a lot of laughs as these 3 goofballs recap the good, the bad, and the ugly of their travels this year.

By the end of the episode, you’ll learn:

  • The favorite & least favorite places that they each lived this year (find out which place Jeff loved so much that he went back for a THIRD time, and which place most people LOVE, but left him with “unadulterated anger and frustration”)
  • The most underrated places they each lived (Diego said he thinks this place will explode soon, as it’s “the Bali of Latin America”)
  • The weirdest foods they each ate (we’ve all tried this insect in Mexico…)
  • The most thrilling adventures they each experienced (Diego’s was the coolest thing he’ll NEVER do again)
  • Their favorite accommodations that they lived in (find out in which destination Diego stayed in a villa that Shakira has also stayed in multiple times)
  • The WORST accommodations they accidentally found themselves in (learn about the “Airbnb fuckery" that led Jeff to a terribly dark apartment in Barcelona, and the dark basement I accidentally found myself staying at in Latvia)
  • Their very favorite moments as digital nomads this year (Diego’s favorite moment was the same moment he genuinely asked his guide - “Are we going to die?”)
  • Their LOWEST travel moments (some rock bottom health moments for Marisa and Jeff)
  • The most memorable people they each met this year (miraculously, of all the people in the WHOLE entire world, Jeff and Diego chose the SAME person as the most memorable in all of their travels!)
  • Their biggest travel fuckups of the year (Jeff had two missed flights, Diego almost got deported back home, and I almost ended up on a train to the wrong country)
  • What they've got in store for travel plans in 2022 (Egypt, Mauritius and Bali may or may not be on the agenda)
  • And so much more...

Over the past 5 years Marisa has given career coaching advice to over a hundred people, just like you. In almost every instance it’s been a mindset problem, rather than a skillset problem that holds you back from traveling the world while working.

Sound familiar?

But that’s GOOD news for you!

Meet Fredria (Freddy), another Beach Commute podcast listener who joined us for our second live coaching session with Marisa.

Fredria is a mother, a forensic toxicologist, a stock trading and financial literacy enthusiast, and otherwise genuinely interesting guest with dreams of creating community around the world.

Marisa walks Fredria through the 4 critical questions she asks her clients to reframe their entire thought processes.

In this podcast you will be able to “self-coach” yourself through the exact process Marisa would take you through in a one-to-one coaching session.

Are you getting ready to test the waters as a digital nomad? The biggest first major choice you're going to make after deciding to go remote is where you're going to go first.

It's scary and amazing.

Fortunately, Jeff, Marisa and Diego have been all over the world, so we know exactly what things makes for an easy first destination. We also know exactly what makes for a very difficult first destination.

Here are a few of the things we consider when choosing our destinations:

1. Ease of language - do they speak your first language? If not, can you understand the basics?

2. Cost - heading to Hawaii or Western Europe sure sounds sexy, but it's certain to break your bank in a hurry. We choose starter locations that won't completely drain your bank account.

3. Access to internet - Everyone wants to go to the beach, of course. But did you know that your wifi will probably be much worse, and sometimes unworkable in certain beach locations? We take this into consideration.

4. Community - Trust us, your perception of being a digital nomad will be colored negatively if you can find no one to connect with in your first destination. We selected starter destinations with strong digital nomad communities.

Join us to find out which six destinations you could easily hit the ground running as a burgeoning digital nomad.

02 Sep 2024Are digital nomads ruining the planet? | Ep 16200:58:15

Is the digital nomad lifestyle sustainable for the planet, indigenous cultures, and nomads themselves?

Some people accuse digital nomads and the lifestyle they bring with them of gentrifying impacted nomad hubs, raising the local cost of living, pushing out local businesses, and being culturally insensitive.

But is it justified? What are the facts? What can digital nomads do to minimize their global footprint?

In this episode Jeff and Marisa use data and personal experiences to help answer these questions. You can interact with the Beach Commute team on this topic by sending an email to hello@beachcommute.com

08 Jan 202413 Cool locations you'll only get to as a digital nomad | Ep 12900:58:37

Possibly the biggest benefit of being a digital nomad is the opportunity to go on once-in-a-lifetime weekend trips, every week.

Digital nomads typically spend their Monday through Fridays working a semi-regular work schedule. Outside work hours people will often go on mini-adventures: Finding hot new restaurants, hiking, going on tours, etc. On the weekends digital nomads often go on BIG adventures to nearby locations.

You could spend the week working in Florence, and the weekend driving through the hillsides of Tuscany, trying amazing new food and wine.

Or you could spend the week working in a cafe in Bali, and the weekend taking a boat on island adventures.

You could work in San Cristobal, Mexico and go on a rock jumping, waterfall rappelling adventure in the jungle.

The one thing all of these cool locations have in common are that you would likely NEVER see these places if you weren't living and working nearby as a digital nomad. They are so far removed from the beaten path that you simply would never manage to see these places on a normal 1-2 week vacation from the office.

Wrapping up her very first month as a digital nomad (Interview with Kristi Jacobsen)

In this episode, Marisa interviews Kristi Jacobsen, who just completed her first-ever month abroad a digital nomad to discuss what her experience has been like, the catalyst that pushed her to take the leap into living abroad for a month, and her journey along the way.

Kristi previously worked as a customer service manager at a music publishing company. Even though she wanted to travel while working remotely, her company wouldn't let her. After taking the Go Remote Employment course, Kristi learned the methods to find remote work, and negotiate a remote role that she can now down while she travels the world (spoiler alert: she's wrapping up her first month in Cape Town now, and loved it so much, she's extended her time there).

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • How the death of a family member ultimately led her to book her first trip as a digital nomad, and how this journey has been an unexpected part of her healing process
  • What Kristi finds most appealing about being fully remote
  • How the Go Remote Employment course helped her to negotiate a remote position that she can get paid to do while living anywhere in the world
  • Kristi's first impressions of life as a digital nomad (what's been great, and what have been the biggest challenges)
  • The biggest shifts she's experienced personally since going to Cape Town
  • How she's managed the 10 hour time zone difference while working, and the biggest shift with her work productivity that she never expected while living abroad
  • How her weekends are filled with epic activities rather than sitting on the couch at home all weekend watching Netflix
  • How she's made friends instantly abroad, and feels way less lonely as a digital nomad than she did back home (and how you can too)

08 Mar 2022What to do if you get hurt or sick as a digital nomad (Interview with SafetyWing's Sondre Rasch) | Ep 3500:36:32

Services like AirBnb and Uber have disrupted the age old hospitality and transportation industries and vastly improved the experience for nomads. The insurance remained largely in the stone ages in terms of usability, accessibility and alignment of incentives until SafetyWing.

bab

Sondre Rasch is a co-founder and CEO of SafetyWing - building a global social safety net. SafetyWing’s mission is to remove the role of geographical borders as a barrier to equal opportunities and freedom for everyone with a global home country on the internet. Sondre first founded SuperSide (YC W16), a platform for freelance designers. It was here he discovered the lack of a safety net for online remote workers. He encouraged colleagues to take up the torch and address the deficiency but when nobody did, he took it on himself and started SafetyWing.

In this conversation, Sondre shares his story on how the moment he fell in love with the magic of Tuscany inspired him to explore digital nomadism. Sondre explains how SafetyWing deals with one of the biggest hurdles which is finding THE place to go. In case of emergency, you cannot really think stuff through and do research, communicate with medical staff in a foreign language, and be aware of the medical bill.

In this episode, you’ll learn

  • How Sondre scaled from being a Political Advisor to the Government to become a Digital Nomad.
  • How Sondre operates his business with fully remote and distributed teamwork.
  • The scenarios you can do when/if you get injured abroad.
  • What is the typical scenario of having to deal with a health concern in a foreign country VS What would that journey be like if you had SafetyWing?
  • Solving most of pay out of pocket or die concerns in foreign private healthcare systems.
  • How does the Safety Wing Insurance work in real life.
  • The story when Safety Wing flew a person with a heart attack in a low altitude flight from Ghana to South Africa because there wasn’t a hospital that can take care of this medical condition in Ghana.
  • What’s on the roadmap for Safety Wing

Spend 36 mins with Jeff and Sondre to learn a ton on how to have insurance regardless of your passport and current country. Health related accidents can happen to anyone and anywhere so it's always nice to travel with a true international health insurance plan.

You can connect with Sondre via Twitter and don't forget to check out SafetyWing.

12 Oct 20225 Top reasons you will want to become a digital nomad | Ep 6500:42:34

Becoming a digital nomad will be one of the most impactful decisions you will ever make in your life.

Without. A. Doubt.

We talk about the five most obvious reasons to us that you'll LOVE being a digital nomad. Mind you, there are many, many more, but we will leave some of the surprises to you and your experiences.

  1. You can't see as much on normal vacation: When the only time you can use to travel is your 2-4 weeks of vacation per year, you'll never accomplish 1/10th of your travel goals as you can as a digital nomad. Also, you'll be much more likely to end up in the tourist traps.
  2. Adventures: And more specifically, UNPLANNED and random adventures happen all the time as a digital nomad. Normal Saturdays as a digital nomad could be the types of adventures that most people talk about as life highlights that they talk about the rest of their lives.
  3. Culture: It's REALLY hard to get a true cultural experience on a quick 1-2 week vacation. As a digital nomad, there will be countless times you will even accidentally end up in a cultural experience.
  4. Food: Closely related to "culture", you'll likely taste the best, and sometimes strangest food you'll ever try in your life (like llama, ah!).
  5. Building community: As a digital nomad, you will meet some of the most interesting, intelligent, compassionate friends of your life. Digital nomads tends to be very like-minded in values, so it will feel like you're talking with a lifelong friend the very first time you meet.

Which of these reasons do you want to become a digital nomad? Did we miss anything? Write us at hello@beachcommute.com.

What are the top destinations you have in mind when you think about traveling as a digital nomad?

Most people think of the classic hotspots like Medellin, Bali, Mexico City and Thailand.

And those are hotspots for a great reason: They are excellent locations to live as a digital nomad.

  • Strong internet

And with the constant improvements in internet connectivity around the globe, new remote locations are becoming workable every day.

Jeff and Marisa discuss 6 unique destinations they've traveled that are well off the beaten path. They discuss all the factors that determine whether or not they are workable locations.

Most people who become digital nomads are looking for more from life. Whether it's seeking more freedom in life in their lives, cultural experiences, adventure, community, or checking new locations off their bucket list, everyone became a digital nomad with some sort of goal.

There was a statistic published that stated within one year of moving to a different location your happiness can double. And this statistic was just meant to explain a person's potential for improved quality of life when moving somewhere full-time, rather than nomadic.

In this episode, Jeff and Marisa discuss some very surprising ways that becoming a digital nomad can directly and indirectly impact you mood and sense of wellbeing.

05 Feb 2024Does your age affect your chances of getting a remote job? | Ep 13300:48:47

People of all ages are embracing the digital nomad lifestyle around the world. But perhaps the biggest hurdle to kicking off this lifestyle is getting a fully remote job that lets you travel the world while you work. And there may be subtle biases during the hiring process that you need to be aware of.

Legally, hiring managers are not allowed to discriminate against any applicant based on age. But, we don’t live in a perfect world, and implicit biases exist, whether we like it or not.

In this episode, Marisa discusses the specific ways hiring managers may disqualify your application based on your age. Marisa then walks you through practical steps you can take to ensure that your age does NOT become a factor during the hiring practice.

Ideally you wouldn’t need these techniques, but the reality is that this is something we have to deal with. Using these specific tactics you will learn how to ensure that your age is not a factor, and you get hired based on your qualifications and merit.

08 Apr 2024How to find remote job listings that let you travel | Ep 14200:34:24

Finding legitimate, fully-remote job listings is NOT a straightforward task.

As a matter of fact, job boards are a bit of a mirage. With thousands of "remote" job listings posted at any given time, you would think that your potential for finding a strong opportunity is good.

In reality, around 1% of those job listings are legitimate, fully-remote, and from quality companies.

In this episode, Marisa and Jeff walk you through the exact steps you need to take in order to identify remote jobs that give you permission to work from anywhere in the world. Be prepared, it's a bit of work. Finding legitimate job listings is an entire job unto itself. The hard part really starts with polishing your resume and cover letter, networking with decision makers at the company, preparing for interviews, etc.

11 Nov 2021Becoming a digital nomad at 50 years old (interview with Palle Bo) | Ep 1800:55:09

In this episode, Marisa interviews Palle Bo, a 55-year-old digital nomad from Denmark who began traveling the world 5.5 years ago when his kids left for University.

Palle lived in the same small, rural part of Denmark for the first FIFTY years of his life, never really leaving. Yet, in the last 5.5 years since he reinvented his life as a digital nomad, he’s now traveled to over 97 different countries.

    In this episode, you'll learn:

    • How it feels to be “a bit older than most other digital nomads who are traveling” (his words, not ours)
    • Why he chose to travel after a divorce, and how his kids (now 24 and 27 years old) played a role in the timing of his nomad life
    • How a trip to Cape Town sparked his desire to become a digital nomad full time
    • How he planned out every detail of his first years of nomad before even leaving, and why he completely ended up changing his plans just one week into his journey
    • How he chooses which destinations to travel to next, when he can go anywhere in the world at any time
    • The secret he discovered as to why digital nomads feel like they live a fuller, longer life compared to those who don’t travel
    • Why he and his children have an even better relationship now than when he lived with them back in Denmark, and what it was like when they visited him in North Korea, Japan and South Africa
    • The reason he may get a permanent house 15 years from now (and no earlier), and why he never wants a big house again
    • How he finds community while traveling solo
    • Two ways he’s booked months of free accommodation while on the road, and why traveling has actually been LESS expensive each year than living in the countryside of Denmark
    • The two major pieces of advice he has for someone who is considering living the digital nomad life (we love these!)

03 Oct 20225 Countries in Africa that we've lived as digital nomads (and whether we would recommend them or not) | Ep 6400:54:30

Interested in visiting Africa as a digital nomad? You're not alone!

While Latin America, Bali, and Thailand get the most press for top digital nomad destinations, Africa has quietly been turning into a digital nomad powerhouse.

Without giving away the specific cities (you'll have to listen to find out!) we talk about:

    1. South Africa: Our destination boasts: A massive digital nomad community, amazing places to hike and take pictures, up-and-coming coworking spaces and laptop-friendly cafes.
    2. Mauritius: Looking for an island vibe FAR removed from civilization? Lush jungle-y feeling? Clear blue waters? It's not exactly an up-and-coming digital nomad community, but it's moving in that direction.
    3. Nigeria: For the brave adventurers and digital nomads out there, Nigeria is an incredibly raw cultural experience, albeit a difficult place to work remotely. It's not the easiest, but it's doable.
    4. Egypt: Another one (and our city in particular) that's definitely on the up-and-coming digital nomad destination list. And if you're into diving, this is one of the top places in the world.
    5. Namibia: The land of adventures on the Serengeti. Definitely not set up for the digital nomad life (yet!), it is one of the coolest countries in the world and worthy of the extra work to make the trip work.

Through hearing these stories, we hope that it gives you the courage to know that you can manage any health scare abroad too (hopefully you’ll have none).

19 Feb 202410 Otherworldly destinations to visit as a digital nomad | Ep 13500:48:20

Otherworldly: Relating to an imaginary or spiritual world.

One of the many, many benefits of being a digital nomad is that you sometimes end up in places that look like a completely different planet. These are places where you have to pinch yourself, because you're looking at landscapes that you have only seen in movies, or your dreams.

These locations aren't often the places where people live and work as digital nomads, but rather nearby destinations that you travel through on mini adventures. They're usually so far off the beaten path that you'll never be able to access them with the typical two week travel vacation.

Marisa, Jeff and Diego have been to dozens of otherworldly places in their travels as digital nomads. In this episode they share their top 10 locations. Some of the locations they discuss are:

    • The Skeleton Coast in Namibia.
    • The Rainbow Mountains in Peru.
    • The salt flats in Bolivia.
    • The Wahiba desert in Oman

22 May 20235 Most popular travel destinations and where to go instead as a digital nomad | Ep 9700:50:54

Who wouldn’t want to go to places like Rome, Paris and Madrid?

Where do you dream of going in Europe?

We all know the major hotspots in Europe that everyone wants to visit at some point in their lives.

But should those places be on your list as a digital nomad? Sometimes these locations are better suited as vacation destinations rather than digital nomad destinations.

Jeff, Diego and Marisa break down the top five common European travel destinations through the lens of long term digital nomads to answer that question.

Sure, some of these places may be dreamlike and beautiful, but they may not translate AT ALL to a place to a travel and work.

When considering a destination, they consider the following criteria:

    1. Is there a digital nomad community?
    2. Is the internet infrastructure strong enough to support regular online work.
    3. Is the cost of living too high to support a digital nomad lifestyle?
    4. How accessible is the city? Is it super remote, or is it near a major airport.

For those places that don’t qualify as strong digital nomad locations, Jeff, Diego and Marisa offer similar alternatives that satisfy each of the criteria that will make your experience as a digital nomad positive.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a 100% online profession, making it an excellent career option for people who want to become digital nomads.

Yet, we don't see a ton of SEO experts while traveling, which is very confusing.

Matt Davison, 10 year digital nomad veteran and SEO agency owner, breaks down why most people aren't taking advantage of this lucrative opportunity. The main reason may come as a bit of a surprise to you!

As an agency owner regularly hiring digital nomads and fully-remote workers, Matt talks about the entry level jobs that can get you started as an SEO. He also discusses the crazy number of skills you gain as an entry level SEO that you would be exposed to.

What's surprising to most new SEOs is that they end up learning about nearly every aspect of digital marketing. They also learn how to use a diverse tech stack, making them more marketable for other digital marketing specialist positions.

Being a digital nomad of 10+ years, Matt also has insider advice for new and upcoming digital nomads on: finding community, discovering coliving spaces, and his take on the best places to travel.

26 Jun 2024The real secret to getting a fully remote job | Ep 15300:32:05

Most people assume that they can get a remote job by directly applying to job listings they find on job boards.

It’s VERY rare that people actually get jobs this way. The majority of the time these job applications get lost in the abyss of hundreds of applications.

As a matter of fact, if your application DOES get looked at, the average amount of time a recruiter will spend on it is 6 seconds. 6 seconds is all you get!

You need to completely reframe the way you think about getting a job to maximize your odds of getting a job.

In this episode Jeff and Marisa walk you through a technique that will optimize the likelihood of getting hired.

Hint: The best way to get hired at a fully remote company is by following companies rather than chasing individual job listings.

And the best way to do that is finding companies that truly give you the freedom to travel anywhere while you work.

Fortunately, Beach Commute has spent 3+ years tracking down the very best companies in the world to work from. Beach Commute has launched a fully filterable database (called the Anywhere Atlas) of 300+ awesome companies, rated by four important factors:

    1. Peer reviews - how people who actually work for the company feel about working with them.
    2. Remote work culture - how much the company embraces a fully-remote work style.
    3. Employee perks - the benefits the companies offer like 4 day weeks, laptops, medical coverage, etc.
    4. Company culture - the type of positive environment management fosters for employees.
