03 Sep 20201: Digital Careers - Trailer00:01:34
Welcome to The Digital Careers Podcast.

BartonRock's Digital Careers podcast offers insights and advice on advancing your digital career, as well as making your digital hiring more effective.
17 Sep 20201: S1 E1: How can gender diversity within data and technology be resolved? 00:40:23

I was pleased to be joined on the show by Shan Flynn, who is an experienced human resources professional having worked in prominent HR roles with Ford and Boots in the UK before becoming global HR Head at AS Watson (part of Hutchison-Whampoa) in Hong Kong and then leading Walmart China's HR function. She was appointed Global CHRO of Adecco Group, one of the world's largest staffing groups, based in Zurich in 2016 where she still lives and runs her own advisory firm ShanthiFlynn.com

Shan and I discussed several themes including:
  • Why some industry sectors face such a gender imbalance
  • Why the data and technology sector attracts such a small percentage of women - data suggesting under 20% of the tech workforce in the UK is female
  • Why organisations should be concerned other than ‘being seen to do the right thing’
  • How the data & tech industry can address the imbalance and what individuals themselves can do to help change the direction of travel?
  • Shan offers her career advice to help women (and men) advance their digital career
  • She finally provides some tips on where she'd be channelling her energy to address gender imbalance if she was CHRO of a company hiring in digital.

If you'd like to reach out to Shan, she can be contacted via https://www.linkedin.com/in/shanthi-flynn-200024b1/

In this week’s episode of Digital Careers, my guest is Ben Rhodes, former-Group Marketing Director of Royal Mail in the UK.

We discuss: Digital is not a silver bullet for companies.

‘Digital’ is often a word thrown around as if it’s the apparent solution to many companies’ problems. This podcast illustrates that for digital to be effective, there are a range of other considerations that companies must be factored in and executed well.

How much oversimplification do you believe exists with companies seeking to embrace digital?

How does the energetic fervour towards digital, risk masquerading itself as strategy?

What are the ideal conditions for digital to give companies greatest impact?

The things in his experience Ben’s found hardest to achieve for companies digitally transforming?

What Ben’s learnt about hiring within digital?
