05 Apr 2022Anapanasati as a Skill Development on the Eightfold Fold Noble Path | Peter J #12 | 8.18.2100:52:21

Dhammarato answers Peter's questions about how the practice of Anapanasati plays into the 8 Fold Noble Path. In breaking down the building blocks of the Path, Dhammarato pays an acute attention to the Right Effort of "bending the limb" by intentionally getting rid of the "big gray booger" aka junk thoughts. Another metaphor Dhammarato uses as a result of the practice is "sea legs" of Upekkha - the dynamic balance that allows one to handle the high seas of life.

05 Apr 2022How to Feel Safe, Secure, Satisfied and Successful through Anapanasati Practice | Justin #3 | 8.2.2101:37:27

Justin and Dhammarato discuss the differences in meditative approaches practiced by the Buddhists and the Westerners. Justin shares that by adhering to the method of Anapanasati, he can see tangible results in his everyday lifestyle and ways of thinking. Dhammarato revisits the issue of safety and security as a starting point for developing satisfaction and, later, success in life. He gives a more accurate definition of "enlightenment" as an easily available yet not permanent state of mind. He then focuses on sustaining it through an everyday practice by using Sati, or "remembering to catch yourself" and Nurturing yourself back into it by gladdening the mind with wholesome thoughts.

24 May 2022Marijuana Musings & Wisdom vs. Rules | The Sangha UK #46 | 4.24.2201:11:13

The Sangha talk about the history, politics, and significance for practice of marijuana use, leading to a discussion of the precepts, vinaya, and the pātimokkha and understanding the difference between wisdom-based investigation and blindly following rules. #marijuana #wisdom #precepts

Majjhima Nikāya 22 Alagaddūpamasutta - The Simile of the Snake https://suttacentral.net/mn22/en/sujato?layout=plain&reference=none&notes=asterisk&highlight=false&script=latin (Bhikkhu Sujato) https://suttacentral.net/mn22/en/bodhi?reference=none&highlight=false (Bhikkhu Bodhi)

“Bhikkhus, this bhikkhu is called one whose cross-bar has been lifted, whose trench has been filled in, whose pillar has been uprooted, one who has no bolt, a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is lowered, who is unfettered. And how is the bhikkhu one whose cross-bar has been lifted? Here the bhikkhu has abandoned ignorance, has cut it off at the root, made it like a palm stump, done away with it, so that it is no longer subject to future arising. That is how the bhikkhu is one whose cross-bar has been lifted. “And how is the bhikkhu one whose trench has been filled in? Here the bhikkhu has abandoned the round of births that brings renewed being, has cut it off at the root…so that it is no longer subject to future arising. That is how the bhikkhu is one whose trench has been filled in. “And how is the bhikkhu one whose pillar has been uprooted? Here the bhikkhu has abandoned craving, has cut it off at the root…so that it is no longer subject to future arising. That is how the bhikkhu is one whose pillar has been uprooted. “And how is the bhikkhu one who has no bolt? Here the bhikkhu has abandoned the five lower fetters, has cut them off at the root…so that they are no longer subject to future arising. That is how the bhikkhu is one who has no bolt. “And how is the bhikkhu a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is lowered, who is unfettered? Here a bhikkhu has abandoned the conceit ‘I am,’ has cut it off at the root …so that it is no longer subject to future arising. That is how the bhikkhu is a noble one whose banner is lowered, whose burden is lowered, who is unfettered.”
