Nathaniel Lawson completed a DMD/PhD program in the field of dental materials at the University of Alabama under the mentorship of John Burgess.  After a stint in private practice, he returned to UAB in 2014 to teach and perform clinical and laboratory testing of dental materials.  In 2016, he became the Director of the Division of Biomaterials and the program director of the Biomaterials Residency program at UAB.  He performs research for most of the major dental manufacturers to test the properties of new dental materials both in the laboratory and in the clinic.  He has written over 150 published journal articles, textbook chapters, and abstracts.  He serves on the editorial board of Compendium, Dental Products Review, and the Journal of Adhesive Dentistry and was recently elected to the ADA Council of Scientific Affairs.  He was the 2017 recipient of the 3M Innovative Researcher Award and the 2016 Stanford New Investigator Award, both from the ADA.  He lectures nationally and internationally on the topics of dental ceramics and direct restorative materials. Dr. Hobbs is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and has over 25 years of dental and periodontal experience. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in College Park and went on to receive her DDS from the University of Maryland Dental School, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Dr. Hobbs completed her General Practice Residency at York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania and was the Chief Resident the following year at Carolina’s Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Doc, I practiced through the 2008 bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers. I met the financial crisis that led to the Great Recession when investors withdrew a record $196 billion from their money market accounts. 2020, you're no 2008. I’ve been contacting my friends at Henry Schein and Benco. In 2020 Benco closed fewer accounts due to collections/payment issues than in either 2018 or 2019, in fact in 2020, the number of accounts closed due at Benco according to my buddy Chuck Cohen, the managing director at Benco Dental and the only man in dentistry smart enough to be published in the Harvard Business Review, said their practice retirement sale closure declined more than 20% vs. 2018 or 2019. Halfway through 2021, the numbers indicate that the trends from 2020 are holding steady. Why? The federal programs to support dentists, most notably the PPP - Paycheck Protection Program  worked, Benco had fewer collections issues in 2020 vs two prior years. Fears of the pandemic leading to either an exodus of doctors from the profession due to health financial fears or an overall consolidation wave due to DSO acquisitions are overblown, in fact, fewer dentists closed due to retirement/sale/closure than in the two prior years, probably due to a combination of a slowdown in practice acquisitions by larger players during and directly after the shutdown and dentists deciding to remain in practice post-pandemic, possibly because their net worth declined during/after the pandemic.

Founded in 2004 by a fresh graduate from the College of Dentistry at the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Lance Schmidt. A glutton for punishment, Dr. Schmidt had actually just finished an extra year of study, completing the prestigious and highly selective Advanced Education of General Dentistry program, also at OU.

After consulting with an experienced dental practice transition attorney, dental CPA and dental practice consultant (with over 90 years experience in dentistry combined), he bought a practice at the age of 28. After highly overpaying for this practice, he then proceeded to work 7 days a week for the next three years - moonlighting at other clinics in addition to his 4 clinical days a week, at Reflections. He even mowed his own lawn and did the weekend cleaning during that time, just to keep his head above water.

Finally, after three years of abject misery, struggling just to make ends meet, he and his wife, Stephanie, who also worked at the clinic as the sole dental hygienist, were finally able to write themselves a paycheck.

He then proceeded to flip the traditional start-up model on its head. So usually a young dentist goes in to partner with a dentist nearing retirement, at their practice. In Dr. Schmidt’s case, he hired one to come work for him. In the process, he met a lot of his loyal patients and when the other dentist was ready to retire, Dr. Schmidt merged three practices into one and soon hired his first ever associate dentist.

After deciding to focus on growth and developing leaders within the office in 2012, the practice has grown 220%. They have a team of 18 people including three total dentists, three full-time hygienists, four dental assistants, a variety of admin personnel and even their own marketing director.

Also joining us today, in addition to and at the request of their Commander in Teeth, are some key members of the team. Joining us are both Associate Dentists, Dr. Kimberly Greenlee and Dr. Marie Bockus.

Dr. Bockus earned her doctorate from University of Oklahoma and is married with three young kids, speaking of which, she actually enjoys treating children and provides that service whenever possible at Reflections, thus extending the life expectancy of the other doctors by at least ten years.

Dr. Greenlee earned her undergrad at Texas Christian University but added her dental doctor initials also at the University of Oklahoma. Married with two boys, she’s practiced dentistry for over ten years and really enjoys a good root canal.

Deb Roberge has held almost every position in the dental profession other than that of a dentist.  She began her dental career shortly after high school in 1963. Her interest in dentistry was something she had considered for years.  Her hopes were to someday graduate from dental school, but it just wasn’t in the cards for her yet with it all, she has accomplished quite a bit.  Deb still has an interesting story to tell and has had quite a journey to share.

She enrolled in a dental assisting program and upon completion, happily jumped right “in the trenches” as a dental assistant on Long Island and New York City where she quickly progressed to the business office.  Deb relocated several times; to Arizona, Washington state, and then back to Arizona.  Upon moving to Arizona in 1985, Deb purchased a Crown and Bridge Lab.  This is where her exposure to the daily challenges that many of her dental practices were facing came to light. Deb wanted desperately to help and find some of the answers to the struggles particularly with hiring, integrating team members and of course the huge turn-over that seemed so prevalent in our industry.

Over the years, she served in a large number of practices as a coach and advisor.  It was during her tenure working with a consulting group in Phoenix that she perceived a critical need for a new kind of placement service.  So many doctors with which she interfaced expressed their frustration with both the service provided by existing staffing agencies, and their own failed efforts to acquire and integrate the best team members.  Deb’s prior interaction with teams along with recognizing the challenges between the employer and employees, became her motivation to make a difference in this critical area of practice management.

In 1997 in Phoenix, Deb created a dental-only placement agency with an innovative business model.  Within 5 years, she had provided placement assistance for over 800 practices, and had personally interviewed over 3,000 job seekers.  She sold her initial business in 2003, and then expanded her concept into a national franchise system with 8 locations across the country by 2009.  It was a thrill for her to see how far her efforts took her, but traveling and very little time for herself or her family, led her to sell the entire franchise system and move on.  Over the years that followed she placed personnel remotely for dentists across the country and enjoyed the interaction.  This service grew with no advertising at all, strictly word of mouth from dentist to dentist. They would call and she couldn’t say “no”.

Having had the opportunity to work with many specialists (especially periodontists), Deb observed (and heard from doctors and their teams) that existing practice management software systems simply fail to address many of their most important business needs. Bill is a native of the great state of Idaho and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science and Business Management from Brigham Young University. He and his wife, Morgan, are the proud parents of 2 year-old boy/girl twins and are expecting their third child in June.

Bill is a recipient of the Army’s Health Professions Scholarship and, following graduation, will attend Basic Officer Leadership Course in San Antonio for 6 weeks before completing a 1-year AEGD at Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma, Washington.

I've been in practice 4 days/week for 40+ years and teaching 1 day/week for about 20 years. My training includes tons of mentoring by a famous periodontist and completion of a 3 year program in Advanced Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington. My practice focuses on basic general dentistry with an emphasis on perio/pros combination cases. The courses at UW I'm involved with are the first year courses in anatomy and occlusion. I give up to 3 lectures/year on anatomy, bite splints and TMJ. I also run a study club. 

I've been married for 43 years (Howard met my wife Linda last year when we visited his office). My home is here in Bellevue and we have a condo in Scottsdale. We have one son who lives in LA with his wife. He's a psychiatrist working for LA County Jail System, and his wife is a hair stylist who owns her own shop in Pasadena. Dr. Kwang-Bum Park graduated from dental college of Kyungpook National University in 1985 and received his PhD degree in 1995 with the thesis about ‘the periodontal regeneration’. In 1993, he started seminars for private dentists to teach clinical periodontics and implant dentistry. Until now, more than 1,500 dentists completed this course in Korea. From 2000 to 2001, he went to the department of periodontics, school of dentistry, UCLA as a visiting scholar. After he came back from UCLA, he opened the biggest dental hospital called “MIR dental hospital” in Korea with 70 operatories and more than 20 dentists and 120 employees at Daegu, Korea in 2002.

With great success of the first “MIR dental hospital”, many dentists wanted to join and share the know-how and brand name. So he made a dental hospital network named “MIR Network”. Now it has 22 branches and more than 1000 employees and doctors in South Korea in 2009.

Almost at the same time with the opening of MIR dental hospital, he began a company called “MegaGen” to produce dental implants. In a short period of development, MegaGen took the leading position in the field of dental implant in Korea.

He is an active member of Academy of Osseointegration (AO) and also an international member of American Academy of Periodontology (AAP).

Jenn Rhoades is the CEO & Co-Founder of Smile Virtual. Born and raised in San Diego where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from National University. Born in Maryland, Chris became fascinated by dentistry at an early age when he lost #8 in a family touch football game. After graduating from dental school, purchasing his own practice, and subsequently selling that practice and most of his belongings, Chris followed a calling to serve as a dental missionary in Cameroon, Africa for 5 years. It was on this mission where Chris learned the true value of providing legendary patient care, and the necessity to provide that care very well, and very fast. Chris often had patients lined up around the block for treatment, and if he could not serve them that day, they would have to walk miles back home, and return again the next day in hopes of being served. Dr. Carl E. Misch is “Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, and Director of Oral Implantolgy (hon) in the School of Dentistry, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Dr. Misch serves on the Board of Trustees at the University of Detroit Mercy where he is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics. He is Adjunct Professor at the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry in the Department of Periodontics/Geriatrics and Adjunct Professor at the School of Engineering in the Department of Biomechanics, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was the Director of the Oral Implantology Residency Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine from 1989 to 1996. Dr. Misch has maintained a private practice restricted to implant surgery (bone grafting and implant placement) and related prosthetics for more than 30 years. He previously practiced Beverly Hills, Michigan.

Dr. Michael Gelb is a highly rated author and speaker on TMJ, sleep apnea, sleep disorders and chronic headache treatments.
