Philadelphia Magazine’s annual list of 50 Best Restaurants always sparks controversy in our food scene. Who’s in? Who’s out? What does “best” mean, anyway? We discuss it all in a riveting conversation with Philly Mag’s food editor, Kae Lani Palmisano. We've also got new music from our friends in Snacktime, AND something for you, loyal listener, to potentially win!

Plus This!

  • Eli brings his homegrown “rooftop juice” to share with the crew. It’s fire!

We have a huge announcement about the Philadelphia "Home Grown" Food and Music series that Delicious City is throwing in partnership with FCM Hospitality and that will be going on every Tuesday throughout the summer.

While both Eli and Sarah did a ton of eating at The James Beard Awards in Chicago this past week, there's literally nothing like some good old Philly homegrown delicious eats. Sure, other cities might have more restaurants, bigger restaurants, and maybe even some fancier restaurants, but the food being cooked here in Philadelphia is exciting like no other city can match!

06 Feb 2023Episode 34: Getting Dirty with Farmer Jawn, Supper Club winner announcement and a Bialy education01:45:15

It's a Super Bowl bound podcast where we can't help but get a little giddy, and our guest today had to seek out a sports bar in Costa Rica just to see the game! But, as you'll hear, it couldn't have turned out any better for her. Even though it's hard to focus on food right now with Eagles mania, somehow we managed to do it. It's called commitment, people!

So, between food and Eagles talk, we dig deep into the genesis of one of the coolest Philadelphia stories you'll ever hear of destiny intervening in someone's life and putting them on a path of passion and purpose, and how Farmer Jawn's founder, Christa Barfield, found her love for farming after she burned out from her career and booked a trip to Martinique on a whim.

Besides this incredibly inspiring story, here's what else we talked about:

  • The corner store dilemma and what it means to reconceptualize it
  • The evolution of Her Place Supper Club
  • Marisa's eye-opening experience at Roxanne's
  • The incredible and groundbreaking Honeysuckle Provisions
  • Delicious Haitian Pork Griot
  • Eating offals and why they're so damn delicious
  • A South Philly secret supper club
  • A brand new gelato shop in Fishtown from a gelato connoisseur
  • Why you need to go to Wilmington to eat: think smoked red cabbage
  • Eli travels to New Jersey for his best bite at one of the best restaurants in our region
  • Why you need to go to Southwark and order the duck
  • A brand new vegan and gluten-free bakery in South Philly
  • Why you need to run to Reading Terminal and eat Bialys
  • Each of our go-to bagel orders
  • An exciting dinner inside of a heated greenhouse that you are going to want to go to

  • Marisa admits to never seasoning a very important part of cooking pasta

16 Nov 2021Delicious City Philly Episode Five00:38:21
30 Dec 2022Episode 31: Reflecting on a Year Full of Best Bites, Milk Tubes & Supper Club Details Revealed00:50:34

New year’s resolutions aren’t easy to commit to, so we’re going to make it easy for you: commit to subscribing to the Delicious City Podcast, following us on Instagram & recommending us to three friends. It's simple, it'll make you feel great and there are no hidden fees.

Thank you to Ice Sculpture Philly for sponsoring the latest episode. They created the stunning centerpieces for the first Chef Radio + Delicious City Christmas Party.

On today’s episode, we chat about our resolutions for 2023 (or lack thereof!), bumping into old friends on the street, we meet Eli’s mom and learn about his top-secret Washington DC family.

A recap of the podcast holiday party comes with behind the scenes stories about Randy Rucker’s crab dip and Michael Ferrari’s caponata. Plus a collab between Huda and longtime DC supporters, Honeygrow. PA wines from WayVine you must try. Cheeses from Perrystead Dairy. We learn about Milk Tubes from Human Robot. And local cocktails from Dad’s Hat, Boardroom Spirits, Revivalists Gin, Kiki Vodka, New Liberty Distilling, and Five Saints Distilling. Plus Good Water, a new comer to the scene that you should know about.

Best Bites come from one of the multiple “7 Feasts” that happened over the holidays and Honeysuckle Provisions, an easy favorite. But what’s a year end episode without recapping a few highlights from 2022? Remember the Locally Grown Food & Music Series at Liberty Point? How about the year-long obsession with Cantina La Martina (have YOU been yet?!) Her Place. Fiorella. Waiting for new taco joints?! 2022 gave us a lot. 22 Jan 2024Episode 58: For the Love of Local Wine, BYO Pairing Ideas, and Plenty of Pop-Ups in Philly01:46:51

A glass of wine can elevate a meal from good to great with a single sip. Pair local eats with local drinks, and you’ve got a match made in foodie heaven. That’s what this episode of Delicious City is all about! The folks from Mural City Cellars join us in studio and quickly become our favorite guests ever when they crack open a bottle of wine for us that’s not even on bar shelves yet! No offense every other amazing guest we've ever had on here, but.....did you bring wine? Plus: a HUGE event announcement in Food News that podcast listeners can get early access to, so listen closely.

Here's what we talked about:

  • Nicholas Ducos and Francesca Galarus tell the stories of their culinary journeys and when they converged. They tell us how Nicholas fell in love with winemaking, and how Francesca’s hospitality and business acumen helped launch Mural City Cellars in Fishtown.
  • Making batches of wine in Francesca’s mom’s garage, and how they’re going to open a bar in a converted garage later this year. Full circle moment
  • Eli and Nicholas compare their experiences at the Culinary Institute of America, while Marisa and Francesca bond over growing up on the Main Line
  • Did you know that Pennsylvania is one of the top 5 grape producing states in the country? Another one in the top 5 is close to Eli’s heart
  • We taste the "Sauvi B" and all agree that it’s a winner. Eli gets into his obsession with fermentation, both with food and beverage
  • BYO in the Know: We took YOUR suggestions, dear listeners, from Instagram and paired your favorite restaurants with Mural City Cellars wines. Save these in a note on your phone, they’ll come in handy the next time you ask “What should we bring?”

10 Jan 2023Episode 32: Feeding Our Cravings with @FeedingTimeTV01:22:53

Philly Mag’s 50 Best Restaurants issue has arrived. Love it or hate it, the list serves as a pretty good resource for finding the top spots in the city, so naturally, we kickoff the show with a blind test, quizzing each other on how many we’ve been to.

The real surprise comes later in the show when a few of the random spots we mention as our favorites pop up in the Top 50. It’s nice to see how Philly Mag mixed a few gems into the list and really blew our minds.

Speaking of blowing minds, today’s guest is really good at that. Dave Wez, known in the metaverse as @FeedingTimeTV, has a high energy, adventurous, relatable, and very funny food enthusiast IG account that started as a fun cooking show and then turned into a series of videos showing off all the bars and restaurants that Dave himself wants you to discover.

Follow for his South Fellini wardrobe, stay for his instantly loveable Korean + Japanese + Polish + Italian personality.

In Best Bites," Eli found his perfect swordfish filet in South Philly. Dave is bringing back the crab rangoon, and Marisa discovered the ideal cheese plate.

Back to the 50 Best Restaurants Congrats to Her Place Supper Club! Geez, we want to say that 2022 is your year, but it looks like 2023 is going to top that! We go over the top 10, or 13, or so. This list is kind of like our Super Bowl.

Food news brings the demise of Streeteries, conveyor belt sushi, a deep South Philly fresh pasta joint, a baby ban, and… updates to Delicious City Supper Club. It sold out – quickly – so we added a second seating. That’s not all; we have a charity partner, Share Food Program. Executive Director, George Matysik, dropped by to enlighten us about this wonderful organization helping people across the region.

Oh, and Eli might go vegan? We’ll see.

31 Oct 2022Episode 28: Khoran Horn, Koozie Kulture, $10K Plant Based World Series Dog, Acai bowls, Frozen Grapes in Wine01:24:31

As easy as it would be to turn Delicious City into a sports talk show right now, we refuse to do so! That's because it is our sworn duty to bring you all the latest and greatest in the world of food and restaurants, not sports, right? Or, are the two inseparable at this incredible moment in time because Philadelphia is chock-full of fantastic sports and food energy, which just makes you want to eat more!

And in this week's World Series episode....

  • The polarizing flavors of fall - candy corn, PSL & eggnog
  • Marisa, blows our guest's mind when she turns the fellow pescatarian onto plant base hotdogs at Citizens Bank Park.
  • The expanding food neighborhoods in Philadelphia
  • Khoran's journey - Stripp'd Juice, BLVCK
  • Marisa & WMMR's Food Trucks and Fireworks
  • Somebody Feed Phil"s Philly episode
  • M. Knight's "Servant" Croquembouche
  • Khoran's perfect day of eating in Philly - don't miss it!
  • Black Tie & Sneakers masquerade
  • Will Smith's influence on Eli's rural upbringing
  • Marisa's newest list of great bars to watch the game

19 Aug 2024Ep. 77: Midnight Pasta with Natalia Lepore Hagan00:59:58

The only thing that could bring people together more than a big plate of pasta is learning to make the pasta by hand. Our guest today, Natalia Lepore Hagan, can teach you how to do just that at her Midnight Pasta classes - think less “cooking school” and more “fun-loving dinner party” - booze optional! We also talk about what’s in our refrigerators, how to make pasta while camping, and our favorite desserts in Philly.

19 Feb 2024Episode 60: Hoagie Hero, South Philly Stories and an Upcoming Beer & Pizza Happy Hour01:40:30

Hoagies are the fabric of Philadelphian society. They fuel our long days and late nights. They bring us together at the deli counter. Our orders show off our individuality: are you an extra hot peppers kinda guy, or a seeded roll only kinda gal? Our own Hoagie Hero (as voted by you, Delicious City listeners, in the Tasties awards) Jason Okdeh tells us how this special sandwich has put him on a path to success and allowed him to foster community around his shop, Farina Di Vita.

Plus!

  • Jae explains how he went from having a pasta pop-up to an award winning shop that sells fresh and tasty sandwiches, sauces and more in South Philly. He goes even further back to his upbringing, and the gang talks about all the trouble they got into as kids (and how they got away with it)
  • We debate seeded vs non-seeded rolls for hoagies (which do you prefer?) and East Coast Hoagies vs. West Coast Subs (you know which one is better)
  • The importance of community support: Jay was given a lot of love and opportunity when he was first starting his business, and now he wants to pay it forward by offering his space to anyone who wants to do a pop-up there
  • Shout out to Fox & Son in Reading Terminal Market. We were munching on their Valentines Corn Dog Bouquet throughout this episode
  • Best Bites include the “world’s best hot dog,” a haunted dinner, a private pop-up, and succulent shrimp. We also add some bonus bites from NJ and NYC, and surprise Eli with funnel cake for his birthday last week!
  • We announce a new Delicious City partner and a special happy hour event happening on March 11th at Paulie Gee’s
  • Food News: Pizza in Passyunk, good news for La Croix, and Dave is curating a wagyu cheesesteak pop-up on February 27th

10 Jun 2024Ep. 68: Savoring the Summer (with TWO Giveaways)01:15:22

Summer has arrived, which means al fresco dining, festivals everywhere you turn, and the weekly tradition of SIPS in Center City. Eli, Marisa and Dave dive into their warm weather favorites, debut a new segment, and have not one, but two tasty prizes that you could win.

00:00:00 Chewy vs. crunchy cookies: which team are you?

00:01:17 Dave is back! And no, he’s not moving to Newark. He’s happy to be back in Philly after a work trip back-to-back with a bachelor weekend (lots of Dirty Bananas were involved)

00:05:57 Gia Suraci, who has the most Philly accent ever (and we LOVE it), is here to roll out a summer tradition: SIPS in Center City! They’re celebrating 20 years of this summertime happy hour, with dozens of restaurants participating. New this year: CCD is offering a limited-edition beer made in partnership with Broad Street Brewing. Dave can’t wait to give this Mexican-style lager a try at Dilworth Park’s Air Grille Garden!

00:20:13 In It to Win It: In partnership with Center City District and SIPS, this week’s giveaway is a gift card to Village Whiskey. Marisa gives out the secret word that you’ll need to DM to @deliciouscitypodcast on Instagram for a chance to win.

00:29:50 Best Bites: Marisa’s tiki party, Dave’s family-style dinner that fused Indian and Mexican cuisine, and Eli has a rare out-of-state plate that’s at the top of his list

00:47:41 We debut a spinoff of Best Bites, because we have too much good food to keep it to one pick per person! Whatcha Been Eatin’ will cover all of the gang’s honorable mentions this week. Dave shares how to find the hidden gems at Southeast Asian Market, and Marisa flexes her Dunkle Dare championship reign

01:00:59 We want your feedback! Tell us what you think of the podcast via a quick survey. Everyone who fills it out will be entered to win a gift card to Philadelphia Oyster House. Find it HERE or in our Linktree and Instagram

01:06:30 Food Events + Pop-Up Run Down: a pescatarian dinner, a Juneteenth cookout, 90s night at the Please Touch Museum, and lots more!

21 Aug 2023Episode 48: A New Food Incubator, an Absentee Dad, and some Swordfish Schnitzel01:05:09

When "dad" is away, the kids will play! With Eli on a little summer vacation, Marisa and Dave take the reins of this episode of Delicious City. They welcome Chef Chad Rosenthal, who's launching an incubator project via The Lucky Well that's four mouthwatering concepts under one roof. It's a unique project that gives food entrepreneurs a chance to show Philly what they're made of.

The gang also covers:

  • How Chad's Lucky Well Incubator sounds like a crazy reality show
  • The FOMO you feel when you miss a food pop-up - and how the Lucky Well gives those pop-ups a space to really hone their craft
  • The Incu-Burger: smoked to perfection. Order it pink or no-pink, that's it
  • Chad names the brave astronauts who are taking part in the incubator, and what their culinary specialties are
  • Dave's sultry menu-reading voice
  • Looking like the narc at a rock show
  • The logistical challenges of eating BBQ: do you lick or not lick? (yes, it's what it sounds like)
  • Dave's Best Bite of the week may also be the best bite of his life

  • We learn what a** juice is (no, it's NOT what it sounds like)

13 Nov 2023Episode 53: Big-Time Bromances, Local Coffee Superstar, and Famous Peeps Etiquette01:48:22

Delicious City is buzzing over Rival Bros Coffee, and we’ve got co-founder Jon Adams on this episode to explain their approach to java and how it reflects the bold and authentic spirit of Philadelphia. We also talk about one of the hottest new dining experiences in the city, Enswell, and Jon and Eli get swept up in culinary history - the convo was so absorbing that we lost track of time and had to be kicked out of our studio.

Also on this episode:

  • Dave Wez is out this week, but a bromance blossoms between Eli and Jon, or maybe Eli is just jealous of Jon’s hair… who can say?
  • Marisa explains why she doesn’t have a coffee machine in her house, despite being a caffeine fiend
  • Jon explains the Rival Bros origin story, and takes us back to his early days as a chef, including his wild experience making “edible rocks” at a Michelin star restaurant in Spain
  • The gang discuss why chefs having FOH experience is key, as well as the benefits of cooking in a small space and the importance of gender diversity in the kitchen
  • Shorthand for food orders: is it a lost art?
  • Hot take: can you call yourself a chef if you’ve never run a restaurant?
  • Jon talks about his time at Snackbar, and the crew trade stories about a living legend in Philly, Pierre Robert. The WMMR ladies in the room guess what his favorite restaurants in the city are, and at the very end of this episode you’ll hear whose guess was right!
  • Best Bites: everybody loves Enswell, and not just because Jon is in the room - it’s legit. Other picks include a spot to elevate your lunch routine, pizza with perfect pepperoni cups, espresso soda and delicious dim sum
  • Weird stuff happens in restaurants, and Eli’s got a particularly saucy story from his time in NYC. Plus: proper etiquette for when you run into celebs while dining out
  • Food News: a doggie bar, a Bladerunner inspired ramen joint, and the country’s largest single-sponsor food drive is happening this week, Camp Out For Hunger!

21 Sep 2021Delicious City Philly Sizzle00:02:03

THE CHEF RADIO PODCAST and RADIOKISMET present the newest podcast from Chef Eli Kulp for your dining enjoyment with writer Sarah Maiellano and WMMR radio producer (Preston & Steve Show) Marisa Magnatta!

23 Jan 2023Episode 33: It's A Philly Thing, Meet the South Philly Folks Behind MAWN01:16:21

Meet Rachel and Phila Lorn, the South Philly born and bread owners of MAWN, the new Cambodian Noodle Bar. They are both products of the Philadelphia food service industry, it’s also where their love story began. This restaurant has been a dream of theirs for years, and it looks like we’re just weeks away from opening.

One of Philly’s “hottest” food experiences inspired flavors on the menu. The Southeast Asian Market was a staple in Phila’s youth, way before the internet found out about it. If you were blown away the first time you saw it, imagine not seeing it for a decade or so and then returning in 2022 to see how it's grown. That’s what happened when Rachel and Phila brought his Cambodian parents by last year.

What’s the correlation between opening a restaurant and having a baby – why does it happen at the same time for so many chefs?

The best bites come from a Delicious City regular (*cough Randy Rucker cough*), a sandwich shop new to Eli that he finally visited, and a highly anticipated wine and pasta bar. P.S. Marisa has tips for getting in without a reservation.

Great stories fill up Food News with Eagles themed snacks, a couple of openings, and a couple of retirements.

Sticking with the “It’s A Philly Thing” theme, we play What The Yelp, where Eli reads Yelp reviews and the rest of the crew has to guess which restaurant is being talked about.

And if you’re still reading, then you’ll learn that this podcast includes instructions on how to win tickets to Delicious City’s almost sold-out Supper Club. Tune in for the full details.

Enjoy the latest episode and HAPPY EATING!
