26 Mar 2016 | 143 CHAD EUBANKS - An Argument for High Fence Hunting, Timber Company Deer Leases, and Louisiana Public Hunting | 01:18:43
Chad Eubanks has spent a lifetime hunting in Louisiana, both on public and private leased timber company property. Chad's biggest pet peeve is when one hunter disrespects another. To avoid poachers and trespassers and those hunters that disrespect other hunters, Chad has turned his sights on high fence hunting. As many scream "high fence" on any big buck Facebook photo post, Chad has found sanctuary and a comfort in not what the fence keeps in, but what it keeps out. Chad discusses the pros and cons of high fence deer hunting in Missouri versus private leased land and public land hunting in Louisiana. On October 29th, 1965 Mel Johnson was hunting over a soy bean field not 20 minutes outside Peoria, Illinois. He shot with a bow and arrow the buck that has held the record for almost 50 years. Will that record ever be broken? We're not sure, but we tracked down Mel to get the real story and learn exactly what a world class whitetail archery hunter has to say about deer hunting after 81 years. Notepad required. 17 Feb 2019 | 271 Chuck Paddock- Game Cam Maniac, Entry Routes, Low Pressure - Open Season TV | 01:00:55
After 35 years of hunting and after burning out a camera man or two, there's no sign of Chuck Paddock hunting less. Chuck is a busy business man and is part owner of Open Season TV (you may remember our interview on Epi 200 with Chuck's partner James Blakenbeckler). Chuck doesn't consider the work surrounding Open Season actual work as it's not his how he makes his living. But he sure does love to hunt and he enjoys bringing his hunts to life for others through video. Chuck's big things are low pressure, careful entry and exit routes, and an abundant use of game cameras. We go inside hunting the big bucks of Ohio and on a South African safari hunt with Steph as we explore the similarities and differences between each. Granted, hunting the Black Death isn't exactly like hunting a monster whitetail but there are techniques that apply to each. 01 Jul 2017 | 206 ADAM HAYS III - 200" Bucks & Where to Find Them, Read the Moon | 01:19:36
Please Nominate Us Podcast Awards Adam Hays III says that to kill a 200" buck, you must surgically remove them from the face of the earth. This means planning, lots of planning. The first step is to actually hunt where a big deer lives. It's a simple strategy, but an essential one. Step two through the kill shot is a bit more complex. Using the Red Moon phases of a product he created called the Moon Guide, Adam uses the high likelihood daylight deer movement days to plan his hunt in conjunction with a mental thesis of the buck he pursues. Does Adam hunt the days when the Red Moon isn't present? You bet. He says they are perhaps more important than the days of the kill hunt - these are what he refers to as observation hunts. Adam is also a fan of hunting the wind to the bucks advantage, hunting outside in, and learning which tree will become the kill tree. Adam explains all these strategies in more detail during the interview. Notebook required. 21 Apr 2019 | 275 Gordon Whittington - The Emerging 300" | 01:25:34
There have been far more 300" non-typical bucks killed since the early 2000s than ever documented before the year 2000. So what gives? Gordon Whittington, the Editor in Chief of North American Whitetail joins us for a second time to explore just that. Is it genetics, is it food, what can history tell us from hundreds of years ago, what about the big deer that came in the decades before the new millennium? We discuss all this in detail and dig deep into the Luke Brewster buck story, the monster Illinois buck from 2018, currently featured in North American Whitetail Magazine. 29 Sep 2019 | 285 Cameran Derefield - Last Minute Velvet Bucks and Thermals | 01:14:54
It's a game of chess according to Cameran Derefield. There's a king and a pawn. Which is which, welp, that's to be determined at the end of the deer season. Studying annual journals about buck behavior and with heavy game camera monitoring, Cameran believes that he can see the target buck's next move and plan accordingly. It's not instant success, but it is methodical and persistent and generally speaking, Cameran is the one calling checkmate. Cameran shares with us all his deer hunting techniques, styles and strategies. 01 Apr 2017 | 193 NICK PERCY - Killer Spring Food Plots, Reap What You Sow | 01:11:22
Nick Percy is joining us once again, but this time with a different take on food plots. The last time that we spoke with Nick was in June 2016 found here: www.BigBuckRegistry.com/killerfoodplots , when our focus was on food plots for the fall. Now, as the snow melts away in the Northern Zone, we learn from Nick that there are several kinds of seeds that we can throw atop frost ridden soils and let mother nature take over by working the seeds into the soil naturally. There's a point to this. As deer come out of their food scare winter habitats (especially in the northern United States), having a rich crop of green protein and nutrients will get the herd back into shape quickly as the rest of the world follows suit down in the weeks to come. But, there are soil considerations to consider too, like ph, soil temps, and minerals. Nick takes us through his bag of tricks for early spring food plot preparation. 02 Apr 2016 | 144 MICHAEL PITTS - Michael Waddell's Mentor, Fire Fighter, Master Bowman, Realtree and Part-Time Comedian | 01:31:32
You might have seen Realtree’s video of Michael Pitts asking some pretty overly straight forward questions of Michael Waddell, Nick Mundt, and Travis T-Bone Turner from this year’s ATA event. He is decidedly the thorn in Michael Waddell’s side and that one person by which no celebrity hunter wants to be interviewed. So, we tracked him down to find out who the real Michael Pitts is - turns out he’s an master bowman and bow technician, a full time fire fighter, a Realtree Prostaff, and now, part-time comedian. Michael walks us through his character, and often breaks into character as he details his elite hunter training facility that his has put together for his students. 17 Dec 2016 | 178 KRYSTLE MAHONEY & TAYLOR HANCE - Whitetail Widow Makers, West Monroe, Louisiana | 01:50:22
When you think of West Monroe, Louisiana and hunting, you would typically think about a cast of duck hunters with long beards and a popular mainstream television show. Turns out, there's more going on in West Monroe than we thought. Meet Krystle Mahoney and Taylor Hance, otherwise know as the Whitetail Widow Makers. They work regular jobs like most of us, but when the work is done, they are hitting the woods of Louisiana for some good old fashion deer hunting. Originally from Texas, Taylor has made a lifetime of deer hunting with friends and family. Taylor turned Krystle onto hunting and she's been hooked ever since. We learn about how they go about deer hunting the variety of terrain that Louisiana has to offer, what hunting means to each of them, how they decided to turn deer hunting into a social media craze, discovering just the right treestand for men and women, 8 Point Squirrels, and why hunting is so much more than just the hunt itself. 18 Nov 2017 | 226 MATT ROSS - QDMA, Select Tree Cutting for Deer Habitat, Balancing the Herd | 01:48:41
We wanted to know more about select tree cutting for deer habitat so we turned to our friend from the Quality Deer Management Association, Matt Ross. The conversation became much more than a tree cutting exercise, as we explored the history of the QDMA, deer herd balance, proper doe to buck ratios, quantitative herd analysis, deer plants and overall deer habitat. Matt Ross is certified wildlife biologist and licensed forester. He received his bachelor's in wildlife conservation from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and his master's in wildlife management from the University of New Hampshire. Before joining the QDMA staff, Matt worked for a natural resource consulting firm in southern New Hampshire, and he was a QDMA volunteer and Branch officer and is now QDMA's Assistant Director of Conservation. 03 Feb 2018 | 237 WAYNE and SHAUNA BOGARDUS - Killing the Fall & Suspension Trauma - Treestand Wingman | 01:19:02
Treestand safety is a hot topic. And it should be. Studies show that treestand accidents are by far the leader in serious injury or death to a hunter. There have been some major advancements in safety though the years compared to the days when the hunter would limb climb a tree into a wooden built treestands. The harness has also come a long way since the early days, the attachment straps aren't as limiting, devices like the Life Line now keep us attached to the tree, but suspension trauma, should you slip, is still a major concern. Wayne Borgardus has invented a device that is a game changer and address all these issues. The device is lightweight, attaches easily to the tree or to a Life Line, supports a hunter of the larger or smaller variety, works with any harness, can be used over and over, is affordable, and will slowly and safely drop you to the ground should fall. Here's the story of the Treestand Wingman. 02 Aug 2014 | 058 JACKIE BUSHMAN - Buckmasters | 01:02:12
When the deer hunting industry as we know it today was in it's infancy, there were a few visionaries that embraced the cutting edge of the day (cable television) and ran with it. Jackie Bushman was one of those visionaries. From a professional tennis career to a professional hunting television career, Jackie Bushman helped to form the deer hunting industry. We might call him the "Godfather" of Deer Hunting. He started out with a crazy idea of gathering members for his organization by putting forms in a prominent deer hunting magazine in the 80s and grew that idea into BUCKMASTERS! Buckmasters is one of the most recognized organizations in the hunting industry today. Jackie is always on the cutting edge. We cover the old days, the good days, the not-so-good days, and the Buckmaster's plan for the future. From magazine to tv show to social media, Jackie Bushman tells the entire Buckmaster story in this exclusive podcast interview. 28 Jan 2017 | 184 DR DAVE SAMUEL - Writer, Professor, Deer Hunter, Bow Hunting Hall of Fame | 01:25:08
Dr Dave Samuel spent a 30 year career as a wildlife management professor at West Virginia University. Dr Dave said that he truly enjoyed his work there and loved new interns because he always had another deer study ready to go. However, Dave's journey goes well beyond a life of academia. Dave is an accomplished writer and journalist for Bowhunter Magazine, Whitetail Journal, and Bowhunting.net. He's also won several lifetime achievement awards from the National Bowhunter Education Foundation, QDMA, and Whitetails Unlimited. He's also been inducted into the Bowhunter and Archery Hall's of Fame. Not too shabby a resume. Oh, and did we mention that he's one heck of a good deer hunter? It probably goes without saying. Dave struggles a bit with the physical aspects of deer hunting these days after suffering from a surgery gone bad where a surgeon accidentally severed the nerve to his diaphragm. But that doesn't stop Dave. He still goes hunting. We touch on several different topics in this episode and dig deep into Dave's strategies for killing big whitetail with a bow and arrow. 15 Apr 2017 | 195 LAURA EAKIN - The Hunting Widow Podcast | 01:32:09
When the leafs start to change color each fall, and the drive to deer hunt all day reaches its peak, the tune of the "hunting widow" is amplified across the country. Not to exclude the other hunting seasons, but deer hunting seems to take the brunt of this near syndromatic phenomenon. Laura Eakin, the wife of a hardcore deer and elk hunter, once fell victim to this situation. And, in an effort to pseudo-retaliate against this status quo, Laura started a podcast known as The Hunting Widow Podcast. It started as a project where Laura planned to gather her hunting widow friends and verbally express their disdain for the situation. That was the intent, but what actually happened was something completely different. Instead of forming a quasi support group laced with microphones, Laura found herself interviewing lady hunters from across the country, beginning a life of hunting for herself, and has formed what is arguably the only lady-hunter focused podcast in the iTunes catalog. Laura goes into detail about why she started the show, how it changed her perspective on hunting altogether, and how she feels her show contributes to getting more women into the field. Jim Shockey, now 58 years young, has made a career of hunting for over 30 years now. Most would say he is one of most recognized and influential hunters of our time. Eva, his daughter, now 28 years old, has been following in Jim's footsteps but is, arguably, more recognized than Jim considering the number of Eva's social media followers. Eva has now entered into a new phase of her hunting career and life as she has broken away from the nest. Jim's start was far more humble than you might think- hunting was a means to food on the table, nothing more, and his deer camp as a child was a mobile home park he called home. Jim and Eva have a great camaraderie and cantor and we hear it all as we discuss their life journey. 02 Sep 2017 | 215 CURT GEIER - Working Class Bowhunter and Billy Joe Lunch Bucket | 01:20:37
"...for Billy Joe Lunch Bucket, the working man like me an you"- That's the phrase that embodies the cast of the podcast, Working Class Bowhunter. One day Curt Geier turned in his BMX bicycle for a compound bow and the rest is now actively in the podcast history books. Curt heads up the podcast and has created a remarkable brand and cast. Their show is described as unscripted, fun, and casual, and all about the blue collar bow hunter. We've been a fan since day one, and we finally put this interview together with Curt. It's been a long time coming. OUR SPONSORS: Advanced Treestands, Covert Scouting Cameras, Horny Buck Seed Company, Morse's Sporting Goods, Strut Zone NWTF DEER NEWS:

19 Nov 2016 | 174 SAM UBL - Keep the Deer Guessing, Ground Hunting the Thick Stuff, The Importance of Fresh Sign | 01:54:17
There was actually a time when Sam Ubl wasn't allowed to go deer hunting. That was when he was eleven and the state of Wisconsin's hunting regulations had a minimum age requirement of twelve. It drove him nuts. All he wanted to do was hunt. Once he turned twelve, that moratorium was over forever, unless of course he didn't make the grades. Sam's dad was stickler for a minimum grade requirements before heading to the family's Wisconsin deer camp. But it's been a long time since someone told him that he couldn't go deer hunting and Sam takes advantage of every minute that he's in the field. The majority of Sam's deer hunts consist of hunting on the ground, with a bow and arrow, and in the thickest of thick places that are almost impossible to reach. Most hunters won't go there. But for Sam, he wouldn't do it any other way. Sam tells us all about his adventures with Whitetail Adrenaline, Wisconsin Whitetail Pursuit, hunting without camo, and he tells us why he believes scent control is overrated. 09 Jul 2016 | 156 JEREMY BALANTINE & JOHNNY BROWN - In Pursuit 365 Deer Hunting the Northeast, Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Mid-West | 01:45:55
It all started with a deer hunt and a camera. At age 14, who thinks to video record their hunts? Jeremy Ballantine did just that and now he owns and operates a hunting videography company after some inspiration from Tom Blais, a great northeast videographer in his own right. Based in Vermont, In Pursuit 365 is comprised of a core group, specifically Jeremy and his hardcore hunting partner from New Hampshire, Johnny Brown. Each have their own techniques that they engage in, but one thing is certain, each love the pursuit of the hunt and everything it teaches. Both openly admit that hunting the big mountains of the west is their preferred setting, but home is New England. We sit down with Jeremy and Johnny in our first ever outdoor recording studio surrounded by the woods, old license plates, and European skulls mounts. Once again we dissect once the habits of world class deer hunters, this time it’s about deer hunting in New England and a little mid-west and big mountain of the west). 15 Oct 2020 | 299 Ted Bright - Slinging It | 01:14:16
This weeks show is an interview with Ted Bright. Ted is as you might expect a diehard deer hunter who likes prefers the a mobile hunt over a fixed stand. Ted uses a sling or harness to maneuver from tree to tree based on when and where he's finding active big buck sign. Ted is also an archer and seems to prefer this over anything. Something has "clicked" for Ted and says that he just seems to be in tune with finding hunting opportunity and capitalizing on those more than he's ever done before. We go over Ted's approach, hunts from previous years, shooting from muscle memory, and the techniques that he uses to identify a good spot to hunt and how to gain landowner permission. When I first received an email from Ronnie Strickland, I wasn't sure, but I thought, could this be Ronnie Cuz Strickland sending in fan mail to our podcast? Turns out it was Cuz. Cuz has been around the outdoor industry scene for quite some time now. You may remember the television show Mossy Oak's Hunting the Country back in the 90s. I was a much a fan of that show back then as Cuz is a fan of this podcast today. Cuz was one of the first employees of Mossy Oak when he joined the team back in 1987 and worked with Toxey Haas to develop the Media Production Department. Today he serves Mossy Oak as Senior Vice President of Media Services and Cuz still maintains a hands-on, through-the-viewfinder approach to outdoor television production, spending more than 100 days afield each year. He has written several books, was the National Wild Turkey Federation's Communicator of the Year in 2010, and is a lifetime member of the NRA and numerous conservation organizations. Picture if you can traveling to a remote area, being stripped of all your clothing, meeting a complete stranger (also naked), and being left to fend for yourselves in the raw elements of the forest or jungle. Could you do it? This is a real scenario for Laura Zerra, one of the original cast members of the Discovery Channel's Naked and Afraid. We first met Laura at a dinner table in Las Vegas and turns out there's much more to Laura than being a reality television star. As you might suspect Laura is full of life. She is a survivalist and a hunter. In this episode we learn quite a bit about the elements of survival, tips on surviving in the wilderness, sleeping in coyote dens, what tarantulas taste like, and how to learn from the animals you hunt, and why Laura developed a style of hunting called persistence hunting. 07 Oct 2017 | 220 JOHN LOUK - The TMA, More Than a Sticker - Tree Stand Safety | 01:20:39
If you’ve shopped for a tree stand between 1996 and now, you may have noticed a sticker on the box or on the tree stand with the three initials, TMA - the Treestand Manufacturer's Association. This sticker seems to be attached to everything we buy relative to climbing a tree these days, but what the heck does in mean? Climbing a tree prior to 1996 really was all that saf and certainly there was no accountability regarding tree stand industry standards. In a room, in a voluntary meeting at a trade show in Atlanta, Georgia in 1995, a group of treestand manufacturers gathered to build a new set of standards specific to a niche group of products that only a niche group of people understand, called treestands. It wasn’t as smooth as you might think, but it certainly changed the industry forever, made it safer, and ultimately more enjoyable and effective for the hunter. That TMA sticker, it means a heck of a lot more than meets the eye. OUR SPONSORS: Covert Scouting Cameras, Morse's Sporting Goods, BIG BUCK MERCH DEER NEWS:

25 Feb 2017 | 188 JASON OBERMILLER & ERIC FITZGERALD - What are My Deer Missing? Deer Biology, Agronomy, Rackology | 01:44:54
Agronomy is a noun. It means the science of soil management and crop production. Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, identification and taxonomy. When an agronomist and a biologist get together to think up what deer really need to survive and flourish, look out, the brain waves might be radioactive. Stand too close and you will learn lots about proper whitetail nutrition. Jason Obermiller, a teacher and taxidermist with a Master's Degree in Biology, and Eric Fitzgerald, a full time agronomist, teamed up to develop what might be the deer supplement industry's most thought out, most well designed deer supplement on the market today. Jason's thesis in college focused on a new way quickly age younger deer and soon after focused further studies on deer supplements currently on the market. Jason can also tell you plenty about the health of a whitetail based on the feel of a antler (he's examined many as a taxidermist). Eric can read a soil report and tell you exactly what you need to make crops grow to their fullest potential. Jason and Eric dive deep in this show explore many aspects of what a whitetail needs for complete nourishment in a herd and explain what you can and shouldn't do to help the overall health of the deer in your specific area. When you meet Heather Shepherd for the first time, you'll be hard pressed to know that you are face to face with a hardcore hunting machine. Her modesty, quiet demeanor, and lack of desire to be in the spotlight, will leave you guessing. Unless you do ask, you wouldn't know that Heather is in line to be the President of North Carolina's Dixie Deer Classic, or that she holds a North Carolina state record for black bear kill, or that she is a crack shot - frequently killing game at 500 yards or more, and that she recent killed an alligator with her knife. What? Yes, true story. We caught up with Heather recently at SHOT Show, Las Vegas and we were psyched when she said yes to joining us on the podcast. Heather is the real deal. 24 Dec 2016 | 179 KEN JORGENSEN - The Origins & History of Ruger, Wind & the Long Shot, Finding that Proper Load | 01:25:31
As far as gun manufacturing goes, Ruger is a relatively young company. The principles that William Ruger founded the company upon in 1949 still exist today, deep within the Ruger culture. Ken Jorgensen knows this first hand as Ruger's Media Relations Director. The Sturm, Ruger Company was founded on a few fundamental principles which include concepts like: a rifle should not cost more than a mans standard week's pay, you shouldn't cash a customer's check until the product is ready to ship, a company shouldn't borrower money, and that a gun companies success is based on it's ability to innovate and give the gun owner a reason to buy a new gun. Ruger is alive and well and Ken shares his knowledge of the history of the company, how he learned to read the wind for long 600+ yard shots, and how he goes about finding the right load for a new gun. Deer hunting the vastness inside the "Blue Line" of New York's 6 million acre Adirondack Mountain range is no joke. It consumes hunters, both literally and metaphorically. Those with poor navigational skills should think twice about hunting these mountains, but to Todd Mead, is all second nature. Todd has spent a lifetime hunting this tremendous forest where disappearing deep into the woods for days to hunt the back country bucks is no big deal. Todd's pack is loaded with gear, but perhaps the most important piece is his life saving diabetes kit: a must have for a big woods hunters with Type I diabetes. Todd shares his stories with us as he uses his pen to capture a lifetime of hunting in the Adirondack Mountains. Jim Keller's Deer News:

Rodney is well spoken and can speak intelligently on the hunter's hot topics of today. But it doesn't end there. Rodney is a steward of the woods, has top notch navigation skills as you might expect, is a professional taxidermist of 32 years, and is the chief hunter's safety instructor and safety officer in Vermont. 20 Jan 2018 | 235 The 2018 New England Deer Summit - Dean Vanier, Rodney Elmer, Jim Gallagher, Todd Mead, Neil Pendleton, Bobby Sholan | 02:18:16
When asked to be the Master of Ceremonies at a Deer Summit, you say "heck yes"! Fred Allard, Director of the Rockingham Fishing and Hunting Expo, threw out the idea. On a cold January 2018 day in New Hampshire our own Jay Scott gathered along with Neil Pendleton, Todd Mead, Bobby Sholan, Rodney Elmer, Jim Gallagher, and Dean Vanier to discuss many concepts surrounding deer and deer hunting. Amongst the concepts and questions for the panelists were:
OUR SPONSORS: The Treestand Wingman, Covert Scouting Cameras, Horny Buck Seed Company, The Enforcer, Morse's Sporting Goods, Strut Zone NWT Northwoods Common Scents, BIG BUCK MERCH
HERE ARE THE PANELISTS Neil Pendleton Neil, a resident of New Hampshire, has 24 years of hunting experience and has hunted in four different states, including New Hampshire, Ohio, Massachusetts, and his home state of Maine. Neil believes persistence and passion are the key factors that contribute to his success. Neil currently has five collective entries in the New Hampshire and Maine Trophy/Big Buck Clubs. Of the five entries, three were with a bow, one with a rifle, and most recently, in 2017, with a muzzleloader. In 2015, Neil arrowed the buck of a lifetime – a buck he hunted for 1,490 days, spanning 5 seasons. Neil was a featured guest on Episode 175 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast. Todd Mead Todd was introduced into hunting in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. After years of hunting success in the big mountains, he decided to venture to public lands across the country to see if he could locate and take big bucks in different areas across many states. He hunts primarily with archery equipment outside of his home state, but uses a rifle while in the Adirondacks. Todd was a featured guest on Episode 130 of the Big Buck Registry Deer Hunt Podcast. Todd is also an outdoor writer and author of 3 books about whitetail deer hunting. Bobby Sholan Bobby was born and raised in the woods of northern Vermont. He has successfully hunted whitetail deer for 23 years now, while bow hunting for whitetail for 20 of those years. He has hunting experience in several states including VT, NH , ME , MA , PA , Ohio and Ontario. Bobby uses trail cameras to target the biggest deer in an area and uses other tools including maps and year round scouting. Bobby adapts to the seasons and changing weather and although has killed more deer with archery, he is able to track in snow and setup on pitch points to ambush an unsuspecting bucks. Rodney Elmer Rodney is a professional taxidermist of 32 years and owner of Mountain Deer Taxidermy. In addition to being a life long deer hunter, he is a chief hunter’s safety instructor and range officer in his home state of Vermont. As an outdoor educator of many years his straight- forward, make-it-work hunting style has earned him many big New England bucks. His rising YouTube channel focuses on common sense, family hunting experiences, love of the natural world and outdoor education mixed with humor. Jim Gallagher Jim lives in Methuen, MA. He shot his first deer with a bow in Vermont when he was 14. Jim’s father, unable to walk due to complications with MS, would drive Jim to Vermont every weekend, and wait in the car while Jim hunted. For the passion and love of the sport Jim taught himself how to hunt efficiently and successfully, and to date has harvested 191 deer with a bow. Jim has spent a lifetime testing, developing and creating an educational bow hunting DVD of his favorite secrets and techniques to help bring others many years of success in hunting whitetails. Dean Vanier Dean has over 40 years of experience hunting the New England woods and 25 years in the Deer Hunting Industry. Dean endlessly shares his wealth of knowledge and sure-fire hunting techniques in his seminars including how to use deer scent lures to defeat a whitetail’s defense mechanisms, how deer responded to the 3 phases of the rut, how to anticipate where deer will be during these phases, and how bring deer to you. Dean hunts using deer calls, mock scrapes, and deer lures, specifically with his own brand of deer scents called Northwoods Common Scents. Dean insists that the future of hunting depends greatly on youth of today and it is our responsibility to pass on this great tradition. 27 Sep 2014 | 066 Hunting Down Under with Zach Shaggy Slattery | Bow Hunting Australia | 01:06:39
Be forewarned, this show is on the edge and may put you in your uncomfortable zone! We go bow hunting down under with Zach Shaggy Slattery a native of Australia. There are many differences in hunting style and species between the US/Canada and Australia, but there are also some striking similarties. Zach takes us into the Australian bush where he and his mates routinely hunt goat, hogs, and deer. And, there are other feral species that are wide open for hunting in Australia that we would think as odd, but it's just a standard way of life for the hunter Down Under. There are so many feral species running wild and of such extreme abundance in Australia that there are no hunting seasons for these feral species. You can hunt all year round. However, most indigenous species are not hunted, with a few exceptions like Kangaroo. Goat? You bet. Deer? Ofcourse, many difference species of deer. Hogs? Yes. Camel? Unhuh. Donkey? Yep, and from helicopters. Cats? No joke. This show will amaze you. Be prepared for some culture shock! Shaggy shares all and takes us hunting down under. 05 Nov 2016 | 172 BOB DUMONG - Learning the Nuances of Deer Management and A Free Fall Treestand Nightmare | 02:01:15
Fear isn't a factor. It never was. And probably never will. Now there is respect. Respect for how quickly life can flash before you when a simple tiedown strap is overlooked. Bob Dumong now respects every bit of treestand safety after falling 20' to the ground in a nightmare hunt when a strap let go causing Bob's climbing sticks to break away from the tree (seconds before stepping onto his platform). Bob says he now has great respect for treestand safety despite his still fearless mentality. Bob found himself in a new deer land, with new deer rules, in an area with a deer population that dwarfs the state's population where he learned to deer hunt. Yes, the deer hunting in North Carolina is much different than the deer hunting in New Hampshire. Since moving to North Carolina, Bob has taken a deep interest in deer management on the farms near to his home and has even guided many a hog hunter. Bob describes what he's learned about game management since moving to North Carolina, gives us a detailed recall of his fall from the treestand, and shares how he's changed his approach to treestand safety. 11 Apr 2015 | 094 Hillbilly Weatherman: Deer Hunting with a Viral Weathercaster - Adam Evans | 01:22:03
If you haven't heard of the Hillbilly Weatherman by now after the winter we just endured, then you either live in a cave (not a bad thing) or you live in an area that didn't see a flake of snow. Many northerners would kill for either scenario. Adam Evans is the Hillbilly Weatherman and he tells the weathercast like most probably think it. And, turns out, Adam is a really really good deer hunter. So much so that when we pitched him the idea of being a guest he said, "I LIVE FOR DEER HUNTING". Our kind of crowd... 10 Jun 2017 | 203 KALOBE MILLER - Trial & Error, Just One Wall Hanger, and Hunter Patterns | 01:11:55
Kalobe Miller is an accomplished deer hunter out of Pennsylvania, and without a hunting mentor to turn to, he learned to deer hunt through trial and error. One such lesson: Kalobe says that that the hunting pressure in his area is so high that learning to pattern the hunter is just as important as learning the pattern the deer. His goal is to shoot and kill one good mature buck each season. And to do this, Kalobe likes a good clean hunt. A clean hunt to Kalobe is when everything is in sync- the wind, the timing, the gear placement, your walk to the stand, right down to the noises you made getting in and out. Using game cameras, he starts his observations in May and as he says, he likes to stick with 'em. What this means is that Kalobe likes to find out how they go from food source to food source, sometimes up to 8 miles of observation. Kalobe says the answers are there if you do your homework and he prefers a healthy dose of black face paint. Granted, it might mean that you will have a visual of your vehicle from your tree stand and will need avoid a jogger or two, but big deer live and thrive in urban areas too. With the right set up, tactics, awareness, proficiency testing, and tags you too could take a monster buck not far from downtown. Doug Kostreva doesn't get much sleep. A typical day starts at 4AM and doesn't end until after 9pm. Doug doesn't mind though. As a multi-generational farmer, Doug never stops thinking about how to make stuff grow better. If Doug isn't filling an order for a hunter eager to get their food plot off the ground, he's giving someone advice on how to make the best food plot of their life. As Doug says, you want to plant far enough ahead to give your plants maximum growth at the very moment you step into your treestand. This means planting in August to give the deer a buffet of greens to devour in October and November. Doug takes this stuff seriously and spends hours crafting the next best seed blend combination for various environments. We pick Doug's brain about everything from choosing a plot site, to weed killer, to fertilizer, to tonnage, to soil testing, nitrogen and much more. With the help of Jason Brown, Chris and Casey have created what is arguably one of the best concepts on hunting television. 30 Sep 2018 | 261 Deer Movement Prediction - DeerCast - Drury Outdoors - Hunt Tech Part I | 01:33:06
In the first part of our 6 Part Series of Hunt Tech, where we explore the technology that has embedded itself in our hunting lives, we dive deep into a new hunting app called DeerCast by Drury Outdoors. For a very long time deer hunters have been trying to determine when deer move, what conditions make for a worthy deer hunt, and when should we as deer hunters capitalize on those factors. We've spent hours and hours studying solunar charts, weather maps for pressure and cold fronts, and peak estrus diagrams for the areas that we hunt. It can be a daunting task to put that all together. The Drurys- Mark, Terry, Matt, and Taylor have condensed all this information into one app for iOS and Android call Deercast to determine the best times to hunt in your area during each phase of the Drury 13 Phases of hunting. Will it be effective? Only time will tell, but undoubtedly technology in the deer hunting world, like it or not, is here to stay. So we thought we should explore in detail some of these tech advancements. Stay tuned for our next episode where we explore action cameras with the likes of Tactacam. 13 Aug 2016 | 161 JIM KINSEY - Camera Man Jimmy, Making Music, Filming Endlessly, and Hunting the Big Sky Country | 01:07:45
It was love at first kill. Jim Kinsey, former US Marine helicopter mechanic, writer, film maker, and hard core deer hunter, met Jana Waller (one of our favorite predators on the planet) in a ground blind on a turkey hunt. Does it get any better than that? Now, Jim spends much of his time behind the camera handling the filming and editing for the show Skull Bound on the Sportsman's Channel. Jim writes for various journals, the television show, and is now writing music for Nashville. Jim says despite the jump from medium to medium, story telling is story telling (and he's good at in by the way...). We go behind the scenes with Jim and find out what his life is really like, how he got there, and where he's going. And he tells one heck of a good deer story, so stay tuned it! 10 Sep 2016 | 165 LEE & TIFFANY LAKOSKY - Mach 10, Velvet Bucks, Standing Corn Ground Blinds, and Tree Hinge Tactics | 01:49:57
Sure, having your first baby might change things a bit, but the corn still needs to grow, the fields need to be seeded, the trees need to be cut, and life going any slower than Mach 10 just wouldn't seem normal. That's how Lee and Tiffany, our guests from Episode 050, like it. Tiffany has pulled back just a bit to take care of their son, but both Lee and Tiffany enjoy a fast paced country life. They say that when they're not on the road, they're home bodies and you'll never find them at a coffee shop (Lee doesn't drink coffee, and doesn't need to). Lee says that all the work is done by September on his endless acreage of farmed prime hunting land. In fact, Lee is so meticulous about created amazing deer habitat that his neighbors should thank him. We go deep with Lee and Tiffany on this show and talk everything from parenting, to hunting standing corn, to how to sneak into a field without detection, to hinge cutting trees for habitat, to building watering holes. Get your notebooks out. OUR SPONSORS: Morse's Sporting Goods www.MorseSportingGoods.com DEER NEWS:
