30 Aug 2022How to get ready for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (and introducing Don Marshall!)00:22:13

I’m pleased to announce that Don Marshall will be joining me as my new co-host on the Decoding TV podcast to recap The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power! 05 Nov 2022The Crown: Season 4 Lookback and Season 5 Preview01:13:02

Decoding TV is kicking off our coverage of The Crown today! In this episode, David Chen and his wife @joyonapping offer their overall thoughts on the show, why it continues to be compelling after all these years, and what the next seasons might have in store.

Programming Note: While Decoding TV will cover Season 5 of The Crown, we’re still working out the details of our coverage. At the very least, we can promise there will be one more Decoding TV podcast episode discussing season 5 but we may or may not have weekly coverage given that the show will be released binge-style on Netflix beginning November 9th. Stay tuned to Decoding TV for more details.

The Crown is returning to Netflix on November 9th for its fifth and penultimate season. Its last season drew attention for its depiction of Princess Diana and her marriage to Charles - an event that even many millennials such as myself remember in their lifetimes. Season five promises to begin following that story to its horrifying conclusion (the show currently plans to end with season six).

The production of The Crown is estimated to cost over $100 million per season, making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made. It’s also one of the most critically acclaimed: The Crown has been nominated for hundreds of awards since its premiere in 2017, including Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys and Best Television Drama at the Golden Globes. In 2021, it won all seven drama categories at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, becoming the first show to ever do so.

Listen to this episode to hear David and Joy discuss where we left off with every plotline from season four and what topics we think season five will probably tackle.

This bonus episode is free but you can get all our bonus episodes by becoming a paid subscriber at DecodingTV.com!

We’re trying something new with Decoding TV this season. In the past when we’ve done bonus episodes, they’ve typically analyzed the pre-existing materials for a TV show (e.g. House of the Dragon, The Last of Us). Since Succession is original IP, it demands a different approach.

As such, I’ve invited David Cho to join me to do a few bonus episodes throughout the season. David Cho is a media veteran and has previously been the publisher of sites such as Grantland, FiveThirtyEight, and The Awl. His expertise is highly valued by media companies, celebrities, and global brands, and I’m pleased he’s sharing it with us here.

[David and I also co-hosts an ongoing podcast on my personal Patreon page, Dave on Dave, in which he critiques and provides feedback on my online work.]

In this bonus episode, we spoil and discuss Succession S4E01 - The Munsters, including how realistic the dealmaking was this episode, why it is that the Roys don’t really wear coats, and how rich people have feelings too.

07 Apr 2023This Week In Streaming: Beef Eps 1-200:59:43

Hey Decoding TV folks! David Chen here with an exciting announcement.

For the past year, Decoding TV has been doing weekly deep dives into different TV shows and streaming shows with some of the best writers and commentators on the internet. But while the weekly recap model works really well for a bunch of shows like The Last of UsWestworld, and Succession, it takes a lot of time and commitment to cover a show that way and if we confined ourselves only to this model, there would just be a bunch of shows that Decoding TV wouldn’t cover.

That’s why I’m so pleased to announce a new show, which I’m calling This Week In Streaming, which will cover the latest and greatest in what’s available on streaming platforms. The idea is that every week, in addition to any weekly recaps going on at Decoding TV, we will cover one of the most interesting, thought-provoking, and/or critically acclaimed shows on TV. We won’t recap every single episode of these TV shows. Instead:

  • We will make a podcast discussing the first episode or two of the TV show
  • Later, we will record another podcast discussing the last episode of the TV show and reflect on the season as a whole

Over the course of the next few weeks, we will cover Beef on Netflix, Barry on HBO, Dead Ringers on Amazon Prime. As just mentioned, we’ll cover the first eps of these shows (with no spoilers for the rest of the show), and then have a season-ending discussion in a separate episode. This Week In Streaming will appear on the Decoding TV podcast feed so if you’re listening to us on a podcast app, you don’t need to do anything else to get future episodes.

I am enormously grateful to Siddhant Adlakha for joining me for this initial batch of episodes to kick this off. Siddhant will be joining me to cover Beef, Barry, and Dead Ringers. Siddhant will always be part of the Decoding TV family but as time goes on, we may rotate different and exciting voices in and out of the co-host chair.

Will This Week In Streaming cover more shows after this? That’s up to you. Please let us know what you think! Decodingtv@gmail.com.

One last thing: We’re going to try broadcasting This Week In Streaming live as often as possible. So please do follow us on YouTube and on Twitch and you’ll get notifications whenever we go live.

Over the next week or two, we will release two additional podcast episodes covering Black Mirror: One for episode 3 (“Beyond the Sea”) and one for episodes 4-5 (“Mazey Day” and “Demon 79.”)

28 Jun 2023This Week In Streaming: The Bear Season 201:44:26

This Week In Streaming is a show on the Decoding TV podcast feed that will cover the most interesting shows available on streaming each week. This week, David Chen and Dan Gvozden discuss season 2 of The Bear.

We struggled with how to cover this one given its binge release schedule. While we were originally hoping to release a recap of the first few episodes this past weekend, it soon became clear that it would make more sense to just discuss the season as a whole.

That’s why we’ve decided to deliver a super-sized 1hr43mins long episode diving into this season’s intricacies! We start with general, non-spoilery thoughts on the season. Then starting at around ~12:00, we deliver a full recap and dive into some of our favorite episodes and most memorable moments. We wrap up by discussing some of the issues we feel this season had. We hope you enjoy the conversation!

We’re going to try broadcasting This Week In Streaming live as often as possible, so please do follow us on YouTube and on Twitch and you’ll get notifications whenever we go live.

Listen to hear us discuss all these questions and many more!
