11 Apr 2018Albums Unleashed - Bulletboys with Mick Sweda & Toby Wright Ep31701:30:34
Guitarist Mick Sweda and engineer Toby Wright join the guys this week to reflect on 1988's Bulletboys album. Produced by the Ted Templeman for Warner Bros Records, the album reached #34 on the Billboard 200 chart. Correspondingly, the band received heavy rotation from MTV. The videos for 'Smooth Up in Ya' and 'For the Love of Money' were ever-present at the time. Bulletboys   Mick shares the story of how he, bassist Lonnie Vencent and vocalist Marq Torien exited King Kobra. With the addition of drummer Jimmy D'Anda, the band started turning heads quickly in Hollywood, including that of Templeman. Between the chops of the members and an essential image, Bulletboys were armed with plenty of ammunition. Working as an engineer in 1988, Toby shares his memories from the production side of things including an instance of him showing Mick and the guys reels from the recently-completed 'And Justice for All' album by Metallica. The production of Bulletboys took place at One on One Studios in Hollywood, CA. In this episode, Mick and Toby discuss some differences of opinion on certain aspects of recording and the lessons learned from that process. Additionally, the guys give their thoughts on working with producer Ted Templeman. Next, we move on to get Mick's memories on the songwriting process with a track-by-track discussion. Bulletboys features ten very strong tracks. In contrast to other bands of the era, there isn't a single ballad on the album. Nonetheless, the album thrives in spite of the expected with songs full of attitude and swagger. Bulletboys 1988   Although lead singer Marq Torien has made certain claims about the songwriting on this album, Mick takes time to share his side of the story. In light of Mick's stories today, it makes for an interesting picture of the making of this album. Ultimately, the past came back around to the present. Mick reformed with Jimmy D'Anda and Lonnie Vencent to form Lies Deceit & Treachery; a new band with a classic sound. Check out more on them HERE. Facebook Review: 5 Stars - from Mark Adams The Decibel Geek Podcast is a must listen every week for me. I became a faithful listener about a year ago for several reasons. 1) The Music: I always get to listen to great music. The variety of tunes featured is top notch. Into some of the bands more than others, but the exposure to music I haven't heard before is always appreciated. 2) The Guests: Chris and Aaron have what it takes to make an interview worth listening to. The stars and guest that are on are always entertaining. The insight and humor is always appreciated. I learn something I didn't know almost every time. 3) The Variety: I love themed shows, Toddzilla, KISSmas in July, The featured shows (RUSH, AC/DC) and especially the Radio Sucks episodes. A huge shout out to the Y&T episode you had. They have always been a top 3 band for me and it was great for them to get the exposure they deserve. Thats about it. 03 Dec 2011Episode 13 - Nashville X-TRA00:39:53
We hope everyone is over their tryptophan-induced coma. Thanksgiving was a great time for us at the Decibel Geek Podcast. We had a lot to be thankful for this year. We launched the show this year and added co-host Aaron Camaro.  Our audience is growing and we love talking about music! In short, we’re thankful to YOU for listening to the show. Today’s episode is a Nashville X-tra episode. We kick things off with a new Rage Against the Scene segment where Chris reviews some recent articles from the Nashville Scene and his reaction is not totally what you would expect. Could Chris be moonlighting as a hipster and disguising himself in skinny jeans, bad facial hair, and a bowler hat? Doubtful, but you’ll have to check out the segment to find out. Chris also has a bone to pick with 102.9 The Buzz. There’s been a lot of aggression building up over The Buzz in recent years and Chris is ready to let it all out. Hear his thoughts on their choice to constantly spin 90’s tunes and the complete degradation of The Buzz Around Town. Something smells rotten in Nashville and it has dollar signs all over it. This episode we also announce Decibel Geek’s recent inclusion to Stitcher Radio. If the tedious task of pushing “download” is just too much for you and you have one of those intelligent phone thingy’s, you can now check out the show through the Stitcher Radio app. Simply download the app, search for Decibel Geek, and you’ll be up and running and listening to us bitch about bands in no time! Just go to www.StitcherRadio.com to try it out! Next up Aaron & Chris intro a review of the new 3 Minutes to Live album. Well, I guess it’s not exactly new now since we drug our feet a bit on getting this up. Once we’re over this crack habit, the shows will be better (we think).  Anyway, Chris gives a track-by-track review and shares the good, the bad, and the ugly about this record. We promise, it won’t hurt a bit. We finish off the show with some full tunes for your ear holes. We went for variety this time, so you’ll get Piranah, fORMER, and Fist of the North Star; something for ALL tastes. There will be more music-based episodes in the future so you’ll have a nice break for our droning voices. Hope ya dig it Nastyville! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

18 Dec 20181981 Year in Review Part 2 - Ep34401:28:45
We're back this week to tackle the who, what, when, where and why of the second half of our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! July of 1981 is a strong month for the rock genre. Strong efforts include releases by Foreigner, Def Leppard, and the Ramones. Additionally, some great under the radar albums by Demon and New England help bolster and already solid month. The month of August is a busy one in news and pop culture. The launch of MTV on August 1st is a landmark moment that's about to turn the music world on its head. Also taking place in August of 1981, John Lennon assassin Mark David Chapman is sentenced. Furthermore, a fantastic musical release by Brad Whitford and Derek St. Holmes is getting attention. 1981 Year in Review Part 2 September of 1981 is filled with great rock music as well as a shocking personnel change. The month is marked with solid outings by Triumph, Grand Funk Railroad, Michael Schenker Group, KIX, and Alice Cooper. Additionally, Iron Maiden do the unthinkable and switch lead singers right as the band is beginning its ascent. The music news for October of 1981 includes a young Prince being boo'd off the stage while opening for the Rolling Stones. Also, music piracy is on the radar as the "Home Taping is Killing Music" campaign is launched. Music releases for October include new solo material from Ozzy Osbourne as well as a big release from his previous band, Black Sabbath. Notably, KISS venture into uncharted waters with a new look and a strange concept album. Hollywood death gripped the United States in November of 1981. Famed actress Natalie Wood tragically drowns while on a boat ride with two other notable thespians. Mystery continues to surround the case. Also of note, porn star John Holmes is arrested, and later acquitted, in the Laurel Canyon "Wonderland" murders. Additionally, November of 1981 is highlighted by big releases from Motley Crue and AC/DC. All of this is covered this week as well as classic commercials in our 1981 Year in Review Part 2! 11 May 2023Albums Unleashed Dangerous Toys with Jason McMaster - Ep52702:00:16
This week we're joined by Jason McMaster to discuss the making of the 1989 self-titled debut from Dangerous Toys! As per usua with our Albums Unleashed episodes, we dig into many facets of this album as well as the circumstances around it. In this long-form discussion, Jason gives us the origin story of Dangerous Toys including how changes with his serious gig with progressive thrash band Watchtower would lead to him to moonlight with cover bands. One of these cover bands would turn into Dangerous Toys. The story behind how, basically, a party gig would turn into a major label band is pretty incredible. The chain of events, circumstances, and connections that would lead the band to being signed will surprise you. Additionally, Jason discusses the making of several songs on the album including 'Scared,' 'Sportin' a Woody,' 'Feels Like a Hammer,' 'Queen of the Nile' and more as well as what the studio environment was like with legendary producer Max Norman. Other interesting topics covered include the backstory of Bill Z. Bub, the band's mascot, hanging out on the Sunset Strip during the area's heyday, album photography done with Mark Weiss, a special promo jack-in-the-box item story that's crazy in and of itself and much more! If you love Dangerous Toys, this episode is a MUST-LISTEN! We thank Jason McMaster for being such a great guest with so many great stories! Be sure to check out Jason and co-host "Metal" Dave Glessner on the Talk Louder podcast as well! It's a great show! 19 Nov 2018Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 - Ep34101:18:40
Promoter Joe D'Angelo joins us for Vinnie Vincent Special vol6; our thoughts on Miami, Memphis, and more. We said we'd never do another one of these but with recent events taking place, we had to chime in. In this latest volume, Joe tells us about his experience booking and working with Vinnie Vincent. Vinnie appeared in Miami for The Gathering KISS Kruise Preparty. He appeared for two meet and greet days as well as a performance with Four by Fate onstage for a few songs. Joe gives us the details on what it's like working with Vinnie, how he was to the fans, as well as his thoughts on the onstage performance. We also give our thoughts on Vinnie's performance of Lick It Up, I Love It Loud, and Cold Gin. [caption id="attachment_47584" align="alignright" width="350"] Vinnie Vincent Special vol6 [/caption] Moving on from Miami, Joe stays with us to discuss our thoughts (at that time) about the upcoming 2 night stand at Graceland in Memphis. We delve into what are expectations would be for the fans that are traveling to Tennessee, how ticket sales seemed to be going and speculation on what would go down. A few days after recording with Joe, a Vinnie Vincent bombshell was dropped. The Memphis shows have been postponed (just weeks away from their confirmed dates) and the show is being moved to Nashville in February. While refunds and exchanges seem to be available to ticket buyers, it became apparent quickly that a number of Vinnie Vincent fans were going to be mightily inconvenienced due to this short notice schedule/city change. We give our unfiltered thoughts on this whole mess and state what we think is going to happen (or not happen) in Nashville in February of 2019. 28 Mar 2012Episode 26 - 1975 Year in Review01:09:18
Chris and a raspy-voiced Aaron Camaro return this week with a trip into the past. We're adjusting our flux capacitor and taking the wayback machine to 1975; an era where people wore bellbottoms, platform shoes, and had ridiculous haircuts without a shred of irony.  While there was plenty of music to vomit over, there was also lots of cool rock being put out into the ether. We take some time to share that music in today's episode as well as our discussion of some news events that happened throughout the year. So, kick back, grab a quaalude, and take off those Toughskins while we take a look at 1975. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

03 Aug 2022The Best & Worst of Pantera - Ep48801:26:05
This week we're joined by fellow podcasters Joshua Toomey and Chris Akin as we go over The Best & Worst of Pantera! With the Texas metal legends making news recently with the reunion of Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown along with drummer Charlie Benante and guitarist Zakk Wylde, we figured it's as good a time as any to look back on this incredible band's musical catalog. Starting with 1990's 'Cowboys from Hell,' Pantera blazed a whole new path for thrash and metal music. The Abbott brothers; Vinny Paul and Dimebag Darrell, cemented their place in music history and begun a run with Anselmo and Brown that hasn't been equalled. The subsequent releases 'Vuglar Display of Power,' 'Far Beyond Driven,' 'The Great Southern Trendkill,' and 'Reinventing the Steel' helped the band lay claim as one of the most influential metal bands of all-time. In this long-form discussion, we all share our thoughts on these albums, tell stories of how they personally affected us, and a lot more while picking our favorite and least favorite from each album. This was no easy task but we think you'll enjoy it. We also discuss the 101 Proof Live album as well as some of the b-sides and rarities that Pantera churned out over the years. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Pantera and SHARE with a friend! It’s the New Style for the New Year You’ll notice a change immediately during the theme song; an abrupt belch which is a sign of something new. We’re giving this whole live recording thing a shot and you’ll hear everything in this episode warts-n-all including Aaron and Chris stumbling over words, getting tongue tied, and sound effects going off without warning. It’s as unprofessional as it gets but at least it’s entertaining. Plus, Chris doesn’t have to play around with hours of editing so hopefully this will be a welcome change that will provide more content in the future. We start out talking about what we got for KISSMAS including Aaron’s review of the Ace Frehley autobiography, ‘No Regrets’ and the cool new Rocksmith game. We update Vinnie Vincent’s output for the holidays. Impressive! Chris gives a shout out to Cassius Morris from the Creatures of the Net podcast who recently did an impromptu interview with Eric Singer who called in during his live stream. Cassius is only 13 years old but is already on his way to becoming a big name in podcasting.  Congrats to Cassius! Flashback Time We share a cool radio commercial advertising the Sex Pistols tour of America in 1977 which leads to a discussion of the Sex Pistols impact in music as well as their reputation rubbing off on other punk bands like the Ramons. We also touch on a quick discussion of the G.G. Allin documentary Hated which documents all of the fecal-smearing, heroin-induced debauchery leading up to Allin’s death. Ramones in Kindergarten Chris shares his thoughts on a recent video that’s been sweeping youtube of a kindergarten class singing the Ramones’ classic ‘Judy is a Punk.’ It makes you feel all snuggly inside and gives hope to the world. There’s nothing that will renew your faith in mankind like a bunch of kids singing “perhaps they’ll die”….oh yeah! Corabi Rocks for Tots & a Cinderella Story Chris and Aaron reflect on their recent outing to see John Corabi’s Toys for Tots where they got to talk with Corabi as well as Jeff Labar from Cinderella; fresh off his hip-replacement surgery and filled us in on the possibility (or lack thereof) of new music from Cinderella. We recap the setlist and describe our trek over to a hipster bar invaded by metalheads with the strangest mix of songs from the jukebox you’ve ever heard. Van Halen & the Little People Chris & Aaron discuss the recent announcement of Van Halen’s new album and new single ‘Tattoo’ due next week. We’re totally excited to hear a song about the little guy from Fantasy Island (thanks to the guys from From Out of Nowhere for that joke). We also bemoan how much cooler this news would have been with Michael Anthony involved. Shameless Self-Promotion 101 & The Days of Axl’s Life The guys give their take on the recent induction of Guns N Roses to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a discussion of Eddie Trunk’s recent grilling of the CEO of Hall of Fame as well as the big question of who is going to show up for the ceremony. Will it be the old guys or the new guys? Or, will Axl’s ego be big enough on its own to fill the whole stage. They wind up rambling quite a bit so we hope you dig listening to these guys yack on and on about Axl and co. Chris & Aaron make the announcement of their expanding roles in the podcasting world as they will be contributing members of Podkisst, the leading KISS podcast as well as some contributions to the great Mars Attacks podcast for their Class Albums series. That’s our first foray into the recording live thingy. We promise we’ll get better at it. In the meantime, feel free to laugh at all of the mistakes. Smell ya later! Learn more about your ad choices. 19 Apr 2012Episode 29 - Top 5 Brian Johnson Era AC/DC Songs01:04:52
We're back this week to give you a Stiff Upper Lip after we Flick the Switch and Blow Up Your Video; making you feel like a Fly on the Wall who needs some Black Ice to recover from a Ballbreaker. If that doesn't give you a clue as to what we're talking about, then we'll spell it out for you....AC/DC. While the Bon Scott era of AC/DC laid the foundation of what we have today, we wanted to take an episode to appreciate some of the highlights of the Brian Johnson era of the band.  With the tragic passing of Scott in 1980, AC/DC was left pondering the decision of whether to go on. A fan in Cleveland, Ohio forwarded a cassette tape Brian Johnson fronting the band Geordie to AC/DC manager Peter Mensch who then recommended the singer to Angus Young and company. Young remembers Bon Scott raving about seeing Geordie years before and it was decided that Johnson was a good fit for the band. Brian Johnson, of course, burst onto the scene in his first album with the band, 1980's legendary Back in Black album. The album needs no explanation as chances are you already own it since it is the 3rd best selling album of all-time. AC/DC has persevered since Back in Black with 10 studio albums that have flown in the face of what's trendy and stayed true to their roots.  Chris and Aaron pick out 5 of their favorite tracks from the Brian Johnson era of AC/DC and there's plenty of variety to go around. While it is a common jab by critics to say that AC/DC uses the exact same formula for all of their songs, we venture today to show you that there is variances throughout their history. When you dig deeper into the albums, which the Decibel Geek podcast specializes in, you discover hidden gems that you may have not noticed before. It was a blast putting this episode together and we hope you'll crack open a Fosters, make a Vegemite sandwich, and crank up some solid rock from Down Under with our Top 5 favorite Brian Johnson era AC/DC tunes! PS: Don't forget that this week is the last week to get your requests in for our upcoming Listener Request show! The deadline to get your request in will be this Sunday, April 22nd at 6:00p.m. Central time. After that, any requests will be applied to future shows. The number to call is (540) DBGEEK-1. 06 Feb 2019New Noize KISS Edition - Ep35001:07:52
With so much happening in the KISS world, we thought we'd return with a KISS Edition of New Noize! In this hour-plus talk, we get down to our thoughts on the nuts and bolts of the KISS world in 2019; and boy is it active! KISS kicked off the beginning of their End of the Road tour in Vancouver this week. Specifically, the stage is massive and is getting lots of attention. Additionally, the specter of backing tracks being piped through the sound system is being discussed. Is the new KISS show live or is it Memorex? We'll dissect and give our thoughts. Also of note, on the eve of the new KISS tour, Ace Frehley took aim at his former band mates; blasting Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley with some serious allegations. Have Paul and Gene cost Ace millions of dollars due to badmouthing him? Did Gene really make a pass at Ace's girlfriend? Consequently, did Ace even actually write the salvo that was launched via his social media? We'll examine and give you our take. New Noize   Finally, the Vinnie Vincent saga takes yet another major twist. After lots of silence from Vinnie, the promoter, as well as Rocketown, the two shows scheduled in Nashville for February 8th and 9th have been cancelled by the promoter. According to him, Vinnie backed out of the shows. Subsequently, Vinnie (and his attorney) released statements essentially saying he backed out of the shows due to non-payment. Either way, the remaining fans of Mr. Vincent are, once again, left disappointed. Does this pay out in court? Will the ticket buyers get their refunds? Will there be another concert scheduled and who would trust that the show will happen? We give our take on this circus. As a result of all of this, there's no shortage of drama within the KISS Kamp. There's been speculation that the band would eventually launch a reality show. This begs the question, are we living through it right now? 17 Jan 2013Episode 68 - Jerry Gaskill00:59:22
Jerry Gaskill, longtime drummer for King's X, was in Nashville this week to resume his work with friend/producer/collaborator D.a. Karkos of Underdog Studios; work that had started in January of 2012 but was delayed for a few reasons. Jerry and D.a. were both kind enough to sit down with Decibel Geek Podcast host Chris Czynszak to discuss it all. On February 26th Gaskill suffered a massive heart attack and briefly died before being saved via emergency surgery. In this conversation, Jerry shares what he went through during this time as well as how the presence of his then-fiancee Julie most certainly is the reason he is still alive today.  After news broke of the heart attack, fans of Jerry from all over the globe pitched in in the form of donations and benefit shows to help out the legendary drummer during his road to recovery.  With his body healed, Jerry and Julie tied the knot in Las Vegas just before King's X went back on a brief tour with Kansas in September. Things were looking up.....until October.  Jerry, Chris, D.a. In late October, Superstorm Sandy made landfall along the East Coast and devastated many along the New Jersey shore; the Gaskill's rented home and its contents among them. Once again, fans of the drummer marched into action to raise more funds to help the couple recover from the tragedy. In this discussion, Jerry shows an amazing sense of grace and perseverance. He shares what steps he's taken to continue to move forward with his life and his music. This long-form discussion also has Gaskill sharing his memories of childhood; becoming influenced while watching the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show as it happened live and going on to play his show at the age of seven. Gaskill first crossed paths with future King's X bassist/vocalist Dug Pinnick in 1979. Shortly thereafter, Ty Tabor entered the picture and King's X was born. During this talk, Gaskill describes the early days of the band, the Christian ideals and labels that were attrributed to them, and how he feels about that description today. King's X was widely considered one of the highlights of the 1994 Woodstock festival; with the band gaining new exposure in front of the 300,000 audience members as well as the millions that watched at home. In this conversation, Gaskill recalls the feeling of playing to such a large crowd, how it compared to the original festival, and the night of excess a few days before that threatened to affect King's X perfromance at the show.  As stated before, Gaskill was in Nashville this week to continue working with Karkos as well as legendary producer Michael Wagener at his Wireworld Studio to get more drum sounds for the upcoming solo album. Jerry and D.a. are playing it close to the vest when it comes to describing what fans can expect but they do give a quick glimpse behind the curtain with a story about the unorthodox utilization of a trash can in the studio.  With expectations of a 2013 release, Gaskill seems optimistic about the future of his music as well as his life. His positive attitude and motivation to press forward regardless of his obstacles are a testament to him and the love he receives from his fans. We hope this conversation gives you a fuller perspective on Jerry Gaskill. Contact Info: Jerry Gaskill Underdog Studios Buy Music! Jerry Gaskill King's X D.a. 02 Dec 2013Episode 113 - Roth Era Van Halen Discussion01:01:15
If there is one band that truly defines having a "good time" it's Van Halen. Formed in 1974 in suburban Pasadena, California, brothers Alex and Eddie Van Halen were joined by bassist Michael Anthony and vocalist David Lee Roth and set forth in creating music history. Blessed with other-worldly talent, Eddie quickly redefined the art of hard rock guitar playing via two-handed tapping and whammy bar dive bombs. Alex's drumming, rooted in the influences of Ginger Baker and Buddy Rich, was an aggressive undercurrent to the band's sound. Michael Anthony's rock solid bass playing was only overshadowed by his angelic backing vocals. And David Lee Roth's ringmaster routine; featuring high jumps and other assorted acrobatics, rounded out a band that would marry classical influences with Harlem soul to create the combustible mix that was the Roth-Era of Van Halen. After 1984, it seemed that the spirit of original Van Halen was lost forever with Roth embarking on a long solo career and the brothers starting to work with Sammy Hagar. But, time does tend to heal all wounds and after many years of assorted will-they-won't-they drama, the original Van Halen (sans Michael Anthony) reconvened in 2006 and released new material in 2012. Toddzilla This week Aaron and Chris are joined by Nashville rock music legend Todd Austin (aka Toddzilla). Todd has been a fixture of the Nashville rock/funk music scene for many years. Known in local circles as the 'Minister of Funk' through his work with JonesWorld and his new project Funkhammer, Todd wanted to join us for a discussion of Roth-Era Van Halen and how it affected him as a guitar player and as a person. In this discussion we'll discuss favorite tracks from all Roth-Era VH albums as well as indulge in some of Toddzilla's favorite memories of Dave and the boys from back in the day. It's a solid hour of nostalgia for debauchery and crazy concert memories of a legendary band. Don't miss it! Every year, the high seas get rocked a little harder during this time of year and 2014 was no exception. The Monsters of Rock Cruise featured around 40 Decibel Geek-worth artists performing rotating sets in the Bahamas aboard the massive MSC Divina cruise ship and our very own Rich "The Meister" Dillon was on board to take it all in.   Rich "Meister" Dillon came through Nashville on his way back from the Monsters of Rock cruise to join Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Andy Lafon for a discussion of all of the music, atmosphere, and debauchery that took place on the high seas. Underscoring this conversation is music from artists aboard the ship such as Cinderella, Killer Dwarfs, Winger, Red Dragon Cartel, and a bunch more. 01 Oct 2013Episode 104 - Buried Treasure01:14:38
The average music fan these days tends to enjoy a band while they are "in fashion" and on the charts. Unfortunately, that's a passing thing and what goes up, must come down. It seems that the instant that a band falls out of favor with the general crowd, it becomes the majority's modus operandi to mock said artist for a short while and then, worse, ignore them completely. This usually leads to the artist working twice as hard to put out quality material (sometimes too hard in the case of trend following) and typically continued to be ignored by the mainstream listening audience. It's a sad state of affairs where nobody wins. The artist doesn't win due to their hard work not getting recognized and the music fans don't win due to not being aware of the material being released by the artist due to flavor-of-the-week favoritism. This week, Aaron and Chris set out to introduce your ears to some gems that were lost on overlooked and ignored albums by bands/artists that had already seen their "better days." Tracks by artists such as David Lee Roth, Enuff Z'nuff, Hanoi Rocks, The Doors, Alice Cooper, Hanoi Rocks and more highlight this episode as we unearth "Buried Treasures." Enuff Z'Nuff - Tweaked, "Life is Strange" (1995) Poison – Crack a Smile – “Shut Up, Make Love” (2000) The Doors - L.A. 11 Jul 2012Episode 41 - KISS Kovers01:09:18
After such a great response to our Lydia Criss conversation in week 1, KISSMAS in July shifts into a new gear with Chris and Aaron's favorite KISS Kover songs taking center stage. When researching covers of KISS songs, it quickly became apparent that KISS has influenced artists from just about every genre of music (we couldn't find any jazz KISS covers).  While there were, of course, plenty of examples of straight-ahead rock bands paying homage to the hottest band in the land; the covers from the worlds of disco, pop, folk, bluegrass, and death metal really surprised us.  We must give credit to the fine folks of KISSFAQ for providing such a great, deep discography of pretty much anything and everything KISS and related.  The tribute album section includes officially released product as well as 5 (and counting) tribute albums that were produced by KISSFAQ forum members. Now, THAT'S a devoted following!   Obviously, with so many cover songs existing, it would impossible to even include a fraction of them in this episode. So, with that said, Aaron and Chris ventured to celebrate KISSMAS in July by playing their favorite covers. A lot of digging went into these picks and we hope that you are turned onto some great stuff. If so, click one of the links below to hear more of these great KISS-inspired artists. Rock on! 30 Nov 2018Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977 Ep34201:33:11
Filmmaker Andrew Sgambati is with us this week to talk about The Greatest Show on Earth as well as to pick our Top 5 KISS Songs 1974-1977! While there's a ton of controversy surrounding the Hottest Band in the Land in 2018 we're happy to have Andrew on to discuss a time when all was right in the world. The mid-1970's were a magical time for KISS. The strength of their six studio albums and two live albums propelled the band into the heights of pop culture consciousness in 1977. Inspired by such a special era for the band, Andrew channeled that inspiration into making The Greatest Show on Earth; a concert film/documentary sourced from video from live 1977 concerts and audio from Alive II. 04 May 2014Vinnie Vincent Special pt 5 - Andre Labelle (Ep 135)00:57:00
Sometimes going back on your word can be a good thing......   This week we present you with the 5th installment of our Vinnie Vincent Special. Joining us for this discussion is drummer Andre Labelle of The Sky. Andre was tapped by Vinnie to drum on the still-not-officially released album Guitars from Hell that was recorded over a period of 1989 through 1992. In this discussion you'll hear the whole story of how the project was started, the interesting ways that Vinnie would decide on equipment, recording techniques, and the circumstances that led to the album being shelved.   During this discussion Andre also shares some interesting insight into Vinnie's brief reconciliation with Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and his work with them on the then-in-production 'Revenge' album as well as Vinnie's influence going beyond the songwriting for the album.   Guitars from Hell has leaked in-part online over the past few years in the form of rough demos; many of which feature Vincent re-recording all the tracks using a drum machine in Labelle's place. In this discussion, Andre shares his feelings about this and confirms that more than the 8 leaked songs do exist. Fan-created artwork   Along with Andre, the Guitars from Hell album featured the return of original Vinnie Vincent Invasion vocalist  and current Sky front man Robert Fleischman. During this talk, Andre shares the working dynamic between the vocalist and guitarist and how things didn't always go very smoothly yet still yielded an incredible technical performance out of all parties.   The Sky recently released their second full-length album, 'Majestic.' The band is rounded out by bassist Steve Barber and guitarist Ryan Lake.     As we did in part 3 of the Vinnie Vincent Special with Robert Fleischman, all music clips in the epiosde come from the 'Majestic' album. 14 Oct 2020KISS and Philosophy - Ep42701:08:23
We're getting cerebral this week while talking about the hottest band in the land as we chat with the authors of KISS and Philosophy; a book that seeks to enlighten you in a rock and roll way. On the surface, you'd probably think that KISS songs are simply about groupies and having fun. To a point, you'd be right. However, as this book seeks to prove, there are a lot of poignant statements made throughout KISS' lyrical history. Editor Court Lewis and contributor Matt Alschbach (along with others) provide an interesting case study in the ways that KISS' music parallels philosophy by Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and more. Don't worry, this is no stuffy read; it's written for the layman and carries some great humor throughout. Plus, these guys are died-in-the-wool KISS fans and you'll get lots of cool nuggets throughout. In this discussion, Matt and Court share their personal KISStories as well as help explain the main points of the book. We had a great time talking to these guys and know you will enjoy listening.  You can pick up KISS and Philosophy: Wiser Than Hell at most major book retailers or direct from Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/KISS-Philosophy-Popular-Culture/dp/0812694910 We hope you enjoy our talk on KISS and Philosophy and SHARE with a friend! 02 Jan 2013Episode 66 - Radio Sucks vol.9 Best of 201201:18:18
We know, we know; a Best of year-end episode is not very original and many of our podcasting brothers-in-arms have done or are doing the same but you've gotta admit, 2012 was a great year for rock/metal music! LA Guns returned to form in 2012 withe solid release of Hollywood Forever. Produced by the legendary Andy Johns, the album is, in essence, a love letter to the Sunset Strip scene that launched the band over 25 years ago. Aaron's choice of a track from this solid release is a natural choice. While we start the show with a band with a serious amount of work in its canon; Chris' choice of a track from Sweden's Eclipse comes from just their sophomore album. We can thank YOU the listener for this as this band was suggested to us throughout the year and has gone on to become one of our favorites. Great, melodic hard rock with a metal tinge. We follow Eclipse up with a pair of tracks from some hard rock and metal legends respecively. First, Aaron spins a track from the fantastic new album by Overkill, The Electric Age. Following that is a track from, if you believe lead singer Don Dokken, Dokken's Broken Bones album that features some great fretwork from John Levin; filling in for the departed George Lynch. If there's one band that doesn't know the meaning of subtlety it is Jackyl. The band hailing from Kennesaw, GA has a long history of saying exactly what it feels and Aaron's choice of a track from their new Best in Show album is no exception. It will have you rethinking your dining habits, for sure. Chris' next pick of a track from In This Moment's Blood album is all due to the power of podcasting; becoming a favorite of his after hearing it on two other great rock/metal podcasts. Aaron Camaro recently enjoyed a night out on the town, checking out Local H's recent stop in Nashville. His choice of a track off of their 2012 release Hallelujah! I'm a Bum is a tongue in cheek barnburner that takes it's inspiration from a classic Beatles tune; sorta. As any good Decibel Geek is more than aware, KISS released Monster in 2012; taking things up a notch from 2009's strong showing on Sonic Boom. Was this Chris or Aaron's favorite album of 2012? You'll have to listen to find out but we think Chris' choice of track from this album will definitely have you shouting to the heavens. Pantera released new music in 2012.......really. While the idea of new music from Pantera seems pretty far-fetched since it's missing a very key ingredient, they did release a shelved track from the Vulgar Display of Power sessions in celebration of the 20th anniversary of its release. We give you some relief from the long wait with this awesome tune. Closing things out is a track from the long-awaited return-to-Roth version of Van Halen. A Different Kind of Truth was released early in 2012 and it still resonates as loudly at the end of the year as it did in the beginning. The combination of Roth's lyrical gymnastics and Eddie's amazing guitar tone and shredding leads makes this not only a great release of 2012; it's a great release...period. We close out the show with a reminder to keep your cool in the new year. Joshua Toomey from Talk Toomey podcast joins the guys this week for Metallica Discussion; 2 hours-plus of talk about the band's 9 official studio albums as well as their history. 31 May 2017Under the ACDC Influence - Ep28402:23:18
DBG VIP and Decibel Geek writer, Steven Michael, joins Chris and Aaron for Under the ACDC Influence; a deep dive into bands that were influenced by the Australian hard rock giants. Steve and the guys discuss their love for ACDC, the evidence of their influence on rock and roll history, and spin a bunch of tracks by a bunch of bands that were influenced by Angus Young and company. Many fads come and go, and with them so do many bands. What is the flavor of the week will soon be a punchline to a joke told decades later. ACDC never fell into that trap. Through numerous trends including Prog Rock, Punk Rock, Disco, New Wave, Glam Metal, and Grunge, the Australian-born legends stayed the course; continuing to pump out headbanging, hooky rock n roll. This consistency has produced an influence that has transcended multiple generations of fans. Under the ACDC Influence In this jam packed episode you'll get tracks from Jackyl, Four Horsemen, Voodoo Piston, Ugly Kid Joe, The Treatment, Rhino Bucket, Koritni, Black Aces, Airbourne, Dirty Looks, ACCEPT, Guns N Roses, Rose Tattoo, 77, and Krokus! It's 2 hours plus of drinks, discussion, tunes, and more drinks. We hope you enjoy Under the ACDC Influence and SHARE with a friend! More Steven! Articles Buy Music! 09 Sep 2013Episode 101 - Holidaze01:10:53
September is the gateway to autumn; leaves changing, kids in school, football on the weekends.....and a ton of strange holidays. America continues its downward spiral into over-thinking everything and Chris and Aaron use it to their advantage this week as their song choices are inspired but some of the nutty holidays that take place in September.  September 5th is Cheese Pizza Day in the United States. Chris' choice of a track from Motley Crue's 1989 Dr. Feelgood album hits the spot. September 2nd is Labor Day. While this one isn't wacky at all, it was too good to resist using as inspiration for Aaron's pick from Motorhead's Snake Bite Love album. September 16th is Working Parents Day in America. While there were lots of choices that could have been made, Chris throws a curve ball with his mother-ly choice of a song from Dope's Life album. September 6th is Fight Procrastination Day. Putting things off is a common trait for many people and this holiday surely hits home for lots of people. Aaron's choice of a pick about the hope of love on the near future from KISS' 1980 Unmasked album is an interesting one. September 17th is Constitution Day. While laws and rights are all about what make up America's number one document, Chris goes across the ocean for a pick from Hardcore Superstar's 2013 C'mon Take on Me album. No look at important dates in the month of September hold more weight than September 11th. This date is burned into the minds of all that witnessed it and the guys had to address it in this episode. Aaron's choice of a track from LA Guns' Waking the Dead album is a fitting tribute to some of the heroes from that fateful day. Continuing on a serious note is Chris choice of a song to celebrate September 13th; Fortune Cookie Day. Just kidding. It's actually quite a stretch but well worth it to spin a track from Thin Lizzy's legendary Bad Reputation album from 1977. September 13th is Blame Someone Else Day. This day is probably popular in Washington. Either way, Aaron picka a track from Poison's debut album Look What the Cat Dragged In. September 23rd is Dog in Politics Day. What does this mean? We have no idea but it was enough impetus for Chris to pick a track from Krokus' new album Dirty Dynamite. The video is a must-see. We close out the show with Aaron's pick of a track from Ugly Kid Joe's America's Least Wanted album that helps celebrate September 28th; Good Neighbor Day. Buy Music! 03 May 2012Episode 31- Dick Wagner00:45:17
Welcome to our nightmare. We think you're gonna like it. Actually, the episode that we post for your listening pleasure today was truly a dream come true for us.  In this long form discussion, veteran guitar maestro Dick Wagner reflects on what it's been like being on the inside of rock history for 40+years. Appearing on more than 200 albums and garnering more than 35 Gold and Platinum albums, Wagner has quite a story (or in this case, many stories) to tell as he gives us a glimpse of the fantastic historical essays that await you in his recently released (and soon to be hardcover-released) e-book entitled Not Only Women Bleed: Vignettes from the Heart of a Rock and Roll Musician. Dick shares stories with us from his earliest days including backing Jerry Lee Lewis in a television appearance as well as the circumstances that led him to become the musical director for the Alice Cooper solo band.  Also in this discussion is Dick's recollections of a short stint living in Nashville in the early 1990's attempting to break into the Country music songwriting game and the resistance he received from the "good ole boy" network. Wagner gives us the inside story on Alice Cooper's (and his own) substance abuse trouble in the 1970's and early 1980's. You'll hear about Alice's state of mind during the recording of 1983's bizarre DaDa album as well as the strange fitness routine Cooper incorporated into his daily life when the two first met. From Aerosmith's Get Your Wings to KISS' Destroyer & Revenge albums, Wagner has appeared on some very well-loved tracks without receiving credit for his playing. Does he harbor any ill-will for not receiving his just desserts? You'll hear his unfiltered take in this interview. Dick also shares his take on what he and the Alice Cooper band thought of a young upstart named KISS surpassing them on the charts.  This episode features some stories from Wagner's personal archive that must be heard to be believed. Stories of all facets of pop culture colliding at specific times. Strange bedfellows indeed. Our discussion with Dick Wagner only scratches the surface of the goldmine of amazing stories of sex, drugs, rock and roll, and more sex that you'll be glued to when reading Not Only Women Bleed. Be sure to check out Dick's official website for news updates as well as a full history/discography. We are very pleased to bring you this episode and thank you for listening. We're back to discuss all the weird and wild happenings in the rock world with Geekwire! Aerosmith's upcoming farewell tour with The Black Crows is making news due to it's pricing. For a paltry $400, you can attend the show and sit on a bar stool with a blocked view. We share our thoughts on this bargain of the century. Elvis Presley, apparently, was more than aware of KISS in the 1970's and had a penchant for Ace Frehley's guitar playing. We discuss this interesting anecdote. Iron Maiden is suing a women's intimate apparel line and it's giving us creepy visuals. MTV News has shut down. Apparently, it was still a thing. Who knew? Other stories covered this week include the return of Jason Newsted to the Metal world, John 5 vouching for Motley Crue's live integrity, David Ellefson blasting Dave Mustaine, KIX hanging it up, BraveWords launching a record label and more! 02 Jun 2015Albums Unleashed - Tora Tora Wild America - ep19101:51:54
We return with the latest installment of our Albums Unleashed series and this one is Wild! Aaron and Chris return this week along with special guest Anthony Corder to discuss the fantastic 1992 A&M Records release of Tora Tora's Wild America. This album hit the shelves amidst a tidal wave of grunge music that was taking over the airwaves. The musical climate at the time relegated it to a slot just outside the Billboard Top 100. 20 Feb 2023Geekwire for Week of 02.20.23 - Ep51700:56:50
We're back to discuss all the current happenings in the rock and metal world with Geekwire! We start with a double-shot of Megadeth-related news as the band proper will be joined by former guitarist Marty Friedman at their upcoming Budokan show in Tokyo. On a less-positive note, former guitarist Jeff Young didn't hold back in his opinion of Dave Mustaine's current talent level. We share our thoughts on both of these stories. KISS manager Doc McGhee had a very awkward exchange in an interview recently. When pressed by Synchin' Stanley about Paul Stanley's use of vocal tracks, Doc had a confusing answer. We share our thoughts on this news. Rolling Stone Magazine released a "Horrible Albums by Brilliant Artists" article which included KISS. Are they now claiming KISS are brilliant? We share our thoughts and take a peak at the article. Other artists covered this week include Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Geezer Butler, Bon Jovi, Dio, and Dave Grohl among others. All that and rock start birthdays, death anniversaries, and upcoming releases we're excited for. We hope you enjoy Geekwire for the week of 02.20.23 and SHARE with a friend! 14 Nov 2012Episode 59 - Hostile Hoser Hijack01:04:09
This is not a test! We have "jammed the transmission" and taken over the Decibel Geek Podcast. Consider this the Hostile Hoser Hijack as this week your favorite podcast has been taken hostage by CANADIANS! Consider this episode as a sequel to the previous Radio Sucks - Canadian Edition show but this time broadcast from the pirate studio in the Great White North. Chris and Aaron get to take the week off whether they expected to or not! Your hijacker hosts, Wally Norton and Rich Dillon dig through some of their Canadian Cd's in hope of turning on the Decibel Geek Army to some new sounds from north of the border. Things get rolling with Automan.ca a new Canadian band featuring a familiar name. Front man Darrell "Dwarf" Millar (Killer Dwarfs) has stepped out from behind the drums and exercises his vocals with "Back in the Sun" Wally dedicates his first pick to Aaron Camaro who mentioned Slik Toxic on the last Canadian episode. From the "Doin the Nasty" album comes "Cheap Nicotine". Slik Toxic's vocalist can be now heard fronting his new band Famous Underground with a new album just released not long ago. Slash Puppet is up next, with "When the Whip Comes Down" probably one of the greatest Canadian bands to never get signed back in the day. Up here though, they burned bright with some great tunes and kick ass live  shows. Up next, something almost unheard of on the Decibel Geek show is a ballad. In what Wally describes as the greatest rock ballad ever written, we have Gypsy Rose and "Don't Turn Your Back On Me Now" from the Gene Simmons produced Prey album. "One Way Ticket" is a tune from a great young band out of the Hamilton area, 40 Sons. This tune proves that there is hope for the future as these kids are writing some really melodic, kick ass rock tunes. Fraze Gang, featuring Greg Fraser and Stevie Skreebs of Brighton Rock have just released Fraze Gang 2 and "Saint or Sinner" the lead off track is Wally's pick to kick things into overdrive. With a real Judas Priest feel, the guitar work on this track is truly smoking! Some Decibel Geeks might know of the television police drama Flashpoint. What you may not know is that Hugh Dillon who plays Officer Ed Lane on the show is also the front man for Canadian Punk rockers The Headstones. Rich spins the high octane "Reno" off the Smile and Wave CD. The Decibel Geeks have already been introduced to Carl Dixon and Coney Hatch. This time we turn to Coney's bass player Andy Curran and his solo band Soho 69 with the track "Scatterbrain". Next up Rich chooses the song "Pine Valley" from the obscure Canadian band Mushroom Trail. A bluesy little rocker from a band so obscure that he even stumped his co-host. Closing out this Canadian metal feast, after all the back-bacon and beer. We have a real treat, West Memphis Suicide rocking out a crunchy version of Kiss's "War Machine". This track can be found on the new Kissin' Time - Canada's Tribute to Kiss CD. This Cd was just released on Halloween 2012 with all proceeds going to Sick Kids Hospital here in Toronto. 20 Oct 2014Albums Unleashed Motley Crue with John Corabi - Ep15901:07:44
We're back with the second installment of our Albums Unleashed series and it's been a long time coming but we truly believe it's been worth the wait.   John Corabi joins Aaron and Chris this week to discuss what is arguably one of the most underrated albums of all-time; Motley Crue's self-titled album from 1994. In part one of this discussion, John helps us lay the groundwork into the story of the album with stories of his audition process, pre-production for the album, and the maddening-yet-rewarding experience of working with legendary producer Bob Rock.   John also shares revelations into the decision-making process of Motley Crue at that time; choosing to abandon the previously-blazed path of lyrics about rock and roll decadence and focus on delivering an album that's powerful not only musically but thought-provoking in its exploration of dark social commenatary. Tracks discussed in part one of this discussion include 'Hammered,' 'Power to the Music,' 'Uncle Jack,' and 'Hooligan's Holiday.' Also covered in this episode is information on John's current plans to perform the Motley album in-full at select upcoming dates with his band that includes guitarists Jeremy Asbrock, Josh Dutoit, bassist Topher Nolen and John's son Ian Corabi.   Next week we return to the track by track of the remainder of the album and it promises not to disappoint as John is very forthcoming in sharing the impetus for each song, it's process of creation, and his thoughts on them in hindsight.   Buy Music!   John Corabi Motley Crue   More John Corabi! 17 Mar 2017Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In with Rikki Rockett - Ep27601:20:44
Rikki Rockett joins the guys this week for Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In. In this long-form discussion, Rikki shares stories from the early days of Poison including the decision to move from Pennsylvania to Hollywood in the early 1980's. Also in the episode, Rikki talks about the departure of original guitarist Matt Smith and an audition process that would go down to a head to head battle between Slash and CC DeVille. In this Albums Unleashed Poison Look What the Cat Dragged In special, Rikki reflects on the recording process of the album. Producer Rick Browde was on board early for the sessions but things got tense quickly due to creative differences. In this episode, Rikki also discusses the struggle to survive in a Hollywood scene that was very unforgiving. Those struggles would be played out lyrically in some of the songs. While the album was recorded on a meager budget and on limited time, it would go on to spawn three big singles and sell 4 million copies worldwide. Albums Unleashed Poison Albums Unleashed Look What the Cat Dragged In also features a track-by-track breakdown of the album including song inspirations and production techniques used. It's an hour-plus of discussion about a remarkable album from a very transitional time in popular music. The Decibel Geek podcast would like to thank Sher Bach, Brandon Gibbs, Kenny Bailey, and the entire Devil City Angels team for their help in securing this interview. Be sure to check out Devil City Angels when they come to your town!  Before we get to the interview, Chris & Aaron give you the inside details of the upcoming Nashville Rock n Pod Expo. Taking place August 26, 2017, the expo will feature rock podcasters from all over North America, vinyl/memorabilia dealers, and rock celebrities and personalities mingling with fans. 15 Dec 2022The Best & Worst of Metallica Part 1 (1983-1991) - Ep50801:36:44
This week we begin a mega two part series as we look at The Best & Worst of Metallica! In this episode, we're joined by fellow podcaster Metal Mike Tyler from That Metal Station & The Plug podcast. This time, we're focusing on the formative years of the bay area legends. Metallica broke onto the scene in 1983 with the release of 'Kill Em All.' The melding of punk and NWOBHM influences created a bombastic new sound that would create the genre of thrash metal. The band wouldn't slow down; releasing 'Ride the Lightning' in 1984. In 1986, the band would unleash 'Master of Puppets' on a ravenous fan base. While riding high on the momentum of their first three albums, Metallica would encounter tragedy on the road as bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a bus crash in Sweden. The band would quickly regroup and recruit former Flotsam and Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted. Metallica would work out the kinks on 1987's 'The 5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited' before launching a full scale assault on the ears with 1988's '...And Justice for All.' The release of the 'One' single and music video would elevate the band into the public eye. In 1991, the ascendancy would be complete with the release of 'Metallica,' better known simply as The Black Album. The simplified direction didn't exactly please die-hard fans but certainly earned the band superstar status. In this episode, the guys will discuss their history of becoming Metallica fans, reminisce on their experiences as fans, and each pick what they deem the best and worst song from each album of this era. What are YOUR picks for the best and worst songs from each album? Let us know in the comments below! We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Metallica Part 1 (1983-1991) and SHARE with a friend! 30 Dec 2022The Best & Worst of Metallica Part 2 (1996-Today) - Ep51001:32:19
We're back for the second half of our 2 part series on the Best & Worst of Metallica! This time, we're joined by our friend and fellow podcaster Joshua Toomey to cover the latter half of the kings of thrash career as we focus on 1996 through today. Riding high on the success of The Black Album, Metallica returned in 1996 with Load and Reload a year later. The band had a new look and a new, stripped down sound. While the changes didn't necessarily resonate with their hardcore fans, it opened the band to a new audience and success continued. They would continue to change with the release of St. Anger before returning to an earlier sound with Death Magnetic. However, they'd take a huge left turn courtesy of the collaboration with Lou Reed in Lulu. Righting the ship, they'd release Hardwired...to Self Destruct to the joy of their fan base. In 2022, they'd give fans a glimpse of the future with the release of the single 'Lux Aeterna.' This release would coincide with the announcement of their next album '72 Seasons' as well as a huge tour with Pantera to come in 2023 and 2024. In this discussion, the guys pick their favorite and least favorite tune off each album, give their thoughts on the ever-changing sound of the band during these years and state their hopes for the next album. Additionally, they discuss singles, EP releases, and cover songs released during this period. We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Metallica Part 2 (1996-Today) and SHARE with a friend! 09 Jun 2017The Heavier Side of RUSH - Ep28501:44:55
Chris & Aaron return this week to discuss The Heavier Side of RUSH; songs that kick a little harder from the legendary Canadian trio. RUSH, formed in 1968, and solidified in 1971 with a lineup of Geddy Lee (bass/vocals), Alex Lifeson (guitar), and John Rutsey (drums) would find aid in manager Ray Danniels and producer Terry Brown. The self-titled 1974 debut album was filled with hard rock numbers reminiscent of Led Zeppelin. The band would ultimately break on the strength of the song 'Working Man' receiving airplay on WMMS in Cleveland. Rutsey, however, would have to retire from the road due to health complications. Enter Neil Peart. The multi-talented drummer had incredible skill not only on the kit but would go on to become the band's principal lyricist. From that point, RUSH carved their own path; releasing trailblazing albums that straddled the worlds of hard and progressive rock; building a rabid following along the way. 40-plus years later and RUSH sit, rightfully, in the upper echelon of rock music history. The Heavier Side of RUSH In this long-form RUSH-themed episode, the guys share their personal take on RUSH's history, their influence, their legacy, and more. They also spin some of their favorite heavier RUSH tunes. Using it as a helpful guide, they also discuss the awesome new RUSH: Album by Album book penned by Martin Popoff and also share how YOU can win a copy! 13 Apr 2015Conversation with Mark Slaughter - Ep18401:51:33
This week we fulfill an interview wish that goes back to the beginning of the show; fitting for our 4 year anniversary. This week Aaron and Chris celebrate the 4 year anniversary of Decibel Geek with an in-depth conversation with Mark Slaughter. Currently promoting his new solo album produced by Michael Wagener, 'Reflections in a Rearview Mirror' Mark was kind enough to sit down in-person with Aaron, Chris, and Decibel Geek writer Billy Hardaway for a long-form talk on the new album, the history of Slaughter, and A LOT of discussion about his days working with Vinnie Vincent in the Invasion. Aaron and Chris put out a call a few weeks ago for listener questions for Mark and the listeners did not disappoint. Many of the questions made it into the interview including one that Mark deemed his favorite. The solicitor of that question wins an autographed print of Mark from the photoshoot for his new album. The photo was taken by friend of the show and past guest Chad Lee of Chad Lee Photography. Be sure to listen to the end because Mark gives you another opportunity to win a signed photo if you can be the first to submit an answer to feedback@decibelgeek.com. 02 Jun 2014Conversation with Chuck Garric - Ep13900:40:12
Chuck Garric is no stranger to large crowds and big tours. His bass duties for such rock and metal legends as Dio, LA Guns, and Alice Cooper have given him quite a resume. But one thing that stays the same after playing in front of millions of people over the years; Chuck Garric is still the same music fan he was as a kid.   When not on tour, Garric resides in Nashville, TN as part of the long line of rockers that have made their way to the Southeastern hotbed of music. On a random weeknight you can see Chuck, along with members/ex-members of Motley Crue, Thin Lizzy, Accept and many others jamming out to some of the songs that got them hooked on rock and roll in their early years.   Aaron and Chris were fortunate enough to grab a coffee with Chuck just before he left for Europe to hit some big festivals with Alice Cooper as well as gearing up to co-headline with Motley Crue on their final tour.   In this discussion, Chuck goes back to his Lake Tahoe, CA roots to describe his musical upbringing, the awesomeness of Ted Nugent, his thoughts on American vs. European audiences, and the likelihood of Alice breaking the drought of DaDa songs in the setlist among other things.   For all things Beasto Blanco (including how to purchase the album) go to: www.livefastdieloud.com   Follow Chuck on Twitter @BeastoBlanco   Buy Music!   Alice Cooper Beasto Blanco Ted Nugent   Contact Us!   Rate, Review, and Subscribe in iTunes Join the FacebookFan Page Follow on Twitter Follow onInstagram E-mail Us Call us on theHotline! 29 Apr 2024The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2012 - Ep57201:16:19
We're back this week to examine an era for a classic band that resulted in huge sales but possible long-term damage as we consider The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2012. Coming off the heels of back-to-back successes 'Permanent Vacation' and 'Pump,' Aerosmith was riding high. Those two albums opted to inject a more commercial flavor to their sound and the results spoke for themselves. Heading into the 90's, the band leaned further in that direction going forward with sometimes mixed results. In this episode we'll pick our favorite and least favorite tracks from 'Get a Grip,' 'Nine Lives,' 'Just Push Play,' 'Honkin' on Bobo,' and 'Music From Another Dimension.' Aerosmith sold a ton of albums through these releases so their bank accounts approved of them. However, did they push things too far and alienate hardcore fans? We discuss this entire era, songs that got left off, drama behind the scenes, and much more. It's an hour-plus of Aerosmith discussion covering an era that rarely gets brought up. Is that for a reason? Did we find some gold among these albums? Listen and find out! We hope you enjoy The Best & Worst of Aerosmith 1993-2021 and SHARE with a friend! 11 Apr 2012Episode 28 - 1983 Year in Review01:03:20
Before we flash back in  time we want to remind you of our upcoming Listener Request episode! We want you to call in your hard rock/metal song request on our hotline and we'll play our favorite requests on the show! The number to call is (540) - DBGEEK-1 (or (540) 324-3351). That number will take you straight to our voice mail hotline. Don't be shy! We had some great feedback on the recent 1975 Year in Review show so we decided to jump back into the time machine and venture to another year. This time we're going back to the days of Atari, Dr. J, and Metallica before they became sycophantic Lou Reed cohorts. We're heading back to 1983. This Year in Review episode has got a little bit of everything from the pop culture stew of 1983. There was a lot going on in the entertainment world from M.A.S.H. ending its legendary run atop the television world to the release of the tragedy-laden movie version of The Twilight Zone movie. We touch on that stuff but we're a music show, right? The musical landscape of 1983 was certainly varied. The top of the Billboard charts was mostly owned by Michael Jackson as this was the release year for his vaunted Thriller album. Other top pop stars of the year included The Police and a young starlet named Madonna. The hard rock and metal world was certainly in flux in 1983 with grease painted rock legends KISS decided to scrub off the clown white and go au naturele on MTV. A new metal band was starting to make waves in the Bay Area in 1983. Metallica released Kill 'Em All on Megaforce Records and heavy metal was never the same. 1983 was a confusing year for rock legends Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath with the left-of-center releases of DaDa and Born Again respectively. So, break out your Wacky Wallwalkers, strap on your Swatch, and hope into the Family Truckster. It's time to hit the time travel highway to 1983! Learn more about your ad choices. 02 Jul 2018Conversation with Damon Johnson - Ep32601:11:55
Damon Johnson joins us this week for a discussion of his incredible career. At the present time, Damon has his hands full with Black Star Riders and his upcoming solo album Memoirs of an Uprising. Damon Johnson really brings it in this long-form talk with some great stories from his career and life. From Brother Cane's early days opening for such legends as Van Halen, Aerosmith and Robert Plant among others. Additionally, Damon shares his memories of Brother Cane navigating a shifty musical tide in the 1990's. [caption id="attachment_44329" align="alignright" width="350"] Damon Johnson [/caption] Damon's post-Brother Cane career has taken many twists and turns. Collaborations with Sammy Hagar, Faith Hill, Damn Yankees, Carlos Santana, and Slave to the System (featuring members of Queensryche) show the range of talent in his arsenal. In 2004, Damon Johnson was brought into the Alice Cooper band. In this conversation, he shares his memories of getting the gig, his relationship with Alice, and what he's learned from his time in the band. 2011 saw Damon get to live out another childhood dream as he joined Thin Lizzy. Touring under that banner, he formed a strong chemistry with guitarist Scott Gorham and singer Ricky Warwick. The seeds for Black Star Riders were planted. Ultimately, Black Star Riders would take the Thin Lizzy spirit and breathe life into a well-oiled machine; releasing three solid albums of material. As of 2018, the catalog, including All Hell Breaks Loose, The Killer Instinct, and Heavy Fire, has built a devoted global fan base. Aside from band work with living legends, Damon has a great catalog of solo material. His first album, Dust, was released in 2000. Release would come along in 2010 and Echo in 2016. A live album, Birmingham Tonight, represents 2017 for Damon Johnson. For 2018, Damon has set his sights on another solo album. Memoirs of an Uprising is being funded through Pledge Music. As of this episode release, the project is 87% funded with a deadline two weeks away. Decibel Geek really wants to help push this project over the finish line and we'd like YOUR help. Click the link below to make a pledge. As you'll see, there's a lot of cool options including CDs, Vinyl, and signed items, and tons more. 27 Dec 2012Episode 65 - A Very Motley X-mas01:14:36
Since the world didn't come to an end last week (check out our Songs for the Apocalypse episode), we are thrilled that we can celebrate Christmas with you all! Since the very beginning of the Decibel Geek Podcast, we've received an increasing number of requests for a Motley Crue special. So, with this being the season of giving, this week we decided to have A Very Motley X-mas. In this episode, Chris & Aaron randomly select albums from the Crue's 30+ studio discography and spin one song they'd like to share with the listeners from each. You'll hear songs from the 1981 debut, Too Fast for Love, all the way through 2008's Saints of Los Angeles. Also included in this episode are a couple of our famous Deep Thoughts With....segments; this week including one from Nikki Sixx and one from Tommy Lee. Thought provoking stuff, indeed. With Motley Crue, controversy is never far away and their press headlines tend to overshadow a lot of great hard rock music. With that in mind, we made a conscious effort to stay away from all of the off-stage drama and focus squarely on the music as this is a celebration, not an expose. We solicited some listener picks through our Decibel Geek Fan Page as well as from the die-hard Crue heads over at the Motley Shout boards. Did some of their suggestions make our list? You'll have to listen and find out. We hope all of you Motley Crue fans enjoy this audio look back on their career.  As for the future, Nikki Sixx revealed in a Facebook response that there definitely will be a new Motley Crue record and it will be "the best one yet." Former Motley Crue front man John Corabi has recently released an all-acoustic album entitled John Corabi Unplugged on Rat Pak Records.  The album features renditions of songs from his days with Motley as well as  his pre-Crue band The Scream and post-Crue band Union. It also includes 5 new songs and an interview. Go to www.johncorabi.com to check it out and buy it. And if this episode inspires you to want to beef up your Motley Crue collection.....go Buy It Here! 24 Feb 2012Episode 22 - Under Covers01:21:37
We have a jam packed episode filled with tons of music you may have never heard as well as a couple of tracks that you certainly won't want to hear again! Aaron and Chris take you through a journey of some of their all-time favorite hard rock and metal cover songs in this special edition of the Radio Sucks Radio Show - Under Covers. In this episode, you will get lots of great cover songs performed by artists such as Sebastian Bach, Metallica, Ace Frehley, Ugly Kid Joe, and Tuff among many others.  We also introduce a new segment to the show this week with 'Defend Your iPod'. In this new feature, Aaron and Chris put each other on trial over a song that is found on each others iPod. We think you will find the choices and revelations in this segment riveting, revolting, and downright weird. The only clue we'll give you is one song is angelic while the other explains how a redneck outing can be just what the doctor ordered when you lose an appendage. There's lots of music-y goodness for your head holes in this one. Hope you dig it!  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
02 Feb 2012Episode 19 - Eric Carr Discussion01:01:22
A Sister’s Culminating Tribute & Mom’s a Groupie? In Episode 19 we chat with Loretta Caravello, sibling of the late, great Eric Carr of KISS fame.  Eric was taken way too early from the rock music world and Loretta has continued to keep his memory alive with the recent release of ‘Unfinished Business’; an album featuring now-completed versions of Eric’s songs that were previously incomplete. The songs are rounded out by a cast of special guests from the rock and metal world including Bruce Kulick (KISS), John Humphrey (Seether), and Ted Poley (Danger Danger) among others. The discussion starts with talk of the new album including Loretta’s memory of discovering Eric’s 1980 KISS audition tape and how his rendition of Shandi was the only track recorded in stereo on the tape, thus allowing its completion on Unfinished Business. Chris goes on to tell Loretta his Eric Carr story that involves car trouble after a KISS concert and his mother being mistaken for a lovesick groupie. Listen to the story, it makes more sense. Kulicks, Frehleys, Wizards & Merchandise, Oh My! Loretta tells Aaron & Chris about Eric’s bond with Bruce Kulick and Ace Frehley over the years and expounds on the stories of Eric being restricted from playing with Ace on the ‘Breakout’ track with Frehley’s Comet. She also clears up the mystery floating around about Vinnie Vincent’s supposed ownership of Eric’s makeup design. This rumor has been around quite a while and you’ll get to hear her thoughts on this topic. Loretta lets us know of some future Eric Carr-related endeavors down the road including a trading card set that will feature many candid photos taken by Eric himself during his time with KISS. From Stove Repair to Stadiums We discuss Eric’s meteoric rise from being a stove repairman playing small clubs to playing packed stadiums on the other side of the world just a few months later. Loretta tells us about the call Eric received from Bill Aucoin telling him that he was a member of the band. This just scratches the surface of what we talked about so go check out the episode and enjoy this trip down the Eric Carr memory lane and be sure to pick up Unfinished Business at www.ericcarr.com!
