I understand that you’re worried and scared about the looting and property destruction that you are seeing. But imagine how hurt you would be to see other people express more care for replaceable material objects than for the lives of your loved ones. How hurt you must be to protest like this in the middle of a pandemic. Imagine the exhaustion of fighting against the same state violence that your ancestors fought against.

12 Jun 2020 | #LettersForBlackLives - Chinese Mandarin // Read by Chloe Gong // #BlackLivesMatter | 00:05:51
A reading of the Letters for Black Lives translated into Chinese Mandarin. Written and edited by the Letters For Black Lives Team. Translated by the #Translation-Burmese Team. Read by Chloe Gong. Video available on: Transcripts of the letter below and also available at: // 亲爱的爸爸妈妈、叔叔阿姨、爷爷奶奶、外公外婆、家人们: 我们需要谈一谈。

06 May 2022 | 143 // MyKhanh Shelton // SVP of Equity & Inclusion, WarnerMedia | 01:01:28
MyKhanh Shelton, SVP of Equity and Inclusion at WarnerMedia, joins Jerry to share her story of her belief in using media to help bring equity and inclusion to elevate Asian American and other marginalized communities. Listen today to learn about her career path from law, inclusion strategist, to media executive who's using her platform to amplify and uplift all of us. Meet MyKhanh in her own words: My 20+ years of experience as a lawyer and inclusion strategist give me the unique background and ability to develop safe and equitable work cultures that drive business productivity, innovation, creativity, and profitability. I place a premium on analytics, counseling, and training to achieve business results. I work to uncover root causes as a means to devise data-driven solutions that produce institutional change. As Senior Vice President, 21st Century Fox Global Inclusion, I worked with senior executives to conceptualize and drive strategic initiatives to increase diversity and foster inclusion in corporate and tv/film production environments. I led a dedicated team to launch first-of-its-kind initiatives, including Inclusion Week (uniting colleagues around the world in conversation with innovators, artists and academics to draw out, examine and enhance inclusive attitudes and behaviors); the Fox DP (Cinematographers) Lab; and the Filmmakers Lab. Prior to that, as Senior Vice President, Employment Law, I was trusted and acknowledged for consistently finding win-win solutions in contentious circumstances, building consensus, accruing buy-in for change initiatives and working through competing interests. I transformed mandatory harassment training into solutions-oriented, engaging opportunities to inspire and equip employees to create safe and inclusive workplaces, resulting in increased productivity and decreased legal risks. I’m passionate about eliminating barriers for people from underrepresented groups and am proud to sit on the board of Facing History and Ourselves, an international non-profit that engages students in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. 23 Nov 2021 | 132 // Kanwar Singh // Technologist & Army Officer // Serving with Inclusion | 00:41:10
Kanwar Singh, a technologist by day and also a Signal Officer in the US Army Massachusetts National Guard, joins Jerry to share about his journey to America to pursue higher education, what led to him joining the National Guard, and the challenges he has faced to ensure accommodation for him and others religious beliefs. We thank Officer Singh, the US Army, and the Department of Defense for making this interview possible. Meet Kanwar Singh In June 2014, then-SPC Singh took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam and scored in the top one percent. Instead of embracing him and giving him an equal opportunity to prove his abilities, the U.S. military subjected him to a frustrating bureaucratic process that lasted nearly two years. In January 2015, then-SPC Singh joined Boston University’s ROTC program and participated in all field exercises but was not permitted to do so in uniform. In May 2015, he was selected for the Massachusetts Army National Guard’s State Officer Candidate School and later enlisted in the Massachusetts National Guard. At this point, then-SPC Singh submitted a religious accommodation request. While his request was pending, then-SPC Singh was segregated from his battalion and not issued an Army uniform. In December 2015, he met Secretary of Defense Ash Carter at a Harvard University event and publicly asked him whether he would support equal opportunity for Sikhs who wish to serve in the U.S. military. The Defense Secretary applauded then-SPC Singh’s desire to serve and emphasized the importance of diversity in our nation’s military. In March 2016, while his accommodation request was still pending, then-SPC Singh was asked if he would cut his hair and remove his turban in violation of his religion in order to attend Basic Combat Training. In response, the Sikh Coalition and its partners at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and the law firm McDermott Will & Emery filed a lawsuit on Specialist Singh’s behalf. IMPACT In August 2018, then-Second Lieutenant (2LT) Kanwar Singh successfully graduated from Army Officer Candidate School as part of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. In February 2021, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. 1LT Singh is now responsible for leading soldiers during humanitarian, homeland security, and combat operations as a Signal Corps officer. Dear Asian Americans, Continue telling your stories... Keep fighting for what you believe in... we live better than any group of people in the world in history. I think that we have the ability to hold onto our culture, I think that we have the ability to assimilate, and I think that with all the challenges that we face, every community faces challenges, we're at a point in time where it's better to be alive now, it doesn't seem like it sometimes, better than any time in history. We're living in, with all of its faults and flaws, the greatest nation on earth. And we're so privileged to have parents, generally that support us, if nothing else, siblings, camaraderie. And look at Jerry and Rajiv sitting here talking and having this conversation in the middle of the day when we probably should be working jobs as a lawyer and as a doctor, and we get to do this in Burbank while the sun is shining and do whatever we want. If that's not inspiration for you. I don't know what is. Love, Rajiv ***** Meet Rajiv Satyal on Episode 003 of Dear Asian Americans! I launched my advocacy in Adweek earlier this year by writing a piece called: “My People Are Dying In Silence — And I’m Here With A Megaphone” calling out the marketing and advertising industry not just to care, but to act. My work for the community has been featured on NBC News, CBS, FOX, The Wall Street Journal, and CNBC I was one of the first 100 executives to sign the StandWithAsianAmericans letter in the Wall Street Journal. 09 Jun 2020 | #LettersForBlackLives - Tamil // Read by Nantha Rajdenran // #BlackLivesMatter | 00:08:30
A reading of the Letters for Black Lives translated into Tamil. Written and edited by the Letters For Black Lives Team. Translated by the #Translation-Burmese Team. Read by Nantha Rajendran. Video available on: Transcripts of the letter below and also available at: // Mom, Dad, Uncle, Auntie, Grandfather, Grandmother
We need to talk.
You may not have many Black friends, colleagues, or acquaintances, but I do. Black people are a fundamental part of my life: they are my friends, my neighbors, my family. I am scared for them. Recently, in Minnesota, a white police officer killed a Black man named George Floyd by kneeling on his neck for almost 9 minutes—ignoring his repeated cries that he was unable to breathe. Two more police officers helped pin Floyd down, while a fourth, Asian officer stood guard and didn't intervene. Floyd is not alone: Already this year, police officers killed Dreasjon Reed in Indiana and Tony McDade in Florida in May, and Breonna Taylor in Kentucky in March. An ex-detective killed Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia in February.
This is a terrifying reality that the Black people I care about live with every day. You might be thinking: We are also a minority. We’ve managed to come to America with nothing and built good lives for ourselves despite discrimination, so why can’t they? I want to share with you how I see things. I am telling you this out of love, because I want all of us, including myself, to do better. For the most part, when we walk down the street, people do not view us as a threat. We do not leave our homes, wondering whether or not we will return that day. We don't fear that we may die if we're pulled over by the police. This is not the case for our Black friends.

Re-Air of Episode 148 from May 20th, 2022 // Danny Taing, Founder & CEO of Bokksu, shares his journey from academia, tech, and founding Bokksu, a direct-to-consumer snack subscription and e-grocer highlighting snacks from Japan and beyond. Learn more at bokksu.com and @bokksu everywhere. Meet Danny The son of Cambodian-Chinese refugees, Danny was born in NYC and raised in NJ. He received a dual Bachelor's in Psychology and Communication, and a Master’s in Sociology, all from Stanford University. He then worked as a marketing strategist at Google HQ. After that, he relocated to Japan for a position at Rakuten. It was there, during the four years he spent living and working in Tokyo, that he developed his deep love of Japanese food and culture (as well as met his wonderful husband). Following Rakuten, Taing returned to New York to study Computer Science at Columbia University. Inspired by his passion for Japanese culture, Asian-American representation, and entrepreneurship, Taing founded Bokksu in 2015 with $5,000 of his own savings. Utilizing every skill and contact he had, Taing was able to go from concept to launch in just three months, without an additional penny of outside funding. And he sold through his first run of boxes in less than a week. Today, the company is valued at $100M and employs a staff of 50, 80% of whom are BIPOC, female, and/or LGBTQ+; a metric Taing is particularly proud of. In his spare time, Danny is an avid rock climber, fierce board game competitor, and, along with his husband, anime binge-watcher. 06 Jul 2021 | 120 // Simran Jeet Singh // Scholar | Activist | Author // Fight For Equality | 01:01:19
Simran Jeet Singh joins Jerry on Episode 120 to share his story of being an Indian American of Sikh faith, his journey through academics into activism, and the legacy he wants to leave for future generations. Learn more about Simran at SimranJeetSingh.org About Simran This past year, Simran added author to his resume with the release of his best-selling children's book from Penguin Random House (Kokila), Fauja Singh Keeps Going: The True Story of the Oldest Person to Ever Run a Marathon. He is currently completing an adult non-fiction book for Penguin Random House (Riverhead) entitled More of This Please: Sikh Wisdom for the Soul. Growing up as a turban-wearing, brown-skinned, beard-loving Sikh in South Texas, Simran learned early that marginalized groups will not lecture their way into dignity and that empathy is truly built when people get to know each other as human beings. This realization is what brought him into the deep work of empathy-building as an approach for personal development and social change. . Simran is a highly sought-out speaker on diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and anti-racism. His thought leadership extends across corporate, university, and government settings, and his work has been featured in various outlets, including NPR, CNN, BBC, TIME, The Washington Post, and The New York Times. Simran is especially passionate about creating more cohesion, equity, and joy for all stakeholders.
