We thought with Ben Affleck playing a worn and tired Batman, they could easily make it the same canon and fill in the backstory on television... but that wasn't the case at all!  Instead, we get Ben Mckenzie's Jim Gordon forced to play with dirty cop Harvey Bullock and the devious youths who will one day become the Dark Knight's greatest foes!

This week we review the season 2 premiere of 'Gotham', "Damned If You Do..."  Jim Gordon has been demoted.  Penguin rules the Gotham underworld.  Bruce and Alfred search for a way into the mysterious cave of Thomas Wayne, and Barbara finds a new home in Arkham Asylum -- all while a mysterious new player, Theo Galavan, enters the political arena.  Join us as we discuss the moral integrity of Captain Essen and Jim Gordon as they find their way into more troubles than they had previously imagined!  The first chapter of 'Rise of the Villains' has arrived!  Is 'Gotham' still worth watching?  Has it redeemed itself from the previous season? And what shall we make of this silly Zaardon character? 

When last we left Oliver Queen, he had renounced his status as the Starling City viglante known as the Arrow, and moved on to a new life with Felicity Smoak. Newly resurrected Thea stayed behind with Laurel and Diggle to carry on the work of Team Arrow, and Malcolm Merlyn was settling into his new role as Ra's Al Ghul: Leader of the League if Assassins!  What new challenges await Ollie now that he's retired? Will he stay retired for long?  Well, no. Of course not.  With a new moniker and a new, deadly villain (Damien Darhk) to defeat, Oliver must rebuild the relationships he destroyed as heir to the demon's throne, as well as keep the relationships he's nurtured from becoming so much ash.  And of course, there's also that Flash/Arrow crossover and the build up to DC's Legends of Tomorrow to worry about...

'Gotham' 2x02 - "Knock Knock" is reviewed.  Jerome, with the Maniax, has begun a blood curdling journey of murder and mutilation! But it's a new day in Gotham City according to newly promoted Comissioner Sarah Essen.  With the Maniax fighting for control of the gang, Bruce firing Alfred for smashing his father's computer, and Jim being lured away from police headquarters by his nutjob ex Barbara, "Knock Knock" seems to be at a level of cartoon that we simply could not have anticipated... but is that a good thing?

From 1990 to 1991, John Wesley Shipp portrayed Barry Allen, a.k.a. the Flash on a television series that lasted just one season. How does it stack up as a series today?  How does it stack up to its contemporaries?  Should it be included in the newly emerging multiverse that CW's 'The Flash' is constructing?  With Amanda Pays (Dr. Tina McGee), Vito D'Ambrosio (Anthony Bellows), and Mark Hamill (The Trickster) all reprising their roles from the classic series and John Wesley Shipp portraying a particularly (at times) cagey Henry Allen, we wonder...

From Nick Pike's poor man's Kurt Russell to the questionable hair growth of Barry Allen's clone Pollux, we're talking the 90's Flash series!

So we watched 'Vixen', CW Seed's exclusive web series 'Vixen'.  Compelling female superhero origin? Check. Crossover with well-known established 'Arrow' and 'The Flash' universe characters? Check. Introduction to magic in said universe? Check.  But what of execution?  Did Arrow and Flash come off correctly (even with Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin providing voice work)?  Was there enough meat and potatoes in the six five-minute episodes to make it truly satisfying, or was this just an awkward first look at what could become a truly cool character within the mythos of the CW 'verse?

'Arrow' 4x04 - 'Green Arrow' Review

This episode we talk the first episode of 'Arrow' season 4, "Green Arrow"!  Oliver and Felicity are called back to the newly renamed Star City when Damien Darhk and his army of ghosts begin an endless crime wave on the city with the hopes of destroying it!  With Damien displaying healthy doses of candor, ill-will, and magic, Oliver finds himself at odds with everyone on his old team. From Diggle's inability to forgive him for his actions with the League of Assassins, to Speedy's increasingly violent behavior, things are going to be especially rocky for Team Arrow this year -- especially given that last scene in the grave yard! WTF!?

With the GCPD diminished after the attack by Jerome and the Maniax, Gordon aims to find Jerome and put an end to the insanity brewing in his city.  Jerome attempts to kill his father and plant evidence that his father was the one who broke him out of Arkham, and then puts on a deadly magic show -- far more deadly than Jerome even imagined! But could the insanity continue further? Come with us as we review 'Gotham' 2x02 - 'The Last Laugh' and discuss what might have been a true 'jump the shark' moment in this controversial prequel series!

'The Flash' 2x01 - 'The Man Who Saved Central City' Review

It's been six months since the Flash saved Central City from a massive singularity, and as the city prepares to embrace their hero with Flash Day, Barry finds himself shutting himself off from his friends and family.  Harrison Wells has left STAR Labs to him under the stipulation that he watch a video -- Wells' last will and testament -- but Barry is afraid of its contents.

Meanwhile, Caitlyn has begun working under Dr. Tina McGee at Mercury Labs, Cisco is working for Joe under the new metahuman task force, and Iris has become convinced that they must force Barry into accepting the team's help.  With a new metahuman from Earth-2 coming to kill The Flash at the behest of the mysterious Zoom, Barry will need all the help he can get!

'Arrow' 4x02 - 'The Candidate' Review

Team Arrow is kicking ass, but Thea is enjoying the fight a little too much! An old Queen family friend decides to run for Mayor, but as everyone knows, Mayors don't last for long in Star City!  In this case, Damien Darhk has decided to have Anarky grab the new candidate's daughter to pressure her into dropping out of the race! While looking for the kidnapper, Thea crosses the line, and all of this of course gives Laurel an idea that no one should ever have: let's raise the dead!  Just one more reason to make the unrelenting Quentin Lance hate Team Arrow even more!

The new GCPD captain hangs a lantern on some issues we had in "The Last Laugh", and assembles a strike force with his new right-hand man, Detective Jim Gordon! Meanwhile, Theo Galavan holds Penguin's mother captive in order to assure that Oswald takes out the mayoral candidates!  Edward almost blows a date with Ms. Kringle, and Alfred slaps Selina Kyle and sends Bruce to training after a long, hard day at prep school!  So how did 'Gotham' 2x04 - "Strike Force" fare in our minds?  What did you think?

'Arrow' 4x03 - 'Restoration' Review

So Laurel and Thea have gone all modern-day superhero Thelma and Louise on us, and have stolen Sarah's body from the cemetary. One short trip to Nanda Parbat later, and they're ready to start haggling with the new Ra's al Ghul over whether or not they're allowed to restore Sara's dead body in the Lazarus pit. Oh, also, they totally want to fix Thea's burgeoning bloodlust.

Speaking of restoration, Felicity has decided she's had enough of Oliver and Diggle acting like a couple of children.  So time to restore that relationship! Also, Double Down and Damien Darhk! Yay alliterative villain names

'Supergirl' 1x01 'Pilot' Review

Flying quickly between tired, played-out superhero procedural, fresh new feministic jam, frantic frivolous cheese fest, and badass action drama, 'Supergirl' is uneven at best.  It's not the comic book adaptation we necessarily want or need. We have so many to choose from these days... It may appear too heavy-handed at times.  It seems that it's trying a bit too hard.  But it's not terrible.  It's not even always mediocre. 'Arrow' 4x04 - 'Beyond Redemption' Review

Well, Oliver announces that he's running for mayor of Star City. No one takes him seriously. Big shock.  Speaking of big shocks, Laurel decides to show Quentin that Sara's alive! Bad idea.  But Oliver and Lance are working together, and things seem amiable! Amazing! Except Oliver finds out that Quentin is working with Damien Darhk.  So the two must have words. Oh, and Mr. Terrific and Felicity have some Ray-centric adventures while Thea begings running Oliver's campaign! Oh, and there's a new lair!  A pretty new Arrow Cave from Cisco, you guys!

'Gotham' 2x06 - 'By Fire' Review

Selina makes Jim Gordon promise to protect Bridget, but Jim may be making promises he can't keep, according to Captain Barnes.  Meanwhile, so many burned bodies! Okay, so two.  And Butch has a hammer hand! Lame! I specifically seem to remember mention of a chainsaw hand.  Sigh. Guess 'Ash vs Evil Dead' will give me that.  So as per in the comics, Silver St Cloud is only there to needlessly distract Bruce from being a bad ass.  And Edward Nygma lays some pipe and then crushes some windpipe.  Ahem.  So Gotham! Woo! What did you think of this episode?

'The Flash' 2x04 - 'The Fury of Firestorm' Review

Iris has a brother! We bet anything we know his name... Also, Iris' mother is about to croak! And everything else in the episode is awesome! From Barry and Patty chemistry to dickish scientist being a dick, to J. Jackson becoming the answer to Stein's terrible Firestorm matrix problems!  Oh, and can I just say HELL YES King Shark!?  Not the best episode of 'The Flash', but we got King Shark being taken down by Harrison Wells... and Harrison Wells being spotted by Dr. Tina McGee! You know, the lady from that old Flash thing... Wonder why they're bringing HER in again... and again... and again...

'Constantine' 1x14 - 'Final Girl' Script Review

Daniel Cerone has graced us with a free-to-download pdf of an unproduced script for the sadly cancelled series 'Constantine'.  As a special episode for this week, we decided to read the script (let's not kid ourselves, we were going to anyway!), and give you a recap and review of the episode!

When a group of friends kill the most annoying bastard in town, he comes back as a Meat Cutter, a zombie killer that is a lot like Jason Vorhees, but with goat skin strapped to his face instead of a hockey mask. Of course, this isn't the first time Judith has seen something like this.  Who's Judith? Just one of the old gang from Newcastle.  She's found meaning in tracking these Meat Cutters down all over the country. Of course, Constantine rightfully believes that there's something more sinister going on.

'Arrow' 4x05 - 'Haunted'Review

 

Laurel, as usual, is an idiot, and pretty much no matter how you look at it, this is the worst she's been in a while.  She's just terrible.  But everyone should relax! John Constantine is finally here!  Here Constantine is in both flashback and present day form defeating evil with ancient incantations and his quick british wit!  We've missed the bloke for sure!  Meanwhile, Quentin Lance finds an unlikely ally in Diggle, and the two embark on a journey to erase a number of names on a list of some sort and find out why Andy Diggle (John's brother) had to die!

'Gotham' 2x07 - 'Mommy's Little Monster' Review

Oh, there are so many things wrong with Gotham these days. Theo Galavan is mayor, Jim Gordon is a murderer at the behest of Penguin, Selina is being ousted by a true Melrose Place type who's only 14.  Where will the drama end?  Don't ask Harvey Bullock, for such questions are above his pay grade and below his sense of wonder.  But what of Butch's new found freedom?  How does Penguin react to the death of his beloved mother?  And how should we react to the fact that 'Gotham' s quickly becoming the most 'Rambo' of the DCTV series so far?

'Supergirl' 1x02 - 'Stronger Together'

 

The Berlanti team struggle to make Supergirl an interesting show.  'Supergirl' is as sloppy as its lead character is, creating oil spills and water logged aircraft for every life it saves.  With a hellgrammite on the loose and Kara's aunt Astra being particularly nuts, there's a lot going on this episode--including Cat Grant's unrealistic demands that one of her staff--namely James Olsen--get her an interview with Supergirl or else!  There's a whole lot of nothing going on for the second episode of 'Supergirl', and we're talking about it right now!

'The Flash' 2x05 - 'The Darkness and the Light' Review

 

Harrison Wells from Earth-2 is now running around trying to help Barry Allen stop Zoom! Except Jay Garrick doesn't trust Wells, and neither does Cisco, Caitlin, Joe, or Iris.  Only Barry seems to be inexplicably okay with his former mentor/arch nemesis returning in the form of an alternate world doppleganger.  Of course, Dr. Light of Earth-2 also shows up, and leaves Barry blind--just in time for his date with Patty!

'Supergirl' 1x03 - 'Fight or Flight' Review

Reactron, a Superman villain that Clark has never been able to defeat comes looking for Kara, and she refuses to get help from her cousin.  What she also refuses to do? Acknowledge the extremely obvious undying love that her best friend Winn has for her.  Of course, there's at least a fairly good chance he'll become Toyman given his name and all the toys on his desk.  Probably wasn't the best idea for James to come in throwing Superman's real identity around, was it?  Sigh.

'Gotham' 2x08 'Tonight's the Night' Review

 

Theo Galavan has finally given Barbara what she wants: permission to kill Jim Gordon.  So of course, she decides she has to marry him. Or something. Not a lot is very clear with Barbara when it comes to character motivation. Hell, come to think of it, Gordon's got some weird shit to answer for, too. Like why kiss Barbara in the interrogation room? I know it's to lead her on, but everyone acknowledges she's laying a trap.  Everyone knows, right?  Sigh. Oh, and Edward Nygma and the mystery of the stolen finger sandwich!

'The Flash' 2x06 - 'Enter Zoom' Review

So Barry is almost better from being paralyzed by Zoom, but his head is really not in the game!  He's lying to Patty, and not even covering his tracks very well... so perfect time for Gorilla Grodd to come back -- and kidnap Caitlin no less!  Time for Harry Wells of Earth-2 to throw on a Reverse Flash costume and give the Eobard persona the old college try!  But wait, Henry Allen is back, and he might be able to get Barry back in the suit just in time to help the team!

'Arrow' 2x06 - 'Lost Souls' Review

 

Seriously, if we didn't have a podcast where we talked about 'Arrow'... well, honestly, we'd still be watching it and bitching about it. I can't help but wonder who the 'Lost Souls' of the title are.  The writers?  While there was some good in this episode (Ray), it is mostly overshadowed by a boring plot which honestly just felt like it was 'Arrow' doing its part to build up to 'Legends of Tomorrow'.  Not much else happens in this episode, really.  Felicity blames herself, Ollie wonders what he did that was so wrong (aside from texting Felicity's mom), and Quentin has a meet cute. Sigh.  Oh, and so does Thea.  Folk be hooking up, ya'll.

'Arrow' 4x07 - 'Brotherhood' Review

 

So Andy Diggle is back.  Not as a ghost... well, I guess he his, kinda.  So Diggle wants to take him back, but doesnt want the team to help.  Of course the team is going to help!  Even Ray! Also, Captain Lance grows some big shiny balls, and Damien Darhk continues to be one scary mother!  Until Thea shows up... Speaking of Thea, she's dating Oliver's campaign manager and receiving offers to kill pedophiles from her dad--all in the name of sating that damned bloodlust.  Sigh, good times.

'Gotham' 2x09 - 'A Bitter Pill to Swallow' Review

Last week may have been one of the worst episodes of 'Gotham' yet, but this one may be a ship-righter!  Gordon dodges assassination attempts, Captain Barnes is a badass (and really heartfelt when needed), and despite our worries, Eduardo the rock-a-billy cannibal was actually a lot of fun!  We have some good times with Edward Nygma as he tries to coax Penguin into mentoring him on his new life of murder while young Bruce attempts to disobey a very cross Alfred!

Well, due to CBS rescheduling out of respect for the victims of the Paris bombings, we'll be reviewing the 5th episode of 'Supergirl' season 1, "Livewire"!  Listen as we argue over Livewire's slightly more believable origin story!  Marvel (sorry, uh, ... DC?) at how many HILARIOUS lines we thought there were in this episode, and gasp as we heap praise after praise upon Calista Flockhart!  Also: Bitching about Helen Slater, passive aggressive Mother tropes, and bad telescope science!

'The Flash' 2x07 - 'Gorilla Warfare' Review

So Barry is almost better from being paralized by Zoom, but his head is really not in the game!  He's lying to Patty, and not even covering his tracks very well... so perfect time for Gorilla Grodd to come back -- and kidknap Caitlin no less!  Time for Harry Wells of Earth-2 to throw on a Reverse Flash costume and give the Eobard persona the old college try!  But wait, Henry Allen is back, and he might be able to get Barry back in the suit just in time to help the team!

'Gotham' 2x10 - 'Son of Gotham' Review

 

Jim Gordon has to deal with Theo Galavan getting out of prison due to lack of evidence, Bruce Wayne gets pulled into a back room where he'll lose fingers unless Silver St Cloud tells The Knife who killed The Waynes, and Penguin awakes to the confessions of Edward Nygma who hopes for a mentor to guide him in his new life of murder!  Hell of a fun episode! Especially when Alfred pulls his gun and fights Tabitha Galavan!

'Supergirl' 1x04 - 'How Does She Do It?' Review

 

Kara notices a drone following her, and quickly finds herself watching Cat Grant's young son while the DEO tries to track down a bomber/former employee of Maxwell Lord!  Kara sees red eyes Henshaw, and Winn plays video games with Cat's kid! James and Lucy are getting back together. Woo.  This might have been a better episode if CBS didn't switch the episodes up, but it's still pretty good!  We might be having a great time with Maxwell Lord!

This is the last part of the first part of the second season!  Jim Gordon just woke up to find himself in the company of Penguin and Edward Nygma!  Alfred just woke up in a junkyard!  Bruce just woke up in Theo Galavan's insideous clutches!  Will Silver wake up in time to make a positive difference?  So much crazy awesome on this fall finale of 'Gotham', and we're chomping at the bit to see what comes next in February!

General Sam Lane, universally reviled anti-alien dick is in town.  He's being mean to the DEO, and so is his daughter Lucy (who really isn't very impressed with Supergirl).  What's more, Cat Grant's mother, another universally reviled dick, is in town.  She's being mean to Cat.  So Cat is being mean to Kara.  And even if Kara, Winn, and James get to keep their only normal tradition of having game night, it's going to be ruined because James invited Lucy. Of course, that all might be ruined because of the army's new alien-hunting android Red Tornado being let loose on National City thanks to Kara's anger getting the best of her.  Why is she so angry, anyway?  It could be all those dicks being mean to her and her friends, but apparently there is a Cousin OIiver styled anger behind Kara's anger...

SPOILERS/NSFW - This episode we review "Dark Waters", the ninth episode of the fourth season of 'Arrow'.  After Damien Darhk commands a terrorist attack on the Starling Bay that Oliver and his campaign staff and supporters are trying to clean up, Ollie decides to out Damien Darhk on television.  Not a good idea.

On the fun side, Felicity at least got to see that her mom and Captain Lance are bumping uglies before she got lead riddled to the most haunting rendition of Little Drummer Boy we've ever heard!  Not to say that Felicity is in any real danger. They really hammered us with those reminders of her being Jewish... we take that as a "no rocks on the grave" sign.

SPOILERS/NSFW - What a crazy episode of Supergirl, folks! Looks like the end times for the people of National City, cause there are explosions and earthquakes, looting, and no Supergirl to be found! Looks like Kara activated her solar flare ability on Red Tornado, so she is officially human for a day! See what I did there?  Yeah, I didn't think it was very clever, either!  But Hank Henshaw's got a secret that's about to be spilled, and holy cow is it a doozie! Well, less of a doozie and more of a martian. Yeah. And we get to see Chas from Constantine play a weird Klingon version of Jemm. It's really pretty disconcerting. Oh, and Winn goes to the DARK SIDE!

SPOILER/NSFW - Mark Hamil is back as the Trickster in Central City, and he's teaming with Captain Cold and Weather Wizard to kill the Flash! Or maybe just Weather Wizard. Snart is in devlopment at the moment. Speaking of development, Jay and Caitlin are finally moving towards something interesting it seems, while Iris FINALLY breaks and tells Joe about Wally's existence... and of course, we wind up just loving Joe more.  Can we just have Mark Hamil on every episode though? Please?

Also, Zoom and Wells? Sigh, that's not going to turn out well. Or wells. HA-HA!

Toyman escapes from prison, contacts his son Winn, and all manner of crazy poo happens!  Winn has to talk to deep cut Batman character Cameron Chase, Winn gets all vulnerable and lets those emotions (and lips) fly! And I don't think there's a reset button on this one, kids!  Oh, and Alex and Maxwell Lord have a saucy off-the-books dinner (I hope everyone keeps their paranoia in their pants)... Speaking of ill-advised behavier, are Lucy and James about to work together?  Is the show really going to show us the "woman doesn't need her man's permission to work" story again?  Kinda. But not totally, thank Rao.  Oh, and things are amping up for J'onn and the White Martians!  Are you guys as excted as we are? Probably. Right?

WARNING: SPOILERS/NSFW - We usually dislike dream sequences that sorta try to create a false sense of peril, but you know what?  The Flash gets so much right, we won't even hold it against them! Hell, we're stoked about this episode!  The Turtle has maybe one of the coolest super powers we've ever seen utilized on screen, and he's a smarmy little bastard to boot! Winking at Barry. What a tool!  A sick tool, too, ya'll. Weirdo to the max!  But that's not all we talk about! 

Patty and Barry might be done for!  Barry keeps Patty at arm's length, treats her kinda bad, and acts like a douche (for just this episode).  Then again, aren't we rushing into things here, Patty?

But not as fun as chatting up young Martin Stein while smoking a doobie!  Oh, and there's like a huge thing that happens with Hawkman!  And Captain Cold and Heatwave are awesome as usual.  So much to talk about...

WARNING: SPOILERS/NSFW - DC on SCREEN #095 - Lucifer 1x01 - Pilot Review | Let's dive into the latest police procedural by FOX, a strangely watered-down adaptation of a Vertigo title by Neil Gaiman!  More important that the controversy of making the Morningstar into a sympathic do-gooder is the, ahem, burning question: Is the show any good?  Well, that's just what Dave and Jason get into in this episode!  Did FOX really make Lucifer into a good guy, or is he simply acting out of his own selfish desires?  Could there be a connection to Constantine? And what of Amenadiel and the on-coming war that will happen if Lucifer does not return to his post in Hell?

WARNING: SPOILERS/NSFW - DC on SCREEN #094 - Supergirl 1x11 - Strange Visitor From Another Planet Review | An anti-alien senator is visiting National City just in time for a white martian to attacK! But who are the white martians, and why do they cause Hank Henshaw such grief?  For the first time in live action, we have seen the horrific eradication of the green martians!  Is there an on-the-nose illegal immigration message throughout this episode? You bet! But as heavy handed as that is, Harewood's Henshaw gives us the chills when he tells us that he will hear his family's screams until the day he dies.  If your qualm with Supergirl thus far has been that the show was less than harrowing, this may be the episode for you!

WARNING: SPOILERS/NSFW - DC on SCREEN #096 - The Flash 2x11 - The Reverse Flash Returns Review | Eobard Thawne has returned to Central City! Or rather, has come to Central City for the first time!  The only way to track him?  Well, Harry rigs a special pair of goggles for Vibe, er, Cisco.  Also, Tina McGee might need a little help... And then the things with Patty's deduced revelations that Barry is the Flash.  Of course, we'll be talking all of these things, as well as the latest developments in curing Jay Garrick (HUNTER ZOLOMON!!!) and the on-coming demise of Iris and Wally's mother!
