21 May 2024 | 45) Loneliness in motherhood with Dr. Naomi | 00:35:39
It can be lonely No- it IS lonely. No matter how much help you can have, friends, family even around you. The truth is - you are the one at night, doing the feeds, the day time, parks, walks, sitting room floor, holding baby and who is holding you? On this episode, we really wanted to call it out - highlight this awful experience many mothers will go through. The loneliness of it all - when you feel you should be enjoying it, grateful, creating magical memories, being social, and well - a hanging out with your new mom friends. The truth is, it's dam lonely. Days we can't shower, get off the floor as we have been up all night, no energy to do anything. It's raining - don't want to get wet - It's sunny - don't want to show my face to crowds of happy vivacious youngsters enjoying their freedom. Maren and Eva sit down with Naomi to discuss this, and hope that, well know that, this will resonate with most listeners. If you want to read more about some research that Naomi had mentioned, please click on the links below As long as you are self- compassionate, you will never walk alone

15 Jan 2024 | DAM Chats 2) Spoiling vs. Nurturing | 00:15:40
On this second episode of the DAM Chat series, we chat about the age-old parenting dilemma of spoiling versus nurturing. Here we look at definitions of spoiling, explore the delicate balance with nurturing, and share our honest experiences as mothers. Navigating the thin line between spoiling and nurturing is our focus, but the reality is trying to grasp the mind of our little ones and how we as parents can change our perception of a moment. Most parents don't think they spoil their child - but the reality is - it's what other people see as they look in. It's not the whole picture of your day - it's just a moment, and we shouldn't beat ourselves up over. It happens to all of us. We aren't corporals raising an army. It's finding our flexibility at that moment.

But we need to check our expectations of these 'lifesaving' 'crucial' 'must have' 'potential new best friends' events. Eva and Maren chat about their own experience, thoughts and hopefully give you, the listener, a different thought when considering playdates.

Sharing our experiences, some you may recognise, some you may not - and hopefully will shed some light and empower you to move through your own Matrescence knowing more than many have ever known. Naomi's journal exercise: Writing in a journal can be useful when we are experiencing times of transition. Journalling helps to make sense of and navigate challenges, and cultivate a deeper sense of self- awareness, mindfulness, and creativity. By expressing thoughts and feelings in a journal, we can gain clarity, insight, and perspective on our lives. (You don’t need a fancy journal to do this, a simple notebook or your phone notes app work just as well) Try answering one or all of these questions, letting your pen do all the work and you might be surprised what comes up for you! 1. Reflect on a moment of joy from today, as a mum 2. Recall a challenge you overcame recently. What strengths did you use to get through it? 3. Think back to a moment where you have felt proud of your parenting 4. What’s surprised you most about becoming a mother? 5. How has your life changed since becoming a mother? 25 Sep 2024 | 67) End of Matrescence month - a conversation | 00:25:45
Ever heard of Matrescence before our monthly series? Many haven't. And what's worse, is there is little information out there for us - except for books like Lucy Jones Matrescence which we reviewed in our BookClub. We welcomed back members of our community who many of you are familiar with - or introducing you to your village. With our resident psychologist Dr Naomi Gibson, a well known postpartum doula herself on her 6 month's check in - Harriet - from nourish and nest, and also one of the most versed women in Matrescence in our intimate village here in Amsterdam - Ilena Standring. We searched high and low, reached out to the four corners of the globe to provide a closing episode of research and facts- but the reality is - there isn't much out there. So this episode- is just Eva and Maren, discussing their final thoughts on this month's series. If any of these episodes resonated with you, or if you feel more need to find out more - share it with your community. We owe it to ourselves, our friends and our village. You are not alone.
19 Jun 2024 | 52) It's Never Too Late to Be Multilingual - with Eowyn from On Raising Bilingual Children | 00:35:10
Raising our multilingual children is hard work. There is no doubt. Old myths of multilingual children developing language slower, or assimilating into the country of residence made some families raise their children in the most simple way they knew how- with just one or two languages. Eowyn is back on the case, showcasing why it's a great for children to understand their parents background, customs, history - never mind communicating with family back in the homelands. She also gives simple strategies to help implement learning a language - and yes, its going to be hard work. Everything worth while takes effort and dedication. This is a great reminder episode as a follow up from the previous episodes (25 and 30) as a subtle supportive voice to keep going. The research and evidence is there. This is to all the international families out there, struggling - and trying to figure out ways to keep home language strong. We see you! We are you! You are not alone.
02 Sep 2024 | DamGoode Bookclub 4) Matrescence by Lucy Jones | 01:08:01
In this episode, Elizabeth sits down with Maren and Eva, after reading their next book: Matrescence - by Lucy Jones. Ever heard of this word? Maybe only heard of it in 2024? Jones's experience exposes a profound cultural failure: the glaring silence around the realities of childbirth and motherhood. This silence leaves countless women unprepared for the physical and emotional upheavals they will face. Society mainly presents a sanitized, romanticized view of pregnancy and motherhood—emphasizing joy and bonding while obscuring the pain, trauma, and identity crises that are just as real. In mainstream media and public discourse, the raw, unvarnished truths of motherhood are often glossed over or ignored altogether. This absence of honest depictions left Jones feeling blindsided, unprepared for the brutal realities of labour, postpartum recovery, and the deep personal transformation that motherhood demands. Without access to real stories that convey the full spectrum of maternal experiences, women are left with dangerously unrealistic expectations. When the harsh realities of motherhood inevitably clash with these expectations, it can lead to profound feelings of disillusionment and betrayal. And we at Dam Parenting have always wanted to put topics like this into focus and have a conversation to find the words, learn ways to help ourselves and be open to listen to others experiences. If you enjoyed this episode, if you learned something new - if you found the words you have been trying to use to express yourself - be sure to share this episode, grab the book, and step foot on your newfound path. We are all waiting to welcome you.

06 Mar 2024 | 27) The good enough perfectionist with Dr. Naomi Gibson | 00:38:59
Dr Naomi is back to discuss perfectionism in parenthood.
In the tumultuous landscape of modern parenthood, the relentless demand to excel in every aspect of nurturing one's children casts a shadow over countless households.
From the battleground of online parental disputes to the scrutinizing gazes of extended family members, and the subtle rivalry among friends underscored by social media shaming, the pressure to attain parental perfection looms large.
Yet, striving for perfection subjects parents to unparalleled stress. And studies have shown that women seem to be more likely to show perfectionism than men - so for any new mothers - this can have a massive impact on our mental health.
Together, Eva, Maren and Dr Naomi will be discussing who this can affect, the signs, and how to go easy on yourself.

14 Feb 2024 | 24) Reparenting ourselves with Dr. Naomi Gibson | 00:38:33
Dr. Naomi is back and together with Eva and Maren they discuss the inevitable topic of reparenting ourselves as we become parents.
Reparenting - in essence- is the process of healing from previous emotional wounds by making small, intentional choices to act in a way that helps you to achieve your goals. It happens when we no longer look to others for love and approval by filling the gaps ourselves.
It's not an easy topic, it's a new way of living - loving yourself, and as a parent that can be very stressful when we have someone who depends on us 24/7. But as the saying goes - we cannot pour from an empty cup.
Let's fill some of your cup up with this episode.

Today, we welcome Emma - a coach specialised in ADHD and advocate for women. Emma's story might not sound familiar to many, as some of us in Amsterdam believe we should be having the home birth - as that's whats been promoted (including our insurance sending us those kraampackets -incase it happens). After all it's not a medical procedure - right? Well, for some of us, past experiences, culture or otherwise, we may feel more comforted in a sterilised clinical setting. And today, Emma is going to share her birth story, and her reflections of the experiences. Would you like to share your own birth story? Drop us a message, we would be delighted to have you on!

It's on socials, its on group chats, so it must be the way. I AM SO TIRED... On this episode, Dr. Naomi and Camille from 'Little baby go to sleep' join Maren and Eva to discuss the impact of sleep on the parents. Together, they start the conversation of parents taking a holistic look at the situation, understanding the reality of the situation and things to consider as new parents. Not everyone chooses to sleep train, many of us still hold our toddlers hands when they fall asleep. There is no right or wrong way to do things. This conversation is to highlight, like in DAMChats episode 10 The Bedtime Bond how everyone has their own approach and not to feel like you should be doing something you may feel is mainstream if you are not comfortable with it.
