13 Feb 2023Episode 165 The first rule of Farmer John's MTB Park is...01:03:21

Welcome to Cycle Systems Online podcasts for 2023. It's great to be back with a stellar episode with John Thorpe from https://fjmtb.com/

From 1980s tracker bikes through to legendary MTB night races and a cult following in the Manchester area, John has built up a reputation for great riding, racing and partying at his own bike park.

Marple is no Marin County, but John can certainly match Gary Fisher for a good yarn and the race weekends have rivalled anything at Repack back in those heady days.

28 Feb 2023Episode 163 eBikes and the Modern Workshop00:50:30

John Galloway was a pro mechanic in the 1990s and finished up pretty much when Sean started out.

In this week's episode they look at how a 1990s mechanic would fare in a modern workshop and vice versa!

This, of course gives us the excuse to talk about eBikes, disc brakes and electronic Rohloff hubs as well as cantilever brakes, broken anodised purple components and wheelbuilding. Amazingly, gravel bikes, the Girvan flex stem and John's drop barred mountain bikes don't get a look in.

20 Mar 2023Episode 164: Shimano Cues with Mike Stead00:46:24

While the evil overlords of the bike industry force us to use disc brakes on our road bikes, D shaped steerers that seem to break quite often and internal routing that would confound a Jack Russell terrier, Shimano have gone totally off message and (gasp) released an entire family of components that work together effortlessly.

It is almost as if, in their Bond Villain lairs they are listening to us mechanics rant about non compatible shifters and press fit bottom brackets! Keep it up, folks. The ever insightful Mike Stead from Road.cc joins us for an in depth look.

25 Oct 2021Episode 126: Revenge of the CTC Nerd Army00:44:59
Remember when the Cyclist Touring club geeks were the butt of all jokes? Plastic bags full of oily components, a 30 year old steel touring bike and a Carradice saddle bag that was older than Grandad?Well, guess what. Turns out they were preppers for 2021. Not only will their bikes go on forever with no firmware upgrades needed, but cycling touring is the coolest thing right now! With even pro bike teams unsure if they can get components for next season we are all in new territory for bike maintenance, whether you are a pro wrench or home enthusiast, you can’t magic a Di2 mech or hydraulic caliper into existence. In this pod, John and Sean delve into the world of post apocalyptic bike mechanics and try not to get too glum while looking at the best way to keep riding in 2022.China’s 3 day week https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/sep/29/china-hit-by-power-cuts-and-factory-closures-as-energy-crisis-bitesBack to the 1990s https://cyclingtips.com/2017/12/mixing-road-groupsets-what-works-together-and-what-doesnt-2/ Hack your gears https://archercomponents.com/

16 May 2022Episode 147: Starting Out All Over Again00:18:02
Hi, it's Sean here -The world is in a strange place right now...Things we previously felt were stable - such as our careers - are feeling a lot less reliable. It's pretty common to be waking up in the middle of the night worrying if you're going to be able to continue providing for your family.A lot of our past students have been taking their knowledge and skills around bike repair and turning it into a profitable business - either on the side or as a full-time career. The demand is pretty high right now, and there simply aren't enough bike mechanics to go around.Perhaps you too have dreamed of turning your passion for bikes into a side income?Well, funnily enough, as I'm starting a new life in Switzerland, I am also doing just that. I'm setting up a workshop in my garage and aim to do a few services a week of high end bikes for the most demanding customers. I've gone right back to basics, although this time I won't be filling my calendar for 8 hours a day with fixing bikes, even though I'm sure I could and very quickly. If you're inspired to learn more and chat with me, you can visit www.https://go.cyclesystemsonline.com/teamcamp

So, while you have seen endless reports of the new Specialized or Trek models, the Pinarello F12 has flown under many people’s radar, with barely a mention in many ‘Bikes of le Tour’ articles and podcasts. We had such a great time talking to The Campag Kid last week that we have invited him on for a few more shows to fill in the Campagnolo story. Not to fear, as we shall also record a pt 4 to finish where we get right up to the 12 and 13 spd era.To say there were some eye openers in this show is an understatement!
