04 Dec 2020 | S8E10: Ambiguous Grief: Grieving When You Can't Get Closure | 00:41:40
Pandemic, death, divorce, natural disaster, addiction...grief and loss is something we have all experienced. How we define and experience the loss varies. In today’s episode, Terri and Dr. Dom help us understand ambiguous grief. Lady, if you have experienced the physical loss of someone or something while still experiencing them psychologically or the inverse then this episode may give you the language you need to define your experience. Hopefully, this complex conversation between Dr. Dom and Terri will help cultivate the healing you need. Quote of the Day: "I wanted a perfect ending. 15 Feb 2019 | S1E8: How to Find Your Own Self-Care Routine | 00:33:29
It’s the day after Valentine’s Day. How did you spend the day? Were you focused on others or did you take time to care for yourself? Or was it just another day for you? Hopefully, you did something that made you feel good. In this week’s episode, Dom and Terri dive into the importance of self-care...doing the things (whatever they are) that make you feel good. While self-care is a phrase that seems to be tossed around a lot lately, do we know what it really means? How can we engage in it when we have been socialized to believe that doing so is selfish? Per usual, the ladies provide us with real-life examples from their lives and give us practical ways we can apply it to our own. Self-care is not going to look the same for everyone and shout out to all the ladies finding creative ways to pour into themselves! Remember...equate self-care with what they teach us on the plane- put your own oxygen mask on before you assist others. Quote of the Day: “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” - Audre Lorde Takeaways: “Taking care of yourself = keeping your cup full. If you don’t do things to keep your cup full, you have nothing left to give or share with others.” – Paige Burkes Self-care is not selfish. Just because everyone else is consuming a certain type of content doesn't mean you have to do it. Self-care is unique to each person. 14 Jun 2019 | S2E11: I Am Not My Hair... Or Am I? | 00:41:03
In today’s episode, Dom and Terri discuss hair. Now, this is not just a discussion on “Good vs. Bad Hair”, though the ladies briefly touch on it. This is a conversation that begins with a quick history lesson on the Tignon Laws of New Orleans and then moves into modern ways in which our hair is policed, judged, politicized, and criticized. The words we use to describe someone’s hair or the assumptions we make about one another based on how we choose to wear our hair can be hurtful and offensive. Terri and Dom share with us their hair journeys and how they have been impacted by the words of others. Terri’s journey is one you particularly want to pay attention to as many of us can relate to her life-changing story. By the way, what is your hair journey? What are your favorite products? Who’s your stylist? Share it in the H.E.R Space Sanctuary. 09 Oct 2020 | S8E2: All My Skinfolk Ain’t Kinfolk | 00:52:21
Can Black people be racist? NO! However, Black people can be agents of white supremacy and anti-Black. Due to how we have been socialized chances are there are times when we may experience internalized racism. Throughout our socialization there have been systems in place to move us closer to whiteness and as a result, shunning people who do not align with white supremacist heterosexist classist patriarchal ideologies. While some of us have found ways to break free from some of these ideologies, others have doubled down in fully aligning with whiteness. Today, Dr. Dom and Terri discuss those who may look like us but are not for us. Quote of the Day: "Souls that inhabit white bodies can be allies and accomplices in the fight against oppression, in the same way that black folks can be agents and accomplices in promoting, promulgating and protecting white supremacy. As my grandmother once said, conjuring Zora Neale Hurston, “All your skin folk ain’t your kinfolk.” Meaning that you can inhabit a black body and be an agent of white supremacy." - Professor Lawrence Ware Questions that need answers: What do we do about skinfolk that ain’t our kinfolk?
