Director/Producer/Cinematographer Elisa Paloschi is on Cue To Cue today!! I am so excited to be able to bring this interview to you. Elisa has spent the past ten years bringing Driving With Selvi to the world. A documentary about a former child bride who ran away from her abusive husband and became South India’s first female taxi driver.

Yes, you read that correctly Elisa spent ten years working on this documentary! I was dying to know what made Elisa want to take ten years to develop this idea and see it through.  I have the utmost respect and admiration for someone who has that kind of grit. I think most people would have abandoned the idea before it even reached the five-year mark. During the ten years, Elisa made multiple trips to India and with the promise to Selvi that if at the end of the process she didn’t like the film it would never be released! I want to be Elisa when I grow up!! To have that kind of commitment to a project and to the people the project involves says so much about her character.

I am elated that Selvi did like the film and agreed to share her story with the world! Her story is one of strength and perseverance and is now empowering children and woman all over the world to understand that they have value and deserve to treated with love and respect.

Elisa has launched a campaign called Save Her Seat where donating $10 sponsors a girl in India to have the opportunity to see the movie. Selvi serves as a role model to these young girls and empowers them to think about their future and the more children that see this film closer we come to changing the conversation and treatment of women around the world.

Please take a moment to donate and Save Her A Seat

We are going for a solo round today! If you are new here, welcome!

Solo rounds are just that! They are a departure for the long form interviews that happen on a regular basis here, On Cue to Cue.  I pop in from time to time and talk about experience and things artists, including myself, run into along our path to honing our craft and deepening our artistry.

I share challenges, break throughs, and themes/ideas that are coming up for me in the present moment and how they relate to my work and development as an artist and I hope by sharing them,  it can help you connect deeper to yourself and empower you along your journey.

Today, I am talking about the need we can sometimes feel in our craft to be an expert at your craft and have it all figured out. Whether that be in scene work, auditions, writing, jam sessions, coaching, movement, choreography etc... looking like an expert can put us in a tight space as far as having access to our creativity and connecting to our humanity.

Let's talk about the value of having a beginner's mindset and the value it can have to your creativity and work as an artist!

25 Jul 2022Keep Calm And Start Over ;)00:07:57

On this weeks solo round of Cue To Cue, I am exploring something that keeps coming up for me lately. Starting over. The idea of starting over, frankly, has always scared me. It has always made me feel like I have failed in someway. Like I am moving backwards.

But recently, I have come to realize and embody the notion that every time we start over we are not starting over as who we were the first time we started our journey with that particular subject or area of life.

“Don't be afraid to start over again. This time, you're not starting,

From scratch, you're starting from experience.”

01 Jun 2020Mark Cassius: How To Keep Your Creativity And Career Moving Forward!01:21:40

I am elated that Mark and I were finally able to make this conversation happen! I have been after mark for over a year to get him on Cue To Cue! Today is the day!

One sentiment that really stuck with me after my time with Mark is how necessary it is to be in pursuit of what you love in order to stay passionate. Evolution is not something that just comes with time or age, it is something we need to actively pursue. Moving forward and staying curious about the “whispers” we receive, as creatives beings,  is the only way to ensure our growth. It can feel unsettling as artists because it means staying extremely present and tuned with ourselves. No checking out! Being ready and willing to let go of who we think we are as artists and courageous enough to allow ourselves to continually evolve.

To talk to Mark is to be inspired by this idea and to think about it as one of the most exciting journeys as an artist we get to embark on. This is the life of an artist.

In this episode:

  • Why he decided to go back to grad school to get his masters in music Composition after having a successful career for decades
  • The importance of valuing our sift skills as creatives and how to make sure you are bringing them into all areas of your life.
  • How to ensure as a teacher of performers in post-secondary education you are supporting them in their transition into the entertainment industry
  • How to use the rehearsal period as a learning opportunity to hone your interpersonal skills.
  • The importance of learning to put the project first and the ego last.

A little about Mark:

Mark Cassius is a graduate of Sheridan College’s, Music Theatre Performance program. He has been featured on Broadway, in the original Ragtime and revivals of Jesus Christ Superstar and Shenandoah. 30 Jan 2023Julia Juhas: How To Allow The Wisdom Of Your Body To Unlock Your Artist01:10:40

Are you having a hard time finding the light at the end of the tunnel?

This journey can be full of twists and turns and ups and downs and all arounds. It is inevitable. Our realtionship to ourselves and our environment are the very things that will determine how we navigate our journey. Today's episode is there to help us remember ourselves. You are talented, you are worthy and you have the skills to achieve your dreams! You are allowed to have the things you want.

This week, Performing Artist and Embodied Mindful Movement Facilitator Julia Juhas will remind us to get curious about ourselves and change how we treat ourselves. Through digging within our thoughts and removing the part of our body that doubts us, we get to the root cause of our issues and eventually attract the things that we want.

You are talented, you are worthy and you have the skills to achieve your dreams! You are allowed to have the things you want.

In this episode:

  • As creatives, we can't create in a tense body and mind; we need to unlock our hearts so that we can allow our body to process our emotions.
  • Pain is part of life, we just need to develop a healthy relationship with it.
  • Our sympathetic nervous system is only there to help us in a state of emergency, we're not supposed to live there all the time, and I think we tend to; so when we hit a stressful situation, you can't intuitively act because you're already there.
  • The importance of identifying the root cause of our self-doubt and taking accountability of our actions instead of blaming our mishaps to someone else.

In the middle of Julia’s career as a professional dancer and music theatre performer, she suffered two devastating events; a rare knee injury and a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis. Both impacted her basic functionality of movement and almost ended her career as a dancer. These events inspired Julia to shift her approach to movement and yoga to explore a practice that offers more sustainability, functionality, mobility and longevity. Discovering this profound ability to heal through somatic integration, imagery, breath & embodied mindful movement is exactly what inspired Julia’s passion for helping others unravel their tension and pain to live and move with ease.

Now, over 10yrs since her diagnoses Julia is living pain-free and guiding others to do the same. She is still performing, dancing professionally + enjoying a very active lifestyle. Most recently she was featured in The Shaw Festivals Production of White Christmas and played Violet in Capitol Theatres Production of 9 to 5. She has also appeared in numerous films and TV shows such as Guillermo Del Toro's Cabinet of Curiousities which was released this past fall.

Julia offers her services as a PTA (physiotherapist assistant) + Embodied Mindful Movement Coach at the Body Science Therapy clinic as well as private/semi-private mindful movement sessions online + in-home through her company Live With Ease. 06 Jan 2020I Loved It!... And I Wanted To Cry The Whole Time01:26:25

Today we are shaking things up on Cue To Cue! I am bringing the creative team from Songs Songs For A New World on To do a post mortem of the process of putting up the production. Joining us are: Matt Lacas (Co-producer/co-director), Meredith Busteed ( Co-producer/Choreographer/Cast member), Quinton Naughton ( Musical Director) and Me! ( Co-producer, Co-director/Cast member).

It is so rare as performers that we are a part of this process. The lights go down, and as performers, we go on with our lives or onto the next project. But for the creative team, some of the most valuable lessons are in the discussion afters he project comes to a close. This is where a lot of growth occurs.

So why share? What do these talks have to do as a performer? EVERYTHING! I am a huge believer that the more you can understand everyone’s roles in the project you are working on a better collaborator, communicator, and ultimately a better artist.

30 Aug 2021 Charlie David: How To Unleash Your Creative Impulses When Moving In Uncharted Territory01:09:12

Do you wear many hats as a creative artist? How has time management been for you? Are you struggling to keep up trying to be in multiple places at the same time?

Producer/ Director Charlie David joins our conversation this week to reiterate that active communication between the production team is a critical element in time management. We need to let them know when we are in a place of "too much" and welcome the conversation from their side too.

If you can only give 3 mornings a week for a project, then inform your creative team and make that time count. Charlie reminds us that it's not our turn, all the time. We should honour each other's time, space, and dedication in each project.

You can always press pause, figure it out and hopefully come back stronger and better.

 In this episode:

  • Integrity is a confidence builder.
  • The importance of actively listening and actively acknowledging having a growth mindset.
  • How a movie or tv series can incite conversations that we often don't talk about.
  • The importance of active communication in time management.
  • We will give our best work when we are nourished and it comes from absorbing creativity in the community.

A little about Charlie:

29 Aug 2022Help! I Hate Promoting Myself And My Work!00:10:49

Do you hate promoting yourself and you work as an artist? I get it. I used to have all sorts of “head junk” around self-promotion.

I used to have all of the thoughts “I don’t want to bother anyone”, “no one is going to come anyway”, These thoughts I used to your think. It was really just to keep me playing small so I didn’t have to level up. Then I actually worked in sales and got to see how it actually works and it totally changed everything!

If you get weird about getting yourself out there! Today’s episode is for you! Let’s get you going and unstuck!

07 Sep 2020Rosie Callaghan & Matt Lacas: How to Create Opportunity Out Of Thin Air01:13:02

Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue today is Actor/Artistic Director of We Are Here Productions  Matt Lacas and Actor/Singer/Host Rosie Callaghan who encourages us to take the time to tune away. If you can’t find the balance in using social media, it can turn to work, which can turn to stress and then burnout. We need to take a breather and do other things.

Be ready to be inspired!

In this episode:

  • How finding a niche in the Instagram world allowed them to find something that they both enjoy

18 Nov 2019Tim Leyes: How To Secure A Successful Photo Shoot And Ensure A Great Headshot!01:18:38

Tim Leyes is joining me on Cue To Cue Today! Tim is a highly sought after, Toronto based, photographer who has shot some of biggest names in show biz. When you land on his website you will find celebrities such as, Martin Short, Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams and Andrea Martin, just to name a few. He has recently started to shoot in LA which is opening up opportunities for L.A. based performers to be able to work with Tim.

Tim is a real casual guy. I think that is part of his charm. He is warm, friendly, and you can tell he genuinely loves what he does, which allows you to feel comfortable very quickly. I have had a session with Tim and I can tell you when you’re in front of the camera he has a way of making you feel like you possess everything he needs to make it a great shoot. He gets so keyed up while shooting you can’t help but get excited and feel confident about letting go and just going for it.

I have also had the pleasure of sitting on on a few sessions and watching him work and I find it equally enjoyable. He is present and ready to go with each artist and you can see he wants to have the best experience possible.

One thing I like that Tim does is, he will ask you what you usually get seen for in auditions and he will take that into consideration when choosing looks for the shoot. Its simple, but I am not sure every actor thinks about it as much as they should. It's one thing to have pretty photos but if those photos aren’t helping you book auditions then really what’s the point? He will make sure he puts together looks that work for those types and then he will do a few looks that go in a different direction, just so you have them if you need them.

I was excited to talk to Tim about and hear his thoughts on what makes for a successful shoot and how we can maximize our odds to have a great result. What do we need to prepare? Should we always get hair and makeup done? How many looks do we bring? How much touching up is too much? How do you know you have chosen the right photographer to shoot with?

Tim’s expertise and suggestions for performers getting a headshot done were so useful and could save you from having a bad shoot and potentially save you hundreds of dollars by implementing some pretty simples things. Listen up!

16 Aug 2021David Connolly: How To Infuse Advocacy And Activism Into Your Creative Journey And Achieve Your Creative Goals 01:06:04

How do you want to impact the world as an artist?

You are making waves, whether you acknowledge it or not. You get to decide the nature of the waves you make. Sometimes we can underestimate our impact and power as artists to effect change, and that is one of the biggest opportunities we can potentially miss on our artistic journey.

This week, Director/ Teacher/ Advocate, David Connolly reminds us that change and awareness begin when we openly communicate and try to learn how others navigate through the world instead of forcing them into a mold. Conversations lead to understanding and that is where change begins.

Is the fear of failure stopping you from venturing into this new chapter in your life? Is your goal more important than the feeling of being embarrassed? Being afraid that things wouldn't work out as planned is valid.

David reiterates that sometimes healthy fear is a good thing, but we shouldn't let that stop us from pursuing something we are passionate about. Use your voice as an artist and bring your life experiences to create change!

In this episode:

  •  Inspiring someone means being part of the army that allows people to remember that we are more the same than we are different.
  • Trauma is not what happened, it's how you're dealing with what happened.
  • How having a support system impacts your success as an artist.
  • The difference between diversity and inclusion is taking the time to break the mold and learn how others navigate the world.
  • The importance of apprenticeship and continuously learning in improving as an artist.

A little about David:

David Connolly is a recipient of The Premier of Ontario’s Award of Excellence in Applied Arts who holds an Honours Bachelor Degree in Musical Theatre Performance from Sheridan College. Immediately upon graduating, David made his Broadway debut and became the first and only amputee to ever perform there. Thirty years later, the double below-knee amputee remains an optimistic, highly creative idea generator of whose life Dance Magazine wrote, “demonstrates the quintessential balancing act between career and community service.”

In January, 2020, David curated and moderated the first-ever disability inclusion panel at BroadwayCon in New York City to help develop actionable steps to improve disabled representation in arts. He is also an Ambassador for the Shriner's Hospital for Children, and the War Amps Child Amputee Program. For twelve-years, he served as Creative Producer for Fashion Cares in support of the AIDS Committee of Toronto, and has volunteered for the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, Easter Seals, Project Angel Food and The Hincks-Dellcrest Centre for Children's Mental Health.

As the Associate Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment, he has led the creation and implementation of Drayton’s Youth Education Program, an Actor’s Fund of Canada Benefit Cabaret Series and helmed over thirty productions including the Canadian regional theatre premieres of Kinky Boots, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mama Mia! and Newsies. For the screen, David has directed and choreographed several series for CBC Kids as well as projects for CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS and two feature films by director, Deepa Mehta. He has collaborated with artists including Katy Perry, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elton John, Sarah Jessica Parker, kd lang, Patti LaBelle, Sarah Brightman and many others.

As an Educator, he has been an Adjunct Professor and Advisor to the Musical Theatre Performance Programs at Sheridan College, Randolph College, Fanshawe College, St Lawrence College and VanderCook College. He is a recipient of The Waterloo Region Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, and proud member of The Directors Guild of Canada, ACTRA, Equity and The Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

09 Dec 2019Mitchell Marcus on Building A Theatre Company , Honouring Your Mandate, And Distinguishing Your Artistic Path00:52:09

I am elated to bring this episode of Cue To Cue with Founder/ Artistic and Managing Director of The Musical Stage Company, Mitchell Marcus! Mitchell has become an influencer in the Toronto MusicTheatre scene and has been quite successful in a medium where many theatre companies don’t make it past their first season and I have been dying to have a conversation to hear his thoughts on creativity, entrepreneurship and the place of musical theatre in today's ever-shifting arts landscape.

WISDOM: When I asked Mitchell what advice he would give someone who is thinking of starting a theatre company he said, “don’t”, with a laugh and continued to say, if you feel you must go through with it then find the Gap. How are you going to differentiate yourself from every theatre company out there? Do you need to do a show or become a theatre company because that is a totally different undertaking.

In this Episode:

  • What is missing from the Canadian musical theatre scene
  • How to embrace the art of fundraising and get people to support your idea
  • What he believes holds artists back from creating and how you can overcome it
  • How to discern the right path for yourself

A Little about Mitchell:

Mitchell is the founder and Artistic & Managing Director of The Musical Stage Company – Canada’s leading and largest not-for-profit musical theatre company. Over fourteen years, The Musical Stage Company (previously Acting Up Stage Company) productions have been recognized with 61 Dora Award nominations, 11 Dora Awards and 12 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards and programming partnerships have been built with Mirvish, Canadian Stage, AGO, TIFF, Massey Hall, Obsidian Theatre Company, and the Regent Park School of Music amongst others.

Outside of The Musical Stage Company, Mitchell was the Associate Producer for the inaugural six years of Luminato, producing over 100 productions for one-million attendees annually. Mitchell has twice been the Creative Producer for the Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize as well as the producer of the Dora Awards. He organized four years of It’s Always Something, working with a team that raised over $500,000 annually for Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto.

Mitchell is active on committees that serve the arts community. He is an advisor to the Metcalf Foundation for its Creative Strategies Incubator program, a member of Sheridan College’s Performing Arts Committee, a member of the Dora Eligibility Committee, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Canadian Musical Theatre Writers Collective.

Mitchell has held positions in the arts management departments at University of Toronto and Ryerson University. He is the recipient of a Harold Award and the 2017 The Leonard McHardy and John Harvey Award for Outstanding Leadership in Administration.

03 Jul 2023Noah Tremblay: The Art Of Drag01:02:54

Are you interested in drag but not sure how to get started? Are you a fan of drag shows and want to explore the creative world around it?

In this week’s episode,  Actor/Drag Queen, Noah Tremblay, takes us behind the scenes of her journey to becoming Just Peachy.  She stresses the importance of seeing local drag shows and performers in allowing us to immerse ourselves in their culture and learn how personal drag is to everybody. She also recommends trying to perform in an open mic night and seeking assistance from  drag queens since they will be willing help you in every way possible.

Everybody should try drag at least once to discover that sense of play within themselves and let their inner child have fun.

In this episode:

  • Drag was always within Noah, it’s a personification of what her younger self wanted to do.
  • Being kind, professional and passionate are the most important things when you want to be a drag queen.
  • It’s important to treat drag performers with respect and reverence that they deserve because they put a lot of time and effort for their performance.
  •  How Noah’s father influenced him to always be in tune with the world around her and how it impacts various aspects of him life.

A little about Noah:

Originally from Pickering, Noah grew up wanting to perform for others, be it family, classmates, or even their own reflection. Despite being a flamboyant, feminine, closeted kid, he never shied away from being in the spotlight.

Having decided to pursue a career in the world of stage performance, Noah went on to train in singing, acting, and dancing. He then went on to perform with local theatre companies in shows like Legally Blonde and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. During previews for the Canadian regional premiere of Kinky Boots, his first equity contract, in 2020, the worldwide Covid shutdown pushed Noah to come up with a new avenue for channeling their love of performing. Thus, a new drag queen, Just Peachy, was born out of a need for growth, a love for the art form, and a longing to be back in the spotlight.

Now a working queen in Toronto, Just Peachy combines all of her professional training with her ability to serve face, hair flips, and all around cheekiness. She draws inspiration from pop icons such as Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, and Beyoncé, as well as Broadway divas like Kristin Chenoweth, Shoshana Bean, and Liza Minelli. Just Peachy is essence of flamboyance, ferocity and fruitiness

Just Peachy has done a few competitions during her time in Toronto. Namely, coming in second in the ABSOLUT Empire’s Ball season 3, as well as placing in the top 10 at the Miss El Convento Rico 2022 pageant. Her star has risen quickly and it continues to climb, thanks to the passion and effort put in by a queer kid from Pickering named Noah.

12 Dec 2022Lucy Russell: How To Embrace The Highs And Lows Of Being An Artist01:11:46

Was there a role that you really wanted but didn't get? How did you feel about that experience?

It's ok to have a good cry about it! Actor/Coach/Creative Lucy Russell enlightens us in this week's episode that when we lose a role that we really want, it's the same as losing a person; our hearts do not know the difference. Let's be kinder to ourselves and allow these feelings to come up in a wave and get them out of our body.  You are not alone in going through these seasons of rejection; what's meant for you will come to you.

In this episode:

  • Lucy's journey in being her own compassionate critic when watching her performance.
  • The biggest and most beautiful thing about films is that any story can touch people in really unexpected ways.
  • How the uncertainty brought by the pandemic lead us to crave for stories with predictable endings.
  • Lucy's plan of developing the incredible stories created by actors who didn't think they could write.

A little about Lucy:

Lucy Russell started acting in her late twenties, having tried too many other jobs to count and having got a degree in Italian and Business at UCL in London. Her first feature was also Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas's first film, Following. After a couple of years of drama school, she played the title role in Eric Rohmer's French language film The Lady and the Duke, (which had the most insanely beautiful hand-sewn costumes designed by Pierre-Jean Larroque).

She played Missy LeHand in CineNord's Atlantic Crossing, which won the 2021 International Emmy for TV Movie/Miniseries and Steph in Toni Erdmann, the German nominee for Best International Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, named best film of 2016 by Sight and Sound magazine, by Film Comment and by Cahiers du Cinema.

She's worked across genres with incredible directors in French and English: she's been head of the CIA and MI5; a trophy wife; a serial killer; a UN delegate; a toxic mother; leader of a galactic empire; a cult member; generally been like a pig in sh*t exploring as many facets of human expression as she can get her dirty paws on.

She's also a real person outside acting and has a life there, too, which, frankly, is not to be sniffed at.

09 Sep 2019Ryan Stiles: Love What Your Do, Work For Your Success, And Get A Dog!01:23:20

I am elated to be bringing you this conversation with Actor/Improviser Ryan Stiles! Like so many people I was addicted to Whose Line is it Anyway?  I was a fan from the very first time, I happened upon it when the Comedy Network aired the UK version of the show with host, Clive Anderson. I was always in awe of Ryan and Colin in particular and how it seemed like they were completely in sync with one another’s energy. They were definitely an early influence on how I learned about connection through acting and learning to trust your scene partner to have your back. I also used to wonder if they were as genuine and friendly as they seemed, and even though I have spent just a little bit of time with them both I am so glad to say that they were both very kind and warm to me.

In the episode, Ryan says that he doesn’t like people to know a lot about him and he likes his alone time, however, I think he opens up and imparts some wise words that can help many artists as they find their groove and make their way, no matter what stage of the journey they are on.

Grab a cup of coffee settle in and enjoy!

*Warning: If you do not like dogs this episode may not be for you… #sorrynotsorry

In this episode:

  • Why it is important to work for your success
  • What the biggest difference was between working on the US production of Whose Line Is It Anyway versus the UK production
  • Why he prefers improv over stand-up comedy
  • What he gets from improv that he can’t get anywhere else
  • What has been the most challenging thing that he has come up against in his artist’s journey
  • Why learning about the previous generation of artists can help deepen your work
  • Why ABBA is underrated!

A little about Ryan :

Ryan Stiles puts his hilarious improvisational skills to the test each week on the critically-acclaimed CW comedy series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Colin Mochrie and Wayne Brady co-star on the series, which is hosted by Aisha Tyler.

Stiles has starred in all three incarnations of “Whose Line.” First in the British version from 1989 to 1998; second in the American version hosted by Drew Carey from 1998 to 2006; as well as in the current version. He executive produced both American versions.

Stiles began his comedy career as a teenager, performing stand-up routines at small comedy clubs near his home in Vancouver, British Columbia. At age 17, he dropped out of high school to pursue stand-up comedy full-time.

He began honing his celebrated improv skills in 1986 with Canada’s highly- acclaimed Second City comedy ensemble. In 1990, he began a successful, four- year run with the Second City troupe in Los Angeles.

In addition to his “Whose Line” series, Stiles also portrayed Lewis, the luckless janitor, on the hit sit-com “The Drew Carey Show” and recurred for several seasons as Dr. Herb Melnick on the popular series “Two and a Half Men.” His film work includes the spoof features “Hot Shots” and “Hot Shots, Part Deux” and the Academy Award-nominated short film “Rainbow War.” And he recently produced a feature-length documentary called “Out of Nothing,” about four men competing to break the motorcycle land-speed record on the salt flats of Bonneville.

And you can likely catch Stiles in your home town with his ongoing national improv tour “Whose Live Anyway?” starring Stiles and fellow “Whose Line” veterans Greg Proops and Jeff Davis, along with Joel Murray (“Mad Men”).

According to Stiles, when he’s not at work, he spends his time thinking about work.

03 Feb 2020Ugh! I Hate Promoting Myself00:10:49

Do you hate promoting yourself and you work as an artist? I get it. I used to have all sorts of “head junk” around self-promotion. I used to have all of the thoughts “I don't want to bother anyone”, “no one is going to come anyway”, These thoughts I used to your think. It was really just to keep me playing small so I didn't have to level up. Then I actually worked in sales and got to see how it actually works and it totally changed everything!

13 Jul 2020You. Are. Canceled. 00:06:24

I am not certain of many things these days but there is one thing that has become very clear to me. That the pervasive cancel culture that has become prevalent in our culture is a threat to art. If we are not careful it will prevent us  ( society) as a whole from exploring meaningful ideas and impede the making of art. I believe canceling people is dangerous.

In today's episode, I am exploring the ramifications of cancel culture and the effects it has on the creative process, artist, and our art!

31 May 2021Paul Soles : “Talk About Good Luck?! You Betcha!”01:11:47

Today, in honour of the late Paul Soles, I re-release this conversation I had with him 3 years ago just on the heels of him winning best actor for his role in My 90-Year-Old Roommate. Paul is a Canadian Treasure and I feel so lucky to have sat a spoken with him for as long as I did collecting gems of wisdom.  A true class act.

Sitting down with Actor/ T.V. Personality/ Voice- Over Artist, Paul Soles, was a real treat for me. Paul was full of such life and good humour that it made for an easy discussion about the ups and downs and ins and outs of perusing a career as a performance artist. Aside from having an incredibly diverse and robust career, Paul witnessed the progression and development of both theatre and television from the beginning in Canada which allowed him to have a far broader scope and understanding of how the entertainment industry works and to have fascinating insights and stories on being a Canadian born artist that worked at home and internationally.

One of the things that struck me about Paul was the immense of gratitude he has for the work he does. Paul is 86 and still working. Just a few weeks ago Paul won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor in a Digital Program or Series for his work in the hit CBC Comedy My 90- Year-Old Roommate. Paul seems to speak with the same level of enthusiasm as someone who is starting out on their journey as an artist and that truly left a mark on me. Many times through the interview he proclaimed how lucky he has been to have been given the opportunities to work and how blessed he has been to work with the calibre of actors over the course of his career. In his words, “more luck than good management”. I am sure talent had a little something to do with it.

In this episode, we discuss how he got his start as a voice-over artist and actor, what is one tip he has received throughout his career that has stuck with him and proved to be useful, what his most memorable moment has been of his career and what he believes draw performers to want to perform in the first place and so much more!

A little about Paul :

Soles is widely known as the voice of Hermey the misfit elf in Rankin/Bass' Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from 1964. He also voiced Marvel superhero Spider-Man in the original animated television series also from the 1960s, and he played "The Lawbreaker" on the CBC panel quiz show This Is the Law in the 1970s, and played Costas Stavros on the Canadian soap opera Riverdale. In 2001, Soles took over the role of Shylock the Jew in the Stratford Festival of Canada production of The Merchant of Venice after Al Waxman, who was originally scheduled to play the part, died.[3] Soles played Stanley the pizza shop owner in The Incredible Hulk (2008), and his other film appearances have included roles in Ticket to Heaven (1981), Just the Way You Are (1984) and The Gunrunner (1989) opposite Kevin Costner. He also played Danny, the Montreal Customs House janitor in the 2001 crime thriller The Score.

Soles won a 2006 Gemini Award for his role in the television series Terminal City,[4] and a 2017 Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Digital Production for My 90-Year-Old Roommate.[5]

21 Oct 2019Elec Simon: Turn Your Challenges Into Your Artisitc Purpose01:00:29

Percussionist/Motivational Speaker/Emcee Elec Simon is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue! Prepared to be blown away with Elec’s love of life and his passion for serving others as with his art! If you are challenged by finding your place as an artist and where you can make a difference! Buckle up! Elec is bringing the inspiration today!

In This Episode:

  • What are the daily practices that keep him grounded
  • What advice he gives to artists who say they have nowhere to perform
  • How even when you think it’s over to Never Give Up!
  • How to learn from your challenges and turn them into the purpose that drives you
  • Where he got the idea to start anti-bullying drum performances in schools

A little about Elec:

Bio:

In 2002, Elec took his love for music to New York City. There, on the streets and subway platforms, he began to find the rhythm that would define his life. He would busk alongside many of the great street performers of our generation such as Larry Wright and William B. Johnson. Those moments created a pathway to his future– a role in the hit off-Broadway show STOMP.

Elec spent over a decade with STOMP. Touring across the country, experiencing life as a performer in one of the world’s best-received shows. But even that experience wasn’t enough to fuel his fire for music.

After his time with STOMP, Elec decided to return to his home in Canton, Ohio where he felt the need to give back to his community. Dear to his heart was the subject of anti- bullying. As a child, Elec had lost his best friend to bullying. He realized he could use his music as a platform to create change. He began performing in schools where his mix of “street smarts” and stage experience allowed him to connect with the children, teachers and staff in front of him.

He doesn’t just stand there and lecture them – he puts the music directly into their hands. Every Elec Simon assembly includes a full band, a huge line of buckets for the kids to play along, and Elec’s positive, high-energy message about respect, love and believing in yourself.

If Elec looks familiar to you, that’s for good reason. Not only has he been found on stage with STOMP and major news outlets who cover his message, he can also be seen performing with the Cleveland Cavalier’s Q-Stix. The Q-Stix were chosen to perform during the NBA 2016 and 2018 All-Star weekends.

In 2017, Elec went on to win the BMe Genius award with one of the most prestigious organizations called, “BMe.” BMe is a nationally recognized award-winning network of community-builders known for defining people by their positive contributions to society. 06 Mar 2023You. Are. Cancelled.00:06:21

I released this episode over a year ago. After watching Chris Rock's comedy special made me want to re release this epsisode. I went back and listened to it and I still feel the same way.

In today’s episode, I am exploring the ramifications of cancel culture and the effects it has on the creative process, artist, and our art!

Spicy episode! enjoy!

22 May 2023Griffin Hewitt: How To Create With Freedom00:54:33

What are your hesitations or thoughts that hinder you from sharing your ideas as an artist? Are you struggling with how much you should share or who to share it to?

You are not alone. In this week's episode, Actor/Playwright/Director, Griffin Hewitt will share his current challenges on discerning which content to sit with or put out. He reminds us that we don't have to figure it out on our own and we don't always need to be the voice in the project for our ideas to live. We can leverage the skills and energy from other artists to help put our ideas into fruition. You  don't need to be everything to create art.

In this episode:

  • Griffin wants to honour people who are choosing to leave their homes to attend an interactive experiences that give them a really fun world to escape in for a little bit.
  • The purpose of an artist is to allow one's imagination to physically and tangibly change the world around them, instead of allowing the world around them to change their imagination.

  • We always get into the mode that something is settled or real and we  need people who are able to imagine something new, speak up and can slowly work that idea through culture and institutions.
  • An artist is someone who is open to the fact that the world isn't set and can imagine something and make it happen.

BIO:

Griffin Hewitt is a theatre creator originally from Regina, Saskatchewan, now based in Toronto. After graduating Sheridan College’s music theatre performance program, he went on to originate roles in new Canadian musicals, sing Sondheim in abandon buildings and northern forests, and dress up like a goat to sing Greek poems to pop tracks. As a writer and director Griffin’s work focuses on the intersections between mythic storytelling, popular culture and new media, and queer, working class stories. He is deeply interested in building a deeper connection to the shared space between audience and performer, creating theatrical experiences that connect, challenge, and engage everyone in the act of theatre.

Do you consider yourself a writer? I mean… we can all write. Right? Right! I think… do I have even anything to say? What if what i write sucks?

Does this sounds like you?  I can certainly relate!

This is why I was so incredibly excited to sit down and speak with Poet/Theatre Performer/Writing Coach, David Silverberg, to gain some knowledge and insight into not only his wirting process but how those who are intersted in getting started on their writing journey can do so with as little negaitivity and open mind as possible!

13 Sep 2021Design And Live Your Most Creative Life! No Permission Needed!00:16:18

Today, on Cue To Cue, we are talking about permission and the role it plays in our creative journey.

When we are younger, permission is a very necessary function to keep us safe, help us respect people's boundaries, and keeping us all "rowing in the same direction". Asking your teacher to go to the washroom. Asking your parents if you can go to your friend's house etc...

In adulthood, along my creative journey, turns out asking and waiting for permission doesn't look the same as it did when I was a child. It shows up in subtler ways. It shows up in rational hesitation, justification, fear of trying new things, to name a few. Looking/waiting for permission can completely derail the creative vision for my life and my confidence to pursue it.

29 Apr 2024Colin Mochrie On Creativity, Curiosity and Hypnosis! Oh My!00:49:00

Do you know what happens to the brain when we improvise? How does it differ from our brain activity during hypnosis? In this episode, Actor/Improvisor, Colin Mochrie will share his eye-opening experience when he collaborated with Dr. Charles Limb to unravel how the brain works during improv. Colin found himself improvising inside an MRI scanner for 1.5 hours, and the findings revealed a decrease in activity in the brain region responsible for self-criticism, coupled with an increase in creativity.

Colin also shared that this is also the same thing that happens during hypnosis, part of the brain stops producing self-doubt and worry.  Empower your mind to silence self-doubt, let your brain ignite the fire of possibility and propel you towards your greatest achievements.

In this episode:

  • Who we are as people is amplified during hypnosis.
  • Colin learned from his debut on “Whose Line Is It Anyway” that he preferred taking action over doing nothing whatever the outcome may be.
  • An artist is someone who is never content with what he/she is doing; you have to be curious about the world and other people.

A little about Colin:

02 Mar 2020Have Your Superpowers Become Your Kryptonite?00:10:17

I believe we all have superpowers. Not like superheroes where we can shoot lasers out of our eyes. Well, at least I don't.

But we all have unique attributes that we have honed, sometimes subconsciously, through our experiences here on earth. But if we are not careful we the very thing that makes us powerful used to the extreme can also be the very thing that takes us down.

I am learning this lesson in a BIG way and this week I am sharing how I I got taken down by the very thing I pride myself on and how I am learning to harness this power and learning to use it as something I call upon when I need it and not to use it as my default setting.

20 Sep 2021Theatre Making Movement: Sarah O’Brecht, Ray Hogg, And Stephanie Graham01:06:29

Do you want to explore the creative process behind musicals?

Or are you an enthusiast and scared of trying it out yourself?

Learning is within your reach!

You are invited to attend the Theatre Making Movement to explore how movement can become a powerful storytelling tool.

You’ll have the opportunity to expand your creativity and professional development. In this week-long symposium, you will get to work, collaborate, and learn from leading choreographers and composers from around the world!

  • The journey that the creative team behind the Theatre
  • Making Movement encountered and overcame.
  • The importance for creators to write what’s in their heart instead of lowering their ceiling of imagination and creativity.
  • Exploring the importance of movement as a language of humanity and how that needs to be incorporated in creating musicals at conception.

A little about the Theatre Making Movement:

Theatre Making Movement is the brainchild of Director and Dora Award winning Choreographer Stephanie Graham (Fun Home, Grey Gardens, Wild Party- The Musical Stage Company) and performer, writer, and filmmaker Sarah O’Brecht (Charlottetown Festival, Neptune Theatre, Stage West Calgary). The idea was born when the two were discussing the creation of new Canadian musicals over a lunch break while working at the Globe Theatre in Regina, Saskatchewan. They observed that Canadian musicals are not being developed with dance as a part of the conversation. Canada has some of the best choreographers, movement practitioners, and dancers in the industry, yet most of our new musicals do not use this aspect as a storytelling device.

Spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended. The Conversations and Watch Me Work are presented virtually and are free of charge. The Classes are $22 and in held in person at Metro Movement, 833 Broadview Ave, Toronto, ON. To register visit: www.theatremakingmovement.com

11 May 2020Rob Preuss: Allow Your Curiosity To Fuel Your Passion01:02:40

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Musician/Composer Rob Preuss. Rob has had an incredibly diverse career and believes that part of the reason is due to his sense of curiosity and absolute love for all genres of music. Whether he was talking about his time spent as a keyboard player in the band ‘Spoons’ or Honeymoon Suite or teaching the vocal track to a new member of the cast of Mamma Mia, he seemed to always find something that about the experience that satisfied his passion and also made him want to dig deeper into his love of music.

In this episode:

  • what has enabled him to change genres and take on different roles in his music career
  • Why it is important to look at every creative endeavor as a novice
  • What he does when he is feeling uninspired or stuck
  • Why listening is the most important skill he continues to embrace as an artist,
  • How to follow your curiosity and not fear failure

A little about Rob:

Rob is a musician/composer.  He’s worked professionally in the recorded/live music business since he was 15 years old and has written, recorded, produced, conducted, rehearsed, played, bought, listened, loved, and learned music all of his life. Rob has worked alongside performers, producers, managers, accountants, agents, record company staff for decades.

He started playing classical piano at age 5 and joined his first rock band at age 10, and had some top 10 records in Canada with his band ‘Spoons' when he was 16-19 years old. They recorded their first album when he was 15, with Daniel Lanois, at his studio in Hamilton Ontario. With the band he recorded with other producers such as Nile Rodgers, toured and did shows with The Police, Culture Club, Simple Minds  to name a few. ‘Spoons’ were on Quality/A&M Records in Canada, and Jordan Harris signed us to A&M US.

Rob has also played in a Warner Bros. band called ‘Honeymoon Suite’ who was produced by Ted Templeman and recorded the title song for the first ‘Lethal Weapon' film in '87. Honeymoon Suite went on to Tour the world and did shows with Journey, Status Quo, Starship.

Rob has done music for corporate jingles, television/online spots, and many recording sessions for a variety of musical situations. In 1989 he also began working in Musical Theatre, in Toronto, playing many different shows, including Tommy, Miss Saigon, Beauty & the Beast, and Phantom of the Opera.

In 2000 Rob had the opportunity to work on Mamma Mia!, in Toronto, as Associate Musical Director, working with Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA, along with the whole British creative team, to help create the international production of the show. It's been successful, to say the least! He made his way to NYC in 2001 with the show and was Associate Music Director on Broadway until September 2015.

From 2011-13 he was Associate Music Supervisor for ONCE the Musical, off- and on Broadway, and we recorded the Grammy-winning cast album, produced by Steve Epstein. He studied composition in Germany with the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, in 2007, a few months before he passed away. “I'm always discovering great new music, in every genre, and I'm probably the most open-minded person I know when it comes to music!”

They are born out of the uninhibited expression and allowing of one's bassist and unfiltered emotions in reactions to the current circumstances in the moment.

Today's episode explores the different areas of shame and fear and how it shows up in our work and how the inability to teIl truth and shed shame in your life will keep you from honing your craft and keep your work static.

20 Nov 2023Divorce, Starting Again, And Freezing My Eggs! Oh My!00:15:26

It’s been a second! But we are back! 🎙️🙌

There have been some major changes in my life over the past few months in my life. What an adventure life can be… am I right??? #ohboy

In the last 3 months :
•My relationship/marriage of 17 years came to an end
•I have moved into my own place and am living alone for the very first time in my life!
•Decided to start my fertility journey to see if its possible to freeze my eggs at age 39

Let’s zoom in on that last one🧐

Did you know you can actually find out your fertility levels? Like how many eggs are in your Easter basket ?🧺 and if you ovulated properly and how old you are in fertility years?

Did you know it is very affordable to do so? 🫨

I know this can be a sensitive topic… but I think it’s important to talk about

I wish I had know more about fertility options when I was younger. I was NOT educated about it! Not in health class, not by doctors, no one !😩🤬

It’s often the case that artists/performers’ put off some major life stuff to pursue their passion and craft. 💯

One of those life events for many is having children.
There are so many reasons there isn’t enough space here …

On today’s episode of Cue To Cue I am opening up about my decision to attempt to freeze my eggs

I am at the initial stage of my journey, monitoring my fertility health to see if egg freezing is viable option for me.  I am not even sure I want children but I know that I want options. 🤞🏻💯

As I have opened up to people about my situation and journey, It has become apparent that so many people are as unaware as I was!

This can’t be the case! Not on my watch!  My whole mission us to empower artists/creatives and so here I go! Learn from my experience. If even if this helps just one person it is is worth sharing

On today’s episode l, I am going to walk you through the entire process of monitoring your fertility cycle and take the mystery associated with the process, cost, and what options are available.

Please share this far and wide as I think it can empower others and potentially save a a lot of heartbreak!

30 Sep 2019Debra McGrath: Learning To Celebrate The Process, Cultivating New Ideas And Putting Your Work Online01:07:10

It was so lovely to have Debra McGrath on the show. Deb seems to me like someone who has gotten good at living in the moment. That is something I continue to work on every day. She has a kind of infectious energy that inspires you to go for more in life. When I was listening back to the interview, I actually had the thought, I am so glad I record these conversations. She provides such nuggets of wisdom with her wealth of experiences, I found myself listening to certain parts of the interview more than once to let the truth of her words ring. Kind of like listening to a great song that you can’t get enough of when you first hear it.

In this episode, we discuss what she believes people who are starting out should look for in an agent, how she keeps herself engaged in her creativity, how she looks at giving a “good audition” as the “win” and actually booking the job is “the cherry on top.” She also gave a great piece of advice regarding exercising your creativity, “Do it any way you can and every way you can.”

A little about Deb:

Deb McGrath has recently been seen on DeGrassi, Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and The Ron James Show. She played Mayor Ann Popowitz for six seasons on Little Mosque on the Prairie. 22 Mar 2021Colin Mochrie & Brad Sherwood: How To Create Something Spectacular Out Of Nothing00:56:42

As the trend of virtual performances continue, do you fear that your knowledge of technology limits your creativity? Are you worried about how you can transition from live shows to online acts? Don't be afraid to rise to the challenge and use it to your advantage.

Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue this week are Improvisors/Actors Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood who remind us that it's ok to get yourself into trouble and to enjoy being in survival mode. They would take us on a journey on how they transitioned from two guys with zero knowledge about virtual performances to creating the Stream of Consciousness.

They also remind us that when your creative brains are in crisis mode, that's when you open doors and find things that nobody is doing; except for Oprah. Use technology as your friend instead of a limitation.

Be willing to be bad to be good, good to be great, great to be excellent; you just need to have that willingness! Surprise yourself and be creative!

In this episode:

  •  How being in a survival mode opened doors to creativity in the virtual landscape.
  • The technical challenges they encountered in starting the Stream of Consciousness and the steps they took to overcome it.
  • How the pandemic allowed them to find their creative outlets.
  • How they learned to embrace the difference in the audience dynamics between a live and virtual performance.

A little about Colin and Brad:

Armed with nothing but their sharp wit, comedians Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood around proud to present an all-new LIVE improv show via Zoom, Stream of Consciousness, where you are in the driver’s seat.
This truly interactive experience is fueled by audience suggestions, leaving Colin and Brad to rely only on their wits and intuition.  Hilarious and bubbling with irreverent humor, the duo captivate with their whip-smart senses and off-the-cuff comedic brilliance you won’t find anywhere else.

Known by TV audiences for their work on Whose Line is it Anyway? Colin & Brad improvise new material every night from audience suggestions and participation. “Interactive” in every sense of the word, Colin & Brad will take the audience on a comedic high-wire act…just like a live version of Whose Line!

Their amusing, PG-rated family show includes variations on many of the games showcased on Whose Line Is It Anyway?, including “Sound FX” and “One Word Expert.” As Mochrie and Sherwood take caution to point out at the beginning of each show, the scenes that make up the act are entirely unscripted.  Throughout the evening, the show becomes truly interactive as audience members are called to participate in the fun.

Mochrie and Sherwood both rose to prominence on the improv TV series as frequent players in its original incarnation on Britain's Channel 4 and then as star performers on the American version of the TV show from 1998-2006.

Before making comedy history with Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Mochrie starred in a variety of commercials, TV shows and movies. He was the recipient of the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Improviser in 2000 and the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Male Performance on the Canadian version of Whose Line Is It Anyway? the following year.

Sherwood has also appeared on various TV sitcoms, including VH1’s I Love the 70s, 80s and 90s and has headlined in Las Vegas with Drew Carey as a member of the comedy show, “Improv All-Stars.”

Now, Get ready for a night of non-stop laughter for all ages.

14 Feb 2022Pamela Demetriou And Lauren McDonald: How To Foster Relationships That Unlock Your Potential01:40:38

Happy Valentine's Day!!!!!!

Let's talk about love, connection, vulnerability, and relationships! On Valentine's Day, I couldn't think of two better people, my best friends, Pamela Demetriou and Lauren McDonald, to celebrate Valentine's day and do a deep dive with on these topics!

Today, with my besties we are sharing with you the inner workings of our almost twenty year relationship.  We are opening up about how we have grown together in our friendship and the evolution as us as individual and how we have cultivated a place within our friendship for vulnerability, authenticity and accountability. It has not come without hard conversations but we have been willing to put the friendship first and commit to growing through it in an attempt to understand one another and raise each other up.

I believe friendships can be one of the most powerful or destructive forces on us as we navigate the world. Who you surround yourself with dramatically impacts the quality of your life, directly and indirectly. Our friendships influence our goals, achievements. belief in ourselves, our outlook, what you pay attention to, nutritional habits.... everything.  If we learn to harness the power of friendship and be intentional about who we let into our inner circle, it can really act as a catalyst to fully embody our authentic selves and actualize our greatest desires. With the a strong inner circle we can create the environment around us that gives us a fertile ground for growth and creativity.

Do you feel like you can show up with one hundred percent authenticity in your relationships? Do you create a space for others to do the same?

10 Jan 2022Vulnerability, And Self Sabotage, And Winning! Oh My!00:20:27

Have you ever been in a place in your life where you wanted to achieve the next level of your dream bu there is something holding you back? You know it’s fear. That part is obvious. But fear of what what exactly?

This has been me for the better part of a year. I have felt like a dog in yard with an electric fence. So excited to run past my comfort zone and push my boundaries but every time I run to the edge of my yard I am zapped by an invisible fear that leaves me feeling paralyzed, overwhelmed, and ultimately make me want to stay safe in my yard, close to what I know. It’s been driving me crazy! I have gone around and around in my head everyday, asking myself, “What are you so afraid of?” I have come up with some idea but nothing that seemed to hit the mark.

Then, about 10 weeks ago I entered a fitness transformation challenge , and I won. Amazing! Right? Not what I felt. At all. I found myself unintentionally on the other side of that fence! I felt anything but excitement, joy, and a sense of accomplishment. BAM! Smack! Right in the face! The fear, I had been asking myself about. I was terrified to be seen winning! What?! Huh?!

Come along with me on today’s episode of Cue To Cue as I sort through this experience and how it affects my life as and artist and take a look where your own limited beliefs have been keeping you from living and actualizing your dreams.

Today, I am sharing my experience about moving throughmy own resistance and some tools i have discovered that I have discovered that are helping me heals, transform and evolve!

05 Oct 2020Joe Towne On The Performer's Mindset01:26:02
Have you ever feel that your performance was compromised because you got too nervous?

Don't worry, you're not alone. Most of us seek to avoid nervousness.

Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue today is  Actor/Coach/Founder Of The Performers Mindset Joe Towne who reminds us that even though we think that we have to be nerve-free to be at our best, that is not true. We need to be stressed enough that we have the opportunity to be at our edge of growth, but not too far to be overwhelmed or too little to be bored.

What do you struggle most during auditions?

Do you look for someone else to tell you how your performance went?

Joe explains that is a misunderstanding of what your job is and that is an all to common reflex among performers. It's a trap, that somebody knows better than you do which can lead to anticipatory stress, comparison, and a lack of confidence.

Focus on yourself and aim for excellence and do better than you've ever done before.

Learn, grow, and expand! Enjoy today's episode!

19 Sep 2022You Do Not Lack Discipline. You May Lack A Dream00:08:14

So, here is the thing. If you have a dream. A goal. A vision. A desire bigger than yourself (However you relate to that feeling inside you that drives you to step out of your comfort zone and into the unknown). You need discipline. There is no way around it.

Being inconsistent with anything will not allow that idea to get enough momentum to fly past your reach and make the impact you want it to.

But a lot of people struggle with discipline. You are not alone. I recently have found myself struggling to be consistent with my goals and dreams.  I couldn't figure out what was going on with me. Discipline is something that I have a positive association with and it was eluding me as to why I didn't have my same get up an go attitude. It was just feeling like my dreams weighed a thousand pounds and I was pushing them uphill and it was losing the battle.

Until I found myself  at a conference recently, and one of the speakers started talking about discipline and what stops people from exercising discipline in their life. It hit me smack in the face! That is what is going on with me!

That is what today's episode is all about!  Why you may lack the discipline you long for and how its closer to you than you think!

18 Jan 2021Setting Goals In Times Of Uncertainty00:12:28

The entertainment industry is one of the industries to be hit the hardest due to its collaborative nature; both in its creation and consumption.

This has left us in an uncertain as performers and artists. I have loved watching people innovate and change as we need to. It has been very inspiring but what happens to all of our personal goals as artists?

These last ten months has given me great pause in my life in many ways. It feels like I can acutely remember every moment and also all of it feeling like a blur at the same time. One thing I am certain of it has forced me inward. To live in the truth of my desires.

How do go after and achieve what I want in such uncertain times?

Over the last four months, I have been looking at different strategies in setting goals for the next while and there are four main things I have had to do to keep moving forward.

I am sharing them with you today :)

16 Dec 2019Charlotte Moore: Make Practicing Gratitude A Part Of Your Craft01:02:10
Has anyone ever affected your ability to believe in yourself as an artist? Singer/Actor Charlotte Moore is joining the conversation on Cue To Cue today to share how people influenced her confidence as a performer and the battles she faced to overcome self-doubt. She will help us reevaluate how we speak to ourselves and how it impacts our self-assurance.

In this episode:
  • Practicing gratitude when things don't turn up as planned
  • Impact of having positive conversations with ourselves
  • How Social Media affects your castability
  • Importance of saving in an artist's life

A little about Charlotte:

Daughter of Mavor Moore (Order of Canada, Governor General's Award), grand-daughter of Dora Mavor Moore (after whom Toronto's annual Theatre Awards are named), and one of Canada's most dynamic performers, Charlotte has been on the scene for over thirty-five years, mostly in her first love, musical theatre.

A recipient of the 1990 Dora Mavor Moore Award, (also known at Charlotte's house as a "Granny"), for her work in The Rocky Horror Show, Charlotte has had the great good fortune of working across the country with some pretty amazing people. Most recently she appeared as Marilla in Anne of Green Gables at The Charlottetown Festival.

She has twice appeared in Gypsy – once as "Louise", and once as "Rose" – eighteen years apart. She also managed the same trick with "Lucy" in You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. She played "Fantine" in Les Miserables across the country opposite Craig Shulman, and her favourite role to date is definitely as the sole woman in Stan Rogers - A Matter of Heart.

She spent a season in Robin Phillips' Grand Theatre Company , and three wonderful seasons at the Shaw Festival, culminating in the unforgettable Jackie Maxwell production of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along.

Charlotte has also done a lot more shows you'd recognize, but her real passion are the ones you probably won't – the Canadian shows that she has had the pleasure of being in. Shows by Leslie Arden, Jim Betts, Cathy Elliott, Joey Miller, and a whole host of other folks – a lot of whom are represented on her CD, "Friends of Mine". It features fifteen songs from shows past and present, only one of which had been recorded before. For more information, check out the Music page

05 Jun 2023Jamie McRoberts: Learning To Trust Your Journey And The Power Of Your Authenticity00:56:09

Do you get frustrated when the creative process isn’t going as planned? Do you get impatient when another artist is not going in the same direction as you hoped?

Patience isn’t easy, it requires constant effort and awareness to shift our mindset to remind ourselves that everyone has a different creative approach to art.  Musician/Actor/Singer Jamie McRoberts will remind us in this week’s episode that our minds are unique and work differently than everyone else’s. Everyone has their own magic or something that they’re good at, that’s why we can’t expect everyone to be in the same page every single time. Even if someone’s creative process is different, we all have the same goal which is to provide the best art we could give at that moment.

In this episode:

  • How the pandemic allowed Jamie to discover other passions outside of her artistic identity.
  • In order to stay grounded in the ups and downs of the creative lifestyle, Jamie tries to remember that she has so many things outside of the artistic world that matter.
  • Be who you are because you are interesting, you have a story to tell, stop being what people are telling you they think of you because they’re coming from the outside in and that’s not who people are.
  • Artists are storytellers and community leaders, we can tell stories anywhere and that is why we’ve survived for so long; people need to hear about other people going through similar things and having that connection.

A little about Jamie:

Jamie McRoberts is a singer, actor, dancer and musician from Oakville, Ontario. She is a classically trained pianist and vocalist having completed her Grade 8 Royal Conservatory for Voice and her Grade 10 Royal Conservatory for Piano. She is currently in Maggie, a new Canadian Musical created and co-written by Johnny Reid and Matt Murray.

She recently decided to dive back into her musician roots, and try her hand at song writing and has found the missing piece to her puzzle.

04 Jan 2021Siobhan Richardson: How To Succeed When You Have More Than One Passion01:34:56

How do you juggle multiple skillsets? How do you keep your skills sharp?

Joining the conversation on Cue To Cue this week is Performer/Fight Director/Intimacy Professional Siobhan Richardson who advises us to always reassess and rebalance on what makes us happy, not what other people think you should be.

Are you suffocating because you're selecting what you should show the world? Are you being the fullest version of yourself?

Release yourself from those shackles! You can be more than one thing at a time and still find fulfillment. You can enjoy and thrive in the diversity of your passions!

In this episode:

  • How breaking the shackles from the expectations of others allowed her to thrive in different forms of art and creativity
  • How ballet triggered her journey in movements arts to discovering stage combat and scenes of intimacy
  • The importance of points and pathways in embodying the required movements for scenes of violence
  • The impact of communication in knowing if someone is in trauma response versus being uncomfortable with scenes of intimacy

A little about Siobhan:

Siobhan Richardson is an award-winning actor/fighter/singer/dancer, Fight Director and Instructor, and Intimacy Director and is a pioneer voice in the Canadian Theatre Industry regarding Intimacy in Performance.

She is the preferred Fight Director and Instructor for a number of theatre companies, actors and directors, and a certified Fight Director with Fight Directors Canada. Stage combat teaching has, likewise, taken her across Canada, the USA and Europe. She has taught at international events such as the “Paddy Crean International Art of the Sword Workshop”, “The World Stage Combat Certification and Teacher’s Conference”, “Fight Directors Canada's National Workshops”, and the “Nordic Stage Fight Society's Summer Workshops”. In 2009, she received a “Chalmers Arts Fellowship Award” from the Ontario Arts Council, which allowed her to travel to Washington (DC), England and Sweden to study with some of the world's foremost Fight Directors: Brad Waller, Jonathan Howell, Tim Klotz and Peppe Östensson. She has completed three separate teaching tours of Europe which included Sweden, Norway, Estonia, England, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Germany and France. Siobhan's approach to teaching stage combat draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect fight technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary.

She had been teaching Intimacy extensively across Canada for the 2.5 years before Pandemic, travelling from Vancouver to Halifax to teach this work, in professional and amateur settings, and in educational institutions. She has also shared these techniques across the United States and in Europe. She is the first certified Intimacy Director in Canada (Intimacy Directors International), was the first ACTRA “Intimacy Coordinator” contract and the first Intimacy Coordinator contract at Ubisoft.

Her work as a fight director and/or intimacy director has appeared at The Shaw Festival, the National Arts Centre Indigenous Theatre and English Theatre, The Stratford Festival, Native Earth Performing Arts, Tarragon Theatre, Factory Theatre, Soulpepper, Canadian Musical Theatre Projects, The Grand Theatre (London, ON), Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company, Young Peoples’ Theatre, Starvox Entertainment, and Coal Mine Theatre, to name a few.

Meanwhile, she continues to perform as an actor/fighter/singer/dancer, most recently Faking It (#canadaperforms, NAC), The Penelopiad (Grand Theatre, London, ON) and A (musical) Midsummer Night’s Dream (Driftwood Theatre). When at home, she and her partner, Matt Richardson, teach stage combat (private lessons, workshops for actors, and workshops in schools). In the 2013-2014 school year, Burning Mountain was on the Ontario Arts Council’s “Artists in Education” roster, a program that subsidizes professional artists in high schools. In 2011, they won the Stage Combat Competition at CombatCon (Las Vegas), and later shot their scene “Trespasser” for film.

Always infusing Joyfulness and Curiosity into the work, Siobhan is dedicated to the growth and development of the art forms, the artists and the workplaces. She builds upon current practices, inspired by historical sources, drawing upon a variety of styles and approaches, infused with some science and developing ideas. Her approach to teaching movement arts draws parallels to the actor’s process in order to connect movement technique to the characters objectives, obstacles and tactics. From a physical perspective, her classes examine structure and biomechanics to prevent injury, while expanding physical vocabulary. She endeavors to foster and support a vibrant and healthy artistic community, and to help performers around the world connect more through their bodies to continually grow as storytellers and joyful co-workers.
