--DISCLAIMER -- While we may discuss specific web3 projects or cryptocurrencies on this podcast, please do not take any of this as investment advice, and please make sure to do your own research on potential investment opportunities,
In this episode, we are joined today by Tim Stirrup from Angel Protocol, an organization empowering charities to take advantage of decentralized financial products to improve their fundraising and their impact. We discuss the future of philanthropy, and how DeFi is flipping the traditional philanthropic sector on its head.
Tim is the Chief Marketing Officer of Angel Protocol. Before his time with Angel Protocol, he had a long career in education, educational technology and edtech investments, with a focus on marketing and communication. As many do, he drifted into crypto as an extension of his investing in the stock market, and was intrigued by some of the mathematics behind it, and in 2017 made his first purchase of Bitcoin. From here he began engaging with the Terra Ecosystem, and in the Spring of 2021, saw a tweet from Chauncy St John, now Founder of Angel Protocol, asking anyone interested in using the Terra blockchain for charity to send him a DM. Well, as you may have guessed, Tim did send him a DM, and here we are today.
About Angel Protocol
Angel Protocol has the mission of creating sustainable income streams for charities. Less than 60% of charities have enough saved in their reserves to cover more than one year of operating costs. Angel Protocol plays a critical role in solving this challenge.
Endowments are a powerful tool that charities use to grow their donations. However, traditional endowments can be expensive to set up, access, and maintain. Angel Protocol has developed a platform providing easy access to low-risk, high-yield endowments that provide charities financial freedom. Donors give once, and give forever.

Episode 30 - How DeFi can help the 2 billion people who are unbanked around the world
00:16:10
In this episode, we discuss a term that gets used a lot in the web3 space, and that of course is DeFi, or Decentralized Finance. Specifically, we explore, if, indeed, DeFi can be a solution to the crisis of the unbanked, and bring greater financial inclusion to everyone.
Being unbanked can put individuals and communities at a disadvantage, as it may prevent them from fully engaging with the economy, being able to take out a loan or purchase a house, or being unable to get insurance, among many other challenges.
Cryptocurrency, and more specifically, Decentralized Finance (or DeFi), has been put forward as a potential remedy to this challenge. DeFi, in short, is a catch-all term for decentralized, blockchain-based services that enable basic financial transactions, such as the earning of interest, borrowing of money, storing of cash, and purchasing of insurance. In this episode, I highlight three reasons, among many, that DeFi and crypto are well suited to help overcome the crisis of the Unbanked, and share a few examples of exciting DeFi projects.

Episode 39 - AntidoteDAO - Decentralized funding of cancer research and charitable initiatives
00:24:19
In this episode, we’re excited to welcome Niko Katsuyoshi, Founder of AntidoteDAO, a Decentralized Autonomous organization dedicated to funding cancer research and charitable initiatives. We discuss how they are looking to bring greater transparency to medical research & grantmaking, how they are raising funds via crypto and NFTs for cancer research, and the long term vision for the DAO.
About AntidoteDAO
AntidoteDAO (originally Cancer Coin) was created by Niko Katsuyoshi in late 2021 to take advantage of the developments in crypto/blockchain technology and aid developments in curing different cancers. Having lost countless family members to the terrible disease, he wanted to be able to do something to help for once. Originally launching Cancer Coin on the BSC Network, he quickly came to realize he needed to increase community trust. By moving to the ETH Network and also creating a DAO, the project would be able to become community-controlled and fund different cancer initiatives directly.

Episode 40 - Blockchain and a world without intermediaries - a social impact perspective
00:12:56
In this episode, we dive into one of the most profound and powerful social impact implications of blockchain and web3, the ability to remove intermediaries or "middlemen" from the equation.
One of the biggest benefits for humanity, that will be ushered in by blockchain, is the role it will play in helping cut out the middle man, or intermediary organizations, that have traditionally funnelled money away from the average individual and put it in the hands of the already wealthy.
Inherent in the web3 space is the value of decentralization, and by helping take power away from the centre, and redistributing it to the periphery, blockchain will usher in greater equity and inclusion for traditionally underserved populations.
To drive this point, there are three specific areas we discuss in this episode, of how blockchain can eliminate these intermediaries, resulting in greater equity and empowerment for the average person:
1. Financial Inclusion 2. NFTs 3. Disrupting the service sector

Episode 42 - The good vs. the bad – Evaluating web3 projects and avoiding scams
00:11:04
Unfortunately there are a lot of scams in the web3 space. The projects doing real good far outweigh these scams, of course, but this doesn’t take away from the importance of being able to recognize bad actors in the space. In this episode, we discuss what you should look for when evaluating potential partners and projects in web3, and some red flags that could indicate that a project is a scam.
The questions to ask yourself when evaluating a project?
Is there a solid whitepaper or guiding documentation for the project?
Who are the developers? Are they doxed?
Who is the project partnering with or supported by?
How long has the project been around?
What sort of social media activity is there around the project?
Is there a solid, well researched value proposition behind the project?
It’s important to note that there is no, 100%, catch-all formula when it comes to evaluating projects, and every project needs to be evaluated on it’s own merits. Please be careful when evaluating projects, and make sure to take an individualized approach to evaluating each project.

Episode 48 - DeFi, ReFi, and DeSci
00:12:28
In this episode, we highlight three movements within web3 that have experienced incredible growth in recent years: Decentralized Finance (DeFi), Regenerative Finance (ReFi), and Decentralized Science (DeSci).
Reflecting back on the start of 2022, it is clear that the broader movement of decentralization has gained incredible momentum as we’ve seen the launch of dozens, if not hundreds, of social impact DAOs and NFT projects, and the exponential growth of decentralized philanthropy. Decentralization is a core aspect of DeFi, ReFi, and DeSci as well – in that they seek to use decentralization, and the power of community, to address complex challenges that legacy systems simply haven’t been able to address.
In this episode we give a brief introduction to each of these movements, and some of the projects and organizations that are leading the way.

Episode 52 - Favrit & Kindred Hearts - NFTs to drive financial inclusion and social change
00:21:56
In this episode we welcome Johnny Utah, the Founder of Favrit, a web3 organization with a mission to financially empower under-resourced communities and causes with art, cryptocurrency, and NFTs. Favrit is driven by the collective desire to affect positive social change through financial inclusion and empowerment. In this episode, we discuss their inaugural NFT project, Kindred Hearts, and how NFTs and web3 can drive financial inclusion and social change, and build stronger communities.
Five Key Takeaways
It’s all about the team – any web3 project, including Favrit and Kindred Hearts, is driven by a team of talented individuals, which acts as the foundation. It’s important to build out this foundation as a first step.
There is a lot of virtue signaling in the web3 space. It is important to seek out projects where social impact is core to the mission, and not just an after thought.

Episode 53 - Crowd Funded Cures - DeSci and the decentralization of public good medicines
00:42:53
In Episode 53, we’re thrilled to be joined by Savva Kerdemelidis and Nicholas Fiorenza from Crowd Funded Cures, a web3 project with a mission to launch a DeSci crowdfunding platform to incentivise the discovery of new uses for off-patent drugs, plant medicines, nutraceuticals and other unmonopolisable therapies without reliance on patents by using IP-NFTs, Pay-for-Success (PFS) contracts, and the issue of Public Good Medical Prize NFTs. Sound complicated? Don’t worry, they do a great job of breaking it down in this episode as we discuss the role web3 can play in funding medical research and development, IPNFTs, and the amazing potential in the DeSci movement.
Five Key Takeaways
DeSci provides new opportunities to engage individuals and communities in scientific research and development, and to create a more collaborative and open-source space.
IPNFTs allow for the fractionalization of ownership in early-stage biopharma projects and research, providing greater access to liquidity for researchers.
Pay-for-success models help incentivize research into new uses for off-patent medicines without the traditional risks.
IP NFTs and pay-for-success models will allow for greater research into medicines and therapies that have traditionally been ignored due to a lack of profitability.
Blockchain alone won’t solve the issues plaguing scientific research and development, but it will make solving them a lot easier.

Three Key Takeaways
The web3 space should be inclusive for everyone, regardless of their professional background. Positive role models are needed in the space.
Relationships are key in building a successful web3 movement. There is a lot of “noise” in the space, and plenty of bad actors, so it’s important to invest in building an authentic and tight-knit community.
NFTs and web3 can be powerful tools for change if used properly. There is power in numbers, and web3 enables people to organize and form movements in new ways.

Three Key Takeaways
The web3 space can provide sustenance and community to Queer people – by providing a safe space for people to find a community of support, including through Pride events in the metaverse, and by supporting the livelihoods of Queer artists.
Being an ally means taking action, not just talking. Those in the web3 space need to make sure Queer people are included in their leadership, to create spaces to uplift Queer artists, and to financially support LGBTIQ artists and movements.
In web3 it’s all about community and collaboration. We have an amazing opportunity to learn from the mistakes of web2 and create the most inclusive web3 possible, and it all starts with collaboration. The Pride With A Purpose campaign is a great example of how collaboration can drive change.

AdLunam was founded by experienced blockchain entrepreneurs who have worked with over 200 firms in managerial and consulting roles, ranging from tokenomics to marketing and communications. AdLunam's Engage to Earn investment model democratizes crypto investing, and their Proof of Attention mechanism has been built in response to the challenges of the Web3 Attention Economy. In today’s episode, we discuss the need to democratize early stage crypto projects, how AdLunam is creating a more inclusive and accessible space for retail investors, AdLunam’s unique Engage to Earn Proof of Attention mechanism, and advice for those looking to break into the world of web3.
Our guest today, Nadja Bester, has over 16 years of marketing & communications expertise as an Agency Director, and a Digital Marketing Executive for a multi-billion-dollar pharma company. She has been a crypto journalist for publications such as Bitcoin.com and Investing.com, a blockchain industry speaker, advisor, and consultant, and a female founder in the crypto industry. Nadja has been profiled on a number of publications including Benzinga and Hackernoon.
3 Key Takeaways
Traditionally, early-stage investing has been reserved to high net-worth individuals. There is a need to create a system that is accessible to everyone, regardless of financial standing.
AdLunam rewards users on their platform for their engagement through their Engage to Earn Proof of Attention mechanism. Think the “Reddit of IDO launchpads” – where users who conduct research and engage around a project are rewarded with “points” which enable them to receive allocation.
We have an opportunity to learn from the inequities of the traditional financial system and build a more fair and inclusive system through crypto. However, it’s important to not fall into the same errors of the traditional system.

Episode 66 - DeSci Labs - Rebuilding the backend of science with web3
00:44:18
For Ep. 66, we continue our exciting journey into the world of Decentralized Science, or DeSci. We welcome Erik van Winkle and Jon Starr from DeSci Labs, a decentralized scientific ecosystem using web3 to empower scientists and rebuild the backend of science. We discuss some of the current pain points being faced by scientists, how science is in a crisis, and how DeSci Labs is looking to resolve this by using web3 to rebuild the backend of science.
Three Key Takeaways
Web3 shifts the balance of power in science away from scientific journals and large centralized bodies to scientists themselves, ensuring that they are fairly compensated for their work.

Episode 71 - RemittDAO - Crypto, the future of remittances, and inclusion for the unbanked
00:40:39
For Episode 71, we’re excited to welcome Craig Schuster, Founder of RemittDAO, a social impact DAO focused on building wealth in migrant & refugee families, worldwide. They do this through teaching web3 skills & enabling digital remittance payments; especially for those who are unbanked. In this episode we discuss how crypto can build a fairer remittance system for migrant workers and those who are unbanked, their plan to provide web3 and digital remittance education to migrant communities, how crypto and web3 can lead to financial inclusion for the unbanked, and much more.
The remittance system is broken, and those who are most vulnerable, such as refugees, migrant workers, and the unbanked, are paying the price with high fees and interest rates.
The tools exist to fix the remittance system with cryptocurrency. However, we can’t go by an “if we build it, they will come” approach. Coordinated education is needed to make sure those who need these tools most have the support and onboarding to make use of them.
A community-driven approach is needed to implement web3 solutions in vulnerable populations. These solutions must be locally-driven, with the local communities having ownership over the project.

In this episode we discuss how Decentralized Science, or DeSci, can build a world of science that is unrestricted, unbiased, and uncensorable, some of the most exciting developments in the world of DeSci, why scientists should be excited about this new movement, and much more.
Three Key Takeaways
Decentralized Science can create a parallel infrastructure to help address many of the key pain points scientists face including a lack of funding, institutional bias, and a lack of ownership by scientists.
DeSci helps even the playing field by helping break down gatekeepers while giving more power to scientists, ensuring they can conduct their research without fear of outside influence and censorship.
DeSci creates more opportunities for contact and collaboration between science and the “non-science world” by creating more opportunities for individuals and communities to be involved in the scientific process.

Episode 93 - Glo - Fighting extreme poverty with Web3 and stablecoins
00:44:17
In episode 93, we’re excited to welcome Garm Lucassen and Jasper Driessens from Glo, a stablecoin with a mission to generate basic income and lift people out of extreme poverty. We discuss why Web3-enabled basic income is such a powerful force for fighting poverty, the mechanics behind the Glo Dollar, how crypto can drive financial inclusion, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Stablecoin providers earn interest (~2.7%) by investing the fiat used to “purchase” the stablecoins in secure products such as treasury bonds. Glo will do the same, but instead of this interest generating profit for shareholders, it will go directly to basic income programs for those in extreme poverty.
Basic income is a powerful tool for fighting extreme poverty as it puts power in the hands of the individual receiving the basic income with no strings attached, allowing them to make decisions on how to improve their lives based on their own unique circumstances.
The majority of DAOs hold substantial funds in stablecoins, providing exciting opportunities for DAOs to play an important role in this movement and to help lift people out of extreme poverty.

Episode 94 - Gitcoin - “Empowering communities to fund, build, and protect what matters” with Quadratic Funding
00:47:35
In episode 94, we’re excited to welcome Connor O’Day from Gitcoin, a Decentralized Autonomous Organization that is “empowering communities to fund, build, and protect what matters.” We discuss what the heck Quadratic Funding is at its core, how Web3 can empower communities and revolutionize crowdfunding, the incredible impacts of the Gitcoin grants protocol, and much more.
Quadratic Funding is the mathematically optimal way to fund public goods – putting more power in the hands of the community, as opposed to those with more resources.
Traditional donation systems can be disempowering to smaller donors as they may feel that their donation doesn’t have a large impact. With Quadratic Funding’s matching mechanism, however, the impact of smaller donors is amplified.
The future use cases of Quadratic Funding go well beyond just grant funding and could extend to other community-driven funding activities such as participatory budgeting.

Episode 95 - TIMEPieces - NFTs, community-building, and social change art
00:40:03
In episode 95, we’re excited to welcome Jason Metz, Senior Web3 Strategist at TIME. Through their Web3 community initiative, TIMEPieces, they have released multiple NFT collections, and are using the power of Web3 to bring artists, collectors, and the community together. In this episode, we discuss how NFTs can help elevate history and culture, why Web3 as a powerful tool for uplifting activists and social change movements, how Web3 can help build community, and much more.
The spirit of Web3 is to move towards a more equitable system that aims to break down systemic societal structures that exist to pick winners and losers, and building a system that empowers everyone to rise to the top.
NFTs present new ways for individuals to preserve memories and experiences that matter to them, in ways that give them true ownership.
Whereas activists and changemakers have capitalized on Web2 platforms to grow their movements, Web3 empowers them with true ownership over their movements – giving them the tools and agency to engage others and create shared ownership in their cause.

Episode 96 - HerVoice NFT - Turning women’s voices into action with Web3 technology
00:40:23
In episode 96, we’re excited to welcome Melissa Jun Rowley, Founder of HerVoice NFT, an NFT project with a bold vision to “unleash the voices of 3.9 billion women.” We discuss how Web3 can help uplift and drive movements of change, the power of NFTs to raise funds and awareness for important causes, building inclusion and diversity in Web3, and much more.
Community is one of Web3’s biggest assets. We’ve seen time and time again how quickly the Web3 community has been able to mobilize around important causes such as support for humanitarian aid in Ukraine, and relief in Turkey and Syria.
Web3 and NFTs are an incredible tool for connecting people all over the world. HerVoice NFT, for example, is a collaboration of women from over 20 countries and is a truly multilingual and multicultural project enabled by Web3.
The “Crypto Bro” narrative is still dominate in Web3, and there is a need to “shift the language”. We can do this by meeting people where they are at when onboarding them to Web3 and focusing educational efforts on the benefits of Web3 to one’s life, as opposed to just the technology behind Web3.

Episode 97 - Canza Finance - Leveling the playing field for businesses in emerging economies with Web3 and DeFi
00:38:57
In episode 97, we’re excited to welcome Victor Teixeira, Lead Crypto Economist from Canza Finance, “an Open Finance Portal enabling access to unlimited financial services for emerging markets.” We discuss how Web3 and DeFi can bridge the gap to financial services for small businesses in emerging economies, some of the barriers to financial inclusion for the unbanked and financially underserved, why Africa is at the frontier of the Decentralized Finance movement, and much more.
While the focus in DeFi is often on the 1 billion unbanked people around the world, there is also a need to support those who are financially underserved, including small and medium-sized business in emerging economies who lack access to financial services like credit, hedging opportunities, investment opportunities, etc.
The continent of Africa has the world’s largest population of young, digital-native entrepreneurs, while also facing substantial challenges around financial inclusion. This presents an incredible opportunity for the growth of Web3 technology and DeFi in Africa.
Web3 and DeFi gives the individual opportunities to build new financial tools that simply wasn’t possible before by shifting power from centralized institutions to the community.

Episode 98 - JennyCo - Building the world’s first Healthcare Data Exchange powered by Web3
00:38:03
In episode 98, we’re excited to welcome Jenny Diggles and Dr. Michael Nova, Co-Founders of JennyCo, the world’s first Web3 healthcare data exchange. We discuss how blockchain can give patients ownership over their healthcare data, using crypto tokenomics to reward patients for their participation in the healthcare data economy, how Web3 can disrupt the massive healthcare sector, and much more.
A third of all data created worldwide is healthcare data. This data primarily benefits large institutions such as big pharma, insurance companies, etc., but it rarely benefits the patient themselves. Web3 can change this by giving patients ownership over their healthcare data.
Web3 can empower patients to engage in their own health care by using crypto tokenomics to incentivize participation in studies and healthy activities. Patients can then use the rewards they earned to purchase healthcare services and products.
Healthcare records are disjointed and lack interoperability. Blockchain can help by creating an immutable and secure source for the storage and sharing of medical data.

In episode 99, we’re excited to welcome Karen Shidlo, CMO of Fiat24, an award-winning, Swiss licensed fintech company dedicated to bringing crypto spending to the world. We discuss the exciting world of decentralized digital identity and Soulbound tokens, the recent challenges facing centralized exchanges, the importance of self-custody, financial inclusion, and much more.
Soulbound tokens are a type of unique decentralized digital identity that represent your traits, achievements, credentials, etc.
Self-custody effectively makes you your own bank. With this comes many benefits, but also a lot of risks and responsibilities. As a benefit, it means that you have true ownership over your money, and are not bound to any centralized financial institution or exchange.
In some regions of the world, there is greater access to internet and mobile services, than there is to banking services. In these regions, digital currencies are a great solution to help narrow the gap to financial inclusion.

Episode 101 - hypercerts - tracking and rewarding positive impact with blockchain
00:38:10
In episode 101, we’re excited to welcome Carl Cevone from hypercerts, a new protocol for funding and rewarding impact. We discuss how they’re using the power of blockchain to help build sustainable models for public goods financing, why blockchain is such a valuable tool for impact monitoring and evaluation, how Web3 will disrupt the impact ecosystem, and much more.
--Support Crypto Altruism's Gitcoin Grant Proposal--
By ensuring that the impact of a project is accurately recorded, it can help restore public trust and confidence in public good and impact funding, hopefully leading to a flywheel effect of more funding coming in, more projects being launched, and greater overall impact.
By accurately capturing and storing impact data in an open and permissionless way, it allows for the studying of past trends related to public goods funding, which can help ensure the funding is having its desired impact, and to learn from projects that didn’t have the desired outcome.
There has been a lot of negativity lately around crypto due to the negative actions of bad actors, which has impacted the reputation of Web3. To overcome this, we need to onboard new folks to the space who have a passion for social impact, and not lose focus on the potential of this technology to regenerate the world and be a force for good.

In episode 102, we’re excited to dive into a great case study of NFT philanthropy, and welcome three incredible guests to share their story. First, there is Katie Hultquist, Director of Leadership Giving at Outright International, an international charitable organization dedicated to advancing LGBTIQ rights all over the world. Second, there is Jeres, an incredibly talented generative artist. And finally, we’re excited to welcome Alfredo Asuzano, Core Team at fxhash, an open platform for creating and collecting generative art on the Tezos blockchain. In this episode we learn about their collaborative NFT project that raised funds and awareness for Outright International, how NFTs can be a powerful force for social impact, how Web3 can benefit social causes, and much more.
--Support Crypto Altruism's Gitcoin Grant Proposal--
NFT Philanthropy can enable win-win-win partnerships between artists, Nonprofits, and Web3 protocols, giving them the ability to raise funds and awareness, and connect with new audiences.
The real value in NFT philanthropy campaigns comes not from the funds raised, but the partnerships created, and the new supporters onboarded to the cause.
NFT Philanthropy allows Nonprofits to create personal connections with donors in ways that traditional donation methods cannot. It creates new opportunities for causes to create lifelong supporters and advocates.

Episode 103 - Metis & Nuvo - Decentralized digital identity and data ownership in a data-driven world
00:32:24
In episode 103, we’re excited to welcome Yuan Su, Founder and CTO of Metis, an Ethereum Smart Layer-2 dedicated to solving the trilemma of security, scalability, and decentralization, and Nuvo, a middleware platform that bridges the gap between Web2 and Web3 development. We discuss how Web3 can enable data privacy and ownership, the exciting potential of a decentralized digital identity, and how it can help the 1B unbanked around the world, and much more!
--Three Key Takeaways--
Most of our data, including our credentials, are entrusted to centralized third parties. This opens the user up to risks including data breaches which can lead to financial loss and identity theft.
“Not your key, not your coins” is a well known saying in Web3 which should apply to one’s credentials and identity as well. One’s identity should be viewed as an asset, in the same way as a cryptocurrency or NFT, for example, and needs to be safeguarded as such.
Over 1B people lack access to a proof of identity – which can be a huge barrier to social and financial inclusion. Decentralized digital identity can help by giving these individuals a verifiable identity that can be used to access essential financial services.

Episode 104 - Film 3.0 - How Web3 will revolutionize the film industry and empower independent creators
00:36:58
In episode 104, we’re excited to welcome Josephine Lilly Landertinger Forero, Director and Producer at Global Eyes Production, an independent film company providing author driven films and audiovisual content for the world. We discuss how Web3 can empower independent filmmakers, how NFTs can change the way audiences engage with films, how Web3 will disrupt the massive, and traditionally centralized film industry, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Through the promise of decentralization, Web3 can help independent filmmakers overcome traditional gatekeepers and middlemen that have made it difficult for them to make a living and maintain creative agency.
Web3 and NFTs will empower independent filmmakers by providing new avenues for financing films, distributing them, and providing audiences with new ways to engage in the filmmaking process as active participants.
When it comes to Web3 disrupting the film industry, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be a mix of Web3 elements such as NFTs and traditional elements of the film industry.

Episode 105 - Filecoin Green - Sustainable blockchain and verifiable decarbonization in a net-zero future
00:39:36
In episode 105, we’re excited to welcome Alan Ransil, Project Lead at Filecoin Green, which aims to measure the environmental impacts of Filecoin and verifiably drive them below zero, while building infrastructure that allows anyone to make transparent and substantive environmental claims. We discuss how Web3 can help organizations and governments achieve net-zero emissions targets, building sustainable blockchain protocols, how blockchain can restore trust in carbon markets, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Organizations love making claims about their renewable energy use and emissions but can rarely prove it. Web3 solutions like Filecoin green can help hold these organizations accountable by giving them the tools to verify these efforts.
To verify net-zero claims, you need coordinated access to data across numerous silos and organizational boundaries. Web2 simply isn’t built for this type of function, whereas Web3 can transform this disjointed patchwork of data into a coordinated and interoperable system by enabling organizations to share information across boundaries.
Carbon offsets have been plagued with a lack of trust and concerns over the legitimacy of many popular offset projects. Web3 can improve carbon markets through greater transparency, cutting out unnecessary middlemen, community governance over local projects, and verifiably showing that projects are having their stated impact.

Episode 106 - AthenaDAO - Levelling the playing field for women's health research with Web3
00:42:11
In episode 106, we’re excited to welcome Laura Minquini, Founder of AthenaDAO, a decentralized community of researchers, funders, and advocates working to advance women’s health research, education, and funding. We discuss how Web3 presents new funding opportunities for women’s health research, why DAOs are the ultimate tool for organizing the community, the role of IP-NFTs in scientific research, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Web3 has an incredible ability to challenge traditional norms through the lens of decentralization. Traditional science is very hierarchical, expensive, gatekept, and lacks transparency. The Decentralized Science movement is addressing this by shifting power away from traditional institutions and putting it into the hands of scientists and the community.
Women’s health research is drastically underfunded due to a decades long cycle of research biases, a lack of women in decision making roles, and gatekeepers that have prevented women’s health research from getting the funding it deserves.
DAOs are a powerful tool for funding scientific research, as they are truly driven by the community, and members don’t have to answer to centralized bodies that have inherent research biases or may be focused on profit over need.

Episode 107 - Empowering small businesses and the next generation of entrepreneurs with Web3
00:30:39
In episode 107, we’re excited to welcome Daniele Servadei, Co-Founder and CEO at Sellix, an e-commerce platform making it easy for the entrepreneurs of tomorrow to grow their businesses with cryptocurrency. At the age of 18, Daniele Founded Sellix, while balancing life as a student, and saw the incredible potential of Web3 from the beginning. We discuss how Web3 can help entrepreneurs and small businesses reach new audiences, the importance of simplifying user experience in Web3 to drive mass adoption, why crypto is the future of e-commerce, some advice for aspiring entrepreneurs, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
One of the biggest barriers to businesses engaging with Web3 (as well as nonprofits and other sectors) is user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). The Web3 ecosystem is still in its infancy, and as such, the UI/UX is still quite complicated for those that aren’t Web3-native, and to achieve widespread adoption, it’s important that we create a more simple and low-barrier user experience.
There are many gatekeepers and intermediaries that stand between entrepreneurs and their customers. Web3 can help cut out these intermediaries by giving entrepreneurs the tools to connect with a global customer base directly.
Decentralization is one of the pillars of Web3, but there will always be centralized actors that operate in the space. For centralized Web3 services (such as CEXs, centralized marketplaces, etc.), it’s important for guardrails to be in place to protect users from bad actors.

We discuss how Web3 tools can help engage global communities around important causes, using metaverse experiences to raise awareness and educate about marine conservation, why NFTs are a powerful force for social impact, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
NFT philanthropy is about more than raising funds, it’s also about raising awareness, educating the community, and creating new champions for your cause.
Metaverses, virtual reality, and augmented reality experiences can create new and cost-effective ways to educate individuals about causes such as marine conservation, by creating engaging ways for individuals to explore and learn about important issues.

Episode 109 - Angel Giving - Crypto philanthropy through the highs and lows of Web3
00:55:43
In episode 109, we’re excited to welcome Chauncey St. John, Founder of Angel Giving, a web3 platform with a mission to democratize access to growth funds so any nonprofit organization can achieve a more secure financial future. We discuss how Web3 can improve charitable endowments and other giving tools, navigating the highs and lows of Web3 as a nonprofit, advice for nonprofits who are hesitant to engage with Web3, building through challenging times in the Web3 ecosystem, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Traditional charitable fundraising methods, such as grant seeking and corporate sponsorships can be unreliable, leaving many nonprofits in a consistent state of precarity. Web3 offers innovative new fundraising tools to help nonprofits escape this cycle of precarity and build towards financial sustainability.
Large nonprofits have long had access to charitable endowments which are largely inaccessible to smaller nonprofits that don’t have large financial capital to put forward. Web3 can change this by providing this game changing tool to nonprofits of all sizes, regardless of the size of their balance sheet.
Web3 has faced a lot of adversity lately, including the collapse of prominent crypto exchanges and projects. While painful, this adversity may have been necessary to “clear the way for new growth” and allow the space to mature and come back stronger.

Episode 110 - Bonfire - Democratizing real estate access with blockchain technology
00:29:53
In episode 110, we’re excited to welcome Joshua Kagan, CEO & Co-Founder of Bonfire, a Web3 startup using the power of blockchain technology to enable every day people to have access to wealth generation. We discuss how blockchain can democratize access to the wealth-building power of real estate, how tokenization will revolutionize the way people of all income levels invest in physical assets, how Web3 can level the playing field for younger generations through the creation of a fairer economy, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
For most people, a house is the biggest asset they’ll ever own, and is a reliable path to building intergenerational wealth. However, real estate ownership has become a pipe dream for younger generations as prices, interest rates, and demand have all increased.
Tokenization makes it easier for the masses to gain access to real estate and other physical assets that were previously out of reach by lowering the cost of entry, providing liquidity in a way that hasn’t existed before, and lowering bureaucratic barriers that slow down real estate transactions.
There are billions of people around the world who lack access to physical assets like real estate to help build their wealth. Tokenization can level the economic playing field by facilitating access to these tools to help individuals escape cycles of subsistence living.

Episode 111 - Artizen Fund - Empowering human creativity with community-centric Web3 fundraising
00:53:03
In episode 111, we’re excited to welcome René Pinnell, Co-Founder of Artizen Fund, a movement using Web3 tools to unlock human creativity by reinventing how we fund art, science, technology, and design. We discuss the challenges with getting funding for human creativity and how Web3 can address this, Artizen’s innovative artifact fundraising process, how blockchain can help eliminate bureaucracy and put power in the hands of communities, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Human creativity, and especially the arts, is chronically underfunded despite being core to human civilization, with creatives often having to spend substantially more time seeking out funding than engaging in creative work.
Web3 enables innovative ways that didn’t exist before to organize the community and raise funds. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) and other blockchain tools are democratizing crowdfunding by ensuring projects with the most widespread public support receive the funding they deserve while giving individuals new ways to support causes they care about.
Crypto allows organizations and causes to cut out intermediaries such as payment processors who not only take a cut of all transactions, but who also have the ability to deplatform and shut down movements.

Episode 112 - Dock - Redefining trust with decentralized identity, soulbound tokens, and zero-knowledge proofs
00:33:40
In episode 112, we’re excited to welcome Nick Lambert, CEO of Dock, a decentralized identity company that enables organizations to issue, manage, and verify fraud-proof credentials efficiently and securely via blockchain. We discuss how decentralized identity can protect us in our digital world, the innovations of soul-bound tokens and Zero-Knowledge Proofs, how decentralized identity will revolutionize industry in the coming years, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
At its base level, decentralized credentials can be viewed similarly to a crypto wallet – with each different type of credential (i.e. a University Diploma, proof of age, etc.) taking the form of a “token” within each individual’s decentralized wallet.
Trillions of megabytes of data are created every day, much of it unverified – leading to a host of issues such as fraud, misinformation, scams, and a breakdown in trust online. On-chain credentials can help restore trust by giving individuals piece of mind that the data they are interacting with is authentic and verifiable.
When it comes to decentralized identity, it’s about shifting power away from centralized actors and putting individuals in control of their “stuff” – their credentials, identifying documents, music, data, and everything in between!

Episode 113 - TóróNet - Empowering community-driven development in emerging economies with blockchain
00:44:28
In episode 113, we’re excited to welcome Bolaji Akinboro and Arkan Akin, Co-Founder’s of TóróNet, a Layer-1 blockchain with a vision for a world of access where finance and technology serve communities so they can fulfill their aspirations for a better life. We discuss how blockchain can drive financial and social inclusion in emerging economies, how Web3 tools can support smallholder farmers, why blockchain is well suited to address some of the most pressing international development challenges, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
When it comes to international development efforts, real change happens at the community level, led by last mile communities. As such, it’s important to make sure that new technologies like blockchain are accessible to these communities and have a simple User Experience (UX)/User Interface (UI).
Technology alone won’t solve the world’s most pressing international development challenges, so it’s important to partner with local and international NGOs, governments, and communities when using blockchain technology to implement international development projects.
When onboarding new individuals to Web3, it’s important to lead with the benefits, not the technology. NGOs and community members don’t necessarily care about the tech behind a project, but rather the benefits and impact of the project itself.

Episode 114 - Givepact - Reimagining donor engagement with crypto, proof of impact NFTs, and DAOs
00:37:26
In episode 114, we’re excited to welcome Alicia Cepeda Maule and Steven Aguiar of Givepact, a crypto philanthropy platform that allows individuals to support the causes they care about while joining a donor-led social impact DAO. We discuss how Web3 tools can address the pain points felt by nonprofits, using proof of impact NFTs to recognize donors, the power of DAOs as a new tool to build community and engage donors, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Web3 can help reimagine how we engage donors, growing the relationship from one that is passive and transactional, to one where donors play an active role in the organization’s activities and governance.
Proof of Impact NFTs are a valuable tool to recognize donor contributions, creating a transparent on-chain record of donations while gamifying the donation process and incentivizing donors to continue giving.
Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) create opportunities to democratize decision making amongst the community and build a strong community of champions for charitable causes.

Episode 115 - Navigate - Optimizing global mapping with blockchain, AI, and crowdsourced data
00:43:21
In episode 115, we’re excited to welcome Ali Husain, Advisor at Navigate, a Web3 organization using blockchain, AI, and crowdsourcing to optimize global mapping. We discuss how they’re using next generation technologies to improve mapping data, the power of decentralized communities to crowdsource data, using Web3 tools to incentivize community participation, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
The average individual regularly contributes data to mobile applications (such as a map, social media platform, online marketplace, etc.) to the benefit of the corporation, but are rarely rewarded for their contributions. Web3 enables new opportunities to decentralize the crowdsourcing of data and recognize users for their contributions with token rewards.
Currently, most data is not openly available to the public. By crowdsourcing high quality map data and imagery, and making it open to the public, it will catalyze new use cases that are in the public good.
Web3 solutions, including the self-custody of data, may not be for everyone at this time, but as more people start to understand the importance of data sovereignty, it’s important to have decentralized solutions that give individuals the opportunity to take ownership of and make decisions related to their personal data.

Nature is the first truly decentralized system. Mycelium networks and Aspen networks serve as a great example of this and demonstrate the resilience that comes with a decentralized network.
The natural and digital worlds have traditionally been viewed as separate, and sometimes even paradoxical. Web3 presents new opportunities to celebrate nature through art, community, and creating new mediums for individuals to connect with nature.
New technological movements have traditionally been led by men and have excluded women and non-binary folks. In Web3, there is an opportunity to build a more inclusive ecosystem from the ground level and ensure that the space is representative.

--Key Takeaways--
An important starting point for nonprofits starting to engage with Web3 is education. It’s important to take the time to learn about the ins-and-outs of Web3, including the benefits and risks, and joining online communities such as Discord groups & Twitter/X spaces to start building your network.
“Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” Building a culture of organizational resilience is key to success in Web3. This includes open communication with the Board of Directors and staff about the realities of Web3, not being afraid of innovation, and being prepared for market volatility, setbacks, and failures.
Blockchain and AI give nonprofits the ability to engage in important capacity building activities, like predictive analytics, that have been happening in the private sector for a long time, but have traditionally been out of reach for nonprofits.
“Find your sandbox” - start small by finding what you and your organization are comfortable with, for example accepting crypto donations, and then build from there.

In episode 118, we’re excited to welcome G.D. Anderson, Founder of Honey Badges, an NFT community dedicated to funding changemakers. We discuss how Web3 will transform donor engagement, DAOs and the power of decentralized grant making, stories of impact from the grassroots changemakers they’ve supported,6 inclusion in Web3, and more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Traditional grantmaking is highly centralized, benefits larger charitable organizations, and is not accessible to grassroots changemakers. Web3 can help address this by decentralizing the grantmaking process and putting decision making power in the hands of the community.
Decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) are a great tool to transform donor engagement and organize the community around causes. The traditional donor-charity relationship is transactional and uninspired, and Web3 tools like DAOs can give the average donor more of an opportunity to participate in the cause and see the impact of their donation.
When it comes to building a more inclusive Web3, onboarding is essential. This includes creating onboarding experiences and tools geared towards individuals and communities who are traditionally excluded or underserved.

Episode 119 - Giveth - Building the future of giving by empowering a global “decentralized altruistic community”
00:30:42
In episode 119, we’re excited to welcome Mitch, DAO Steward at Giveth, a community-driven movement to transform the way we fund nonprofits and social causes. We discuss how they are using Web3 tools to reimagine philanthropy and the donor experience, DAOs and Giveth’s “Decentralized Altruistic Community”, optimizing public goods funding with conviction voting and quadratic funding, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
Traditionally, donors are rewarded for their contributions with a tax receipt and will often receive thank you letters and small gifts from charities. Web3 opens the door to more engaging rewards and recognition opportunities including special tokens which can be exchanged for rewards or sold on secondary markets, opportunities to participate in a DAO, token-gated NFTs, and more.
Quadratic Funding provides greater matching funds to projects with the most unique donations, not those that just receive the most money. It empowers smaller donors by amplifying the impact of their contribution and minimizing the disproportionate impact of wealthier donors.
Smaller nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and informal social movements are often excluded from traditional fundraising mediums, despite often being the ones implementing real change locally. By decentralizing the giving process, and creating new mechanisms for verifying projects, it can ensure that grassroots changemakers who are working on the frontline get the funding they need.

--Key Takeaways--
It is important to be realistic about the challenges in Web3, including that there will be bad actors and scams. As such, nonprofits need to really focus their initial efforts on knowledge acquisition, and learning about all the ins-and-outs of Web3
In addition to being a valuable tool to diversify fundraising efforts, Web3 tools also present exciting new opportunities to engage community members in the story behind wishes, and the incredible value they bring to the lives of children and their families.
When engaging with Web3, as with any technology, there will be set backs, including fundraising projects that don’t meet their desired objective. As such, it’s important to develop organizational resiliency and be prepared to treat set backs as learning experiences.

Episode 120 - Chatting open source standards, digital media, and being a Founder in Web3 with Adam Helfgott
00:33:44
In episode 120, we’re excited to welcome Adam Helfgott, Founder & Advisor of several tech and Web3 companies including Valence, AliceNet, AdLedger, and Madhive. We discuss being a Founder in Web3, advice for emerging entrepreneurs, on-chain identity, blockchain and data privacy, digital media in Web3, and much more.
--Three Key Takeaways--
When onboarding Web2 companies to Web3, it’s important to lead with the benefits (such as the security, efficiency, and transparency) of the technology, and not the technology itself (blockchain).
Web3 is built around the ethos of transparency, decentralization, and open source. The advent of blockchain provides an opportunity to return to the open source vision of the internet, and to collectively implement open source standards.
If you’re interested in building with blockchain, it’s important not to do so just for the sake of using blockchain. The projects that will ultimately fail are those that are trying to get in on the hype of Web3, but don’t have a legitimate use case for the technology.

Episode 121 - IMPT - Building “The Planet’s Loyalty Programme” with blockchain-powered carbon credits
00:42:56
In episode 121, we’re excited to welcome Denis Creighton, CEO of IMPT, a platform that allows individuals to earn carbon credits, and offset their carbon footprint while shopping for the things they love. We discuss some of the challenges with carbon offsets, and how blockchain can address them, how their innovative ERC-20 token helps individuals verifiably offset their carbon footprint, building partnerships in Web3 for climate action, and much more.6
--Three Key Takeaways--
Carbon offsets have unfortunately gotten a bad rap lately due to concerns around the quality and verifiability of some of key carbon credit issuers. Blockchain and NFTs can help ensure the impact of each credit can be verified, and that there is no duplication in credits beings issued.
When it comes to climate action, it’s important to make it simple and easy for the average individual to participate. IMPT reduces barriers to participating in carbon markets by directly linking carbon offsets to an activity that most individuals do daily or weekly.
All climate action must start somewhere – and by directly tying carbon offsets to consumer retail, it can help create a peer-pressure-driven network effect that encourages companies to get involved and compete to offer the most IMPT tokens to consumers.
