21 Nov 2022 | S01 E10 - Simon Monk | 00:58:55
Monk (noun) - a member of a religious community of men typically living under vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. This one didn't get the memo. He's a radio guy who's been there, done that and got the branded bomber jacket. Simon was once Foxy's boss, so expect some "one time, at Signal" chat; along with incredible stories involving cat litter, pork balls, a death threat, a never before heard revelation and some excellent stories about his former boss and friend, John Myers. This episode contains strong language and adult content.

06 Feb 2023 | S02 E01 - Joel Ross | 01:08:28
We often get messages to Crunch & Roll Towers, suggesting guests that people would like to hear featured. And the one name that comes up more than any other is Joel Ross. Those who know him will know exactly why that is. And if you don't know him, you'll understand by the end of this episode. One person who DM'd us said "I hear a lot of Joel's stories, they impress and horrify me in equal measure". Joel is a 100mph story-telling machine, and his stories all happen to be solid gold. And for the cherry on the top, he doesn't really have a filter. So, after a little bit of geekery at the beginning, strap in for the story of an eventful trip to Amsterdam with a well-known former colleague; How he had to deal with a bailiff at the door during a breakfast show; And the real story about his departure from Radio 1. There's some fruity language and adult content, which we know is the reason you're here.

05 Dec 2022 | S01 E12 - Rick Houghton | 00:56:54
Dear reader, it is late on a Friday evening. The 969media team are toasting the the completion of another barnstorming episode of Crunch & Roll with a dry sherry. Then comes the message. Perhaps some parts of this episode could, as the great Frank Spencer once said, get us in a little bit of trouble. Immediately our heroes spring into action, armed with nought but a chinagraph pencil and a razor blade. Hours later, the necessary edits have been made. The tape on the floor goes into the safe, perhaps one day to see the light of day... What is left is a 9.75/10, but at least we won't get sued. Rick Houghton is this week's guest. He's a legend of radio in the north of England and in Dubai. Part of the all-conquering Radio City line up of the 90s and 2000s and pioneer of radio in the Middle East. His stories include giving away gold bars on air in Dubai, a PD who lived in a campervan in the radio station car park, and being more popular than Boyzone in Liverpool! CAUTION: This episode contains a mention of an Optimod (as well as strong language and adult content).
03 Jun 2024 | S03 E20 - James Heming | 01:29:06
We've featured some presenters who are synonymous with the stations where they plied their trade for an impressive amount of time - Fresh at Beacon and Elliott Webb at BRMB for example - and there's no denying that James Heming is Mr Invicta. He spent the majority of his career at a station in Kent, somewhere he admits he couldn't have pointed to on a map before moving there! And for an incredible 19 of years of his time there, he was on Breakfast. Not bad for a cover jock... He also opens up about his ill-fated stint on XFM breakfast; his bromance with a well-known fellow Invicta presenter; and how he dropped the F bomb on at 8.10 one morning! So tune in and rip the knob off! (If you know, you know...)

27 Nov 2023 | S03 E04 - Paul Harper | 01:03:36
We've got a few 'firsts' going on in this episode. The first first is that Paul is the first (OK, stop saying first) Scottish guest on the podcast. We'll be honest, we're not that clued-up about radio north of the border, so it was interesting to hear about the differences between it and radio 'down south'. Who needs contracts?! Second first is that he's 'done' Australia, and in style. No messing about - straight on 2Day FM. No big deal, just hanging out with Kyle and Jackie O in Sydney. And the final first is he's our first guest who's on the radio in Canada. And he's kindly offered to put up any Crunch & Roll listeners in his home if you want to visit Toronno (apparently you don't say the 'T'). Thanks Paul! You're going to find out about the debauchery of Scotland's most rock and roll radio station; how he ended up being Japanese; and the consequences of giving callers funny names on PhoneBox. There's strong language in this episode, just how you like it.

15 Jan 2024 | S03 E09 - Nigel ’Fresh’ Freshman | 01:14:13
The guest on this episode could be called a 'one station man'.... that is if he hadn't moved somewhere else almost exactly ten years ago! Nigel Freshman*, or Fresh to his listeners, was undeniably 'Mr Beacon' until his love affair with the station turned sour and he moved to Smooth West Midlands where he still plies his trade. So he's pretty much a legend in the West Midlands and can’t walk down Bilston high street without getting mobbed! It's another episode full of tremendous stories and brutal honesty. Well, life would be boring if we all thought the same things... He tells us about a recent medical diagnosis, the crazy times with a former co-presenter, how his fancy car put him in a new bosses bad books, his part in what is now the most cited case in media law... and his thoughts on his final couple of years at Beacon, in which Foxy admits to never being so awkward...

17 Oct 2022 | S01 E05 - Graham Torrington | 00:52:48
Is there any need to write anything here? It's Graham Torrington for goodness sake! Well, if you're not aware of Graham's work, let me tell you, much has changed in the time you've been in a coma... GT is the doyen of late night radio. His show, Late Night Love, was on over 40 stations in its heyday, with an audience in excess of ONE MILLION! Basically, he's about as close to UK radio royalty as you can get. Crunch & Roll host John Fox chats to Graham about his early career in the 'Flying Eye'; the unique bond with a late night audience which led to some scary incidents; and how Richard Park fired him twice (but sent someone else to do it!) Contains strong language and adult themes.

13 Nov 2023 | S03 E02 - Alex Lester | 01:11:47
As nicknames go, The Dark Lord is right up there. But it could have been so different for our guest if a former boss had got his way and convinced him to go with Red. Alex Lester is truly deserving of the description 'legend'. Three decades at Radio 2 for goodness sake! He's got some stories from those times, mainly involving Sir Terry, as well as delving into the beginning of his career and the disastrous launch of a station he was involved with. But the tale of his fan mail nearly made us soil ourselves. Be warned! There's very strong language and adult content in this episode.

08 Jan 2024 | S03 E08 - Tim Lichfield | 01:15:57
Hold on to your headphones, Tiger Tim's roaring onto Crunch & Roll, and he's grrrrrrrrrreat! (Sorry). Early on in his chat with Foxy he tells us that it is "no holes barred"... He's happy to to go through the many highs and some notable lows of his career, spanning Capital and BRMB to TFM and Minster, and plenty more besides. We've cover how he was once told he couldn't say his own name right by one manager, the magic of warming up for Chris Tarrant every morning, and turning down a big gig for the sake of his health and sanity. There's strong language and adult content in this episode. And if you are affected by any of the issues raised in this episode, you're not alone and there's help and support at www.drinkaware.co.uk.

22 Jan 2024 | S03 E10 - Dick Stone | 01:15:56
When considering a 'radio name', you could literally choose ANYTHING. But we find out early on in this episode that Dick chose, well, Dick. To be fair, it did lead to the best named breakfast show radio have ever seen! But as he helpfully suggests, "Don't Google 'Dick Stone'". Dick is a programming stalwart, running Ram, Trent, the Hit Music Network, Capital East Mids and the Smooth network. Most people reading this will probably have worked for him for goodness sake! But we also find out about his days before he was the boss, when he had to mimic another presenter to get his first professional gig. We also find out that he once took some presenters hostage in his office. Kind of.

26 Feb 2024 | S03 E14 - Dave Kelly | 01:22:01
Has there ever been a more iconic evening show than Dave Kelly’s epoch-defining broadcast on Galaxy? If you were to write the recipe for the perfect evening show, you’d use all the ingredients that made Dave’s show so perfect. Daft features – Tick. Dicking about – Tick. Pushing the boundaries of what you get away with – Tick. Bangers – Tick. But what made this young fella from Northampton become the Don of Dusk? Luckily you’ve found the podcast to answer that very question. Galaxy wasn’t the only notable station on his CV. He had a good run at Capital and even turned his hand at doing breakfast on Radio City. He spills the beans on how all this came to pass, and in the case of City, the unfortunate ending. He also reveals he might be one of the biggest radio geeks out there (don’t get him started on split jingles); how he cost Galaxy tens of thousands of pounds due to a couple of significant cock-ups; and how he’s not the only Dave Kelly in radio. Dave now lives in the Cayman Islands and does shows for stations all over the world. Sucks to be Dave… But prepare to play the world’s smallest violin when plays the sympathy card regarding the price of frozen produce in the Caribbean.

01 Apr 2024 | S03 E16 - Steve Power | 01:06:21
Стив Пауэр любит поезда. Just a little message for anyone who can understand Russian there. That doesn't include the guest on this episode, Steve Power, who ended up accidentally studying the language. There may have been drink involved. Steve must have been one of the longest serving breakfast show jocks ever. 17 BLOOMIN' YEARS! And not your lightweight 6am start nonsense. He was waking up the South of England from 5.30am! Most recently he's been on air at a much more civilised time of day, but his beloved Wave 105 has just been Greatest Hits Radioified, so he's hanging up his headphones... for now at least. What a career to date though. He made tea at BBC Radio Sussex; ran Southern FM and Power FM under Richard Park; and went national on Virgin Radio too. But it's his mighty stint at Wave 105 that he's probably best known for. During his chat with Foxy he talks about how he didn't enjoy being a PD; how he has no time for people who live in radio's past, and tells us about a case of mistaken identity at a nightclub PA in Wellingborough!

09 Sep 2022 | Crunch & Roll - Series 1 Preview | 00:02:01
Need to find out how to bookend like the pros? Looking for tips on how to tease the 763rd play of the latest Ed Sheeran song in a new and exciting way? Want to find out how to be number one in the 38-41 year old, hat wearing, bi-lingual, bus driver market in Pontefract that all the advertisers are clamouring for?
Well, this podcast is not for you.
Crunch & Roll explores the lighter side of working in the radio industry.
Host John “Foxy” Fox chats to some of the great and the good (and the available) who made their name sitting in a padded room talking to themselves, tackling subjects radio professionals really want to know about, like... Who is the most awful celeb they encountered? Did you ever see the radio station ghost? (Come on, they all seem to have one.) And what’s the best song to play when you need to go for a wee?
So join Foxy (whose industry accolades range from Emap Awards Best Newcomer Award 2001 to getting a medal for completing the BRMB Walkathon on a mobility scooter due to suffering from gout) for a preview of what you can expect from series one of YOUR Crunch & Roll.
13 Feb 2023 | S02 E02 - Lucio | 01:00:16
All aboard the latest episode of Crunch & Roll! It features Lucio chatting to John Fox about his eventful radio career and what he's up to now. See if you can work it out from the subtle clues in this description... He's been on pretty much every major commercial station in Britain - XFM, Absolute, Capital, Kerrang, Galaxy... Actually, he's been on every commercial station in Britain as presenter of Hit 40 UK. In this episode he tells us the story of how he almost got himself and his group PD shot; How he would wind up some guy called Ashley (who just so happened to pay his wages) on air; And how he got sacked by an all-staff email - YAY! RADIO! Would he choo-choo-choose to make a return to radio or has his broadcasting career permanently hit the buffers? You'll find that out too. There's strong language and adult content. Enjoy the ride!
28 Nov 2022 | S01 E11 - Jim Coulson | 00:58:13
Have you worked at Kerrang? Jim has. Xfm? He's worked there too. Net FM? Bit niche, but he's plied his trade there too. Jim tells a great story, and he's got lots of them. Like the one about the boss who sacked him, then ended up his boss again somewhere else soon not long after. Awkward. And how collecting song requests on the critical illness ward for his hospital radio station made him a better person. And last but not least, the finer details of a catalogue of errors made by a former PD. Shots fired! This is a cracker - Enjoy! Oh, strong language and adult content etc.

10 Apr 2023 | S02 E10 - Chris Brooks | 01:13:57
We're always interested to hear how our guests get the radio 'bug', but it's fair to say if you gave us a million guesses as to Chris Brooks' story, we wouldn't have got it. WOW. This episode is the inspiring story of Chris' single-minded determination to achieve his dream of saying "ninety-five point eight" on the radio. Along with obvious talent and resolve, there was some pretty amazing bits of luck on the way too, along with a heart-warming chat with *checks notes* Parky(?!) Also hear how he first blagged his way on air, much to his bosses displeasure; a scary story from a stag-do in Vegas; and how he had a member of a boy-band review video games on his show. And listen right to the end for a bonus George Michael story. Contains strong language and adult content.

07 Nov 2022 | S01 E08 - Dan Morfitt | 00:40:21
Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! Dan! This week's guest is Dan Morfitt. Jurassic Park! He now resides in the good ol' US of America, but before he fled these isles, he worked at loads of big stations. Kerrang? Tick. Radio Aire? Absolutely. Key 103? Just a bit. Hallam FM? But of course. BRMB? Don't mind if I do. Foxy chats to him about the crazy days at Kerrang (the C word went up the transmitter, and a microphone went up... well, listen and find out), being drunk in-charge of an overnight show, and throwing peanuts at Steve Lamacq. As usual, there's naughty words and content you probably shouldn't let your kids listen to.

15 Apr 2024 | S03 E18 - Simon Logan | 01:05:08
On the advice of our legal team, which as regular listeners will know is a made up guy called Gary, we were advised to give this guest the chance to rebuke a serious accusation made against him by several previous guests on this podcast. So for the avoidance of doubt, SIMON LOGAN HAS NEVER THROWN A WHITEBOARD RUBBER AT ANYONE. Now that unpleasantness is out of the way... Simon was the guy on the Viking FM breakfast show when a fresh-faced young John Daniel Fox was travelling to college, drenched in Joop and wearing one of those colour-changing t-shirts. So, in the week that Viking FM celebrates its 40th birthday (and ceases to actually be Viking FM anymore, but let's not dwell on that), who better to get on than one of its legendary jocks. Simon may have been best known for his on-air wind up calls both in Hull and on Radio Aire in Leeds. In fact he put out a CD of the best wind ups and got into the top 20 of the actual album charts, sandwiched between two Britpop stalwarts! Most recently he's been plying his trade on BBC Radio Newcastle, a job that he got all by himself. But if a former Radio 1 legend had his way, he could have been his agent and taken a tidy 15%. More on that in the episode. And did you know he may have been the highest paid overnight guy ever? You will once you've listened. So many great stories and big laughs in this episode. Enjoy!

31 Oct 2022 | S01 E07 - Caroline Martin | 00:59:17
Have you ever wondered what life on a pirate radio ship was like? Well wonder no more, because in this episode, the excellent Caroline Martin reminisces about her frankly crazy experiences aboard the pirate radio ship, Ross Revenge. In her time on the high-seas she experienced a raid from the authorities, paranormal goings-on and a helicopter rescue in a violent storm. Kind of makes you grateful that the worst most of us have had to deal with is a sticky fader from when you spilt your can of Red Bull on the desk. You can hear the emotion in her voice as she takes us back with her to the middle of the North Sea. Then what happened when she finally had to come ashore? Listen to find out. Contains strong language and adult content.

04 Dec 2023 | S03 E05 - Jo Russell | 01:06:47
When we started this podcast, we wrote down a list of people we'd love to have on, and sitting close to the top (between the hairy cornflake and Alan Tichmarsh) was today's guest, Jo Russell. We've been pestering her to come on for ages but wasn't having any of it, until John upped the appearance fee to two bottles of Blossom Hill, then she was in! We worked with her for several years at BRMB and didn't know 10% of the stuff she talked about in this episode, so unless you're her mum, you probably don't have a clue either. There's the story of leading a double life in her early career - insurance sales person by day, radio presenter by night. There's the story about people pretending to be her in Nottingham at the height of her fame while on Trent. And how she once had a very pleasant sacking by one of radio's great managers. There's strong language in this episode (much to Jo's surprise!).

17 Feb 2025 | S04 E08 - Lee Thompson (Part 1) | 00:53:51
People often ask how we choose our guests. The answer is quite simple. People who've had varied and interesting careers and have a good story to tell. And it always helps if we know them. So getting this episode's guest on was a no-brainer. Lee Thompson has been a presenter, producer, author, head of music, TV guy... and is now part of the most listened to feature on UK radio. He tells a bloody good story, and he has plenty of them from working at Metro, Viking, Radio 2, Box TV and more. In this, the first of two parts, he chats to Foxy about how he heard the "phenomenal" demo of a 16 year old, future radio star; chatting with one of the 90s most iconic stars; and getting sacked from a radio station in Wales for doing something truly mad! Look out for part two, coming very soon.

24 Oct 2022 | S01 E06 - Warren Moore | 00:49:35
Warren Moore Moore Moore! How do we like him? A lot to be honest. Warren's been a stalwart of the industry for many years. He's known to listeners in Yorkshire, south Wales, Manchester, Birmingham and Gloucestershire. During the course of his chat with John Fox, we discover he could be the good boy of the radio industry. That's not to say he hasn't got some amazing stories in him. Like an unfortunate incident in a branded car; how a respected group programmer really didn't rate him; oh, and how he accidentally caused the national fuel crisis in 2002. As the Daily Record said, 'Blame Him'! Contains very strong language and adult themes.

10 Feb 2025 | S04 E06 - Allan Lake (Part 1) | 00:50:15
As Oscar Wild almost once said, "To lose one job may be regarded as a misfortune, to lose several looks like carelessness." John Fox's guest on this episode admits to getting sacked a lot. He also admits he struggles with "where the line is". There could be a correlation... Allan Lake is a brilliant, one-of-a-kind radio presenter. Lesser presenters would have sunk without trace after the feature that lost him his first job, but Allan came back stronger after every set back. He has a CV many of us could only dream of: Capital, Absolute, Power FM, Red Dragon, Galaxy, Viking... One of the most notable entries on his CV though was his iconic Capital Disney evening show. And where do you go after entertaining the kids, that's right, a porn station! He'll make it make sense. This is the first of another two-parter, in which he talks about accidentally taking the radio station off air before his first ever show; how he was hidden from a group PD; and what might explain his penchant for pushing things just that little bit too far. Look out for the second episode soon.

03 Apr 2023 | S02 E09 - David Dixon | 01:04:02
Nobody calls him David... unless he's in trouble. So from here on in, we'll use the moniker he's more commonly known by - Dixie. Dixie is one of the rare breed who are still plying their trade on the radio, after a long and successful career. He must be good! If you've not heard him on the radio before, then we reckon this episode might make you want to seek him out on Heart Yorkshire, where he co-presents the local Drive show with Emma Lenney. His stories are BRILLIANT. Find out about the (luke)warm welcome he got when starting work experience at his local station; the madness of trying to broadcast to Brighton in a studio that maybe wasn't quite up to the task; and how he had his eye on a personalised number-plate for when he inevitably got his a gig on Kiss. Although, we don't ever remember hearing him on Kiss... Contains strong language and adult content.

03 Feb 2025 | S04 E05 - Sally Bailey | 01:01:08
We've heard lots of reasons why people get into radio on this podcast. Often it stems from a childhood obsession, starting with good old Bedroom FM, then maybe doing mobile discos, hospital radio and what have you... It's almost a calling. For the guest of this episode though, that really wasn't the case. She just wanted to dress up as her local radio station's mascot! After realising her ambition, she then went on to become one of the most heard voices on UK radio. Sally Bailey presented the ubiquitous, showbiz evening show Music Control. She also had iconic stints on Galaxy and Red Dragon, forming memorable double-acts with with Kam Kelly and Kevin Hughes. In fact, if you were to say "Kam and..." or "Kevin and..." to a generation of radio people they'd all know the only acceptable response is "Sally". These days, Sally is one of the hardest-working and most recognisable voiceovers in the UK, as well as doing a daily show on Virgin Radio Chilled. In this episode hear about how she worked for free for a ridiculously long time; which global mega-star made her cry; and who she did an "abysmal" demo with to try and get on Capital.

29 Jan 2024 | S03 E11 - Simon Ross | 01:09:38
A greased eel. The fur of a chinchilla. A babies bum. When it comes to smoothness, this lot just aren't cutting the mustard, because Rossie's voice is smoother than an otter in socks, sliding down a lubed-up iceberg. But you don't have a CV like his by simply having a great voice. His claim that he's the only person Parky never called up on the XD to give the hairdryer treatment to is probably testament to that. He's had stints working at Radio City, Radio Aire and imperial phase Capital, but now hosts one of the biggest shows around, breakfast on Greatest Hits Radio. And with such an accomplished CV it makes sense that he's a brilliant story teller with brilliant stories to tell. Like the time he pinched a celebs booze stash at Party in the Park; how he almost didn't do his first show at Capital thanks to nerves; and an unfortunate (but hilarious) selfie incident. And did we mention his voice..?

24 Jun 2024 | S03 E23 - Paul Hayes | 01:10:30
We all have those moments in our lives where we look back and think, why did I do that. In radio terms, Paul Hayes 'why did I do that' moment was HUGE. Let's just say it involved a Richard Park, Ashley Tabor and a pizza. Paul's done a decade on the mighty Magic in London, but his career has taken in big stations in the UK, Canada and UAE, so the guides us through stories from his time at Southern FM, Galaxy, Heart and more. Including how he once rearranged a former PD's entire house, much to his anger; how his brother made a joke about his career trajectory that unfortunately came true; and how one boss took him out with "a wad of cash" in an attempt to change his mind about leaving!

26 Sep 2022 | S01 E02 - Mark Somers | 00:39:13
Mark might not be a household name like a few of the guests on Crunch & Roll, but anyone familiar with his work knows that doesn't mean he's not a great character of the industry. He was a Viking FM stalwart; plied his trade on the Hit Music Network (but didn't know what stations he was actually on); moved to Beacon, Wyvern and BRMB; all before the lure of Nile FM drew him to Cairo. Foxy's chat with him is honest, funny and at times, introspective. He covers topics from how he got himself removed from Michelle Collins' Christmas card list, to the unusual place he was when he received a job offer. This episode contains adult themes and strong language.
Listen to Mark's excellent new podcast, Host Protocol now, where he talks to valued voices from Egypt and beyond. From movie stars and directors, to influencers and journalists. From the world of movies, music, sport, business and much more. https://podfollow.com/1637436284/view
19 Sep 2022 | S01 E01 - Robin Banks | 01:00:06
Robin Banks is Foxy's first guest on the Crunch & Roll podcast. Most people listening will know of Robin and have listened to him on Atlantic 252, Kiss 100, Beat 106 or BRMB. He's a massive on-air presence, a creative pioneer and one of the hardest working people in radio. But as with the best presenters, he admits that he has, on occasion, been a 'bit of a dick'! In this episode find out what led to him ripping a studio door off, how he threw a former boss under a bus with Jay-Z and and why a disastrous debut on Galaxy made him check into rehab. This episode contains adult themes and strong language.

14 Nov 2022 | S01 E09 - Shaun Tilley | 00:48:46
There are some names in the radio industry that need no introduction. Shaun Tilley could be one of them, but I'm duty-bound to do one anyway. You know Shaun, of course you do. He's been on the radio in Wales, Scotland and England. And although he's already racked up four decades on the wireless, you wouldn't bet against him appearing on the Northern Irish airwaves before long! In this chat with Foxy, he talks about his time at Radio Luxembourg, Capital, Radio City, Radio Clyde and more. There's some industry legends names dropped (spoiler alert: Kenny Everett). And there's a story about a nightclub in Glasgow called Bonkers. Contains some fruity language and one or two tales not suitable for younger ears.

19 Feb 2024 | S03 E13 - Dirk Anthony | 01:00:24
Dirk Anthony is one of the most famous, or for some, infamous, radio bosses there's ever been. He pretty much ran the show at GWR and then Gcap, after the merger with Capital. When you weald so much power for so long it's difficult for some to see beyond the 'big, scary boss' tag, and forget there's s real person with their own story, dealing with their own pressures. So, not having had too many dealings Dirk in the past, Foxy was a bit nervous about grilling "the Guvnor"... but it's probably fair to say Dirk was more nervous! We started right at the beginning, taking in his slightly fortuitous entry into the industry after initially taking on a trade. He lifts the lid on the GWR / Capital merger, and muses on a job he could / should have taken on. And he addresses the "bloody Aussies" feeling some people had, with great humility and understanding. Oh, he also tells us his real name - listen right to the end for that. And whatever you thought you knew about Dirk, prepare to find out the real story.
Dirk is now a partner of the consultancy company Blank White Page (https://blankwhitepage.co.uk/) and has made the incredibly kind offer to help any Crunch & Roll listener who's struggling with life after radio to understand who their skills and experience can be invaluable in the outside world. 01 Jul 2024 | S03 E24 - Paul 'Griffo' Griffiths | 01:11:55
Hey man! It's Griffo! For those of you not familiar with Griffo's work, he's a legend of the airwaves in North Wales and Yorkshire. He's tighter than a gnat's chuff and has a voice that Morgan Freeman would kill for. As one former boss told him in a snoop, "You make my station sound BIG"! Foxy's know Griffo for almost a quarter of a century having worked with him at V*king FM, so he has some stories to hit him with off the bat. And there's plenty of stuff he didn't know about too, including how he got his first break on air at 16; how an engineer fell on him mid-link; and there's a classic instance of a laissez-faire interpretation of GDPR with regards Phonebox. He also reads out a memo sent by an eccentric MD in 1999, subject line: Men's Toilets. It's INCREDIBLE.

Us radio folk wear the term anorak as a badge of honour. But no matter how big a radio geek you think you are, you're really not, because John Foster is the Anorak in Chief. As Foxy chats to him, he produces pieces of paraphernalia, liberated from former workplaces, each with a story attached. He also has an incredible memory for details such as radio station addresses, straplines and trim levels of branded cars he's owned! 27 Feb 2023 | S02 E05 - Emma Scott | 01:07:50
Emma Scott is not a police officer. She wanted to be but ended up on a YTS at her local radio station instead. The constabulary's loss is certainly radio's gain. We LOVED our chat with Emma. It's honest, hilarious and FULL of showbiz encounters. She certainly made her feelings about a certain red-haired, Mancunian crooner absolutely clear! So get ready to find out which station she found soul destroying; which boss she called the very worst swear word; and what she thinks about the presenter at every radio station who drinks from a big Sports Direct mug. 17 Jun 2024 | S03 E22 - Mark Collins | 01:20:36
What? Another legend from the station formerly known as Wave 105? Ambassador, you're spoiling us. Mark Collins is another stalwart of the South Coast radio scene and still plies his trade on the mighty 105.2FM (or DAB 11B / 11C in new money), under it's new name, Great Hits Radio. You might have heard of it... But Mark had a career longer than most before he'd ever been to the South Coast taking in Chiltern, Red Dragon, Radio City, Hallam and one single show on TalkSport amongst others. Highlights of his chat with Foxy include learning the lesson of taking a job just for the money might not always be the best option; how he was effectively guarantor to a well know presenter he wanted to hire against the wishes of his boss; and the best story about giving away a Panasonic boombox in South Wales that you'll ever hear.

06 Mar 2023 | S02 E06 - Martin Kelner | 01:02:31
Listeners to Five Live's Fighting Talk will know each episode ends with the two highest scorers defending a controversial or unpopular opinion in order to win the episode. So, in that vain: Martin Kelner knows nothing about radio and deserved to be paid less than a horse. Of course he knows nothing about radio. He's only spent the best part of half a century in the industry. Radio 2? Radio Who more like! So what if he introduced Caroline Aherne and Jake Yapp to us? Victoria Wood was absolutely right to walk out on his interview with her. And Edouard Lapaglie has carried him for years! Actually, that might be a Defend the Indefensible too far. Martin is, as Foxy puts it, radio royalty. So we insist you be upstanding while listening to this episode. There's strong language and we must warn you that this episode includes the funniest story ever told on this podcast, so spare undergarments may be required.

Of course he's one of the biggest names in the business and who's been on Radio Aire, BRMB and Capital, as well as an actual GENERATION on 103FM in Manchester, so won't need too much of an introduction. For some people having two chart hit records would constitute a great achievement. Others would be over the moon having written several successful musicals. And plenty would rest on their laurels after giving stand-up comedy a bash. Not Daryl Denham though. No, no, no. Not content with taking the charts, theatres and back-rooms of pubs by storm, he also had an incredible career in radio. Well, it would be weird if he didn't, what with this being a radio podcast and all... In this episode Foxy chats to Daryl about how he's not a radio geek (I KNOW, RIGHT?); the strange and unwieldly item he bought on his last day at Hallam; and how his adults-only, late night show didn't go down well in Newcastle. 30 Jan 2023 | Crunch & Roll - Series 2 Preview | 00:01:48
This is Crunch & Roll - a window into the dysfunctional world of the radio industry. If you loved the last series, then you'll love what's to come. If you didn't, what are you even doing here? In the coming weeks you'll hear stories about how one of our guests almost got himself, and his group PD shot; How another thought he was about to hit the bigtime, only to be handed his sandwiches wrapped in a roadmap; Another was sent to a newly-acquired station to be a spy; And another who may or may not have been responsible for the collapse of a top-flight footballer's marriage. Sensationalist? Us? This is just a taste of what's to come. Oh, and as you've probably come to expect, there's plenty of industrial language involved.
20 Jan 2025 | S04 E01 - Ian Camfield (Part 1) | 00:56:20
Some of our guests dip their toe in the exotic world of overseas radio but end up gravitating back to the UK. We get the impression that Ian Camfield though would rather lose a limb than return home. He's and XFM legend - there from the start and through the glory days - but plies his trade in the US nowadays... but more of that in part two. In part one we concentrate on the Camfield origin story, including which Radio One behemoth invited him into his (very loud) studio when he was just aged eight, and started him on his stellar career trajectory. Also find out how the stigma of working on a certain station almost meant his XFM dream died before it had even started, and which kings-of-rock asked him to help get their personal trainer a US visa. This is part one of two, so keep an eye out for the second on this very feed. We didn't plan to have loads of former Capital FM legends on this series of Crunch & Roll - in fact we don't plan anything - but we're very pleased it turned out that way. Neil Bentley's happiest times were not at the big 95.8 though, they were at a another often featured station that, like him, were big on dance and R&B. Neil's not spoken about his career since leaving the industry over a decade ago, so prepare to learn. And prepare to pick your jaw off the floor after some of the tales that would be best described 'SO radio'. There's the story of the brutal rejection letter from Radio 1 that might not have been all it seemed; he tells us how one of the world's biggest DJs offered to carry his records into an Egyptian-themed nightclub in Barnsley for him; and his embarrassing interaction with the Queen of Pop. shaft /ʃɑːft/ verb past tense: shafted; past participle: shafted vulgar slang, informal treat (someone) harshly or unfairly.
There are moments in some people’s career where they’re riding on the crest of a wave and an exciting new challenge comes along and tempts them away with promises that are too good to say no to. Then… see above. Adam Cole is a stalwart of the Manchester radio scene and has been for a very long time. In fact, he’s worked at every major station in the market there, and at one notable example FOUR times. His Galaxy breakfast show was legendary, hugely successful and multi award-winning. And it’s probably his success there that set the scene for what was to come. In this episode we find out why he got sacked from hospital radio, which legend he eagerly got CDs out for before his breakfast show, and hear about a wind up call that went a bit too well. This is the first of two episodes with Adam – look out for the second on this feed very soon.

11 Dec 2023 | S03 E06 - Paul Carrington | 01:52:37
Foxy calls him The Professor. You might know him as The Funster. But his passport says Paul Carrington. Paul has to be one of the most well known presenters in the north of England and is guaranteed to have worked on a station near you, if you live north of Sutton-cum-Duckmanton. Piccadilly, Signal, Viking, Buzz, Minster, Pulse - We'll let Paul tell you the rest. There's stories about working for Timmy Mallett (along with Professor Brain Cox, Chris Evans and Nick Robinson); how he helped the biggest pop group of the 80s escape a hoard of screaming fans (involves an old Ford Escort); and how he's embarrassed about being The Funster. It's a long one (so we'll keep this bit short), but absolutely worth sticking with to the end. Enjoy!
26 May 2024 | S03 E19 - Clive Dickens | 01:01:37
For the two of you who don't know, Clive was one of the big guns in UK radio management. The King of Capital. The Duke of Jack. The Archbishop of Absolute. But then he went to Australia, and took a lifetime of radio knowledge and enough stories to fill your average-sized encyclopaedia with him. So very early (too early) one Sunday, when British Summer Time and Australian Eastern Standard Time conveniently aligned, we embarked on a mission to liberate and disseminate some of this knowledge and these stories from the Southern hemisphere. So prepare to find out how Elton John was responsible for him getting into radio, how he almost introduced Posh and Becks back in the 90s, and how he's not scared of Richard Park! There's also some consumer advice on how you might go about buying a major radio group, so if your in the market for one, you might want to make some notes.

Foxy has referenced many of his radio heroes before - Moyles, Mark & Lard, Robin Banks - but the biggest poster on teenage Foxy's bedroom wall was that of Scott Makin. It was his husky, Teesside tones and his lovely leather jacket that did it for him. But listen to the end to find out how our awe-fill presenter embarrassed himself in front of his icon the first time they met. If you've lived in Yorkshire or the North East of England in the last 30ish years there's a good chance you've heard Scott doing his thing. He is undeniably 'King of Mids' but there's the most perfect story of how he ended up presenting Breakfast at Century, and how I did his best to sabotage this gem of a job offer. You'll also hear about the time he met a former inmate listener in a bar, and a Full Monty performance featuring former guest Joel Ross (and what he'd do for £30 in the late 90s). Warning: Contains gratuitous, misty-eyed mentions of Viking FM.

22 Jan 2025 | S04 E02 - Ian Camfield (Part 2) | 00:43:23
Some of our guests dip their toe in the exotic world of overseas radio but end up gravitating back to the UK. We get the impression that Ian Camfield though, would rather lose a limb than return home. He's and XFM legend - there from the start and through the glory days which we hard about in part one of this two-parter. In this second part though, we cross the pond to the good ol' US of A where we hear the crazy circumstances of how he got his first gig over there; the cut-throat world of American radio; and a man called Don Belucas. Ian's on Alt 103.7 in Dallas which you might find tricky to listen to outside America, so if you want to hear him, get some of these classic Camfield cuts in your ears: https://aircheckdownloads.com/audio-search?term=ian+camfield&sort_bef_combine=relevance_DESC And he's got his own fancy website: https://iancamfield.com/

25 Mar 2024 | S03 E15 - Ben Jones | 01:09:34
Before we started recording, Ben Jones told us he has a namesake in the radio industry and wanted to check we had the right guy. Er, yeah. We're sure. Ben was ever-present on the original Virgin Radio / Absolute Radio for a decade for goodness sake. He now plies his trade on the new Virgin Radio (amongst other pies he has his fingers in...), but it hasn't all been plain sailing to get there. After leaving Absolute there were some pretty dark times which Ben opens up about, and some of us will be able to relate to. But the good times majorly outweigh the bad, and he tells us all about them. Like blagging his way to Spain with a Capital legend; how he was the last person to interview David Bowie(!), and how "nobody gave a shit about his shiny trousers"! About those other pies Ben has his fingers in then. As well as radio he's also a prolific podcaster (can't see that ever catching on but, whatever) AND A BLOOMIN' MOVIE PRODUCER! His new film Love to Hate: Nickelback is about, well, sure you can work that one out. Many radio people will totally relate to that title after playing Rockstar for the 7000th time! If you're listening to the podcast the day it comes out, you'll be able to see the film in the actual cinema from Wednesday (27th March 2024). And it's a bit good, irrespective of how you feel about its titular subjects.
Love to Hate: Nickelback is in cinemas on Wednesday 27th and Saturday 30th March 2024. 10 Oct 2022 | S01 E04 - Emma Louise Jones | 00:48:18
Foxy's guest this episode of Crunch & Roll is Emma Louise Jones. Emma is an increasingly familiar face in sports broadcasting where she can be seen at Elland Road reporting for her beloved Leeds United, and on Premier Sports covering rugby league. But it was on the radio where her star began to rise. Emma and Foxy chat about her journalistic beginnings, how they ended up working together on a breakfast show on her home-town station, and getting a gig on 5Live with Robbie Savage. It's a really warm, friendly and funny chat between two old friends. Contains strong language and adult themes.

20 Mar 2023 | S02 E08 - Kam Kelly | 01:08:55
The great thing about podcasting is we can see exactly where in the world people are listening. Crunch & Roll obviously has a strong following in the UK, but we also have listeners in such far-flung places as South Africa, Indonesia and French Guiana. But we also know there's a small but perfectly formed cohort of listeners about as far away from 'home' as it's possible to be: the Falkland Islands. And one of that number happens to be this episodes guest, Kam Kelly. But how did he get there? (Don't say aeroplane.) Well, he went in hard, starting his career at Radio 1 and ended up on the station he had always dreamed of being on as a kid. You'll have to listen to find out the rest. He chats about the biggest star in the world upset his co-host; bringing presenters four-packs of cider while they're on air; and why you should never say the word 'camel' to him. There's strong language in this episode.

18 Dec 2023 | S03 E07 - Darren Daley | 01:19:08
This episodes finds you just before Christmas 2023. Tis the season of good will to all men... except one former boss who features in this episode! But be assured the rest of Foxy's chat with Darren Daley is a real Christmas cracker. He's been in the game since Cliff Richard was number 1 in the charts with Saviours' Day, so has plenty of stories to tell. Luckily for us he's kept all his correspondence from radio stations from the last 35+ years, and reads out some of the more noteworthy examples. Fair to say he wasn't on former Radio 1 controller Johnny Beerling's Christmas card list. There's chat about how Radio City legend Phil Eason gave him his first break one memorable Boxing Day. And the tale of a naked Australian producer ruining the news on a unfortunately serious news day. There's strong language and adult content in this episode.
If you're a regular listener to the podcast, firstly thank you - we love you. But if you'd like to support the podcast / contribute to the 969media Christmas party, we'd be eternally grateful if you would click here: https://ko-fi.com/crunchandroll

06 Nov 2023 | S03 E01 - Andy Bush | 00:53:11
We're back with an absolute beaut of a guest: It's Andy Bush (or Andrew Buschenfeld if he's in trouble). We caught up with him just after his show one evening, shortly before he tucked into a supermarket chicken jalfrezi. Don't let anyone tell you radio isn't glamorous. He chatted to John about how he had always dreamed of being on the radio as a child; his delight after the Global had taken over GWR; and how he bloody LOVES radio conferences. * Oh, John also goes 'there' and asks the question we all wanted to know... Expect strong language, adult content and a sad story about a turkey.
* For the avoidance of doubt, the opposite of all these things is true.
