Send us a text

Author Colleen Thompson joins the show to discuss her newest book DANGER AT CLEARWATER CROSSING, as well as the creative process, what it takes to make it in publishing, and so much more.

From the historical novels that began her writing journey (written as Gwyneth Atlee and Colleen Easton) to the riveting romantic suspense that has become her trademark, Colleen Thompson writes stories that show us that sometimes, love can kill.

In 2004, Colleen Thompson’s first  romantic thriller, Fatal Error, launched Dorchester Publishing’s new line of fast-paced, steamy romantic suspense.  The book was nominated for the RITA Award for Best Romantic Suspense and won the Texas Gold for Best Mainstream Fiction.  Other honors received by her books include a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly, a Readers’ Choice Awards, nominations from the Reviewers International Organization, Top Pick, KISS awards, and a reviewers’ choice award nomination from Romantic Times Book Club Magazine, and a Perfect Ten from Romance Reviews Today.

Now residing in the Houston area with her husband, Colleen works with children in addition to her writing and speaking. When she’s not on deadline, she can often be found hiking with her family, playing with her pets, fiddling with her computer, or with her nose stuck in a good book.

The interview, originally conducted in October of 2021, is the most popular to date!

Ben Barnes is known to many for portraying fantasy heroes and comic-book villains, characters from history and classic novels and the occasional romantic street busker or wannabe rock-star. His own fantasies, stories and dreams have until now been eclipsed by these roles.

With Songs For You, Barnes is baring his soul through his music for the first time; hopeful, joyful, passionate, nostalgic, vulnerable and loving. The lyrics to most of the songs, he explains, came from “poetry written for a loved one or just for myself, a long-forgotten phrase I jotted down in a notebook years ago, inspired by a photograph, a moment, a quotation, or in the case of one song, a story I read about a female pirate!”

After years of being directed, written for and edited in movies, this is his moment to shine the light on the five songs on Songs For You, lovingly crafted at his piano at home and presented unedited and straight from the heart.

Barnes shared, “Songs For You comes from one of my favorite records, ‘A Song For You’ by Leon Russell (but the Donny Hathaway version, of course), from wanting the songs to speak intimately to anyone who listens to them, and because if a song is written for you, you know who you are.”

Ben Barnes has starred in films, TV shows and theater productions spanning the last 20 years:

16 May 2022From The Archives: Chris Spear, Chef and Podcaster00:40:58

Send us a text

Another fave episode originally airing in July of 2021. Chris continues to thrive in his business PERFECT LITTLE BITES, and his podcast, CHEFS WITHOUT RESTAURANTS. Check out the links for more!

Chef Chris Spear is on the show to talk about his amazing business, Perfect Little Bites, and his podcast, Chefs Without Restaurants.

Chris Spear is the chef and owner of Perfect Little Bites, an in-home personal chef business based in Frederick, Maryland. You might also know him as the host of the Chefs Without Restaurants podcast, and the man behind the culinary networking organization of the same name. Chris graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a B.S. in culinary arts, and has been working in the foodservice industry for almost 30 years.

Chris dreamed of bringing an upscale dining experience directly into peoples' homes, and he started his personal chef business on the side in 2010. Tired of the corporate foodservice grind, he left his job and took his business full-time in 2016. Specializing in contemporary American cuisine with global influences, Perfect Little Bites services the metro Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas, as well as parts of West Virginia, Southern Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia.

Wanting to build a community to help support other food entrepreneurs, Chris started the Chefs Without Restaurants community. Its focus would be on sharing gig opportunities and knowledge, as well as doing collaborative pop-up events. This led to the launch of the Chefs Without Restaurants podcast in late 2019, and the show features guests working in aspects of foodservice such as catering, research & development, contract foodservice, and the food truck industry.

Now Chris splits his time between cooking unique dishes for his guests, such as scrapple dip, and engaging with the culinary community he built. He has written editorials for StarChefs, and some of his recipes can be found on the Garden & Gun and Imbibe websites. You can also find an illustration of his chest tattoo in the book Knives & Ink, along with his recipe for smoked gouda and hot pepper pimento cheese.

Chris is also a husband, and father of twins. When he's not cooking or talking about food, you'll probably find him taking photos, wandering an art gallery, or rocking out at one of DC's concert venues. Ask to see his Star Wars collection, or to tell y

13 Jun 2022Emile Pandolfi, Pianist00:30:32

Send us a text

Today's show features pianist, Emile Pandolfi. He delighted me with stories from working at a comedy club in California, to dispensing wisdom from his lengthy career, to fave books, and more.
With more than half a billion streams across platforms including Pandora, Spotify, and Apple Music, Emile Pandolfi ranks among America’s most popular piano artists.

Although the majority of his performance repertoire is lush, intricate arrangements of Broadway and pop standards, his influences are, in fact, more classical than pop. It is this subjective layering of classical style, which Emile infuses into the broad palette of his performance selections, that continues to resonate with audiences everywhere.

His most recent project is the book Play It Like You Mean It: Supercharge Your Playing and Let Your Piano Work for You. A light-hearted and humorous guide for pianists from amateur to professional, Play It Like You Mean It shares Emile’s holistic philosophy harmonizing method and mindset to help pianists communicate through every chord and resonate more passionately with listeners, while bringing more joy to the daily practice of music. He also maintains an active global travel schedule, hosting a small group of fans on international luxury tours each year. Each trip includes intimate performances in concert halls and historic venues.

17 Dec 2022Glam Rock Band Royal Sugar dishes on everything from tour life to the philosophical00:25:22

Send us a text

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Tyler and Garrett from the band Royal Sugar. It was a delight to get to know this talented duo and chat about pretty much everything under the sun.

For more about Royal Sugar, click here!
Royal Sugar Insta: @royalsugarband
Royal Sugar FB: @royalsugarband

Bio: Meet the future of rock ’n’ roll: Nashville’s Royal Sugar.
The glam group is the most exciting new band to emerge on the scene, a mix of ‘70s and ‘80s nostalgia made fresh by their penchant for modern pop. In concert, they channel everything from Def Leppard’s rawness to Jim Morrison’s swaggering flamboyance.
Royal Sugar’s Tyler Cohenour (frontman) and Garrett Carr (bass/vocals) first met in college in Florida, the same state they both hail from. Growing up, both musicians had a penchant for the type of rock music their dads raised them on, like AC/DC. Upon meeting and becoming friends, they realized they may be musical soulmates.
“First couple times we played, we’re like ‘There’s chemistry there. We should run with this and see what happens,’” Carr recalls.
In 2021, Royal Sugar made their debut with a cover of Harry Styles’ “Medicine.” They attended the pop star’s show in Nashville back during one of his first solo tours and were blown away by the track, which the former One Direction member has played live frequently but never released officially. Royal Sugar had dropped a cover of “Medicine” on TikTok that blew up so they decided to record it.
But for their first original song, they led off with “California Nightmare” in July 2022. It’s a proper introduction to their shimmering fusion of the past and the present that positions them firmly in rock’s future. It was also the first song they were able to write in person when Cohenour returned to Nashville.
“Ty’s a super talented producer, so he’ll get in there and build out these tracks,” Carr says of his bandmate. “He’s got a really great ear for how melodies come together so he’ll usually get the structure and the bones and then we’ll go back and forth on arrangements. It’s definitely a collaboration, based off Ty’s vision for the initial concept.”

06 Feb 2023Heather Hutchison, Musician, & Author discusses finding solace and success in music, and advocating and breaking barriers as person who is blind.00:38:08

Send us a text

Heather Hutchison is the Amazon best-selling author of Holding On by Letting Go: A Memoir, and an award-winning singer/songwriter with four albums released to date.
old with both heart-wrenching honesty and sharp whit, Holding On by Letting Go chronicles Hutchison’s life as a blind person in Canada and Latin America, her hospitalization for psychiatric care in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the refuge she has always found in music. It is a gripping story of courage, resilience, hope, and surrendering for a second chance at life.

Hutchison’s music explores similar themes. Her album, If I Could, was written in part as a soundtrack to the book. Though both her music and her writing stand firmly on their own, Hutchison sings with the conviction of someone who has lived these stories, and her crystal clear voice commands attention from the very first note. On this album, Hutchison effortlessly crosses genres, from pop-punk to orchestral pop to stripped down solo piano. If I Could is a solid testament to the power of music to heal and transform. Blind since birth and having struggled with mental illness from a young age, Hutchison is passionate about educating people on disability and mental health through her music and writing. She is a frequent guest on national television and radio programs and renowned podcasts across the globe, speaking and singing to share her message of hope to those who are struggling. In her advocacy work, she has appeared alongside numerous high-profile psychologists, clinical counsellors and other mental health professionals. An avid traveler, Hutchison has spent time living and teaching English in Latin America. She lives on the west coast of Canada with her partner Jordan and their cat Maya. When she isn’t writing, playing music or traveling, she can usually be found at the beach, or curled up with a good book and a chai latte.

It was a pleasure to interview the last remaining members of the band, Savoy Brown, bassist Patrick DaSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm.

The History of Savoy Brown

Defining the British Blues Boom music scene in London in the mid ‘60’s

The British R ‘n‘ B boom of the early 1960’s led directly to the British Blues Explosion in 1968.

The London  R n B boom led by, for example, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Pretty Things and to some extent the Beatles quickly moved into mainstream pop and left a vacuum in the London clubs.

This vacuum, in London, was filled in the mid 60’s by John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers featuring Eric Clapton and Savoy Brown’s Blues Band featuring Kim Simmonds.

Both these bands became headliners at major London clubs such as The Marquee establishing a “blues night” amongst the mainstream soul and popular music in the charts at that time.

As headlining pioneers of the new blues movement Savoy Brown gave a platform to emerging bands in other areas of the U.K.  Ten Years After and Jethro Tull both were opening acts to Savoy Brown on blues night at the Marquee.

Chicken Shack from Birmingham also came to London and along with the early Fleetwood Mac established themselves on the scene.

John Mayall, Savoy Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Chicken Shack and Ten Years After became the “big six” blues bands at that time.

In fact a 45 single was released by The Liverpool Scene called “I’ve Got These Fleetwood Mac Chicken Shack John Mayall Can’t Fail Blues”  and the second chorus has Savoy Brown and Jethro Tull to round off the full song story.

Hits soon followed for these bands (Savoy Brown cracking the USA in 1969) and the blues movement quickly gave way to the heavy rock of Black Sabbath, themselves a blues band when they started.

The British Blues Boom was a phenomena never to be repeated again and remains one of the foremost U.K. music movements of all time.

09 Oct 2023Rodney O'Quinn, Bassist for Foghat discusses upcoming album, tour life, burnout, and more00:35:06

Send us a text

Rodney O'Quinn, Foghat's bassist since 2015 sits down to discuss their newest album SONIC MOJO, as well as reminiscing about tour life, the time he stepped away from music, and more.

Biography (from Foghat website)
At 5 years old, grabbing mom’s vacuum cleaner like a mic stand singing “Hound Dog” by Elvis, Rodney O’Quinn was smitten and bitten by the music bug at an early age. By the time he was 11, a request from a friend simply saying “We need a Bass Player. You should get one!” would lead him to the first of many stages he would perform on.

Straight out of High School, Rodney attained his higher education in Rock & Roll playing full time from 1984-1996 with various notable Bands out of the South East U.S. This included a 5-year stint with one of the South East’s top touring/grossing bands, ELI which generated 2 well received albums. Averaging 240 shows a year left Rodney feeling burned out and ready for a change. He was leaving life on the road behind (or so he thought).

In 2007 (Rodney describes it as an “itch that needed to be scratched”) music beckoned once again and he was compelled to answer. Rodney joined Pat Travers Band for what he thought would be a year or two on the road. Over the next eight and half years with the Pat Travers Band, Rodney played over 500 shows across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, U.K., Europe and Sweden and recorded 2 studio CD’s and 2 Live CD/DVD’s with the band. They also performed Live on the syndicated show RockLine Radio 3 times as well as a concert, “Live from Moondance Jam” which aired over 100 times on Direct TV.

More than just a beast on the bass and a pretty face, Rodney used his business savvy background to handle many facets of the PTB organization. In 2010, he co-produced a run of shows that featured Pat Travers, Derek St Holmes, Mark Farner and Ronnie Montrose called Guitar Gods of the 70’s. Along with other members of Pat’s band, Rodney would play bass behind all of these Artists.

During these extensive tours, as fate would have it, Rodney crossed paths many times with his friend and fellow bass player, Craig MacGregor of Foghat. After watching Rodney play, Craig Macgregor admired Rodney’s talent and when the time was right, was called upon in 2015 to fill in for “Mac” and has since become a permanent part of the Foghat Family. Two years, 2 Foghat CD releases and 140+ sh

04 Dec 2023Buddy Whittington, Guitarist with Texas Scratch discusses long-awaited new album, life lessons, inspirations, and more00:27:28

Send us a text

Texas Scratch is made up of three born-and-bred Texas guitarists – Jim Suhler from Dallas, Buddy Whittington from Fort Worth and Vince Converse from Houston.  This mighty threesome of big dog guitar slingers takes no prisoners when it comes to red-hot guitar performances, both live and in-studio.

This trio of six-string guitar beasts are accompanied on the album by drummer Jeff Simon and bassist Nathaniel Peterson, both fine musicians in their own right.

The band’s name derives from the term Texas scratch, which is a style of guitar picking (also known as the Carter Scratch) said to have originated by Mother Maybelle Carter back in 1927.

Their combined efforts have resulted in a debut album consisting of – obviously -  fiery, passionate guitar licks everywhere you turn, soaked in the blues and kicked in the ass by the blues-rock they all love to play.

18 Dec 2023Chris James of The Burrito Brothers talks about their new album (hint, it's holiday themed!), the band's legacy, and more.00:57:25

Send us a text

The band was formed in 1968 in Los Angeles as The Flying Burrito Brothers.  Its classic lineup featured country rock pioneer, the late Gram Parsons, and former founding Byrds members bassist Chris Hillman and drummer Michael Clarke, along with eventual original Eagles member Bernie Leadon on lead guitar and pedal steel guitar genius Sneaky Pete Kleinow.

The band’s first two albums, The Gilded Palace of Sin (which Rolling Stone listed at number 192 on its list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time) and Burrito Deluxe, remain highly influential, acclaimed works which helped put country-rock on the map.

Because Parsons and Keith Richards were good friends, Burrito Deluxe contains the first issued version of the Mick Jagger/Keith Richards-written song "Wild Horses," released almost a year before the The Rolling Stones own take on it appeared on Sticky Fingers.

The band has churned through countless members over the years (including many ex-members who have attained success over the years on their own in big-name bands) but has continued to keep the Burritos name and legacy alive by touring and recording under various Burritos-styled names over the decades.

These days, the band, now based in Nashville, features Chris P. James (who’s been involved with the band since 2009), guitarist Steve Allen, Tony Paoletta on pedal steel and drummer Peter Young…all extremely talented musicians who love being involved with the band’s legacy and creating new music to keep that legacy alive.

The current lineup has continued for over a decade to carry the Burrito Brothers torch via the Christmas release, which features the band’s trademark tight ensemble playing, beautiful harmonies, excellent songwriting, and the ability to turn other artist’s songs into their own.

Bio (from website)
Based in Los Angeles, Richard T Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of noted solo albums and collaborations with a dizzying list of revered artists. In 1978, he signed with RCA Records and released his debut album, Red, Hot, and Blue, produced by Jack Richardson (Bob Seger, The Guess Who). The album featured a notable group, Les Dudek, Billy Squier, Paul Shaffer, and the Becker Brothers. The album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to number four on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. A second album titled Bear includes a rendition of the Rolling Stones’ classic “Ruby Tuesday,” followed by The Best of Richard T Bear and Captured Alive, a concert recorded in Hamburg, Germany. In 1984, he moved to Teldec Records, which led to the release of The Bear Truth, and the Giorgio Moroder produced album The Runner.

He has appeared on numerous recordings including Crosby, Stills and Nash’s “Southern Cross,” The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss’ solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau’s hit single “My Angel Baby,” Billy Squier’s solo debut Tale of the Tape, and former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli. He would also pen the song “Love and Pain,” one of the standout tracks on Cher’s blockbuster album Take Me Home. He has shared the stage with artists such as Richie Havens, Odetta, The Doobie Brothers, and Jeff Beck, to name a few.

Domestic responsibilities and a struggle to regain his sobriety forced him to put his musical career on hold. In 1983, T Bear gained his sobriety and focused on helping others with addiction, and became instrumental in developing the Musicians Picnic, serving on its board of directors. The annual event led to the creation of the Musicians Assistance Program (MAP), a non-profit organization that is now part of the Recording Academy’s MusiCares Foundation.

After a lengthy hiatus, T Bear returned to the music scene in 2020 and released the single “One Day at a Time” on Quarto Valley Record

14 Oct 2024Chris Slade, legendary rock drummer recounts career highlights, and new projects00:36:14

Send us a text

Chris Slade’s music career reads like a Who’s Who list of rock ‘n’ roll.  It’s truly amazing how many iconic bands and artists he has performed with over the decades.

His musical journey can be traced back to 1963.  Chris came from the same village in Wales as fellow Welshman Tom Jones and, as a 17-year-old lad, was hired by Jones to play drums in the singer’s backing band, The Squires, for seven years. It was the beginning of an incredible career that is still going strong today.

He was the founding member of Mandred Man, and his illustrious resume includes working with Asia, AC/DC, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, and many others.

In 2012, Slade launched the band, The Chris Slade Timeline, to mark, at that time, 50 years as a professional rock drummer. The band performs music from all aspects of his lengthy career and has appeared at major festivals including Hellfest, 24 Hours of Le Mans, Harley Davidson Aquitaine, and Saint Tropez and is the only rock band to play the Moscow Olympic Stadium for the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament.

The current lineup of The Chris Slade Timeline features Paul “Bun” Davis on lead vocals, bassist Stevie Gee, guitarist James Cornford, Mike Clarke on keys and guitar and, of course the inimitable Mr. Slade on drums.  This core lineup recorded Timescape and continues to tour.

28 Oct 2024Ginny Luke, Electric Violinist discusses her debut album, empowerment, songwriting, and more00:23:32

Send us a text

Electric Violinist GINNY LUKE’s highly anticipated and long-awaited debut solo vocal album, Devil at My Heels, is due out November 1 on KZZ Music/Blue Élan Records. The album combines melody, muscle, and message into an irresistible and immaculately executed 12 tracks bristling with anthemic hooks, soaring singing, and Luke’s signature approach to violin as a scintillating rock instrument. It’s boldly evidenced in the title track featuring Orianthi, which was released earlier this year as the first single and video which has already racked up over 34,000 views and can be seen on Luke’s official YouTube page.

The album’s second single, “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” was recently released on all digital outlets, including her official YouTube page. “It’s badass melodic rock with scorching violin,” LUKE enthused. “And a declaration of my autonomy and the journey of understanding my human experience.”
