20 Mar 2023 | S1 Ep3: Finding Your Writing Tribe: Building a Support Network that Works for You | 00:08:50
A writing support network is something that, in my opinion, every writer needs. After all, writing is a lonely process, and when you’ve only got yourself to talk to about it, things can get just a little overwhelming.
Now you may not have explored the idea of a writing support network before - who you need on your journey and why. But it can make a huge difference to your motivation levels and success. So in this episode, I’ll share who you should welcome on board your writing bus and why they need a seat. You’ll learn:
I hope you enjoy this episode and that it encourages you to think about your own support network. As I say in the episode, you don’t have to have a huge team; you just need a few of the right people around you to support and guide you as you embark on your writing journey.

Understanding our writer’s voice in non-fiction can feel tricky. We want to sound as though we know what we’re talking about, but with that comes the risk of sounding a little dull or dry.
After all, when reading your favourite business or non-fiction books, one of the things that keep you turning the pages is the author’s voice, right? So when writing your book, you’ll want to be sure you’re sharing your unique writing voice too. But how do you do it? How can you sound like…well…yourself? Throughout this episode, I’ll share seven simple ways to discover your writing voice, so you feel confident your readers will keep turning the pages of your book. You’ll learn:

16 Apr 2023 | S1 Ep7: Why Knowing Your Niche Matters: The Key to Writing a Bestselling Non-Fiction Book | 00:11:55
Writing a book is tough. It requires you to dig deep and draw on all your resources. But it also requires you to really know who you’re writing for.
Yes, you may well have a niche that you work in on a daily basis, but the niche your book sits in might be slightly different. If you really want to be seen as an expert, getting this bit right is vital. In this episode, we’ll explore how you can be certain about the niche you’re writing in and why it’s such a benefit to have clarity before you write a single word. You’ll learn:
It’s often very tempting to cram as much information as possible into the non-fiction book you want to write. After all, you have a wide variety of expertise, so now is the perfect time to showcase them, right? Well, I hope by listening to this episode, you’ll discover just how important it is to get crystal clear on your niche and the importance of specificity, so you can avoid the one thing all authors dread - a book that never gets finished. I hope you enjoy listening!

As a non-fiction author, you have a range of publishing options to choose from - but which one is right for you? It can feel overwhelming to even know where to start.
Will you choose self-publishing or traditional publishing? What about hybrid? What the heck is hybrid publishing anyway? We’ll cover all that in this episode…and more. You’ll learn:
Your publishing journey is your publishing journey. It might not be what other people you know have done, but that’s okay. To make the journey as rewarding - and enjoyable - as possible, doing what feels right for your book (and you) is key.
And that all starts with knowing your options. Hope you enjoy listening! Further resources:

Do you find yourself comparing yourself to other writers? Perhaps wishing that you had the success/ability/popularity they have? It’s very common when doing anything creative to look at what others do and berate ourselves for not doing things ‘as well as they do.’

In this episode, we look at what you can do if you’ve lost the motivation to write. It happens to all of us - from independent writers like me to the big guns who line the shelves in your local bookshop.
You see, writing when you’ve lost motivation is a bit like cleaning the oven. Something you keep putting off because you know it’s going to be hard work and, frankly, sitting down with a cuppa, a Custard Cream and your favourite book or Netflix show is far more appealing. But it’s actually perfectly natural to lose motivation - and something all writers struggle with from time to time, despite what they’d have you believe. So if you’ve lost your writing mojo, don’t worry; this episode will help. You’ll learn:
So, if you’re in a motivational slump and have lost the love of writing, you’ll find plenty of ideas to help you get back into writing mode. Hope you enjoy listening! Further resources:

28 May 2023 | S1 Ep13: The Write Balance: Avoiding the Goldilocks Trap With Your Writing Environment | 00:17:04
Are you determined to get everything ‘just right’ when it comes to your writing environment? Want to make sure it will help rather than hinder your process?
In this episode, I’m here to help you create your perfect writing environment - something that doesn’t have to be difficult. In fact, the simpler you can make it, the better. Often, when you procrastinate over having the right pen, notebook, or chair, you’re dangerously close to becoming Goldilocks. But this is often procrastination in disguise. Writing a book is hard work, so this is no surprise - but like any new habit, the best time to start writing is now, not when the muse takes you or the wind is blowing in the right direction. Or when that new Moleskine notebook shows up… (I feel seen…) During this episode, you’ll learn:
Hope you enjoy listening!

11 Jun 2023 | S1 Ep15: Embracing the Journey: Growth Mindset Principles for Writers | 00:15:01
How would you describe your writing mindset? Are you someone who believes that your ability to write is fixed? That you’ll only ever be able to write at a certain level or with a certain amount of skill?
Or are you someone who adopts a growth mindset? Believing that abilities aren’t fixed and that finding things hard is an opportunity for improvement? In this week’s episode, you’ll discover why developing a growth mindset really is the key to writing success and, most importantly, enjoyment. You’ll learn:
And so much more!
You will occasionally fail with your writing, and when that happens, a fixed mindset will rear its ugly head, but that’s okay. It happens to everyone. 18 Jun 2023 | S1 Ep16: Empathy in Ink: Understanding Your Reader's Journey When Writing Non-Fiction | 00:17:03
Writing a book without really knowing your reader’s journey is a bit of an insult to them - and can be THE thing that means they finish your book and love it… or they don’t.
When you’re writing, sometimes you’re so wrapped up in what YOU want to write about you almost forget the reader exists. Now I’m pretty confident you’re not like that. But it’s easy to slip into writing a book without considering exactly how you're going to take the reader on a journey of transformation and change. You’re brimming with ideas and knowledge; you just want to get it down on the page. And I get that. I really do. But before you write, you have to get a clear idea of your reader and their journey. Not only does it make the book far more helpful for them to read, but it also makes it a lot easier for you to write too. In this episode, you’ll learn:
And so much more!
Your reader MUST be at the heart of your book - it makes all the difference between a book that someone reads once and never opens again - and one that changes their life. So let’s get to know them and help them in the best way possible. I hope you enjoy listening! Further resources:

Outlining really is the best way to plan and structure your book - it stops you from facing the blank page each time you write, and it also means you get your message across in the right way for your reader.

Knowing how much of your personal story to use in your business book or self-help book is a tricky one. You’re not writing a memoir, after all. But if you don’t include it, your book can lose that connection to the reader.
So what’s the answer? Luckily for you, this week’s episode is going to cover all that and more.

22 Oct 2023 | S2 Ep27: Your Writing Potential with Anna Zannides | 00:38:59
I'm thrilled to welcome Anna Zannides onto the podcast for my very first author interview - and what a conversation we had!
Anna is a published author, a UK-listed Mindfulness Teacher, and an accredited Life Coach with a background in education. She specialises in working with young people and individuals facing the challenges of cancer, loss and bereavement. Her book ‘How Did I Get Here?’ was published in August 2023 and delves into the story of her courageous journey to reclaim her identity, while also serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for those facing their own life challenges or questioning the path they're on. During our wonderful conversation, we chat about: - Anna’s somewhat unplanned journey to being an author and her reasons for writing this particular book. - Why so many of us stop believing in ourselves and in our potential. - Her writing process - which included getting up at 4am - and how her regular practice of solitude helped her creativity. - The challenges she faced being bi-lingual and how she feels it’s actually made the book more accessible to others. This really is a brilliant conversation that will have you thinking about the way you view yourself as an author, how self-belief really can make all the difference and why it’s so important to see ourselves for who we really are. I’m so happy Anna’s was able to share her experience of writing and publishing - and I know her story will really resonate with you, wherever you are at on your own writing journey. 06 Nov 2023 | S2 Ep29: Email Marketing for Authors - Making It Work For You | 00:17:15
Email marketing is one of - if not the - most important parts of your writer brand. To effectively sell books over the long term, you can’t just rely on social media. Building a list of fans and readers away from these popular platforms is necessary if you want long-term success.
But what should your author newsletter cover? What should it be about? How often should you send emails to your list? You’re about to find out in this episode. As you listen, you’ll learn:
And so much more! As writers, we must embrace email marketing to build a community that actively looks forward to our books and keeps them engaged with our work. It can feel overwhelming to know where to start or how to include book-related news into your existing newsletter. By the end of the episode, you’ll have ideas on how to build an email newsletter that works for you and your audience. I hope you enjoy listening! Further resources:

And so much more! Feedback is an integral part of writing. Without it, we can’t move forward and make our work better. 05 Feb 2024 | S2 Ep40: The Future is Female: Own Your Niche and Write Your Book | 00:30:10
The stats speak for themselves. When it comes to published non-fiction, female writers are still at a disadvantage. Only 35% of non-fiction prizes are awarded to female writers. Just 26.5% of non-fiction book reviews go to women. Advances tend to be lower, and we’re often left off end-of-year ‘bestseller lists’.
Research shows that we’re often told to ‘leave the big subjects to the men’, too! However, the tide is slowly turning. Deep in the bowels of the publishing world, change is afoot. Women are no longer accepting this as the way things are. Bold new thought leaders are emerging. But there’s still a long journey ahead. And I’m determined to be part of it. It’s why I’ve dedicated this episode to reminding you of the true benefits of writing that book you’ve been thinking about and how it can change your life - and your business - in ways you can’t even imagine. And lots more! When your audience sees you confidently stepping into the space that only you can occupy, big things start to happen. 26 May 2024 | S2 Ep56: The Author Label: When to Own It and Why | 00:17:57
Something I’m asked in almost every interview I do or when I’m working with authors is: When is the right time to call yourself an author? It’s a tricky one because a lot of it comes down to our own confidence levels - and that sneaky imposter syndrome we can all feel from time to time.

How often do you use storytelling in your business? Perhaps often. But how often do you share your story, and how does it make you feel when you do? For many small business owners, it makes us feel vulnerable, and we lose confidence in using our voices in the way that feels right for us.
Luckily, this month’s guest author is here to help us. Hilary Salzman is a business storyteller, writer, podcast host, and speaker dedicated to helping female business owners who struggle to use their voices and tell their stories confidently. Her debut nonfiction book, ‘The Roar of Her Story—How To Tell Everyday Stories to Attract Your Dream Clients and Build a Business That’s Unapologetically You,’ reflects a much-needed shift from #girlboss culture towards a more authentic, fulfilling approach to business. It encourages women to set their own personal benchmarks for success, empowers them to make meaningful life changes and provides practical advice on building a brand story that reflects their true selves. During our fantastic conversation, we talk about:
And so much more! This is a brilliant conversation - one of my all-time favourites, actually - and so I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I loved having it. Connect with Hilary and her book: Further resources from me
