17 Mar 2020 | 80 - Fur Market Update...Kinda | 00:27:10
In this episode I review some of the recent state fur auctions and discuss how the dreaded Coronavirus is or may affect the market, its having global impacts that will likely go on for several months it looks like. Overall the fur market looks about the same as it has the last few years. I touch on several somewhat southern sales and the coyote prices compared to what we hear about the high coyote prices. In general though, I’m not worried about what the market is doing, I’m a trapper and I’m going to keep on trapping as long as I can. If you’re interested in a beavertail wallet or have some southern mink please email me at kris@coyotetrappingschool.com Also, be sure to support our sponsors, Kaatz Brothers Lures, www.kaatzbros.com
09 Oct 2019 | 61 - 2019/2020 Fur Market Outlook | 00:24:47
In this episode I go through an email from John Zander, Zander Fur, discussing his outlook on the fur market for the upcoming season. Overall there doesn't look to be alot of changes. Looks like coyotes will still be hot, and some of the glut of ranch fur that has been on the market has been worked through, so maybe we are on the verge of the market rebounding somewhat. Only time will tell! I can assure you that regardless of what the market is doing, I will still be stringing steel and catching critters!
19 Oct 2020 | 105 - Trapping Harvest and Historical Data | 00:54:32
In this week’s episode I dig into some trapper survey data and find some historical data of trapper harvest from several different states, some dating back to the 1930s. It is very interesting data and highlights how important it is for trappers to accurately respond to those surveys. Our game agencies rely on us for good data, and if we don’t provide it to them then they don’t have good data to manage the resource with. 01 Jun 2020 | 89 - NWCOA Wildlife Control Operator Training | 00:25:43
In this episode I review the recent NWCOA training I took. Their Wildlife Control Operator course is a basic course that covers a wide range of topics geared toward new Wildlife Control Operators (WCOs). If you are new to, or thinking about starting as a WCO I highly recommend this course. The best part was this session was taught online, so travel wasn't involved. It is a full 2 day course covering techniques and equipment, safety, and the most common wildlife issues that people tend to have. To learn more visit www.nwcoa.com

18 Dec 2019 | 70 – Moving traps and legislation | 00:36:59
In this episode I touch on a couple of legislation items that have come up recently, a potential trap ban in Kentucky, as well as some anti-gun legislation in my home state of Georgia. The National Trappers Association alerted my to the Kentucky legislation The Sportsmen’s Alliance the Georgia gun bill. Odds are these bills won’t get much traction, but the fact remains, the anti’s are still active and looking for any opportunity to capitalize where they can. That is why we need to support these organizations and contact our legislators to let them know where we stand when issues like this arise. I also mention an article written by Christy Plott, https://shoptalk-magazine.com/, discussing the harms of banning exotic leather, which has plenty of similarities to fur. I finally get into the meat of a few questions I’ve fielded lately concerning when to move traps, of course that all depends on your objectives and what species you are targeting. But there are some general guidelines that can help you get started. One of my final thoughts, I’ve been thinking of doing a fiction series, sort of an adventure trapping story. I guess I’m missing the writing I used to do. If that is something you would be interested in listening to please let me know! 12 Apr 2019 | Nuisance Trapping Part 2 - Episode 37 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:34:26
This is the 2nd episode that I talk about nuisance trapping and how it pertains to fur trappers. In this episode I dive deep into getting pricing and how to figure out how much to charge. And we talk a little about marketing at the end too. These 2 episodes should give you a starting point if doing nuisance trapping is something that interests you.
24 Feb 2020 | 78 - Get Your Mind Right | 00:27:44
In this episode I discuss some of my recent thinking, in line with Clint Locklear’s Mindset of a Professional book. While I’m working on growing a nuisance trapping business and trying to get my coyote catch numbers up, it really has hit home that you’ve got to have a different mindset than just hobby trapping. For one, as a nuisance trapper you’ve got to look and act like a professional. Pros aren’t forgetting items and cobbling things together on the fly. They have an efficient system and all their tools and equipment lined out and in order. Maybe next season I can show some success with this mindset, we’ll see! 28 May 2020 | 88 - Daniel Dekeyzer Interview | 01:12:40
In this episode I talk with Daniel Dekeyzer, a Georgia trapper who also runs a successful nuisance trapping business on the side. We talk about how he got started, where he gets business from, and in general how he runs his jobs. Gives a little more insight into how different trappers run their businesses. 19 Jun 2020 | 91 - Sales in Your WCO Business | 00:57:42
In this episode I discuss some of the aspects of sales and selling in a wildlife control business. I explain how I’ve encountered and experienced that it is really more of a wildlife exclusion business, from a cash flow and efficiency standpoint. And several different approaches when selling to a customer. Ultimately it boils down to how well you sell yourself. The customer is buying you and how you present your proposal, if they “buy” that you know what you are talking about and can really fix their problem. As with most jobs, there is much more an aspect of managing relationships and people than trapping animals and doing what you want to do! 30 Oct 2019 | 64 – Black Coyotes and Coydogs | 00:40:33
In this episode I dive into some research papers on genetics of coyotes, wolves, and dogs, looking to answer the question that comes up at least once a year about coydogs. In doing so I also run across an interesting paper that may explain what causes the melanistic, or black coyote. Black coyotes are not common, but they aren’t necessarily uncommon either. Trappers catch them on occasion and hunters usually have pictures of black coyotes on their trail cameras. See the links to articles below. In this episode I talk with Australian trapper Chris Booby, who operates CGB Vertebrate Pest Management, as well as It's a Dogger's Life YouTube and website. We talk about the similarities and differences in trapping thousands of miles apart, for a different but similar species, and the Australian aspect of invasive species management versus the US aspect of fur trapping. This was a really interesting interview and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
01 Jun 2019 | Preseason Trap Prep - Episode 44 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:24:57
In this episode I talk through what I look for as I am getting my traps ready to be dyed and put up for the coming season. They are pretty straightforward and simple, stake, tag, proper operation, on conibears the trigger. I also started checking pan tension last year. These are simple things but can make a difference when you are out on the line!
10 Feb 2020 | 76 - Coyote/Predator Trap Selection | 00:34:41
In looking through my analytics for the website and podcast I noticed that one of the most searched topics has been choosing the best coyote trap. In this podcast I discuss some of the different options and how one might go about picking the best trap. There are multiple good options out there, but in my opinion there are a few things that a new trapper can look for that might help their overall catch, especially early on. One of the most notable things in my opinion is a night latch, which can be invaluable for getting that pan set just right. Of course, your local law may dictate how much trap you can use and that should always be referenced, here is a link to a page on my website. Simply click your state on the map and it will take you to your state’s trapping regulations - https://www.coyotetrappingschool.com/resources/
03 May 2020 | 86 - The Cost of Predator Control | 00:42:10
In this episode I review an article from the Wildlife Trends Journal, https://www.wildlifetrends.com/. A friend of mine actually sent me the article because of the cover picture, which was a photo of me when I worked for the USDA doing some predator trapping. This was a very informative article delving into alot of specifics around large scale quail plantations and how they handle and pay for predator control programs. This gives some good pricing insight which was a main reason why I wanted to cover this article. 03 Aug 2019 | 52 - "Eastern Wolfer" Book Review | 00:52:57
In this episode I review Clint Locklear's "Eastern Wolfer" book. The short story is, if you trap in the East and want to improve your coyote trapping game, this book is worth the money for sure. There are some views that are totally different from the standard eastern trapping perspective that we've heard for so long. I am very excited to put the tactics from this book into practice this coming season, I've got high hopes for my catches this year!
23 Nov 2019 | 67 – Trapline Location and Strategy | 00:31:50
In this episode I give some of my thoughts on trap location, things to look for and key in on, specifically for coyotes and foxes. Intersections are a major area of interest. Also large landscape features like rivers, powerlines, interstates, these can all help direct animals and affect their travel patterns. I also discuss some of my thoughts on strategy and how you may be able to increase your catch by ensuring you are targeting different family groups and looking for key dispersal routes. I recorded this on the road so hopefully there isn’t too much background noise. As always, to learn more about coyote trapping be sure to visit https://www.coyotetrappingschool.com
30 Jan 2019 | Trapline Ramblings - Ep 27 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:55:06

20 Jan 2020 | 74 - Pan Covers and Open Minds | 00:33:57
In this episode a post about pan covers sparks a discussion on how I think about things and how thinking from a different perspective can be beneficial. Also looking at the source of information and determining how credible or useful it might be. Specifically I’m talking about steel screen pan covers. Everyone has their own opinion and they vary widely, but I’m giving them a try, not necessarily because I’m not satisfied with the polyfil pan covers I’ve been using, but the potential additional benefits the steel screen could provide. Its going to take some time and experience to determine if there is a legitimate benefit but that is what trapping, and life, for that matter is all about. If you’re curious about something, don’t just take someone elses word for it, try it for yourself and see. That’s the only way you can be really sure. To me the potential additional benefits to steel screen aside from just acting as a pan cover is 1- increased kill area inside the jaws of the trap and 2- increase trap operability in wet weather situations. Both of these are yet to be determined but I’m anxious to try and see if either of these turns out to work as others say they do. These heavy black steel screen pan covers can be order through O’Gorman Enterprises or Keg Creek Bait and Lure - http://stores.kegcreekbaits-lures.com/products.php?product=Heavy-Steel-Black-Coated-Screen
10 Aug 2020 | 97 - Linda White Interview | 01:00:00

24 Jun 2019 | "Hoofbeats of a Wolfer" Book Review | 00:47:35
In this episode I review the Craig O'Gorman book "Hoofbeats of a Wolfer." This book is pretty well known among trappers, but it isn't the easiest book to get. You have to order it direct from O'Gorman Enterprises, but if you are a serious coyote trapper, this book is worth the hassle. There is a ton of great information from O'Gorman, a professional coyote trapper whose livelihood has been made from trapping coyotes for over 40 years. You will definitely take some things away from this book that will help on your trapline and make you a better trapper.
01 Nov 2018 | Nontarget Catches - Episode 14 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:27:52
If you trap long enough you will encounter nontarget catches, whether they are other furbearers or another species. It helps to have a plan ahead of time as to how you will deal with them and be prepared when the time comes. Also knowing how you can set your traps to avoid certain nontarget catches is a good way to avoid having to deal with the issue.

13 Dec 2018 | Starting a Trapping Channel - Episode 20 - CTS Podcast | 00:35:06
I get questions from time to time about starting a trapping channel on youtube or how to grow or get more subscribers. In this episode I talk about some of the potential options for starting and growing a channel, as well as some of the watchouts. It isn't something that is easy, it takes patience and persistence. Consistently producing quality content is the only way to grow, so be prepared for plenty of work. But it is incredibly fun and rewarding.
23 Jan 2019 | Jeff Traynor - Furbearer Conservation - Ep 26 - CTS Podcast | 01:03:37
In this episode I talk with Jeff Traynor from Furbearer Conservation. His website and focus is on supporting trapping through data and facts. We have a really interesting discussion and this is definitely something that we as trappers need to pay more attention and utilize more readily. Trapping truly is conservation and is used to manage invasive species as well as protect threatened and endangered species. And there is evidence of this across the US.
05 Dec 2018 | Filming on the Trapline - Episode 19 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:43:43

I've picked up a few things here and there and this video is to give you and idea, if you're interested in filming your trapline adventures what you may want to look at in ways of video gear.
07 Mar 2019 | February 2019 NAFA Sale and Fur Prices | 00:41:22
In this episode I discuss the results of the latest North American Fur Auctions fur sale, including how my fur from last season have sold since the July 2018 sale. I also talk about some of the state association auctions in the southeast, which had pretty decent results compared to how I fared at NAFA. Of course auction results will vary from year to year and auction to auction, nevertheless, this is a down year for everything except coyotes and cats.
02 Jul 2019 | Otter Trapping Episode 48 | 00:45:53
In this episode we talk otters and otter trapping. I guess you could say that I am a generalist when it comes to trapping, I like to target anything that is on the property that I am trapping, so when I'm water trapping if otters are present I am setting for them. To me they are like the coyote of the water, they are fairly easy to catch but sometimes it is a waiting game for them to come back through the area. When they do though and end up in your trap, man it is exciting! I hope this episode helps you put some otters on the board this coming season.
31 Mar 2020 | 81 - So You Want To Be A Nuisance Trapper - Part 1 | 00:42:35

13 Nov 2019 | 66 – Guy Groenewold – Groenewold Fur and Wool | 00:43:46
In this episode I talk with Guy Groenewold of Groenewold Fur and Wool. They are fur buyers that are expanding their purchasing area as a result of NAFA shutting down. I reached out to Guy before the NAFA announcement because they’ve been buying fur in the south for several years now and will actually buy some furs green, particularly beavers, which is quite a big interest area as beavers are especially time consuming to put up. As a fur buyer, one major upside to dealing with GF&W is that when they take your fur, they pay you, so there is no waiting for a check and wondering when you will get paid. Be sure to check their website and see if they will be coming through your area, if so it may be worth taking some of your catch this season and seeing what they will pay you for it. 20 Dec 2018 | Beaver Trapping - Ep 21 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:47:20
In this podcast I give an overview of the different ways to target beavers. Beavers are fun to trap and relatively easy to catch, but they can pose a challenge and get trap shy. There are a variety of methods for targeting beavers and with the possibility of pickup up the occasional otter I find it hard to pass on an opportunity to trap beavers.
14 Feb 2019 | Coyote Home Range Data - Ep 29 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:46:51
In this episode I look at data from research projects across the southeast that analysed coyote home range patterns. The average home range of coyotes can vary widely but generally hangs around 5,000 acres. That is a pretty good chunk of land to cover.

11 Sep 2020 | 101 - Glands with Kyle Kaatz | 00:57:06
This is an interview with Kyle Kaatz about gland removal. Depending on the species the value of glands can really add up and by adding an extra couple minutes we can increase the yield from the trapline. To see the latest prices Kaatz Bros is paying for glands visit https://www.kaatzbros.com/reports/glands-essence-castor-and-carcasses-wanted/ We also talk about a couple of their DVDs that show the specific glands and how to remove them, Glands a Trappers Commodity, and Skunks the Best Investment You’ll Ever Make. Kaatz Bros also has a couple of DVDs on lure and bait making if you’re interested in saving glands for your own use, In the Lure Room, and Cracking the Code. 08 Feb 2019 | Trap Selection - Ep 28 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:33:06
I get criticized and sometimes people feel they need to defend their use of cheap traps. I've upgraded my traps since I started trapping, targeting top quality high performing traps, that do cost more than other traps. But there are reasons that I like these traps, and most trappers as they gain experience realize the benefits of these traps. But that doesn't mean you need those traps to get started now. Better to start with cheap traps that you buy rather than daydream about trapping with the expensive traps.
30 Oct 2020 | 107 - Meat Trapping | 00:26:08
In this episode I talk about eating furbearer meat. If you’re a trapper or hunter, odds are that you’ve at least considered eating various wild game. I think eating some of the meat we catch is a great opportunity to introduce others to wild game as well as give us some additional arguments to those who don’t approve of trapping. The fact is, when handled properly it is quality tablefare, and a great talking point! 08 Apr 2019 | Nuisance Trapping - Part 1 | 00:31:12
Once you get started trapping it is only a matter of time until someone wants to pay you to remove some of their critters. This can be a great way to earn a little side money or even potentially work into a career change, but there are some things to consider and take care of before hand. Hopefully over these next 2 episodes I can help at least point you in the right direction if this is something you have been considering.
07 Aug 2019 | 53 - Jeff Hagerty - HAGz Brackets | 01:24:56
In this episode I interview Jeff Hagerty, creator of the HAGz Brackets. We discuss his growing line of brackets, then dive off into other trapping topics. We discuss some of the options for running a northern trapline, and some specific coyote tactics, including one of Jeff's favorite coyote sets. Jeff is a great guy and this interview was a lot of fun. You'll definitely pick up something to put to use on your trapline this season.

There are a lot more benefits to trapping than a fur check, which is a good thing in times like these when fur checks are slim to non existant! There are plenty of things that trapping teaches you, and the network and connections you make as a trapper can unlock opportunities that you may have never otherwise been able to take advantage of. As we approach trapping season, I hope there are plenty of us out there chasing fur, regardless of whether it has a high value or not. It's good for the trapper and good for the environment. That's a good combination in my book. 06 Dec 2019 | 68 – Texas Trapline Summary | 00:53:21
In this episode I discuss my recent trapping trip to west Texas. Man what an awesome experience just to get to travel to a different place and try your hand at catching critters in a new landscape, as well as the possibility of catching new critters you’ve never trapped! I’d hoped to trap a mountain lion, unfortunately despite a good bit of sign, we never connected on one. O well, there’s always next year right. Regardless, I learned a bunch, had a great time, and experienced some awesome country. One thing I’ve discovered, if you stick with it, you never know where trapping might take you! 20 Apr 2019 | Trapline Safety - Episode 38 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:39:02
The trapline can take us to some remote places, often alone, in harsh conditions. Many of us run farm country traplines where we are rarely out of sight of a house and never lose cell service. Either way there are multiple hazards that can arise and being prepared can help to ensure you do not get stuck in a bad position and ensure you come home safely, all in one piece.

In this episode I have a deep discussion with Kyle Waltz of Conserv Wildlife Services. 21 Mar 2019 | Anti Activity - Episode 34 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:23:18
The anti hunting and trapping groups have been hard at work pushing legislation to restrict hunting and trapping. This seems the most active things have been in several years all at once and we must pay attention to what is going on if we hope to keep our ability to hunt and trap.
17 Jun 2019 | Alabama Trapper Steve Wright - Episode 46 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:49:28
In this episode I interview Alabama trapper Steve Wright. I noticed him on Instagram, by the many coyote catch pictures he posts, and thought he could provide some valuable insight into his trapping strategy. He didn't disappoint, this interview has some good tactics that I know I will be integrating into my trapline this coming season. Hope you enjoy!
18 Jul 2019 | Ep 50 - NTA Convention - Springfield Missouri | 00:41:40
This year I took the time to drive to Springfield Missouri and attend the National Trappers Association Convention, and let me tell you it was well worth the drive! There were a ton of vendors, great demonstrations by top trappers in the industry, and plenty of folks to talk trapping with. If you ever get the opportunity to attend one of the national conventions I would encourage you to do it, and I've heard the ones farther north are even better!

11 Mar 2020 | 79 - 2019/2020 Trapping Season Review | 00:41:44
In this episode I look back over this past trapping season, they seem to take forever to get here yet pass by so quickly. Overall I didn’t hit this season quite as hard as past seasons, but I had a few things going on too. I did make a trapping trip to west Texas, which was a blast. And for the home trapline I made great use of the Onx Hunt app, https://www.onxmaps.com/. I also changed up a few of my trapline methods after reading and watching some of Clint Locklear’s videos, here’s a link to a really good deal on a bundle pack, https://wolfernation.com/pcgstore2/index.php?route=product/product&path=64&product_id=97. As always be sure to stock up on your bait, lure, and other supplies from our sponsors, Kaatz Bros, www.kaatzbros.com. They’ve got quality products and get them shipped out quickly!
30 Sep 2019 | 60 - Trapping Ban and Mange | 00:32:13
I know its a little late but in this episode I talk about my thoughts on the California trapping ban, which sets a scary precedent for all of us trappers. Trapping has been under constant attack this past year especially and this is one major foothold for the antis. I also field an email question about mange in coyotes, and mention a couple helpful resources.
14 Jan 2020 | 73 - Combines and Coyotes DVD Review | 00:10:19
This is a short episode but this DVD with Randy Smith is definitely worth watching if you want to be a serious coyote trapper. There's nothing special that Randy does, just a simple system repeated over and over. One of the really impressive things he shows is how he skins coyotes on the trapline. He flat snatches the hide off!
23 Aug 2019 | Ep 55 - Preseason Scouting | 00:37:40
In this episode I talk through some preseason tactics for scouting, what to look for, and how you might approach selecting a trapping property differently. Scat and tracks are the most commonly keyed on sign, but looking for major dispersal routes may be the key to really racking up fur in numbers.
07 May 2020 | 87 - How to price your trapping services | 01:13:54
In this episode I talk through a spreadsheet I put together that outlines, and allows you to consider all the overhead costs that should be factored when you are pricing jobs. This sheet breaks your rate down into monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly rates or targets. This is something that you can use as a starting point when you are considering what your rates should be. I’d be happy to share this spreadsheet with anyone that is interested, just shoot me an email at kris@coyotetrappingschool.com. Link to this on YouTube - https://youtu.be/EmdfKBE-3Xg Also mentioned in this episode is the book “Profit First” a game changer in the way an owner manages finances in the business. 12 Nov 2020 | 108 - Coyote Biology and Behavior | 00:41:08
In this episode I touch quickly on what could be a major impact on the fur market, related to COVID. Then I go through a general overview of coyote biology and behavior. As trappers, we should be experts on the game that we pursue, so I thought it might be helpful to review some data regarding coyotes, hopefully to improve our effectiveness as trappers. Coyotes are a pretty interesting critter anyway, especially looking at their expansion throughout North American, and possibly soon South America. To get a Shortliner Trapping Bag, Fur Stocking, or beavertail wallet be sure to visit my shop https://www.coyotetrappingschool.com/shop/ Trapping season is here for some and coming quickly for others, be sure to get your supplies from Kaatz Bros Lures, www.kaatzbros.com and email me with questions or podcast ideas kris@coyotetrappingschool.com

21 Feb 2020 | 77 - Where to Sell Glands | 00:08:25
This is a quick episode but I think a valuable one, Kaatz Bros has a great page on their site detailing what glands they buy and how much they pay. Of course all prices are subject to change, but this is a great resource for trappers to quickly check and get an idea of if they think it would be worth it for them to save glands for their catch. In general I’d say if you are catching big numbers of a particular species, then it is likely worthwhile saving the glands to sell or trade with a trapping supply dealer. Here is a link the the Kaatz Bros page - https://www.kaatzbros.com/reports/glands-essence-castor-and-carcasses-wanted/ Also be sure to check out their DVDs on how to get the most out of your catches particularly where glands are concerned - https://www.kaatzbros.com/product/glands-a-trappers-commodity-dvd-with-kyle-kaatz/ And finally here is a video I did showing how to remove coyote glands - https://youtu.be/_v4dEaTcC30
11 Sep 2019 | Ep 58 - Arkansas Trapper Bruce Fires | 00:58:12
In this episode I talk with Bruce Fires, and Arkansas trapper that just got started trapping coyotes last year. For a beginnner Bruce had a great first season and we talk through some of the things he learned, where he got his information on getting started, and general coyote trapping topics.
31 Jan 2020 | 75 – Canines Avoiding Sets Question | 00:36:07
In this episode I dig into a pretty detailed question I got in from a listener who is having issues with coyotes and fox consistently working his dirtholes from the sides, appearing to avoid the trap pattern. He lines out several ideas that he thinks may be possible causes and I address those and give my own opinions on what may be going on and some approaches to try and correct the issue. Using game cameras at your sets is a catch 22, it gives you a lot of insight into what the critters are actually doing, but most of the time that insight isn’t what you want to see!
03 Sep 2020 | 100 - Faith and the First Longliner | 00:34:37
In this episode I talk about one of the most important things in my life, my faith. I believe that we were put on this earth by our Heavenly Father, and that through His son, Jesus Christ, our sins have been forgiven and we can have a personal relationship with God. And one of the most important things in that relationship is spreading the Gospel and letting others know about the Good News of Jesus Christ. And don’t forget to visit our sponsor, Kaatz Bros Lures, www.kaatzbros.com for all of your trapping supply needs, the season is coming quickly!

15 Nov 2018 | Ohio Trapline - Episode 16 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:31:39
In this episode I recap my recent trapping trip to Ohio. I love getting the opportunity to trap new places with new people. There is always something to learn running with another trapper and I encourage everyone if you get the opportunity to run the line with someone else, even just for a day. You will definitely take something away and become a better trapper for it.
19 Aug 2019 | Ep 54 - "Master Wolfer" Book Review | 00:56:17
In this episode I unveil my latest creation, and what my bigger/longer term goal hopefully is with this project. I also review James Lucero's "Master Wolfer" book. Mr. Lucero is a predator control trapper in New Mexico and has taken his share of coyotes. This is definitely a book worth picking up, there are some real gems that I think will improve your coyote 'line!
29 Aug 2019 | Ep 56 - Kent Schank Interview | 00:44:38
In this episode I interview western trapper Kent Schank, who goes by the Instagram handle @backcountry.sassn and also Fur Addicts on YouTube. We talk western cat trapping, scouting, kids on the trapline, fur sales (amazing what some of those western cats bring!) and anti activity. We cover a wide range of topics and as always its interesting to hear how other folks in other areas do things.
01 Sep 2020 | 99 - Leatherwork | 00:47:24
In this episode I share some of my findings and hopefully some helpful tips and tricks that I’ve picked up since I started doing leatherwork, particularly making beavertail items. I’ve had a good bit of success with the small effort I’ve put into it and have no doubt that it can be replicated. There are plenty of good resources on YouTube and other online locations. 16 May 2019 | Coyote Ramblings - Episode 42 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:29:48
In this episode I go through a recent article published in Quality Whitetails about a large coyote research project in the Southeast. The article focuses on what the data means for managing deer, but I think the data could also help us as trappers learn more about the coyote and his habits. I also touch on a few things I'm thinking of doing differently for the coming season, particularly some things that I've read in O'Gorman's Hoofbeats of a Wolfer book.
25 Apr 2019 | Summertime Coyote Trapping - Episode 39 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:36:44
I've been getting a lot of questions lately about what bait and lure to use trapping in the summer. In this episode I talk about some of the challenges of summer trapping and also give a run down of how to overcome those challenges, and some bait and lure thoughts. Summer trapping is a little different than fur trapping, but you're still learning and adapting to the coyote's habits. You just have to think about it a little different. They are still very catchable.
21 May 2019 | Hog Trapping - Episode 41 - Coyote Trapping School | 00:37:06
In this episode I delve into hog trapping, as I've just recently got my hands on some high tech hog trapping equipment. I don't yet have much experience trapping hogs but a good friend of mine is a hog biologist that specializes in trapping them so I've leaned on him heavily for some hog trapping knowledge. And I'll share with you what I learn along the way.
06 Jan 2020 | 72 - Trapping Today Interview | 00:59:40

In this episode I discuss the results of the survey I recently sent out.
15 Nov 2019 | No excuses - Just Trap | 00:15:20
In this quick episode I get right down to the nitty gritty. There is all kinds of debate about the best trap to use for coyotes and you can really get bogged down and not get started if you get too caught up in it. If you're interested in trapping don't let that worry you, just get some traps and get started. You can adjust your setup down the road, its more important to get the experience than it is for everything to be perfect. Be sure to visit www.coyotetrappingschool.com to learn more about coyote trapping
20 Sep 2019 | Ep 59 - "Mindset of a Pro" Book Review | 00:39:47
In this episode I review Clint Locklear's book, "Mindset of a Professional." This isn't a strategies and tactics book, but obviously by the title a mindset book. It speaks to the many people that may start off with the outlook that being a professional trapper isn't realistic. He goes through and breaks down how you could make a living fur trapping by state hopping, then gets into other ways of making trapping pay that can add to the fur income. It is a book for an open minded trapper and is great for the realization that just because people say its not possible, if you think through realistically and put together a plan, it may just be possible, whatever your idea is.
22 Jul 2020 | 94 - Trapping Resources | 00:28:52
In this episode I talk about some of the trapping resources that are available, and beneficial, for beginner and seasoned trappers alike. In today’s age there is more access to information than ever, some good, some just so-so. Here are a few of the good resources out there! 06 Nov 2019 | 65 - NAFA No More | 00:36:59
65 – NAFA No More – Coyote Trapping School Podcast In this episode I talk about the many rumors that have been surrounding North American Fur Auctions lately. On November 4th NAFA announced filing for creditor protection, similar to chapter 11 bankruptcy. There are still many questions to be answered. Many trappers still have fur at NAFA, and of course the new trapping season is upon us. What are the options for selling your fur this season? This season may again be tough but hopefully we are coming out of the down fur market soon! 05 Jun 2020 | 90 - Ideas on Lead Generation | 00:38:42
In this episode I discuss a few different options for generating leads or calls for your wildlife control business. One key in my opinion is that you must be online, so you need a website. Then it boils down to whether you want to buy leads or generate them organically. Both options work but organic leads take more time to grow. I think its a good idea to utilize both options, at least until your organic leads are generating enough business that you don’t need additional leads. If you’re interested in writing some articles for me shoot me an email, likewise if you are interested in the fur trimmed leather bag let me know that as well! 26 Jul 2019 | 51 - Summer Beaver Trapping | 00:20:42
In this episode I talk through some of my thoughts and ideas around summer beaver trapping, first off the idea that I'm not a fan of summer trapping anything unless you are getting paid! Not only are you dealing with the heat but also turtles, snakes, and in some cases even alligators. There are things you can do to avoid these encounters, hopefully this will help you if you decided to give it a try.
27 Mar 2019 | Fur Tanneries - Episode 35 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:12:50
There are multiple options when it comes to getting fur tanned, whether you're just wanting to get your first coyote tanned for a wall hanger or you want to get a batch tanned to try making things with. First off, no offense to taxidermists, but you're cheapest option is not to take it to a taxidermist. They are going to send it off anyway and you'll get charged from them too. Here are several tanneries that specialize in fur tanning, some I've used and some I haven't -
I hope this helps you find somewhere to send your furs to get tanned!
29 Dec 2019 | 71 – Otter Trapping with Chief | 00:22:24
In today’s podcast my son “Chief” sits down with me and we talk a little about otter trapping. 11 Jul 2020 | 93 - Alaska Trapping - A Conservation Story | 00:43:16
In this episode I talk about my experience trapping invasive foxes on an Aleutian island in Alaska. It was quite the adventure and also quite the conservation success story. Since the 1940s there has been an initiative to remove the nonnative foxes from islands and restore them to seabird nesting grounds. Not just helping all seabirds populations but bringing the Aleutian cackling goose (a subspecies of the Canada goose) from the brink of extinction to a population of over 150,000! These are the stories that the public doesn’t hear when trapping bans are proposed - trapping is conservation! Here is an article that I wrote about my experience: https://trappingtoday.com/aleutian-experience-one-trappers-story-fox-trapping-alaskan-islands/ This was the head biologist that coordinated our trapping efforts: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/fox-extermination-aleutian-islands-alaska As always, be sure to support our sponsors, Kaatz Bros Lures, www.kaatzbros.com and email me with questions or podcast ideas kris@coyotetrappingschool.com

21 Nov 2018 | Pan Covers - Episode 17 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:13:07
Pan covers are a vital piece of a predator trappers tool box. They prevent dirt and sand from filling in under your trap pan and keeping your trap from firing. There are plenty of different options for pan covers, I recommend trying several and seeing which fits you best.
27 Jul 2020 | 95 - Gator Tales | 00:52:52
In this episode I talk about some of my gator hunting and trapping stories from years past. Man I wish I had a video camera along back then, that would have made some great videos, but the least I can do is share some of these stories and hope that you get as much enjoyment out of them as I do reliving them. 29 Sep 2020 | 103 - Ryan Carpenter - R and R Trading Post | 00:57:31
In this episode I interview Ryan Carpenter, one of the R’s of R and R Trading Post. Ryan and his wife, Renee, have a fur sewing business in Pennsylvania. We talk about a wide range of topics including how Ryan got started trapping and how they got started in the fur sewing business. I love seeing our fur get used here locally instead of being shipped off and never getting to see the final product. 07 May 2019 | Catfishing - Episode 40 - Coyote Trapping School Podcast | 00:56:18
One of my favorite summertime activities is catfishing, especially with trotlines, jugs, and limb lines. Its like summertime trapping, except enjoyable! And a great way to quickly fill the freezer. It is very easy and cheap to do any of these methods, and you can even use a kayak or canoe and do them effectively too. If you're itching to fill your trapping fix during the off season give one of these methods a try, just be sure you've got plenty of grease to release them into!

14 Mar 2019 | Cheap Way to Start Trapping | 00:17:08
A few episodes ago we talked about the cost of getting into trapping, and its not insignificant. It is also a serious time investment as well. But there is a way to dip your toe in the water and see if this is something you really want to get into. Dog proof raccoon traps are a great way to dabble in trapping, not break the bank, and have fun along the way. They are simple and easy to use and require very little maintenance.
10 Jul 2019 | Kids on the Trapline | 00:26:51
With a young, and growing!!!, family it is important to me to get my son involved in the outdoors and trapping, in hopes that he will stick with it and appreciate the lifestyle that comes with it. In today's world kids, and people in general, are more and more detached from the land and the realities of life. Trapping is a great way to engage kids in an outdoor activity and keep them interested. |
