There may be no other issue that exposes cowardly leaders than the issue of the 'Thin Blue Line' Flag. In this episode, Travis Yates discusses why this issue should be a seminal moment in law enforcement leadership and why those in the profession should be concerned with any leader that is unable to defend a symbol marked with over 100 years of tradition and honor.

26 Jan 2023Law Enforcement Recruiting with Doug Larsen00:44:06

Send us a text

Law Enforcement Recruiting is in the middle of a crisis. If leaders don't change direction and embrace new concepts, the profession will die a slow and painful death. It is up to Courageous Leaders to fight the status quo and fix recruitment now.

Doug Larsen is a former police officer that has a philosophy on recruiting that every leader needs to hear. His previous clients have even told him to slow down the recruits so they can keep up with the hiring process. If this sounds crazy today, it's because it is and you need to hear what Doug has to say.

It just may change everything you thought you knew about law enforcement recruiting.

30 Jan 2023Leadership In The Aftermath of Memphis00:14:53

Send us a text

In this episode, Travis Yates breaks down the incident in Memphis and what has been missing in all the conversations about this horrific event.

According to Yates, the author of "The Courageous Police Leader" what everyone is missing is that what happened in Memphis was a leadership problem.

"If one of those officers was a leader, that never happens and that is exactly what every chief or sheriff should be asking themselves today.  Maybe they’ve done the duty to intervene training or any of the other check box things we are told to do and I don’t mind that bt no training program can take the place of leadership. If they have not fostered a culture of leadership in their agency…a philosophy that everyone with a badge has the duty of a leader, then they aren’t addressing the right issues. It is that simple.  Everything good and everything bad is because of leadership."

31 Jan 2023Courageous Nobility with Sgt. Jeff Daukas00:45:35

Send us a text

A core principle of Courageous Leadership is "Courageous Nobility." Without it, nothing else in leadership will matter and today this is exactly what the law enforcement needs.

Regardless of what society believes, leaders must have a moral compass both in their life and on the job. It is only through the lens of character and integrity that leaders can make difficult decisions in the correct fashion.

Sergeant Jeff Daukas is a current patrol sergeant with over twenty years of service and he will discuss, at a high level, exactly what is meant by "Courageous Nobility" and how it can enable a leader to achieve greatness.

07 Mar 2023The IACP, Politics and Activism with Chief Scott Hughes00:51:43

Send us a text

In this episode of the Courageous Leadership Podcast, Travis speaks to Chief Scott Hughes about the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and whether law enforcement leaders should trust professional organizations completely to steer their agencies.

Chief Hughes recently asked the IACP President  a question on social media and was blocked from further communication. Chief Hughes is a member of IACP and gives a balanced approach to how law enforcement leaders should use professional organizations within their departments.

The IACP has launched a campaign to assist law enforcement to "build trust" with the community. Chief Hughes discusses some issues with the idea that law enforcement lacks trust within communities when the overall trust rating is high compared to other professions. That discussion begins at minute 23.

10 Mar 2023The Danger of Consent Decrees with Bob Scales00:52:18

Send us a text

Consent Decrees, imposed by the Department of Justice, have been ruining police agencies and communities for 30 years but leaders continue to voluntarily enter them without seemingly understanding the immediate danger they pose to the future of their agency and the community.

Just this week, the DOJ announced a Consent Decree in Louisville along with an investigation in Memphis. Both of these high crime cities will soon be destroyed beyond disaster.

In this episode, Dr. Travis Yates speaks to one of the few professionals that have been speaking on the dangers with Consent Decrees, Bob Scales.

Mr. Scales is the CEO of Police Strategies - www.policestrategies.com - and offers real solutions for every law enforcement leader that should be anticipating a visit from the DOJ.

11 Mar 2023The 'Neck Restraint' Lie and How It Affects Law Enforcement00:27:32

Send us a text

Vascular Neck Restraints (VNR's) have not caused an in-custody death or serious injury in the past 50 years. Yet, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) considers it to be deadly force. Despite this contradiction of facts, the DOJ has recently used this IACP recommendation as part of the consent decree with the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department, which hasn't helped with any positive outcomes.

This is just one example that shows how police chiefs across the country may mistakenly believe that the IACP "has their backs" when in fact, the IACP are making recommendations that contradict facts and research - while the DOJ is using IACP recommendations against law enforcement agencies across the country,

Dr. Travis Yates breaks down this disturbing information and how the DOJ is using the IACP to destroy law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

In this episode, Travis Yates discusses the issue of what higher education can do for law enforcement. Various studies indicate that a college educated police officer is preferred but should that really be the metric to a professional police officer?

Travis will also discuss his recent journey going back to school along with some of the options that law enforcement professionals have if they are considering the same.

Travis just returned from a week of training law enforcement leaders so his voice is stressed but the message remains important.

06 Apr 2023Dealing With Cowardly Leaders featuring Lt. Bob Kroll00:35:28

Send us a text

There may not be a better example of Courageous Police Leadership than Minneapolis Lt. (ret.) Bob Kroll. Over three decades, Lt. Kroll policed, supervised, and managed within the Minneapolis Police Department and spent his last six years as the President of their Police Union.

In the midst of failed leadership, Lt. Kroll maintained the principles of Courageous Police Leadership through his integrity, communication, and his anticipation of what needed to be addressed within the city and police department.

Cowardly leaders within the city began blaming Lt. Kroll for all of their failures long before the George Floyd incident and what occurred in that aftermath will shock you.

Despite cowards all around him, Lt. Kroll never wavered and his actions are a model for all leaders to follow.

"If you make a job impossible, good luck finding anyone willing to fo the job."
Dr. Travis Yates - Courageous Police Leadership Alliance - www.cplalliance.org

Law enforcement leaders continue to let the enemies of order and public safety place restrictions and expectations on the law enforcement profession that are impossible. The recent criminal charges against seven California Highway Patrol Officers is sadly one example of many where law enforcement is being held to a standard that they could never meet.

Dr. Travis Yates continues the discussion of law enforcement leadership making decisions based on emotions and feelings rather than actual facts. There may not be a better example than law enforcement organizations and police leadership banning the vascular neck restraints or moving this proven safe and effective technique to deadly force.

In this episode, Travis speaks to retired law enforcement officer Joe Mech. Joe was a law enforcement officer for 29 years and was a certified trainer in the Vascular Neck Restraint. He discusses the training, safety, and stupidity of what leaders have done in recent years to this valuable technique.

11 May 2023Paying The Price For Courageous Leadership with Bobby Ledogar00:43:25

Send us a text

There is a high price to be paid for Courageous Leadership.

Dr. Travis Yates is joined in this week's episode with Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal (ret.) Bobby Ledogar. In 2015, Bobby was stationed in the warrant  task force on Long Island. He had appointed Dawn Mahoney, the sole female, to the task force previously and launched an investigation after Mahoney alleged that she was being harassed by other members of the unit.

As the leader responsible for the unit, Ledogar requested an investigation. Shortly after, Bobby experienced various forms of retaliation including multiple internal affairs investigations and was eventually fired.

Bobby continues to fight for what is right and his story is a price paid for leading with courage.

18 May 2023The Cowards of Louisville with Sgt. John Mattingly00:48:35

Send us a text

There is no greater example of the damage that cowardly leaders can do to a country, community, and the lives of law enforcement then what the Louisville Police Department did to Sergeant John Mattingly (ret.) in the aftermath of the Breonna Taylor death.

Every aspect of what the public was told about this case was a lie and Sergeant John Mattingly went from fighting for his life after being shot in the line of duty to fighting for the safety of his family when the lies being told were never combated by the very leaders within the department and city that knew the truth of that night.

Mattingly is the author of "12 Seconds in the Dark: A Police Officer's Firsthand Account of the Breonna Taylor Raid" and is a sought out speaker across the country.

The world changed in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd but what if all of it was a lie?

She is a former reporter and anchor for a major Minneapolis news station and currently works for Alpha News. She is the best selling author of the 2022 book, “They’re Lying: The Media, the Left and the Death of George Floyd” and she is the producer of a documentary based on that book called “The Fall of Minneapolis.”

21 Nov 2023The Scam Called 'Recruiting'00:13:38

Send us a text

Dr. Travis Yates has spoken extensively about the need for law enforcement to actually recruit and those that are taking advantage of the recruitment crisis in the profession.

After a recent Courageous Leadership Seminar, Travis was told by a recruiter that they spent $150,000 with a recruiting company and had no results.

That real life example is unacceptable and has a lot to do with leaders making decisions on issues with the "shiny object" in mind rather than what actually works.

This episode provides some quick insights on what must be done to fix the recruiting issue and how agencies can ensure that any funds spent on "recruiting campaigns" are not wasted.

04 Dec 2023Cops Going To Jail For Following Policy00:18:01

In the days that followed May 25, 2020, major police organizations and thousands of law enforcement officials bought the narrative that that a white, black, and asian police officer murdered George Floyd in broad daylight. Based on a viral video alone and outrage across the globe, those same officials made official statements condemning the officers.

After the release of Liz Collins' documentary, "The Fall of Minneapolis," those leaders have no excuses but their advocacy for officers in prison that followed their policy and training should be troubling.

Dr. Travis Yates discusses this important issue and asks some important questions that every law enforcement official should consider.

06 Dec 2023The Last Stand with the Phoenix Police Department00:35:34

Send us a text

DOJ Consent Decrees have been one of the most destructive actions against law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve. While the federal government is Constitutionally prohibited from taking control of local law enforcement, most agencies simply agree to a consent decree without seeing any evidence that it is needed.

As a DOJ Investigation comes to a conclusion in Phoenix, the city has taken a different approach. The City Council has asked to actually see the results of the investigation prior to agreeing to a federal take over of the agency.

As the DOJ has always done in the past, they refused and are asking the city to enter into a consent decree without seeing the actual evidence of need.

Travis discusses the importance of Phoenix standing up to the DOJ and what that can mean for law enforcement across the country.

Dr. Yates previously discussed this important matter with Bob Scales and you can listen to that here.

The How Many Stops Act legislation in New York City is the beginning of the end for effective policing in New York City.  In this episode, Dr. Travis Yates discusses the recently approved legislation that's sparking fierce debate and concern for the future of the NYPD and community safety. In a move that's seen as both an attempt at accountability and a hindrance to law enforcement, New York City's council has overridden Mayor Eric Adams’ veto to pass a bill requiring police to document the age, race, and gender of every civilian they encounter. Join  as we discuss the reverberations of this decision, poised to ripple through the veins of a city already facing a staffing crisis within its police force and other escalating challenges.

We explore the layers of oversight already in place and the potential for this new legislation to stifle proactive policing and cast an unjust shadow of discrimination over the department. As we navigate the complex landscape of law enforcement reform, we also ponder whether the How Many Stops Act is part of a broader strategy that mimics the calls to defund the police—a strategy that could lead to New York City's unraveling. 02 Feb 2024Imposters Among Us with Turk Gallagher00:31:57

Send us a text

Turk Gallagher isn't just another voice in the maze of law enforcement; he's a beacon of truth in a world where leadership can often falter in the face of adversity. Our latest conversation peels back the layers of command, revealing how a true leader must not only don the badge but also the mantle of responsibility with an authentic heart. Turk's book, "Imposters on the Throne, Warriors in the Shadows," frames our dialogue as we dissect the leadership crisis plaguing the force and the transformative power of confronting internal challenges.

Feelings of disenchantment aren't uncommon among the ranks, but they're symptoms of a larger disease – the cultural fallout from a lack of transparency and a move towards self-preservation over service. We tackle the hard truths about 'incestual leadership' where negative traits breed in the shadows of authority, and how this can spiral into a toxic work environment. Yet, it's not all grim; we discuss how brave individuals can be catalysts for change and the importance of recognizing when it's time to part ways with a system that no longer serves its people or its purpose.

As Turk concludes, we are reminded that courageous leadership is more than just a concept; it's the very essence that can rewrite the narrative of law enforcement for the better.

Send us a text

When the rules of engagement change on the streets, what happens to the guardians keeping the peace? Sean Willoughby, president of the Albuquerque Police Officers Association, steps into the spotlight to shed light on the stark realities of police reform under DOJ consent decrees.
