28 Jun 2021MARKUANN SMITH01:15:16

MARKUANN SMITH - 27

In this podcast we talk with Markuann about his early life growing up on the streets of Far Rockaway in Queens, working in the Hip Hop and R & B world going on the road with his brother, Father MC, and in recent years how he came up with the idea to create the “Godfather of Harlem” series on Epix.

Markuann was born in Harlem, New York, Markuann spent a majority of his early life in Queens, attending Far Rockaway High School and, later on, Garden State Academy. As a child, growing up on the rough streets of Far Rockaway in Queens he found refuge at home watching a lot of films. This exposure nurtured his love for the craft of film, as he considered those movies an escape from his reality.

From his life on the road with Father MC, he spent 16 years working at BET and during that time he became very close with his Godmother, Margaret Johnson who was the granddaughter of the famed Harlem gangster, Ellsworth Raymond Johnson aka Bumpy Johnson. It was through listening to the stories Margaret Johnson told him that he came up with the story that is the basis for the series, “Godfather of Harlem”.

Markuann is very honest about his bumpy road to success. His mission in life is to follow his passion not his pension while never giving up because failure is not an option. His journey is an inspiration for all.

BEST OF SEASON 1 - MIKE FIGGIS

Mike Figgis is an iconic film director, screenwriter, and composer. Figgis began his career as a musician. Growing up he was exposed to music early as his father was a jazz musician. In the late 60’s he started out playing trumpet and guitar in the People Band and is audible in their first record (produced by Charlie Watts) in 1968. He played keyboard with Bryan Ferry in an R & B band, Gas Board and then moved to London to study music and became involved in the fringe theatre group, before forming his own company, The Mike Figgis Group, in 1980.

After over 20 years as a musician, he got involved in theater including experimental theater and performance art using film rear projection in his presentations. He bought a 16mm film camera and started shooting film and began cultivating his path to become a filmmaker.

Figgis made his feature film debut with the low budget Stormy Monday in 1988. The film earned him attention as a director who could get interesting performances from established Hollywood actors. His first American film was Internal Affairs, which helped to revive the career of Richard Gere. This was followed by his next Hollywood feature, Mr. Jones, was misunderstood by the studio, who attempted to market the downbeat story as a feelgood film, resulting in a box office flop. Figgis poured his disenchantment with the film industry into Leaving Las Vegas, which starred Nicholas Cage and Elisabeth Shue, which earned Figgis Academy Award nominations for Best Directing and Best Screenplay. He followed this up with the romantic drama One Night Stand and The Loss of Sexual Innocence.

24 Jun 2020MATTY LIBATIQUE01:30:10

Matty Libatique is truly one of the greatest cinematographers I have had the chance to work with throughout my career.

Matty comes from a Filipino background but was born in New York City in Elmhurst in the borough of Queens. His father, Justiniano Libatique, was an amateur photographer and worked in a film laboratory in New York. As a kid growing up in New York, his dad gifted Matty a Nikon and taught him photography fundamentals at an age when he did not realize he would be using this knowledge for his entire career.

During his University years he studied sociology and communications at Cal State Fullerton and then went to AFI for an MA in Cinematography.

In this podcast we talked about his journey to become the great cinematographer he is today including his career long collaboration with Darren Aronofsky going back to when they were students at AFI and working with great DP’s like Ed Lachman, a very important mentor for Matty.

We also talked about some of his other collaborations with directors like Joel Schumacher, Spike Lee, Jon Favreau, Ernest Dickerson, Bradley Cooper, Rashid Johnson, Mathieu Kassovitz and many others….

As a cinematographer, he is one of the great pioneers of manipulating the photochemical process for extreme dramatic effect by using lab processing techniques like Cross Process & Skip Bleach. He is one of a small group of bold DP’s that were the original trailblazers that experimented frequently with using the cross process and skip bleach process in the work including Malik Sayeed, Harris Savides, Bob Richardson, Darius Khonji and Ellen Kuras to name a few.

He has Academy Award nominations for Black Swan and A Star is Born and has many festival wins for films including Spirit Awards for Requiem For a Dream and Black Swan.

His parents, Justiniano Libatique and Georgina Porter are immigrants from the Philippines.

Matty’s Filipino heritage is very important to him. He speaks and understands Tagalog and comes from French heritage on his paternal side.

Throughout his career he has shot many important music videos including the 1998 Jay-Z video Ja Rule & Amil: Can I Get A….. directed by Steve Carr and also the Tracey Chapman video with Julie Dash directing called Give Me One Reason.

18 Feb 2020MICHAEL HAUSMAN01:19:39

Michael Hausman , mega American film producer of Brokeback Mountain is most at home on a quiet ranch. He tends towards movies with small town settings - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The People vs Larry Flynt - to name a couple, and was even propositioned to be the Mayor of Memphis Tennessee after shooting three films there. Hausman’s All the King’s Men took place in Louisiana and starred Sean Penn, Kate Winslet and James Gandolfini, with whom he became close friends on set. He tells of a time he placed an undercover guard in the lobby of Gandolfini’s hotel to intercept any ‘deliveries’ that were causing distractions during shoots. On the shoot’s final day, Hausman found a Rolex in his trailer signed - Thank you, James. Hausman doesn’t turn down bustling projects though, executive producing Martin Scorsese’s famed Gangs of New York, which shot in Rome, and Milos Forman’s Amadeus, which was set in Vienna but shot in Prague. After any project, though, he still manages to escape with time at his buffalo ranch out in Montana.

25 Nov 2021BEST OF SEASON 1 - MARKUANN SMITH01:15:27

BEST OF SEASON 1 - MARKUANN SMITH

01 May 2020MIKE FIGGIS01:33:48
