We all want consistent results. Of course we do! Unfortunately, we often invest more energy in hoping for outcomes than in maximizing our effort & consistency.

In today's episode, I'm sharing a conversation with one of my Fat Loss Fast Track clients where we talk about effort versus outcomes.

When I asked her what she wanted, she said she wanted more consistent results. I quickly redirected her to a focus on consistency in her effort and the application of what she knows.

While she agreed with me, she also shared that she forgets. Day to day, she forgets to redirect her focus from outcomes to effort. Fair point!

We took the conversation to how she can keep effort & consistency in the forefront of her mind.

He finds himself rationalizing choices because one treat or indulgence won't really make a big difference in the long run.

Part of this is human nature. Our motivation, if not constantly cultivated, ebbs & flows. Plus, with 70 lbs of weight lost, it's easy to focus on how much you've accomplished and use that to justify throttling back on the effort.

And, we can rationalize & justify pretty much everything.

The problem is: that's not what this client wants. He doesn't want to throttle back. He doesn't want to rationalize & justify. He wants to overcome the complacency. Today, we talk about how.

Not long ago, someone asked me if I'd provide transcripts for the 12 WT weekly challenge webinars. Then, I got a similar question about the format of the 12 Weeks to Transformation. My answer to both requests was the same...

"Is the information in the 12 Weeks to Transformation all videos? If so, is there any way to have a transcript of the content? I don't retain information very well when it is presented verbally. I do much better with the written word."

Here's the deal, my friend. We aren't here to learn. We're here to change. There's a really big difference in those two approaches and many people follow the familiar "learning" path, failing to realize that it's not the same as the "changing" path. 

We're diving into that in today's episode of the podcast and I'll be sharing how I coach clients through the changing process (not the learning process) in my 12 Weeks to Transformation groups.

I used to use stress, pressure, chaos and crisis as reasons to not take care of myself. As soon as life got hard, I'd stop trying. I'd stop making good food choices, I'd stop going to the gym, I'd stop being financially responsible. I'd check out. 

I'll be the first to admit that it's not always easy to do the right things when it feels like you're in crisis mode, but there are a few things I knew for sure: 

  • Take care of yourself makes the chaos dramatically more manageable
  • Not taking care of yourself makes it dramatically more difficult to manage
  • It is possible to make great choices when life is hard
    It is worth it

Last week was straight CHAOS for me. I closed on a new property and there were innumerable hoops to jump through at the last minute. I moved into it. I moved out of my tiny house the same day. My boyfriend moved in with me. A new tenant moved into the tiny house. My 98-year-old grandmother was in the hospital and required surgery. My first book launched. The 12 WT launched. Plus, I had my normal workload, which is quite heavy to begin with. 

I was determined to not only get through the week, but to enjoy it and to take impeccable care of myself through it all. In today's podcast, I'm sharing my own strategies for navigating chaos without crisis and without putting self-care on the back burner.

  • When consuming an indulgence, at what point does eating more make you enjoy it less rather than more?
  • What can you do, in preparation for a holiday or vacation, to make yourself feel amazing?

I got an email the other day that I want to share with you guys.  I think this email could have been written by any one of us and it represents one of the most significant issues keeping us from reaching our goals:  the on-again-off-again cycle.

The beautiful woman who emailed me wants to change.  She wants to be healthy.  She wants to be a better example for her kids.  She wants to feel better about herself.

She doesn't kinda want it.  She really wants it.

But...

She consistently makes food choices that aren't doing her any favors.  She overeats.  She overindulges.  She doubts her ability to change.  She doubts that health is really achievable for her.  She wants so badly to learn how to get unstuck!

Man, I completely understand these struggles and frustrations.....been there... and it's a hard place to be!

In today's podcast, we will explore a new mindset and some simple strategies that will help you break this ebb and flow cycle.

How To Get Unstuck
I've faced the on-again-off-again cycle many times.  It's exhausting, pure and simple!

I'll share with you parts of her email:

I found your podcast about a month ago on Spotify. I was randomly scrolling though looking for something to listen to and I found primal potential. I cant remember exactly what episode it was but I remember you were talking about not arguing for our limitations. I was hooked.

I have always been a heavy girl. I really ballooned up when I had my children. right now I am sitting at 270 I am 5’3″.

I have always tried to lose weight I will start off strong and then I will mess up and I’m like f*@k it.

I will be all gung ho to get it together and then have a bad day or week and reach for the convenience of ordering something or picking up something quick. I have to break that habit for our heath and our finances.
I want to change our lifestyle before it negatively effects our children any more than it already has.

Anyway all of this rambling is basically to ask where you think I should start. I’m tired of being fat. I’m tired of hating my body. I’m just so over it and I’m so lost on what to do. I’m convinced that I will never be healthy because I haven’t my whole life.

I’m stuck in that toxic place that is telling me it doesn’t matter how much I try I will never be able to do it and I’m over it. I want to get out of there. I want to believe in myself. I want to change my quality of life so I can enjoy it with my children! 

She says she starts out all gung-ho but then falls back into old habits.  Don't get me wrong- it's great to have motivation and enthusiasm but, you can be setting yourself up for failure with the pedal to the medal 0-60 approach.

You know what I mean, starting out, right out of the gate and deciding, "I'm going to eat more vegetables, drink more water, eat less sugar, workout more, sleep more, stress less, find healthy recipes, stop eating out" -- get my point?

You are likely trying to do too much, too fast and setting yourself up to feel overwhelmed and like you haven't cleared the high bar you set.

Here are the recommendations I made to this listener to help her figure out how to get unstuck.

Step 1:  Don't change anything at all.  For 7-14 days, just track. Write down what you eat and how it makes you feel. You need to establish your baseline. What you're doing, how it impacts your energy, where you're starting from. No pressure, just paying attention.

Step 2:  Simplify.  Make ONE change.   Don't add more until your initial change feels effortless.  In my Fat Loss Fast Track groups, we typically start with breakfast. To learn more about how to make breakfast a fat burning meal, listen to this podcast or this one.

Step 3:  Change your mind.  Stop arguing for your limitations and disqualifying yourself from change or growth.  Remember, the past doesn't define the present or the future unless you choose to make the same choices. Each new day brings the opportunity to make a different choice.

In today's podcast, I'm talking about how doing less, focusing on fewer things and slowing down your thoughts can actually accelerate your progress towards your goals.

Slow Down To Go Faster

In today's episode, we're covering how to take a step back, simplify, and create a baseline to avoid frustration, and achieve your goals.

You want results NOW. Trust me, I've been there. You hit the ground running and you are doing EVERYTHING you can think of to get to your end goal. But are you doing too much, too soon? Are you considering the sustainability of your actions? Do your intentions match your actions? And are your actions consistent?

Does our motivation exceed our training?

Often times, we create false fantasy plans in our head that do not reflect the reality of our actions. We set a baseline so high that it may not be doable at our current training and commitment level. The fantasy plans and inability to stick to these crazy expectations lead very quickly to frustration, which can easily turn into quitting altogether.

Breaking the cycle

Breaking free is about doing less. I really believe that you can achieve MORE when you do LESS. The key is separating the fantasy plans from reality.You must build a base that you can obtain, and grow from there. Your base will help you break free from food obsession and yo-yo dieting.

Revisit the 80/20 Rule

The 80/20 Rule is simply 80% of your results stem from just 20% of the things you do, the actions you take. Focus your energy on the 20% of actions that are truly effective and ditch the 80% that doesn't.

Turn off the thought faucet

It is so hard to slow down when our minds are moving at 100 miles per hour. When you catch yourself bouncing all over the place in your thoughts, slow down and focus on RIGHT NOW.

Don't create big plans that you can't execute that then create feelings of failure. Instead, pick one thing to focus on each week. After the week has ended evaluate your progress on that one thing. Take those evaluations and go from there making one change for the next week. These changes will become habits that you can sustain and create a healthy lifestyle that reaches your end goals.

Do you ever read something that makes you immediately level up your actions or effort? I sure do and I love it when that happens!

I'm no longer intrigued by things that sound nice. I'm only intrigued by things I can act on immediately. I'm intrigued by things that help me improve what I do & how I act. My mind is full of ideas. I think we need to know less but do more. 

Today's episode is about something that moved me to action and immediately increased my effort. It's an Instagram post from CrossFit athlete Dan Bailey. After injury and surgery, here's what he had to say: 

"Currently a little over 3 weeks out from surgery after rupturing my quad tendon. Still pretty swollen but it’s getting better every week.

Progress isn’t measured in lbs and kilos but centimeters of knee flexion and reduction in swelling (that and setting a goal to bench 4 wheels). Everyday starts with a POD attitude (performance on demand @tosh.crookedbutterfly) meaning, this is the best your going to feel today, even though your knee looks like a softball, that doesn’t really matter, performance is still demanded, so what can you do mentally, physically and spiritually to increase your work capacity? I’d be lying if I said this is what happens everyday but it’s what I shoot for."

What does "no mud no lotus" mean to you? To me, it's a reminder that all the dark times & moments in my life can take me to a new, brighter, higher level - if I choose to let them.

My life hasn't been easy. In fact, I've been deeply unhappy and hopeless for most of it. It stings a little share that. Because I'm so open about my struggles with depression and obesity, I get a lot of questions about how I came out of the struggles.

There are also a lot of people who assume that the struggles are behind me and it must be "easy" now.

In the spirit of this "no mud no lotus" theme, today I want to share with you some parts of my past struggles that I'm still practicing overcoming. We're talking about fear of judgement from others as well as judging others. We're talking about drama and the perspective of abundance versus the perspective of lack.

Whether you think you're a drama queen or you're sure you're not, you MUST listen to today's podcast! Drama is draining and every single one of us has room for improvment in our creation of and response to drama. Drama takes the form of assumptions, gossip, worry, rumination over the past and so much more. In case you're still convinced that you're not a drama queen, let's take a minute to get on the same page.

Cy Wakeman defines drama as emotional waste and describes drama as mentally wasteful thought processes and unproductive behaviors that keep you from your potential.

Drama includes:

  1. Lack of ownership, accountability or committment
  2. Blaming circumstances or other people for your lack of results
  3. Arguing with circumstances that are non-negotiable
  4. Resistance to change
  5. Spreading gossip
  6. Projecting (and believing) made up stories instead of focusing on facts
  7. Defensiveness to feedback
  8. Dealing with hurt feelings

Questions for the Drama Queen:

Is this mine or someone else's?

Am I doing something productive about it?

Is this my business or someone else's business?

Am I trying to control someone else's thoughts or behaviors?

What actually happened without my story?

What do I know for sure?

What's my part in this?

What are my ideas for resolving the issue?

Am I grounded in reality?

What am I doing today to resolve this?

Other powerful ideas from "No Ego" and today's episode:

"Your ego is brilliant at finding insult where none is intended."

The way we think about & approach fat loss is a problem. When we focus too much on the overall strategy and not enough on the daily strategy, a few things happens:

We can undervalue the importance of today because there is no immediacy to the macro view
We can overwhelm ourselves because we're looking at all the work that needs to be done & all the changes that need to happen instead of narrowing our focus to just today's work
Mental & emotional commitment to a strategy or approach doesn't equate to daily execution. You can attach to a big picture or a lifestyle without ever living it.

This is the fundamental difference between intention & action.

It used to be so easy for me to say to myself, "Alright! I'm really doing it this time! No more excuses! This is it for real! I'm ready!!" But it never happened like that. It just didn't. I became a master of talking myself into whatever choice felt good at the time. I'd say, "It's just this one thing, it can't possibly hurt" or, "I'll be extra strict tomorrow" or "I'll workout later and be sure to burn it off". I knew exactly what debates and arguments worked best. Those types of internal debates are what I refer to as "anchors". They hold you back. They pull you down. They drag you off course. Identifying these anchors and understanding how you justify exceptions is absolutely critical in learning how to stop making excuses. Because really, these excuses, these internal debates are the exact reason you haven't got the results you want. It's the "why" behind your inconsistency. In today's episode we're getting super practical (and personal) about how to stop making excuses by identifying how you justify and excuse choices that won't help you reach your goals.

I strongly recommend you get a copy and read it with your journal nearby.

In his book, he talks about the mindset required to be excellent. He trains some of the best athletes in the world and his primary focus is how they think.

He focuses first on the person: their character, mindset and mental toughness. Only with that solid foundation can he maximize their abilities.

How to Get What You Want in 2017

  1. Define ONE THING that will make the most difference (it doesn't have to be a big thing, but it does need to be tied to a primary thing that is holding you back)
  2. Identify "the work" you can do on a daily basis that will help you get the one thing you want. These are the steps, choices, actions & inactions that exist as opportunities TODAY.
  3. Be honest with yourself by acknowledging what thoughts, circumstances or actions could get in the way
  4. Evaluate your progress every few days by asking, "Am I doing the work? Is it helping? What could I do differently today?"
  5. Have a positive attitude about it!

Have you ever felt like you want to keep eating even when you know you've given your body enough fuel? This is an interesting question from a listener that we're covering in this Saturday's episode!

  • I am at the point where I want to make some career changes. I am currently studying to get my real estate license and I will be working with a great team once I am licensed. The company that I currently work for is not supportive of anything I do outside lab hours (in terms of part-time work) and they are not flexible to allow me to spend time on real estate. My goal is to be self-employed, although I feel the transition is not going to be easy with my current job. Are you still involved with real estate? I would like to hear more about your story of how you started your own businesses and transitioned to being self-employed.
  • I miss your “workouts I love” at the end of your episodes! My question is, what kinds of workouts can we do where we have some flexibility to chat?
  • How did you find your mentor?
  • Do you only coach people on weight loss and is the 12 Weeks to Transformation only about weight loss?
  • At 55 and no career to speak of (long story), can I still make something of myself or find my purpose?
  • Often times after I eat I just don’t feel satisfied. I know that I have fueled my body in a good way because I feel energized and not hungry but I just don’t feel satisfied (if that makes any sense) and I desire other foods that cause me to stray from my plan. Any thoughts?

Sometimes we think we can out-smart ourselves. We think that with enough willpower, grit & determination, we can out-smart ourselves. I don't think that's too effective.

I want to help you work WITH yourself, not against yourself. In today's episode, I want to help you conquer inconsistency and self-sabotage but helping you understand why we so often give in and what we can do to be more strategic in our approach.

Today is all about how your subconscious works. In short, it will always look to avoid pain and seek pleasure. This is simply part of how we are wired for survival.

This can work powerfully in our favor or staunchly against us, depending on what we do and how we think.

Unfortunately, most people have, through years of failed diets and giving up on themselves, associated far more pain with the achievement of their goals than pleasure. Today, we're changing that.

Making some straight-forward adjustments to how you think about your goal can accelerate your progress and improve your life!

Conquer Inconsistency

One of the first strategies I talk about in today's episode is identifying your existing pleasure & pain associations. First, establish your goal. Then, free associate all the painful or negative words, thoughts & feelings associated with the achievement of that goal. Then, free associate all of the positive words, thoughts & feelings associated with the achievement of that goal.

Then identify the opposite of your goal and go through the same process - create a list of all the positive and negative associations you have with whatever is opposite your goal.

Intentionally build the list of pleasurable associations related to the achievement & pursuit of your goal.

Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution.

Focus as much of your energy as possible on what you can do to make the achievement of your goal positive, exciting and fulfilling. Stop putting energy towards why it's hard, frustrating or negative.
