Bethany Cosentino, best known as one half of the indie rock duo Best Coast, is back with her debut solo album Natural Disaster on July 28th. And boy, is it a nugget.

In this episode of Consequence Uncut, Associate Editor Paolo Ragusa sits down with Cosentino to talk about the the album’s personal and political notes. They discuss everything from the inspiration behind the songs to the challenges of making a solo record. Cosentino also opens up about how the summer of 2020 was a catalyst for the album.

“How could I sort of write about this horrific experience of climate change, police brutality, women’s rights being taken from them…just the horror show of America. How can I make sense of this and reckon with this?” she says.

Cosentino previewed the thought-provoking and catchy new effort with the first three singles: “It’s Fine,” “For A Moment,” and “Easy.” Pre-orders for Natural Disaster are available here, and you can find Cosentino’s new tour dates here.

15 Feb 2024Chromeo Pick 10 Essential Dayton Funk Albums00:42:50

For our latest episode of Consequence Uncut, we join electro-funk duo Chromeo as they select 10 essential funk albums that emerged from Dayton, Ohio's legendary music scene in the '70s and '80s. In a Crate Digging interview with Consequence's Associate Editor Paolo Ragusa, Chromeo's Dave 1 and P-Thugg track the evolution of Dayton's funk output, from the "bizarro Parliament Funkadelic" group The Ohio Players, to Slave, to the legendary work of Roger Troutman and Zapp.

As funk enthusiasts, Chromeo are beyond reverent to these midwestern heroes, and their new album Adult Contemporary keeps some of Dayton's more underrepresented qualities at the fore.

15 Jun 2018A$AP Rocky - "Testing"00:06:38
Testing is loud, frenetic, spastic, and about as vibrant as rap can be. The songs are busy, crowded with radiant instrumentation and stacked vocals, and rarely take time to breathe. It’s a welcome addition to a genre that has become so occupied with spacey, bare-bones operations and overly simplistic results.

05 Oct 2023Revamping "Tossed Salad and Scrambled Eggs" for the Frasier Reboot & the Current State of TV Theme Songs with Bruce and Jason T. Miller00:41:07

It is TV Theme Songs Week at Consequence, where we have been ranking and deep-diving into your favorite TV themes.

One iconic theme is “Tossed Salad and Scramble Eggs” from Frasier, and with the show freshly rebooted for a sequel series on Paramount+, it was also time for a fresh take on the song. To learn more about this and the current state of TV theme songs, Liz Shannon Miller spoke to composers Bruce and Jason T. Miller.

Bruce composed the original Frasier theme (along with Wings, Becker, and others), and brought on his son, Jason (‘Til Death, The Odd Couple -- as well as tracks for Kanye West, Keyshia Cole, and Reba McEntire) for the reboot to match the story seeing Frasier himself (Kelsey Grammer) reconnecting with his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

The Millers are not only father and son, but they are also best friends and creative partners. This is why getting their boots-on-the-ground perspective about their Frasier revamp and the current state of the theme song literally blew our socks off.

“It was like, 'Don't mention anything about Seattle, nothing about crazy people, nothing about psychiatry, psychology, anything that has to do with the show, but make it germane to the show,'" Bruce recalls of writing the original theme.

Check out the Frasier on Paramount + here.

Listen to the full interview with Bruce and Jason T. Miller now and you can read the full article on Consequence.net. You can also check out our new "I Never Skip Intro" merch collection, a celebration of those who always stick around for a classic theme, including a T-shirt, hat, and holographic sticker. 05 Mar 2018Superorganism - "Superorganism"00:06:44
When everything’s clicking, Superorganism evokes the genre-hopping hooks of Weezer set against Animal Collective’s sonic experimentation as filtered through Architecture from Helsinki’s pop maximalism. Unlike other bands that flaunt a massive ensemble — looking at you, Polyphonic Spree — Superorganism really makes the most of their members. You can hear them on every song, and the result is a sense of community that's anything but intimate.

18 May 2018Courtney Barnett - "Tell Me How You Really Feel"00:08:15
As expected, Tell Me How You Really Feel still finds Courtney Barnett writing "Courtney Barnett" songs, but there’s an unmistakable growth in the Aussie’s compositions. Her strongest melodies yet meet an untrained voice that’s gaining confidence and a band (Bones Sloane, Dave Mudie, and Dan Luscombe) that’s learned to trust itself to breathe and show restraint at times rather than instinctively douse a song in more scuzz.

27 Jun 2018Jim James - "Uniform Distortion"00:07:32
In contrast to his previous release, Uniform Distortion isn’t wrapped in a web of psychedelia, but rather in a blanket of solace. With lines like, “I guess I’ll leave it in a song,” this album, at its core, functions as a coping mechanism for James and a delightful extension of his songwriting skills for his fans. Through the strain of incessant information, James cuts through the bullshit to remind us to all take a pause … and that alone these days is remarkable.

21 Aug 2023Allen Hughes on His Tupac Docuseries Dear Mama and Why Hip-Hop Can Save Us00:33:03

In this episode of Consequence Uncut, Senior Entertainment Editor Liz Shannon Miller sits down with Allen Hughes to talk about his new FX Docuseries Dear Mama, a five-part documentary miniseries about the life of Tupac Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur.

As one half of the filmmaking duo the Hughes Borthers alongside his twin brother Albert, Allen Hughes is an acclaimed director, screenwriter, and producer. The pair made their feature film debut with 1993’s Menace II Society, a gritty and realistic portrayal of life in the inner city that’s been lauded for its complex exploration of the social and moral issues present in urban Los Angeles life in the early '90s. Infamously, Tupac was originally slated to star in the film, but a disagreement and eventual altercation led to the rapper spending 15 days in jail instead.

In addition to discussing Dear Mama, Hughes and Miller celebrate Hip-Hop 50, touching on the filmmaker’s beginnings in making music videos and how hip-hop has influenced pop culture and society at large.

” Hip-hop did something that no other medium and art form in the history of mankind and womankind did, which is [that it] completely consumed everything in its path. And, you saw how, in the last five years – it was happening for 30, 40 years – it became the number one selling genre of music because it literally envelops everything in its path and nothing can survive hip-hop’s path because it just adopts in. So R&B became hip-hop. Rock became hip-hop. Country became hip-hop. So you can’t compete with that.”

06 Apr 2018Saba - "Care for Me"00:10:39
Care for Me is about the woozy mix of city and family and friends and mental health ... and grief. It’s about needing care and needing self-care ... and grief, it’s about all this and more, but that grief is strong. And maybe it’s morbid to be so interested; maybe it’s emotional rubbernecking, gawping at the wreckage of someone else’s life. It’s a grief we hope to avoid and yet a grief we can't help tasting. Jack White’s reverence for classic music of the past is still a big part of who is he here on Boarding House Reach; he’s just shifting focus with a more manic and multi-faceted approach. That’s not weird. That’s smart.

29 Mar 2024The Aces' Cristal Ramirez's Spark Is Paramore's Riot!00:35:43

Today on Consequence of Sound, we are sharing an episode from The Spark Parade.

The Aces' front woman Cristal Ramirez was obsessed with Paramore's Riot! from the moment it was first played for her. The energy and lyrics both blew her pre-teen mind, but it was Hayley Williams who really caught her attention. A flame-haired teenager who lead a successful rock band in a male-dominated industry, Williams provided endless inspiration for Ramirez as her own musical aspirations took flight. As a dedicated Paramore fan, she's always seen the band as a beacon of light and a force for good in the world.

If you like what you hear, please take the time to like, review, and subscribe to The Spark Parade on your preferred podcast provider, and keep up to date with all our series by following the Consequence Podcast Network.

24 May 2018CHVRCHES - "Love Is Dead"00:08:40
Love Is Dead is a collection of songs about grand concepts like openness, heartbreak, disappointment, and generally growing up. But without the benefit of specificity or a sharp perspective, the result is that it may be the most impersonal record that CHVRCHES have ever produced. Pain without specificity sounds a lot like numbness.

16 Apr 2018A Perfect Circle - "Eat the Elephant"00:05:15
Essential for fans and sporadically thrilling for newcomers, Eat the Elephant is the kind of reunion record that most bands would kill for. 16 Aug 2018Mitski - "Be the Cowboy"00:09:06
Mitski makes music like honesty isn’t something to be afraid of. The songs on Be the Cowboy are full of introspective, stomach-pummeling lyrics sung so steadily and unblinking that they gain even more power in their understatedness. The album shows that love and loss can be grand and small at the same time. That two minutes is more than enough time to melt down emotion into a pure concentrate and nearly drown yourself in it. That every moment can be a epic love story, that every heartbreak can be as hard and small as a pearl and just as coveted.

20 Dec 2023Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse Directors: Consequence's 2023 Filmmakers of the Year00:41:06

Creating a sequel to the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was no small feat. However, the directorial trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K.Thompson created a synergy that is already having audiences beg for more. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is simply the most visually stunning and action-packed superhero film of the year -- if not in years -- while also managing to create an intense story with emotional depth. Thus, it makes sense that these three are Consequence's 2023 Filmmakers of the Year -- but they aren't the only ones who deserve credit.

Editorial Director Ben Kaye chatted with Dos Santos, Powers, and Thompson about how it took three directors and over 1,000 crew members to make this epic entry in the Spider-Man canon, AI, and sequel rumors. Take a listen for all this and more on this latest episode of Consequence UNCUT, and read the full story on Consequence.

16 Feb 2018Car Seat Headrest - "Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)"00:08:55
The past is a funny and fickle thing; even as it shrinks to the size of a speck in the rear-view mirror, its contours shift and its lessons zoom into razor-sharp focus. Such is the experience of listening to Twin Fantasy, a sprawling, loosely conceptual rock album that reimagines an earlier effort Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo recorded at 19 on a cheap laptop.

Sparkle Hard is at once his most sonically adventurous and structurally tight set of music in over a decade and easily stands among his most rewarding work with the Jicks. It's the same primordial rock and roll that drove the band almost 30 years ago, this time buffeted by the lessons they learned over the intervening years in their other bands.

16 Aug 2023Genesis Owusu Finds the Light on his Sophomore Album, STRUGGLER00:23:26

Genesis Owusu is a genre-bending Ghanaian-Australian artist who is taking the world by storm with his eclectic music and thought-provoking lyrics.

In this episode of Consequence Uncut, Editorial Coordinator Jonah Kruger sits down with Genesis to talk about his sophomore album, STRUGGLER. He dives into the concept album’s influences, ranging from Albert Camus to Kafka, and his collaboration with visual artist Lisa Reihana.

StTRUGGLER will be released on August 18 (learn more here) before a World Tour across North America, Europe and Australia that begins in October (get tickets here).

05 Jun 2018Lykke Li - "so sad so sexy"00:07:43
so sad so sexy demonstrates Lykke Li’s refined prowess for communicating romantic turmoil, and the synth-heavy instrumentation of the record gives the indie-pop artist a new musical space within which to operate. Li understands how to use this electronic ambiance to her advantage, as the album is full of memorable hooks and sleek production. Although the trap-influenced style wears thin at times, so sad so sexy is a superb reinvention of Lykke Li.

08 Nov 2023Eight Boom-Bap Classics Paul Wall and Termanology Think Every Music Fan Should Own00:48:29

Paul Wall is best known for emerging from the breakout Houston scene with his verse on Mike Jones’ hit “Still Tippin’” and his own “Sittin’ Sidewayz,” while Termanology cut his teeth on the East Coast after being discovered by DJ Premier. On paper, they couldn’t come from more different backgrounds. With their recently released second collaborative album, Start Finish Repeat, however, the duo has once again demonstrated how they bring out the best in each other over boom bap production from the likes of Statik Selektah, Large Professor, and Diamond D.

For this episode Conseqeunce UNCUT, News Editor Eddie Fu speaks to Paul Wall and Termanology as they pick eight of their most essential boom bap albums. We find out how Paul Wall was drawn to New York rappers like Nas and GZA while growing up and learn how Termanology drew influence from Big Pun, Mobb Deep, and Black Thought.

10 Jul 2018Immortal - "Northern Chaos Gods"00:07:37
Northern Chaos Gods, the ninth studio album from black metal legends Immortal and first in nearly a decade, takes listeners through a frostbitten landscape of, well, chaos. The only source of warmth comes through Demonaz Doom Occulta’s vocals, which are so intense that it sounds like he’s breathing fire all over the studio.

01 Mar 2018Moby - "Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt"00:05:20
After spending the last two years transforming his nightmare visions of our modern age and his internal agonies into razor wire post-punk, Moby is back in the business of electronic pop music. And what has poured out of him on his 15th studio album are equally dark visions rendered with music and performances that feel softer. Like the warm cushion of a goose down pillow as it settles on your face to suffocate you.

09 Oct 2023Jimmy Iovine Believes “Fame Has Replaced Great”00:29:46

Spend time on the internet and you’ll soon hear some variation on “the grind never stops.” But after nearly 50 years in the music industry, Jimmy Iovine, now 70, begs to differ: “Maybe there’s one person in their 80s or 90s that could be as effective and is in it as much as somebody who’s 40 or even 50, but I don’t want to be that person,” he says, “I want to experiment. I want to do a lot of things. I want to help people, but everywhere I’m involved has great CEOs in it. I’m not the CEO. The hook is not in my mouth. I spit out that hook.”

For the episode Conseqeunce UNCUT, Associate Editor Paolo Ragusa speaks to Jimmy Iovine about his relationship with Dre, the 2017 docu-series The Defiant Ones, which premiered on HBO and is now available to stream in full on Hulu, the state of music today, and his philosophy on life.

18 Jun 2018Chromeo - "Head Over Heels"00:08:28
There's no danger of Chromeo remaking their chosen genre in their own funky image, but there's also no danger of them releasing a bad record, either. The most dependable dance band of the 21st century continues its consistency streak on Head Over Heels, which contains enough radio-ready rump-shakers to earn a spot in your warm-weather playlist for this summer and a few more to come. If Chromeo can settle into their new California home and keep flipping through their ever-deepening Rolodex of potential collaborators, we'll be saying this again in a couple of years.

It'll also give you the chance to say you heard him when he was still, it seems, on the ascent towards the heights of his considerable powers. What a lucky time to own a record player.

09 Mar 2018David Byrne - "American Utopia"00:09:05
On American Utopia, David Byrne isn’t trying to make pop. He’s 65 years old, he’s got something to say, and he’s out of fucks to give. It’s a worthy effort from a living legend, full of songs that are at least interesting and at times breathtaking.
