04 May 2022 | Ep. 24 5 Techniques to Manage Stress in the College Search | 00:17:29
I have had many students sit in my office close to tears and some in the middle of a panic attack because they are so overwhelmed with their course work, extracurricular activities, family responsibilities, and worry that they won’t be successful or get into their dream college. As the student sat in my office crying, she told me she didn’t know how she was going to manage everything she had to do. Her AP tests were coming up soon, she was a student-athlete who spent every day at practice, at a game, or traveling for her sport, and in our previous conversations, I knew she had aspirations of attending a top college. She had gotten herself worked up to the point she was convinced she was never going to get into the college she wanted. The student, her parents, and I worked through multiple strategies to help them effectively manage their stress during their college search.

06 Jul 2022 | Ep. 33//Stop Comparing Yourself to Others in the College Search | 00:17:14
Teddy Roosevelt said ‘comparison is the thief of joy.” Today, I want you (and your student) to stop comparing yourself to others! All too often in my work, I have seen teenagers compare themselves to others. The comparison game is a dangerous one. It impacts mental health, self-image, and how students see themselves. As each semester ends, one of the most common things I hear is “What is my new GPA, and what is my new class rank after grades were finalized?”. Another common topic of discussion is “What was your score on your test–and that’s a standardized test – AP, SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc. We’re going to dive into ways students compare, why this is something we don’t want students to do and how we can encourage students to stop the comparison game. This show is for the confused college applicant and family to learn simple and effective strategies to help you find the BEST college for your student while having positive conversations.
