01 Apr 2025138. The Perfectionist’s PR Agency: Monitoring And Managing Perceptions00:17:03

If you believe you have to be perfect, you’ll end up spending a lot of time trying to manage how others perceive you.

Before you know it, you’re running a one-person PR agency - carefully curating every word, every email, every interaction to ensure you’re seen in the “right” way.

This relentless focus on perception management pulls you away from the actual work. It drains your energy, fuels overthinking, and ironically, makes you less effective.

In this episode, we’re diving into:
✅ Why perfectionists get stuck in perception management
✅ How this feeds the Low Confidence Cycle
✅ The hidden cost of avoiding risks and overthinking interactions
✅ How to shift your focus from looking confident to actually feeling confident

If you feel like you’re constantly on high alert, curating your every move, this episode will show you how to break free - so you can reclaim your time, energy, and confidence at work.

08 Apr 2025139. Giving Feedback And Having Difficult Conversations: It’s Not Their Feelings You’re Protecting - It’s Yours00:14:33

In this episode we’re talking about something that comes up all the time - avoiding difficult conversations because we don’t want to upset someone. You might tell yourself it’s about their feelings… but is it really?

In this episode, I’m breaking down the real reason we shy away from being direct, giving feedback, or speaking up - because we’re trying to protect ourselves from our own discomfort.

This episode is an invitation to be radically honest with yourself about what’s really holding you back - so you can start to move through it towards saying those difficult things clearly and kindly.

If you’ve ever fluffed around an issue, softened a message so much it lost all clarity, or avoided a conversation entirely… this one’s for you.

    You will learn:

    • Why telling yourself it’s about them is a trap

    • How to spot the real emotions you’re trying to avoid

    • What makes hard conversations harder (and what makes them easier)

    • The truth about control - and why you never really had it anyway!

  • How to step into clarity, kindness, and courage by telling yourself the truth first

  • 04 Feb 2025130. Staying Out Of Shame Shell Hell00:17:58

In this episode we discuss the concept of the 'shame shell' - a metaphor for the tendency to retreat into a state of shame and self-criticism when faced with our mistakes or weaknesses!

We explore the emotional consequences of retreating inside the shame shell and find out how it inhibits your growth and your confidence.

This episode will help you recognise your own tendencies around the shame and remind you about the choices you have when it comes to responding to setbacks.

    Here's what we cover:

    - The shame shell is a metaphor for retreating into a place of self-criticism, doubt and thinking because we got something wrong, we are wrong or bad as a person.

    - Being in the shame shell can lead to isolation and disconnection.

    - Self-criticism and self-doubt are common inside the shame shell.

    - Learning cannot occur effectively in a shame shell environment.

    - You have a choice about whether to get into a shame shell.

    - Recognising the shame shell can help in personal growth.

    - We challenge the belief that mistakes or weaknesses make you somehow unworthy or bad.

    - You can decide to respond differently to mistakes.

08 Sep 202359. Grow Your Professional Confidence with Confident at Work00:34:18

Do you want to feel more confident at work? Are you technically good at your job but find you privately lack the self-belief and confidence which should come with it? You've found the right place.

Every client I worked with was good at their job, but they still didn't feel as confident as they wanted. And they didn't really understand why.

After analysing data gathered over 100's of confidence coaching sessions; I saw the patterns. The data showed a particular set of habits and patterns when someone's confidence was lower and a particular set of habits and patterns of behaviour when when someones confidence was higher. I created the high and low confidence cycles as a visual summary - take a look here.

In this episode I share how the work I do with clients actually helps them feel more confident and how the Confident at Work course has been built to help anyone identify the habits and patterns currently keeping them in a low confidence cycle, and teach them how to rewire your brain to change those habits and feel more confident at work.

In this episode, we explore a common yet often private concern for professionals: worrying about what others think. In this episode we explore:

    Why We Worry:

    1. Social Nature: We’re wired to seek connection and acceptance, but has it gone too far?

    2. Low Confidence Cycle: Excessive worry can be a sign of a wider issue within a low confidence cycle.

    3. Fear of Rejection: Worry often stems from a fear of social or professional rejection; hear Anna grapple with a recent fear of rejection live.

    4. Overestimating Judgement: An interesting research study indicates we tend to overestimate how harshly others judge us!

    How to Stop:

    1. Identify Patterns: Take The Confidence Assessment to see if this is part of a larger issue.

    2. Verbalise: Acknowledge your actual fear to get understanding and perspective.

    3. It’s Not You, It’s Me: Determine if your worries are theirs, or yours?

30 Aug 2024110. How To Stop Avoiding Confrontation00:20:46

In this episode, we dive into a common struggle many professionals face - avoiding confrontation. If you've ever caught yourself saying, "I hate confrontation," or find yourself consistently sidestepping tough conversations, this episode is for you. We explore what you’re really avoiding when you shy away from confrontation, why you might be doing it, and most importantly, how to stop.

    Key Points Covered:

    1. Understanding What You’re Avoiding:

      • We explore the underlying fears and concerns that lead to avoiding confrontation.
      • Consideration of what confrontation means to you and what you gain or avoid by not engaging in it.
    2. The Opposite of ‘Avoid’:

      • What you have to go towards; resolution, discomfort, pursuing the right action, the part of you that wants to shy away, and someone's honest response.
    3. Coaching Questions to Reflect On:

      • What's happening now? Identify your current behavior and avoidance patterns.
      • Why is it a problem? Understand the impact of avoidance on your life and work.
      • What happens if you don't change? Consider the long-term consequences of continuing to avoid confrontation.
      • What would you like to have happen? Define your desired outcome in dealing with confrontation.
      • What's your plan? Commit to specific actions to address confrontation.
  • Practical Examples:

    • We discuss real-life scenarios where avoidance of confrontation causes more harm than good, providing both employee and senior-level examples.
    • These examples illustrate the consequences of avoiding confrontation and how addressing it can lead to better outcomes.

26 Jul 2024105. How To Stop Using Your Analytical Skills Against Yourself00:19:18

This week we're exploring the hidden dangers of turning your analytical skills inward.

As professionals, you might pride yourself on your sharp analytical and critical thinking skills. These abilities honed through years of education and experience might make you an expert in your field, but what happens when you turn those skills on yourself?

In this episode we explore how the very skills that make us successful at work can erode our confidence when they're misapplied.

You'll meet Janet, a brilliant lawyer, who like many of us, has used her analytical prowess to excel in her career. However, she was also unknowingly using these skills to scrutinise, criticise and perfext herself, leading to self-doubt and anxiety.

Here’s a sneak peek of what we discussed:

    • Hypercritical Self-Analysis: Janet was adept at spotting flaws in contracts but applied the same hypercritical lens to her own value and contributions. This constant self-scrutiny left her feeling inadequate despite her undeniable success.
    • Endless Analysing: Janet would mentally dissect every conversation and email, a habit great for her legal work but disastrous for her personal confidence.

The good news? Janet learned to recognise when she was misapplying her skills and developed strategies to stop doing it! She discovered that she could still be highly analytical at work without turning those skills inward.

Are you doing the same? Are your critical thinking skills boosting your career but undermining your self-confidence? Listen to this episode to find out.

In this episode, I sit down with Mary Ann Seighart to discuss her bestselling book, The Authority Gap: Why Women Are Still Taken Less Seriously Then Men, And What We Can Do About It. We explore the evidence and research the book highlights, revealing how the authority gap shows up in our workplaces and its impact on our confidence.

    We cover:

    • The often shocking research on how gender bias persists in professional settings, sometimes unconsciously via the authority gap
    • Why the authority gap is the mother of all authority gaps!
    • The ways the authority gap undermines confidence, particularly for women
    • Practical steps we can take as individuals, colleagues, and organisations to close the authority gap
    • Why 50/50 gender representation in workplaces isn’t enough to achieve true equality without closing the authority gap

I highly recommend reading The Authority Gap or watching Mary Ann’s TED Talk on this crucial issue.

24 Jan 2025128. Oops, I Did It Again: Embracing Your Weaknesses 00:17:00

In this episode, I’m talking about a topic that’s close to my heart: how embracing your weaknesses can lead to real confidence.

For so many of us, there’s a strong urge to hide our weaknesses and imperfections - I’ve certainly been there. But what I’ve learned - and what I share in this episode - is that acknowledging your weaknesses without shame isn’t a sign of failure; it’s a powerful step toward self-acceptance and the freedom that leads to true self-confidence.

We’ll explore how being honest about our struggles can deepen your connection with yourself and others. You’ll hear why confidence isn’t about being flawless but about building a supportive relationship with yourself - one that allows for both growth and embracing your weaknesses.

    Key Takeaways:

    - Admitting your weaknesses is essential for authentic confidence.

    - Hiding imperfections can create feelings of shame and inadequacy.

    - Accepting your flaws can be liberating and empowering.

    - Being open about your struggles can encourage others to do the same.

    - Confidence isn’t about perfection - it’s rooted in self-acceptance.

    - How acknowledging your weaknesses actually creates the right environment for development and personal growth.

25 Aug 202357. Wanting Life To Be Easy And Neat, Not Messy And Difficult! 00:21:34
I want everything to be easy and neat...not messy and difficult. And yet, I choose to do things again and again which are hard. Which test my capability and develop me.   When I reflected on this idea later and I realised I am the same. I want a life that's easy and neat. I want to win all the time but without being exposed to failure and I want to make waves in the world without the potential for disappointment. I do not want life to be messy and difficult but I am choosing a life that will inevitably be messy and difficult, at least in parts. This week I am knee deep in the tech for the digital confidence course I'm making and I spend half my time wondering why it's messy and difficult and the other half realising that is how it is going to be if I am choosing a challenge. Take The Quiz: Are You Stuck In A Low Confidence Cycle? Book our next free Grow Your Professional Confidence Masterclass. Sign up to join our free training: Grow Your Confidence In 2025

In this episode we discuss the pervasive issue of 'background babble' - the constant mental chatter that can undermine confidence and mental clarity at work.

We explore its impact on self-doubt, decision-making, and emotional well-being and explore the strategies that combat the mental noise.

Background babble is that persistent internal dialogue that influences your mood, decisions, and your confidence levels at work.

Unchecked background babble increases self-doubt and uncertainty, drains your mental energy and clarity and can be emotionally exhausting.

Even if you have experienced background babble your whole career, support from a professional can help to reduce it so you can have clearer mind and improved confidence.

09 Aug 2024107. The Myth of "Faking It"00:15:11

In this episode we take on one of the most widely accepted yet misguided piece of career advice: "Fake it till you make it." After coming across this advice in a Google search, Anna unpacks why this approach not only doest work but is potentially harmful to anyone trying to build genuine confidence in the workplace.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Debunking the Myth: Faking it does not lead to authentic confidence. Instead, it merely masks insecurities and delays the process of developing real self-assurance.
    • Faking It vs. Authentic Confidence: Using examples from relationships and social media, we illustrate how faking confidence is similar to pretending in other areas of life—it may fool others, but it doesn't create genuine feelings or results.
    • The Real Path to Confidence: Anna reminds listeners that true confidence comes from within, built through self-awareness, experience and personal growth, not through pretending.

Take The Confidence Assessment to identify where you stand in your confidence journey and receive personalised advice for building real, lasting confidence that isn't fake.
