14 Mar 2017 | Episode 19: Dan Tudor & Jeremy Tiers On The Problem With Most Campus Tours | 00:59:55
For all the time, money and effort spent on getting your prospects to visit campus, once they are actually there, things sometimes fall flat.
Such was the case with Dan and his family's recent visit to a college campus. It was a fine campus, with an enthusiastic tour guide, who gave out lots of information about the college.
And that is where the problem starts...
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, Dan Tudor gives listeners seven key observations about what went right, and what went wrong, during that visit they took.
Then, he welcomes today's guest, admissions expert Jeremy Tiers joins the podcast to talk about how admissions departments and coaches can improve the "product" they put on for their visitors. His advice is based on years of research as Admissions Director for Tudor Collegiate Strategies, as well as his time as a college basketball coach.
It's a fascinating discussion that will give you direction on how to identify the bad things you may be doing during your visits, as well as what to do differently in the future.

All sides, both for and against the idea of letting college student-athletes earning money from outside marketing opportunities, have an opinion as it heads towards a final decision sometime in 2021 by the NCAA.
In preparation for this major focus, we wanted to talk to some of the individuals involved in the debate so that college coaches can understand all sides of the issue.

17 Oct 2017 | Episode 35: Recruiting Inner-City Prospects to Small, Rural Campuses | 00:51:56
Many college coaches from rural or suburban campuses, with a largely white population, hesitate to try and recruit inner-city student-athletes to their programs.
"Why would they want to come here? It's so different from where they grew up."
"There's nothing to do here compared to the city they're from."
"They probably don't have the grades to be admitted here, because their high school isn't in a very good area."
Sound familiar?
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, we talk to Miles Smith, the head men's basketball coach at Johnson State College in northern Vermont. He coaches at a small, liberal arts school in a small, mostly white college town up in the mountains a little more than an hour outside of Burlington.
And all Coach Smith does is consistently recruit inner-city kids to come to his little school in Vermont and play basketball for him.
So what's his secret? That's what today's show is all about. Prepare to have an honest, creative conversation about recruiting, race, and college athletics. We don't solve all of the country's problems in this episode, but we'll give you some new approaches and fresh thinking on an often difficult-to-navigate topic we all seem to be hearing a lot about these days.

Thanks, Coach. Oh and by the way, a coach asked me recently who the band is that we use for all of our music on the show. The band is called The Mob, and they were featured on Episode 23 (one of our most popular) when we talked to a rock-n-roll musician who had to leave the world of Top 40 hits and dive into a sales career. If you haven't listened to that one, go back and listen now. It's great! (And, enjoy the music...classic 1970's stuff!)

19 Mar 2021 | Episode 108: Are College Athletic Departments Ready for NIL? | 00:42:29
In this episode, we talk with journalist Andy Wittry, creator of the popular Out of Bounds online column focusing on issues surrounding college athletics, about the upcoming Name/Image/Likeness (NIL) initiative that will allow student-athletes to profit commercially during their time as a college athlete.
The question we ask Wittry, who has done extensive research on the topic and how different athletic departments are preparing to handle it, to try and answer the question, "are college athletic departments ready for NIL?"
We focus on an investigative article by Wittry which explored that question. His findings, and our podcast discussion, can help athletic departments and coaches learn from some early mistakes colleges have made to ensure they move forward as strongly and confidently as possible.

09 Mar 2019 | Episode 67: When Is the Right Time to Leave College Coaching? | 00:39:29
It's a tough question:
"When is the right time to leave college coaching?"
It's a question that gets thought about frequently, but discussed openly among coaches rarely. Why? Pride, ego, and job preservation. If your staff or athletic director knew you were thinking about leaving the profession, they might assume you've just lost the heart and drive to succeed in the job, and look for a replacement.
But the question itself is important. This is your life, Coach, and being in charge of what you do with that life is up to you.
On today's episode, we talk to former Division I assistant coach Chris Passmore, who left his job as a college coach a few years ago and has found a side of living that he hadn't known before.
His story isn't supposed to apply to all coaches, and we're not suggesting coaching is something you need to leave right now - or ever. But we thought it would be helpful to walk through some of the questions and topics that we raise in this conversation, just to ensure you're in the right place professionally.

30 Apr 2021 | Coach Gabe Bolton on Building a Successful Program Your Own Way | 00:50:39
Frank Sinatra sang it loudly: "I did it my way!"

Over the years, he's used some unorthodox methods to build a winner, and create a life for himself and his family that might just be the envy of a lot of coaches who listen to this episode.

20 Nov 2023 | Episode 159: Coaching & Recruiting Lessons From Ted Lasso | 00:36:25
If you've watched it, and you're a college coach, you probably love Ted Lasso.
The AppleTV series was a huge hit, mainly because of its cast of characters lead by actor Jason Sudekis' portrayal of an American football coach being hired by an English soccer team to be their new leader. Hilarity - along with some drama, self-discovery, and plenty of mishaps - ensues.
But for college coaches, are there lessons to be learned?
Former college coach and current author and speaker John "Coach Bru" Brubaker returns to talk about what those lessons are following the release of his new book, "The Lasso Way" (which belongs in every college coach's library, in our opinion).

Early recruiting has been an ongoing debate around college athletics for years.

Our guest today is Rob Harris, head women's lacrosse coach at Davenport University in Michigan. He has a unique perspective on this as a successful college coach at many levels, as well as a director of a club lacrosse program. He see's the debate from both sides, and talks about his thoughts on the new rules.
Coach Harris is also a featured speaker at the upcoming 2017 National Collegiate Recruiting Conference, where he will be talking about "Communicating with This Generation of Recruits". He discusses those principles on this episode, as well.

Coach, do you enjoy getting into the details of the monetary offer you or your college is going to be able to offer a prospect you're recruiting?

We'll take the mystery out of the process, and give you a firm understanding of what we see working best for coaches who are taking the lead in discussing this aspect of the decision with their prospect.

11 Mar 2024 | Episode 166: Pushing Back on Your Prospect's Push Back | 00:22:09
There are several common instances that college recruiters at all level face some very common, very challenging 'push back' questions from their prospects.
You know the ones: Things are going nicely, everything's on schedule, and then your prospects pushes back on what you want, when you want it, and how you want the process to go. Which is fine, because they're going through their difficult decision process, and they need some room to think, right?
O.K., maybe a little. But we still want coaches to be in control.
On this episode, we talk about some common push back coaches are getting, and how to respond to it all in a better way. We hope it helps!

But could there be times where you need to slow down and make them feel like you understand what their concerns or questions really are?
Yes.
At least that's the advice of our guest on today's show, Mark Giganti. He is, in my opinion, one of the greatest sales professionals and trainers in the country. I've known him for close to 25 years, and he has been one of the people that has helped shape my foundational understanding of sales, marketing and effective communication.
Today, he shares some specific advice for coaches who want to make sure they're guiding the prospect the right way. I know you'll find it valuable.
After the podcast, make sure you register for this Summer's 2017 National Collegiate Recruiting Conference in North Carolina. It's going to be fantastic, and we want you there.

15 Feb 2022 | Episode 122: Why Money-Based Recruiting Decisions Are Trending Up (and What to Do About It) | 00:42:33
In case you haven't noticed, money - how much your college costs, what kind of scholarship you're going to give your prospect, and the affordability of your school - is a topic of conversation with your prospects that is trending up.
Why? A bunch of factors that you have no control over: Growing inflation worries, job uncertainty, the financial impact of the pandemic, and just a general feeling that life (including college) is getting too expensive.
In this episode of the College Recruiting Weekly podcast, Dan Tudor explains the trend he's seeing out on campuses and in conversations coaches are having with parents, as well as recommended tweaks to a recruiting approach that coaches should consider taking.
* Note: Much of this conversation builds off of a previous money-related podcast episode we did in Episode 65, so you may want to listen to that first.
