04 Jan 2024 | DC Fast Charging in 2024: NEVI - Mercedes-Benz - P-FJ and More | Coast-to-Coast EVs #5 | 01:21:11
Our first Coast-to-Coast EVs stream of 2024 covers value for money in DC fast charging: how much is being spent and what should we expect in terms of: A) customer experience, and B) bang for our buck when the sites are funded from federal or state sources? In case you missed it, Steve was out and about visiting NEVI-funded sites over the holidays - here: https://youtu.be/D_YEIe6NjmA - while Walter has been diligently tracking nascent networks from Pilot-Flying J, Mercedes-Benz, and Race-Trac (browse his tNAC channel reports here: https://www.youtube.com/@thenetworkarchitectchannel9507). Out west, Eric has strong opinions on what has been installed in California (what do you mean you're not shocked?!) and how funds have been spent in his home state, which typically leads EV infrastructure trends in the U.S. Peruse his work at the News Coulomb channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@newscoulomb3705 Email plugandplayev@gmail.com with EV news story suggestions and topics for future discussion. 18 Jan 2024 | Cold Weather EV Charging & Setting DCFC Standards | Coast-to-Coast EVs 6 | 01:33:44
As winter descends on much of North America, the Coast-to-Coast EVs crew unpacks cold weather EV charging and DC fast charging site standards. From the frozen woes at Tesla Superchargers and other sites in Chicagoland to rental and rideshare drivers exacerbating slow charging sessions, we try to separate the facts from the inevitable sensationalism that such scenarios breed. Our returning guest Darren Orange brings some data and an experienced Tesla driver's perspective to contextualize the hyperbolic headlines. After warming up with winter topics, we shift to setting higher standards for DC fast charging. Special guest Candice Jurick speaks to the consideration of charging station safety and accessibility, especially in remote and rural areas, while Walter talks about using Eric's site review template (NCSRM = News Coulomb Site Review Model) to grade some of the latest Pilot-Flying J charging stations. You can also now listen at your leisure later on (and catch up on past episodes) on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/60a0rh4... - and other streaming platforms, as we got set up on Acast this week. 15 Feb 2024 | IONNA Unveiled: Which Charging Networks Will We Love? | Coast to Coast EVs 8 | 01:24:36
Join Eric, Walter, and some British bloke for our fortnightly live stream on EVs and infrastructure. For Valentine's Day, we considered which DCFC options we expect to love this year, which newcomers are attracting our gaze (hello, IONNA...), and which we might just have to break up with. This comes almost a year on from Tesla introducing Magic Dock and prompting the question that Eric subsequently asked in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRLUxvDoM-c -- what does it take to be a national public fast charging network? 29 Feb 2024 | Station Location: Where Do You Want to Charge? | Coast to Coast EVs 9 | 01:33:05
Join Eric, Walter, and Steve for another fortnightly fast charge on EVs and infrastructure, this time covering the best (and appropriate) locations for DC fast charging. In the wake of IONNA announcing its early plans, we pondered on the last live stream where the 30,000+ stalls, which equates to several thousands new charging stations for just one network. Toss in new Tesla Superchargers, more EVgo and Electrify America, then potentially hundreds of new charging providers and we have to ask: where will these chargers go? Chapters: 0:00 - Start 1:22 - Intro 2:03 - In the News: Honda Prologue Arrives 13:22 - Ultium Platform & Chevy Silverado EV Rollout 15:54 - Viewer Questions & Comments 20:26 - Location, Location, Location: Where Do We Want to Charge? 28:16 - The Importance of Electrify America and Walmart 29:48 - Grocery Stores and EV Charging 34:30 - Guest Intro: Jacob/ArtiePenguin1 35:45 - Exploring DC Fast Charging in New Mexico 36:15 - Jacob's 2022 Kia #EV6 37:45 - New Mexico Charging Maps 40:30 - Tesla Superchargers in NM 41:22 - Chargers Coming Soon in New Mexico 44:34 - The Future of Francis Energy Charging Sites 47:11 - The Impact of Heat on DC Fast Chargers 54:25 - Love's & TCA Truck Stop Charging 59:40 - Viewer Comments & Questions 1:00:28 - Charging at Hotel Locations 1:14:57 - Different Levels of Location: Gas Station vs. Truck Stop | Grocery Store vs. Walmart 1:21:29 - Matching Dwell Time to Site Usage 1:29:40 - J3400 and 277V / 48A Level 2 Charging 1:30:05 - Closing Comments + Plans The beauty of EV charging is that it is passive, so the driver can walk away and do something else while the vehicle "refuels". The challenge then becomes matching power and expense of install to an appropriate site host, which is the main topic we'll cover in this week's stream. We're joined by Jacob from the ArtiePenguin1 Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ArtiePenguin1 , who shares his travels around his state in a Kia EV6, what hardware and site types he's seeing, and explores the charging maps of New Mexico. Special guest John Markowitz, Head of Emobility at the New York Power Authority, joins Eric, Walter, and Steve to discuss building out one of the nation's largest regional fast charging networks. In a week when the International Auto Show hits New York City and spring travel is about to get underway, EV infrastructure is about to be tested again. State-level networks like NYPA's EVolve NY have emerged as an important piece of the charging puzzle, opening up access to routes that the national players haven't yet focused on. This conversation covers the planning, difficulties, and opportunities of building out fast charging infrastructure in a state with more than 2,000 miles of road designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC). 18 Jul 2024 | Will Charging Infrastructure Become Overbuilt? | New DCFC Partnerships | Coast-to-Coast EVs 19 | 01:22:05
How well does the EV charging infrastructure in North America serve the market in 2024? With EV adoption breaking 10% of new vehicle sales and used EV sales strong, are we close to overburdening the public charging stations available, or in the pipeline for the near future? This installment of Coast-to-Coast EVs focuses on a discussion we had in June, where the idea of "overbuilding" charging infrastructure was raised. It generated some vibrant debate in the comments and we promised to unpack the idea further, so here's your chance! The discussion considers all angles of the charging buildout in the United States and Canada to answer a simple question: are we at risk of building more chargers than we need? We also cover a busy week of new charging partnerships, from Toyota swelling the IONNA ranks to eight OEMs to BP Pulse becoming the latest entrant to increasingly crowded parking lots at Simon Properties and Mercedes-Benz juicing up I-5 with new Alpitronic 400 kW Hyperchargers at Starbucks locations.
