10 Jan 2023547 - Why I don't Eat Green Bananas Anymore00:26:36

What do eating green bananas and decluttering have in common? More than one would think! Join Kathi Lipp and writer, educator, and fellow recovering green banana eater Amy Betters-Midtvedt as they laugh and discuss their way through topics such as:

  • How to figure out what we like and not settle all the time.
  • How to not get stuck in a poverty mindset.
  • Why it’s okay to order an ice cream sundae just for yourself!

And as promised by Kathi in the episode, here’s a copy of Amy’s Green Banana Article for your enjoyment and edification.

There was a time I just ate bananas.
Like any banana. I’d buy them put them in my lunch and eat them. Green, light green, yellow, brown I didn’t pay much attention.
Then one day I was driving to my awesome college job at Gap kids, and I took a bite of my greenish banana.
I realized it wasn’t good.
As a matter of fact every time I ate a greenish banana I didn’t really like it.
Suddenly I realized I didn’t like green bananas. And I didn’t have to eat any banana I didn’t like.
I was a legit grown up I could pick the color of bananas I would eat.
I rolled down my window and SPIT OUT the gross banana in my mouth and to this day I’ve never eaten a banana with a grace of green.
Life is too short for green bananas.
This life lesson has served me well in a million areas of my life.
With friendships, jobs, picking out jeans and how I spend my time on a Saturday. The applications are endless.
Tonight I share this lesson with you.
You don’t have to eat green bananas either my friends.
Only eat bananas you really enjoy.
Pass it on.

Full of stories and humor along with facts, tips and lists, Kathi offers a down-to-earth guide that will show you how to face the unexpected with confidence, relying on God’s strength and plan rather than giving in to fear and anxiety.

Her step-by-step plan is easy to implement and will help anyone become a better steward of their resources as well as be the neighbor who can help in a crisis rather than needing help themselves. 13 Jun 2014103 - Being a Part of the Bad Mom's Club with Erin Macpherson00:24:40

It’s easy to put your worth in your children’s failures and successes. In this week’s episode, Kathi and guest, Erin MacPherson, author of the Christian Mama’s Guide series, discuss being a part of the Bad Moms Club. While most moms are striving to be the best mom she can be, she is usually riddled with doubt, guilt and worry. If this sounds like you, take heart, you aren’t alone.

Kathi and Erin discuss ways to get through this journey of motherhood from birth through young adulthood. Some of the highlights include:

  • “Don’t judge your parenting on one bad day!”- One bad day doesn’t undo all that parenting that you’ve poured into your kid/s.
  • “Find your people that will still be a fan of your kid even when he/she doesn’t make the best decision.”- When our child has royally messed up, there is something about another adult who you admire seeing something besides “future adult delinquent” in your child that will give you hope.
  • “Don’t put your faith in the sheep, put it in the Shepherd.”-  We base the outcome of our lives on the actions of our children. Wrong. Our hope is only in God.

If you are in need of some encouragement through your mom walk, this one is for you. After you listen, comment below on what struck a cord with you the most. You’ll be entered to win a copy for you and a friend of Kathi’s new book, I Need Some Help Here! Help for When Your Kids Don’t Go According to Plan. In fact, two winners will win a copy for her and a friend!

19 Sep 2014118 - Playground Relationships with Erin MacPherson00:20:48

Have you ever felt ashamed at the playground? Have you worried that your kids are the only ones playing Ninja Warrior while the others swing peacefully? Have you felt like you just can’t measure up as a mom? This week, Kathi and Erin discuss the reaction to Erin’s new blog post entitled “I’m Worried About Our Girls” and the ways that parents can help their kids build strong, healthy relationships with other kids.

Knowing that every mom has felt shame, worry and stress about playground behavior– and that every mom earnestly seeks what’s best for their children– we openly discuss:

* How little girls can respond to wild boys on a playground.

* The difference between a dangerous situation and a situation that a child can take care of on his or her own.

* How moms can get rid of the shame they feel when their children misbehave.

* How to communicate to our kids that God created both genders lovingly and intentionally– and that neither is inherently “good” or “bad.”

Listen in and then share your own playground experiences in the comments below. One winner will get his or her choice of one of Erin’s books! Plus, check out the “Download” section below to get Erin’s playground toolkit for girls.

My friend and speaker, Michele Cushatt hasn’t had the prettiest life. It has been down right hard and the things God have called her to haven’t always been pretty. Michele has handled the not so pretty with such grace that I wanted her to speak about her experiences because no matter how ugly, she always inspires me. I think she’ll inspire you too.

In this episode of So Here’s the Thing, we discuss how following God isn’t always easy. We deal with some of the tough questions like:

  • Should I be a working mom or stay-at-home mom?
  • If God has called me to this, shouldn’t it be easy?
  • Why do some decisions have only comprises for answers?
  • How can I even think of reinventing my life with all of the responsibilities I already have?
  • How can/do I say NO to the wrong things so I can say YES to the right things?

After listening, tell me how you have reinvented a part of your life whether it be your work, the way you juggle the needs of your family, your ministry or the relationships with your extended family. Two people will win pack of books from me- The Cure for the Perfect Life (being released in August!) and Praying God’s Word for Your Life.

26 Jul 2014109 - Mentoring Moms with Stephanie Shott00:18:33

When it comes to being a mom, have you ever felt like you wish someone would just tell you what to do? (Or at least talk you down after your kid has told you that he wishes Jake’s mom was his real mother?)

My dear friend Stephanie Shott joined us this week to discuss mentoring, a topic that is near and dear to her heart as she lacked a true mentor and community when she was a teenage/single/unsaved mom. She started the Mom Initiative specifically to help women be the mentors other moms need. And guess what, she shares the secrets with us today.

Some of the things we discuss:

  • Mentoring makes us better women
  • Great mentoring isn’t difficult!
  • Why mentoring is so important
  • REAL friends can be our mentors

When you are in the thick of it, knowing someone is there for you makes all the difference. We shouldn’t do this mothering things alone friends. Take this first step to learn how to find your tribe and your mentors.

31 Jul 2018315 - The Clutter Free Move00:23:12

Tonya has just lived my nightmare; not only did she move, she moved into a smaller house.

You would think that this would have sent her into a corner, rocking back and forth, but not Tonya. As the leader of Clutter Free Academy on Facebook Tonya has learned more than a thing or two about how to do life Clutter Free - including moving all of her earthly possessions.

And now, Tonya and I will share everything we've learned about moving in the midst of getting rid of clutter.

In this info-filled interview, you will learn how to
• make decisions about what to bring and what to get rid of
• change your attitude about keeping stuff "just in case"
• give things away with an attitude of abundance

After the interview, I asked Tonya to share with me her 3 rules for holding a yard sale/giveaway. Here is what Tonya encourages you to state:

  1. No Holds: Your objective is to get rid of stuff, not to establish layaway programs.)
  2. No Negotiating: This will considerably lessen your stress on the day. Price things to move!
  3. No Give-Backs: Once you take it, it's yours. Tonya had her couch returned 3 times because people failed to measure their space or the couch. Eventually, they ended up taking it to the dump - what a waste - especially since the right buyer may have stopped by at some point while the couch was on a field trip.

I’m thrilled to have Tonya back on the show! Join us if you are planning a move, or ever plan on moving - you will thank me!

Kathi sits down with Jami Amerine, author of “Sacred Ground, Sticky Floors,” to talk about one of her blog posts that went viral over night. Jami shares the positive and negative reactions to this “rant” as she calls it, when she realized she didn’t want her kids to go into the world not having compassion for others.

Jami says the idea popped into her head shortly after her last foster child was placed in her home. “God showed me it wasn’t all about me…in the midst of all of this…I was in an if-then relationship with Jesus. If I do this…then you’ll do this.”

Kathi and Jami share an in depth conversation about how the shift happened with Jami going from an if-then relationship with God to a relationship of knowing God loved her no matter what she was or wasn’t doing.

In this episode of “So Here’s the Thing” Kathi and Erin talk to Jen about her book, “Interrupted: When Jesus Wrecks Your Comfortable Christianity” and discuss how that one simple prayer led her to flip her life upside down… and do everything from serving the poor to letting HGTV invade her home.

Tell us in the comments below how Jen’s experience of being interrupted has inspired you to pray for a holy passion or what is keeping you in your comfortable Christianity. Two winners will be randomly chosen and will receive two copies of Interrupted.

17 Oct 2014122 - One Word to Describe Motherhood with Leslie Ludy00:19:42

What is one word you would use to describe your motherhood?

Kathi said overwhelming.  Erin said chaotic.  Leslie Ludy, our guest, said neither have to be part of your parenting story.  Leslie put off having kids for a long time as she feared all the horror stories.  She didn’t want to lose the wonderful love story that she had built by adding kids to the mix.  But when her kids came, life may not have been simple (her oldest son had acid reflux) but it was wonderful. In this podcast, she tells women how they can:

  • gather their community,
  • change their attitudes,
  • and realize God is building them,

as they partake in the joyous, exciting and sometimes crazy ride that is motherhood.

When you are feeling overwhelmed as a mom, what is one thing you do to get yourself back on track? Share a tip below for your chance to win a book from Set Apart Motherhood.
