On another fantastic Mock Draft Monday on the Climbing The Pocket YouTube Channel, Dave and I decided to go through the draft based on what we thought was best for this team, but we also still drafted a little bit based on how this organization would draft. Littered through this are high upside athletes and trades that benefit the Vikings this year and next. Round 1, Pick 27 (Via Baltimore): EDGE Gregory Rousseau, Miami We had the Vikings move down from 14 to 27 in exchange for 131, 207, and a second-round selection next year and the Vikings ended up selecting a player likely to go in the top 15 with Gregory Rousseau. Round 3, Pick 78: S Jevon Holland, Oregon With safety being a major need with the uncertainty at the position this year and after 2021, the Vikings take a player out of Oregon in Jevon Holland who can do a little bit of everything. Standing 6’1″ and 196 lbs, Holland can play everywhere including the slot as a nickel cornerback. Round 3, Pick 90: WR D’Wayne Eskridge, Western Michigan Every year, I fall in love with a prospect or two. Last year, it was DL Jason Strowbridge out of North Carolina, and this year it’s Western Michigan WR D’Wayne Eskridge. If he was 6’1″ instead of 5’9″, Round 4, Pick 118: DT Alim McNeill, North Carolina State While the Vikings had a top 3 offense in yardage, their defense was far from it and it started on the defensive line. Missing both Hunter and Pierce was crippling from the start. Round 4, Pick 124: DT Jaylen Twyman, Pittsburgh Why did we take 3 techniques in back to back picks only 6 selections apart? This team desperately needs the position but they also need depth along the entire line. Twyman is the best player on the board and he is another high upside pass rusher. Round 4, Pick 131: OG David Moore, Grambling State Finally we have appeased the segment of the Vikings fanbase that is desperate for an offensive lineman. David Moore has a very unique build, standing 6’1 5/8″ and 350 lbs but has an almost 7 foot wingspan. A functional athlete, Moore is a very solid pass blocker that needs to work on his leverage and over extending. If he can figure those out, this could be a steal for the Vikings. Round 4, Pick 131: EDGE Shaka Toney, Penn State This is another Andre Patterson special. Shaka Toney is an incredible athlete with traits and bend for days. Possessing an explosive first step. Toney can get around just about any offensive lineman you put in front of him. Round 4, Pick 142: G Trey Hill, Georgia Another guard to satisfy the “we desperately need OL” crowd, Trey Hill comes off the board. Fan with us!!! On this episode of Climbing The Pocket’s “The Final Score”, we react with you! Your Minnesota Vikings are coming off a big win against the Buffalo Bills and now face the Dallas Cowboys. Will this be a letdown game? It sure looked like it and what could go wrong, did. After the first half, it looks that way. Starting with a third-play strip sack and a fumble was not good. Not to worry, Dallas ended up with a total of 7 sacks and the O-line couldn’t answer. “Onto the Patriots”, to channel our inner Bill Belichick. Knowing that the Cowboys started out fast and furious in the first half, can the Vikings come back? Not a chance. They were trailing 23-3 at the half. Can they stiffen and stop Tony Pollard from eating their lunch? No, they didn’t when he 189 yards all on his own and the Vikings offense only had 183. It looks like Christian Darrisaw has gone out with another concussion. Not good. Then later we saw that Ezra Cleveland had some undisclosed injury. After some good throws by Kirk Cousins, can he complete more? Not much. Justin Jefferson only has two catches in the first half, will he get more in the second? He got only one more. Vikings vs Bears… Good morning Horners! Monday night under the lights, outside, on grass, what could go wrong?! Kirk Cousins will go into his 10th Monday Night Football game hoping to win his first one. Mike Zimmer will face Matt Nagy and hope to get his first when against this team since 2017. The contest will take place at Soldier Field in Chicago with your 3-5 Minnesota Vikings at the 5-3 Chicago Bears. The Vikings are 4-16 since 2000 in that stadium, that seems to have turned into a house of horrors for whatever reason. Will the Vikings win?  Dalvin Cook is coming off two consecutive games with over 200 yards and the question is will he be able to make it three? This stadium has not been good to him in the last two years where he had only 12 yards of rushing int 2018 and 35 yards worth of rushing last year. That is a testament to the Bears defense focusing on the run. If they do it again, will the Vikings improved offensive line play be the difference and allow Dalvin to go wild, or at least protect Kirk better if he needs to throw more than 20 times a game? We know how good Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen have been, but will they be targeted at a higher level or with a game plan used in Green Bay against the Packers and against the Detroit Lions still continue?  Nick Foles will be starting for a Bears offense that has not produced a lot of points this season. Can Mike Zimmer’s defense take advantage of that? We know this game will be a challenge because it always is. Your Minnesota Vikings are at the NFL Combine taking in all the action. They are looking at the numbers and performances of players that will be on their draft board. The NFL Draft is coming at the end of April, however, NFL Free Agency will come about at the start of the league year on 16 March. Legal tampering starts on the 14th, and illegal tampering is already underway [wink, wink] offsite at the many fine establishments in Indianapolis. Your Minnesota Vikings defeated the Detroit Lions in an almost meaningless week 17 game to finish the season at a very painful 7-9. With that, the Vikes land the #14 draft slot and next season’s opponents have been set. Rick Spielman and Mike Zimmer will get a chance to run everything back. After 7 seasons though, have they reached their collective ceiling? Can they bounce back with a more competitive team and one that makes a long run in the playoffs? Darren and Dave are focusing more on the NFL Draft as we are less than 3 weeks away. Your Minnesota Vikings have obvious needs, but also, the Vikings have sneaky draft needs too. Under the previous regime with Rick Spielman, it was pretty easy to guess what positions were going to be selected early. Will that turn out to be the same with Kwesi Adofo-Mensah running the draft room? It looks similar to the moves the team has made in the past, but we'll have to wait and see. Kwesi calls it a “competitive rebuild”. It has involved acquiring some tier two and three veterans at low costs to ensure most holes are filled with at least some adequate veterans. It begs the question of how will the Vikings use their #12 draft position? In our final segment, we are going to look at some of the Vikings who made their way to Valhalla. The NFL Draft is just a few days away starting on Thursday. There is very little time left for your Minnesota Vikings to rehearse as many scenarios as possible in the first-ever draft where Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Keven O’Connell are running the show. The previous regime left them with the #12 pick in the first round. Is it high enough to get the player they want? Will they trade down? Your Minnesota Vikings had a splash NFL Free Agency signing and now we are entering the age of Za’Darius. Edge rusher from the Green Bay Packers, Za’Darius Smith has signed a 3-year deal to play opposite Danielle Hunter on the Purple’s defensive line. The hint came yesterday when he put out the cryptic tweet stating, “Meet at the quarterback." Vikings vs Saints… Good morning Horners! Your Minnesota Vikings were victorious over the New Orleans Saints down at the Mercedes Benz Super Dome Sunday afternoon and it was glorious! If you missed the live GMG ITR broadcast, it is here. Join Ted, Drew, Dave and special guest from the Daily Norseman, Mr. Christopher Gates. After getting a little lubed up during the game, the guys go over the keys to the win. It was fun, and we all need a little more of that, especially on a Monday. LOL.  Mike Zimmer planned a brilliant game. His out of the box thinking of moving Danielle Hunter and Everyone Griffen into the interior rushing spots was spot on. That move generated much quicker pressure on Drew Brees and put him off of his ‘normal’ game. The rest of the defense, especially some of the veterans like Xavier Rhodes, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith and Anthony Harris were playing at the tops of their games. Yeah baby! It was very much needed and appreciated.  Kevin Stefanski play calling, though worrisome at times, seemed to be working to set up plays that would happen later. Dalvin Cook had an awesome first half causing the Saints to respect his ability which then opened up the room outs and play action. It was in that second phase, and especially in overtime, that it payed off. Stefon Diggs was angry early not getting anything thrown his way [he was double covered], but then made some key catches in the second half. But with Diggsy being covered, that left Adam Thielen more open to do what he does. Other than his early fumble, Thielen looked back to full form and it paid off. Boy, did it ever pay off, when in OT Kirk Cousins launches the most import pass of his career. It was a 40 yarder to Thielen at the 3 yard line. Three plays later he then again Kyle Rudolph on a fade in the corner of the end zone to win the game. The Vikings’ ‘Go Get It’ image with Rudy snagging a ball couldn’t have been more prophetic if it had tried.  Enjoy this win. Your Minnesota Vikings signed a couple of players yesterday. They signed Jesse Davis, who played right tackle for the Miami Dolphins but will look to start at the right guard position. It is assumed that both Wyatt Davis, last year’s 3rd round draft choice, and Oli Udoh will compete with him for the position. Was it the improvement you all hoped for? If the Vikings had available cap space before recently, would they have targeted someone who grades better and that the fans are angry about losing? Or would they have targeted Davis, where Dolphin fans rejoice that he is off their team? What does this mean for the offensive line? Does it conform with Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s slogan for this year, “Improve on the margins.”? The Vikes also signed cornerback Nate Hairston from the Denver Broncos and re-signed their practice squad corner, Tye Smith. Both of these players are supposed to fight for a spot on the team with no guarantees that they can even accomplish that. Cornerback numbers are looking better, but there is still a lack of quality starters. There is hope that Cameron Dantzler and Chandon Sullivan [who signed last week] can take the next step and be two of the three corners needed to start. However, that other outside position is still empty. Does that make cornerback a round 1 target in the NFL Draft? Could be. To round things up, the guys will take a look at the 2021 draft picks and discuss who will contribute. The team got production from first-rounder, OT Christian Darrisaw, and some from two of the three fifth-rounders, RB Kene Nwangwu and FS Camryn Bynum. However, there were 4 players selected in the third round that were virtually invisible and barely played, if at all. Will that change this season? How will the newly hired staff use them? Vikings vs Giants… Good morning Horners! Oh, what a week we’ve had as fans! The GMG gang sat down to discuss it, from the reasons why Kirk Cousins prefers to throw the 4 yard check down to CJ Ham over launching it to an open receiver downfield, to one of the said receivers, Stefon Diggs starting to get his diva on. Ted explained that in pretty much a sane matter [he wrote about it too] and asked you, how would you feel?   Mike Zimmer leads the squad into Metlife Stadium in New Jersey to play the NY Giants this week in what should be a crucial game to the organization. “Crucial for  game 5” you ask? Yes, because of the hot and cold play of the team starting out 2-2. The record isn’t terrible, nor is it not recoverable, but it is how the Vikings played on the road that needs to change if the team wants to make a run into the playoffs at the end of the season. Dalvin Cook should figure in prominently in Sunday’s plans with how the G-Men play the run. They have a tendency to over pursue leading to wide open cutback lanes. Big Blue also has a pretty outstanding young RB themselves in Saquon Barkley who will test the run stopping ability of the Vikings defense if he does actually play but is still recovering from an ankle injury. That vaunted Minnesota defense will also go against the hottest rookie QB of the year, Danny Jones, better known as “Danny Dimes.” He has led the Giants to two consecutive victories in the last two weeks keeping them in play for the NFC East title if they keep it up. The Vikes will try to insure that doesn’t happen.   Drew releases another round of his patented trivia, Vikings vs Giants style and Ted is outstanding answering as usual, only needing Dave’s help once. One of the players that has been discussed as a cut is edge rusher Za'Darius Smith. Vikings versus Bears… Good morning Horners! Well, maybe not so good. In a game where Mitch Trubisky was injured and backup quarterback Chase Daniels looked better than Kirk Cousins, the Vikings came in flat. When the team plays cold, it leads to one person… Mike Zimmer. Oh, there is blame all around in this one from the offseason moves that did or didn’t happen, the coaching on both sides of the ball, and QB that looks like he should be a backup yet is getting a guaranteed $84 million, and a decent defense that for a third game in a row let the Bears score on their opening drive. This was an absolutely frustrating game to watch as a Vikings fan and Ted, Drew and Dave felt it.   The offensive line in combination with the statuesque play by Cousins gave up 6 sacks on the day and 2 fumbles lost. The running game looked ineffective, but that was anticipated against such a good defense, but there was hope Akiem Hicks, Roquan Smith and Bilal Nichols were out. That hope quickly diminished as the Vikings only generated 40 yards on  the ground all day. In the air it wasn’t much better until late in the game when the team went to a hurry up and did not let Kirk think so much. He did end up going 27/36 for 233 yards, but most was at the end. Bad throws, poor choices and not seeing open receivers marked most of the day. It was painful to watch.   Please tell us your reactions to the game. The start of the 2021 Minnesota Vikings season surely hasn’t started as we’d like. Your Vikings we face Kyler Murray and the whole Arizona Cardinals team down in the desert. Murray is known for his ability to be mobile and destroy game plans making victory difficult. Sunday was no different as the Vikings fell to the red birds 33-34. The offense started hot and Kirk Cousins hit his first long ball to KJ Osborn for a 64-yard touchdown on the second play of the drive. The defense still looked discombobulated with moments of very good individual play by the likes of Danielle Hunter [3 sacks], Eric Kendricks, Xavier Woods, Michael Pierce, and Nick Vigil, but as a whole, there were communication issues, blown coverages, and again for the second week in a row, some poor tackling. This all resulted in giving up 501 yards and 34 points. Wasn’t the defense supposed to be a strength this season? Then there was the bane of Vikings fans everywhere… Greg Joseph missed an extra point, hits two 52 yard field goals, only to miss a 37 yarder to win the game. And you wonder why we drink? LOL. Is there a disconnect in what Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman believe on how this football team should be built and then the utilization of those players? Good morning Horners! A day after the Minnesota Vikings went to Lambeau Field and defeated division rival Green Bay Packers, the win is still so sweet. In a day where weather was an absolute factor, with wind gusts anywhere from 40 to 50 miles an hour, running the ball seem to be key. Dalvin Cook stood out and took the game over. He had 226 all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns giving the Vikings their first win over a Matt LaFleur coached team.  Mike Zimmer had his hands full, especially in the second half when injuries started to decimate the Viking secondary. Coming into the game they were already short handed, but due to a hit by a teammate on Cameron Dantzler, and Kris Boyd suffering what looked like a knee injury, Zimmer had to manufacture coverage in a way he hadn’t before. At the end of the game, Anthony Harris was playing nickel because there was nobody left. Even Adam Thielen volunteered to play corner if needed. But it was in the second half, and with all those substitutions that Zimmer schemed a way to stop the Packers offense. After dominating the third quarter offensively, as fans we all knew to just wait for the collapse. Then the Packers scored, made a two point conversion, and got the ball back with 57 seconds left. We’d all seen this story before and knew the ending, all except for rookie defensive end DJ Wonnom. Good Morning Gjallarhorn debuts the Two Old Bloggers shows With hosts Dave Stefano [Luft Krigare] from GMG and Darren Campbell formally from Grant’s Tomb, Kick Ass Blog and Deep Thoughts by Darren Campbell. As Part of #Vlogmas2020, where the goal is to post a new video ‘show’ everyday of the month of December, the Climbing The Pocket Network’s production focus on your Minnesota Vikings. GMG’s 2OB will be doing the same bring you great coverage looking from a slightly different angle, even if that is from Yellowknife Canada.  Darren posed a question, wondering if the Vikings were actually developing an offensive line that isn’t trash? Riley Reiff has played his best this season and is quite motivated after his pay cut, Brian O’Neill is solid, Garrett Bradbury seems to be improving somewhat, and rookie Ezra Cleveland was doing a good job prior to his injury. Dakota Dozier is the weakest link of what should be a decent line. Ezra has been limited in practice this week but looks to come back against the Jacksonville Jaguars and taking over the spot that Brett Jones has been holding down for him. Jones played better than Dozier, at least as indicated by grading, but do we see any changes there? You all know Mike Zimmer and the offense, and he’ll let Gary Kubiak make that decision.  Darren also wanted to compare the 2015 draft class with 2020 draft class. 2015 is considered Rick Spielman’s best draft ever where he drafted five out of the top six players that are still in the league, and three of which have become stars and Eric Kendricks, the Danielle Hunter and of course Stefon Diggs. Trae Waynes was serviceable and a very good tackler, and even MyCole Pruitt still gets his catches every once in a while. So far with the 2020 class, Justin Jefferson looks like he’ll be a star and when you compare him to Stefon Diggs and even Randy Moss, that’s really saying something. Jeff Gladney at corner continues to develop, Ezra Cleveland from what we’ve seen looks like he can be the real deal, Cameron Dantzler has some skills and DJ Wonnum him might actually develop into a decent defensive end. There are five players there that could be cornerstones for the Vikings within the next few years, not to mention contributors like KJ Osborn and maybe Troy Dye. Do you think the 2020 draft by the Vikings will be as good or exceed that special one in 2015?  Wilson took a quick look at the upcoming game against the Jaguars. Mike Glennon will be starting and it was pointed out we beat him the last time he played the Vikings. It will be interesting to see if their effective little running back James Robinson will give our run defense any fits. It is the Jaguars defense that has probably contributed most to their 1-10 record. The squad is very young and they have dealt with DB issues similar to the Vikings. Some highlights from the show: We agreed on our top two divisions in football, which just so happen to include eight of the Vikings’ opponents this season. Neither of us are all that worried about the Hunter situation yet, but I explained how I’ll feel a lot better when he actually reports. I’m all in on the Irv Smith Jr. hype train, while Flip thinks the Vikings defense will bounce back to be a viable fantasy option in 2021. Flip thinks the Vikings should save their newfound funds, while I prefer utilizing it to lock down key players for the future. When it came to potential first round quarterback busts, both of us mentioned a top two pick. We agreed that there probably won’t be any surprises under center when the Vikings face Green Bay and Chicago late in the 2021 season. Tick tock, let’s go! Hitting the news was a report by Marc Malusis of WFAN in New York. He is a beat writer for the New York Giants. He had a trusted source [probably close to the OBJ camp] tell him the the Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns in discussions on a trade for Odell Beckham Jr. The guys from Climbing The Pocket Network discuss the possibility, especially after the Vikes traded Stefon Diggs to the Buffalo Bills. Since then, beat writers for both the Vikings and the Browns have pinged their sources and say there is nothing to this. PA is one of them, and well as Mathew Coller. Malusis came on SKOR North and defended his reporting and source. It may be nothing more than OBJ's people trying to goose along something that isn't there. We will never know at this point.  Christian McCafferty receive a sizable extension a couple of days ago, and the panel talked about what that might mean for a Dalvin Cook extension. Hint… it won’t be cheap. Will Dalvin hold out if he doesn’t get one?   ESPN replayed the 2009 Vikings vs Green Bay Packers game, and it was good. That team and that season brought back some great memories and feelings. Brett Favre was amazing that year and it stirred feelings on both sides. Good morning Horners! Aren’t victory Tuesday’s great? Join Ted, Flip, Drew and Dave as we celebrate a magical night. Your Minnesota Vikings go in the Soldier Field wearing white on white for the first time since 2015, and win over the Chicago Bears. Mike Zimmer finally beat Matt Nagy’s team in a place that has caused the Vikings fits over the years. There were even points last night where it look like it would again, like that Cordarrelle Patterson hundred and 4 yard kickoff return, but due to a combination of Vikings defensive improvement and bears offensive inadequacies, that was it. The Vikings defense went on to cause a 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, turnover on downs, and another turnover on downs to stop any more points being scored against them. Wow!  It wasn’t all the defense either. The Vikings never went away from the run even thought the Bears tried to shut it down. They did keep Dalvin Cook to 3.2 yards per carry, but he was not stopped. It was a balanced execution where Kirk Cousins was “efficient” with some key throws when needed. Yes, there were a couple short of the sticks throws, but they were outnumbered by throws to Justin Jefferson, Kyle Rudolph, and others that did get first downs on long yardage. The stat line shows an interception, but that was a rare drop on Adam Thielen. Thielen though had two TDs with the first being a spectacular one handed catch. It was sweet!  Special teams play continued to be an issue, but was overcome. It will need to be rectified to keep this three game win streak going. If it does, the guys might move on to talking about the P word. After getting blown out by the Dallas Cowboys, they went toe to toe with the New England Patriots, coming out on top by a score of 33-26. Within the game, both teams traded scores throughout with all 12 either tying the game or taking the lead, but the biggest storyline coming out of the game was that head coach Kevin O’Connell overcame adversity and got the Vikings back on track to improve to 9-2. The biggest takeaways from Thursday night’s game were that this team can overcome adversity and they have made the necessary adjustments to succeed. Your Minnesota Vikings have made it through the opening weeks of NFL Free Agency doing what Kwesi called a “competitive rebuild.” What is that? What does it mean? This includes navigating the legal tampering period, getting under the cap, to signing a few free agents. General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell and their staffs have been busy. It took an extension of Kirk Cousins, some restructured contracts, the releasing of Michael Pierce, and a few other moves to get to the point where they sit today. The latest move, or non-move, was the decision to keep Danielle Hunter and pay him his $18 million bonus. That led to the biggest signing of the offseason, Za’Darius Smith to pair with Hunter to immediately improve the pass rush. Let’s review what all happened and where the Vikings now sit. We're now in week 3 of training camp, and the Minnesota Vikings are preparing to face the Las Vegas Raiders. Tyler has been riled up over fellow writer, Nate Davis of USA Today having the Vikes sitting at #17 on his preseason power rankings. Really?! Tyler and Dave think that ranking is way too low for an offense with such a capable group of weapons and an improved and healthy defense. Does #17 sound right to you?  First though, there have been some pleasant surprises in camp so far, and disappointments. Kellen Mond is being given all sorts of opportunities to win the backup quarterback job from Sean Mannion. Kevin O’Connell wants that, but he is still demonstrating the lack of progress needed to secure the job. It is not due to physical abilities, it has to do with his processing and making correct decisions about who to throw to and where to place the ball. This is as the defense rushes and collapses the pocket to get to him for a touch sack. There is hope that with lots of reps in the preseason games, the speed and accuracy of processing will increase. Why, because he’s been sort of unreliable. Do you think he can take that developmental next step? Then this weekend Kevin O'Connell said in his press conference that there is competition at the center position. Why? Because we keep hearing and reading accounts of Garrett Bradbury being manhandled by Harrison Phillips. If Bradbury’s technique doesn’t improve quickly or Chris Reed can’t spin up fast enough to take his place at center, defensive coordinators will target Bradbury to disrupt the Vikings' offense. That is one thing this team can’t afford if it wants to live up to expectations and hype. Will Bradbury get better or lose his starting job for the second time in two years?
