10 Oct 2022 | EP241: Stop Attracting Clutter with Tracy McCubbin | 00:36:25
As America attempts to recover nearly two years of “pandemic purchases” that have left our homes full of stuff, it’s no surprise that two-thirds of Americans admitted to having too many things in their homes, especially due to excessive online shopping during the pandemic. According to my guest today, celebrity decluttering expert, Tracy McCubbin, a cluttered space isn't just inconvenient―the truth is it's hard to lead a joyful, purposeful life when the things around you detract from your relationships, habits, and goals. On today’s episode, Tracy willl discuss why filling our homes with stuff leaves us feeling empty, and tips for bringing more happiness to our homes. And no, you cannot “Marie Kondo” your way out of clutter, says Tracy. If you want to get to the root of your clutter, Tracy says you need to address why you are attracting clutter in the first place. This discussion will encourage listeners to recognize the mind traps that leave us unable to let go of possessions that we don’t want, use, or love in order to make real change - to examine the deep root of how our excess possessions got there in the first place. ------------------------------

09 Mar 2021 | EP162: Minimalist Living: World Travel with Rosie (+ Adam) Copp | 00:33:56
Pre-Order Your Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living & Parenting with Simplicity ----------------------------- Today is the fourth in a series called Minimalist Living. You’ll hear from minimalists living on boats, NYC, coverted-van living, and, on today’s episode, world travel, with the woman behind The Irish Mummy, Rosie Copp (and special guest, her husband Adam Copp). I told Rosie and Adam during the episode that I was pleasantly surprised where the conversation took us. Rosie spent some time discussing how she worked through decluttering sentimental items while grieving the loss of her mother. I appreciated her insight in this area and hope it helps anyone listening that may be going through the same process. As with each of these 'Minimalist Living' interviews, I loved hearing how minimalism has influenced life in these areas and my hope is that it encourages you in your own minimalist pursuits (or maybe even prompts you to change up your lifestyle- you never know)! 02 Nov 2021 | EP196: Becoming Intentional with Money Management with Erin Skye Kelly | 00:32:17
I usually don’t share guest quotes prior to the interview but my guest today, author, Erin Skye Kelly said something that really stuck with me, “Debt Is Clutter.” Debt is clutter and it leads to a lack of freedom. It was this lesson that I had to learn before I began to pursue the purging of material things. Intentionality with my finances came first and the clutter followed. This episode won’t suddenly eradicate your debt but I hope it provides you with tools and inspiration to see that debt freedom is attainable through discipline, but first and foremost, intentionality! ---- Show Notes for EP196: Becoming Intentional with Money Management Enjoy this Podcast? 27 Jun 2024 | [REPLAY] EP227: Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life with Luke Burgis | 00:29:22
A lot of my current listeners may have missed this previous episode with guest, Luke Burgis (and even if you did hear the original, it’s a great one to re-listen to as you understand how mimetic desire may appear in your life!) Once you learn about mimetic desire, you realize how much it has impacted your life, how much it is all around us and how to begin to set yourself apart... Mimetic desire — the act of desiring simply what others desire – imitating what others want instead of developing our own intentional, conscious wanting – is powerful in our development, our world and in our everyday lives. Today’s guest, author Luke Burgis, shares his expertise about this concept, how society influences mimetic desire, how we can determine what we truly desire, the impact we can have on the desires of those around us and more! ------------------------------- Links Discussed in This Episode Order a Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living and Parenting with Simplicity Resource: Motivational Code Connect with Luke: Website Instagram Substack Book: Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire Episode Sponsors | The Minimalist Moms Podcast would not be possible without the support of weekly sponsors. 01 Nov 2022 | EP244: The Open Air Life with Linda Åkeson McGurk | 00:31:43
Just like there is slow food, slow parenting, and slow entertainment, friluftsliv is a form of slow nature. An outdoorsy cousin of hygge, friluftsliv ('free-loofts-liv') is what Nordic people do outside all day before they cozy up in front of the fireplace with their wool socks on and a cup of hot cocoa. The concept is humble, but revolutionary: Live simply. Go outside often. Be kind to the earth. Friluftsliv can be as simple as an evening walk around the neighborhood or as advanced as a multiday backpacking expedition in the remote wilderness, or anything in between. Joining me today is Swedish-American writer, Linda McGurk. You likely know Linda from her bestselling book, There’s No Such Thing As Bad Weather. She joined me back on EP158 and totally we’ll go deeper with her new book, The Open Air Life. ------------------------------ As mentioned in the episode:

07 Feb 2023 | EP259: Create Anyway: Pursuing Creativity in Motherhood with Ashlee Gadd | 00:22:01
Mothers often feel guilt when they pursue something that takes time away from their children, especially when that something could be deemed less important than parenting. Writer Ashlee Gadd felt the same way when she was navigating being a first-time mother, exhausted yet yearning to be creative. Now the mother of three, Gadd created Coffee + Crumbs, an online community for women wanting to express themselves through storytelling, and intentionally finds time to be creative. In her new book, Create Anyway: The Joy of Pursuing Creativity in the Margins of Motherhood Gadd gives readers permission to pursue their creative gifts alongside motherhood. On today's episode she’ll discuss: how being creative everyday makes you a healthier person and a better mother, why it is (more than) okay to create and mother at the same time, why it takes a village to raise our kids and also to make art and more… ------------------------------- Links Discussed in This Episode

06 Jun 2023 | EP281: Too Many Clothes, Nothing to Wear with Erin Flynn (@cladwellapp) | 00:28:05
“I have too many clothes but nothing to wear.” It’s a common phrase that many of us think as we peer into our closets. But is there a solution? It’s my personal belief that decluttering can absolutely solve this problem; however, I think there are even more ways we can address this mentality. Joining me today to help find solutions to closet overwhelm is founder of the Cladwell app, Erin Flynn. As a working mom with limited time, Erin understands the challenges that many of us face when it comes to our wardrobes. She believes in the concept of "less is more," helping people refine their personal style, shop smarter, and get creative with their existing wardrobe. Erin emphasizes the importance of normalizing outfit repeats, living intentionally, shopping from our own closets, and, of course, clearing the clutter. The episode delves into these topics and more! -----------------------Links Discussed in This Episode

A new series focused on 'real' minimalist moms: It’s odd to refer to this series that way but I wanted to encourage the everyday mom that you don’t have to go to extremes (or have a giant platform) to influence minimalism to those around you. Today I bring you my conversation with mama, Kasey Ciesiensky. Kasey is a homeschooling mom of four that has been on a journey to minimize toxic chemicals in her life for the past 9 years. She loves researching all things pertaining to a less toxic and more natural lifestyle and sharing what she learns with others. She is the founder and CEO of Red’s Gone Green, a company that handcrafts all natural cleaners so that you can breathe safer air that smells deliciously fragrant. In this episode, I speak with Parker Hymas from Fight the New Drug, a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about the harmful effects of pornography through research, facts, and personal stories. Parker dives into the organization’s mission to educate people — especially young audiences — on how porn impacts the brain, mental health, and society. 01 Feb 2022 | EP207: Swedish Death Cleaning: Morbid or Mandatory? with Emily McDermott | 00:29:22
Swedish Death Cleaning, or döstädning, is removing unnecessary items and preparing your home so that your loved ones aren’t burdened by them after you pass away. While the book that made it famous in 2017, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson, focuses mostly on people who are in their sixties or “when the time is coming closer for you to leave the planet”, there is no reason why we can’t start today as younger moms who don’t want to burden our spouse/partners and loved ones. One question: If you were to die tomorrow, what would your loved ones have to do? Here to walk us through the practicals of this question is writer and fellow minimalist, Emily McDermott. Emily will answer questions such as: Who is death cleaning for? How long is this process? Should we tell our families? What are the lessons we can learn from this culture? And more… ---- Show Notes for EP207: Swedish Death Cleaning: Morbid or Mandatory? Enjoy this Podcast? Post a review and share it! 27 Feb 2024 | Beyond the Baby Years: Clearing the (Heavy) Clutter with Alissa Henry (EP322) | 00:24:01
The set up of today’s conversation is slightly different than previous episodes. Alissa has been a previous guest on the podcast so we just jumped right into our topic: the struggle of infertility and the emotional process of letting go of baby items. In our conversation, Alissa discusses the mindset shift from holding onto hope to embracing gratitude for what she already has. She also emphasizes the importance of not feeling alone in this journey and encourages listeners to consider decluttering as a positive step forward. Many of you have reached out asking how to declutter those items you just can’t let go of - specifically baby items - and my hope is that this conversation provides some answers for you - even if your only takeaway is more confidently knowing that you aren’t alone. ------------------------------ Links Discussed in This Episode

16 Jun 2020 | EP125: Ask Questions, Have Discussions [Intentional Media Consumption] with Rita Rogers | 00:28:00
Today, I bring you my conversation with Rita Rogers. Rita is an is an ICU nurse, farm wife, mom to two little girls and blogger at Rita Rogers Co. where she advocates for living well on purpose. Rita takes on cultural norms such as health culture and thought processes that may not be serving us well by getting us to ask questions and apply common sense solutions. In this conversation, we have an open dialogue on intentional media consumption and what that looks like in our day-to-day. We're not experts, just two minimalist mamas looking to navigate the plethora of information coming our way. I need to have ways to insulate my mind from the negativity of the world so that I can fulfill my daily parenting duties. That said, the 'noise' of the news media is something that's hard to tune out so instead of completely doing so, I just have to get better at navigating. How do we set boundaries as our kids age? How do we implement new rules with our older, high school aged children? Laurie will answer all of these questions and more in our interview today! 20 Dec 2022 | EP252: Let's Declutter: Negative Self-Talk with Julia Ubbenga | 00:23:31
Who do you talk to the most? Maybe you’re thinking: “my spouse, my kids, my friends, or my coworkers.” This may surprise you but the answer is none of the above. On a daily basis, the person you talk to the most is, without question, yourself. We each have around 70,000 self-talk thoughts a day. And here’s the problem—80% of them are negative. When we hear a steady barrage of negative words from the person we talk to by far the most, life becomes anything but simple. Disempowering thoughts (I’m a bad mom, I’m a mess, I’m so overwhelmed, This day is terrible), especially when repeated often, drag us down and complicate our lives. These thoughts distract us from the present moment, keep us from meeting our goals and stop us from fully living our lives; however, what if we could apply the idea of decluttering to this area of life? Joining me today to encourage us as we ‘declutter’ negative self-talk is Julia Ubbenga, voice behind the popular social media account and blog, Rich in What Matters. Today Julia will take us through her process of forming better habits around the way we speak to ourselves. ------------------------------- Links Discussed in This Episode

Did you know that babies less than a day old can parse out different vowel sounds? Me neither, until I read Maya Smart’s READING FOR OUR LIVES: A Literacy Action Plan from Birth to Six, a step-by-step guide for building literacy in a child’s early years. Maya is here today to discuss key strategies that parents should employ early (and often), conventional reading tools and instruction focuses on teachers and the school years, essential lessons parents can – and should – give their children, and more… For those that are new around here, I release bonus episodes with unique topics that may not interest my wider audience so if this topic doesn’t fit what you’re looking for, join me back here next Tuesday for a conversation about the importance of outdoor play (sans parents!) that you don’t want to miss! ------------------------------- Show Notes for Bonus Episode: How Parents Can Lay the Foundation for Literacy Success Enjoy this Podcast?Post a review and share it! 08 Dec 2020 | EP149: [Post-Holiday] Should to Good | 00:31:13
I called today’s episode ‘post-holiday should to good’. The week between Christmas and the New Year can leave me in a bit of a funk/fog. There are things we feel like we should do but, my guest today, Robyn Conley Downs, believes we should turn the should into good. It’s pretty easy to go through your to-do list and start seeing which items you are doing because you feel like you should. So quickly, this season that is supposed to be full of light, joy, and hope, adds up in tasks from various categories. Whether you feel that you should because you used to in the past or because you see someone else doing it, flipping the script to how you want to feel, from should to good, will allow you to reclaim your experience, attention, and energy. Order Your Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living & Parenting with Simplicity ---- In today’s bonus episode with Tara Clark (@modernmomprobs), we discuss intentionality and mental health - specifically when it comes to social media. Modern technology is not going to change (if anything, it’ll only capture more areas of our lives.) It’s up to us to MODIFY our behavior. While social media can provide an escape, connect us to friends across the globe and become a useful resource for income, it can quickly become an addiction that takes us away from our priorities, and most importantly, our children. It’s something most of us realize but have a hard time actively combating. What do you do to set boundaries and protect mental health in this area? 18 Jun 2019 | EP82: The 'Yes' Trap with Jennifer Burnham | 00:36:05
This week, I interview organizational coach, Jennifer Burnham. Today, she will be speaking to the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ behind saying ‘yes’! As a culture we’ve become so accustomed to ‘busy’. We believe that the more we say yes, the more we will become. Better mothers. Better wives. Better friends. Better volunteers. Everything will be better. It’s impossible to keep up the charade. Very few of us (if anyone) can balance all of the invitations to busy that come our way. Busy ends up leaving us feeling bankrupt of ourselves. We discuss:

Order Your Copy of Minimalist Moms: Living & Parenting with Simplicity -------------------------- Professional organizer, Elise Hay joins me for today’s conversation all about involving kids in the organizing process. While there may be some benefit to organizing without your children, the negative of tackling this task solo is that your child misses out on the growth experience. There is a feeling of reward associated with accomplishment and, it’s my belief that our children should partake in some of that with us. Handling the decluttering for them isn’t necessarily doing them a favor, on the flip side, it may actually do a disservice to you both. By involving your children in the organizing process, you’re enabling them to be more mindful of the items they own. Show Notes for EP166: Involving Kids in the Organizing Process Enjoy this Podcast?
