07 May 2024 | 154: The best nutrients for skin health | Glenicia Nosworthy M.D., internal medicine physician | 00:51:20
“When we are doing aesthetic treatments that are increasing collagen and elastin production, you have to consider, ‘What do cells need to make collagen and elastin?’ They need great forms of nutrients, proteins, and building blocks,” says internal medicine physician Glenicia Nosworthy M.D., who specializes in aesthetic and integrative medicine. “I can inject you with anything that's going to stimulate the cell. But if the cell is not getting the nourishment or the nutrients that it needs to function properly, then your response is going to be very minimal. And you're going to be paying for multiple treatments and you're not going to get maximum results.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Nosworthy about platelet rich fibrin treatments, how to boost collagen production, and what nutrients to focus on for skin health.

17 Mar 2023 | 101: Groundbreaking news that will shake up the beauty industry | bonus episode | 00:13:16
Did you know that the FDA never had the authority for beauty product recalls? Or that beauty brands didn't have to disclose potential fragrance allergens on ingredient lists? Or that beauty companies didn't have to report adverse events to the FDA?
All of that is about to change.
In late December of last year, a bill passed in Congress implementing a massive and long-overdo update to the FDA’s regulatory oversight for the beauty industry: Thanks to the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulations Act (MoCRA), the beauty industry will better align itself with supplement manufacturers—and even closer to the EU, which is often held up as the standard for cosmetic regulation.
In this bonus solo episode, mbg beauty director Alexandra Engler walks through the exciting changes, what we now know, and what it all means for you, the beauty consumer.

31 May 2022 | 60: The easiest way to decode your ingredient label | Sabrina Noorani, founder of ClearForMe | 00:39:44
“The biggest surprise to me was the fact that at the core, there is no standard for how ingredients are labeled. So something as simple as vitamin C, which is a great ingredient that helps with so many things, there's 35 different synonyms for vitamin C. Fragrance has 32 different synonyms, formaldehyde has 12, gluten 27, and even water has over 60 different ways that it could be labeled—and it's water. How can a consumer be expected to find the right products for her and tailored to what she needs?” says Sabrina Noorani, founder of ClearForMe, a platform to increase ingredient transparency for brands and retailers. In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Noorani about her experience as a beauty consumer, what people search for in formulas, and what ingredients she personally uses.

“I became an esthetician because I fell in love with taking care of people. I love the idea that someone would come to me one-on-one, tell me all their issues or insecurities, and I would help them overcome that. We would become a team, working together to get the skin the healthiest it could be for you,” says celebrity esthetician Joanna Vargas, founder of her eponymous spa and skin care line. “It’s about how you treat yourself: What products you use, how much you sleep, if you’re eating well. You have so much control over what you see in the mirror.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, host and mindbodygreen beauty director Alexandra Engler chats with Vargas about the latest in spa treatments and technology, ingredients she loves for all skin needs, and why you should address the whole body (not just the face) in your skin care routine. “Skin care isn’t an exact science. We can get into the nitty gritty details of ingredients all we want, but that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t know how to use it in your own routine. 30 Aug 2022 | 73: What the West got wrong about Korean Beauty | Skin care experts Christine Chang & Sarah Lee | 00:45:45
“One of the most important things you can do is to educate yourself on some of the key skin care ingredients and how they work with your skin: Because maybe there’s a product that’s formulated for your skin type or concern, but it contains an ingredient that doesn’t work well for you. [It’s important to have a] deeper understanding and deeper relationship with your skin,” says Sarah Lee. 09 Jul 2024 | 157: Dark spots, large pores & wrinkle solutions | board-certified dermatologist Muneeb Shah, DO | 00:44:43
“When I started getting into skin care myself, I was like ‘I have this texture, these bumps, and I’m starting to develop fine lines, what are the things I can buy?’ It’s always been very problem-solution focused. If we understand how to get these concerns, then we can understand what ingredients to look for in a product and then we can find the right products to really help with that,” says board-certified dermatologist Muneeb Shah, D.O., who is sometimes better known as the face behind the YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram sensation Doctorly. 02 May 2023 | 108: Can topicals actually mimic injectables? | biotech scientist Lauren Otsuki & beauty vet Vimla Black-Gupta | 00:50:41
“I think the essence of what biotech brings to beauty is the analytical, comprehensive look at the root causes. What are the receptors in the skin? What are the pathways? Why is this happening, and how can we intervene? It requires a knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of what’s going on in the skin,” says biotech scientist Lauren Otsuki, who is joined by beauty vet Vimla Black-Gupta, co-founders of the subtopical and biotech skin care brand Ourself. “One of the biggest fundamental differences between the way traditional skincare has approached using ingredients and the way biotech people approach things, is that we want to be able to make sure that they can get to where they need to go in the skin. We evaluate whether the ingredient or compound can actually engage the target.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, host and mindbodygreen beauty director Alexandra Engler chats with Otsuki and Black-Gupta about why one of the biggest hurdles in skin care is the delivery method, what to look for in a hyaluronic acid product, and more.

09 May 2023 | 109: The beauty ritual no one's talking about | Beauty vet Eleonora Miller | 00:37:46
“How you view your beauty rituals should be entirely up to what you need. For some, it’s reading a book with a cup of tea while taking the time for a face mask. For others, it’s just closing the eyes, unwinding, and doing a simple few steps,” says longtime beauty vet Eleonora Miller, founder of natural spa brand Exquisite Face & Body. “Because during challenging times, you have to relearn how to simply take care of yourself.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Miller about how beauty can be a tool for compassion during times of hardship and loss, how to cultivate compassion for yourself, and why skin care should never be stressful.

21 Feb 2022 | 46: How to actually use a microcurrent tool | skin care specialist Pooja Johari, M.S. | 00:50:33
“Microcurrent is a very tiny electrical current that mimics your body’s own natural pulses. What that means is our brains use currents to communicate through our neurological pathways, where it’s constantly sending signals. What we're doing with this technology is mimicking those currents and delivering them to our facial muscles,” says biomedical engineer and holistic skin care expert Pooja Johari, M.S., founder of E7 Wellness, noting that this stimulates our muscles to act younger. “The thing is, the facial muscles can’t tell whether the signal is coming from the brain or this device.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, host and mindbodygreen beauty director Alexandra Engler joins Johari on a deep dive into microcurrent technology—including red flags, what it actually feels like, and what to look for in skin care products.

“It’s positioned as empowering for the consumer to ‘do their research’ on ingredient lists, but I actually think it ends up being disempowering. You need an advanced degree in chemistry to keep up with the ingredients, formulas, and latest research. How can we expect the average consumer to do that?” says Jaleh Bisharat, founder of beauty e-retailer NakedPoppy. “And unfortunately there’s just not as much independent research as we need. There’s a lot of data holes.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Bisharat about how machine learning can improve the beauty shopping experience, why the consumer shouldn't need to be “armchair chemists” to shop smarter, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than you found it.
