17 Jan 2023 | Has Portland’s Live Music Scene Fully Recovered? | 00:17:09
January has been officially declared Portland Music Month. And now 21 venues have come together to put on hundreds of shows in a month-long music festival.
The pandemic stalled Portland’s music scene for a few years. That was especially devastating to a city where so much of our music industry infrastructure and economy is built around live events.
Today on the show we have J. Pinky Jansen, founder of PDX Presents where he diligently documents the Portland music scene. He also volunteers with the nonprofit that helped establish Portland Music Month.
Pinky has gone to more shows this past year than most of us have even read through show listings. So I wanted to ask him how it was looking out there. How is our live music scene recovering?
You can find a full listing of Portland Music Month events here, and if you want to connect with more local music in Portland, take Pinky's recommendation and check out the NearHear app!

19 Jan 2023 | Why Can’t Oregon Effectively Teach Children To Read? | 00:19:31
A lot of Oregon students are having a hard time reading. We’re talking more than 60% of third graders and over half of seventh graders. But what if the problem was never with the students, or the parents, or the teachers? What if the problem is the approach and materials school districts use?
Today on the show, we’ll talk with Julia Silverman, who’s gone deep on the problem for The Oregonian. She’s going to help break down why we can’t seem to fix this issue and what it’s going to take to set up all Portland students for success.

24 Jan 2023 | Is Portland Killing Its Food Cart Culture? | 00:18:25
Food carts are easily the beating heart of Portland’s food culture, but they’re facing a new challenge. An Oregon law about managing wastewater went into effect in Multnomah County on January 1st. Many owners are saying compliance is too expensive and nearly impossible— some are even shutting down completely.
Brooke Jackson-Glidden, editor for Eater Portland, takes us inside the new set of food cart regulations and what it means for our already embattled food cart scene.

26 Jan 2023 | Why Walking in Portland Is So Dangerous | 00:17:59
More pedestrians were killed by cars in Portland in 2022 than in any of the past 70 years. And a Multnomah County report a few years ago also found that a majority of Portland’s deadly crashes occur in neighborhoods with larger populations of people of color and low-income households.
Today on the show we have pedestrian and transportation advocate Sarah Iannarone, Executive Director of The Street Trust. We’ll find out: What is making our roads so dangerous for pedestrians? Why are certain neighborhoods more dangerous than others? And what can we do about it?

02 Feb 2023 | Is Portland the New Pizza Capital of the World? | 00:17:20
A few years back a world-renowned pizza consultant (yes there’s such a thing) proclaimed that Portland might have the best pizza scene in the country. So, of course, that received a lot of backlash. But then just a couple of months ago, a travel blog proclaimed Ken’s Artisan Pizza as the second-best pizza IN THE WORLD.
Today on the show, host Claudia Meza talks with local pizza expert, Blaine Bartholomew. You might have already seen his Instagram account where he's documented Portland's pizza scene since 2014. Or maybe you’ve been to one of his pizza pop-ups. Blaine knows pizza, but more specifically, Blaine knows Portland pizza.
So today we’re asking him, is our pizza really that good?

06 Feb 2023 | What Old Town Needs, Instead of Sweeps | 00:21:05
Conversations about crime or homeless encampments often focus on one symbolic neighborhood: Old Town. The district has a long history as Portland's official Chinatown, but because of historic city neglect, rising crime, and rising rents, many businesses have been forced to relocate. Plus, since the pandemic, this struggling district has seen a lot more people living on the streets. Today we’re talking with Scott Kerman, Executive Director of Blanchet House. He has a ground-level view of what’s working and what isn’t in the neighborhood.

The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission is under a lot of scrutiny after some of its officials were caught hoarding rare bottles of liquor for themselves. Some are even calling for the complete dissolution of the organization — Oregon is one of only 17 states in the country where alcohol is controlled by the state government. Today, we’re talking with bartender Mike Norwood of The Garrison, who deals with the OLCC every day and says some of their policies are outdated. Should Oregon ditch the OLCC?

Natural wine’s popularity has exploded in recent years, especially here in Oregon. But does it deserve all the hype, or is it just another trend? On Thursdays, we chat about food and drink on City Cast Portland, and today our host Claudia Meza is talking with Brent Braun, the sommelier at OK Omens – the self-proclaimed “wine-focused restaurant” and one of this year’s national James Beard Award semifinalists. 13 Mar 2023 | The True Cost of Parking in Portland | 00:21:38
If you feel like it’s getting harder and harder to find a parking space in Portland, you’re not crazy: at the beginning of the year, Oregon adopted new laws that have reduced the number of parking spaces some new developments need to build. And the city could do away with ALL requirements that new buildings provide parking later this year. But with new buildings popping up all over the city, what tools does the city have to distribute curb space equitably? Today on the show, lead producer John Notarianni talks with Catie Gould of the Sightline Institute. She’s a senior researcher who focuses on transportation.

03 Apr 2023 | Should We Stop Paying the Arts Tax? | 00:24:11
It’s that time of year again when the city sends out semi-threatening letters reminding you to pay your $35 arts tax. If you forgot, back in 2012, we voted overwhelmingly in favor of this tax, which supplements art education in public schools and funds art programming in our city. But the moment it passed, it seemed most of us regretted our decision. Even larger arts organizations that petitioned for it claimed they saw less money than before the tax was passed.
Today on City Cast Portland, host Claudia Meza talks with Helen Daltoso, the director of grants for the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) – one of the main organizations that help distribute funding from the tax. Helen explains how it all works and why this tax still benefits our city.

04 Apr 2023 | Why Portlanders Are Biking Less | 00:22:43
Portland and bicycling are synonymous. We’re known for our strong biking culture and are repeatedly crowned the most bike-friendly city in the United States. So it’s disorienting to hear the Portland Bureau of Transportation report that bike ridership declined by almost 35% between 2019 and 2022.
Some think the drop in cycling is due to the pandemic or safety concerns. But Jonathan Maus, the editor of Bike Portland, believes Portland gave up on biking nearly a decade ago for reasons that go beyond safety. Today on City Cast Portland, host Claudia Meza is talking with Jonathan about why Portlanders are biking less, and what it’s going to take to get us back on our bikes.

05 Apr 2023 | A Day at the Punk Rock Mall (aka Lloyd Center) | 00:23:54
Every few years rumors start up that the Lloyd Center is shutting down. But sometime last year, a new buzz began growing around the space...and people started affectionately referring to it as the “Punk Rock Mall.” Local vendors started opening smaller, more eclectic pop-up shops, from homemade clothing stores to record shops and communal gaming spaces. Local bands began playing, parties were getting thrown, and TikToks about secret roller disco events at the empty Marshalls were being shared.
So today on the show, host Claudia Meza and audio producer Giulia Fiaoni head to the mall to find out who’s behind these changes at the Lloyd Center and what its future holds.
Guests:
Salvador Ybarra from Euphoria
James Lucas Jones, owner of Brickdiculous
Eric Mast, co-owner of Dreem Street

13 Apr 2023 | Can Portland’s Food Scene Handle Bad Reviews? | 00:26:24

We ask two top critics: Michael Russell from the Oregonian and Brooke Jackson-Glidden from Eater Portland.

He captured the hearts of fans and the club with his stunts: hanging from rafters, climbing 100 ft poles, and slicing logs. We’re talking with him about his time with the club and the deeply personal meaning behind the song that’s been sung at the 80th minute of every game since 2004.

02 May 2023 | Why Testing Drugs Is Dicier Than Drug Possession In Portland | 00:16:39
Oregon has seen a big increase in overdoses in recent years as street drugs laced with synthetic opioids like fentanyl have flooded our communities. But while we passed laws decriminalizing drug possession in Oregon a few years ago, having the tools to test the safety of those drugs comes with stiffer penalties under state law right now.
Today on City Cast Portland, we’re looking at a new law the state is considering that aims to change that. Lead producer John Notarianni talks with Dean Shold, the co-founder of the nonprofit FentCheck, about how greater access to $1 testing strips could save lives.

04 May 2023 | How Oregon Made Food Writer James Beard Legendary | 00:20:04
Many Portlanders don’t know that one of the most influential chefs and food writers of the 20th century was born and raised in our city. They might know about the prestigious James Beard food awards, but not much about the man himself…like how this openly gay man living in an age of rampant homophobia started modern food culture as we know it.
Today on City Cast Portland, we’re going to change all of that. In honor of James Beard’s birthday (which is tomorrow, May 5th), host Claudia Meza is talking with his biographer, John Birdsall. John wrote The Man Who Ate Too Much: The Life of James Beard, and he’s here to introduce us to a wild, wild life cultivated and grown right here in Portland, Oregon.

08 May 2023 | Portland’s Leading Human Extinctionist | 00:18:23
A lot of the news headlines on the rapid growth of artificial intelligence have prophesized a doomsday scenario where computers take over and humanity goes extinct. The Pacific Northwest has a long and complicated history with nuclear power. We have two decommissioned power plants, not to mention all the radioactive waste they left behind. Worrying about melting nuclear reactors or contaminated groundwater feels so 1950s. But here we are in 2023, with NuScale Power, a Portland-area company promising a brighter future and cleaner source of energy in the form of small modular reactors (SMRs).
Today on City Cast Portland, host Claudia Meza is talking with Jan Haaken, a clinical psychologist and professor emeritus at Portland State University. She’s made a documentary called Atomic Bamboozle that draws from lessons of the past to address the production of SMRs in the Pacific Northwest.

We’re getting into summer, which historically is when gun violence picks up in our city. Last summer, Portland launched the Safe Summer PDX pilot intervention program that funded five community-based organizations, including Love is Stronger led by Lionel Irving. Across the board, the initiative was a success, but the city isn’t re-upping its investment. Today on City Cast Portland, Lionel explains why organizations like his need continual investment from our city and community if we want to see safer streets.
