16 Mar 2022 | A Panoply of Pausals with Jennifer Weedon-Palazzo and Monique Cupid | 01:09:42
Jennifer Weedon-Palazzo, creator of MomCave TV, and Monique Cupid of Brown Skin Green Beauty are both brilliant content creators who are going through "some sort of pausal thing". Jennifer's mission to provide a community for moms who need a humorous outlet and Monique's drive to encourage women of color to be proactive in their health by using clean and nontoxic makeup and skincare are going strong, regardless of the fact that no doctor has offered them solutions for their night sweats and hormonal mood swings. Join us as we chat with them about the movie musicals that made us, the discovery that there are no grownups, and the most important topic of all: what does the word "panoply" mean and how should we pronounce it? 13 Apr 2022 | Ashwagandha is Not a Country with Kristin Johnson and Maria Claps | 01:01:26
Functional nutritionist Kristin Johnson and functional health coach Maria Claps are the co-founders of Wise and Well, where they work with peri-menopausal and menopausal women in both one-on-one and group formats to create fundamental hormonal and whole health transformations. They joined our conversation "feeling salty", and we got to reap the benefits as they went off on how access to HRT is impaired by the Big Pharma-controlled government, how low Estradiol should NOT be taken lightly because it puts you at risk for cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis, AND how the "mommy wine" and Cheetos need to GO. Whether or not you agree with them on that last directive, it is empowering AF to listen to women who don't tiptoe around their strong opinions and who take action to help people in the process. There is also plenty of fun to be had as Ellie and Julia discuss whether packing for a vacation should include collagen supplements or a bikini, and how penises on TV can be hypnotic. She is also the host and founder of the popular storytelling night, Generation Women, which Ellie has performed in and which we wholeheartedly love and recommend. At the time of this recording, Georgia's wife was very pregnant with the human who is now their daughter, and though Georgia has not yet had to contend with symptoms or behaviors related to her own hormonal changes, she had some amusing things to say about pregnancy hormones. 18 May 2022 | #ihadanabortion - A CTD Bonus Episode! | 00:34:09
Can you use "Covid" and "abortion" in the same sentence? We can and we did. More on that in today's special bonus episode where we talk about Julia's abortion, Ellie's mother's pre-Roe abortion, and Ellie's grandmother's illegal abortion in 1960's London... a discussion that was inspired by the current climate as well as Alison Leiby's one-woman show, "Oh God, A Show About Abortion." If you too are feeling white hot rage in reaction to the SCOTUS draft decision leak along with fear and trepidation as we face the approaching dystopian hell-scape, this episode is for you! 03 Aug 2022 | Meet the Fibroids with Aileen Weintraub | 00:55:47
Aileen Weintraub is an award-winning author, journalist, and editor, as well as the human home to three giant fibroid tumors. The discovery of these many years ago led to several months of forced bed rest during her pregnancy, but the silver lining (for us) was that the ordeal inspired her to write Knocked Down: A High-Risk Memoir. We devoured this book in about a week because it is hilarious, relatable, and compelling. You should buy a copy right now, but first, listen to our chat with Aileen, learn how Ellie literally gaslit her son about her own rectal gas, and enjoy Julia's continuing angst over the lack of a perimenopausal pamphlet. We didn't know it was possible to find a pair of women willing to discuss boobs and vaginas and poop in as vivid detail as we do, but the universe granted us Ashley Hearon Smith and Keri Sotaro, and we couldn't be happier. Co-hosts of the popular Momtourage podcast, these hilarious women are known to drop a plethora of f-bombs about parenting, thus making them the relatable mom group rejects you didn’t know you needed. This episode covers the magical combo platter of postpartum AND perimenopausal hormones, the mental health issues associated with being a new mom, and the unique scent of a grandmother's vajayjay. 06 Jul 2022 | Twice a Week Until Death Do You Part with Dr. Rachel Rubin | 01:04:36
Our heads have officially exploded, people. Dr. Rachel Rubin is a board-certified urologist and sexual medicine specialist who dropped so much knowledge and helpful information into one conversation that our puny little brain-sponges got super-soaked. Listen to learn about the two little-known FDA-approved drugs that actually help women's libidos with no negative side effects, why you should be using local vaginal estrogen twice a week for the rest of your life, and how even a doctor can agree with us that the field of medicine is a disgusting dumpster fire of brokenness. As if that weren't enough, we also talk about the Grow Your Clit Movement, Covid Hemorrhoids, and what the hosts never thought they'd do in their 20's that they have done now. Michele Carlo and Sheria Mattis take us on the most terrific tangents, touching on Nuyorican vs. Jamaican culture, getting pounded by strap-ons after menopause, and the wild world of foot worship, all while dropping deep insightful wisdom that makes us scream YASSSSS! We also adopt the word "casseroles" as our new favorite euphemism, shake our fists at a male gyno's incompetence regarding the copper IUD, and even give you some new old songs to add to your playlist. 31 Aug 2022 | Stop Shoulding All Over Yourself with Liz Applegate | 00:54:19
Liz Applegate is a life coach and fellow podcaster, whose show "Midlife Schmidlife" was born when she googled the term "midlife" and what came back was "the wrong side of 40". After talking to Liz, we believe she is on the right side of just about everything. Listen as we discuss the concept of "shoulding", undiagnosed postpartum depression, and whether 50-somethings should exclusively be wearing caftans. Emotions run the gamut as Ellie wants to be Liz's new bestie, and Julia gets extra feisty as she invents "Smelly Pirate Whore Island" and then unpacks the new 2022 North American Menopause Society's position on Hormone Replacement Therapy and whether or not it causes breast cancer. 14 Sep 2022 | We're Smart. We're Educated. We're Grown-Ass Women. with Laura Stratte and Jacqueline Giannelli | 00:59:31
If you're like us, you have been frustrated with the lack of adequate perimenopause and menopause care provided (or NOT provided) by your current medical team. Enter Elektra Health, a digital health company with a mission to smash the menopause taboo by empowering women with evidence-based education, care & community. We were lucky to speak with Laura Stratte, their Program & Operations Manager, and Jacqueline Giannelli, one of their founding Nurse Practitioners who has been treating Julia's symptoms with much success. These ladies are all about education and empowerment, offering women honest risk-assessments and treatment options, and letting them lead the charge in their own menopausal healthcare journey. All of this may sound very medical and therefore serious in tone, but don't let that fool you. As always, there was plenty of laughter as we talked about the audacity of women daring to have a libido, the need for a webcam speculum in women's telehealth, and avocado tools. 12 Oct 2022 | What's Gonna Happen to My Vagina, Auntie? with Omisade Burney-Scott | 01:14:31
Omisade-Burney Scott is the coolest. She is the creator/curator of The Black Girls’ Guide to Surviving Menopause, a multimedia project engaged in culture and narrative shift work which includes, among other things, a podcast, a zine titled Messages From The Menopausal Multiverse, and the Say More Card Deck, which is a collection of conversation and journaling prompts that empower you to deepen your relationships with people in, preparing for, or supporting loved ones through menopause and aging — as well as your relationship with yourself. And that's not even all of it. We were a little intimidated by her accomplishments, confidence, and impeccable style, but after talking to her, we felt like we had been friends for years. Omi gives advice on happily controlling your doctor's appointments regardless of your personality type, nerds out with Julia about Quantum Physics, and confesses that when your hair turns grey, it turns grey EVERYWHERE. 28 Sep 2022 | Meditating Calms Our Tits with Mark Price | 01:08:42
Does the idea of meditating make you want to roll your eyes? Take a nap? Punch yourself in the face? We get it, and so does Mark Price. Our first ever male guest humbly joins us to talk about Vedic Meditation, also known as TM (Transcendental Meditation), and how incorporating this practice into your daily routine can help with stress, sleep disturbances, aggression, and many of the other perimenopausal symptoms we often discuss. If you're thinking this is too "woo woo" for you, too time-consuming, or that you can just use an app on your phone and get the same results, please give the episode a listen. Mark has an amazing sense of humor and is not trying to be your guru, and what he has to say may be the thing that convinces you to incorporate what has been a life-changing practice for both Ellie and Julia. 26 Oct 2022 | It's OK to Say "Menopause" on TV with Tamsen Fadal and Jo Lamarca Mathisen | 00:54:54
Tamsen Fadal and Jo Lamarca Mathisen call themselves Meno Sisters. They hit it off after a mutual friend "thrust them together" because of how much they both seemed to enjoy talking about menopause, and have remained extremely close ever since. Tamsen is an Emmy award-winning journalist and NYC news anchor who recently created #MenopauseTok on TikTok to bring creators together to share their menopause journey, and Jo (who has also won a few Emmys!) is the former Executive Producer of Today with Hoda & Jenna. They are now working together on a documentary called It’s Not Me…It’s (Me)nopause. We are thrilled to have them on the show for the second half of Menopause Awareness Month because, like us, they value the importance of spreading essential information about women's health in midlife, and they do it with humor wherever possible. We talk about the difficulties of working in television while experiencing brain fog, hot flashes, and anxiety, we ponder the discrepancy in our mental age and the age of our knees, and we spout off pithy aphorisms best suited for wall art made of wood. 09 Nov 2022 | The Currency of Youth and Cleavage with Rachel Fine | 01:03:37
Ever heard of Shittens? They are disposable, mitten-shaped moist wipes that were created because "no one wants poop on their hands". Rachel Fine, our dear friend of over 20 years, is one of the inventors of Shittens, but she's so much more than that! You might know her as host of various shows on Howard Stern TV, reporter for Travel Channel's Paranormal Paparazzi, singer and songwriter of the album "Own Your Own", chief ambassador of the MacDella Cooper Foundation, and co-owner of the Gigglewaters Social Club & Screening Room in the Tampa Bay area. She also has two kids and at least that many pets. As if that weren't enough to cover, Rachel is here to tell us how her pesky varicose veins led to the discovery of a rare vascular condition called May-Thurner Syndrome. This is potentially life-saving information for our listeners, as the condition disproportionately affects women and is usually not found until after someone has died! We also talk about burnout, IV Ketamine treatments, and how your career shouldn't define you. It's easy to bounce from topic to topic when you're bouncing with your bestie. Be one of the helpers! 23 Nov 2022 | Rock Stars Go Through Menopause Too with Kay Hanley and Elizabeth Hanley-Grande | 01:17:57
Ellie was hanging out with a few of her friends when she overheard one of them talking about growing up with a sister who was in a famous rock band. Ellie said, "I didn't know this about you! Who is your sister?" Ellie then learned that her friend, Elizabeth Hanley-Grande, is the younger sister of Kay Hanley, lead singer of the band Letters to Cleo, whose hit single "Here and Now" was featured on the Melrose Place soundtrack and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Singles chart right around the time when Ellie was a senior in high school, making it one of her go-to rock anthems. Mind. Blown. Fast forward to the amazing idea to have our first ever SISTERS episode! We talk about what it was like growing up in a house with five women sharing one bathroom, having a mother who was very scientific about the body but very Catholic about premarital sex, and whether one's menopausal journey does or does not mirror that of one's sisters. We also touch on aging in the music industry, firing your doctors when they are crap, and how it's possible to NEVER see your sister's boobs. Listen to this episode and then go listen to Kay's music. 07 Dec 2022 | Up the Hatch with Sari Botton | 01:00:47
Sari Botton is a bestselling author, editor, and teacher with decades of experience, and we got to benefit from that life experience through engaging in a delightful AF chat with her. We discuss how the idea for Oldster Magazine came to her in a dream, how it took her a long time to stop people-pleasing and come into her own, and how she uses a multi-purpose cream called Egyptian Magic for a true MULTITUDE of purposes. She also shares how a doctor refused to tell her the proper name for her "spongey uterus" and how she demanded to keep her ovaries in order to avoid going into surgical menopause. You know how we love stories of women advocating for themselves, so listen closely and take note. If the above isn't enough to entice you, listen to us talk about our facial hair/zit/wrinkle combo and how you should NOT put tobacco into your vagina to quit smoking. (But you knew that, right?) 21 Dec 2022 | Scheduling Our Farts - A CTD 2022 Wrap-Up | 00:44:18
Listeners... we're really going for it on our year-end wrap-up. At this point, we assume you have been listening regularly and that you don't need us to review every single guest we've loved and every lesson we've learned, so we decided to have a blast going rogue. Join us as we roll a set of sexy dice given to Ellie by her husbo, we review a map of porn fetishes broken down by U.S. state (sent to Julia by HER husband), and perform a dramatic reading of a particularly contentious email exchange with a potential guest who... spoiler alert... never appeared on the show. We also talk about drinking the "Stupid Juice" served to us by the medical community, our biggest surprises of 2022, and reveal some of our plans for 2023. 04 Jan 2023 | Laughing and Peeing and Peeing and Laughing with Dr. Shoma Datta-Thomas | 01:01:17
There are so many different issues that can affect us in midlife, and it can be frustrating to try and find medical professionals who can address more than one of these at a time. Modern Age is a New York City-based longevity clinic offering expert, proactive care for how you look and how you feel. Here to tell us more about what they offer is Dr. Shoma-Datta-Thomas, whose experience treating complex gynecological conditions has informed her philosophy around providing highly personalized care that combines cosmetic appearance with health optimization. We take a deep dive into many issues, including peeing when you laugh or cough, using Intravaginal Radio Frequency to help alleviate vaginal discomfort , and how, according to Julia, the layered complexities of midlife sex can resemble a stinky onion. We laugh a lot and therefore we pee a lot, so prepare to wet some pants as you listen to this one. Don't say we didn't warn you. Be one of the helpers! 18 Jan 2023 | Sticky Wickets with Heather Corinna | 01:18:23
We like to think that if we had written a book, it would be Heather Corinna's What Fresh Hell is This?: Perimenopause, Menopause, Other Indignities, and You. Heather writes about "the pause" with all of the humor and realness you would expect from a title like that, but what makes the book so unique is its inclusivity. And if that word makes you think this episode is going to spew preachy wokeness all over you, think again. Heather schools us on things like "ableism" and "othering" without placing preciousness on any of it. In fact, we laugh more than we don't, and a cackle-filled interview is what we consider podcast gold. We also discuss Ellie's latest symptom of itchy skin, and Julia's misdiagnosis of Herpes Simplex 1. So grab your creams and salves and cozy up for a good time. Be one of the helpers! 01 Feb 2023 | I've Run Out of Cope with Emily Barclay | 01:02:13
When Emily Barclay learned that the word "perimenopause" applied to her, she went online to seek out help and support and found that it simply didn’t exist. Instead of dissolving into a pool of her own hormonal tears and sweat, she set up Perimenopause Hub, bringing together experts across different disciplines from around the world and creating a community where women could feel less alone. As if that and her pink and turquoise hair weren't cool enough, she prides herself on having shunned the stereotypical forms of adulting and lives in the UK with her partner, five dogs, and 14 hives of bees. We talk about the importance of tracking your cycle and symptoms, the power of setting boundaries, and how a hug can help when you've run out of cope. 15 Feb 2023 | Have You Ever Heard of Pill Goggles? with Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein | 01:09:18
Ricki Lake (yes, THAT Ricki Lake) and Abby Epstein have worked together on some groundbreaking documentaries which you should watch immediately if you haven't yet done so. The Business of Being Born changed the way we looked at birthing options and medical interventions, and their most recent collaboration, The Business of Birth Control, examines the complex relationship between hormonal birth control and women’s health and liberation. Both women are brilliant and down-to-earth, and we loved talking to them about their films, their friendship, and their aging journey. We hope we didn't humiliate ourselves when we asked them to "lick each other's buttholes", which is our weird way of saying "give each other complements". March is Sleep Awareness Month. Who knew? Our new favorite sleep expert knew! Morgan Adams is a holistic sleep coach for women, whose clients refer to her as their "sleep soulmate". Poor sleep is one of the major complaints we hear from women in midlife, and Morgan offers us potential solutions that are easy to implement and won't cost you a dime. If you're like us, you have tried everything to get the kind of sleep you got in your youth, so it's well worth listening to Morgan talk about the difference between natural sleep and the kind you get when you take a sleeping pill, how what you eat and when you eat it can affect your sleep, and how that glass of wine that makes you feel tired is actually detrimental to your sleep quality. 15 Mar 2023 | Always Blooming with Margit Detweiler | 00:50:15
Margit Detweiler is the epitome of cool. A survivor of ovarian cancer, she embraced her post-chemo white hair, styled it into a punk pixie, and sealed it with a bold lip. But her coolness goes far deeper than her outward style. Margit is the founder of TueNight, a platform dedicated to amplifying the stories of Gen-X women, and president of Gyrate Media, an award-winning content strategy and editorial development firm. This three-time Webby honoree gave us her honest opinion on the term "Grandfluencers", offered reccomendations for what music we should be listening to right now, and helped us debate the true meaning of "wet leg". 12 Apr 2023 | Do What Makes Your Balls Sing with Sabina Vajraca and Flora Natalia Diaz | 01:19:17
Sometimes we bring you medical experts or health and wellness specialists, and other times we interview women with fascinating backgrounds and unique experiences in hopes that you might relate, feel seen, and if something funny comes up, laugh. This is one of those episodes. Sabina Vajrača is a Bosnian-American director/writer/producer who immigrated to the U.S. as a war refugee, and her dear friend Flora Natalia Diaz is a Jewish-Uruguayan actor, and one of those moms whose pregnancy was so ridiculously referred to as "geriatric". We talk about the trauma that comes from being affected by war, the life-changing mental health benefits of therapy, meditation, and mindfulness, and how you can have a midlife crisis even if you've followed your dreams. You will be touched by friendship, inspired by resilience, and possibly ruined for life when you hear a hemorrhoid story for the ages. Seriously... we thought we'd heard it all until this one. You've heard of CBD, but what about CBG? CBN? PHA? Katelynn Nguyen, founder of Willow Kay, is here to teach us about all of it. Willow Kay is a green and clean wellness and skincare company offering a variety of formulations to help improve sleep, care for problematic skin, and induce calm. Not only are Katelynn's products devoid of chemicals and endocrine disruptors, her packaging is entirely eco-conscious, having created the world’s first backyard compostable cosmetic jar that can break down into organic matter at any stage during its existence whether it’s on land or water. Katelynn started this business in part to help her niece Willow, who suffered from chronic atopic dermatitis as an infant and had sensitivities to traditional medications. If that sounds like the sweetest thing you've ever heard, you will love listening to Katelynn talk about her genuine passion for making good, earth-friendly products, even when it's hard. 26 Apr 2023 | Aging is Not an Inevitable Decline with Dr. Vonda Wright | 01:02:12
When we saw Dr. Vonda Wright's medical specialty - orthopedic sports medicine surgeon specializing in shoulder, hip and knee arthroscopy for athletes and active people of all ages - we knew that she would have a lot to contribute to our ongoing conversation about the effects of perimenopause on all of our different body parts. However, we had no idea that we would be having a chat with one of the most upbeat, inspiring women we have ever had the pleasure of interviewing, and that we would gain new perspectives and attitudes about what it means to age well. It's no surprise that Dr. Vonda is therefore a public speaker in high demand, as well as the author of 5 books with titles like Guide to THRIVE: 4 Steps to Body, Brains and Bliss and Fitness After 40: How to Stay Strong at Any Age. She is a powerhouse of energy with great tips on optimizing many important aspects of your life, and she isn't afraid to use curse words! 07 Jun 2023 | I Choose Me with Dr. Stacia Alexander | 00:58:57
When we met Dr. Stacia Alexander at a menopause symposium, we were instantly drawn to her energy, magnetism, and hot-pink-suit-wearing confidence. A seasoned psychotherapist, she has worked with professional women helping them understand that the journey to success does not make them immune to emotional and cognitive changes. Her most recent work focuses on the importance of accessing mental health care early, and she has even written a book that we wish we had read almost 30 (!!!) years ago: 10 + Things I Wish I Knew About Mental Health in College. We loved talking to Dr. Alexander about her use of testosterone as part of her menopause hormone therapy, her decision to become "sugar sober", and when it's time to press the Emergency Stop Button and take stock of your life. Get ready for lots of inspirational phrases that won't make you roll your eyes, but WILL make you want to get up and go dancing. What's the opposite of an energy vampire? 24 May 2023 | They're Coming for Our Vibrators with Lizz Winstead | 01:01:12
It's our 50th episode and we are celebrating in style! Lizz Winstead is a name that we have had on our "dream guest" list since we first brainstormed this podcast, and wonder of wonders, our dream came true. Co-creator of The Daily Show and co-founder of Air America Radio, Lizz is a legendary comedian and writer who is a badass in every sense of the word. She is currently devoting her energy to activism, having founded Abortion Access Front, co-hosting their podcast Feminist Buzzkills, and spearheading Operation Save Abortion, an ongoing campaign beginning with a daylong virtual training session for thousands of new abortion rights activists nationwide. Lizz energized us, lit a fire under our asses, laughed with us about Ron DeSantis's weird white boots, and told us a great story about Ted Cruz and dildos. As if that weren't enough, we got to hear from some of YOU who left us lovely voicemails in honor of our 50th. Have a listen and see if your voice is featured, and if you want to get us a present, share this episode with your friends. You'll be doing our podcast AND women's rights a huge service. 21 Jun 2023 | Where is the Menopause Section? with Jamie Phillips | 00:56:40
Jamie Phillips is a mensch. A seasoned nonprofit professional, she is grateful to have had the opportunity to provide services to uplift immigrants, refugees, isolated older adults, returning citizens, people who are unhoused, those experiencing mental health challenges, and those recovering from addiction. She was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer five months into the pandemic, and has since become passionate about amplifying the experiences of queer and gender expansive folks who experience breast/chest cancer and sudden menopause. We had such a good conversation with her, covering everything from the lack of ritual around the menopause transition, to the sometimes bizarre rituals when a child gets their first menstrual period, to what menopause care might look like by the time Gen Z is going through it, to the lack of a menopause section in the sex shop to - perhaps most importantly - the lack of inclusivity in menopause conversations, care, and even marketing. We also cover an unfortunate event involving a zipper and Ellie's belly, and we learn about how both hosts' moms responded when they got their first periods. Good times. Be one of the helpers! 05 Jul 2023 | Tap That with Sarah Louise Lilley | 00:59:12
Have you ever heard of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) also known as "Tapping"? Sarah Louise Lilley became an EFT Practitioner after her husband's stroke, and she is here to tell us more about that life-changing day, to explain EFT, and dispel any misconceptions you might have about it. If you're looking for a simple tool that can help reframe negative mindsets, help you calm yourself in a moment of distress, and help you cope with frustration over your newfound peri-menopausal symptoms, this episode is for you. We also touch on the unusual theatrical experience where Sarah and Ellie met, Sarah and Julia's love of horses, and a beloved British condiment that you may not have heard of, but which would make a great name for a stallion. 19 Jul 2023 | Single People Deserve Good Knives with Shani Silver | 01:04:25
Singlehood is not a broken state that requires fixing. This is the core message of our guest, Shani Silver, who deleted her dating apps in 2019 and has been infinitely happier ever since. Shani reminds us that dating apps are a for-profit industry that stand to benefit from keeping you single rather than helping you find love, and they often deplete your self worth and mental health. Author of the fantastic book A Single Revolution: Don't Look for a Match. Light One. and host of A Single Serving Podcast, Shani firmly believes that you can enjoy your life as a single human while still hoping for a partnership. But this episode is not just for the singles out there! Shani helps people in couples reframe how they view their single friends and family members, and as a result of reading her book, we have personally stopped asking questions like "How's dating life?" or "Can I please fix you up with someone?" Shani offers zero apologies for living her life exactly as she wants to, and we offer zero apologies for Ellie's graphic colonoscopy story and Julia's description of her nuclear meltdown. 02 Aug 2023 | My Hot Flashes Could Power Brooklyn with Dr. Aiesha Turman | 01:04:13
Dr. Aiesha Turman does so many things and she does them with JOY. She is the kind of teacher that students keep in touch with for the rest of their lives, which is a rare and special thing. We totally get the appeal, because we had the best time talking to her about Reiki, Afrofuturism, literature, her work on the incredible award-winning documentary Crip Camp, and the differences AND similarities between the hormonal transitions of her mother, her daughter, and herself. You'll also get to hear about Ellie graduating from her therapist, the time Julia sharted the bed, and how strangers need to mind their own business and not offer random opinions to people they know nothing about. So much good stuff, PLUS a discount code for listeners who want to try Reiki with Dr. Turman. (You want to try it. Trust us.) https://circlingthedrainpodcast.buzzsprout.com/ Be one of the helpers! 16 Aug 2023 | A Bubble Bath for Your Brain with Dr. Wendy Suzuki | 01:00:47
Dr. Wendy Suzuki is a professor of Neural Science and Psychology and author of two incredible books, Good Anxiety and Healthy Brain, Happy Life. Her TED talk, The Brain-Changing Benefits of Exercise, has more than 60 million views, making it the 2nd most viewed TED talk of 2018. In spite of our awe, we managed to pick her fancy brain about many things, like how hormonal changes can lead to increased anxiety, tips for building resilience and staying motivated to exercise, and what to do about "choking" (AKA brain farts or derping). She told us all about her concept of "micro flow", causing us to envision a tiny Flo from the Progressive commercials sitting on our shoulders. This is why she is the Dean of the College of Arts and Science at NYU and we are not! We also talk about Ellie going braless for the summer and Julia rubbing emu oil on her skin. 30 Aug 2023 | We Finally Got You a Pro Dom with Leoh Blooms | 01:00:35
Leoh Blooms is a queer, fluid, and nonbinary-trans trauma-informed mentor and Pro Dom. Everything they do in their practice focuses on intimacy, mental health, gender, sex, and practical self-care. They help clients aged 21 and up to create lives they don't need to hide from by offering various levels of support in a power dynamic format, using kink for fun and as a healing modality. Listen to Leoh talk about coming out at the age of 45, jumping through medical hoops when a gender fluid person needs medical care, and explain what a Pro Dom actually IS and DOES. In response, Ellie talks about working in an office located upstairs from an old-school dominatrix, and Julia explores the idea of using a rope-tying technique for self-soothing. 13 Sep 2023 | Vagina Science with Rachel E. Gross | 01:05:06
Rachel E. Gross is an award-winning science journalist who wrote an incredible book called Vagina Obscura which was a finalist for the 2023 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. Go ahead and be impressed, but do not be intimidated. Rachel will enthrall you with stories of outlandish treatments for ailments that plague people with female reproductive systems, including a personal tale involving rat poison and her own vagina. She takes us back through history to when the fallopian tubes were named after an Italian Catholic priest and when Freud decided that all "women's issues" were psychological. She discusses how medical terminology can be harmful, placing blame on the woman or the body part itself. If that's not enough to draw you in, listen as we realize that both Ellie and Julia know a ton about bacterial vaginosis, and in a delightful epiphany, Ellie gives the perfect name to the wall of vagina-inspired art in Rachel's home. 27 Sep 2023 | Women's Health Needs a Revolution with Dr. Maria Uloko | 01:03:41
Dr. Maria Uloko is fired up, and we are right there with her. As the first ever Black female Urology student at her university, she has been trailblazing for the entirety of her career. Dr. Uloko specializes in comprehensive sexual health which includes the medical and surgical management of ALL genders. She is considered a world leader in chronic pelvic pain and vulvar conditions, she believes in empowering her patients to take ownership of their sexual health by providing a shame-free space to ask questions and share their stories, and she seeks to close gaps in disparities of care and implement systems that promote diversity and inclusivity. She is also an international award winning researcher with a focus in vulvar health, most notably her research in defining how many nerves are in the human clitoris. (Can you believe that this number was not known until recently, when she and her colleagues embarked on a study?) She told us that the anatomy of the vulva is not taught in medical school, even to gynecologists, and that this lack of knowledge and adequate care is equivalent to malpractice against those with female anatomy. She wants to start a revolution to correct all of this nonsense, and we have pledged to be her soldiers. She also happens treat Julia's Adult ADHD, and in honor of ADHD Awareness Month, we asked her ALL of the questions. What is ADHD, and why do many women not discover this diagnosis until adulthood? How can someone have ADHD and be high-functioning and laser-focused all at once? What is the intersection between ADHD and perimenopause? When is it time to take medication to help treat it? Does Ellie have ADHD or is she merely addicted to the apps on her phone? 25 Oct 2023 | Going Commando with Blaire Postman | 00:41:13
Blaire Postman is a comedian who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and then embraced it as a super-power. She created a solo show called Lady ADHD: Hilariously Mind Blowing Observations from a Hyper-Insightful Brain. Due to a current medication shortage, we got to interview Blaire ten days into "going commando", and we talked about emotional dysregulation, song-stimming, and how a performance piece about a topic like ADHD can make audiences feel seen and not alone. We can relate to that for sure. We hope that you will relate to Ellie cursing at her son in a fit of perimenopausal aggression, and Julia's incredulousness at the fact that they only just invented a crash test dummy that mimics the female form. 08 Nov 2023 | Sad Vagina with Abigail Paul | 01:07:56
Germany-based comedian Abigail Paul says that co-host Ellie is her oldest friend. Not her most elderly friend, but the friend she has known the longest. She met co-host Julia a few years later, making all three of them VERY ELDERLY/OLD FRIENDS. That should entice you to listen to this episode, because richness of history makes for juicy conversation. Abigail moved to Germany as a young adult because she was "on the lam", trying to escape her abusive and narcissist mother, whose life and death inspired Abigail's award-winning solo show Involuntary Momslaughter. There are many wonderful stories in this episode, including the one about Abigail ignoring her fibroid tumors until she collapsed in a pharmacy and ended up in emergency surgery, the one where her gynecologist proclaimed her vagina her weakest organ, and the one where 18-year-old Abigail and Ellie sat together to take a pregnancy test after a condom broke. Also, all three people in this episode had birthdays in the last week, so listen and laugh and feel seen and celebrate with us! Be one of the helpers! 06 Dec 2023 | ENCORE: Like Daughter, Like Mother with Michelle MacDonald and Joan MacDonald | 00:58:46
For our first encore episode, we chose the inspiring pair of Michelle and Joan MacDonald. Not only are they glorious examples of what a healthy body can achieve after midlife, they seem to have an enviable mother-daughter bond that is beautiful to witness. These women broke the internet after Michelle, a body builder and transformation coach, guided her then 70-year-old mother through a process that resulted in life-changing weight loss and the subsequent elimination of a slew of health problems. Joan's before and after photos can be found at Train with Joan, and you should take a peek before listening to understand the full impact of what these women achieved together. 20 Dec 2023 | ENCORE: Twice a Week Until Death Do You Part with Dr. Rachel Rubin | 01:04:36
We chose this episode with Dr. Rachel Rubin as our final encore of the year because she is the person who has given us the most practical, valuable, and easily shareable information to help women with their genitourinary functions as they age. Dr. Rubin is a board-certified urologist and sexual medicine specialist who dropped so much knowledge and helpful information into one conversation that our puny little brain-sponges got super-soaked. 07 Feb 2024 | Life's Tough. Laugh More. with Kambri Crews | 01:01:59
How does a child of deaf adults who grew up in a tin shed with no running water or electricity witness her father commit a violent crime and then grow up to be the joyful owner of a comedy venue? Kambri Crews will tell you how! Author of the acclaimed New York Times best selling book Burn Down the Ground and sole owner and operator of Q.E.D. which was voted #1 comedy club in NYC by Time Out NY, Kambri is a damn delight. Her message, "Life's Tough. Laugh More." is evident as she chuckles about light things such as restaurant staff seeing her use sign language and then ignorantly handing her a menu in Braille, and heavy things such as her father attempting murder not once but twice. As Julia says, "If at first you don't succeed...". We also discuss gross habits like picking at your skin and chewing the inside of your own mouth, having to read the instructions for how to boil rice at least fifteen times, and how ice skating in midlife can result in the ass of your dreams. 06 Mar 2024 | The Ambassador of Fun with Robin Gelfenbien | 01:00:27
Lately, as we have gotten older and our preferences have changed, we have been wondering, "What is fun?" Robin Gelfenbien, the self-proclaimed Ambassador of Fun, is the perfect person to answer that question. Right out of college, Robin was chosen out of thousands of people to drive the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile, and her experience provided excellent fodder for her acclaimed solo show "My Salvation Has a First Name: A Wienermobile Journey”. She has had several other fun jobs from creator and producer of the storytelling series and podcast "Yum's the Word" to co-hosting the podcast "Hello Menopause" to producing Isaac Mizrahi's podcast "Hello Isaac". Robin inspires us with her stories of involving strangers in all kinds of fun, but we also talk about things like thinning hair and anxiety, two very common and un-fun symptoms of perimenopause. 05 Jan 2022 | How to Pinch a Loaf with Kelly Kane | 01:09:19
We thought we were going to talk to Kelly Kane about her 20+ years as a Pilates trainer and ease into a discussion about her new courses in female sexuality and aging, and while we did talk about these things, the conversation took twists and turns we never could have foreseen. We touched on topics such as crystals for the vagina, fishing rubber tires out of the rivers of Vermont, and Ellie and Julia's shared history of nakedness. What better way to start 2022? We're already calling it The Year of the C-Spot. (You'll have to listen to find out exactly what that means.) Be one of the helpers! 19 Jan 2022 | Who is Mary Penomause? with Alison Crockett and Cate Frazier-Neely | 01:10:02
Did you know that hormonal changes affect the sound of your voice? Did you know that the vagina and the throat are structurally similar? Did you know that the speculum your gyno uses was invented as a result of experiments done on enslaved Black women? Are we starting to sound like the little boy from Jerry Maguire? Is that an outdated reference, or is it the perfect reference for our target demographic? Don't answer any of that. Instead, listen to us chat with Cate Frazier-Neely and Alison Crockett, both singers and vocal teachers who have fascinating things to teach us about how our throats are affected by this party we call peri. We've been podcasting for 6 months now, so we decided to use this final episode of 2021 to review our primary perimenopausal complaints and discuss what remedies we have tried, what has worked, and what has not. 02 Feb 2022 | Sad, Fat, and Dry with Dr. Linda Dahl | 01:06:11
Who would think that an otolaryngologist could make us giggle like 12 year-olds at a slumber party, but that's exactly what happened with the fabulous Dr. Linda Dahl. You will hear a great deal of cackles, guffaws, and even a hearty snort as we cover the journey of this incredible woman who has excelled at enough careers to span several lifetimes. Learn about her work as one of the only female ringside fight doctors, her path from breastfeeding frustration to becoming an expert and author of two books on the topic, and her unique approach to confidence via the advice of a patient who also happened to be a dominatrix. Best of all, she reminds us that the symptoms of perimenopause can be so confusing that even a medical expert can be convinced that she's dying. Dying... of menopause. Be one of the helpers! 16 Feb 2022 | Like Daughter, Like Mother with Michelle MacDonald and Joan MacDonald | 00:58:29
Michelle and Joan MacDonald broke the internet after Michelle, a body builder and transformation coach, guided her then 70-year-old mother through a process that resulted in life-changing weight loss and the subsequent elimination of a slew of health problems. Joan's before and after photos can be found at Train with Joan, and you should take a peek before listening to understand the full impact of what these women achieved together. This is our first chat with a mother-daughter pairing, and we couldn't have found more mind-blowing specimens. Now excuse us while we go lift something... Be one of the helpers! 02 Mar 2022 | A Pap "Schmear" Does Not Involve Cream Cheese with Dr. Mandy Leonhardt | 01:00:02
German-born and UK-based Dr. Mandy Leonhardt may have a youthful face and a calm demeanor, but she is tired of putting up with bullsh*t. She inspires other women to take proper care of themselves via her integrative and holistic menopause clinic Hormone Equilibrium, hosting England's first Menopause Cafe, and by simply saying no to things she doesn't want to do. (Saying "no"... what a revelation!) In our delightful chat with Mandy we discuss habit stacking, people-pleasing, and all different kinds of buckets. We know what you're thinking. Buckets??? Just listen, Kittens. All will be explained. Be one of the helpers! SUBSCRIBE to this podcast on APPLE PODCASTS or SPOTIFY and leave us a review on APPLE PODCASTS.
30 Mar 2022 | My Face is Falling with Jennifer DeMaio | 00:55:03
Botox. Injectables. Fillers. Some of us get them and some of us don't, but most of us have opinions and MANY of us have misinformation. Join us for a fantastic chat with Jennifer DeMaio, a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C) and Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS) who is the founder and CEO of FACE Aesthetic Artistry, a medical aesthetics and medical-grade skincare practice. Listen as she teaches Julia things she didn't know about when and when NOT to wash her face, debunks Ellie's theory that Botox might make her face explode like a can of SpaghettiOs, and throws out terms like "blepharospasm" and "festoons" in a way that makes us all tingly inside. Whether you plan to age as naturally and gracefully as possible, or whether you want all of the needles in all of the places, this episode is for you. Be one of the helpers!
