24 Dec 2020 | 2020 Christmas Special | 01:27:42
Today program is our 2020 annual Christmas Special. Before we get into the details of the show I just want to again personally offer my thanks to the great team here at CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO including regular contributors Jason Drury, Eric Silver, and Robert Daniels. Randy Andrews had been part of the team for a while now with his ANIME SPECTACULAR program but I just wanted to once again say how happy I am that he has brought SOUNDTRACK ALLEY over to the network this year. We'll have one more episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY before the year is out featuring music from a classic film by a legendary composer. And of course, we can't forget the voice of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, Tim Burden. It’s been a tough year for everyone - not only here on the network - but all over the world. 26 Oct 2018 | The 1UpBeat with Eric Silver: Inaugural Episode - 2018 Video Game Scores | 01:34:48
Today’s episode on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO network is the long-awaited inaugural episode of our NEW orchestral video game show, THE 1UPBEAT with Eric Silver. The show is designed to showcase the very best symphonic music from the video game world and on today’s episode, Eric presents some of the very best music written for video games in 2018. On the program today you will hear music from OCTOPATH TRAVELER by Yasunori Nishiki, GOD OF WAR by Bear Mccreary, NI NO KUNI 2: REVENANT KINGDOM by Joe Hisaishi, MONSTER HUNTER WORLD by Tadayoshi Makino, THE BANNER SAGA 3 by Austin Wintory, and DRAGON QUEST 11 by Koichi Sugiyama. —— ERIC SILVER BIO: Eric Silver was eight years old when he first discovered the joy of movie scores. Like many, John Williams's Star Wars scores inspired a passion and determination to learn music. He worked hard to learn the trumpet by first playing along to these scores, determined to master the memorable melodies by Williams and his contemporaries. As Eric got older, popular movie scores started to take a less prominent and melodic approach, and video games were incorporating more live orchestrations. The melodies of Final Fantasy IV and others mimicked those sweeping movie scores of a now-bygone era. His focus had shifted away from movies as orchestration became the new standard in games. Suddenly, the memorable melodies and emotional magic of game music became his motivation to share it with as many people as possible. Today, as an ex-future music educator, Eric has conducted and arranged for game music concerts and written some of his own music for video games. The tradition of sharing a passion for this music continues with the premiere of The 1UpBeat, which explores some of the best orchestral game music from thirty years ago to today. —— Cinematic Sound Radio

23 Oct 2018 | Interview With Ghiya Rushidat | 01:04:51
Today's very special episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a conversation with one of film music's emerging talents. Born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Jordan, Ghiya Rushidat is one amongst the few female composers of Arab heritage working in her field. Now based in Los Angeles, Rushidat has worked and performed throughout the Middle East and Europe, playing in excess of 150 concerts over the years. After following a career as a concert pianist until 2008, Ghiya turned to composing and threw herself into the passion of composition. In 2014, Rushidat moved to the United States. Upon arriving, her first task was to compose the music for the short film, Pen of Mirrors, starring Eric Roberts. Her melodic, dissonant, and layered score gained critical praise. She has been working steadily and tremendously ever since, always inflexible in her pursuit to please her clients and understand their vision. Currently composing original soundtracks for a variety of plays, feature films, video games, short films, and TV spots, Ghiya Rushidat’s name is becoming a name to watch out for in the industry. In 2017, Ghiya Rushidat was the Winner of BMI Pete Carpenter Fellowship, a competitive residency for aspiring film, television, and video game composers. Rushidat's piece, "Fly and Flow", was chosen as the winning score by a distinguished judging panel that included such talent as Christopher Lennertz, Timothy Wynn, Ben Decter, Casey Kolb, Ed Rodgers, and John Kaefer. Ghiya is extremely proud of the fact that she has shattered stereotypes about women-both culturally and professionally. She will continue sharing her emotive and provocative scores with western and global audiences alike. In August 2018, Jason Drury talked to Ghiya Rushidat on Skype from her home in Los Angeles for CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, about her life, the events that have put her on the path to success, her career to date and her future ambitions. During the show, you will also be hearing some of Ghiya’s wonderful music. Visit Ghiya's web site at

22 Dec 2022 | The Flagship Show: 2022 Christmas Special | 02:05:18
In today's program, it's our 2022 Christmas Special. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018 and I want to thank personally J. Blake Fischa for making sure we did produce this show this year. I've been so ridiculously busy during the latter stages of this year that I didn't think I'd have time to put this together. I really thought that All Request Christmas was going to be our Christmas Special this year but Blake DM'd me on Twitter and ask if we were going to do the show. I said, "No". I got a reply back with just the letter "K". I know it's tough to reading tone online but I could just feel the disappointment. So, I slept on it, woke up the next day and wrote Blake back saying, "You know what... I got to thinking last night and I think we should still do the Holiday Celebration episode anyway. It's something that all of us at CSR can work on together. So, yes, we are going to do our annual Christmas show as well as the All Request Show." So there, you can thank Blake for this show and we will always put together an annual Christmas show for you from now on. I promise! Before we begin I just want to again personally offer my thanks to the great team here at Cinematic Sound Radio. 55 new shows went out this year including this one and not including any new shows that go up from now until the end of the year. We are almost 25,000 downloads away from 500,000 total downloads since we made this show a podcast... or at least as long as I've been tracking the show on Podtrac and Chartable. We are up 101,000 downloads since this time last year, which is incredible. We've been ranking in the top 200 all over the world. People really like the show and so I have to send out a big thanks to Jason Drury, Eric Silver, J. Blake Fichera, Robert Daniels, Randy Andrews, the voice of CSR Tim Burden, in-house composer David Coscina, and Ley Bricknell. And of course, I cannot forget you... the listener. Thank you very much for spending some time with us today! And a big shout out to the Cinematic Sound Radio Patreon family. It's been a great year conversing with you, getting to talk to some of you personally on the show and as well as sharing some of your favourite music on the podcast via the All Request Show, which is one of my favourite things ever in the 26-year history of the show. I can't wait to do more in 2023. As we did over the course of the past FIVE years, this show is a collaborative effort. Each participating host will get a segment of their own on the program to play whatever festival score they see fit. On today's program, seven CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST hosts join me again to celebrate the holiday season by playing Christmas-themed music from a wide variety of film, TV and video game scores. Join Robert Daniels from OBSCURE SCORES, Jason Drury from THE ARCHIVE & TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Ley Bricknell from FILMIC, J. Blake Fichera from SCORED TO DEATH RADIO, Randy Andrews from THE ANIME SPECTACULAR & THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Eric Silver from THE 1UPBEAT, the voice of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, Tim Burden and me, Erik Woods, for our annual Yuletide spectacular. On the show today, you are going to hear a wide variety of Christmas / Holiday / Winter themed music including DIDDY KONG RACING, FATE/GRAND ORDER. THE CHRISTMAS DRAGON, CLAUS FAMILY 3, CHRISTMAS CAROL: THE MOVIE, A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY. SANTA CLAUS: THE MOVIE and A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS. Merry Christmas and happy holidays! 12 May 2023 | The Essential Soundtracks - Star Trek: Generations | 02:14:59
Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the seventh movie in the series, STAR TREK: GENERATIONS. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail including such topics as the new uniforms, deleted scenes, Kirk's death, the destruction of The Enterprise D and more. Also covered in great length is Dennis McCarthy's underappreciated score. WARNING: We do talk about Star Trek: Picard Season 3 in this episode so if you haven't seen the new series yet, you've been warned; there are SPOILERS in this episode. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS was released on November 18, 1994. Malcolm McDowell joined cast members from the 1960s television show STAR TREK and the 1987 sequel series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION. In the film, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the USS Enterprise-D joins forces with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) to stop the villain Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying a planetary system in his attempt to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. The film was directed by TV veteran David Carson. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records. It had a generous amount of music on the album, close to 45 minutes worth with 16 minutes of Star Trek sound effects from the film. In November of 2012, GNP Crescendo released an expanded version of the score featuring two full CDs of music expanding the run time to OVER two hours. The score was recorded by Robert Fernandez at Paramount Pictures Scoring Stage M, McCarthy conducted the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. Mark McKenzie, William Ross, and Brad Warnaar provided orchestrations. The Executive Album Reissue Producer was Dennis McCarthy. The Executive Album Producers for GNP/Crescendo Records were Neil Norman and Melanie Clarkson. The Album Reissue Producers were Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson and Mark Banning. The Project Consultant was Lukas Kendall, with liner notes by liner notes by Jeff Bond and Lukas Kendall. The GNP Crescendo album is currently out of print! 24 Oct 2017 | 21st Anniversary - Custom Suites
On this week’s episode of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO, I will be celebrating the 21st anniversary of the program. With each anniversary program, I try to present a topic or theme that I haven’t explored in the past. With that in mind, I thought it might be interesting to present for you a few of my personal custom film music suites that I like to edit together in my spare time. I don’t create suites for every score in my collection but I have roughly 75-80 specially edited suites, which combine multiple cues into one easy to digested track that ranges from roughly 4 minutes in length to as long as 10 minutes. It’s a fun exercise and I hope you enjoy listening to my creations as much as I do. On today’s program you are going to hear 12 of those suites, which features music from THE AVENGERS by Joel McNeely, THE PROMISE by Klaus Badelt, BATMAN FOREVER by Elliot Goldenthal, PAYCHECK by John Powell, THE THREE MUSKETEERS by Michael Kamen, PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF by Christophe Beck, PETER PAN by James Newton Howard, THE ROCKETEER by James Horner, GODZILLA by David Arnold, SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW by Edward Shearmur, THE KARATE KID PART I AND II by Bill Conti and WARRIORS OF VIRTUE by Don Davis. We are only one day away from one of the best times of the year, Halloween. As we do each and every year on THE FLAGSHIP SHOW on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO NETWORK, we present a program dedicated the horror films; a genre which looks very kindly towards the composers writing the scores for them. A genre that essentially allows a composer to really express themselves and are encouraged to be heard and to manipulate the audience as much as possible. We have another outstanding line-up of scary scores to play for you; new and old including selections from THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (Davis), THE EMPTY MAN (Young), SCARY MOVIE (Kitay), I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (Debney), RAWHEAD REX (Towns), VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (Carpenter/Davis), THE HAUNTING (Searle), HORRORS OF THE BLACK MUSEUM (Schurmann) and THE MEDUSA TOUCH (Lewis) Special thanks to Varese Sarabande Records, Silva Screen Records and Hollywood Records for making portions of today's show possible. —— Cinematic Sound Radio is fully licensed to play music by SOCAN. In 2014, author, film studies academic, and film musicologist Emilio Audissino published the first edition of his book THE FILM MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS. In 2021, the book's second edition was published. In early June 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Emilio via Zoom at Linnaeus University, Sweden, where he was an Associate Professor. To commemorate the book's tenth anniversary, they discussed its origins and delved into John Williams' musical career, featuring music from many of the composer's most memorable scores. The film had its US premiere at SXSW before screening at New Directors/New Films. Prior to that, Simon worked with several prominent directors, including M. Night Shyamalan, Mary Harron, and Independent Spirit Award nominee Hossein Keshavarz. His latest score is for the HBO documentary THE WEIGHT OF GOLD from director Brett Rapkin, a feature on the mental health challenges that Olympic athletes often face. Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Phelps is the narrator and among the subjects, along with Shaun White, Bode Miller, Lolo Jones, Gracie Gold and others. The Weight of Gold was premiered on July 29 — when the 2020 Tokyo Games were set to begin before the event was postponed by the coronavirus pandemic. In August 2020, for the Cinematic Sound Radio Network, Jason Drury spoke to Simon Taufique via Zoom at his home in Manhatten, New York. During the interview, Simon talks about the weight of gold, how it evolved as circumstances changed throughout the production process with the rewarding end result, and his music career to date. Also during the show, you will be hearing music from Simon Taufique, in particular featuring his score for THE WEIGHT OF GOLD. Enjoy! 24 Dec 2023 | The Flagship Show: 2023 Christmas Special | 01:18:15
In today's program, it's our 2023 CHRISTMAS SPECIAL. We've been putting this show together annually since 2018. Before we begin, I want to personally offer my thanks to the great team here at the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST. Fourty-five new shows, including this one, went out this year, not including any new shows that go up until the end of the year. We passed the 500,000 downloads mark and we are 45,000 downloads away from 600,000 all time. We made it back to FM radio, albeit briefly. If I can remember correctly, only one episode went on the air at BUTE ISLAND RADIO before the s__t the fan! I’m hoping to get back on the FM dial sometime in 2024. I think that’s where the show ultimately belongs—at least a show with this format—so I just need to find a place that wants me. We've been ranking in the top 200 all over the world. Today we are #6 in Cyprus. Thanks to all of our listeners in Cyprus! The point is, people are still listening and I owe much of our success to ... Jason Drury, Eric Silver, J. Blake Fichera, Robert Daniels, Randy Andrew, the voice of CSR Tim Burden, in-house composer David Coscina, and Ley Bricknell. And of course, I cannot forget you... the listener... thank you very much for spending some time with us today! So let's get into the program, and as we did over the past SIX years, this show is a collaborative effort. Each participating host will get a segment of their own on the program to play whatever festival score they see fit. On today's program, four CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO PODCAST hosts join me again to celebrate the holiday season by playing Christmas-themed music from a wide variety of film, TV and video game scores. Join Jason Drury from THE ARCHIVE & TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, J. Blake Fichera from SCORED TO DEATH RADIO, Randy Andrews from THE ANIME SPECTACULAR & THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Eric Silver from THE 1UPBEAT, and me, Erik Woods, for our annual Yuletide spectacular. On the show today, you are going to hear selections from DEN FØRSTE JULEN I SKOMAKERGATA aka CHRISTMAS IN COBBLER STREET (Storaas), HOOK (Williams), ROCKY IV (Dicola), PREP AND LANDING (Giacchino), HOGWART'S LEGACY (Rakozy) and a special gift at the end of the show. 19 Nov 2024 | Talking Soundtracks: Interview with Christophe Beck | 01:30:46
Christophe Beck, an Emmy-winning film and television composer, has defined the sound of iconic productions such as FROZEN, THE HANGOVER franchise, THE MUPPETS and the cult classic series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Christophe via Zoom at his Los Angeles home near the end of September 2024. During the conversation, they talked about his career to date, being tutored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, his work on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and composing for the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE, including AGATHA ALL ALONG. But first, they discussed another of his recent scores, THE INSTIGATORS, which will be released on APPLE + in August 2024. Doug Liman directed the film, which stars Matt Damon and Casey Affleck as reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to steal a corrupt politician's ill-gotten gains. When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos. 02 Sep 2016 | Top 10 | Rejected or Unused Tracks
Welcome back to the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO TOP 10. Last week's inaugural episode was such a success that I'm proud to announce that this will be a new weekly program that I produce for you as I take you on a journey through my film music collection playing single tracks that fit a particular theme. This week's theme comes from Jason Drury, who wanted to hear my Top 10 favourite rejected scores. That's a great topic but I'll save that for a much longer episode. Instead, I decided to play tracks written by a composer, who had a cue or two rejected, replaced or was simply unused for whatever reason. On the program today, you will hear music from such composers as John Williams, Dave Grusin, Danny Elfman, Georges Delerue and much more. I want to thank all of my followers on Twitter and everyone at the Film Score Monthly message board for their invaluable assistance in helping me select the tracks for today's program. Please feel free to leave a comment or two in the comment section below. And if you have a suggestion for a future Top 10 episode please email me or send me a Tweet with suggestions. MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH MARRIAGE follows Zelma on her 23-year quest for perfect love and lasting marriage, set against a backdrop of historic events in Eastern Europe. Told from a woman’s point of view, the film blends historical, biological, societal, and emotional arcs with a lively sense of humour and musical numbers. This animated film for adults tackles the issues of love, gender norms, domestic violence, fantasies, and toxic relationships to propel a woman's journey toward independence and liberation. The score for the film is by composer, pianist, flautist, and music producer Kristian Sensini. 22 Jun 2016 | More Music of James Horner Part 1
On June 22, 2015, the world lost one of its greatest film music heroes. James Horner was only 61 one when he lost control of his S-312 Tucano MK1 turboprop and crashed 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles. James Horner’s loss was devastating. He was part of a holy trinity of film composers I grew up admiring. The others were John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I never thought that the day would came where only one of them would still be standing. Horner, a two time Academy Award winner, six time Grammy winner and IFMCA Award winner, had an uncanny knack for perfectly capturing the emotional core of a film with his patented musical textures and harmonies, which is still unmatched in film today. His list of legendary scores seems almost endless, however, on today’s program, and on the one year anniversary of his passing, we here at Cinematic Sound Radio will be presenting a special two part, four hour tribute to James Horner and his lesser known scores. On this first program you’ll hear music from such films as THE JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN, DAD, DEEP IMPACT, BEYOND BORDERS and more. Cinematic Sound Radio

The seventh episode of SOUNDTRACK ALLEY here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO is a discussion between Erik Woods and Randy Andrews about the film and score to the 1993 Steven Spielberg groundbreaking action/adventure film, JURASSIC PARK, based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Bob Peck, Martin Ferrero, BD Wong, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Joseph Mazzello and Ariana Richards The film takes place on Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond's grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island. The original score for the film was composed and conducted by John Williams, performed by The Hollywood Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. The original soundtrack recording was released on MCA Records in 1993 and was expanded by La La Land Records in 2017 that coupled this score along with Williams' other score in the series, THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK. British composer Stuart Hancock’s most recent work on the animated epic KENSUKE’S KINGDOM Kensuke’s Kingdom helps establish the children’s book adaptation as one of the year’s most sweeping and heartfelt stories. The film is a good old-fashioned adventure rendered in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation with a voice cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy, and Ken Watanabe. The story concerns a boy who is swept overboard during a storm on a worldwide sailing trip with his family and washes ashore on an island in the Pacific Ocean. While there, he realises someone is nearby, aiding him with his survival. The script for the film was by award-winning British scriptwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce based on the book by celebrated British author Sir Michael Morpurgo, who is most well-known for his book WAR HORSE, also adapted into an acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg. In November 2024, Jason Drury had the pleasure of speaking with Stuart Hancock via Zoom from his home in Leighton Buzzard, England. 18 Nov 2013 | Concert Music By Film Composers Part 2
On the program today you are going to hear a three hour plus program dedicated to music written for anything but film, TV and video games by film, TV and video game composers. It is not uncommon place for film composers to cross over and dabble in the concert hall. Many of the greatest Golden Age film composers actually got their start in the concert world – Erich Wolfgang Korngold, for instance, wrote many operas and symphonies years before scoring such films as THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD and THE SEA HAWK. Others like John Williams, James Horner, Miklos Rozsa, Danny Elfman, Cliff Eidelman, Bernard Herrmann – just to name a few – have also written spectacular and challenging music to be enjoyed away from the silver screen. This is actually CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO’s third CONCERT MUSIC BY FILM COMPOSERS program. This is our first since 2006. On the show today you will be hearing classical works by such composers as Andrew Pearce, Christopher Gordon, Lee Hodridge, Robert Folk, Elliot Goldenthal, Jerry Goldsmith, James Seymour Brett and more.
30 Sep 2018 | International Podcast Day Film Music Roundtable Discussion | 02:07:24
Welcome one and all to this very special International Podcast Day broadcast here on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. I’m Erik Woods the host and producer of CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO and today’s program is a film music roundtable discussion. On September 22nd, Jason Drury the host of THE ARCHIVE on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO paid us a visit all the way from Ramsgate in the UK. He spent a week here in the Kitchener Waterloo area, visited the sites and traveled to Toronto for a day to check out the CN Tower and a Toronto Blue Jays games. Before Jason's visit, Robert Daniels of VISIONS IN SOUND and myself thought that with Jason here in town we should do a roundtable film music discussion. Just basically chat about film music and see if anything good comes out of it. We also invited composer David Coscina to participate. On Sunday, September 23rd, at 8 pm Robert, David, Jason and I crammed ourselves in one of the production studios at CKWR in Waterloo. We sat there and chatted for 2 hours and discussed a wide variety of topics from technology in film music, to the lack of women writing music for film to candid film composer interviews and everything in between. Before we jump into the show I just want to introduce the panel to you. Jason Drury is the host of THE ARCHIVE on CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO. He is also the producer of the fabulous epic three-part radio documentary on the life and music of James Horner. Also in the booth is David Coscina. On his Soundcloud page, he called his himself an anachronistic composer who believes strongly in the foundations of music laid out by Mahler, Stravinsky, Ravel, Debussy, Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams among countless others. David and I have been fortunate enough to work together on a few projects and since 2013 he’s giving CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO a unique musical voice by composing the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO FANFARE AND THEME that you hear off the topic of every program. Manning the board is Robert Daniels. Robert has been hosting and producing his very own soundtrack radio program called VISIONS IN SOUND, which is quickly closing in on the 1000 episode milestone. The show can be heard on CKWR 98.5FM in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. The show airs live every Saturday morning from 12-2am (Eastern Time), Friday 9-11pm (Pacific Time) and you can listen to the program online at visionsinsound.ca Thank you very much for taking the time to join us on this very special day for podcasters. Let us know what you thought about the show. And if you have a suggestion for a future program then please email Erik Woods or make a suggestion via Twitter or Facebook.
