01 Jun 202150 Shades of Keto - Replayed00:42:31

If you’ve taken time to research keto and that left you absolutely confused, you’re not alone. See, ketogenic diets began back in the 1920’s as a treatment for epilepsy...but these days, they’re being used in full force as a diet for weight loss, and also for the health benefits that come with a ketogenic diet beyond weight loss, like lower blood sugars and extra energy throughout the day.

On today’s episode, I’m talking all about the different forms of a ketogenic diet. While it’s true keto began as a very high fat, very low carb plan meant to heal children, now there are different keto plans that work for different keto dieters. This makes sense since we’re all different people with different body chemistries.

Lazy Keto

  • Many who follow lazy keto can see amazing results
  • Lazy keto is a good start for many coming from the standard American diet
  • Some may eventually stall on a lazy keto plan

The Standard Ketogenic Diet

  • This is a high fat, low carb and moderate protein plan
  • This follows ratios of macros similar to 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% carbs
  • Standard keto focuses more on quality of food over quantity

High Protein Ketogenic Diet

  • Some focus more on eating more protein, while moderating fat
  • Carbs should still remain low while following this plan
  • Many who follow a high protein keto diet still have to count calories
  • Some people who follow this method eventually stall or never make it into ketosis

Cyclical Keto Diet

  • These dieters focus on eating standard keto at least 5-6 days each week
  • Cyclical keto dieters add carb ups to their routine to help refill glycogen stores
  • This is said to help athletes with better performance

Targeted Keto Diet

  • This is a hybrid of a standard keto diet and a cyclical keto diet
  • This version is also meant for athletes
  • These ketoers add high glycemic carbs right before their workouts

  • The scale is a liar
  • Even when you add intermittent fasting to your plan, some people really do need to follow a keto plan to get the results they want

02 Mar 2021Keto Isn’t Always the Answer - Replayed00:57:35

  • Even though most keto experts will tout the benefits of keto and they’ll teach you how to start your keto diet tomorrow, they won’t tell you when keto might not be the right plan for you.
  • Even though keto might not be right for you now, there are steps you can take to make keto right for you.
  • We’re not Jillian Michaels - she says keto isn’t right for anyone
  • Still, keto isn’t automatically a magical plan for everyone
  • Don’t expect massive weight loss just because you’re cutting back on carbs
  • If your body isn’t processing fat well, you need to work with your body to improve this in order to help make keto right for you.
  • Sticking with processed carbs long term also isn’t the answer.
  • While you may need to reduce carbs drastically to see results, not all ketoers need to stay under 20 grams of carbs for life

Listener Question: What is your take on companies that offer keto snacks and treats such as NÜSH, Quest, Smartćake, Smart Sweets, etc?

30 Jun 2020How Diet Perfectionism is Keeping You Stuck00:22:59

Are you following the perfect keto diet and still not getting results?

Being absolutely perfect on your plan could be what’s keeping you stuck!

I’m all jazzed up and talking about the challenge because this week’s podcast episode comes to you directly from the challenge. We’ve had quite a few challengers talk about striving for perfection with their keto plan, and I will tell you the same thing I’ve told them over and over - that desire for perfection is keeping you stuck in a yo-yoing weight pattern, even if you’re following keto.

When I mention diet perfectionism - I’m talking about that all or nothing mindset - like you have to get your keto diet perfect every single day, otherwise you failed … and once you mess up, why even bother?

21 Jul 2020How Counting Calories on Keto Can Hurt Progress: Part 100:34:08

The calorie theory on obesity follows the energy balance equation of Calories In - Calories Out = Body Fat Gained or Lost

This equation is the gold standard when it comes to weight loss plans. Most diet plans on the market, whether you follow Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, SlimFast or another popular mainstream plan, depend on the theory if we cut calories very low, no matter what the macronutrient profile of the foods we eat, weight loss will be achieved.

And for most of these plans, this works!

But only for a short time. Most people who follow these mainstream plans begin with a gung ho attitude and see the scale fall for the first few weeks, or sometimes even months.

In this Part 1 of 2 episode we talk about:

  • Why is under-eating long term a bad idea?
  • A lot of people still count calories while following keto. Is this a good idea?
  • Some call counting macros just another way to count calories. Is macro counting just a new way to control calories? Or what’s the difference?
  • Keep in mind - your macro range is just a range
  • Why do so many keto experts still tell women to under-eat on keto?

04 May 2021Different Kinds of Fats and Which are Best to Consume - Replayed00:45:43

With so many keto success stories out there, there’s a whole lotta people who are lowering their carbs and ramping up their fat in hopes of a keto success story of their very own. While many of these hopeful ketoers mean well, if they’re ramping up the wrong types of fat, they could be doing more harm than good for their best keto results.

Since there’s still so much misinformation given about healthy fats in the mainstream, in this episode of Chat the Fat, we’re going to clear up some of the confusion that comes along with which types of fat to consume.

We have a guide which will help you determine which foods contain which fats. You can find that at chatthefat.com/episode13

  • To start this episode, we provide official definitions of each type of fat found in the foods you eat and provide examples of each type of fat:
  • Monounsaturated
  • Polyunsaturated
  • Saturated
  • Trans fats

  • Since most mainstream articles tell you to steer clear of saturated fats, we spend time clearing up some saturated fat myths and explain how saturated fats got a bad wrap in the first place.
  • We further clarify why saturated fat is not the enemy.
  • We talk more about polyunsaturated fats and the reasons why they may not be as heart healthy as many of the mainstream outlets suggest.
  • We talk about the best oils to cook with, and which oils to avoid when cooking.
  • We talk more about the differences between MUFAs and PUFAs
  • We also let you know how to figure out which fats are ideal for you to eat.

Listener Question: How do you get your spouse on board with your new keto lifestyle? Cooking for my family would be so much easier if he would eat keto as well, so do you have any suggestions on getting your spouse to eat keto?

I’m solo today to tell you all about my intermittent fasting story - both the things I did right, and where I made mistakes along the way.

There are a ton of people trying out intermittent fasting these days because it’s such an easy plan to get great results. I personally used an intermittent fasting strategy, in combination with the other strategies we talk about on this podcast, to lose more than 100 pounds, improve diabetic blood sugar levels and to help drastically improve a slew of other health problems.

However, many who jump into a fasting plan don’t see the results they want because many of them are following all of the mainstream fasting advice out there that’s just plain wrong.

While adding intermittent fasting to your routine can lead to big results, if you’re making mistakes that seem insignificant, your results can come to a screeching halt! Listen to my fasting story today to learn how I found major success by adding a simple fasting routine to my routine so you can get big results from incorporating fasting to your low-carb, high-fat plan.

Tips and strategies talked about in today’s episode:

  • Intermittent fasting isn’t always about eating less food
  • I had to eat more food and exercise less to find permanent weight loss success
  • Start with an easy IF plan of 12 hours and add on as you’re ready
  • I talk about how I added onto my plan overtime to help form an intermittent fasting lifestyle

16 Jun 2021Interview with Suzanne from Keto Decoded - Replayed00:41:30

Suzanne Johnson is a 48 years old mother of 4. She started Keto in June 2018 and since then, she’s down 65 pounds...in less than a year!

Suzanne was a yo-yo dieter since she was a teenager. She’s tried everything from taking laxatives in college, dexatrim, weight watchers, low fat, low calorie, and even liquid diets. Like a lot of yo-yo dieters, if you can name a trendy diet, she’s tried it.

Suzanne had her gallbladder removed a few years ago, but still decided to move forward on a high fat keto plan. She found my Coach Me Course & My Big Fat Life Transformation book, which also led her to TC Hale, where she took the digestion course and enrolled in the Keto Decoded Membership. These courses helped her learn how to test for chemistry imbalances she needed to improve to balance her body. She also began digestive supplements to make the weight loss process easier by improving her digestive symptoms.

During this episode of Chat the Fat, we discuss Suzanne’s journey from yo-yo dieter to how she ended her struggle for good with a real food keto diet.

04 Aug 2020Interview with Keto Success Story: Donna - Part 100:31:16

Are you ready to learn the secrets Keto Decoded member Donna used to lose 2 full pants sizes in only 3 weeks? Stay tuned to this episode of Chat the Fat because we’re breaking down all of the big victories Donna has had since learning how to keto the right way for her big results.

Donna is a 48 year old nurse who resides in South Carolina with her husband and two girls. She began following keto on her own in January of 2019. While she did have some initial success, it was slow going and she continued to struggle with common digestive issues.

After struggling to lose her first 20 pounds, Donna decided keto was just like all of the other diets she’s tried in the past that wouldn’t work for her. She eventually regained everything she lost. Still, she decided she didn’t want to give up on her health, so Donna continued to research all of her health diagnoses, which included pre-diabetes, hyperthyroidism, fatty liver, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure and irritable bowel syndrome.

In her research, she came across TC’s book Kick Your Fat in the Nuts and finally found many of the answers she’d been searching for. Even though she works in the medical industry, she finally realized the doctors were only masking her symptoms, so she began following the protocols in the book to learn how to quit covering up the symptoms with medications, and get to the root of what caused her health symptoms. And she's had pretty amazing success.

In episode 68 we talk about:

  • Donna’s 30 year struggle with weight loss and all of the approaches she tried along the way
  • Digestive struggles Donna had that made keto difficult, including constipation and an anabolic imbalance
  • Why Donna previously struggled with keto and what made her new approach different
  • How her family and doctors she worked with didn’t necessarily approve of her lifestyle until they saw her big results
  • Donna’s biggest keto game changer to date that finally made the weight seem like it was just falling off
  • How eating more food helped Donna get better results

15 Sep 2020Overcoming Cravings - Part 300:28:54

Many find success on keto since once they get rid of the processed carbs they previously lived on and replace those processed foods with real food options that keep them satiated longer, so the constant hunger felt by many dieters and cravings simply vanish.

And while that’s a great happily ever after story, there are still many hopeful ketoers that go into keto hoping their cravings will vanish so they can get the same big results they keep hearing about, but a week or two into following keto, cravings take over and they find themselves head first in a greasy bag filled with burgers and an extra large fry.

Today in Part 3 we’re going to explore why some people’s cravings vanish after a few days into the plan, while others struggle with keto since the bag of stale chips hidden in the back of your pantry keeps calling your name.

In this episode:

  • Does food addiction play a part in the foods people crave?
  • Why does keto work so well to get rid of some people’s cravings?
  • Are there digestive reasons some people crave one type of food over another? IE, why I always want something salty and crunchy vs. someone else craving something sweet and chewy?
  • Some people say after a while of following keto, they actually start to crave healthier foods like broccoli. Why is this?
  • How can improving digestion help improve cravings?
  • Is a keto plan like carb cycling more helpful or hurtful when it comes to cravings on keto?

23 Mar 2021Keto Flu - Replayed01:04:56

Many mainstream experts urge you to steer clear of a ketogenic diet because they warn of the nausea, headache, dizziness and flat out misery that many people experience while following a keto diet. What these mainstream experts fail to mention is many of these symptoms are only temporary for most ketoers who experience them...and if you approach keto the right way, you may not even experience these symptoms at all!

These symptoms come along with what many refer to as the Keto Flu. They can typically occur within the first few weeks of the diet as your body switches over from burning it’s primary source of fuel of glucose to its new primary source of fuel of fat. As your body is making the switch, it can freak out since you’re losing electrolytes in mass and your body may think fuel is scarce when it’s no longer receiving the carbs it’s become accustomed to running on.

In today’s Chat the Fat we’re talking about the dreaded keto flu, along with the steps you can take to lessen keto flu or even avoid it all together!

  • We talked about what the keto flu means and some of the symptoms associated with it
  • We also reviewed what causes the symptoms referred to as keto flu
  • We shared some of the initial steps you can take to get past the keto flu stage
  • And then we reviewed 5 easy steps you can take to lessen or avoid keto flu completely

28 Jul 2020How Counting Calories on Keto Can Hurt Progress: Part 200:29:24

In this Part 2 of 2 episode we talk about:

  • What about exercising more to hit that calories in vs. calories out equation. How could this hurt progress?
  • Others also say intermittent fasting also works because it’s yet another way to control calories. Is this true?
  • Dr. Fung’s observations on counting calories
  • A lot of people drink “zero” calorie diet products like diet pop or stock up on “keto friendly” processed foods that have been sweetened with low calorie sweeteners to replace sugar that has calories to keep calories low - why is this a bad idea?

23 Jun 20205 Ways to Get More Fat into Your Diet00:27:32

Are you eating enough fat to lose weight?

Keto is a high fat diet, so if you’re not eating enough fat, you could stall your results! And that’s what we’re going to chat about on today’s Chat the Fat.

I listen to a lot of health podcasts, and still hear over and over, if you have fat to burn on your thighs, you don’t want to add extra fat to your diet. And while this may be true for some, I also think it’s so confusing for a lot of people who start keto - which they learn is a high fat diet … and then they’re immediately told to lower their fat.

Many follow this logic where they’re told that they can just lower carbs to below 20 and then poof! they’re in ketosis because they heard someone say they can just burn the fat on their thighs.

Some people’s bodies work that way - and perhaps that’s why this message keeps going around. Not everyone’s body works that way - so today we’ll chat about the reasons you want to get more fat into your keto diet and how to do it.

Today we talk about 5 ways to get more fat into your keto diet:

#1 - coconut oil

#2 - butter

#3 - heavy cream

#4 - fattier cuts of meat

#5 - avocado oil and olive oil

07 Jul 20205 Ways to Love Your Keto Lifestyle00:32:59

Do you still view keto as just another diet you’re trying for quick results?

If you want to keep the results you’re working so hard to get on keto, it’s a must that some form of keto becomes your lifestyle. Today we’ll chat about 5 changes you can make to turn keto into a lifestyle you love instead of just another quick fix plan that won't lead to lasting results.

Hopefully you’ve been listening long enough to understand that keto isn’t just another flash in the pan diet you can follow for a few weeks, or even a few months, to get quick results and then poof! You go back to the life you knew before keto and you somehow magically keep all of the weight you lost off. After decades of yo-yo diet misery and broken promises by the multi-billion dollar diet industry, we all know by now that it’s just not true, right?

I wanted to chat about this topic today because I’m not sure we all do know this. It’s a topic I preach about often because it’s a trap I personally fell into for decades. It’s that dieter’s mindset we talked about last week. If you want to have any success at all with any diet you try, it’s so important to ditch that dieter’s mindset for good!

5 ways to love your keto lifestyle:

#1 - Make sure you’re digesting fat and protein well

#2 - Learn how to cook keto friendly meals with quality ingredients

#3 - Work an intermittent fasting routine into your keto lifestyle

#4 - Moderate your exercise routine if it’s currently too strenuous

#5 - Practice gratitude and self love
