09 May 2022Emotions Why they matter and when they dont00:24:21
In this episode, we explore how emotions work. We examine how they are created and why they matter so much. We also discuss when emotions don’t matter and when we should ignore them.

HOW THEY WORK

Lisa Feldman Barrett ‘How Emotions are Made’

Our brains make predictions

We experience affect
Valence & Arousal

Interroception: What we feel inside
Sensory Input: What we sense outside
Concepts: What this is like

Our brain regulates our body budget
Use concept to decide on emotion

WHY THEY MATTER

Release of chemicals and hormones inside of us
Allocate resources to balance body budget
Influence us in terms of what we can do

Source of information and even wisdom in terms of ‘gut feelings’

Guide us in terms of what we like and what we don’t

When we are taken advantage of we can get angry
When our status is in danger, we can get scared
When

They make us human.

Love. Compassion. Ecstasy.

Birth of a Baby. Laughing with a friend.

WHEN THEY DON’T MATTER

Our brains aren’t optimized for happiness

They are optimized for survival in the jungle.

Nowadays, huge adrenaline surge isn’t as useful as it was.

As such, they focus on danger, drama and desire.

We become addicted to extreme emotions

Our feelings often mask the truth. Feelings vs Facts.

Drug Addiction, Anger, Falling in Love - Craziness

25 Sep 2023Interview with Frank Kitchen CSP on Culture and Mindset00:37:28

In this episode of The Changing Minds, I have the privilege of chatting with my friend Frank Kitchen. He is "The Mindset Master Chef. He works with Organizations that want their people to break through mental barriers to cook up the professional dreams they hunger for.

On June 18, 2015, Frank was fired by his employer. His son was 2 years old, and his wife was 6 1/2 months pregnant with their second child. It was Father's Day weekend! That weekend, Frank got hungry and committed to living the Professional Speaking Dream he had been "talking" about for years.

With the support of his family and friends, he used the skills he earned as a student leader, award-winning toy store manager, salesperson, educator, event planner, and entertainer to transform the ultimate "burnt meal" into a tasty 5-star Masterpiece!

Frank now teaches his proven recipe for transforming your professional aspirations into reality with professional associations, corporations, schools, colleges, universities, nonprofits, and civic groups around the world. The same recipe he used to go from unemployed to earning the Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) Designation from the National Speakers Association, recognizing him as one of the top Professional Speakers on the planet.

When he isn't speaking, Frank practices what he teaches. He currently serves as a volunteer and Board Chair for the Non-Profit organization Hustle PHX. Their team of staff and volunteers provide aspiring entrepreneurs in underserved urban communities with the resources needed to start and operate thriving businesses.

15 May 2023Brain Prompting: The science of instructing your brain00:27:33

In this episode, Owen explores what he calls ‘brain prompting’ which is about communicating with your brain like you do with Chat GPT or AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly growing field with many practical applications.

One popular use of AI is chatbots, such as GPT and Chat GPT, which can hold conversations and answer questions. Chat GPT has access to a massive database of information from the internet and can create content, improve existing content, and adjust its style or tone.

Brain prompting is a strategy for prompting your brain to work more effectively, similar to how we prompt AI.

Brain prompting draws from various fields such as neuroscience, psychology, neuro-linguistic programming, and cognitive behavioral therapy to offer us a way to influence ourselves better. It involves asking questions, making requests, and specifying what you want from your brain.

Asking Questions:

There are six different functions of questioning ourselves:

  1. Hunt for answers and gather information.

  2. Create emotions and influence how we feel.

  3. Build Curiosity

  4. Challenge our beliefs and help us to choose more empowering beliefs.

  5. Clarify information.

  6. Dictate focus and help us to prioritize what is important.

Requests:

Skillfully framing requests can help you get better results from your brain.

There are two strategies to communicate with your brain effectively:

  1. "I want you to X"

  2.  "Act as if you were X."

When you give your brain clear and definite instructions of what you want to achieve, it can often help the brain to achieve it.

Specificity:

Specificity can be applied to brain prompting by being clear and granular about what you want the brain to do. When you communicate with others, consider:

The specific target audience

The specific information you have about them

The specific action you want them to do

The specific tone or style, or format you need to communicate with them in

11 Sep 2023Interview with Adam Boyd on Selling Through Asking00:23:17

In this episode of Changing Minds, I have the pleasure of interviewing my good friend, Adam Boyd. He has been training and consulting on sales with founders, owners, and individuals on sales and sales leadership since 2008. Several clients have had successful exits, though he’s not claiming a direct correlation. He’s had 2 stints as a middle market exec leading sales, one time with a lot of success and luck and another time with not very much of either.

Most of his work now is with professional service providers, such as attorneys, high-end consultants, and those in real estate, finance, benefits, or wealth management. He loves helping those in highly competitive markets win more of the right clients through training. His approach involves turning discovery calls into two-way conversations, and he emphasizes the importance of curiosity, listening, and understanding in creating a genuine connection with clients.

Adam survived the Acton School of Business and read a lot of books at Rhodes College. He lives in the greatest country in America, Texas, with his wife, 4 kids, and a new dog.

In this episode, we look at how you can be ready for the future by asking a number of key questions.

We grew up learning the infamous "when life gives you lemons" metaphor, which we use as a lesson to deal with when fate throws anything in our way. But that is not necessarily true because, most of the time, we're taken aback by how unpredictable the future is. Whether you’re currently weathering storms, just got fired from your dream job, or waiting for an acceptance call, here’s a simple guide to being ready for anything life throws your way, because living is a bit more tricky than lemons and oranges.

In today's episode, we'll be learning how to get prepared for the unknown. Here are some of the tips that you should follow in order to be prepared for the future:

1.Create a vision for the future that you want in sections.

2.Instead of preparing for the worst-case scenario, prepare for the most likely scenario.

3.What are the upcoming challenges that you foresee and potential challenges that might occur?

4.Weight the opportunities that are there for you?

5.Identify all of the different skills, mindsets, and behaviors you need in order for you to be ready for the future.

6.What do you need to do in order to make that vision a reality?

7.What are you going to do to be able to change things if something unexpected happens?

13 Dec 2021How To Bet On Yourself00:19:14

Sometimes (or during times of uncertainty) we just need to give ourselves the benefit of the doubt and believe that we can overcome adversity and thrive.

However, our brains are prediction machines. Because of that, we tend to learn from error—from the gap between what we predicted and what actually happens. I’ve mentioned before but beliefs are ideas that have certainty attached to them.

If we bet on ourselves and succeed, that’s great, right? The problem is when we interpret negative experiences in a way that confirms the narratives we tell ourselves.

Well, I’ve got good news for you. We can actually choose to believe that we’re so much more capable than we think.

Here’s how you can direct your brain to gamble on you:

  • Look back on all of the things you’ve accomplished in the past
  • Those memories will give you the conviction that you can succeed
  • If you tried and didn’t succeed, redefine what that experience means
  • Imagine what you want to happen and then act as if it’s going to happen
  • Start by altering the way you carry yourself or the way you talk
  • Put your commitment where your mind is
  • Expect tough times to be difficult but bet that you can be tougher

With 2022 on the horizon, choose new habits, optimize your performance, and get the results that you wanted to achieve!

Life Lessons

  • Flirt with yourself

  • Do as many different things, in as many different places, with as many different people as you can

  • The past doesn't define a person

  • The best way to predict the future is to create it.

  • Changing the way you remember the past can lead to a better experience and lessen its negative impact.

  • Real problems require real solutions, while imaginary problems require imaginary solutions

  • Your state is so important

  • Trust your own opinions

  • Recognize the power of belief and love

02 May 2022How to make your messages memorable00:16:06

Last week we talked about getting people’s attention by using helpful hacks. To continue the motions, in this episode, we will be talking about how you can grab people’s attention from the gecko. To change minds, you have to be able to present your ideas powerfully, in a way that people can remember them. If you ever stumbled into psychology, you will know that different factors play a role in determining what people can remember. To clear things further, we will be presenting 10 ideas that could help people remember you easily.

  1. Context-figure specific examples whenever you are teaching a certain idea, try and use particular instances where you can tie and connect your ideas.
  2. Cues- a cue is something that immediately triggers a particular item
  3. Contrast- the importance of grabbing people’s attention by telling them what they’re not expecting
  4. Emotion- when you experience “state-dependent learning.”
  5. Quantity- getting a certain number
  6. Relevancy- find ways to connect to something that’s already important to your audience
  7. Repetition- repeating the same ideas over and over
  8. Self-creative- get people to apply your theories, ideas, or techniques in their way
  9. Senses- get them to see, feel and experience something
  10. Social- make it something that people want to share with others

23 May 2022How Inner Propaganda Works00:21:25

In this episode, we explore the phenomena I first mentioned in my TEDx talk… Inner Propaganda… and explain how it works and how we influence ourselves internally.

Propaganda - Information of a misleading nature designed to influence people

Attention - we focus on whatever maintains the narrative

Confirmation Bias - we convince ourselves we are correct

Beliefs - Ideas with the feeling of certainty attached

Mindset - A collection of beliefs that we have about a specific topic

Emotions - Affect that we interpret in a particular way

Moods - Emotions that last more than a few minutes

Thoughts - Ideas we generate inside our mind consciously or unconsciously

Internal multilogue - the conversations that happen inside our head between different voices

Core Beliefs - what we believe no matter what we feel

Emotional Beliefs - what we believe when we feel a particular emotion

Our Inner narrative - the story we tell ourselves about a situation

An Emotion leads to emotional beliefs and an inner narrative that interprets the experience we are having.

From the internal multilogue, the negative voices gain power and use negative thoughts and emotional beliefs and an inner narrative. try and convince us of a negative reality.

This reality can keep the emotion alive and lead to a mood and even a mood disorder.

To overcome the challenge posed by inner propaganda, we need to take back power in our own minds.

This means understanding the difference between core beliefs and emotional beliefs.

It means changing our inner narratives and choosing where we put our attention.

17 Jul 2023Jess Pettitt on DEI, Cancel Culture and Being Good Enough00:41:11

Jess Pettitt, M.Ed., CSP, has always had a foot in two different approaches to her life. Perhaps it is her Texas roots, but she believes to thrive in this world you have to ride two horses at once – one of humility and one of ego. This is why while hosting and performing stand-up in NYC she also worked as a diversity and inclusion specialist as a day job. She quit her day job after a decade and almost 20 years later still uses humor to deliver actionable content related to everything you ever wanted to know about where leadership and diversity collide but are afraid to ask. Though often referred to as a thought leader, Jess responds that she just makes leaders think. For Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work to stick, the first step is a conversation that matters about what you don’t know you don’t know then you can do the best you can with what you have some of the time without getting sued, losing talent, or failing customers.
