15 Mar 2023Episode 410: Chad Fischer - Musician, Composer, Frontman of Lazlo Bane01:10:58

Chad Fischer's early work was being a drummer for the band School of Fish ("Three Strange Days"), founded by his college friend Josh Clayton-Felt.

Fischer replaced the original their original drummer in 1991; however, he did not play on the band's second album due to a fallout with a producer and was replaced by Josh Freese. Mr. Freese pops up repeatedly in this episode.

Nevertheless, Fischer still stayed with the band to perform live. The only official commercial School of Fish release that included his drumming was the single "Take Me Anywhere," which you can hear in this episode.

After School of Fish disbanded in 1994, Chad Fischer built his own recording studio and started writing new material. He signed to Almo Sounds label and formed the band Lazlo Bane, whose debut album, 11 Transistor, was released in January 1997.

During the early years, Chad Fischer met Colin Hay, with whom he became a close friend. Fisher played drums on Hay's 1994 album Topanga, while Hay contributed guitar and vocals to Lazlo Bane's cover of "Overkill" from their debut album.

Since then, Chad Fischer took part in the recording of Hay's subsequent studio albums up to Next Year People in 2015. Chad wore many hats, from session musician and songwriter to mixing engineer and co-producer.

Chad Fischer's early work on TV scores includes shows My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star and The Class.

In 2007 Chad Fischer and Lazlo Bane guitarist Tim Bright started scoring the American medical drama series Private Practice. During its run Fischer and Bright won BMI TV Music Award four times: in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. The show concluded after six seasons in 2013.

After Private Practice, Chad Fischer started providing music for another ABC show, Scandal. For his work, he won the BMI TV Music Award six times from 2013 to 2018.

Oh, yea, and Chad wrote "I'm No Superman" - the theme song to the show Scrubs.

The highly acclaimed Garden State soundtrack, released in 2004, subsequently winning a Grammy Award in 2005 and receiving platinum certification, featured two songs produced by Chad Fischer: "Blue Eyes" performed by Cary Brothers and "Winding Road" performed by actress Bonnie Somerville.

Other musicians and bands Fischer produced include Everlast, Lisa Loeb, Colin Hay, and The Good Luck Joes.

Are you still reading this?  You should really be listening.

01 Dec 2022Episode 311 - Steve Issacs of Skycycle & The Panic Channel00:46:37

On this episode of Abandoned Albums, Steve Isaacs stopped by Thunderlove Studios to chat about his career. Now Steve is one of those guys who generate positivity.

After paying dues on the coffee house circuit in Los Angeles in the early 90s (that he helped create), he packed up and moved east to become a VJ at MTV right when grunge broke.

From there, he auditioned - and got the gig - for a tour of a broadway play (no spoilers, you gotta listen).

And then, he fronted his band, Skycycle. A band named after the rocket that Evel Knievel (Wile E. Coyote personified ) tried to jump over the Snake River. Skycyle released one EP - Breathing Water - and one LP - Ones and Zeros.

And then fronting another band with ¾ of Jane’s Addiction… while keeping a day job!

Steve Isaacs has one helluva work ethic and a whole lot of creativity.

And he’s a super nice guy!

Listen for yourself!

06 Jul 2022Episode 211 - The Ballad of Ian and Oona00:31:03

Communication breakdown at HQ as Keith and Rob are sans guest this week.

For reasons that remain murky, at best, Keith and Rob had to pull a rabbit out of their proverbial hat this week as the guest they had booked vanished. Authorities have been notified.

Thinking on his feet EP Rufus Thunderlove proved his worth by deciding to pull in the Words and Music series from Amazon amp. The series where they read 100 word stories and pair it with a song - like wine and cheese.

So, in lieu of a guest this week, you will get 6x100 word stories written and read by Keith and six fine songs (luckily not written or sung by Keith). It's called The Ballad of Ian and Oona.

Think of this episode of Abandoned Albums as the equivalent of a fine Champagne and Brie pairing.

We're back next week with a shiny new (and normal) episode.

04 May 2022Episode of 203 - Matthew Stull of The Bobs00:39:43

The Bob's co-founder Matthew Stull pays Thunderlove Studio a visit and talks with Rob and Keith about the early days of The Bobs all the way to the end.

26 Jan 2023Episode 403 - Ryan Humbert of The Shootouts01:08:53

The Shootouts create “country music for people who don’t like country.”

Keith, Geoff, and Rufus can confirm.

They got a chance to chat about The Shootouts when lead singer, guitarist, and chief shooter Ryan Humbert stopped by Thunderlove Studio.

The band didn’t expect to be back in the studio so soon after the release of their Top 10 Americana album Bullseye. But when one of country music’s most legendary artists agrees to produce your next record, you don’t say no.

That’s what happened when a mutual friend introduced the band to Ray Benson –  longtime frontman and 10-time Grammy-winning founder of Asleep at the Wheel. Just months after the April 2021 release of Bullseye, the Shootouts found themselves hard at work with Benson and co-producer Sam Seifert on the album that would become Stampede.

While it may have come together quickly, the sessions resulted in the group’s strongest album yet.

Again, Keith, Geoff, and Rufus can confirm.

Stampede is steeped in all things country music – an energetic fusion of Americana, honky tonk and Western swing that will leave you craving more. Not only are the The Shootouts four members front and center, but the list of artists who stopped by to contribute is like an Americana fans wet dream:

  • Asleep at the Wheel (in addition to Ray Benson producing)
  • Buddy Miller
  • Jim Lauderdale
  • Raul Malo (of The Mavericks)
  • And the legendary Marty Stuart

This is a great conversation with a great guy about a great band that has a great album queued up and ready to drop on February 24.

Listen as Keith, Geoff, and Ryan talk about all, and we mean ALL, kinds of things.

This is a gud’un folks!

Put on your helmet and strap yourselves in!

22 May 2024Episode 808 - Do not go gentle into that good night - the story of X-RAIDED.01:02:35

There are prisoners and then there are people who find themselves in prison.

X-Raided is an artist who falls into the latter category.

X-Raided was released after serving 26 years. And in the ultimate irony, he completed his sentence months before the world went into its own kind of prison - the COVID lockdown. Undeterred, he remained laser-focused on his career as an artist, using his platform to advocate for criminal justice reform, and his continued evolution as a man, mentoring younger people. His resilience and continued relevance in the rap industry make X-Raided an intriguing and influential figure in hip-hop history.

To listen to his catalog is to bear witness to growth. The line from a song like “Who’s the Ho” to “The Sunken Place,” much like life itself - in the joint or not - is not a straight one.

X-Raided’s artistic catalog is a document to the growth of the man and the artist.

25 May 2023Episode 505 - Mo Troper on Power Pop, His Career, and the lasting power of ”I Am the Cosmos.”01:07:03

Mo Troper is genuinely one of a kind, and that’s who joins Keith & Geoff this week.

You should know Mo - Mo is a Portland, OR-based power pop extraordinaire who creates songs with hilarity and hooks that all go hand-in-hand.

But that's not all he is and that's not all the lads chatted about.

Not to tell secrets outside of school, but Mo perhaps gives the most succinct definition of Power-Pop we've ever heard. And that fits nicely into the discussion on the lasting power of Chris Bell's masterpiece "I Am The Cosmos."

For those wondering who Chris Bell is, he was a member of Big Star - considered by many to be one of the better Power-Pop bands.

Did we forget to mention that Mo is also a scribe? He penned an article for Remember The Lightning - A Guitar Pop Journal: Vol 1 (link below) on "I Am The Cosmos".

And listening to Mo talk about his incredible body of work and his own artist journey is really a treat.

The guys cover a fair amount of ground about a fair amount of subjects, so you'll want to check this one out!

24 Mar 2024Episode 706 - Betty Blowtorch01:09:04

Betty Blowtorch is a rock band formed in Hollywood, California, in 1998; the band is known for its energetic and rebellious sound, often blending punk, rock, and metal elements. Fronted by the charismatic and fiery lead vocalist and guitarist, the late Bianca Butthole (real name Bianca Halstead), Betty Blowtorch quickly gained a reputation for their electrifying live performances and unapologetic attitude.

Betty Blowtorch's rise to fame was cut short tragically in 2001 when Bianca Butthole died in a car accident. Her untimely death was a devastating blow to the rock community and left a void that could never be filled.

The band's lineup also includes bassist Blare N. Bitch, drummer Judy Molish, and guitarist Sharon Needles, each contributing to the band's distinctive sound. Their lyrics often tackled provocative and feminist themes, addressing issues like female empowerment and challenging societal norms.

Rising from the ashes with Mia X. RocknRolla now fronting the band, Betty Blowtorch's rebellious spirit and fearless approach to music continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans.

All four members joined Keith & Geoff in Thunderlove Studio for a conversation about the past, the present, and the future. 🙂

Look for new music from the band in the upcoming weeks.

15 Feb 2023Episode 406 - Blake Smith & Mike Willison of Fig Dish01:10:06

Fig Dish IS a 1990s rock band based in Chicago. The band signed to PolyGram Records in 1995 and released two full-length albums before becoming inactive in 1998.

Fig Dish's sound was influenced by 80s college rock and indie bands such as Dinosaur Jr. and The Replacements, and has drawn comparisons to Cheap Trick. They were part of a mid-90s Chicago rock scene that included The Smashing Pumpkins, Veruca Salt, and Local H. They were closely associated and often shared bills with those and other Chicago acts such as Triple Fast Action, Smoking Popes, and Hushdrops. The band's name was said to have been chosen for its resemblance, when pronounced, to the vulgar German phrase fick dich.

That's What Love Songs Often Do, Fig Dish's 1995 major label debut album, which had been out of print for years, was re-released in April 2013. Chicago Magazine wrote that the band was a "folkloric Chicago outfit," and quoted Blake Smith's summary of the band's career: "We were too busy being the underdog Midwestern raging partying guys, and it killed us.... We just weren’t very good at playing the game, and we drank a lot back in those days."

19 Oct 2022Episode 307 - Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible00:38:58

WARNING: This episode mentions alcohol abuse, depression, and self-harm.

This album is a long-time favorite around the offices. The Holy Bible (The Manic Street Preacher's third album, not necessarily the book) is caustic, relentless, and at times, verbally claustrophobic... and as it approaches 30 years of age, it's still one of music's most potent.

In the early nineties, rising above the noise of the scene from Manchester and the budding dominance of Brit-Pop, was no easy task. These four childhood friends from Wales found a way.

Ripping pages from The Clash, Guns-n-Roses, and even Public Enemy, the band blazed new territory with their unique sound and lyrics that sometimes begged you to have a dictionary handy - (this was pre-internet).

You either know the story of Manics rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards, or you don't.

On this episode, we tell the story of the band's seminal third album, The Holy Bible. Well, we don't; we let the band tell it in their own words.

13 Sep 2023Episode 602 - Daniel Chavis of The Veldt00:56:26

Thunderlove Studio is less a physical place and more a state of mind.

What a treat it was to welcome Daniel Chavis, lead singer of The Veldt, into Thunderlove Studio.

Anywho, you may or may not have heard of The Veldt. From where I sit, you should have. As Daniel and I chatted, there may have been several reasons they may not have achieved the type of widespread commercial success back in the early to mid-90s - the least of which is their sound.

The Veldt - the band name taken from a Ray Bradbury short story - is often categorized as a “shoegaze” band. Pitchfork included their 1994 classic Afrodisiac in their “Top 50 Shoegaze Albums of All Time” list.

Over the past month, The Veldt has released a couple of songs bourne from those initial Robin Guthrie sessions - “The Everlasting Gobstopper” and “Aurora Borealis” - on their Bandcamp page. Daniel told me that they’re hoping to drop the whole Guthrie-produced set at the end of September.

Discovering The Veldt has been a real treat and they’re exactly the kind of band that makes this Abandoned Albums journey so much fun. I got to talk with Daniel about the band’s origin, being a black rock band, the influence of Afrodisiac, and WTF “White Music For Black People” means.

Gummies were eaten. Stories were told. Bonds were made.

They're being released in the order in which they were conducted.

Irwin Chusid is to outsider music as Irving Azoff was to Atlantic Records. Here in Part Two, Irwin gives us the low-down on music rights. He goes into his involvement in a Lizzo song, a Lady Gaga song, and how that led to his involvement with Sun Ra.

You don't NEED to listen to Part One to follow along here, but it is strongly encouraged. It provides better context.

Once again, Irwin shares with us his tremendous knowledge and his unique storytelling skills.

01 Jun 2023Episode 506 - Del Barber on Almanac... and more!01:01:39

Three-time Juno Award nominee (the Canadian Grammy Awards) singer/songwriter Del Barber stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith & Geoff about his new album, Almanac, as well as... well, everything.

When Del began writing the 12 songs comprising his eighth album, he adhered more than ever to a prairie aesthetic. Don't worry, we explain that.

Almanac follows Barber’s acclaimed 2021 album Stray Dogs: Collected BSides Vol. 1, made during the height of pandemic restrictions. Stray Dogs, which brought Barber to the end of one season, Almanac doggedly led him into the next.

Keith & Geoff talk with Del about his entire body of work and his influences, and the maturation of his songwriting and performing.

24 Mar 2024Episode 712 - A Musical Journey with Johnny Manchild - Exploring Creativity, Mental Health and Indie Music01:11:08

Join us on an enlightening journey into the heart of indie music as Johnny Manchild, enigmatic frontman of Oklahoma-based band Johnny Manchild and the Poor Bastards. He shares his exploration of diverse musical genres, his creative process, and his struggle with mental health.

In this intimate episode, we delve into Manchild's infectious passion for punk, rock, power-pop, and garage rock. We take a close look at the making of his albums, particularly his new offering 'Rapture Waltz', tracing his evolution as an artist from his early 'Sgt. Pepper' moment with the album 'Insomnia' up to his contemporary work.

Our discussion navigates through the significant moments in Johnny's life, from his early influential experiences with music, pivoting around his mother and her partner, Phoebe, to the authenticity and originality of his own music that defies categorization. Johnny conceptualizes his ordeal with 'demoitis', the restrictive struggle of clinging onto a project's initial draft, and embraces the freedom in exploring spontaneous inspiration.

In a very open account, Johnny shares his ongoing battle with bipolar disorder and how this experience has been a cathartic channel for his music. He reflects on the implications of the disorder on his creativity and the fine line between mental health maintenance and artistic output.

Finally, we venture into the real-world stories behind his band’s live performances and music videos and his optimism for their new musical epoch. This episode serves as an eye-opener for those seeking an authentic dialogue about music, creativity, and mental health.

What can be said about Jimmy Ashhurst?

  • Rock–n-roll troubadour? CHECK
  • Bass player with creative wanderlustlust? CHECK
  • Rock Star? CHECK
  • Nice guy? CHECK
  • Great storyteller? CHECK
  • Musical Ambassador? CHECK
  • Geopolitical operative? HUH?

Jimmy returns to Abandoned Albums to chat up Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds. A record firmly embedded on Keith’s desert island list.

Jimmy’s also holds the distinction (such as it is) as appearing on another of the albums on Keith's list - Broken Homes debut album.

Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds is a great rock and roll record.

Had it been released in 1974 as opposed to 1992, there is NO doubt that band would be legendary. But alas, it twas not to be… the album still kicks a high degree of ass!!

08 Mar 2023Episode 409 - Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket01:13:58

Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986.

The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions."

The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours.

In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin.

Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021.

As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000.

In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records.

In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences.

A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad.

Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006.

In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.).

In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009.

Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008.

In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun."

On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021.

Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health.

24 Mar 2024Episode 703 - S.W. Lauden and Nadja Dee talk Fountains of Wayne & Welcome Interstate Managers as an enduring testament to the essence of everyday life.01:13:40

Fountains of Wayne's Welcome Interstate Managers stands as a seminal masterpiece in the rich tapestry of alternative rock and power pop. S.W. Lauden and Nadja Dee stopped by Thunderlove Studio to celebrate the album's 20-year anniversary and chat about the band's remarkable songwriting prowess and their gift for crafting irresistibly melodic tunes laced with poignant narratives.

At its core, Welcome Interstate Managers weaves a lyrical narrative that vividly portrays the landscape of suburban life, love, and the pangs of longing. The album's breakout single, "Stacy's Mom," swiftly became a timeless classic, featuring a narrative that seamlessly blends youthful infatuation with a dash of humor and emotional resonance—a signature characteristic of Fountains of Wayne's artistry.

Beneath the shadow of "Stacy's Mom," the album hides a treasure trove of tracks like "Bright Future in Sales," "Hackensack," and "Mexican Wine." Each song showcases the band's remarkable knack for keen observations and the craft of weaving relatable stories into their music. The melodies, as infectious as ever, and the harmonies, flawlessly layered, beckon listeners to immerse themselves in the sonic journey.

03 May 2023Episode 502 - Marvin Etzioni on Lone Justice, Marvin Country... and a lot more!01:32:07

On this episode, Keith & Geoff welcome Marvin Etzioni into Thunderlove Studio - he is also known as the Mandolin Man. Etzioni is best known as a founder and bassist for the band Lone Justice.

He is also a noted songwriter, composer, and record producer. He has released three solo albums in addition to performing with loads of artists.

In 1982, Etzioni met Ryan Hedgecock, who shared his love for country and roots music. Hedgecock was already performing with Maria McKee. Hedgecock and McKee asked Etzioni to back them on bass duties, along with drummer Don Heffington and the band Lone Justice was launched.

Etzioni was a member of Lone Justice from 1983 to 1986, during which he encouraged them to write original material, and contributed the songs "East of Eden," "Working Late," "You Are the Light," and "Soap, Soup and Salvation" (written with McKee).

Marvin has produced for numerous artists, including Peter Case, Counting Crows, and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Etzioni's compositions have been covered by Cheap Trick, Victoria Williams, Julie Miller and Judy Collins. Etzioni produced and wrote songs with the Williams Brothers (Andy Williams' nephews Andrew and David).

Together with David Williams, Etzioni co-wrote "Can't Cry Hard Enough" which became his most successful song.

In the 1990s, Etzioni recorded and released three albums: The Mandolin Man (1991), Bone (1992) and Weapons of the Spirit (1994).Etzioni employs the analog-vinyl-digital (AVD) technique, in which his master tapes are converted first to vinyl, and the vinyl is recorded to digital for the final product.

In 2012, Etzioni released the 2-disc album Marvin Country on Nine Mile Records. On the album, which had been in development since 1985, Etzioni played mandolin, mandocello, guitar, bass, piano, Mellotron, porchboard and keyboards. Included are duets with Lucinda Williams ("Lay It on the Table"),Steve Earle ("Ain't No Work in Mississippi"), Richard Thompson ("It Don't Cost Much"), Buddy Miller ("Living Like a Hobo"), John Doe ("The Grapes of Wrath"), Maria McKee ("You Possess Me"), and the Dixie Hummingbirds ("You Are the Light").

For most songs, the backing band was Heffington (drums), Steve Fishell (pedal steel), Gurf Morlix (bass), Tammy Rogers (fiddle), and Buddy Miller and Duane Jarvis (guitar).

15 May 2024Episode 807 - With his debut solo album, Rock & Roll Diary, BILLY ALEXANDER steps into the spotlight.01:06:02

As our favorite Rock and Roll Ambassador, bass player Jimmy Ashhurst, said in the very first episode, “How do you market classic rock when it’s not yet classic?”

Billy Alexander, the multi-talented guitarist and a cornerstone of the prog-rock outfit YYNOT, has done time as a sideman to John Waite and Anna Nalick, has produced, written, and recorded numerous artists, and with his nine-song debut solo album, Rock & Roll Diary, steps into the spotlight.

In essence, Billy Alexander's work is a masterclass in balancing complexity with accessibility. While we may not have answered the question of how to market classic rock that is not yet classic, it’s nice to know there are still acolytes out there writing the tunes and stomping the stages.

BONUS EPISODE

Geoff & Keith dig deep to tackle the mystery around Jake Thomspon and The Slim Whitcomb Band.

This is almost an Unsolved Mystery Abandoned Albums episode because they try to find out WTF happened to Jake Thompson.

The Slim Whitcomb Band was well on its way to success when Jake disappeared in August 1997.

Their debut album, Trailer Park Trash, has a near-legendary reputation among many music fans.

The guys welcome SWB guitar player Drew Fischer and bass player Emma Dalton into Thunderlove Studio to chat about the band. They also got to speak to Trailer Park Trash producer Lyle "Skunk" Gallagher.

This is the story of The Slim Whitcomb Band.

18 Jan 2023Episode 402 - Tierney Tough of The Pauses00:50:52

The Pauses released their first album, A Cautionary Tale, in 2011 through New Granada Records.

The band recorded the album with producer J. Robbins of Jawbox fame in Baltimore, MD, at The Magpie Cage.

Lead singer Tierney Tough stopped by Thunderlove Studios to chat with Geoff and Keith about The Pauses and take a deep dive into their second album - Unbuilding - from 2018.

Like its predecessor, it was produced by J. Robbins of Jawbox.

Said BrooklynVegan of the release: “…it’s got a little of the off-kilter mathy guitars of the DC/Dischord scene that birthed J Robbins, plus bouncy Mates of States-y synths, and singer Tierney Tough has a delightfully dry delivery that brings to mind Speedy Ortiz or Liz Phair.” - can confirm.

07 Dec 2022Episode 312 - Jordon Zadorozny of Blinker the Star00:59:59

Blinker the Star is Jordon Zadorozny, and Jordon Zadorozny is Blinker the Star.

The Canadian solo artist has created eleven albums (both major label and indie) and worked with musicians as varied as Leland Sklar (bass player with the big bushy grey beard... you know him), Ken Andrews, and one of his childhood heroes, Lindsey Buckingham (a couple of great stories in the podcast... no spoilers).

Jordon spent some time in Los Angeles in the 90s, recording the Dreamworks album August Everywhere. While in LA he even lent a helping hand to Courtney Love with  Hole's album Celebrity Skin.

It's a testament to his strength that he survived both.

Jordon remains artistically active, having just released Love Oblast, and is a producer working from his studio Skylark Studio in Pembroke, Ontario.

11 Oct 2023Episode 606 - Karina Denike01:04:00

You can't pigeonhole or stereotype Karina Denike. Don't even try.

Perhaps best known as the dynamic and talented vocalist of the renowned ska-punk band, Dance Hall Crashers, she's had a career that has seen her genre hop like Dr. Who time travels.

The Dance Hall Crashers quickly gained recognition in the ska and punk scenes with their infectious melodies and powerful live performances. Karina's captivating vocals and charismatic stage presence played a crucial role in defining the band's sound.

Over the years, Dance Hall Crashers released a string of successful albums, including Lockjaw and Honey, I'm Homely! Their music, a fusion of punk, ska, and pop, resonated with audiences and left an indelible mark on the California ska-punk scene.

Karina's contribution to the band extended beyond her vocal prowess. She was a driving force in crafting the band's lyrics, often delving into themes of love, empowerment, and self-discovery.

Her solo career is full of original tunes that are a haunting combo of 30's seaside shanties, 60's girl group harmony, and noir soundtracks. Karina also lends sher skills to bands like The Cottontails, Mr. Lonesome & The Bluebelles, Ralph Carney's serious jass Project, and is currently on tour with NOFX.

Karina stopped by to talk with Geoff and Keith about those days as a Dance Hall Crasher and everything she's done since.

Leonard and Bar None Records dusted off the recordings and have released one fine dirty rock album, Riches to Rags (which kinda describes Bob Stinson's career arc). Mike sheds some insight about living and working with one of the most iconic/tragic (take your pick) figures from the era.

Riches to Rags is just in time for Record Store Day! Check it out!

20 Jul 2022Episode 213 - Gary Myrick of Havana 3 am00:43:32

Singer/Songwriter, Troubadour, and Texas Guitar Slinger Gary Myrick drops by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith and Rob about the self-titled debut album by Havana 3am from 1991.

Havana 3am took shape when singer Nigel Dixon (of rockabilly band Whirlwind), guitarist Gary Myrick and bassist Paul Simonon (of The Clash) went out riding their motorcycles.

This self-produced album is wickedly sharp and melds surf, punk, rockabilly, traditional rock and adds a healthy Latin influence. For 1990, it was probably a little ahead of its time.

Gary talks to the guys about his entire career, which includes meeting Jimi Hendrix, getting shot at while performing in Texas, and replacing Stevie Ray Vaughn. Myrick even plays a little sample of what he is currently working on… and it’s amazing, naturally.

24 Mar 2024Episode 610 - Donny Dykowsky01:09:04

In the saga of life, Donny Dykowsky has emerged as a seasoned combatant.

A champion, if you will.

The early two-thousands bore witness to Donny's heroic struggle for existence. It was a life-and-death duel, and during the arduous period of convalescence, ensconced in isolation, he embarked on the audacious endeavor of assembling a musical ensemble that would later be christened as Chesterwhite. Their debut drew comparisons to luminaries like David Bowie and T-Rex, infused with a dystopian tincture. The album wove a tapestry of a science-fiction odyssey, inspired by Donny's own life as a cancer survivor grappling with the tempestuous throes of a toxic relationship.

Simultaneously, Donny was cultivating a sterling reputation behind the scenes. He lent his songcraft to a diverse array of artists, and initiated a foray into the realm of bespoke musical compositions for television and commercials.

The astonishing journey of singer, songwriter, and producer Donny Dykowsky unfolds in a sequence of sonic metamorphoses. Having weathered the crucible of cancer, endured tumultuous relationships, and embraced the mantle of fatherhood, Donny emerges on the other side with a voice that is both vulnerable and brimming with vitality. His latest offering, the eponymous EP "Mirrors On The Moon," balances precariously on the precipice of psych-rock and harmonious American.

Donny joined Keith in Thunderlove Studio to have a chat.

This is their conversation.

We close our fourth season with an incredible interview with the remarkable Jeremy Chatelain.

Originally from Utah’s hardcore scene, fronting the band's Insight and Iceburn, he made his way to New York City and found himself fronting a “supergroup” that became Handsome.

Handsome, included ex-Helmet guitarist Peter Mengede and ex-Quicksand guitarist Tom Capone recorded a self-titled debut for Epic Records. The album is known for its aggressive music and incredible lyrics and continues influencing musicians.

Kerrang! listed Handsome as one of the "12 most underrated albums of the '90s," while Louder Sound included them on a list of the "top 50 cult metal bands".

After he left Handsome, Chatelain formed Jets to Brazil with singer Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbox. The band recorded three well-received albums from 1998 - 2002

In 2005 Jeremy joined the band Helmet to play bass, replacing Frank Bello on the Size Matters tour, but left in September 2006.

Since 2000 he has written and performed with his alt-country leaning band Cub Country.

Oh, he's also and entrepreuneur and children's book author. No, you read that correctly.

08 Feb 2023Episode 405 - Manda Rin of Bis01:06:29

Bis are a Scottish indie pop band composed of Steven Clark (Sci-Fi Steven), John Clark (John Disco), and Amanda MacKinnon (Manda Rin), formed in 1994. The band's name, rhymes with 'this.'

The name originates from the song "Black Iron Skyline" by The The.

The three musicians formed Bis in late 1994 while Rin and Disco were in secondary school,Woodfarm High School, and Steven, who had recently finished there. After releasing their first singles, Transmissions On The Teen-C Tip! and Disco Nation 45 the following year, they appeared on BBC Television's Top of the Pops in 1996, performing "Kandy Pop" from their The Secret Vampire Soundtrack EP - ahead of its release.

After releasing numerous cult EPs and three studio albums (1997's The New Transistor Heroes, 1999's Social Dancing, and 2001's Return To Centr,al) the band broke up in 203, but re-formed briefly in 2007 for a series of concerts. In 2009 thce again re-formed (adding a bass player and a drummer to the band lineup) and released the album data Panik etcetera in 2014.

The album Slight Disconnects was released in February 2,019 with the band lineup returning to the original core three-piece. An archival album, Music For Animations, consisting of music recorded in 2004 fthe or CBBC kids TV show BB3B, was released in 2020. 17 Oct 2024THROWBACK THURSDAY - Guitar Slingin' Troubadour ANDERS PARKER01:04:00

This week's throwback is a revisit to the singer/songwriter/guitar slinger with an almost insatiable intellectual and musical wanderlust - Anders Parker.

We closed out the fifth season of Abandoned Albums talking with the troubadour who entered the scene in the mid 90’s when a 4-track recording he made in his Portland, OR apartment, titled Man of Sin, got passed around. Anders then formed a band and began walking a trail that has defined his life, as you’ll hear.

As the leader/songwriter/guitarist/multi-instrumentalist of the band Varnaline, Parker toured and eventually released 5 albums under that name… and Anders entered the indie music lexicon.

As all things do, Varnaline ran its course, beginning phase two of Anders's artistry - a phase that has seen him exploring both his own solo work, collaborating with folks like Jay Farrar of Son Volt, and even adding music to some of the late Woody Guthrie’s songs. The resulting album New Multitudes found him collaborating with Jim James, Jay Farrar, and Will Johnson and remains a fan favorite.

The interview would’ve spanned two or three hours in order to cover everything Anders has accomplished in his career… and continues to accomplish.

Geoff and Keith spoke with Anders about a fair chunk of his career and about his new album, The Black Flight, which drops on Friday, August 11.

Pull up a chair, relax, and discover one helluva great artist - by every measure and definition of the word.

22 Feb 2023Episode 407 - Marko DeSantis & S.W. Lauden on Popsicko01:25:34

Santa Barbara Independent July 8, 2021 by S.W. Lauden

There’s a parallel universe in which this article is about Popsicko’s triumphant two-night stand at the Santa Barbara Bowl. A world where this high-energy alternative-rock band takes a triumphant victory lap in front of an adoring hometown crowd after nearly three decades at the top of the charts, countless world tours, and piles of platinum records.

Given the buzz around Popsicko in the early ’90s, the above scenario seemed entirely possible. “[Popsicko] plays songs stocked with simple chords and catchy refrains that you can shout along to, yet blissfully devoid of overproduction and triteness,” Danny Gellert wrote for a Santa Barbara Independent cover story in 1995. “This is rock and roll that’s informed of every pop music phase since the British Invasion, yet reinvents itself like none of it ever happened.”

But you’ve probably already guessed that’s not how this story ends.

So happy to welcome S.W. Lauden back to talk about this album.

Sit down, strap yourself in, there's some stuff here...

16 Dec 2022BONUS EPISODE -- Broken Homes Anniversary Redux - Producers Cut00:59:23

One year ago, I hit “Publish Now” on the first episode of Abandoned Albums.

I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately, I learned rather quickly, and over the past year, the show has evolved into what it is now a pretty damn good podcast.

Luckier still is that I didn’t do too much to this episode because it was still pretty damn good!

The origin of Abandoned Albums is found here on this inaugural episode’s album selection - the 1986 debut record by the LA-based band Broken Homes.

This self-titled debut captures Broken Homes at that perfect moment. A band with all the talent (as witnessed by what everyone did after the band's dissolution) and momentum going for them. Unfortunately, they didn’t have what was needed most, the support of a good rock and roll record label. If the band had been signed to Geffen Records instead of MCA Records, I am 1000% confident; I would not be writing this now.

[Listen to the Steve Isaacs episode to hear a funny acronym of what MCA stands for.]

When Broken Homes stepped into the studio with producer Jeff Eyrich, the band was undoubtedly firing on all cylinders. You’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out why one member didn’t make the grade for Eyrich despite this. The guy wasn’t fired; they just brought in a studio wizard to cover his part. Sorry, no spoilers… ya gotta listen.

The energy and excitement are palpable throughout the record, but if you need proof, listen to “It’s All Over Now” - arguably, one of the better album closers.

Broken Homes: An Album You Should Know

27 Jul 2023Episode 510 - Kate Griffin & Shawn Murphy of Above The Moon01:07:29

Being a musician in New Jersey has got to be a tough road. On one hand, you have one of the most revered artists in music history, and on the other hand, you have Jon Bon Jovi. Their combined album sales and streams are too many to count.

Eating, breathing, and gigging around those giants and hidden in the cracks and on the backroads are loads of artists who stand on their shoulders and in their shadows.

Above the Moon is one of those bands. They are Kate Griffin on guitar and vocals, Shawn Murphy on lead guitar, Kyle Griffin on bass, and John Gramuglia on drums.

Formed in 2016, they immediately began creating the music THEY wanted to hear. By incorporating influences like singer-songwriter fare to traditional rock, with some shoegaze and pop thrown in for good measure. Above the Moon has carved out a distinctive sound that is authentically them.

After a string of EPs, the band has released their first full-length album, Mine Again.

Kate and Shawn stopped by Thunderlove Studio to talk about the new album and a bunch of other stuff. Stories were told, and laughs were had.

Pull up a chair; here is their conversation with Keith and Geoff.

28 Sep 2023Episode 604 - Darren Jessee01:01:31

Darren Jessee is a gifted singer-songwriter and troubadour whose captivating melodies and poignant lyrics have earned him a dedicated following in the world of indie and folk music.

Darren's songwriting prowess was evident as the drummer for the critically acclaimed band Ben Folds Five. The band's fusion of alternative rock and piano-driven pop produced hits like "Brick" and "Song for the Dumped," and gained the band a loyal fan base.

After he departed from Ben Folds Five, he formed the band Hotel Lights. Formed in 2000, Hotel Lights released a series of albums that allowed Jessee to explore his songwriting in greater depth. Hotel Lights' music, often characterized by its contemplative themes and heartfelt narratives, has struck a chord with fans who appreciate Jessee's ability to craft songs that are both introspective and universally relatable.

His enduring commitment to his craft and his ability to create music that touches the soul and speaks to the heart make him a respected figure in the singer-songwriter genre.

Darren stopped by Thunderlove Studio to chat with Keith about Hotel Lights, his solo career, and the release of his new album, Central Bridge.

10 May 2023Episode 503 - Pete Argyropoulos & Kevin Haaland of Sons of Silver01:05:15

The energy from musicians in one room borders on magic. Whether or not they say a word, the riffs, the beats, and the rhythms carry their conversation around the room. Sons of Silver feed off this sort of face-to-face energy.

A tried-and-true rock n’ roll band, they plug in and unlock a flood of emotions energized by unbridled guitars, fluid percussion, and a distinct vocal howl. After amassing over 5 million YouTube views and receiving acclaim from Consequence of Sound, American Songwriter, Paste, Substream Magazine, and more, the quintet—Pete Argyropoulos [vocals, guitar], Brina Kabler [keys, vocals], Kevin Haaland [lead guitar] on Adam Kury [bass] conjure this magic on their independent 2022 EP, Ordinary Sex Appeal.

“Our vision is always to put five people in a space, trade ideas, and let the process be very human,” says Argyropoulos. “It’s not manufactured. It’s not autotuned. It’s not done from separate locations. We capture inspiration in the moment. It’s an old school way of doing things. Our goal was to turn that up on this new EP.”

Joining Keith & Geoff in Thunderlove Studio this week are Pete Argyropoulos and Kevin Haaland of the LA-based Sons of Silver.

Easily one of the best rock bands we've heard around the home office in... in a very long time.

Over the next three days, we'll release three separate interviews with the surviving members of the band Lone Justice: Marvin Etzioni, Ryan Hedgecock, and Maria McKee.

These interviews are being released in the order in which they were conducted.

The first is bass player and songwriter, Marvin Etzioni.

10 Aug 2022Episode 301, Part 1- Irwin Chusid00:47:59

Irwin Chusid is to outsider music as Irving Azoff was to Atlantic Records. This is to say that Chusid is the outsider music mogul. He's the guy behind the guy behind the artist… that you've probably never heard of.

However, you're familiar with Chusid and some of the artist's work he champions.

You may not know who Raymond Scott is, but if you're above a certain age, you may recall the animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show. Well, it's Chusid's dogged championing of Scott's music and push for its re-release that found its way into the earholes of The Ren & Stimpy Show Creator John Kricfalusi and Creative Director Bob Camp.

03 Apr 2024Episode 802 - Dive into the rebellious world of Bad Mary, from their punk snark to their unapologetic anthems, discover how Bad Mary embodies the spirit of rebellion.01:07:51

What do you get when you combine a married couple, a father as drummer and his daughter as lead singer, and a college professor?

You get Bad Mary.

There is unadulterated rock and roll… and then there’s Bad Mary. A band whose essence is raw and untamed, the bellows with punk snark and rebellion.

Bad Mary is:

  • Father Bill Mac (drummer) and his daughter Amanda Mac (lead vocals)

  • Amanda’s husband, Mike Staub (bass)

  • Mike and Amanda’s former Hofstra University Professor David Henderson (guitar)

Bad Mary embodies a spirit reminiscent of the old guard, The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, and Elvis Costello - yet with a modern edge.

In Bad Mary, you can hear the echoes of anarchy inherent in punk with a touch of that new-wave ironic detachment.

28 Sep 2022Episode 304 - Bill Goffrier of The Embarrassment00:50:37

Hailing from the great plains of Witchita, Kansas, The Embarrassment, like their contemporaries R.E.M., The Replacements, and Husker Du,  helped blaze the trail for what would become college or alternative rock in the early to mid 1980s. Affectionately known as The Embos, their smart, catchy, and quirky songs were a ballast to the moodier sounds of early R.E.M. and the more punkish sounds of the mats and Husker Du.

The band was guitarist Bill Goffrier, lead singer and organist John Nichols, bassist Ron Klaus and drummer Brent Giessmann.

Bill stops by Thunderlove Studio to talk about how the band went from a name like The Elastic Wasteband to The Embarrassment and how R.E.M. allegedly had them removed as an opening act - for fear they would outperform the headlining guys from Athens, Georgia.

Keith and Bill talk about the band, its place in history, and the upcoming documentary We Were Famous, You Don’t Remember.

24 Mar 2024Episode 611 - Ryan Allen01:00:33

Ryan Allen, a multi-faceted musician from Detroit, Michigan, has been an active and influential figure in the music scene since the early 1990s. Allen has been a part of too many groups to mention, but here is a sampling: Destroy This Place, Friendly Foes, Red Shirt Brigade, Ryan + Jono, and Thunderbirds Are Now! Far from an exhaustive list, each of these bands showcased different facets of Allen's musical prowess and interests, ranging from indie and punk to hardcore and alternative rock

In 2011, Allen launched "Ryan Allen & His Extra Arms." What began as a solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band, now simply known as Extra Arms. This project allowed Allen to explore a more personal and memoir-esque musical style, reminiscent of post-hardcore troubadours like Ted Leo, and Bob Mould

Allen's music often reflects his personal life and experience, featuring songs about his family, friends, and his journey through music over the years. Allen has also been involved in the band BIG LIFE, a group of seasoned local musicians creating Melodic Hardcore music inspired by Dischord Records' "Revolution Summer" era. BIG LIFE's sound draws influence from bands like Dag Nasty, and Fugazi.

Ryan Allen's career illustrates a dedication to evolving and experimenting within the realm of music, making him a distinctive and respected figure in Detroit's rich musical landscape.

Well, we can now add writer to the list of things Ryan Allen excels at. In the Fall/Winter Edition of Remember the Lightning: A Guitar Pop Journal, Volume 2, Allen penned the piece “The Ties That Bind Hardcore Punk & Power Pop.”

Ryan stopped by Thunderlove Studio recently to chat with Keith about the article and the whole of his music career.

24 Mar 2024Episode 701 - "Disturbingly Honest" Unsilenced Spirit: King Iso on Mental Health, Incarceration, and Self-Discovery01:04:58

King Iso's journey into the world of music started in the pews of his local church, a place where the early whispers of his talent began to echo off the walls. As a young boy drawn to the rhythmic dances of keys and organs, he found a mentor in the most unlikely of figures – a pastor who saw the spark within him and nurtured it by gifting him an organ from the church. This act of kindness set the boy on a path of self-discovery and self-education, as his fingers learned the language of music without formal training.

In time, King Iso's creative heart turned towards the art of words. Poetry was the gateway, a first step towards lyrical expression that laid the foundation for something more – something that beat not just in verses on a page but in the rhythm of songs. His older cousin, Mario, better known as Snake Lucci in the music circles, stepped in as both kin and guide, unveiling the secret world of bar structures and song composition.

As the curtain lifted and the studio lights came on, a pre-teen King Iso walked into a world that would come to define him. King Iso not only honed his craft but also found his voice – a voice that would go on to resonate with fans and fellow artists alike as he continues to carve out his kingdom in music.

04 Dec 2024DAYS BETWEEN STATIONS: Revitalizing Progressive Rock01:02:00

Days Between Stations, the Los Angeles-based progressive rock duo of Sepand Samzadeh and Oscar Fuentes, has consistently pushed the boundaries of art rock since their debut in 2007. Blending the genre’s classic roots with contemporary creativity, they have become a vital force in modern progressive rock. Drawing inspiration from seminal acts like Yes, Genesis, and Marillion, the duo bridges the grandeur of the past with the innovation of the present.

Their latest album, Perpetual Motion Machines, exemplifies this tradition, weaving complex compositions with thematic depth. Similar to Genesis during the Peter Gabriel era, their music is theatrical, creating vivid, often surreal soundscapes imbued with emotional intensity.

26 Feb 2025ROCKY O'REILLY of OPPENHEIMER01:18:33

Oppenheimer was an indie pop band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The band was made up of musicians Shaun Robinson and Rocky O'Reilly. Robinson and O'Reilly were previously members of the now disbanded Belfast group, Torgas Valley Reds. They met in 2003, in Belfast. O'Reilly had been mixing sound and recording Torgas Valley Reds, whom Robinson drummed for.

Inspired by their mutual love for Moog synthesizers, vocoders, and airhorns, O'Reilly and Robinson formed Oppenheimer in late 2004, using O'Reilly's spare room to record three songs, which they sent to their favourite labels.

And lucky for us, they found a home at Bar None Records.

Many thanks to Mark at Bar None Records for making this happen.

22 Jan 2025Author ROB JANICKE talks SLACKER 1991, Teen Spirit, Angst and the Generation It Created01:10:37

In what seems like a lifetime ago, I began the Abandoned Albums podcast with Rob Janicke, and we had a ton of fun doing it.

But then he went off to write his spectacular new book Slacker 1991, Teen Spirit, Angst and the Generation It Created.

Like Rob, I am of the generation he writes about and I found Slacker to be a great read. It's not only a great read about an era in American culture that has no shortage of interpretation, but the book also helped me understand the man I shared a mic with for about a year.

It’s Rob’s personal stories woven throughout the book that give Slacker a unique intimacy.

24 Mar 2024Episode 608 - Shawna Potter01:17:09

Shawna's not content with just rocking the boat; she's flipping it over. She penned the gospel of transformation, "Making Spaces Safer." It's a Bible for event organizers, venue owners, and anyone who dares to challenge the status quo. Shawna's not just asking for change; she's delivering it, in black and white, on every page. This isn't just a book; it's the blueprint for creating environments that are free from discrimination, harassment, and violence.

Shawna Potter, a whirlwind of music, activism, and defiance, challenging the norms and pushing the boundaries of punk rock and feminism. Her story isn't just about the fusion of music and activism; it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of passionate, dedicated individuals, unyielding in their pursuit of positive change. Shawna Potter, a punk rock prophet of progress, and a relentless force for a better world.

She stopped by Thunderlove Studios recently to chat with Geoff and Keith about all of that.

When they released their debut album Common Ground in 1988, it almost cost Keith his job as the assistant manager of Record World. Turns out his boss took issue with him playing the album 3 to 4 times a shift.

During our conversation, the guys explored the band's evolution, and the guys were candid and shared some great anecdotes about their inspirations, collaborations, and the challenges they faced in the rapidly changing industry of the 1980s.

The reason this album resonates so much with Keith (and now the rest of us around HQ) is that their dedication to crafting unique sounds and thought-provoking lyrics was, and remains, inspiring.

This album, and the band, are the reason we do Abandoned Albums. Rhythm Corps are the real deal.

This conversation with Rhythm Corps exemplified the power of music to spark important conversations and bring people together. All of us at Thunderlove HQ think that after you listen it's gonna leave you with a newfound appreciation for this remarkable band.

They cover a lot of ground and her stories help paint a more textured picture of Kim Fox as an artist.

AND, she's just wonderful to chat with...as you will hear.

18 Oct 2023Episode 607 - Dan Lord & Adam Guthrie of Pain and Salvo01:15:10

Pain was formed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1994 by friends Dan Lord, Mark "Pose" Milewicz, and Adam Guthrie. Guthrie was a guitarist-songwriter, Milewicz played bass guitar, and Lord became the band's songwriter and lead singer.

Pain played music variously described as pop punk, punk rock, and ska. However, in February 1997, lead singer Dan Lord took to the band's website to categorically deny that Pain was a ska band: "There are a lot of styles we emulate and ain't none of 'em from the island of Jamaica. So please, PLEASE, unless you're just havin' some fun with us, don't call us a ska band."

The band released four albums, toured the world, and produced original music for the mid-nineties reboot of the kids cartoon, Jabberjaw.

In 2000, while Pain was talking with interested record labels, Lord shut down Pain to pursue his religious calling. Lord received his Master of Theology from the University of Dallas, married, and became an author and father before reconnecting with Guthrie in 2018.

In the years leading up to 2018, Lord continued writing music and found that most of his new material was best suited as Pain songs. He and Guthrie agreed that these new tracks should be recorded and released. When Milewicz declined to return, Lord and Guthrie felt it was inappropriate to call the group Pain without one of its co-founders... and Salvo was born.

The new band released their first album, Off the Charts, in 2019. In August of 2022, Salvo released The Traveler.

Dan Lord and Adam Guthrie sat down with Geoff and Keith to talk about their career... and what's next for the band.

02 Nov 2022Episode 309 - Bill Hicks - In his own words (mostly).01:05:48

Bill HIcks was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician. His material—encompassing a wide range of social issues including religion, politics, and philosophy—was controversial and often steeped in dark comedy.

At the age of 16, while still in high school, Hicks began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas. During the 1980s, he toured the U.S. extensively and made a number of high-profile television appearances, but it was in the UK that he amassed a significant fan base, filling large venues during his 1991 tour. He also achieved some recognition as a guitarist and songwriter.

Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on February 26, 1994, at the age of 32. In subsequent years, his work gained significant acclaim in creative circles—particularly after a series of posthumous album releases—and he developed a substantial cult following.

In keeping with the way his career unfolded, in 2007, he was No. 6 on Channel 4's (UK)  list of the "100 Greatest Stand-Up Comics", and rose to No. 4 on the 2010 list.

Here in the US, in 2017, Rolling Stone magazine ranked him No. 13 on its list of the 50 best stand-up comics of all time.

31 Aug 2022Episode 303 - Dominique Durand & Andy Chase of Ivy00:52:49

As the principal songwriters and creative forces, Andy Chase and Adam Schlesinger brought a Lennon/McCartney aspect to their songwriting. This is to say that Andy’s view is a little left of center while Adam leans a little more commercial and when combined with Dominique Durand's voice, it’s astounding.

The music of Ivy is the convergence of three very distinct voices… and personalities, but with a shared vision. Whether you call it “shoegazing” or “indie pop” or “indie” or whatever, the band’s entire catalog is pure pop perfection.

Despite their lack of commercial success here in the United States, for over 15 years, Ivy was one of the most licensed bands in the business.

You may not know their name, but you definitely know their music.

10 Aug 2023Episode 512 - Singer/Songwriter Anders Parker01:04:04

We’re closing out the season with a big ‘un… per usual!

This week it’s the singer/songwriter/guitar slinger with an almost insatiable intellectual and musical wanderlust - Anders Parker.

He entered the scene in the mid 90’s when a 4-track recording he made in his Portland, OR apartment, titled Man of Sin, got passed around.

20 Jul 2023Episode 509 - Filmmaker Gorman Bechard01:10:31

If you’re above a certain age, you recall when the world of music reviewing existed beyond the print pantheon of Robert Christgau, David Fricke, and Greil Marcus.

In other words, reviewing music was an actual job, and almost every newspaper or magazine had someone who did that. Gorman’s gateway to music examination began as a music writer for his hometown rag, The Waterbury Republican, in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Very quickly, Bechard set about blazing the creative path that has led him from “The Brass City” of Waterbury to the flashy world of Hollywood, to editorial vices of the New York City Publishing world, and eventually to independent narrative and documentary filmmaking.

Gorman has made a name for himself in the world of documentaries with the blog Too Loud proclaiming:

“What makes Gorman Bechard's documentaries work is that he takes these high falutin film concepts and uses them for film documentaries. While Bechard is an obvious fan of his subject, he shows them as is, and doesn't try to show them glossed over or hyped up."

Gorman stopped by to chat with Keith about all his music documentaries.

05 Oct 2022Episode 305 - Chris Canterbury00:36:03

Keith manning the keyboard here - On this episode of Abandoned Albums I sat down with singer/songwriter Chris Canterbury stopped by to chat about Quaalude Lullabies. This album is the first album in a very long time that made me stop and listen to the lyrics. There was a time when that would’ve been standard practice listening to new music, but now? Well, you know…life.

Chris Canterbury is one of those rare singer/songwriters, his songs are straight-ahead and hit you where it matters most - the head and the heart. The nine songs on this new record are the type of songs that build careers and become legendary. If you're not identifying with one of the characters he’s singing about, then you know someone who will.

Given the title, Quaalude Lullabies, you go into it with an understanding that these songs will be a bit on the sad side. In more simple terms, as Chris points out, “the album is a collection of downers.” That said, these characters may be sad, and lonely, and they’re definitely damaged, but they’re not tragic.

Achieving that kind of symbiosis is no easy task, and on Quaalude Lullabies, Chris Canterbury does.

21 Dec 2022Episode 313 - Ronnie Barnett & Geoff Calhoun on Van Halen00:58:45

So, this is the last episode for our third season... and it's the final episode of 2022.

We could think of no better way to go out than having our old friend Ronnie Barnett stop by and Geoff Calhoun pop 'round to discuss one of our all-time favorite bands - the MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!

The question of what version of the band is better - the one with David Lee Roth or the one with Sammy Hagar - has been a topic of discussion for fans of the band for over 35 years now. Now, no disrespect intended, but the Gary Cherone version didn't make the cut.

Obviously, this topic is wildly subjective and wickedly charged depending on how many drinks you've had... and your audience.

The lads make no attempt to solve the question about which lead singer did it best, but they do take a look at one album from the Roth era, Women and Children First, and one from the Hagar era, 5150. Under the watchful eye of EP Rufus Thunderlove, they kept it both civil and fun.

Remember to have a few drinks this holiday season and spark this Van Halen conversation with your music friends. What could go wrong?

Abandoned Albums will return with a shiny new episode on January 11, 2023.

Thank you ALL for everything this year.

From Thunderlove Manor and Thunderlove Studios, we wish you all a very happy holiday season.

03 Aug 2023Episode 511 - Marcos Assis of Cool Sorcery00:59:09

It's a bit misleading to say Marcos Assis of Cool Sorcery because Marcos IS Cool Sorcery.

The Brazillian singer/songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist popped into Thunderlove Studio to talk with Geoff and Keith about the four, FOUR, releases he put out under the Cool Sorcery banner last year.

Marcos is a one-of-a-kind, and to call him a wunderkind wouldn't be too far of a stretch.

He's also the kind of artist you can expect to get when one is raised on a steady diet of Nirvana, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the Ronald McDonald Dance Album. Really.

For those keeping track at home, Marcos is an artist you are gonna wanna keep your eye on.

Check it out!
