The Wall Street Journal recently published a hit piece taking down GM CEO Mary Barra. Among other things the article discussed how Barra overinvested in battery electric vehicle (BEV) and self-driving tech, while underinvesting in proven hybrids and internal combustion vehicles. We say: GM's CEO should have hedged her BEV/self-driving bets rather than going, "all in".

Trauma surgeon Stephan's daughter Lauren spotted a 2016 Range Rover Evoque convertible. She and we hate it! WTF?

Dr Moran then puts on his trauma surgeon hat and discusses rear seat safety ratings, in this case those for mid-size luxury SUVs. He is gratified that the IHSS is now measuring the safety ratings for rear seat passengers but disappointed that so many "family haulers" have unsafe rear seats. You can't improve something unless you first measure it, so we hope rear seats become safer for kids soon.

The guys then get into their favorite childhood car toys. You-build-it plastic model cars are all of our faves, especially Tamiyas, but Hot Wheels and Corgis also earned our love.

Finally, all three of us select the $125,000 collector car that we would pick to put in our garages. Spoiler alert: they're all cool!

Ford’s Jim Farley is hedging his ICE bets, as the company recently split their ICE and EV businesses into separate divisions. It's not over by a long shot.

The Citroen 2CV looks like a snail on wheels but is slightly slower.

Some really ugly cars are still cool. Some really cool cars are actually surface renditions of some not-that-great cars. The guys choose cars that share platforms and thus DNA. We pick the winners, the losers, and those that make you beg for bad eyesight. Adams gets the instructions wrong, but still fulfills his word count. Do you agree with their choice? This is the first of three special episodes focusing on the legendary AC Shelby 427 Cobra. Stephan has owned a Unique Motocars 427 replica and is currently building an ERA Narrow Hip 427 Street. No one has ever tried to call a performance car practical: They're big, thirsty, lack luggage room and visibility, and are finicky and expensive to insure. Not so for hot hatches. The guys discuss the greatness of this automotive niche and list their faves.

1.    Renault Clio V6 2001-2005

Rear/mid engine crazy car. 1,309 built. 254 hp at 7200 rpm 3.0 V6

 

Originally created as a mad man project of a Renault engineer – Axel Breun - who wanted to put Renaults hot engine into a chassis meant for mid/rear engine. He found the Renault hatch, called the Twingo (which sounds like a packaged desert cake) and the Ferrari 308 had the identical wheelbase and was going to buy one of those for his test mule chassis.

2. Corrado VR6 – 1992 –1995. Low of $16k, high of $40k for a mint car, if you can find one. Narrow angle V6, great exhaust note, 190HP stuffed into a taught little nicely designed and serious looking car, the Corrado delivered. Super aero, obvs, with virtually no protrusion from the front whatsoever, this little chiseled brick was good for 0-60 of 6.4, top speed of 145, and STILL got 28.5mpg on the road.

 

3. Subaru Impreza WRX 2011-2014, 3rd Gen 2.5 liter flat 4 maybe the best WRX, 268 hp, 6 speed manual, great seats, great utility, seriously proven 4WD. OMG fun...

Stephan discusses a recent horrific crash in Nebraska that claimed the lives of six young people. 2docs talk about high BEV transaction prices and how they compare with luxury vehicle prices, and they wonder if Hurricane Ian will lead to flooded cars being sold to unsuspecting buyers elsewhere in the country. A 991.2 Porsche Turbo S cabriolet (!!!) crashed during a law enforcement-sanctioned Sun Valley Idaho high speed event. The driver and his passenger (!!!) crashed at approximately 205MPH, and miraculously lived (although they were both severely injured). Why a cabriolet and why with a passenger?!! Wtf?!! Our trauma surgeon Dr Stephan Moran weighs in with unique insights. Listeners/viewers, don't miss this discussion. Another vintage Mercedes 1955 race car is going up for auction soon and is expected to bring $70mil. Our collector car expert Adams weighs in. Steve-0 has had one-on-one experiences with outgoing Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda and his replacement Koji Sato, which the guys discuss. Then they talk about the increasing popularity of 7yr car loans (spoiler alert, they're a bad idea). CoC gets seat time in the BEV Porsche Taycan: it's a great car, but its weight is a concern, and the charging infrastructure is still a work in progress. Finally, we talk muscle cars and go through each of our "top five muscle cars of all time".

Did our conversation last week about being able to see Paint to Sample colors on the Porsche configurator make Porsche take that feature down? We say yes. Adams spotted a 1992 VW Corrado and the guys discuss. We also talk odometer fraud--more people are doing it, including high end collectors who should know better. Does the BMW i8 look like it's giving birth to a 911? We say yes. The guys have a lot to say about the upcoming BEV Ram Revolution pickup truck. We all hate the creepy shadow mode. Finally, trauma surgeon Stephan makes the case for maximizing rear seat safety and is grateful to the IIHS for starting to focus on this important area of safety.

Morgan is returning to the US with a $70K wood-framed sports car that looks a lot like a Morgan from 1955. But now it sports a modern 255HP BMW engine and transmission. The guys, ummm, like it.

Adams spots a 2019 Nissan GTR, and we agree that after 15 years it still doesn't make much sense. Note to Nissan: put the GTR drivetrain into the Z and an Infiniti sedan or SUV. People would *lap up* an Infiniti facsimile of the BMW M5 or X5M.

The guys then talk about their first-ever cars as well as their favorite rides.

Finally trauma surgeon Stephan goes into the parts or sections of various interiors that can cause injuries during a crash. Spoiler alert: electronic parking brakes are better than pedal operated ones.  

Hyundai announces that customers will be able to buy their vehicles on Amazon soon. Stephan says it's more "Teslafication", a term he coined about 2yrs ago. He's right!

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that went for $500,000 in 1985 sells for $52,000,000 at a recent auction. We talk about GTOs and focus on Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason's because we love that band and his cars.

Steve-0 isn't happy that Stellantis is laying off half (yes *half*) of its North American salaried workforce in a cost cutting move. If Chrysler had merged with GM rather than Fiat in 2009 most of those jobs would have been saved. Shame on Stellantis.

Our trauma surgeon Stephan Moran hates the "Carolina squat" that many dude bros are doing to their pickups. OMG guys, stop! You're endangering everyone around you, especially pedestrians!

The Porsche 911 turbo turns 50 this year. We say happy birthday! Adams talks about its history and evolution then lists the 5 most collectible models. And then the three of us pick our all-time favorite 911 turbo. A Porsche dealer in Charleston, SC is suing a former sales manager for taking bribes from customers who wanted in-demand cars (think GT3, GT3 RS, 911 S/T, and 911 Turbo S). CoC wonders if this practice isn't more widespread, and why dealerships don't have small committees make these important decisions rather than individual employees.

Finally, Steve-0 takes Mercedes to task for dumping too many EQS BEVs on their dealers (who don't want them), having to cut EQS prices by OMG $20,000, and for insisting on making their heretofore wonderful V8 C63 sedan a four-cylinder hybrid. We predict tepid sales.

2Docs bash GM on "optional" OnStar that is not optional.  Obviously the heat BMW got wasn't consider by the GM bean counters.  They discuss the new 2024 Ford Mustang.  More interview audio from Stephan's visit with Jack Roush. They talk Mustangs and drive the 2023 SEMA Roush Mustang P51B and 1969 Boss 429.  Jack talks about what aspect of performance is most important to him in setting up a vehicle.

The upcoming Cadillac BEV SUV rides on the Hummer platform and will cost around $120,000. We think it looks good but foresee problems with charging and range, especially with a full load of passengers/gear or while towing.
