15 Aug 2019Careers in Water Skiing00:39:08

I headed out to McClintock’s ski this summer, near Cambridge Ontario, to compete in the 2019 Ibuprofen Open. Me and 30 other skiers all aged 35 and up, competed for glory, and a chance to earn our Ibuprofen.

While there I brought my recorder and was once again your Career Buzz correspondent, interviewing the cast of characters I met.

Today, you’ll meet Teresa Wiwchar who just recently opened the Greater Niagara Ski Club, first of its kind in the Niagara region. Not only is she an amazing waterskier, and competed in the ibuprofen open, but she’s in the business. She bought a farmers field and dredged the small pond to create a long narrow ski lake on her 29 acres near Port Colborne Ontario. Stay tuned for Teresa’s interview.

Also, meet Steve Collins. 20 years ago when his son got involved in the sport, well, so did dad Steve. He’s been volunteering in the sport for decades, and now is a chair within the Water Ski Wakeboard Ontario.  Now retired, Steve dedicates time to the sport, and was our trusted scorekeeper at the Ibuprofen open.

But first, what’s it like to have an athletic gift, and to make a career out of that gift? Just ask Jason McClintock, at 32, his life’s work has been elite waterskiing and ski  competition. Jason is Canadian National Water Ski Team member, and the Ontario, Water Ski Team head coach. He holds the Canadian national record in slalom ski. Not just a competitor, Jason also runs the family business McClintocks Water Ski School which hosted the Ibuprofen Open. Now a husband and father of 2 young kids, Jason wears many hats in his career. Here’s my interview with world champion, Jason McClintock.

22 Jan 2025A career check-up can make your work and life better, sooner00:55:04

The “Sunday Scaries” (that anxiety feeling at the end of the weekend or holiday) should not be a thing.

So, if you’re feeling that way, could it mean you’re not in the right role? Or the role was right two years ago but now you’re feeling stuck? Or maybe your priorities have changed and you’re pondering what’s next in your life’s journey?

Book a check-up

One way to explore these feelings is to sign up for a career check-up. Career professionals use these single, focused consultations to help you assess the health of your career. Just as you would go to the doctor if your stomach was feeling persistently “off” or you would visit the physiotherapist for ongoing back pain, it makes sense to take action when you’re feeling that way about your career. Even when you’re feeling fine, doctors still recommend periodic check-ups—same idea.

How it works

Since career is a big topic, a check-up typically begins by identifying a particular issue you want to focus on, whether it’s starting a job search, finding a better role within your organization, deciding on which education and training options to help your career trajectory, or any other concern that’s been keeping you up at night. Career professionals will typically ask you to share reflections or any actions you’ve taken, so that by the time your check-up is scheduled, your counsellor can maximize your time together with targeted conversations. By the end of the call, you will have concrete suggestions about next steps, including a prescription that will help to improve your career wellness.

When you think about it, your career is not just a single job but a major part of your life, so don’t rest until it’s a “full expression of who you are,” which is part of a career definition.

Big benefits

Besides helping analyze a particular problem, career professionals also help you see the big picture, to reflect on how your career fits into your life and goals. Your past, your skills, your interests and your desire to do good in the world all have a big impact on creating a career that you will love. Career professionals are interested in knowing what unique mix of strengths and desires make you happy at work and in life. In other words? A holistic view.

Without career check-ups, people risk another year of unhappiness, in a job that doesn’t suit them. In 2024, Canadian HR Reporter magazine quoted a report by recruiter Hays Canada that noted 71 percent of workers wanted to leave their jobs in the next 12 months. The report noted that figure was up from 61 percent the previous year. How would you rate your job satisfaction, and importantly, how has it changed from a year ago? Wouldn’t it be sad if you waited yet another year before getting a check up? If your sense of fulfilment has gone down, or even stayed the same, commit to this being the year you take action.

When you enlist feedback from people whose entire job is focused on helping others with their careers, even starting the clarification will feel like progress as you finally begin to admit that you’re ready to see what’s possible.

Career professionals themselves thrive on witnessing clients move from unease to satisfaction in their work lives. When people find roles that are a better fit, their whole energy changes. Even a move from mild dissatisfaction to renewed enthusiasm within your own job can feel amazing. If there’s ever one last present to give yourself at the start of a new year, it’s the gift of certainty that you’re doing everything you can to make the most of your time and talents in the workplace, and in the world.

The CareerCycles Career Check-up includes a private and confidential 75-minute interactive virtual session using an evidence-based narrative approach, a pre-reflection to maximize check-up effectiveness, and a prescription for next steps that will help move you towards your goals. 01 Aug 2024You can’t be wealthy unless you know how to protect your wealth00:59:57

The steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, reputedly the world's richest man in the late 19th century, had some advice for anyone who wished to follow his example: “Put all your eggs in one basket,” he said, “and then watch that basket.”  Watching those eggs—aka asset protection—may no longer be that simple, if it ever was. But it's no less of a concern for anyone who has managed to amass some wealth. Making money is one thing; keeping it may require an entirely different set of strategies.  Our guest today believes “Money represents power and power represents freedom”. If you have some money, you have some of both. It’s better to hold on to it than give it to fast talking politicians or investment gurus. Your challenge is to save your money, avoid expropriation and taxes.

Today we hear from Alex Doulis noted expert and best-selling author on taxation, investing, banking and asset protection.  He has written six books providing guidance to Canadians to legally avoid paying tax and hold onto wealth. They are NOT get rich quick books.  His background is in finance having received his Chartered Financial Analyst in 1978. He worked in the investment industry in his later years and at aged 50, in 1990, having determined that more than 50 percent of his income was going to the tax men he devised the ultimate income tax avoidance scheme. He quit earning an income and went sailing for 15 years.  At that time, he wrote the book “take your money and run”. During those years of leisure in the Mediterranean, Alex had the opportunity to write about investing, the Canadian stock market and how it got to be what it is and why the Canadian market is a very dangerous place for you.

25 Dec 2024From Connectivity to Vulnerability: Navigating the Digital Transformation of Vehicles00:55:17

Hackers and other black-hat intruders are attempting to gain access to critical in-vehicle electronic units and data, potentially compromising critical safety functions and customer privacy. In this episode, Stephen Armstrong and AJ Khan, addresses this topic.
