Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he shares how to build the right leadership that addresses bias, discrimination, perfectionism, and an unfair focus on hierarchy. 03 Feb 2021 | 1: Kayra Martinez | The Power Of One: Supporting Refugees In Need With Art | 00:27:48
In this interview, we meet Kayra Martinez, the founder of Love Without Borders For Refugees In Need. You’ll hear how ONE woman harnessed her desire to help refugees in need to form a not-for-profit that has since helped thousands of refugees living in camps in Greece. Kayra learned by apparent accident when she supplied crayons and paper to kids living in the refugee camps. She discovered that kids who had stopped speaking were able to connect once again -- and that adults were able to move through some of their grief and start to heal. She formed this non-governmental, volunteer-based 501(c)(3) organization so she could fund their creations, support their livelihood, and help them get a fresh start. Each person she serves receives art supplies and training with artist-led workshops so they can learn to express themselves through art. You can browse her Etsy shop (link below) and choose a piece of their art for yourself or as a gift! 100% of the proceeds go back to the artist to help them get on their feet again. Thus far, her work has positively impacted thousands of displaced refugees. She has even begun to help find housing for them while fundraising to support their education so they can gain new skills and build a brighter future in a new land. Her organization has also launched a fundraiser via GoFundMe: The Wahid Wahid project, which provides long-term accommodations and retraining support to help refugees build a brighter future. About Kayra Martinez and Love Without Borders For Refugees In Need:Kayra Martinez is the founder of Love Without Borders for Refugees in Need. She began volunteering at a refugee camp in Greece alongside her day job as a flight attendant for United Airlines in 2015. While raising funds to help meet basic needs, Love Without Borders also provides refugees with art supplies. The resulting works are exhibited and sold, serving as a source of economic empowerment and offering an opportunity to show the challenges and tough conditions faced by refugees. website: http://lovewithoutborders4refugees.com etsy store: https://www.etsy.com/shop/LWBRefugeeArt?ref=search_shop_redirect instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lwb4refugees/ Show Notes: 0:00 – Introduction 1:47 – The start of a life-changing experience 2:39 – How the program started with a box of crayons and some paper 16:18 – Where the NGOs were failing 22:57 – How to measure success, especially when things are dire, and Kayra’s advice to people taking on similar projects JOIN OUR CIRCLE. At present, Marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols advocates for this very concept, spreading the positive impact of water on our lives. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, he talks about his book “Blue Mind” and how being in, on, or under water delivers profound transformation deep within yourself. He discusses how spending as little as 23 minutes around water – or just the feeling of it – could elevate your health and bring happiness to your state of mind. About Guest: Dr. Wallace J. Nichols (J) has been called a water warrior, one who commits to helping others access their “blue mind state.” His visionary ideas related to ocean and aquatic ecosystems, migratory species, marine protected areas, fisheries management and plastic pollution inspire others to find a deeper connection with nature and embrace inventive approaches to issues ranging from protection of ocean life to global water supply to the mental health benefits of a life spent on or near the water. Formerly a senior scientist at Ocean Conservancy, J holds a M.E.M. degree in Natural Resource Economics and Policy from Duke University and a Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona. He received a Bradley Fellowship to study the impacts of sea level rise at Duke University Marine Lab, a Marshall Fellowship to study at the University of Arizona, and a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico marine station in Mazatlán. In 2011 he was inducted as a Fellow National member of the Explorers Club. In 2014 he received the University of Arizona's Global Achievement Award. J has authored more than 200 publications, lectured in more than 30 countries and nearly all 50 states, and appeared in hundreds of media outlets including NPR, BBC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC, National Geographic, Animal Planet, Time, Newsweek, GQ, Outside Magazine, USA Today, Elle, Vogue, Fast Company, Surfer magazine, Scientific American, and New Scientist. His book Blue Mind, published in summer 2014 by Little, Brown & Company, quickly became a national bestseller. It has been translated into numerous languages, most recently Mandarin, and inspired a wave of media and practical application. 21 Jun 2022 | Nutrition Without Compromise: The Power Of Algae To Nourish Our Bodies And Regenerate Earth with Nobel laureate, Dr. William Moomaw | 00:45:29
Oceans are getting warmer and more acidic because of all the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This is happening because of deforestation or coal-burning, and it's not helping the ecosystem regenerate at all. This creates a chain reaction where the ocean eliminates algae and fish. The climate problem will never be solved if people keep abusing the natural world. Join Corinna Bellizzi and Dr. William Moomaw as they talk about the long-lasting effects of climate change. Dr. Moomaw is an Emeritus Professor of International Environmental Policy and the Founding Director of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. He is also the co-author of the Cut Out the Middle Fish paper, which talks about using algae as a protein source. Discover what proforestation means and why people need to build on existing forests. Listen in today to help stop climate change. About Our Guest, Dr. William Moomaw: Dr. William Moomaw is Emeritus Professor of international environmental policy and founding director of the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at The Fletcher School at Tufts University. An MIT schooled PhD in Physical chemistry, he has been instrumental in pushing for positive change through his work as a science fellow in the U.S. Senate, where he worked on legislation that successfully addressed ozone depletion. He began working on climate change in 1988 as the first director of the climate program at World Resources Institute in Washington. He has been the lead author of 5 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports. The IPCC shared the Nobel Peace Prize for its climate work in 2007. He is currently working on natural solutions to climate change with a focus on increasing carbon dioxide removal and sequestration by forests, wetlands and soils to compliment emission reductions from land use changes and replacing fossil fuels with zero carbon renewable energy. 16 Apr 2025 | Addressing The DEI Backlash With Natalie Norfus | 00:57:10
Today’s divisive society and political climate have been changing the concept of diversity, equity, and inclusion or DEI. Joining Corinna Bellizzi, she explains how DEI, despite not having a one-size-fits-all model, is crucial in dismantling the white supremacy culture. Natalie also discusses how the lack of a clear definition for DEI has led to its weaponization and how company leaders can commit to shutting down such advances.

26 May 2021 | 18: Sidney Collin | Defeating Symptoms of Parkinson's, One Step At A Time | 00:38:42
Parkinson's disease affects over one million people in the United States and ten million globally. Every year, 60 000 people are diagnosed for the first time. Parkinson's disease has a progressive nature, which means that it worsens over time. One of the most debilitating symptoms of Parkinson's disease is freezing gait. Freezing gait occurs when the brain stops sending the proper signals to the limbs, causing their gait to freeze. When this occurs, they frequently fall, resulting in trauma and injuries.
A radical treatment for freezing gait was born when a single person approached Cal Poly students and asked them to design a specific device. To tell this story, we’re joined by the company's founder, Sidney Collin of De Oro Devices, creators of NexStride.
The mission of De Oro Devices is to improve mobility, independence, and quality of life. NexStride is a small, portable device that uses research-backed visual and auditory cues to assist people with Parkinson's disease in overcoming freezing of gait.
About Guest: Sidney Collin has a background in computational neuroscience research, with a paper published in the Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology.
Sidney received the Cal Poly Outstanding Woman in Engineering Award, the Outstanding Student Award, and the Lisa Hufford Scholarship Award in 2019. She has also been named to the Wire's 30 under 30 list as one of the most influential women at Cal Poly, as well as the Pacific Coast Business Times' 40 under 40 list as a business leader.
Sidney graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering.

04 Sep 2024 | Combating Racism, Misogyny, and The Patriarchy | TikTok Creator - Karen @kclmft | 00:40:31
It is not easy to talk about racism, misogynism, and patriarchy these days, even though they severely mess up the present state of our society. Karen, who goes by @kclmft on TikTok, bravely discusses these topics on the internet, mainly to put down the horrible concept of Trumpism and Project 2025. She joins Corinna Bellizzi to share how she is being hunted by the former president’s MAGA crew as she uses her online platform to call out his racist and misogynistic behavior. They two also talk about the dangers of individualism, the importance of collective human action, and the right way to keep your own racism in check.
About Guest: Karen, whose handle on TikTok is @kclmft, is a women’s right activist who has a background as a licensed marriage and family therapist with over a decade of experience. She became involved in politics when Donald Trump came on the scene and she recognized his danger. Karen started making content online when she began receiving emails from his campaign, revealing the dog-whistles, the race-bating, and the all out calls to violence for all eyes to see. Because she’s been so critical of Trump, speaking out against his misogynistic behavior, his stoking of racism and division, and his connection to Project 2025, she’s under fire from Trump’s MAGA crew. For that reason, we won’t be revealing her full name, nor linking to her business on our podcast nor on our blog page. While she remains somewhat anonymous for the purposes of this interview, you are encouraged to find and follow her on TikTok @kclmft.

16 Jun 2021 | 21: Kelsey Rumburg | Trash to Treasure: Build a Business from Waste | 00:43:04
In just 30 years, the world's annual waste output will reach an estimated 3.4 billion tons. This worldwide garbage tsunami endangers our environment, economy, and even our relationships. To survive, we must not only contain it, but also use it.
When we realize that our waste has value, we can start to see how we might put it to greater use in our life. We can change our lives, as well as the businesses and communities around us, by adopting this approach. To reverse the trend, forward-thinking investors and inventors are constructing an economy that views trash as a valuable commodity and an ever-renewable resource. Kelsey’s book, Trash to Treasure: Exploring What It Takes to Build a Business from Waste explores the experiences of modern-day pioneers who are making waves—and money—by turning trash into treasure.
A few businesses you can explore to learn more about reducing waste in your life are Patagonia, Rust Belt Riders and Hungry Harvest. These businesses are as much climate and environmental activists as they are businesses and companies. They are all on a mission to make a sustainable impact, change the world and make it healthier.
About Our Guest, Kelsey Rumburg: Kelsey conceived a plan to leverage her passion for problem-solving to have a positive influence on the world around her from her family's Midwestern farm. It's the most wonderful time of the year to donate to charities, and if you do so early on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, your funds could be 100% matched by Meta (Facebook). Listen for details!
The charity we chose to focus on for our fundraising efforts: The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation.
Link to Fundraisers:
https://www.facebook.com/CornealDystrophy/fundraisers
When to Give:
8am Eastern, 5am Pacific on Tuesday 11/30/2021
Why? Because Facebook (Meta) is matching up to $8 million to charity fundraisers on their site on Giving Tuesday. The first $2 million donated 100%, and for the next $6 million raised -- the matching drops to 10%.
So donate early and $10 could = a $20 donation to your favorite charity. Donate a bit later, and that $10 becomes only $11. Wait to long, and it's just $10.
Remember, Facebook covers the 3% credit card fees too -- so 100% of your money goes to the charity, plus a big bump from Meta / Facebook!

20 Sep 2023 | Soil and Health Forum: Permaculture with Starhawk; The California Watershed with Brock Dolman | 00:55:45
Those of you who have been following our social media over the course of the last few weeks, or who subscribe to our newsletter have heard about the Soil & Health Forum hosted at Tara Firma Farms in Petaluma on September 16, 2023. It was an incredible gathering of like-minded individuals who are pushing for real change. Each person in attendance was and is dedicated to soil and to health. We felt the quiet prayers of Wendy Johnson who led the opening ceremonies, and even tasted the life-giving force of apples grown on the farm as the day began. Enjoy two sessions from the many offered that day, in this week's audio only presentation. You'll hear from Starhawk on Permaculture and from Brock Dolman on California Watershed issues and progress. For those that are interested in reviewing the complete video presentations from the day, please visit: https://soilandhealthforum.org. There you can review 2022 video presenations, and should soon be able to access the curriculum from this weekend's event, including the presentation that Corinna Bellizzi led with Beth Craig, former guest on Care More Be Better. Stay tuned in future weeks for additional content from the forum, and possibly interviews from the presenters, hopefully including Starhawk and Brock Dolman. Love the show? 10 Jul 2024 | Why Small-Scale Climate Solutions Won't Work | Dr. Robert Eberhart (Stanford PhD) | 00:55:24
Due to the sheer scale of the climate crisis, many efforts dedicated to environmental preservation seem all for naught. Small-scale climate solutions, even though established with good intentions, cannot simply catch up with today’s rapid ecological decline. Let us hear from Dr. Robert Eberhart, associate professor of management at the University of San Diego, on how to solve this alarming problem. He explains how to get rid of individualism and entrepreneurial ideology that prevent us from achieving collective impact. Dr. Eberhart also discusses how to rebalance our economy and build a better world by taking action against big banks, privatizations, political oppositions, and the destructive MAGA mindset. About Guest: Robert N. Eberhart is an Associate Professor of Management at the University of San Diego, where he studies how entrepreneurship shapes society. He earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His research spans topics such as how institutional change has complex effects on new firms and how an ideology of entrepreneurship affects society. He won awards from Responsible Research in Business and Management (2020), Organizations and Management Division Best Theory Paper (2017), Outstanding Scholar Award at SCU (2017), and Best Paper Award at the Western Academy of Management (2016). 27 Oct 2024 | Redefining Democracy: How Approval Voting Could Transform U.S. Politics | 00:39:40
In this interview episode (originally published in 2022), we explore how approval voting could change the political landscape in America with Aaron Hamlin, Executive Director of The Center for Election Science. Aaron shares his journey from political intrigue in grad school to advocating for a voting method that lets voters express a broader range of candidate preferences. Approval voting, a simple yet impactful system, allows people to vote for as many candidates as they approve of, with the candidate receiving the most votes winning. By tackling vote splitting and enabling voters to support multiple candidates, approval voting seeks to foster representation and discourage extremist candidates. Aaron offers insights into the success of approval voting in Fargo, St. Louis, and upcoming initiatives in Seattle, as well as the broader potential for state and even national adoption. We discuss how this system can reduce polarization, give voters more genuine choices, and improve political continuity by enabling policies that reflect broader support. Key Highlights:

01 Sep 2021 | 34: David Johnson, JSM | Climate Activism By Design | 00:51:59
In this interview, Corinna connects with David Johnson, a professor who teaches Design Thinking courses at Stanford University's D-School (Hasso Plattner Institute of Design) and Negotiation at Stanford School of Law. They discuss his journey from law to design thinking and climate activism.
As he says, we need a billion climate activists -- but we're not going to get them -- so he has crafted a solution to help create the change we need. David proposes a new system by which we can capitalize on the network effect and create a "greenprint" that will turn small groups of well intentioned activists around the world into a force of nature that can create real and lasting change -- with the goal of preserving and protecting our home planet.
About David Johnson:
David Johnson is a lawyer, writer and professor. He teaches Advanced Negotiation at Stanford Law School, and Design Thinking at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford. Across the last 20 years he has also practiced law in Silicon Valley, primarily as General Counsel for tech companies and, most recently, a non-profit foundation. His client list included some of the biggest names in science and technology: Apple, Caliper, Google, McKesson, Sankyo Pharma, and The Computer History Museum.
Last year, during sabbatical in Singapore, he wrote a keynote article for the Singapore Academy of Law, Design for Legal Systems. Now back at Stanford, David is working on a book applying design thinking to climate change activism, working title: Climate Activism by Design. In addition to writing and teaching, David is an avid skier and sailor, and a diligent but decidedly average tennis player.

14 Feb 2024 | Blue Mind: For The Love Of Water With Dr. Wallace J. Nichols | 00:56:35
The concept of Blue Mind has been around since the beginning of recorded human history. He also shares how he uses a small blue marble to spread awareness about his advocacy, educating everyone regarding their important role in saving our beloved water planet.
