Norwegian whalers have kill 580 whales in 2022. Iceland has killed 140 Fin Whales (Balaenoptera physalus) - an endangered species! In one instance a whale killed in Iceland came into the harbor with 4 grenade harpoons stuck in its body. These whales are dying a slow and painful death. Paul also mentioned a recent grind in the Faroe Islands where 260 whales were killed. Captain Watson tells us to avoid Faroese salmon in restaurants, as that is a way for us to put economic pressure on their country. If you plan on traveling to Iceland or know someone who is, please tell them to not eat whale meat while they are there. We need to put pressure on the Icelandic government to not renew their whale hunt quota for 2024. https://www.paulwatsonfoundation.org/

04 Dec 2023 | E25 - Ocean Killers Campaign - with Captain Watson and Lamya Essemlali | 00:24:09
In today's episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast we will be speaking with Captain Watson and Lamya Essemlali. Paul and Lamya will give us insight into Operation Ocean Killers, a joint campaign between the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Sea Shepherd France against the Super Trawlers that are wiping out large schools of fish. The Super Trawlers are enormous vessels that target Mackerel, Herring, and Blue Whiting. These fish are important food sources for larger marine creatures like dolphins. Because the Super Trawlers are so efficient at wiping out fish populations, dolphins have been forced to move closer to shore in search of food. In some instances, dolphins have washed up dead on shore due to starvation. The Super Trawlers also directly kill marine animals by trapping them in their huge nets. This "bycatch" is largely unmonitored allowing the Super Trawlers to do as they please out at sea. It is the goal of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation and Sea Shepherd France to bring attention to these Super Trawlers so that they can be stopped from causing further ecological damage to our planet. https://www.paulwatsonfoundation.org/

Fin whales are the second largest mammal on earth and are key contributors to our global ecosystems. We need to save every fin whale we can!
