12 Jan 2022 | Cultivating joy, happiness, + compassion. | 00:01:43
Hey Friend, How is it going this week? It would be odd not to mention the challenges we are facing in today’s world. At a time like this nurturing seeds of joy, kindness, and compassion are not a nice-to-have- they are a necessity. I know the feelings of overwhelm and stress and I just want to give you the chance to pause for a moment. Take a deep breath in. Pause. And a deep exhale. I am right here with you, wading through these waters. As the waves come crashing over our heads pushing us down, we swim to the surface; together. As the waves recede and we find ourselves buoyant again, we look up and breathe together. We can weather this. Even in the harshest climates seeds still grow. And that’s our task. Even in an often far too cruel world, we clear the grounds and grow what is divinely programmed. We tend to our joys. We grow wiser knowing our own personal happiness. We choose compassion. This is a necessity. As we learn to cultivate these seeds, may we be easy on ourselves. May we start now, with a powerful pause. Sending love-always, Lauren We take a powerful pause to begin to cultivate joy, happiness, and compassion towards ourselves. “Until we are able to love and take care of ourselves, we cannot be much help to others.”-Plum Village monk, Sister True Dedication. Please feel free to share this with friends or loved ones. Tag @”calmpoint_” “Metacognition is the awareness and understanding of one’s own thought process.” Metta (with two “T’s) in Pali means, loving-kindness. Here we’re practicing “metta-cognition”, or loving awareness and understanding of one’s own thought process. Here are “4 Soul Questions” from Deepak Chopra, as you take time for inward reflection. (Example answer below) Soul Questions: * Who am I? * What is my deepest desire? * What is my purpose? * What am I grateful for? As you ask yourself these questions, allow space for answers to arise with the curiosity of, “What wants to be revealed to me?”. Answers will step forward, there’s no need to force or over-analyze. Be soft, open, and inviting to what may arise from within. Of course you can always ask yourself these questions more than once and answers will change. (That’s ok.) Knowing the answers to these questions help us make fulfilling choices towards a deeper level of happiness, joy, and compassion in our lives. On a personal note, one of my deepest desire is to feel free. From loving awareness of my deepest desire, I’m able to make conscious choices that support this. Like I prioritize my meditation practice because it allows me to flex my freedom muscle. In my deepest desire to feel free, I carve out alone time that I so desperately need. Meeting my deepest desires fuels my happiness and joy. And knowing my own personal happiness and joys, ignites my ability to choose compassion. Now it’s your turn… Explore what comes up for you in reflection. Here if you need any support. Inspiration: I recently listened to a talk from a Buddhist monk on the Plum Village app, which is amazing, and was truly inspired by a particular step he mentioned in embracing challenging feelings. It was step 3, “offer yourself relief”. What a beautiful thing to be there for yourself and practice offering relief. Ahhh…right?! Insight: It feel very much like I’m in on the cusp of bursting changes (some I can not fully see/know) and I’m both excited and yet cautious. A few words that felt called to me this year were, “radical change”. As I’ve sat with it for a few weeks now, it feels like a shift towards leaving the “belly of the whale” (if you’re familiar with the hero/heroine’s journey) and crossing into a new threshold. Excited to share the journey with you here. Interest: I never thought I’d say this! Recently, there’s something about taking a baking or cooking class that sounds really interesting to me! It’s creative and mindful in a way I haven’t explored before. Send over any recommendations. <3 Connect on social @laurenlee.love and @calmpoint_ See you next week as we explore “reclaiming your wholeness”. You have so much more to be in life than broken… This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit calmpoint.substack.com

19 Jan 2022 | Remembering our wholeness | 00:03:33
Hello friends, You belong. Close your eyes for a moment, maybe place your hands over your heart, take a deep breath in and exhale. Pause for a moment. Listen with a deep quality. You dear friend, you belong. You are whole. When I think about wholeness and the return to it, I think about belonging. How deeply we struggle to feel like the world has a place for us. For distinct periods of my life I’ve felt like something was incomplete, something was missing. I often thought, if I just achieved more then maybe I’d fill the void. I’d feel complete. I remember during a meditation teacher training my teacher, Roger Gabriel, said, “You’re already whole. You’ve just forgotten.” That was the first time I’d ever considered the idea. Do you mean I’m not broken? My mistakes haven’t tainted me? I’ve simply just forgotten? He continued by saying, “We’re born with a deep sense of wholeness. Life has a way of chipping away from that knowledge.” Renewing our wholeness is remembering, not learning. What the great wisdom traditions remind us is that we are both an individual self and a Universal Self. “The Buddha taught that suffering arises out of feeling separate…Feeling separate is an existential trance in which we have forgotten the wholeness of our being.” - Tara Brach It seems the more we imprint our being into the individual self and further separate from our natural state of wholeness (Universal Self), the more we struggle. As I sit here and write this letter to you, I’m reminded of how easy it is to slip back into the belief that I’m incomplete. That I lack something. Today’s world feels relentless. I often wonder how to protect my daughter from seeing the weight of the world-worn on her mother. And then, I get still for a moment each day, and am reminded of my wholeness. I have to enter the awareness to return to it. Make the shift. It is always the sweetest return. Like coming home. A belonging. My late Grandmother used to always write and tell me every chance she could that, “God loves you.” (The tears are welling as I’m writing this.) In the last few weeks, after each meditation practice, this is what has come to mind. I didn’t realize until just now, that this was a divine renewal of my wholeness. It’s not something I attain, it’s been there all along. A message I so needed. I’m so deeply grateful to receive the whisper from my sweet Granny. May this week’s Calm Point give you the space and stillness to remember your wholeness. “To awaken from the feelings of separateness and find that we are in love with all of life.” -Tara Brach With love always, Take a powerful pause. Join a 5 minute guided meditation on remembering your wholeness. Meditation Tip: You can always begin again. If you fall out of your meditation practice or would like to start now, this is the perfect beginning. Take a moment to reflect on remembering your wholeness with a short story. “In Thailand where for years people worshipped what they thought was a clay statue of the Buddha. One day, by mere chance, one of the workers who was cleaning the statue discovered that beneath inches of tightly packed clay, the statue was actually solid gold. Centuries before, to protect it from looters and invaders, the Buddhists had covered the Golden Buddha with clay. None of those who knew its true form survived the invasion and onslaught. Hence, all worshippers thereafter assumed the image was one of clay, until the day, hundreds of years later, the pure gold core was discovered. Our spiritual journey is not about learning anything new. It’s just a matter of cleaning and polishing what’s already there—to rediscover our true essential nature without the distortion of the mind. We are gold, not clay.”- Chopra site (Full article) Each week we end by cultivating well-being with three points. This is a fun way of sharing bits and pieces of my life with you. I invite you to practice this too. Feel free to share your three points in the comments below or via DM. Inspiration: A little light-hearted inspiration that I received from a dear friend. 02 Feb 2022 | Living in the present | 00:03:46
Hello Friend, The only place you need to be is in the present. Sitting alone on our balcony before the sun rose in Hawaii. I leaned back in my chair and tucked my knees into my chest, wrapped my arms around them, and gazed up into the dark sky. The clouds passed and revealed the stars shinning. How ironic I thought. In the darkest hours, even with passing distractions, a star still shines. Each cloud rolled through unfazed, gentle, and smooth. The sky held space for the moments to pass. Everything was open and allowing the next moment to unfold. No forcing. No judgment. Just living. I lowered my head back down and noticed the time was 5:55 AM. A quiet morning of new beginnings. I could hear the rhythm of the ocean waves and the sway of the trees in the breeze syncing with my own breath. It felt like we were all breathing together. Off in the distance a bird called out something that felt so familiar. She too has something to say-- to be known. Silence gave her that space to fill. I didn’t yearn for anything. I didn’t need figure something out or rush to be somewhere else. I was content. Happy. Being. The sun starting to rise, while the moon was still shining, and accompanied by stars, “It’s all working together.”, I thought. “Everything has a purpose that’s neither greater or lesser than the other. It’s in harmony. This is what it means to live.” “When you live in the present moment, full of curiosity, appreciation, and love for what is, you are truly living your best life.” -Panache Desai For what it’s worth, the last few weeks have been personally hard. Overwhelmed with exhaustion from trying to keep everything afloat admits so many challenges . I had to stop and recall how much I (we) have been through and weathered in the last few years. To honor that. To grieve. To live in the present moment of my own challenges. Yes, it’s easy to be present in the pleasant things like the moon and stars but how easy it is to ignore the present moment when challenges arise. What healing it brings to live fully and presently, even when it’s hard. Easy does it and please ask for help. (I’m learning this too.) On that note, I wanted to send a little message that I needed to hear when days were particularly hard that may offer some relief. The clouds will pass, friend. Better days will come. This I’m sure of. This week we’ll explore inviting in the present moment and giving it all the appreciation and love it deserves. After-all, it’s all we truly have. With love always, Lauren Today’s powerful pause is a specific mindfulness of the body practice where we focus on sound. You can practice it here. It’s the practice of deep listening and embracing impermanence. The insights from this meditation practice will come. You get to just listen. Each week we end by cultivating well-being with three points. This is a fun way of sharing bits and pieces of my life with you. I invite you to practice this too. Feel free to share your three points in the comments. Inspiration: Are you into vision boards? I recently made a little one and loved this resource from Oprah. Insight: I love synchronistic moments. We swam with dolphins and I found myself moved to tears as he swam over to us and turned his head side to side to look into our eyes. The dolphin spirit animal meaning is of “breathing and being in the present moment, living life in total awareness.” I love this artist’s work with spirit animals. 09 Feb 2022 | Choose to be kind | 00:11:44
Hello Friend, Have you ever asked yourself what is the one message you would put onto a billboard? This is mine. Be kind to yourself. Love and affection towards yourself matters greatly. If there is one message you walk away with from Calm Point (and me), it’s to be loving towards yourself. “You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe deserve your love and affection.”-Buddha Period. If there were mic drops 2500 years ago, that’s what Buddha would have done after sharing this message. Self-compassion, being loving and kind towards yourself, is one of the greatest most important skills you may ever develop. We need it in order to live a fully expressed life. You are here to marvel in the experience of your own being and self-compassion is the lens. I invite you to take a breath, close your eyes for a moment if that feels good to you, and gently repeat a few times internally this phrase, “I deserve my love and affection towards myself.” You really do. The ability to treat yourself with kindness, understanding, tenderness, warmth, patience, empathy, acceptance, and non-judgment is a skill you are learning and developing. For many of us this may just the beginning of that journey. So be gentle with your heart because transforming it is a process. Today, I’m sharing with you my self-love meditation practice that over 22,000 people have listened to. May this powerful pause and inner reflections remind you that being kinder towards yourself is possible. My biggest dream for you is, even if you can’t be fully loving and kind towards yourself, may this day be kind to you. Today’s powerful pause is a self-love meditation practice. You are welcome to practice this meditation on Insight Timer app or on Calm Point.
Meditation Tip: Thoughts will arise in your meditation practice and that is okay. You can even welcome them. As the body begins to release stress, so will the mind in the form of thoughts. It makes perfect sense that when you’re still you will also have many thoughts that arise. That’s okay. You can simply observe the thought, give it wings, and let them fly away. Remember, if there is a charged thought you feel like you have to hold onto you can always remind yourself, “If it is important, I trust I will remember at the end of my practice.” Attach some beautiful wings to the thought and send them on their merry little way. :) We often talk about and focus on the areas of our lives we’re trying to improve. I want to celebrate you where you are! Below is a really fun way to notice the self-compassion strengths you already have. What were the first 3 words you saw? Each week we end by cultivating well-being with three points. This is a fun way of sharing bits and pieces of my life with you. I invite you to practice this too. Feel free to share your three points in the comments. Inspiration: “Time is a game beautifully played by children.”-Heraclitus. It’s our daughter’s birthday this week and she is by far my greatest teacher. Insight: “Faith without works is dead.”-James. A quote from the book of James in the Bible, jumped out from a podcast I was listening to. I looked it up, read stories, insights, and read the verse over and over again. Fell asleep thinking about it. It really had a profound impact on me. What’s the point of having faith or a spiritual practice without putting it into action? Interest: Learning more about Substack! 23 Feb 2022 | Your breath is everything. | 00:20:36
Before we begin, let’s take a moment to return to your breath. At this moment I invite you to take a deep breath in and a gentle exhale. On the inhale say, thank you. On the exhale say, thank you. Perhaps you can even bring a gentle smile to your face along with a pause of gratitude for your breath. After a few breaths, you may feel a little lighter—what a gift. This week’s meditation practice focus is mindfulness of breath. You can practice here. And as far as the story about a life-changing dharma talk, let’s begin. Warmly, Lauren For breath is life. Each week our sangha meets and a fellow member will give a dharma talk (teacher lead talk on Buddha’s teachings). I’m blown away, often moved to tears, and epiphanies are plentiful. I smile from ear to ear at just the sound of a member’s voice. They are family to me. This week’s talk was led by an incredible spiritual teacher, Augustine Boateng. The title of his dharma talk was, “Take me (breath) not for granted.” He spoke intuitively, poetic, and deliberately. He mentioned that “The breath is a marvelous expression of God. It’s a life force.” As he continue to give his talk it was as if a thousand lights went off around me. I really got the power of the awareness of breath. Like, REALLY got it. I was flooded with a deep overwhelming appreciation for my breath. I had previously noticed, studied, sat with, watched, connected to, searched for in difficulties, and lead others to connect to, and yet never developed this kind of reverence for. Inspired by his talk I wrote the following that night… Meeting the Breath. When we first brought our daughter home from the hospital we put a bassinet in our room where she would sleep. We placed it on my side of the bed so that it would be easier to breastfeed through the night. It was our first night home, she had fallen asleep while I was nursing her, and I placed her back into the bassinet. I lay down in our bed and thought if I can just hear the sound of her breath, then everything will be okay. As an anxious and inexperienced new mother, I stayed up for as long as I could listening to the sweet sweet sound of the rise and fall of each breath she took. As I’d drift off to sleep, I’d spring up again in search of the sound, peek into her bassinet, and place my hand on her chest. There it would be. Her breath. The sound of the abundant exchange between her and God.
I’d lay back down, reassured. It’s still there. Everything is okay. I’d look and watch her sleep. I longed for nothing else than that sound. I realized then that there is nothing more important than our breath. Nothing. True Happiness We are all in search of happiness and yet it’s right there under our noses. Happiness is right where you are, right now. Whatever you’re holding out for to finally be happy, the new job, the relationship, the house, the money, you no longer have to tether your happiness to that. You don’t have to wait to be happy. I know what you’re thinking. “Lauren, it sounds good that happiness is right where I am but I don’t feel it.” And I get you. It’s a pretty big shift to make. To go from believing that you attain happiness through achievements and things to happiness is within. That you already have everything you need to be happy. But it’s not only possible to make this shift. It’s a transformation. I want to stop you for a moment and ask you, what is more, important than your breath? It may feel like a less than stimulating experience to focus on your breath in comparison to our fast-paced lifestyle but the subtlety of your breath is its strength. It’s the one constant that asks nothing of you but provides everything. Of course, you can still aspire to have the things you’re interested in creating and receiving but your happiness is not tied to it. The source of your happiness can rest in the awareness and deep reverence for your life. For the present. 5 ways to deepen your appreciation for your breath. * Morning Gratitude: When you wake up each morning take a moment to say, thank you. This practice is simple, and easy, and grounds your gratitude before your feet hit the floor. * Daily Meditation: Practicing meditation that focuses on the breath is a beautiful and enlightening practice. Begin here for a gentle breathing meditation practice. * Focused Breathing: Use this easy and simple breathing technique throughout the day as needed. Perhaps you practice this before you have a big meeting or before going out to a party. It will help to sync the body and mind. In addition to supporting your mental, physical, and emotional health. * Breathing technique: Inhale and count…1, 2, 3, 4, Exhale and count…1, 2, 3, 4 (Repeat 3 times) * Positive Affirmation: When you feel yourself being pulled into a negative thought pattern repeat the following phrase, “I am complete. I have all that I need to be happy. I have my breath.” Gently release and begin again. * 1-day Abundance Challenge: Pick a day and try the abundance challenge. No matter what you experience that day can you have the response, I have my breath. Step into the abundance mentality for one day. See what unfolds for you. 03 Mar 2022 | Hope. | 00:10:47
Dear Friend, Tell me it's going to be okay. In meditation this past week after learning the devastating news about Ukraine and found myself asking, how do I continue in times of such immeasurable suffering? Is meditation and practicing mindfulness doing anything? Is it worth it? I heard this little voice within during my meditation sit that said, "I need to feel safe.” I felt her. I held her. I told her, “It’s going to be alright.” My daughter loves music. As the world would orchestrate itself around me that day, as it does for us all, she fell in love with a new song called “Cover me in Sunshine”. The song goes… Just imagine people laughing I know someday we will And even if it's far away Get me through another day Cover me in sunshine Shower me with good times Tell me that the worlds been spinning since the beginning And everything will be alright Driving through the city, my daughter sang to the trees as if she was on stage lifting people to their feet. Tears are running down my cheeks. I was thinking about all of us who will be smiling again. Even if it's far away, we will get through another day. There it was... Hope. The answer to my questions like, is this practice purposeful? Is it worth it to continue to teach and practice? Yes. Peace is real. Compassion exists. Kindness and love are here. We must keep hope alive. Our hope for peace, love, and kindness is not an illusion. We hold both realities, hope, and fear in our hearts, with the potential to awaken. With a courageous heart and at times a faltering mind, this week let’s look to hope as our guiding light. Keep going, friend. Don’t lose yourself in war and injustices. “If you lose your peace you lose yourself. If you lose yourself you lose hope. We’re counting on you.” -Thich Nhat Hanh May we lift one another up. Keep hope alive. Love you, Lauren Right now one of the most impactful things we can do (if possible) is pause, reflect, and connect with our values. Here is a 10-minute guided meditation to help regain your connection to a calm and peaceful mind. Easy does it. Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, shared a powerful analogy when asked, “With all the madness and violence going on in the world nowadays, how do you keep yourself from losing faith in humanity and giving up altogether?” Listen to his answer here. |4-minutes| Inspiration: Hope, in all its forms. Hello friend, I hope today you can take a meaningful deep breath to recenter. There are many ways we get swept away from taking the effort to care for and love ourselves as we are. Maybe today, now, in this very moment you can recognize something pretty amazing. You are loving yourself the best way you know how to. And even better, every moment is an opening to meet yourself where you are with a little more compassion than before. “A meditator is both an artist and a warrior.”, said Thich Nhat Hanh. Nothing seems more true these days. As you put out the welcome mat to how you are feeling and what you're experiencing right now in your life, I invite you to embrace the idea of meeting yourself with compassion. This is the artist in you. To meet your difficulties and the way you offer yourself love and kindness is unique to you. Only you know of the perfect gentle phrase to whisper to yourself when you’re feeling anxious. There’s a lovely memory only you can recall when faced with difficulties. How to water the seeds of joy, happiness, and gratitude within are only known by you. It’s an art to meet yourself where you are, “to make use of the mud of our suffering to grow lotuses of love and understanding.” When you open your arms to yourself, I think of the bravery and courage it takes to face what keeps you from being happy and free. That’s no small task. You are a warrior. If you ever wanted to help the world rest assured you are doing it every time you find peace in your pain. This week I wanted to share an inward reflection and meditation practice to help you meet yourself where you are; to live open. Love you dearly, Lauren Lee Meditation Practice: Join a 10-minute meditation practice. This practice introduces a technique called “noting”. I’ll gently guide you through this with both an explanation and space to practice. The insights to this practice are to help you gently name thoughts and/or feelings as they arise and pass. This is to help you meet yourself where you are, untangle, and offer moments of freedom. Meditation Tip: When using the noting meditation technique, try to not get overly attached or rigid to the practice. When you are able to sit in moments between thoughts simply allow yourself to be fully there. If another thought arises, name it, gently release it, return to your breath, and reside in the present moment. Repeat as needed. An example is, you begin to focus on your breath, a thought about your schedule arises into your awareness, you notice it, and name it “planning”, and gently release the thought to rest again on the awareness of your breath. Remember to be kind to your mind. Try this practice with me here- I’ve got you. Deepen your artistic and warrior spirit with the following exercise. * Happiness List: On a piece of paper or journal list all the conditions of happiness you have. (i.e. Sunshine, dog cuddles, my breath, the warmth of a cup of tea, a fabulous book, a dear friend, a kind remark, and so on…) Feel free to invoke your artist within and decorate it, use beautiful colors, cut-out magazine words, frame it, or follow any inspiration that comes from the process. Happy creating! * Letting Go List: On a piece of paper or journal list, everything that you need to let go of. Anything that stands in the way of your happiness and freedom. Just naming it will help you to untangle from it, just like naming our thoughts in the meditation practice helps you to release them. Easy does it. Invoke your warrior-like spirit, enlist a close friend, or supportive partner to walk with through challenging moments of letting go. Inspiration: The human spirit. In a gentle way, you can shake the world. This prayer helps guide me. Insight: A dear friend shared a quote by Mary Oliver about joy and I wanted to share it with you too. Listen to the quote here. Bonus: You’ll also learn how to cut a mango like a little hedgehog. ;) Interest: Offering myself relief when I’m overwhelmed. Check out my practice here. 25 Mar 2022 | Finding New Perspective. | 00:13:15
Hello friend, How are you feeling these days? Wherever you may find yourself today, let this be an invitation to take a soothing exhale. May this be an intentional moment to nurture yourself because whether you are aware or not, you are in bloom. The first week of spring is a beautiful time to share this week’s topic of hidden potential. We just have to look outside our window to get a sense of it. Spring reminds us that renewal, growth, and change are our very nature. The same graciousness of a flower opening right on time is available for us too. If only we could trust our opening as they do. On my desk, I have this quote by Deepak Chopra. “Base your daily existence on the generosity of spirit.” This is how I look at hidden potential. When we are met with challenge or uncertainty may we look for the openings rather at a dead-end. With the passing of an opportunity, the potential of rebirth takes its place. Although silent the generosity of spirit is there. We just need to open up to it (like a spring flower). :) Rest assured this is a practice. One you can begin anytime. This week’s mediation practice and inward reflection provide space to explore this. I’m hopeful this serves you in a meaningful way today. You deserve peace. You deserve love. You deserve to rest. Love always, Meditation practice: This week’s meditation practice carves out an opportunity to ask yourself contemplative questions in a quiet space with a calm body, open mind, and soft heart. Questions such as, “Can I see a hidden potential in a current challenge I’m faced with?” Meditation tip: If you don’t have time to practice today, find a moment to take 3 deep breaths and ask yourself this question. Open up to what is revealed to you. Morning Meditation with Marianne Williamson Dear God, May I remember to go deep in each moment, to truly see and hear and reflect On what is happening all around. May the depth of my vision and clarity of perceptions deliver me To a peaceful place. Amen. In the midst of chaos, I cleave to inner peace. Inspiration: Deep conversation is food for the soul. Here are 99 mindful conversation topics from The Good Trade (one of my favorite daily newsletters). Insight: I was joined in conversation with fellow Chopra teachers on Chopra Club (clubhouse) and what struck me was this statement. “Suffering is optional.” Join us for another conversation in April here. Interest: Reading in the sun. 13 Apr 2022 | Learning to Soften. | 00:10:22
Hi Friend, Here’s a little note to remind you that a softening can begin on your next exhale. Even in the grit of life an exhale can offer a moment of relief. The next time you find yourself aware of your breath repeat, I’m not going to give up on you. Sometimes we’re so pressed up against our thoughts, schedules, and uncertainties we can’t see beyond them. One way to create space between our thoughts and step into the present moment is by being kind to ourselves. I know you’ve heard this before but how quickly we overlook the remedies of love and kindness. If you’re feeling like you need a little extra softening today take your hand to your heart and make a connection to your body. Another simple way to soften into the present moment is to bring a gentle smile to your face. If the hardening of our self-doubt and criticisms seeps in, may we be reminded how easy it is to offer ourselves relief with these three gentle tips. * Softening can occur on your next exhale. Bring your awareness to your breath and be fully present for the exhale. * Offer yourself a gentle phrase like, “I’m not going to give up on you.” * Bring your awareness to a gentle smile (or half-smile) and breathe. This week’s meditation practice is the mindfulness practice of a smile. I hope it offers a chance to lighten, soften, and cultivates compassion within. Hugs, Lauren

Here are 4 keys to waking up from Pema Chodron. Thank you for being here and taking time out of your day to find your center. 15 Apr 2022 | New! Inward Reflections: Soften | 00:05:27
There’s a story in the Buddhist tradition that goes like this… A western monk at a Buddhist Monastery became frustrated by the difficulties of practice and the detailed and seemingly arbitrary rules of conduct that the monk had to follow. He began to criticize other monks for sloppy practice and to doubt the wisdom on the teaching. At one point, he went to Achaan Chah the master and complained, noting that even Achaan Chah himself was inconsistent and seemed often to contradict himself in an unenlightened way. Achaan Chah just laughed and pointed out how much the monk was suffering by trying to judge the others around him. Then he explained that his way of teaching is very simple: “It is as though I see people walking down a road I know well. To them the way may unclear. I look up and see someone about to fall into a ditch on the right-hand side of the road, so I call out to him, “Go left, go left!” Similarly, if I see another person about to fall into a ditch on the left, I call out, “Go right, go right!” That is the extent of my teaching. Whatever extreme you get caught in, whatever you get attached to, I say, “Let go of that too.” Let go on the left, let go on the right. Come back to the center, and you will arrive at the true Way. (Excerpt from Soul Food, Jack Kornfield & Christina Feldman) I love that stories have a way of conveying important messages without pressure. You get to simply listen and be open. Through that opening, it seems that wisdom is absorbed rather than studied. And with that wisdom comes balance. Softening is so much the practice (and art) of letting go. You can see how the teacher is guiding the monk to know his own suffering and to let it be. (Not an easy task.) To quote Buddha, “The sky has no east or west, nor does not make any distinctions between this and that. Distinctions arise from the human mind alone.” The teacher also shares that whatever you get caught up in is your responsibility but on this path, you will be asked to let go of it. He also offers a reminder that whatever your extremes are or attachment to your perceptions, there is an opportunity to master yourself before critiquing others. Here are 5 questions to ask to help go deeper into the topic of learning to soften. Easy does it and remember to be kind to yourself. Offer yourself time to reflect through writing, movement, contemplation, or talking to a trusted friend. * What division exists in your life that could be reconciled with honest communication? * What extreme (“this or that”) thinking could you loosen your attachment to through deep understanding? * What in your life right now is needing the response of love and acceptance? * What is a negative belief you hold about yourself that you’d be willing to reconsider? * What opportunities do you have to truly make a difference and show others the way? This week’s meditation practice is available here. Love to hear from you. Please share your thoughts on Inward Reflections by Calm Point. Connect with me at @laurenlee.love and @calmpoint_. 22 Apr 2022 | Held by Mother Earth: Stop, rest, and heal. | 00:14:16
Hello dear friend, Happy Earth Day! Some weeks require more stopping, calming, resting, and healing than others. Let’s face it some years require more of this pace of life. As your get settled here take a deep breath in and a conscious exhale. You’re here and I invite you to remain open as you read along. This week in conversation I heard, “One conscious breath can change everything.” I really felt that and hope you can too. An aspect of meditation that is often overlooked is stopping (shamtha). Stopping what we’re doing, stopping habitual patterns, stopping the take-down of our strong emotions, etc. This requires a level of awareness and attention. (AKA mindfulness) Stopping allows us to recognize where we are right now. I’ve learned over and over again the more I’m willing to recognize how I feel right in the present moment is my gateway to more peace and freedom in life. For example, if you find yourself irritated you stop and recognize the irritation within you (not always an easy task). According to Buddha’s guidance, if we’re able to stop and recognize where we are in the present moment we can move into acceptance of it. We accept that at this moment we’re irritated. That acceptance leads us to embrace ourselves where we are. This embrace of our irritation is often the beginning of relief and a calming. When we’re calm enough we can look into what is causing our irritation. This leads us to understand, have compassion, and ultimately to rest. We can place our worries down for a moment and feel relief. When we rest we heal. What I walked you through above are the 5 steps from Buddha to help calm the mind and body are, “Recognition, Acceptance, Embracing, Looking Deeply, and Insight”. As one of the great Zen masters says, “If we cannot stop, the course of our destruction will just continue. The world needs healing. Individuals, communities, and nations need healing.”- Thich Nhat Hanh Such wise words. May this weekend is restful for you and may healing begin on what weighs on your heart and mind. Lots of love, Lauren Join a 15- minute guided meditation on body relaxation. Begin your practice here. (This link includes meditation with music. 27 Apr 2022 | Give Back to Yourself. | 00:15:24
Hello friend, May you unapologetically nurture yourself. Full stop. Read that again. Take the time, take the space, and set boundaries for whatever you need in order to give back to yourself. A good time to start? Here. :) With a soothing inhale and exhale offer yourself a little pause between thoughts. Let each exhale be a “gap” to do to nothing. To be. To rest. Even just for a few seconds. “Life is the flower of which love is the honey”- Victor Hugo Sometimes nurturing ourselves can be found in the simplest things. It had been a few cloudy gray days here but the sun had finally broken through the clouds. I found a few minutes between meetings to lay down on the grass. Blue sky, sun on my skin, my dog snuggled up beside me, the sound of happy birdies… A little bee flew down right beside me. I moved her from the grass onto our cement patio beside me and she stopped to rest for a moment. She turned her head to each side deeming the space safe enough to be. The wind blew strong enough to push her back a bit but she rooted her feet into the cement and waited for the wind to let up. And then she began. Bowing her head down and rubbing her front legs through each antenna. Over and over she’d dip her head down brush her leg over her antenna until she decided it was time to move to another area of her body. Then tending to her back legs. Rubbing them together and brushing them up against her front legs. Over and over again. The fuzzy hair on her body started to fluff out and the tiny hair on her legs was standing up now. Her wings were shining in the sun as she’d dance around nurturing and caring for her body. This vessel that would carry her from flower to hive. To me, it seemed like there was not a care in the world for this bee. No judgment if she was worthy of taking care of herself before flight or questioning if it was a waste of time. It was necessary. I watched her and what I kept thinking was, why don’t we tend to ourselves this way? Unapologetically. May you find a moment of pure guilt-free nurturing. You deserve to rest. As mentioned last week, rest leads to healing. Love always, Lauren Meditation practice is available by playing this episode. 06 May 2022 | You Can Rest Here <3 | 00:13:21
Hey Friend, Your attention is likely being called in many directions. (Mine too.) The pressure of the world, to be of service, to be a care-taker, to work, to care for yourself, to bear uncertainty, to be there in times of need for others, to take in the wonders and joys of life, to dream…this is the nature of our world. May this be your soft landing. A chance to gently move your focus to your breath for one inhale and one exhale. That’s it. Just one… Sometimes a simple shift of attention (awareness) can help us through our more challenging and stressful moments. When I’m overwhelmed I carve out space for silence to feel my ribs expand like wings and watch air move through me. It’s my way of placing the world with all of its noise “over there” for a moment and connecting to my calm center. To regain peace (even if it’s momentarily) is available with awareness. This week’s meditation practice is called “Regaining Peace”. Listen here. May we remind ourselves that the world will always hold contrasts. That in fact, we hold the same contrasts within ourselves. Love and hate, admiration and jealousy, worry and hope, upset and happiness, etc. When we lose our way may we remember a shift in perspective is never too far—it’s just one breath away. Helpful Tip: For a quick and simple practice to become centered bring your awareness to your heart and chest. Breathe in deeply and feel the belly expand. Slowly exhale and pause at the end of the exhale and count 1, 2, 3, and repeat. This is vagal breathing and one of the most useful and quick ways to find your calm point. Thinking of you all. Don’t forget the power of one person (like you) to remain calm. Not complacent or passive but effectively centered. Love always, Lauren P.S. In some cases, things are flat-out hurtful. You don’t have to wonder why with all your practices, training, and dedication to living a life of ease and joy you still find yourself unhinged by certain things. Some things just hurt. There may be a lot of people around you or it’s yourself that are feeling hurt right now (war, injustice, poverty, sickness, harm, etc.) and it’s okay to respect your feelings as they are— even thank them. You can offer yourself simple yet meaningful phrases like, “ I matter. I’m a good person. I’m good at what I do. I am lovable. I really belong.” and remember to reach out for help when you need it. Join this week’s meditation practice here. 10-minute guided meditation practice to carve out space to regain your peace of mind. Sometimes just one conscious breath is enough to bring you back to your center. “In, out Deep, slow Calm, ease Smile, release Present moment, wonderful moment” -Thich Nhat Hanh Inspiration: You. Every one of you. You inspire me to continue. Insight: Gratitude. I see the seeds of gratitude take root in our daughter through a new nightly ritual to write about 3 people she’s grateful for and one person that brought her joy in her day. It shifts the entire energy of the evening. Pretty cool to watch those seeds grow in her (and us). Interest: Rest. I’m dreaming of quiet sun-kissed summer nights. Six years ago, I called my boyfriend (now husband) and said, we're pregnant. Like a car screeching to a halt, the image of my life changed; forever. I was no longer living for myself. I was living for us. I had solo-traveled, hobbed-knobbed with the who's who, risen the ranks of the corporate ladder, dabbled in drugs, sweated and meditated for spiritual journies, and yet, I never was awakened like I was when I met my daughter. It was the call. In Buddhist traditions, there are seven components of awakening...continue reading below under the section, “Bonus: Inward Reflections”. 13-minute meditation.
